What?

It’s 2013 and Parisian ghetto District 13 has become so dangerous the authorities have walled it in and left its inhabitants to rot. But when a neutron weapon is stolen by a ghetto gang member, enter super-cop Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) and wrongly-imprisoned ghetto-dweller Leito (David Belle). They’re both hard-as-nails and experts in Le Parkour, an extreme sport involving wall scaling, roof-running and building-to-building leaping…

Why?

Quite simple really, I’m going to go and buy the sequel tomorrow and the girlfriend hasn’t seen the first. Had to step up and educate her didn’t I?

Worth It?

I love this movie, it’s such great fun and you can see Besson’s fingerprints all over it!

The action sequences really hit the spot and the use of Parkour never seems showy and serve the purpose of moving along the action sequences to the eventual conclusion. It’s also a really funny film in places too with some great physical comedy scattered through it’s running time.

It’s a shame Britain doesn’t try and make action films, we’ve very much rested on our laurels with the kitchen sink dramas, mockney gangsters and romantic comedies, It would be nice for us to tackle a big action flick like District 13.

On to the sequel!

Action filmmaker and producer Luc Besson has always had an eye for action and having the ability to showcase it in a strange and unusual way. He honed the skills of Jet Li and Jason Statham with glorious success. He even turned his ex-lover Milla Jovovich into a female wrecking machine.

Now Besson hopes to find the next great action star in French sensation David Belle who founded a new form of martial arts called parkour. This new form is basically where the artist attempts to pass obstacles in the fastest and most direct manner possible by running, jumping, climbing, sliding, ducking and so forth.

Co-writer Luc Besson and director Pierre Morel sculpt out a story where an undercover cop (Cyril Raffaelli) must infiltrate one of the nastiest neighborhoods in 2010 Paris. The neighborhood is District 13.

The cop is joined by a convict (David Belle) who will guide him in his pursuit to find a neutron bomb somewhere in the district. But the convict also has an agenda all his own. Don’t they always.

The film’s plot, setup, direction and cinematography leave a lot to be desired. But if they were all state of the art and amazing then I guess we wouldn’t really be able to see what Belle can do with his “parkour”.

The sequences where parkour is focused are amazing and the stunt work flawless. It kind of reminded me a lot of the better Jackie Chan movies. You know where you stop and say to yourself, how do they do that?

The acting in the film reminded me of old “Godzilla” movies or Power Rangers episodes because even though I saw the film with subtitles and in its original French it still looked like it was dubbed and the audio was horrendous.

A-class stunts + lame ass plot = rental. Or at least it does in my books.

■ À propos de cet article : J’ai interviewé Cyril Raffaelli en mai 2007 (si ma mémoire est bonne) pour la sortie, deux mois plus tard, de Die Hard 4 – Retour en enfer, dans lequel il joue Rand, un méchant. Je publie cet article aujourd’hui, car c’est la sortie de Banlieue 13 – Ultimatum, où l’acteur rempile pour le premier rôle, celui du flic Damien.

Le Français Cyril Raffaelli est cascadeur, chorégraphe * et acteur. Il combat Bruce Willis dans Die Hard 4 : Retour en enfer, sorti la semaine dernière (l’actu n° 2 338).

Comment a débuté cette aventure ?

Cyril Raffaelli : L’équipe de casting avait vu mon travail et m’a auditionné. Une fois sélectionné, je suis allé à Los Angeles pour quatre mois de tournage. C’était une expérience incroyable. Étant fan de la trilogie, je suis heureux de me retrouver dans cette saga mythique ! J’ai beaucoup appris en tant qu’acteur mais aussi sur le travail de chorégraphe.

Comment se prépare une cascade ?

Il y a d’abord l’entraînement physique : plusieurs heures de sport, beaucoup de répétitions et de préparation pour une scène. Quand je saute d’un immeuble à un autre avec sept mètres d’écart, il y a un câble mais il ne m’aide pas, c’est juste au cas où… C’est aussi un travail sur la force psychologique. Il faut se servir de sa peur pour aller au bout de ce qu’on veut réaliser ! Mais on ne prend pas plus de risques que dans un autre métier.

Tourner avec Bruce Willis n’est pas trop difficile ?

Face à Bruce, on est tellement intimidé qu’on n’a pas le droit à l’erreur, il ne faut pas le décevoir ! Il était hors de question de refaire des prises à cause de moi ! J’ai dû bosser à fond !

