Khonghampat Orchidarium is located in Imphal, it is maintained by the Forest Department. The best time to visit the Orchaidarium is April and May. The Orchidarium is one of the most popular attractions in Imphal. It spreads to around 200 acres of land with more than 120 varieties of exotic species of orchids. The place is so colorful with its blooming flowers and sweet fragrance. The most interesting factor of Khonghampat is, there are some of the rare species of flowers that resembles lizards, moths and bees. People from all parts of the world come there to see these natures’ wonders. Orchids like Cymbidium and Cattleya orchids are the much adored ones along with some endangered species of orchids. Most of these species are rarely found in other parts of the world.

Manipur can be reached through Imphal airport. The state doesn’t have a railway station but the neighboring states have stations in cities like, Guwahati, Dimapur, Silchar etc. the state also have plenty of hotels and resorts for tourists to stay and enjoy Manipur.

I took advantage of the mild damp (actually, wet) weather today and stood my cymbidium outdoors. While I have been known to bang on about ‘inducing dormancy’ in houseplants, in practice I think a rest period is best kept as brief as possible – in their country of origin, these things would be more or less permanently in growth.

So, take advantage of any opportunity to keep them ticking over. It’s always good to keep handling your plants anyway (unless you know them to be poisonous), and I noted in picking up the cymbidium that a new growth bud has appeared at the base.

This is not a fledgling pseudobulb but an emerging flower stem, always an exciting discovery. This suggests I should start feeding – but not just yet. Growth won’t (indeed can’t) be rapid until we have passed the shortest day. So come the new year, I can start watering and feeding regularly to build up the developing flowers. I’ll report back on this in January.

Florile de cymbidium, din buchetul Simonei, poarta numele popular de “florile barca”.Nu stiu daca au un simbol anume, insa le putem atribui noi unul.Avand acest nume, sa le spunem florile celibatului.

Do you have a beautiful Cymbidium Orchid and you are wanting to repot it & or propagate it?  I bought my first adult flowering plant at Trader Joe’s of all places.  The orchid was grown by Westerlay Orchids in Carpenteria, CA.  It had beautiful yellow flowers, with no fragrance.

I tried self-pollinate the cym. by physically removing the pollinia and attaching them to the column, but I did not have an luck with the full maturation of the seed capsule, even

though a seed capsule developed (it shriveled up and died).  So

Cym Division

I decided that I should probably repot the orchid because the roots were looking white and not healthy.

I started cultivating orchids about a year ago and the cym. division was certainly interesting.

According to “Growing Classic Orchids” by Mike Tibbs, you can repot a cym. just before summer (which is when I attempted to).  I waited until after the plant finished flowering and proceeded to divide the plant, which was quite onerous.  I had to soak the plastic pot in water before it would budge!  After the plant was out of the pot (see left) I proceeded to use a sterile razor blade and remove all of the dead roots (which were quite numerous).  Healthy roots are green and supple.  The cym’s roots were white and soggy!  I placed the 2 plants in other plastic pots that had orchid bark in them and then added orchid bark on top to anchor the plant slightly.  I also removed a pseudobulb and placed it in a plastic ziploc bag with some spanghum moss and hung it in a cool spot in the garden.

The now 2 plants are doing great and the pseudobulb is producing a baby!  Email me with any questions you might have!

Few weeks ago, there was a stand from one of Orchids Societies/Clubs in Brandon Park Shopping Centre (Melbourne, Australia). There were many displays of the contest winning orchids which were not for sale, but they also sold other orchids which were mostly cymbidium varieties.

I wish I could grow orchids as good as those people. Only lately I could make my very few cymbidium orchids bloom. I found that Cymbidium orchids will grow better and will flower if I use orchid fertilizer and occasional feed of seaweed or fish emulsion. It has to be enough sunlight, if your orchid foliage is very luscious and too green but refuse to flower, it means it does not get enough sunlight. Cymbidiums that receive enough sunlight will tend to have slightly yellowish leaves. Also Cymbies will do better in a slightly crowded pot. If re-potting and dividing cymbidium orchid do not use pots that are too big.

Anyway, back to the stand from the Orchid Society in Brandon Park Shopping centre. I bought a small variety – Cymbidium Sarah Jean ‘Ice Cascade’. It is a cascading variety with small, almost pure white flowers. With compact growth habit and cascading blooms, this variety is perfect for hanging pots.

