You mentioned Sierra Leone in the article and I was born in Sierra Leone. This, I would declare, invited me to this discussion. My focus is on DEMOCRACY because that was the genesis of your argument.

Unlike all the academic, religious, ideological and philosophical definitions of democracy, democracy is a state of MIND. Democracy is in your THINKING. Therefore, the fundamentals of democracy are the:

These are the fundamentals for democracy. Therefore, anyone not possessing these qualities is a liar to claim leadership of democracy.

I quit because I was right there in the milling the Separator House, where every evening the superintendent weighed the daily diamonds output, and I would document the cartage. I knew how much wealth was sucked out of my country into London, Belgium and New York, yet my people had none of it. My FTHR (father) worked for that company for 35 years and died poor. Accepted historical fact often turns out to be mere fiction. That’s not only the underlying theme of J. Christoph Amberger’s The Lazarus Smile. But sometimes even modern media remind us of this truth:

Decline and fall: Most of the things that “everybody knows” are wrong. One of them surfaced in Bruce Anderson’s Monday piece: the familiar idea that the fall of the Roman Empire was accompanied, if not caused, by spectacular dissipation on the part of its ruling class. Anderson was arguing that drug prohibition should be relaxed. “The aim of these measures would not be the promotion of universal hippydom: still less, to bring the decadence of the late Roman empire to the streets of south London.”

In fact the familiar monsters of depravity — Caligula, Nero, Domitian, Commodus — ruled the Roman Empire at the height of its power in the first and second centuries. The nonentities who presided over its decline in the fourth and fifth centuries — Honorius, Arcadius, Valentinian III — were Christian gentlemen of comparative personal respectability. No druggies they.

And here is a piece of more recent history. “Hippydom” should be “hippiedom”. They say that if you remember the Sixties you weren’t really there, but I definitely remember the spelling of “hippie”.

I would like to begin this post by saying I love the work that is being done by the Arquivo Regional da Madeira.  They have been extracting information from their records and compiling a database.  It makes doing research very simple.  Thanks for this vital work.

But, this post could also be titled “why primary sources are so important.”  I have been reviewing some copies of these original documents that were filmed and part of the Family History Library microfilm collection of the LDS Church.  I looked at the marriage record that I have for Paulo da Silva to his wife Júlia Coelho dos Santos.  I was double checking the dates I have in my database, and I took a look at the little note in the margin.  Here’s a scan of the margin:

It is a little note that says that he was born on the 18th of February 1835, married a second time 28 June or July (my Portuguese is poor) 1868 and died 26 July (I think) 1910.  That sure is nice to get all that information from one record.  Then I realize, sadly for the first time, that it says he was married a second time in 1868.  I would have never known that if I didn’t look at the primary source document!

So what did I do next?  Well I hopped over to the Arquivo Regional da Maderia website and search the marriage record with “Paulo%da Silva%” as the husband and 1868 as the year.  Sure enough the database says Paulo da Silva married Maria Antónia de Vasconcelos in the parish of Porto Santo in 1868 (according to book 6302 page 7).  See I love their work.

Now armed with this information I hit the baptism records.  I search again for “Paulo%da Silva%” and “Maria%de Vasconcelos%” (I use the % wildcard when I search these databases) and find the following children

So I now have a second family group!  The thing that I love to do is use both sources together.  Do searches using the ARM databases (since their archivists are more skilled at reading these documents than me) and use it like an index to find records when I order a film to from the FHL.

So that’s what I’m going to do.  It also leaves me with a question on when Julia Coelho died.  This was a great find!

El uruguayo Santiago Silva convirtió su décimo tanto en el Apertura 09 y lidera cómodamente la tabla de goleadores. A continuación repasaremos a los cuatro jugadores charrúas que supieron ser los máximos artilleros en la Argentina: Enzo Francescoli, Rubén Da Silva, Sergio Martínez y Gonzalo Vargas.

