After hearing more about the Roku channel program at my recent Smarter TV event, I just had to check

After hearing more about the Roku channel program at my recent Smarter TV event, I just had to check it out, so they lent me a demo and I have since fallen in love with it. Out of the box it was a delight – I put the batteries in the remote, plugged in the cables, AC adapter and ethernet (it also has wifi), found the onscreen instructions on Video 2, typed in codes at netflix.com/activate, pandora.com/roku, and that’s it – within minutes, for free, I was watching Leo Laporte and Kevin Rose. Simply put, the Roku channel program enables indie content producers to extend their reach into the living room, and although Roku does not offer a payments platform/apps store like Boxee will have mid-2010, Roku does allow content producers to monetize via subscription, PPV and ads outside the box. The pre-rolls for TWiT play beautifully. Content producers, take note – the field for quality content is wide open. Blip.tv has a couple of shows up like All’s Faire, Digits, and Meet the Mayfarers but whole genres are still empty, and even the very popular Beet.tv is not yet streaming through Blip’s news. There is a great potential for content producers to build audience and for audiences to discover fresh content. Star-studded sponsored sitcoms like EasyToAssemble and talking heads networks like FORA.tv would do well on Roku. Aside from the Channel Store, Roku is a cheap way to view Netflix Instant Watch, starting at just $79, the next step up is $249+ for TiVo, $199++ + $50/year for Xbox, $299 for PS3, and more for Yahoo! Connected TV. Even D-Link is not predicting a sub $100 price for it’s Boxee box. And Netflix itself is a deal at only $8.99/month for unlimited streaming on six devices plus one-DVD-at-time. Similar to its competition but with free access, Roku also offers Amazon VOD, Pandora, Flickr, and Facebook Photos. If you’re a content producer looking for a great gift for mom this holiday season, get your content up* on Roku and send her a box!

*SDK to be published later this week. Right now interested content owners can contact partners@roku.com.

Well, it seems as though the electronic brainiacs have blessed us again with some new technology to e-jack out-think the corporate media masses. Yay (no west-coast).

Boxee Box by D-Link, is a web-to-TV software program and hardware storage contraption that lets you consume all the free movies, TV shows and music from the internet that the user would like! It hooks up to your system with just a single HDMI cable, it doesn’t however, state the storage capacity. I’m sure it’s probably somewhere over 100 GB (I’m basing this off of TiVo & DVR storage capabilities). Download the standard Boxee software and it also uploads your own videos, music and photos, playing just about any media format that resides on your PC/Mac/laptop. I realize that you can still do some of this with your laptop, but this is just way cooler!

Beyond all that the Boxee Box does, from an artistic and visual design aspect…it’s pretty ill! At press time the MSRP is $200, which isn’t bad at all.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that my experience with TRENDnet’s TEW-635BRM ADSL route

I’m not exaggerating when I say that my experience with TRENDnet’s TEW-635BRM ADSL router is incredibly great. I’ve tried and worked with D-link, Linksys, 3COM, Thomson SpeedTouch, as well as Belkin routers numerous times before, however they manage to have some minuscule faults here and there; be it bad port forwarding, Type 3 NATing (PS3 users know!), poor WPA2 authentication, poor DHCP, interface only works with IE, random crashes, etc. and their firmware upgrades never do much to fix anything either.

TRENDnet is based on Linux. In fact, you can download their firmware’s GPL source code from their website if you wanted. Their web-based interface is simple, responsive, and all the options, except for the initial setup wizard, require no rebooting! Actually, there’s no reboot option at all on their interface; services are restarted within 3 seconds.

Some of its features:

Wireless N Draft 2 with MIMO – Up to 300 Mbps (270 Mbps tested)

2 SSIDs (with isolation option) – Primary and Guest Access

IPoA, PPPoE, PPPoA (autodetection) ADSL2/2+

WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WEP, 802.1x authentication

WDS, WPS supported

Modem-only Mode supported

UPnP, Application Level Gateway

URL and IP filtering

Wi-Fi Multimedia (WMM)

Quality of Service (QoS) with priority or rate capping (in kbps) on IPs and ports!

Multiple VPN Pass-through sessions for IPSec, PPTP and L2TP

Email notification (SMTP)

Syslog and Syslog server supported

Scheduling

Small & Energy Efficient

One year warranty

The best feature of all, it only costs 25 KD. I’m serious.

The one downside is that it doesn’t have Gigabit ethernet ports yet. The equivalent Linksys router that does, costs 60 KD.