At its center lies an orchid house and different kinds of orchids, other flowers, gardening tools , equipment ,  which appeal to both guests and businessmen alike.

Sellers at the Orchidarium say the Cymbidium orchids  is one of the most popular varieties.

There are cattleyas, dendrobiums, native orchids which are sold in the place.

The chairman of the place is Mr. Aquilino Aromin . He served the group hot coffee, cold soft drinks,  pancit bihon, cinnamon bread , fresh mango slices.

The place had about 50 tenants selling different array of sub-tropical plants, upland cymbidium orchids, cactus, succulents, roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, hydrangea , potteries, fertilizers,wood carvings , soil composts etc…

I have now brought my cymbidium indoors for the winter, after summering it outside (in a shady spot). But I may put it outdoors again, if we have any mild, wet days.

Fluctuating late summer temperatures are supposed to stimulate flowering. We shall see – it isn’t until after Christmas (usually) that flowering stems appear.

But while the leaves are wonderfully firm after being exposed to the elements, the young growth (brighter green than the old) is showing dark spotting. This is almost certainly not the dreaded mosaic virus (which can only enter plants via wounds) but merely a response to cold. As the leaves are evergreen, these blemishes will persist – not really anything to worry about, but they are unsightly, and these parts of the plant will be slightly more vulnerable to disease. I shall have to watch it.

Estou animada com esse blog… sim tenho dificuldade em me manter fiel a blogar diariamente, mas até que estou me sentindo bastante a vontade com esse novo espaço! Não exige tanto de mim, e também transmite um pouquinho de paz como se fosse um lugar para ir quando não houver outro para estar!

Hoje acordei às 08:45h em ponto! Coloquei minha roupa de caminhada e peguei o Blackberry que uso como MP3, presente do meu querido amigo Alex (o conheci em um chat, outra hora conto essa história)… sai para caminhar!

Uma das coisas que me incomoda nessa cidade, é a quantidade de conhecidos que sou obrigada a me deparar quando saio na rua! Sim isso me irrita demais, não entendo bem o porque mas me irrita!

Enfim, fui caminhar… 20min para ir e o mesmo tempo para voltar. Foi bom, chego em casa com a mente mais limpa de quando sai… Sei que parei para olhar aquele mar lindo da Ilha, no meio do canal… o dia nublado, gotículas de chuva caindo no meu rosto… e percebi, que meus dias estão contados aqui, pois em breve estarei partindo para São José dos Campos com a esperança de mudar de vida e realizar minhas conquistas.
Senti naquele momento com mais significado do que já previra outras vezes quando paro para pensar, Ilhabela não é o meu lugar… posso até estar enganada, estar acreditando em uma ilusão… porém, não sinto que pertenço a este lugar!
Quem sabe mudando de vida, conclua em alguns anos que estou equivocada… mas dentro de mim acredito que estou certa!

Help!  My Cymbidium orchid is turning green this year. I hate green flowers!

Last year I bought this Cymbidium orchid in Caribbean market  (in Melbourne, Australia)and the colour was bright yellow with dark red throat. The reason I bought it because I liked the colour and also it was quite cheap in the market.

I don’t know exactly what kind of Cymbidium orchid it is as the seller herself did not know the name for it. After flowering last year, I re-potted it as it had already over crowded and almost cracked the pot. I found that whoever grew it did not even bother to use orchid mix/medium. It was grown in ordinary soil and it had become so compacted so it was so hard to loosen the roots. I was so afraid that I damaged them. Anyway, I managed to transfer it to a slightly bigger pot and I used proper orchid mix which consists of old wooden chips.

A year later today, it is having five spikes of blooms. I have applied special fertilizer for orchids and I also used sea weed mixture. However, I can’t believe what I see! My Cymbies have turned green with only a very slight yellow tint. I am not really happy to see this colour as I don’t like green flowers.

Does anyone also have the same problem? What can cause Cymbidium orchid to change colour? Is it because of the amount of the sunlight , or is it the medium or the fertilizer? How can I make it yellow again?

So it’s perfect planting weather here in the north of NZ at this time of the year. It’s nice and warm in the daytime, around 15 or 16 Celsius and the threat of frost is mostly passed, plus it’s raining a lot. It’s peak selling time and this is what is most in demand:

1. Fruit and Citrus Trees.
Always popular, but this year demand has completely outstripped supply. With the recession and the recent surge in food prices people are really looking to provide their own fruit and veges. I think this is part of a move towards healthier, less travelled food as well. Long may it continue as I feel that a lot of people begin their interest in gardening with food plants.