Repasando la historia, tan solo cuatro jugadores del otro lado del charco pudieron ser los máximos anotadores de un torneo. Enzo Francescoli, jugador emblema de River Plate,  fue el primero en lograrlo, allá por el Metropolitano 1984, con 24 conquistas. Revalidó su chapa goleadora en la temporada 85/86, con 25 tantos, que colaboraron para que el conjunto de Núñez sea campeón. Por última vez, en el Apertura 1994, aportó 12 goles para una nueva vuelta olímpica de su equipo.

Rubén Fernando Da Silva, más conocido como Polillita, también se vistió de gloria con la banda roja en el pecho ya que en el Clausura 1993 conquistó 13 tantos y nadie logró superar su marca. Por si alguien dudaba de su capacidad, obtuvo este mismo logro cuatro años más tarde, en el Apertura 1997, pero con la camiseta de Rosario Central, tras convertir15 goles.

El complemento perfecto de Da Silva pareció ser Sergio Daniel “Manteca” Martínez, que fue el goleador los mismos años que su compatriota pero en el otro torneo. No se cansó de inflar la red con la casaca de Boca Juniors: 12 en el Apertura 1993, con la dupla de “Betos”, Acosta y Márcico,  y 15 en el Clausura 1997,acompañado por Diego Latorre y Gabriel Cedrés.

El más reciente de los casos fue la aparición de Gonzalo Vargas, en Gimnasia y Esgrima de La Plata. Su racha se vio plasmada en el Clausura 2006, donde alcanzó 12 anotaciones, una por encima de los históricos Martín Palermo y Ernesto Farías. El conjunto platense alcanzó la quinta colocación y redondeó una muy buena actuación en este certamen.

Actualmente, Banfield está teniendo un torneo formidable, se encuentra invicto (6 PG y 5 PE) y pelea la punta del torneo, en gran parte gracias a la capacidad goleadora de su número nueve, Santiago Silva. El uruguayo, que espera ansiosamente el llamado de Tabárez para representar a su selección, convirtió 5 goles de jugada, 3 de cabeza y 2 desde el punto del penal. Es una garantía para Falcioni, su técnico, y un peligro constante para sus rivales.

¿Se sumará Silva al selecto top 4 de goleadores uruguayos? ¿Logrará superar el record de Da Silva y Martínez, de 15 goles, en torneos cortos?. El tiempo se encargará de develar la respuesta a estas preguntas…

Les larmes de Lula ont quelque chose de chaleureux, bon enfant de 63 ans, Lula ou Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva donne l’impression que l’on peut compter sur lui.
Le petit Lula n’a t’il pas quitté l’école à 10 ans pour des petits boulots dans la rue (cireur de chaussures, vendeur de cacahuètes) pour aider sa mère et ses 7 frères tous plus âgés que lui. ?

De horrortrap van Witsel op Wasilewski zindert nog steeds na in het voetbalwereldje. Terwijl Anderlecht en Standard nog steeds discussiëren over de strafmaat van Witsel, moet er eens grondig nagedacht worden over hoe de voetbalbond zulke fouten in de toekomst moet aanpakken. In ieder geval was het een trap die plots alle frustraties naar boven bracht.

In februari ‘08 gingen de afschuwelijke beelden van Eduardo Da Silva de wereld rond. De Braziliaanse voetballer van Arsenal kreeg  in de wedstrijd tegen Birmingham een zware tackle op zijn steunbeen. Da Silva  moest een jaar aan de kant blijven, dader Martin Taylor werd amper drie weken geschorst.

Anderhalf jaar later gebeurt iets gelijkaardigs, maar dan wel op een Belgisch voetbalveld. Deze keer is de situatie een pak ingewikkelder. Gouden Schoen Axel Witsel trapt vol frustratie het scheen- en kuitbeen van Marcin Wasilewski over tijdens de wedstrijd Anderlecht – Standard. Het zit er weer bovenarms op tussen de rivalen uit Brussel en Luik.