You can buy this almost-ideal router in Hawalli at the Qairawan complex from a shop called Cameo located near the exit. Cameo is the only authorized reseller of TRENDnet products in Kuwait.

Posted by Dana Blankenhorn The Boxee Box, which will make its unofficial debut at CES next year, rep

Posted by Dana Blankenhorn

The Boxee Box, which will make its unofficial debut at CES next year, represents two key trends for 2010:

Open source with a standard retail business model.

The unity of all media.

As our Rachel King observes in her headline, this is an alliance between an open source software company and a hardware outfit, D-Link. This is important, because D-Link knows the channel and Boxee can supply the sizzle.

D-Link notes that there are a host of business-related applications for the Boxee Box, including training and meetings. On its blog, Boxee notes the consumer applications of the device, free movies, TV, radio, fun.

Both these desires need to be addressed for the creators’ goals to be attained. This can be a mainstream business device — go down to Fry’s and stick this in the conference room. That demand can be important in order to ramp up production and hit the consumer segment, the mass market Boxee needs to meet its goals.

Business applications are especially important when you consider this box will hit the market in the second quarter. Small business demand can lead to the multi-million unit orders that bring this in from China at a consumer price point for placement under the Christmas tree. Read more: http://blogs.zdnet.com/open-source/?p=5407&tag=nl.e019

A sold out crowd gathered at the Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn, NY last night for the unveiling of the Boxee beta as well as to catch a glimpse of the highly anticipated Beta Box.

Launched in 2008, Boxee is software that aggregates media content from the web and your personal computer and streams it on your HD television. It searches web based content providers like YouTube, Netflix, MySpaceTV, Blip.TV, CBS.com, Revision3, flickr, and Pandora, among others and brings the content straight to your living room television. Missing still from the list of content providers is the online video site, Hulu. In addition to streaming web content, it also pulls media content from your own personal computer including your ITunes, personal videos and pictures. Boxee is an open source platform allowing users to create their own apps. To date, there are over 300.

“Our biggest challenge is distribution,” said Boxee CEO Avner Ronen. The hurdle is getting cable affiliates and major content providers, like Hulu on board. At the core of the problem is fear of piracy and concern that the advertising is stripped from the content. However, Boxee pulls online content as is, which includes the advertising that is attached to it. Boxee also has the ability to track a host of analytics far outweighing television’s usage reporting. Ronen is hoping media companies and cable providers will become comfortable once they understand usage.

Four weeks ahead of its wide release at CES, Ronen introduced the beta software and Boxee Box, as well as announced the launch of 3 new apps: the hipster soft-core site Suicide Girls, the online gamer e-zine The Escapist and Clicker, TV guide, entertainment search engine and DVR all rolled into one.

Overall, Boxee Beta looks great and is much more user-friendly. The UI has been streamlined with a new layout. The menu, previously hidden, is now front and center. The home screen has been redesigned to feature the main menu, featured content, personal queue and the friend feed.

My favorite social networking feature is the ability to connect to your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Any media that your friends or followers share with you will automatically populate on your queue. Too busy to watch videos at work? Don’t have the ability to watch video because you don’t have an office or are on the go? Another feature allows a viewer to send media assets to your queue so you can watch when you get home.

The search function has also been streamlined. Now users can search for movies, TV shows as well as local and online content at once. Boxee Beta populates all content from your computer as well as from any web source that works with Boxee. Of note, you can now mark content as “watched.” Better yet, the search function lets you omit “watched” content from the results.

Boxee focused specifically on TV shows in the Beta redesign. TV shows are now organized by season and episode. You can follow your favorite TV shows, and like Hulu, it will automatically populate your queue with new episodes.

Another new feature is the Global Menu. This menu is essentially the shortcuts screen. It provides quick access to predetermined shortcuts, favorite apps, history, and settings.

Other features include allowing users to interact with the apps without having to download them, a now playing button on every screen allowing easier navigation back to the player, a new Last.fm and flickr interface as well as a main background that changes based on the time of day.

As of this writing, 85% of Boxee’s 700,000 users use a Mac. However, Boxee Beta has not forgotten about its Windows’ friends. It will now run on Direct X, which will mean a better experience for the PC user.

Boxee Box by D-Link

The night also included the highly anticipated unveiling of the Boxee Box. Boxee partnered with D-Link, better known as the makers of wireless routers, to create the hardware. Astro Studios, the cutting edge designers behind products like the X-Box 360 and Nike, designed the sleek cube. This small black submerged cube will sit on top of the many boxes taking up space near your TV. The guys at Boxee hope that eventually you’ll do away with all those boxes and just use the Boxee Box.