2. Camellias.
Beautiful Camellias are always popular in many climate zones, not only in the warm north but further south as well. They’re hardy, no problem to look after and good flowerers so a simple choice for all gardeners.

3. Vireyas.
I can’t personally get enough of these tropical Rhododendrons. They’re not as difficult to care for as some would have you believe and as long as they are watered in the summer months they almost never stop flowering. Love love love them!

4. Cymbidium Orchids.
We are selling a lot of these at the moment, everyone loves orchids and cymbidiums don’t take much care and the flowers are lovely.

5. Leptospurnum Flowering Manuka.
Cheap and cheerful, these lovely little shrubs really brighten up the garden at this time of the year. There’s a great range of colours available with double and single blooms. My favourite this year is a rather stunning scarlet number.

6. Larger Specimen Trees
With deciduous trees now dormant it’s the perfect time to get them in the ground. Swamp cypress, Scarlet oaks, Silk Floss and Liriodendron trees are all proving propular this year.

This beautiful orchid is found in Malaysia and Indonesia. The inflorescence erect producing enchanting greenish yellow flowers approximately 3 cm wide, has a erected round side lip, greenish in centre, edges white , with a few purple spots.

Cymbidium chloranthum prefers to be grown in a bright condition, approximately 75 % sunlight. It does grow vegetatively well in Singapore. It can grow into big clump of plants, but it is a fussy bloomer.

Cymbidium ini aku dapet dari daerah Sumatera Selatan. Bunganya menjuntai. Agak susah motonya karena bunganya yang menjuntai sampe kira2 sepanjang 1 meter. Karena tipe bunganya seperti itu, lebih baik jika bunga ini diletakkan di tempat yang tinggi.

Aku tempatin bunga ini di tempat yang kena cahaya matahari dari pagi sampai tengah hari (setelah itu ketutup bayangan pohon).

+ Cymbidium apare in comert din ce in ce mai des si in ghiveci, cu 1-3 tije pe care pot sa creasca zeci de inflorescente minunate. Cymbidium au si miros! Ele prefera un mediu rece-temperat.

+ Phalaenopsis este cea mai cunoscuta orhidee. Phalaenopsis, numita si orhideea fluture prefera conditii mai constante. Radacinile care ies din ghiveci nu trebuie taiate! Este de preferat sa fie udate o data si bine decat sa aiba umezeala tot timpul. Este indicat ca frunzele sa fie sterse ocazional de praf cu o carpa umeda.

+ Vanda apare si ea din ce in ce mai des in comert. Pot sa ajunga o planta de pana la 2m, dar in conditii de sera. Intre timp s-au facut multi hibrizi care pot fi crescuti in casa sau in apartament. Ele au nevoie de multa lumina si caldura. Este recomandat ca apa sa nu ramina in incheietura frunzelor cu tulpina.

Uitati-va la el cat este de   frumos si de proaspat si de gingas si de crud  si de …verde-vernil si de iubit!Fiindca nu ati zis  nimic ,de cate ori l-am aratat, mi l-am pus la avatar  .Sa nu credeti ,cumva,ca vi-l ofer…nuuu    nu m-am saturat de el,asa ca doar sa va uitati la el, cat este de special,atat ca forma cat si culoare, ale florii.Pare de ceara si se simte asa,de ceara,la atingere.Puneti si voi mana pe o petala,veti ramane uimiti.

Iar de miros….imi place sa ma apropii de flori si sa inspir pana la capat.Sigur ca stiu ca am nevoie de un suport special de flori,sigur ca sunt in cautare,dar tot sigur este ca nu am gasit nimic,asa ca locul acela,pe masa,este doar provizoriu.Am tinut sa precizez crezand ca acesta-i motivul…nu va place destinatia florilor mele din sufragerie.Regret.Nu le pot rezolva nici eu pe toate asa doar clicuind din nas ca Samanta,din pacate

What a super cute idea! This will be our 2nd year dyeing eggs (oh…the first year was SO stressful) and I thought this would be so cute as our table centerpiece. And it’s 50% off right now!