In mei was er al heel wat te doen rond de harde speelstijl van Anderlecht en Standard tijdens de play-offs. Ook tussen het bestuur van de twee clubs is de relatie al een tijd vertroebeld, mede dankzij enkele transfersoaps. Denk maar aan Van Damme en Mbokani.

In februari '08 beging Taylor een gelijkaardige fout op Da Silva

Dat de tackle van Witsel te laat was en dat die fout een rode kaart verdiende is voor iedereen wel duidelijk. Enkel voor zo’n fout moet je al enkele weken schorsing krijgen. Als tweede moet je de vraag stellen was het opzettelijk of niet. Eerst kon ik het moeilijk geloven, maar Witsel liet al uitschijnen dat hij geen intentie had om de bal te spelen. Ook dat verdient enkele weken extra op als schorsing.

Maar waar ik wel van overtuigd ben is dat Witsel nooit de intentie had om  het been van Wasilewski op zo’n manier te breken. Dat wil niet zeggen dat de fout minder erg is, want als je op die manier naar een bal gaat moet je nu eenmaal rekening houden met de gevolgen. Deze zijn enorm pijnlijk, en dat is nu eenmaal de pech van Witsel en Wasilewski.

Toevallig of niet is het net Wasilewski die de fout moet incasseren. De Pool van Anderlecht stond al langer bekend om zijn wilde tackles, elleboogstoten en drieste speelstijl. Sommige fans van Standard hoor je zeggen: “Zijn verdiende loon”. Daar waar ik die ergernis wel begrijp, is ook dat een redenering die totaal op niets slaat.

Sommige stellen voor om Witsel even lang te schorsen als Wasilewski buiten strijd is. Er zit wel gerechtigheid in die regel, maar om die nu zomaar snel snel toe te passen op Witsel is overdreven. De voetbalbond moet gewoon op voorhand eens duidelijk maken wat de straffen zijn voor deze fouten. Want als Wasilewski zijn been op tijd terugtrekt en Wistel raakt hem niet, wordt er niets eens over gesproken en toch is de intentie van Witsel hetzelfde: een gemene fout maken op de Pool terwijl de bal al lang weg is.

Over zware fouten gesproken, Wasilewski heeft al zeker al tackles gemaakt die even erg zijn als die van Witsel. Het verschil is gewoon dat de Pool hier niet meer op tijd weg kon omdat hij zelf een tackle inzette. De beelden van de ellebogen van Wasilewski op veerschillende spelers zijn minstens even erg. De gevolgen zijn gewoon minder.

Wat als de elleboog van Wasilewski recht in het oog komt van een tegenstander en hiermee iemand gedeeltelijk blind maakt? Gelukkig is dat niet gebeurd, maar het had zeker gekund.

Misschien moeten we niet alleen actief, maar ook retroactief ingrijpen. Alle tackles met de voet vooruit die geen bal raken moeten gewoon zwaar bestraft worden. Gebeurt dat niet op het veld, dan maar op basis van de beelden achteraf. Zo is Dirar ook -terecht- gestraft voor spuwen tijdens de wedstrijd tegen KV Mechelen.

Het klinkt erg, maar Wasilewski moet een voorbeeld zijn voor de toekomst. Spelers met een drieste speelstijl moeten maar eens in de spiegel kijken en zich de vraag stellen: “Hoor ik wel thuis op een voetbalveld?”. Gestrekte voet vooruit, ellebogen, tackles langs achteren,… het heeft gewoon niets met voetbal te maken.

Ook de zogenaamde tackles op de bal. Velen denken dat als ze een tackle doen op de bal, dat die tackle dan automatisch correct is. Het spelen van de bal en de man in één tackle is gewoon een fout. Het steunbeen raken van iemand die aan de bal is mag ook niet.

Wasilewski deelt een elleboog uit aan De Camargo

Niet alleen de fans, maar ook spelers, trainers en bestuur van Anderlecht en Standard moeten de emotie even aan de kant schuiven. Enerzijds is er de laconieke houding van Standard en anderzijds de furieuze houding van Anderlecht. De twee houdingen zijn te begrijpen, maar laat gewoon de voetbalbond beslissen. Met verbaal geweld gooi je enkel zout in de wonde, en dat kan iedereen wel missen.

