It’s not all running… as well as running, training and racing lots of club members get involved in all sorts of other sports.

One fool recently thought it would be an idea to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks. On a bike.

After the trials and tribulations of doing an Ironman back in August I thought it time I did some cyclo cross racing. For those not in the know, cross racing is basically old school off road bike racing, no fancy suspension, just one hour of full on racing on the grass and in the woods.

As for the last few years, fine weather prevailed for the annual Swindon cross with 100+ riders all eager to test out the new course. I’d arrived early to help Andy the organiser put it together, so was hopeful my local knowledge would serve well when the racing began. Of course like all the best laid plans, it wasn’t until about 15 minutes before the start whistle, that I was able to get on my bike and have a ride around. It was certainly an eventful lap, once I was travelling in the right direction, much to mirth of my club mates. Firstly, I took the wrong route along a bit I’d actually set, and then managed to crash, whilst negotiating one of Andy’s new hazards in the woods. To rub salt in my wounds, the whistle then goes to get to the start line, whereas I’m at the furthest point of the lap and end up starting at the back.

Now the start is key in a cross race, which is essentially the reverse of a normal bike race with a flat out sprint at the start to get the best position and then 55 minutes of purgatory before the bell goes for the last lap. Despite my poor placing I managed to spend most of that hour overtaking people and not experience any more crashes. Although I certainly saw a few. Chris commented on my riding with a heart rate monitor, “What do you want that for, it’ll only scare you”. At the end I could barely speak, and review of the data illustrated his point rather well with my heart rate reaching points it’s never been before. Whether it was a result of sprinting out of corners or the sheer terror of an imminent crash into a tree or another rider I don’t know.

Suffice to say I can’t wait for the next one, if only to see the sight of my two year son screaming out like a rabid football fan to try harder on each lap.

Zondag weer met Marianne en Pascal naar het veldrijden.
Deze keer was het in Stramroy.
Marianne werd tweede en Pascal werd vierde.
Beiden werden in de laatste ronde ingelopen en voorbijgestoken.
Marianne werd daardoor tweede en Pascal vierde.

De foto laat het zadel van de fiets van Daan Bongers zien.
De zadelpen was van carbon en sprong in een klap uit elkaar tot daan na enkele balkjes weer op zijn fiets sprong.
Ik schrok enorm. Nee, Ik heb het niet op carbon. Het schijnt niet te kunnen buigen en klapt in een knal uit elkaar.
Na een afgeknapt stuur heb ik nu dan ook al een zadelpen uit elkaar zien springen.
Akelige gedachte.

s’Avonds ald gast mer Ria mee gegaan naar Geleen waar de PvdA afdeling Stein een gezellige avond had. Een avondje wokken.

Gistermorgen Kwam Marianne me ophalen om met haar mee te gaan naar Eigenbilzen in Belgie.
Daar was haar volgende cross van de Bedi Cup.
Kon ik mee als materiaalman en kon Ria op Judith passen.
Marianne en Pascal deden het beide goed.
Marianne won haar vijfde wedstrijd op rij in de Bedi Cup.
Pascal wist na een spannende wedstrijd de tweede plaats binnen te halen.
Modderig parcours en koud.
Wel puik verzorgd.

Vandaag was ik weer eens actief als materiaalman voor Pascal.
Er was slech weer voorspelt en wilden ze Judith niet meenemen.
Ria dus oppas en ik mee voor het materiaal. En het fototoestel natuurlijk ook mee.
De wedstrijd was in Schweiberg. En dat is in voorgaande jaren altijd een materiaalslacht geweest.

Het weer is goed gebleven. Het materiaal niet.
Bij de start heeft iemand tegen het versnellingsaparaat van de fiets van Pascal gestoten en dat apparaat is in het achterwiel van Pascal gaan zitten.
Resultaat afgebroken versnellingsapparaat en een spaak uit de velling.
Alles wat ik kon doen was een andere fiets aanreiken.
Uiteindelijk wist Pascal nog mooi terug te komen tot de zesde plaats.

Marianne nam van begin de kop en gaf die niet meer af.
Ze is veranderd op de fiets. Ik heb haar nog nooit zoveel macht zien uitstralen.
Mooie overwinning.

This oughta be cool. 

Considering the rain we’re getting today and expected tomorrow, the course should be nice and ready for them. Me, I’ll be merely spectating, hopefully on a dry Sunday.