À l’âge de six ans, Cyril Raffaelli découvre les arts martiaux. Il maîtrise rapidement le karaté et le nunchaku puis entre en école de cirque à 14 ans. « J’ai ensuite pris des cours de théâtre afin de jouer, chanter et danser dans des comédies musicales. J’ai intégré la troupe de Starmania durant quatre ans. » Petit à petit, il double et chorégraphie les cascades de nombreux films. Il réalise le combat final dans Le Baiser mortel du dragon. Et décroche le premier rôle dans Banlieue 13, produit par Luc Besson.

* Chorégraphe (ici) :  personne qui organise et met en scène les séquences de combat dans un film. Par exemple, Yuen Woo Ping est le chorégraphe de la saga Matrix et de Tigre & Dragon.

■ À propos de cette interview : Elle est donc parue dans l’actu, le 20 juillet 2007. Cyril est super sympa ! On a bu un verre en terrasse près de Châtelet, c’était un agréable moment. À l’époque il me confiait « en off » qu’il était cascadeur sur le nouveau The Hulk, qu’il tournait la suite de Banlieue 13, etc… Marrant, quand j’y repense. Bref je n’ai pas vu Banlieue 13, ni sa suite, mais de l’action sans prise de tête, je ne dis pas non, on verra à l’occasion ! En tout cas, chouette souvenir !

This is actually a few days old but I haven’t seen it reported on any English film site yet. EuropaCorp has released the first bunch of official stills from the District B13 (original title B13: Banlieue 13) sequel, as well as a rather uninteresting on-set pic and the quite apocalyptic poster. Also, the French actioner, which was announced as Banlieue 14 (District B14) is now titled B13 – U: Banlieue 13 – Ultimatum (District B13 – Ultimatum), which is quite logical I guess since judging from one of the stills the film continues to take place in District B13.

I thought the first film was all kinds of stupid storywise and basically played like a beat ‘em all video game literally brought to screen, but it did boast some cool action (actually that was all the film had) and is probably responsible for all the Parkour we’ve seen in action movies recently. The sequel promises even more of the same, with Parkour stunts aplenty as can be seen in the production video diaries viewable on the official site. District B13, two years later. The government has changed, but nothing else… The isolation wall – higher, bigger, farther – has stretched around the ghetto suburbs and the gangs have become even more powerful. Trafficking is now divided between five ethnic neighborhoods, each headed by a ruthless gang leader. Determined to “solve the problem” now more than ever, the secret service deliberately adds fuel to the fire. Martial arts expert cop Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) and Leïto (David Belle), capable of snaking his way in and out of the suburbs as he pleases, once again team up to save the suburbs from chaos through hardcore fights and chase scenes that defy the laws of gravity.

Parkour creator David Belle (also seen in Femme Fatale and Babylon A.D.) and stuntman Cyril Raffaelli (also seen in Live Free Or Die Hard and Kiss Of The Dragon) return in the leads whereas MC Jean Gab’1, who played Nico in the first film, plays an apparently different role in this one, that od Molko. Also included in the cast are Moussa Maaskri (Dark Portals: The Chronicles Of Vidocq), Pierre-Marie Mosconi (Rules Of Silence) and Alaa Oumouzoune (Traitor) among others. Lancôme spokesmodel Camille De Pazis (The Singer) provides the obligatory love interest/eye candy.

Due to his being busy with From Paris With Love, another EuropaCorp production, District B13 helmer Pierre Morel (also director of the supercool Taken) does not return, handing over directing duties to Patrick Alessandrin (August 15th), making this his first action film. The film was penned by producer Luc Besson, who co-wrote the original with Bibi Naceri (The Code). Filming took place in Serbia and Paris, France. B13 – U: Banlieue 13 – Ultimatum will premiere in France on February 18th, 2009.

Awe-some. District B13 (Banlieue-13 was the original French title) was the movie that got me hooked on Parkour in the first place and now they’re making a sequel!

Here’s a translation of the synopsis I found via Quiet Earth:

“District 13, two years later. The government has changed, not the rest … The wall of isolation – ever higher, ever greater and Beyond – has spread around towns ghettos and gangs that have proliferated further increased their influence. The traffic is now divided among five ethnic neighborhoods, each headed by a fearsome gang leader. More than ever determined to “settle the problem,” the secret services voluntarily fire to the powder. Damien, a cop expert in martial arts, and Leito, able to sneak in every corner of the suburbs, make new team. Their goal: to save the city from chaos. Their program: Muscle and fighting for race-defying the laws of gravity.”