Aan de kant van Standard betreur ik vooral de commentaren van Defour en  het feit de de club in beroep gaat. Uit respect voor Wasil doe je zoiets niet vind ik. Langs de kant van Anderlecht snap ik de frustratie, maar de aggresieve verbale uitlatingen van onder meer Van Holsbeek zijn er ook net iets over. Zoals ik al zei was Wasilewski ook niet heilig.

Hoe meer van deze heisa er in de media verschijnt en hoe meer van die uitspraken er komen, hoe meer de boel opgenaaid wordt. Vergeet niet dat de twee clubs dankzij de play-offs nog vaak tegenover elkaar komen te staan dit seizoen.

 Ter illustratie, in deze video zie je enkele tackles van Wasilewski die even zwaar zijn, maar waar gelukkig geen slachtoffers vielen. Ik praat de tackle van Witsel absoluut niet goed en ik vind het heel erg wat er met Wasilewski gebeurd is,  maar deze video werpt even een andere blik op de zaak. (De video heb ik niet zelf gemaakt.)

La Copa de Liga fue una competición que duró en España entre los años ´82 y ´86, la cual permitía un cupo directo a la UEFA. En las cuatro ediciones en disputa, el Real Madrid y Barcelona se repartieron los galardones, pero fue en la edición 1983-1984 que irrumpió un inédito ganador… el Real Valladolid.

La actuación memorable de Fenoy que cerró con un candado su portería, impidió que el gran Hugo Sánchez abriera el marcador para el Atlético de Madrid. Moré fue un baluarte en el centro del campo, lo mismo que Aracil. Richard se encargó de opacar a “Hugol” Sánchez y por supuesto Pato Yañez obligó a su marcador Tomás recurrir al foul recurrente para bajar al extremo chileno.

Finalmente fue en el alargue que se pudieron sacar ventajas ambos equipos. Centro del “Pato” Yañez (que ya era medio gol) y Votava encaja en su propio arco. Luego Fortes calma los ánimos vallisoletano hasta que Mingúela sella la victoria, el primer título y el pase del Real Valladolid a jugar un torneo continental, en este caso, la UEFA.

La période estivale commence et voilà peut-être l’occasion de lever un peu le pied, de prendre un peu de temps pour soi. Pourquoi pas une parenthèse avec les enfants, un moment suspendu et partagé le temps de se plonger dans un livre. Voici quelques suggestions, pour les yeux et les oreilles puisqu’il s’agit de cd-livres. Tout d’abord, quelques titres qui allient le conte et la chanson française.

Toto ou tartare

“Toto ou Tartare” est une collection qui illustre à merveille cette thématique puisqu’elle est issue de la collaboration entre le label “Tôt ou Tard” et l’éditeur “Actes Sud”. Une série de chanteurs ont écrit une histoire et les chansons qui l’accompagnent, ils prennent parfois part au récit, plus rarement à l’illustration. Ces albums permettent de retrouver l’univers musical de l’artiste et de le faire découvrir à l’enfant. Les récits sont entrecoupés de chansons qui prennent part à l’histoire mais sont écrites, composées et interprétées de telle manière qu’elles peuvent être appréciées indépendamment. Chaque enfant, selon son âge, son humeur, … s’attardera sur un épisode précis, une chanson ou une image en particulier et pourquoi pas l’ensemble pour les plus grands d’entre-eux. Il est assez difficile de dire à quelle tranche d’âge est destiné un livre, même s’il est possible d’établir de grandes categories. Tous les albums proposés ici peuvent être appréciés dès deux ans et demi, à vous de cerner le rapport de vos enfants à la “lecture”, seuls ou accompagnés, …

