When Daemon came to visit this last time, he asked me a lot of hard questions that I was positively not expecting, nor ready to answer.

On our way home we had a bit of a discussion about his future as it ties into my own. As you should know so far, he lives in another state, roughly 12 hours driving time away. After coming home from his being in another country for 3 years, he eventually needed to find a job. I have a feeling it was never a thought that he’d meet someone off the forum we both frequent, let alone where I’m from. The more I’m around him the more attracted I become to him. (This is a rare-ish event for me. I tend to become overwhelmed or annoyed with people when learning a little too much about them or being in close proximity with them for any given length of time beyond the social norm of hanging out.) I hope he feels the same, but I tend not to know how he feels about things unless he has a beef with something. Most people have no problem expressing their frustrations at a situation but tend to take a more liberal route when it comes to expressing otherwise (at least that’s what I’ve come to find.) But I do know he cares enough for me that he’s trying to plan his next move based on me (sort of).

On our drive home he asked if we could talk about the future. I agreed it was necessary and the debate began. It went something along the lines of deciding if the relationship was worth one of us relocating to be near the other, and who should do so based on who had the strongest reasons for their stance. I expressed to him that I wanted to remain where I was. I have my family here that mean more to me than anything. I have a steady job with insurance with plans to go back to college to either complete my degree or grab another one. His reasoning was that there are no job opportunities where I live as the economy is PARTICULARLY awful here. He craves the culture of the city and didn’t believe he’d find it here. He expressed also being close to his family and wanting to be near his home base for support just as I did. I can’t particularly say why, but the conversation COMPLETELY upset me. The thought of leaving my family behind left a sick feeling in my stomach. My head entered mule-mode and became blocked and stubborn to the idea. Daemon is very much a problem solver and likes to talk through situations. I couldn’t handle it anymore and a small tiff broke out. He was angry with me for wanting to stop because he felt I was disregarding his feelings in needing to talk about it. I felt he was disregarding mine in not wanting to. Silence ensued for a good portion of the ride back home until he broke it and apologized for what he said. Afterwards I felt I had been far too immature and couldn’t even muster the words to express similar sentiments. (Later I did…or at least I think I did. The longer the car ride carried out, the more exhausted I became.)

I don’t recall ever coming to any conclusions. We’ve actually had civilized discussions after that night, but it still hasn’t been resolved. He needs to decide within the next month what his plans are.

If I have to be completely honest, I’m also afraid to leave. I’m afraid that I don’t know him well enough to make such a major decision that will affect my life in so many ways. I’m afraid that he’ll decide it’s best that we separate a few months down the road after being around be for a lengthy bit of time and I will have done all for nought. I’ve never done anything like this before ever, nor have I even considered it. I’m not sure he realizes what a big step this is for me, even just CONSIDERING it. Or perhaps I don’t give him enough credit and he can see more than I can in this situation. I don’t know. And as of late I’m feeling like there is a LOT I don’t know. It’s exciting…but so scary. After he left this time I missed him terribly. I wanted to tell him, but I simply settled for, “I missed you.” I hate to be the one who feels a certain way and the feeling isn’t returned. That is to say, I think at this early point in our relationship, I feel more strongly for him than he for me. It jars you and makes you feel out of place. (And by you I mean me.) I know what I want though. I want to be near him and just enjoy his company. I want to feel safe in my decision. I wish I could communicate this to him rather than here to those it doesn’t matter with.

Und das Abenteuer geht weiter! Zunächst steht Will vor der nahezu unlösbaren Aufgabe Lyra zu finden und aus den Fängen von Mrs. Coulter zu befreien. Wir lernen Engel und Mulefa kennen, von denen vor allem die Mulefa liebevoll ausgearbeitet und höchst interessant sind. Wir erfahren, was “präventive Absolution” bedeutet und welche Interessen die Kirche in dieser Geschichte verfolgt. Und natürlich begleiten wir Will und Lyra auf ihrem gefährlichen Weg durch die Welten zum Land der Toten. Zusammen mit Mary und ihrem Teleskop finden wir außerdem heraus, wie Staub aussieht und sich verhält.
Das Abenteuer läuft am Ende auf die von Lord Asriel geplante große Schlacht hinaus, deren Entwicklung überraschend und eher unerwartet verläuft…

Lyras Geschichte hat mich gefesselt und in ihren Bann gezogen und ich kann sie einfach nur jedem vorbehaltlos empfehlen. Dieses Buch ist wirklich der krönende Abschluss der Trilogie und ich denke, wer ein wenig zwischen den Zeilen liest, kann einige Dinge für sein eigenes Leben lernen…

Und denkt immer daran: Erzähle ihnen Geschichten.