I haven’t delved into reviews of the world of film…until now.

Pierre Morel directed this 2004 French flick, which was released in English as District 13 or District B13.  Starring Parkour founder David Belle and his friend and fellow traceur Cyril Raffaelli, this movie is far and away the best action film I’ve seen in a long time.  It’s pseudo-futuristic, set in Paris in 2010, where their solution to the violent ghettos is to build giant walls around them.  The most dangerous slum, Banlieue 13, happens upon a nuclear bomb in their midst.  Hilarity ensues.  And when I say hilarity, I mean awesome ass-kicking action.  It’s in French, too, which might be a downer for some uncultured troglodytes, but for me, that instantly adds like a million cool points.  I love those darn francophones.

El pasado jueves como buen fan de Indiana Jones, fui a verla al cine, y además de parecerme la mejor película de acción-aventura que se ha estrenado desde hace mucho tiempo, me hizo recordar a esos grandes hombres, los especialistas, sin ellos las películas serian bastante más aburridas (de lo que, por desgracia son), por eso en homenaje a ellos que se juegan el cuello, muchas veces literalmente, para que nosotros, pequeños consumidores, tengamos algo que escribir en nuestros blog, os dejo un vídeo recopilatorio de Cyril Raffaelli un especialista/actor francés con extenso currículum en películas de acción, como la futura Tekken, dentro vídeo.

Após 6 meses um míssil é roubado e ao agente Damien (Cyril Raffaelli) é dada a quase impossível missão de desarmá-lo, pois está no distrito B13 e em poder de Taha. Damien tem menos de 24 horas para fazer isto, pois segundo seu chefe ao findar este tempo o míssil explodirá, matando milhões de pessoas. Então Damien se passa por um preso que está sendo transferido com Leïto e ambos \”escapam\”, mas nem toda a verdade foi revelada.

Eu gosto do Bruce Willis. Creio que desde a Série “A Gata e o Rato” (Moonlighting). Logo, assisto os filmes sem me “pré”-ocupar com críticas contrárias a atuação dele, ou mesmo ao filme. E após assistir, se for o caso, deixo a minha.

Gostei de “Duro de Matar 4“! Tem sim cenas meio que a la indiana jones. Outras até a la 007, mas com o Sean Connery . O Detetive até salta em cima de um Caça Nessa seqüência, confesso que torci para que um dos foguetinhos atingisse a parte que soltaria a parte detrás do caminhão; deixando-o livre só com a cabine.

O lance é que o filme prende a atenção. Mesmo em cenas onde só havia diálogos. Como nesse diálogo, quase monólogo entre, Farrell e McClane; onde Farrel fica espantado ao ver o outro procurar um noticiário no rádio do carro:

“- Escuta as news?
- Tem algum problema com as news?
- Sim, tenho um problemão com as news. Está pronto pra ouvir isso? As news são totalmente manipuladas. Tudo que você ouve diariamente é preparado pela mídia para fazer só uma coisa.
- Jesus!
- Para fazer você viver com medo.
- Medo?
- Medo total. Medo pra fazê-lo gastar dinheiro em coisas. Coisas que nem precisa e que já deve ter um monte. Para que continuem anunciando nas estações deles. E digo mais uma coisa. Está pronto?“

Outro ponto positivo foi a escolha dos atores. Houve química. Destaco também a participação de Kevin Smith.

Bem, Bruce Willis conseguiu me presentear com um ótimo sessão pipoca! Que venha um number 5, nem que seja para um… Duro de Matar 5 – a aposentadoria.

Em “Duro de Matar 4″ também veio algo que me irrita na tradução das legendas. É quando colocam na legenda o “190″ para o “911″ dos EUA.

Voici surement la plus belle gamelle de l’histoire de la télévision Française ! Ca se passe au Juste Prix et ce jeune homme va descendre les marches du gradin bien plus vite que prévu. Je dois avouer que c’est le genre de chute qui me fait exploser de rire !

Bon pour la petite histoire il s’agit en fait d’une cascade faite par un professionel (Cyril Raffaelli que l’on voit dans de nombreux films).