The Boxee Box will retail at $200 and will be available for distribution sometime in 2Q10.

Why Boxee?

I’m a three-screen user. I watch TV, while surfing on my laptop, with my phone not far away. Having used the Alpha, I don’t know if I can give up my computer that easily. As I was navigating the web content on Boxee, I found my multi-tasking self wanting to toggle out of the screen to search the web while the video played. Because I was unfamiliar with the navigation, or more like because I’m a specific type of navigator, all of a sudden I felt trapped. According to Andrew Kippen, VP of Marketing, “Boxee is about fighting tradition. It’s streamlining your viewing experience by consolidating it all into one. Boxee is the tip of the iceberg for what’s possible.”

The Boxee Beta version seems much more straightforward. It’s easy-to-use features will allow users to not feel so (excuse the pun) boxed in. Then again, in this case, that’s what the creators of Boxee want you to do. Engage with the content within the box.

Like a good one-two punch, now that Boxee Beta has been unveiled, here comes a glimpse of the company’s first hardware unit, the Boxee Box. D-Link takes the honors of being the inaugural hardware partner and Astro the designer. The Box, more like a submerged cube, boasts HDMI, SD card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, and ethernet for old school internet connectivity. Unfortunately, we don’t know at this point what’s powering it under the hood, but we’re hoping that NVIDIA collaboration on the beta software might suggest some Ion here. Target release sometime in the second quarter of 2010 for about $200.

A rowdy crowd of 650 gathered at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn for Boxee’s highly anticipated unveiling of its set top box tonight.

Boxee creates open source software that brings on-demand content from the Internet and home networks to TVs, and while the software has just reached beta, it is enlisting hardware partners to embed it on their devices. (Until now, it’s been available for OS X, Windows, Linux, and as a hack for Apple TV.) The $200 Boxee Box is the company’s first branded hardware device, manufactured by D-Link. It will become available in the second quarter of next year.

The Box is cube shaped, and is almost as tall as a soda can. It comes equipped with built-in Wi-Fi, and attaches to TVs through HDMI, optical cables, or even RCA cables. The display is 1080p.

Openness is a central theme of the Box: It is built to be expanded and modified. SD slots and USB ports allow users to attach external storage, as well as Web cams and other devices. Boxee is also encouraging developers to extend its software, and will provide APIs for tinkering with it.

Additionally, a private beta of Boxee was launched today, and several partners joined Boxee on stage to show up their applications. New content providers on the software include Clicker, The Escapist, and Suicide Girls. And students from New York University demonstrated a program called Trend Lines, which filters content based upon what topics are trending online.

Boxee has updated its software to work with Microsoft’s DirectX multimedia APIs, and is creating a 64-bit installation for Ubuntu Linux. Other changes include a streamlined user interface, as well as extended social networking capabilities.

Boxee box

Media center software company Boxee gave a sneak peek of its new dedicated hardware device that it will be releasing at CES early next month, and unveiled the latest version of its beta software tonight in Williamsburg.

At the Boxee Beta Unveiling event, the company showed off the first of what it believes to be many consumer electronics devices that will features its software as the front end for watching online video in the living room.

“By the end of 2010, we expect to be on many consumer electronics devices as the primary software,” said Zach Klein, vice president of product at Boxee. But for now, the new Boxee Box, which was previewed at the event, will be built by D-Link, and will be available during the second quarter of 2010.

Boxee box back view

D-Link will be the manufacturer, but the device was designed by Astro, the same company that designed the Xbox 360 hardware and some Alienware computers. The device, which is shaped like a submerged cube, is shorter than a coke can and will include WiFi, USB ports, an HDMI connection, and an SD card. The box will also have optical and RC video connections as backups, and will come with a remote. According to Klein, the box will be priced around $200.

On the software side, the new beta software is designed to simplify the user experience for end users. “We tried to make things simpler,” said Boxee CEO Avner. That included taking out the application menu, which was difficult to navigate, and putting content right in front of the user, as well as making it easier to find content that friends or other connections are watching on Boxee.

The company also added a box for featured content, which is currently picked by Boxee employees. But, Ronen alluded to the possibility of featured content being paid for by content owners. “We’re not getting paid for this — yet,” Ronen told the audience. “This is just stuff that we think is cool.”