Ob das mit der Expedition zu tun hat? Als es auch Lyras besten Freund trifft, macht sie sich selbst auf in den Norden. Sie findet tatsächlich die Brücke zwischen den Welten und wagt mutig den ersten Schritt …”

Ich konnte das Buch einfach nicht aus der Hand legen. Die Geschichte beginnt ganz plötzlich, der Leser wird direkt hineingeworfen und muss sich erst einmal zurechtfinden, während er Lyra bei ihrem Versuch, sich in den Ruheraum des Jordan College zu schleichen, beobachtet. Bis ich verstanden habe, was eigentlich die Dæmonen sind und was sie tun, hat es eine Weile gedauert, aber das stört das Leseverständnis nicht weiter. Die Idee hinter den Dæmonen, die einen Teil der Seele ihres Menschen verkörpern, gefällt mir sehr gut. Auch die Panzerbären finde ich sehr gelungen, im Gegensatz zu den Hexen, die auf mich eher desinteressiert, distanziert und ein wenig weltfremd wirken.

Aber worum geht es eigentlich?
Lyra gerät mitten in einen Vortrag ihres Onkels Asriel hinein, der Unterstützung für eine Expedition in den Norden sucht. Kurz darauf verschwinden immer wieder Kinder und gerade als Lyras bester Freund Roger ebenfalls verschwindet, lernt sie Mrs Coulter kennen. Diese geheimnisvolle Frau möchte Lyra zu ihrer Assistentin machen und anschließend mit in den Norden nehmen.
In der Hoffnung dort Roger zu finden und aus den Fängen der “Gobbler” befreien zu können, beschließt Lyra mit ihr zu gehen. Kurz vor ihrer Abreise erhält sie ein Lethiometer – einen Wahrheitsmesser. Und so stürzt Lyra sich in ein spannendes und gefährliches Abenteuer mit vielen Wendungen, voll Hoffnung und Geheimnissen, dessen atemberaubendes Finale sie und ihren Dæmon Pantalaimon sogar in eine andere Welt führt…

Just beautiful. This is a short story about the Jaenelle and Daemon faces after the end of Queen of Darkness. Just as gripping as the trilogy. Loved the party scene. Very clever. I actually laughed at some of the parts in this story. So it must have been good.

Daemon fears Jaenelle will never recover from sacrificing her Black Jewels to purge the realm of the corrupt Queens.

He desires nothing more than to heal her, body and soul – and to help her unravel the secret of Twilight’s Dawn, the Jewel Jaenelle now possesses…

Elizabeth Gilbert, author of “Eat, Pray, Love” recently went on TED, the excellent series of videos on “ideas worth spreading.” This wonderful video expresses the evolution and downfall of the idea of creativity and what Socrates called his “daemon”. I find her overview excellent, and a good reminder to all of us that our true genius is only a part of something larger than ourselves. She insists that we have lost our way in referring to persons as geniuses rather than understanding that we come from the One. Her argument is that the post-Renaissance humanistic viewpoint of homo sapiens at the center of the universe has essentially killed off our creative people, due to the stress of thinking we’re the total package and must rely upon no one but ourselves.

Daughter of the Blood by Anne Bishop (The Black Jewels Trilogy, Book 1)

I just loved this book. Can’t get enough fantasy and this one filled that gap nicely. This is the first book in the Black Jewels trilogy by Anne Bishop.

The book follows Janelle, the one that is dreams made flesh, the one to become the next living Witch. It follows her struggles as she discovers who is and her abilities. Then there are people out there who want to shape and create her for the own purposes. Thus begins the fight for who will eventually control Witch.