Moving on…I don’t have much of a green thumb. Like everything in my life (well, with alot), I try and do things with lots of gusto. meaning…I research, read, ask lots of q’s, etc…but when it comes to gardening, I’m not quite there yet. So when things bloom, I get super excited! mainly, because the plant didn’t die So what I thought was an orchid is actually a cymbidium. Don’t ask b/c I have no idea of the difference between the two. But it is a beauty and I can very much appreciate it.

This plus two orchids (which are in full bloom as well) sit on my patio table and every time I look out the window, I am amazed at how they did not die and better yet, how they managed to blossom! Now, if only I can replicate whatever I did right for next year…

UPDATE:  daca ati vedea ce culoare are…fosforescenta,galben-verziu,sau verzui-galbui ca de ceara!!Cand m-am dus la culcare am trecut sa-l vad,in sufragerie si am ramas inmarmurita…A…da,semana cu marmura,stralucea parca din interior,parca avea lumina proprie.Nicio alta culoare nu mi-as fi  dorit,doar asta,culoare pe care nu am mai vazut-o la alte flori.Superb!Si cred ca-i mai creste o tija,sau chiar doua de flori…Doamne..cat sunt de incantata!

Intru.La stanga mea sunt azaleele.Imi umplu mainile cu ele si trec spre dreapta,la vanzatoare.In drum trag cu coada ochiului…el era pe jos,chiar langa usa, de parc-ar fi vrut sa plece de acolo.Am auzit spunandu-mi ca nu-i place pe jos si nici atata lume care se vantura pe langa el.Dar nu m-am oprit caci azaleele din mainile mele ma zoreau ..hai odata,hai,ia-ne acasa la tine, nu te mai uita la altii,noi suntem trandafirii de munte,tu stai la munte,ce mai astepti?!Fara sa mai intreb nimic am platit si am plecat.Dar ceva din mine ramasese acolo.Eram fericita cu azaleele si le mai adaugai un cyclamen alb..ah…culoarea zodiei mele,de fapt nu-i culoare ci toate culorile la un loc.Ajung acasa,dar fara ganduri,doar eu,cea materiala.Astept cu infrigurare ora 3 si-un sfert,care vine cu greu si vine si el,Stapanul Inelului meu.Il duc in camera cu flori,ii arat si zic:uite,asta-i cadoul meu ,de la mine, pentru ziua mea.Zambeste.Bine,sunt frumoase.Ii dau de mancare(eu nu am mancat azi) si-i spun ca am vazut un Cymbi si m-am indragostit de el.Zice:pai sa-l aducem acasa.Eu,fericita sar in sus, ca un cangur, de bucurie,caci el,zgarcitul meu stapan al inelului meu are pe chip mimica relaxata,zambitoare,placuta si nu incruntata ca atunci cand socoteste facturile.Chiui de bucurie…ce norocoasa sunt!Cymbi este al meu…doar daca nu si-o fi gasit pe alta….

After meeting with so many brides these past weeks, it is getting quiet and I get to look over what is coming towards us this year in terms of styles.

Here are some of the color and flower trends that we will be working with this year:

1. Strong, Bold and Mixed Flower Palettes : Indeed, this year doesn’t seem to be one of monocolor, monofloral designs. It is the year of texture and complementary colors.

Orange + Electric Pink + Lime, Purple + Magenta + Lime, Orange + Eggplant+ Gold.

2. These are not going to be your usual roses either. Brides are going daring for branches, orchids and carnations. Yes, carnations are coming back with a big Boom and they find their place in large grouping next to royal cymbidiums and phalaenopsis.

3. Colors became luxurious names such as chocolate, mocca, eggplant, gold, copper and velvet.

I trust that this year will be a full of color  and dazzling one just like last year treated us and our designs.

It’s always a pleasure to see cymbidium orchids in flower. On one spike, flowers open up in a slightly staggered time frame. As  shown in the photo, taken minutes ago, the top center flower is almost fully open, while the other ones look like they’re about to burst out!

Notice the lovely cascade of wine-colored flowers on the non-staked spike (the stake in the photo was from a past season!). However, if I see that the stress from the weight of flowers is threatening the spike with breakage, I will take out some twine and gently tie it to a firmly planted spike. In other words, cymbidium spikes can break from the weight of the flowers so they do need to be occasionally monitored during the flowering phase.

The rounded succulent lobes in the foreground are from my jade plant – it will not be ignored!