The new software breaks out content into “shows,” “movies” and “music,” making it easier for users to find content that they are looking for, rather than searching through individual applications from programmers. But the most important aspect of the beta software could be the ability to customize the user experience.

The new version of the software allows users to add video programming to a section called “My Shows”– which will queue up new episodes of certain programs when they become available. The Boxee Beta also allows users to add some of Boxee’s 350 applications to “My Applications” — or, if they really like an application, they can add a bookmark to that app.

While not as key to the user interface or exploration of the content, the company says it has improved the quality of video running over the beta software, moving from OpenGL to DXVA and Adobe (s ADBE) Flash 10.1. As a result, Ronen says the software will be able to run on lower-overhead computing devices.

In addition to new features, Boxee introduced new content partners and application makers on its platform.Boxee has about 350 apps on the platform, about half of which Ronen says were created not by Boxee, but by the company’s partners. At the Boxee Beta unveiling, Boxee announced Suicide Girls, Clicker, The Escapist, Qurious, and NYU’s ITP as new application partners.

If I was infront of the computer I can usualy find out a way to fix things but over the phone it’s a bit harder.

I’ve found a couple of sites that make things easier.

ScreenShots.ModemHelp is a great website that has a ton of screen shots from Windows OS’s, Mac OS’s, Browsers, E-mail clients and more.

Also D-Link has a great page that has a heap of router emulators. I just wish other manufacturers has a similar thing.

So lately, I’ve been having issues with my interwebz, to where I have to reset my modem/router

So lately, I’ve been having issues with my interwebz, to where I have to reset my modem/router pretty much every other day, maybe even every day, and a thread on my local car forum led to me testing my newer D-Link router that I had bought to replace the bricked Linksys that I had before.

I had a Linksys WRT54G Version 2 router that I’ve had since the Version 2 first came out, and I’ve never had a problem with it. One day, I had an issue with the modem, so I had to power cycle that to get it to work again, and in doing so, I would normally power cycle the router right after so that all the signals go through and work correctly.

That day, for whatever reason, I thought it was a good idea to press the reset button on the back of the router, which basically returned the router to factory default settings instead of just power cycling itself.

Seeing that, I said “oh wtf?” and went ahead and logged into the webgui and tried to change the settings back to the way they were right away. Upon the first “save settings” click, it froze, and when I power cycled it, it wouldn’t power back on anymore. The power light would just keep blinking.

Fast forward to yesterday, and I was determined to give it a try to try and revive, or un-brick my Linksys, as I had narrowed most of my problems to the D-Link router that I had.

Friend of mine gave me a few webpages with different methods to revive the router to check out, and the more easier ones didn’t work, and I literally came to the “try this as the last step because there is only a 20% success rate” step, the step right before “put on your coat and go down to Best Buy and buy another one” step.

It involved opening the router’s casing up, finding the flash chip on there, locating a specific pin, and using a copper wire to ground that pin to the antenna base. However, the pin is so small, that I actually had to separate the strands and just use 1 strand of wire to touch the pin, while the other end of the wire, I just twisted all the strands together and touched it to the antenna’s base.

This step, however, I would highly suggest that you have a second person to help you, because you need to hold that wire on that pin, and only that pin, while you ground the other end to the antenna, which will take up both of your hands, and while you’re grounding it out, you need to plug the router in to give it power, thus completing the circuit and grounding the pin out. I had Krystal plug in the router, while I held the wire in place, all the while looking at the cmd screen’s continuous ping attempts to see if it will give me a “TTL=xxx” response. Right as Krystal plugged in the router, I started getting TTL=100 responses, so I started the TFTP process to load the new firmware onto the router. Soon, it was back up and running!

It was an awesome feeling, and I literally felt like I was doing the equivalent of using defibrillators on the router to shock it back to life lol

Thus the title.

PS – I will put up the guide that I used to bring it back to life on my next post. Gotta run to the in-laws’ to prepare Thanksgiving dinner!

Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

“But I have a good router already! My ISP gave me it, it must be the best!” Man if I had

“But I have a good router already! My ISP gave me it, it must be the best!”

Man if I had a couple of bucks every time I’ve heard that, I’d be so rich by now. Fact of the matter is, it’s unfortunately far from the truth, and many ISP-provided routers truly suck.

I work with VoIP, and running a Voice call over the internet may be easy with Skype, and you may be OK with choppy calls, but when you’re running an enterprise-grade telephony system, you don’t have the same tolerance for bad quality. Same for Home users, you should not have to put up with daily restarts!