Seven hundred years ago, a Black Widow witch saw an ancient prophecy come to life in her web of dreams and visions. Now the Dark Kingdom readies itself for the arrival of its Queen, a Witch who will wield more power than even the High Lord of Hell himself. But she is still young, still open to influence-and corruption.

Whoever controls the Queen controls the darkness. Three men-sworn enemies-know this. And they know the power that hides behind the blue eyes of an innocent young girl. And so begins a ruthless game of politics and intrigue, magic and betrayal, where the weapons are hate and love-and the prize could be terrible beyond imagining…

No one ever told me adulthood is this difficult. I wish I had more bimbotic problems. Like boy problems or shoes crisis. And it isn’t fair there isn’t anyone to guide you with life problems. Everytime you chat with your friends or girlfriends, they pour out affairs of the heart to you. I hear sob stories everyday. Some almost interesting even. But what baffles me is nobody talk about life problems. I’m sure everyone has life problems, don’t they? So why isn’t anyone talking about them? So how is this supposed to be? Maybe one day when I’m sitting on some remote bench by a Hyde Park setting, an anonymous wise old man can come up to me and enlighten me.

I did analyse the situation. There are a few options. I can give up and go home. I can go home and prove Madame Rose right, and let poor piggy-cat down for never making it to Mars. Or I can go on. Go on and on without knowing what I’m fighting for. I feel a little tired and a little dejected. Leaves me somewhat helpless since I’m usually positive. How is this supposed to be? I tell myself if I keep staying positive, things will work out. I can’t even bear to say out loud, “I don’t know anymore.”

Mr. Jolly-O never takes me seriously. He lets me do whatever that pleases me because he thinks it’s just for fun. He never thought anything will come out of it. Madame Rose thinks I’m a rebel despite the fact I’ve done everything she asked me to for more than two decades until only now. And I get a little confused with the both of them, torn between the extreme opposites.

If only Lord Asriel and Marisa can try to understand Lyra a little more. One is never physically around, and one attempted to severe link between Lyra and her daemon wanting her to take form of something she never wanted. Lyra tried so hard to flee from Mrs Coulter and why would she want to go back now? Can she imagine life with Mrs Coulter again and living in the shadows of the controlling monkey daemon?

However brave Lyra is, she still got an ice bear. How can I go on.

Vilken power han har, Jonas Gardell!

Såg nyss “Debatt” på TV där första delen handlade om att Jonas Gardell blivit nekad att filma och kommentera inuti Peterskyrkan i Vatikanen.

Gardell håller på med en TV-serie som kommer att börja sändas i vår. “Åh, Herregud!” är namnet, och den ska handla om tro och vad jag förstår bygger den på hans båda böcker “Om Gud” och “Om Jesus”.

Ett av inslagen ska handla om just Peterskyrkan, och Gardell hade fått tillstånd att filma och allt var klart. Men plötsligt fick han veta att han inte var välkommen.

Och sen råder det delade meningar om orsaken. En del hävdar att det bara handlar om att man inte får filma och samtidigt kommentera inuti Peterskyrkan, en del hävdar att det är Gardell och hans kontroversiella uttalanden om Jesus som är orsaken.

Jag vet ju vad jag tror.

Handlar det bara om det förstnämnda, så går väl det att kringgå genom att lägga på speakertext i efterhand. Så troligast är väl att Gardell är obekväm som vågar ifrågasätta det vedertagna.

En av frågorna i boken “Om Jesus” är varför vår trosbekännelse hoppar över hela Jesu gärning.

“…Vi tror ock på Jesus Kristus,
hans enfödde Son, vår Herre,
vilken är avlad av den helige Ande,
född av jungfrun Maria,
pinad under Pontius Pilatus,
korsfäst, död och begraven…”

Men allt som Jesus GJORDE då? Varför nämner man inte det?

Jag tror på en Jesus som engagerade sig, som ville att vi skulle agera om vi kunde. Ta ställning, protestera, kämpa för rättvisa och framför allt vara kärleksfulla emot varandra.

“Is God a three letter word for love?” sjunger man i en vacker sång av Duke Ellington.