“Le peuple des dunes” est écrit, composé et chanté par Da Silva, illustré par Françoiz Breut et raconté par Yannick Jaulin (avec la participation de Cali et Marie Drucker). C’est l’agitation sur la plage bretonne de Boutrouille, un animal gigantesque vient de s’échouer. Nous devons également “Le mystère des couleurs“, au duo Da Silva – Françoiz Breut qui en plus d’illustratrice se fait conteuse pour cette histoire de corbeau peintre qui adore les couleurs. Mais comme tous les corbeaux, Coco est noir, tout noir et c’est bien ce qui le chagrine. Voyez comment, avec ses amies les corneilles, il va chercher à percer le mystère des couleurs. “Quand on arrive à Malidor“, c’est magique! Mais encore faut-il y arriver. En effet, Malidor c’est le pays des rêves et Mousse, la souris, est tellement impatiente d’y rejoindre sa soeur, déjà endormie, qu’elle ne parvient pas à trouver le sommeil. Jolie aventure créée et chantée par Franck Monnet, contée par Natacha Régnier et pour les yeux, les superbes illustrations vibrantes de couleurs et de matières de Vanessa Hié. Et encore dans la même collection, “Soleilman” par Dick Annegarn et “Le quartier enchantant” interprèté par les groupes Bombes 2 bal et Fabulous Trobadors et illustré par Tom Schamp, talentueux artiste bruxellois. Ses images pétillantes, colorées et truffées de détails sont à ne pas rater (il ne s’agit malheureusemant pas ici de sa meilleur réalisation).

La prochaine fois je vous le chanterai…

Même orientation chanson pour la collection “La prochaine fois je vous le chanterai…” (Aux “Editions du Rouergue” en collaboration avec l’émission de Radio France du même nom) mais la manière est un peu différente. C’est ici une seule chanson par album, proposée dans sa version originale et commentée par Philippe Meyer qui dirige la collection. Une perle choisie dans le répertoire de la “chanson à texte” et confiée à un illustrateur chargé d’égaler en images la saveur des mots. Deux titres actuellement disponibles à la médiathèque (et d’autres à venir): “La complainte du progrès“ de Boris Vian, illustré par Lynda Corazza et “Les goûts d’Olga“ de Gérard Morel, illustré par Frédérique Bertrand.

Renaud, Serge Bloch & Gérard Lo Monaco

Je conaissais déjà Docteur Renaud et Mister Renard et voilà que j’ai découvert Renaud le conteur . Il ne faut pas forcément aimé le chanteur pour apprécier ses livres. La voix un peu rugueuse porte le texte avec simplicité et justesse. Les messages, tout simples, prônent pour une meilleure qualité de vie, la quête de la liberté et de soi-même. Ils permettent de découvrir un Renaud ami des animaux et de la nature. “Le petit oiseau qui chantait faux“ et “La petite vague qui avait le mal de mer“ tous deux mis en images par Serge Bloch et Gérard Lo Monaco proposent à chaque page une surprise visuelle. A partir de découpes dans les pages et d’images en abyme, à la façon des livres italiens des années 50 pour le petit oiseau et en jouant sur les reflets argentés pour la petite vague.

En bref

Hors de toute thématique, si ce n’est encore et toujours celle du plaisir partagé, trois derniers titres. Tout d’abord, “Ours fait ce qu’il veut“ d’Anne Ferrier, nous emmène sur les pas de cet ours mal léché qui n’en fait qu’à sa tête. Jusqu’au jour où, forcé et contraint, il devra se soucier un peu de tout ceux qu’il avait jusque là malmené. L’album profite des couleurs toniques de l’illustrarice (à suivre) Delphine Chedru et l’ours, qui aime chanter à tue tête, se ballade tout naturellement sur des airs de W.A. Mozart

Julia Donaldson raconte l’histoire de cette petite souris qui se promène dans la forêt, tout simplement. En chemin, elle rencontre le renard, le hibou et le serpent qui la trouvent bien appétissante… Comment va-t-elle se sortir de ce mauvais pas? Mais bien sûr! Comment, vous ne connaissez pas le Gruffalo? Les dessins d’Axel Scheffler vont vous permettre de le découvrir.