What does that have to do with you? Most probably everything! If you’re here it’s likely because you’re having issues with your internet, and either you think it’s related to your router, or I’ve referred you here from PressF1.

So let’s clear the air about a few routers:

The D-Link DSL-302G is quite possibly the worst router of all time. They should be all be burned in one great big bonfire and D-Link publicly mocked for them.

Dynalink have their overheating RTA1320 that gets so hot the plastic melts and changes from light cream to a rusty looking orange or brown. It’s not the best choice in router. NetComm have suggested it was just a small “batch” that they recalled which had overheating issues, and the firmware is decent, however where possible I avoid them.

Telecom have been giving away a 2Wire 2070-series Router and Thomson TG585v7 modems. They’ve got some of the worst web interfaces I’ve ever used, but at least they’re semi-reliable. Again though, they must be cheap routers if they mass-produce them and Telecom gives them away. $199 value? Whatever! Nobody in their right mind would spend $199 on them!

Orcon with their HomeHub / BizHub router which is a Siemens SX-763. Best mentioned so far, but again far from the quality that a router should be. It’s locked-down so you can’t change the USB port or VoIP settings (Though performing a factory reset with the button on the underside fixed that for me), it doesn’t overheat, but for a “VoIP router” it doesn’t handle a VoIP server running behind it well at all. Mediocre, but still better than the Telecom stuff I must say.

The Belkin N1 is overpriced and fails to deliver in so many ways. I’m not sure why, but around 60% of all the N1’s I’ve dealt with just seem to have packed up and died. Their ADSL performance / reliability was mediocre anyway. suffering from irregular reboots.

The Netgear DG834G has firmware issues, wireless isn’t reliable, average broadband performance and reliability, but to be honest it’s probably the most reliable router I’m recommending people avoid. They’ve got some other open-source stuff that doesn’t have ADSL Support which is actually really quite nice.

Linksys, yes I love Linksys stuff but man did they mess up badly with the WAG160N. That thing falls over almost as much as the Dynalinks. Sure, I’ve seen ADSL Sync speeds go up when compared with the likes of a Telecom Thomson TG585 by around 3m/bit, but that means nothing to me if it’s not going to function day in and day out reliably.

What’s the solution then? So many bad routers out there, most free, what can you do about it?

Well don’t take the free stuff that your ISP gives away. There’s a reason why it’s free, and that’s not because it’s a good, quality router!

Tell me what I SHOULD buy then? What are good routers?

If you’re a home user or small-business and want an all-in-one solution that “just works”:
NetComm NB6Plus4Wn

If you’re a geek or a business, or perhaps you want a little more control over your router, maybe you give your internet connection a hammering, or if you want QoS (Quality of Service) to prioritize VoIP / Gaming above other traffic, then you want:
A Linksys AM300 in Halfbridge to a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato Firmware

Please drop me a comment and say Hi, let me know if this has helped you or got you thinking in any way, or perhaps if you’ve got one of the routers then just say so. Always happy to hear from readers.

Cheers

Chill.

The easiest way to tell is to use your computers network viewer to view available wireless networks. If your wireless network shows a little padlock symbol, or if it requires a password to access it, then you are probably ok. If your wireless security is not configured, it would be recommended to get it setup as soon as possible. Each wireless router will be different when setting up the security options. We have linked some helpful pages for some of the main manufacturers of wireless routers:

Yesterday, I went to Plaza Low Yat to send the router for warranty because my Buffalo router’s port was spoiled. (Again!) It will be repair after 3/4 weeks. But, I can’t survive without internet in these 3 weeks!

Guess what? I just knew that Windows 7 was released (I waited for a long time) and available right now! After I bought the Creative speaker (my speaker had problem few months ago), I survey Windows 7 Home Premium price. And so i bought the Windows 7 Home Premium (RM429, quite expensive)! However, I did not buy router that day. Today, I went to Plaza Low Yat again to buy router. I bought a D-Link N wireless router (I will have 2 routers when the Buffalo router was repaired and sent back), then I went back home.

I completed the installation of Windows 7 by 6.30 p.m., and I downloaded programs and done what I need to do by 7.50 p.m.. COOOOOL! Windows 7 was alot nicer than all Windows! It has thousands of features which I haven’t explore! Finally, after few weeks of waiting, I got my own original Windows and it’s the newest!

Opps, I’m going to explore more of it now, so I will save my words for another day! My PC, simplified.