Ja så tror jag att det är. Gud är inget objekt, utan helt enkelt det som uppstår när vi öppnar våra hjärtan och sinnen och känner gemenskap med varandra och älskar och respekterar oss själva och hela skapelsen.

“Ubi Caritas et Amor, Deus ibi est” sjunger vi ibland. “Varhelst det finns omtanke och kärlek, där finns också Gud”.

Och om katolska kyrkan kan jag inte uttala mig så särskilt mycket egentligen, mer än att jag bevistat ett par mässor och slogs av att jag inte var välkommen att ta nattvarden. Denna är endast förbehållen “äkta” katoliker.

Undrar vad Jesus hade sagt om det.

I min protestantiska evangeliska kyrka så kommer både hinduer, buddhister, muslimer och kristna med glädje och tar del av brödet och vinet varje söndag. Man öppnar dörrar.

För som Mamadou Sene, en muslimsk artist och tillika bekant en gång sa; “Vi har alla samma mål, men olika vägar att nå dit”.

Jonas Gardell fick in en underbar replik i debatten i alla fall. “När påven Benedictus är död och blivit kanoniserad, då kommer säkert det här att jag blivit nekad att filma att framstå som hans enda mirakel!”.

The demons went eagerly to their assignments causing Christians everywhere to get busier and more rushed, going here and there.
Having little time for their God or their families.
Having no time to tell others about the power of Jesus to change lives.

I guess the question is, has the devil been successful in his schemes?

Earlier this year I read a novel that captivated and simultaneously scared the shit out of me. It didn’t scare me in a horror movie kind of way… It scared me in a “large portions of this could work” kind of way. The book was Daniel Suarez’s Daemon.

Daemon has it all, crime, technology, compelling characters, unexpected plot twists, and a brutal look at alternate applications of technology.

To add a spoilerish piece to the description I pulled from Amazon, Sobol’s Daemon works by spidering Internet news sites and looking for events. Once those events transpire, they trigger new ones. The first event was Sobol’s own death; his obituary was published. Then the Daemon murders a couple of people; stories of their deaths trigger more events, and so on. It makes insanely good sense.

One big plus of the book is that it explains a lot of the technology, so you don’t need to be too geeky to understand it.

Most of the technology in the book is incredibly grounded, while the story takes off in fanciful directions. All-in-all, a great and compelling read that I should have written about months ago.

Why did I spoil a portion of the early story?

Back when I read the book I subscribed to the Daemon Technology Feed on my Google Reader. The feed linked to interesting tech stories and other geeky things, then it went silent after February 25, 2009. For some reason I never unsubscribed, but yesterday, it started publishing new and cool things again.

I’m sure the Feed turned back on because the Daemon sequel, Freedom is hitting bookstore shelves on January 7, 2010… but after reading the book, I have to admit there was something mildly frightening about seeing it become active again.

Im zweiten Teil lernen wir Will kennen, der sich um seine kranke Mutter sorgt und seinen Vater nie gekannt hat. Als sie von Männern verfolgt werden, die etwas in ihrem Haus suchen, bringt Will seine Mutter in Sicherheit, findet den gesuchten Gegenstand und beschließt, seinen Vater zu suchen. Dabei gelangt er in eine andere Welt, in der er auch auf Lyra trifft. Die beiden freunden sich an und bestehen gemeinsam ein weiteres, spannendes Abenteuer, in dessen Verlauf Will auf das Magische Messer trifft…
Außerdem wird die Geschichte von Lee Scoresby erzählt, der alles tut, um Lyra zu helfen. Ebenso wie die Hexen, die diesmal besser in die Geschichte passen. Auch Mrs. Coulter taucht wieder auf, noch gerissener als zuvor…

Dieses Buch ist ebenso spannend geschrieben wie der erste Teil, dennoch wirkt es auf mich ein wenig “gezwungen” – als müsste einfach erzählt werden, was es mit dem Magischen Messer auf sich hat und die Geschichte drum herum wird nur nebenbei erzählt. Es läuft also alles auf den dritten Band hinaus, auf den großen Krieg, in dem über die Zukunft aller Welten entschieden wird.