Léo va fêter son anniversaire et pour l’occasion il invite les animaux du monde entier. Cette trame toute simple est le fil conducteur de cet imagier original et permet de passer de l’aboiement du chien au vrombissement de l’avion en passant par le rugissement du tigre et bien d’autres encore (cheval, phoque, chimpanzé, hippopotame, …). “Animal bazar“, voyage sonore, musical et visuel est illustré par Irène Schoch qui utilise le pochoir, ce qui est plutôt rare et mérite d’être signalé.

On the eve of the G-8/G-20 summit in L’Aquila the presidents of France and Brazil jointly published an article in The Huffington Post, the world’s first and famous internet newspaper, titled ‘Alliance for Change’. Their choice of this outlet speaks volume, men of such caliber never do anything without careful consideration.

The first thing comes to mind is a desire to reach a vast international audience more inclined to follow their vision of a new system of world governance. We can therefore assume that whatever it is they are suggesting is revolutionary enough to stir up some controversy and at least for now made them stay away from more traditional news channels.

What Mr. Sarkozy and Mr. daSilva are jointly suggesting is no less than a redundancy of the Group of 8 (G-8) in favor of a much wider allegiance of nations with respect to issues concerning global governance. A multilateral system that was conspicuously unrepresentative and lacking in coherence must be reformed to build a more just, developed and sustainable world.

The G-20 or similar to L’Aquila the G-8 together with the G-5/G-6 are both multilateral platforms on which to discuss various global issues in an interconnected framework. Those issues are indeed monumental and both presidents acknowledged the urgency of a multilateral system by highlighting most of the challenges that face the global community in the 21st century.

Peace and collective security require a wide-ranging reform of the U.N. Security Council. The voice of workers must be heard and their desire for more social justice and greater security met by strengthening the role and influence of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in global economic governance. Last but not least on the agenda of such an international framework is the enormously challenging task of regulation of international finance.

From Huff Post,  both presidents: The decisions taken by the G-20 to improve the regulation and oversight of international finance, to curb speculation, to crack down on tax havens and money laundering centers, and to foster growth must be implemented.

Politicians are very often a bunch of stoic bureaucrats, but no not this time. Sarkozy, daSilva and hopefully others at the recent summit are ready to see eye to eye maybe for the first time with their constituency and clearly acknowledge the vacuum of social justice pervading all layers of society in the 21st century.

This reinvigoration of literally common sense results on the one hand from the advent of Barak Obama and his new leadership in the U.S. and on the other hand from a massive global financial and economic crisis that threatens the very foundations of global world order.

The president of the U.S. has demonstrated his desire for change in many ways but has he been effective and is change indeed coming to Washington, as he has promised many times? The global economic crisis has made regulation of financial markets and the financial industry as a whole a top priority. 

Today Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, UBS and others are equipped with an almost unmitigated license to gamble and at the same time fall into the category of too big to fail. This is not sustainable and even the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is now openly debating a breakup of these giant cathedrals of capitalism.

The Financial Stability Forum and its successor the Financial Stability Board (FSB) in Basel is working on new rules to give regulators more oversight in establishing important issues such as excessive leverage and forcing banks to provide for anti-cyclical periods with putting more money aside during boom times.

They are asking for an awful lot given the most recent history of the industry but nobody disagrees bold action is necessary because of the magnitude of the current crisis. At the eve of the London summit Nikolas Sarkozy threatened world leaders to quit the talks if president Obama and chancellor Gordon Brown would resist tough regulation.

They did not and so in the end it provoked Mr. Sarkozy to say that the page of the Anglo-Saxon model of free markets had been turned. German chancellor Angela Merkel called it a victory for common sense and Nobel Laureate and economist Stiglitz hailed it a historic moment for the world to admit the push for deregulation was wrong.

The joint communiqué of the London summit included a statement acknowledging major failures in regulation being the cause of the market turmoil. To avoid another crisis hedge funds, credit rating agencies, risk taking and executive pay are subject to stricter regulation in the future.

Just how much more regulation and who those regulators will be nobody knows at this point. It is hard to fathom that a bunch of bureaucrats will be able to reign in Wall Street executives and their armada of lobbyists swarming the hallways of congress. For regulators to push the breaks when everybody else wants to accelerate seems too much to ask, in particular given the history of failed regulations in the past.

A contentious issue in this whole regulation debate is the use of credit derivatives and their contribution to the current crisis. At a recent congressional hearing on a proposal to regulate over-the-counter derivatives congressman Sherman asked Treasury secretary Geithner: “Can you correct that misconception and make a clear statement now that derivatives that are sold today are not going to be the subject of bailouts for either the issuer or the purchaser?”

The secretary even after being asked several times refused to give an answer (the full transcript of the conversation can be seen here, video in video-center). Mr. Geithner’s refusal to cooperate highlights the difficulty of the enormous task that lies ahead.

On the one hand is the commitment to put on the breaks with tougher regulations for the sake of the sustainability of the system. On the other hand are all the safeguards put into place to make sure that this ambitious goal will not kill the golden goose. It is therefore no surprise that credit derivatives experience sort of a revival in the midst of a still slumping economy, mass layoffs and record taxpayer funded economic stimulus programs.

The president of France, Brazil and other nations are talking tough on regulation but in the meantime BAB is back on Wall Street. Today Goldman Sachs released the results for second quarter earnings and revealed that bonuses are indeed back. Goldman compensation may very well reach a record $1 million per employee this year.

For the second quarter the bank set aside a staggering $226,156 for every employee working for the firm. A couple of months ago with Wall Street and the World at the precipice of catastrophe, Goldman received a $10 billion bailout in taxpayer money.

It is no surprise Wall Street has a very short memory but this development gives me indeed little hope that regulation is being seriously considered in the hallways of power on Wall Street and in Washington. Just how much change will we get in the end? Probably not enough!

Paraguay defender Paulo Da Silva is close to becoming manager Steve Bruce’s first new signing at Sunderland

The 29-year-old will leave Deportivo Toluca after failing to agree a new deal with the club.

Toluca have confirmed that a Premier League clubs is interested in signing the defender.

“The English team’s offer was not within our reach,” read a Toluca club statement.

“First of all I want to thank the Deportivo Toluca for the effort they made and for giving me the opportunity to fulfil a dream, which is playing in Europe, it is certainly an important step in my football career,” Da Silva told Toulca’s official website.

Dos años después de la Libertadores obtenida por Colo – Colo en 1991, otro equipo chileno estuvo cerca de repetir la hazaña. La Universidad Católica dirigida por Ignacio Prieto.

A fines de Febrero y en Calama debuta la Universidad Católica en el grupo que integraba Cobreloa y Bolivar junto a San José, ambos de Bolivia. En un grupo muy cerrado, Católica gana el grupo con 8 puntos, seguido de Bolivar y Cobreloa con 7.

En Octavos de Final, le toca medirse con el Atlético Nacional de Colombia, al cual vence por diferencia de goles (2-0 de local y 1-2 de visita). En la fase siguiente, se impone claramente al Barcelona de Ecuador, al vencerlo en los 2 partidos que midieron fuerzas.

Pero es en los partidos jugados en Semifinales donde la Universidad Católica escribe una de sus páginas más gloriosas. El rival de turno era el siempre complicado América de Cali de Colombia (tres veces finalista y con Rincón, De Ávila y Lozano en su plantel) al cual vence muy ajustadamente el 5 de Mayo en Santiago 1-0. El partido de regreso jugado una semana después, tuvo de todo. Fútbol, emoción, situaciones infartantes, vértigo y un final incierto hasta el último minuto y fue considerado uno de los mejores juegos disputados en aquella Libertadores.
