18 of the 32 Conservative frontbenchers would benefit from their own Inheritance Tax cut - truly representative of Britain...

It may not come as a shock to many to discover that the Conservative front bench will, on the whole, benefit from the cut in Inheritance Tax, but the fact that they will benefit to the potential tune of £7 Million will.

According to today’s Daily Mirror calculations, ‘Mr Cameron and shadow chancellor George Osborne are among nine top Tories whose families stand to gain the maximum £520,000 from the change, because their wealth is estimated at more than £2 million.

George Osborne’s plan to cut Inheritance Tax to help the wealthiest people in Britain is a sign that if the Tories get back in to power they will not, as they claim, ‘be in it together’ with the rest of us.  They, and their rich chums, will give themselves such a large financial boost that they won’t need the outside jobs they have at the moment.

Mr Osborne has claimed that the cuts will benefit people who live in former council houses, and once again the Tories are proven to be completely out of touch with reality.

Today (technically, yesterday) I ran into www.FTOpinion.com, which seems to have been set up by Wijeya Newspapers Ltd, the publisher of The Daily Mirror and it’s Financial Times supplement. They’re on a mission of their own to gather public opinion about FT going solo as an independent standalone newspaper, rather than playing baggage to the Daily Mirror itself.

To me, it seemed very Interesting to note that the publisher has utilised, or at least shown some interest in leveraging social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter (@ftsrilanka) and a web-based forum to achieve its objective.

In short, they seem to be showing some serious consideration to social media, which is relatively new among the critical mass in this part of the world. I think it’d be fair to assume FT to be among the first major Sri Lankan brands to embrace social media in a fairly serious manner. This is in no way to say that consumers in Sri Lanka are new to the concepts of SM. In fact, they’ve done it pretty well, despite the lack of business/commercial push, that is until now. FT just seems to be among the first few to tap into this potential gold mine of opinions.. Which makes me wonder how many more businesses or brands will now follow suite…

It would be interesting to watch how FT’s efforts materialize into conversations and ultimately a follower-base for the brand. Most importantly, I’d love to see how they would apply the feedback they receive towards their product.. (which is ultimately what a brand leveraging SM would be expected to do, right?)

And the star who has spoken about shunning drugs  was so out of it he let a girl scrawl all over his face with a pen.
Guest Wadia Tazi, 26, also at the London party, said: He looked spaced out and didnt look like he knew what was going on.

The party-loving Harry Potter idol, a spliff between his fingers, could barely stop chuckling as the girl daubed his face at the house bash.

Fellow reveller Wadia Tazi, 26, said: “-Daniel was laughing and seemed to find it funny. But he didnt really look like he knew what was going on.“

The screen idol, 20, earlier lit up the joint in front of guests and repeatedly took deep drags. He also walked around the flat blurting out: -I love weed!
Wadia said: -I was surprised by his behaviour.

Just last year the s30million actor insisted: -Ive been around some amazing people and still managed to keep a real childlike view of the world. Im not into drugs.
The get-together, at a high-rise in Camden, North London, was thrown by a friend of his on-off actress girlfriend Laura OToole.

Wadia and one of his pals arrived at around 1am to find just eight guests as festivities wound down. He said Daniel already seemed in high spirits but keen that the newcomers did not twig who he was.

Wadia said: -Most of the beer had already gone and people were tucking into pizzas.
Daniel looked spaced out and away with the fairies. He didnt want us to recognise him. When I said he looked like that actor in Lord of the Rings [Elijah Wood], he got a bit funny and said, No, thats not me. He looked pretty uncomfortable.
I didnt recognise him as he looked so different to what I expected from the films. When my friend told me who he was, I was shocked.

Within minutes of arriving at the do, Wadia, his pal and the star were alone in the kitchen  and Daniel began puffing on a joint.
Wadia said: He was really friendly and talking about his dad a bit.

Then he pulled out a huge joint and lit up. Daniel said he loved it. He seemed happy that neither of us knew who he was.

At one point a girl dragged him away, saying, -Come on Daniel, follow me. You dont trust me, do you?
She pulled him into the toilet and started drawing a huge comedy beard on his face.

The mood almost turned sour when a man called Sam believed to be the stars minder  and Laura confronted Wadia over footage they believed he had shot on his phone. They found none.

Wadia said: Laura was very protective. She said Daniel had a reputation to protect and couldnt ruin it. I presume she meant by being seen smoking. I said I didnt know what she was talking about.
But almost immediately afterwards she and Daniel left.

Last year Daniel  now filming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I revealed that this years Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince contained subtle drug references.
He said: There are a few drug metaphors in the film. I think any film marketed in the main for children still has humour that works on one level for them and on another level for adults.

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe yesterday denied smoking cannabis, insisting the cigarette he was photographed inhaling was a roll-up.
The actor was filming the final two-part episode of the movie franchise but a spokesman declared: “Daniel does smoke the occasional roll-up cigarette but he was not doing anything more than this.”
The statement follows our pictures At yesterday of the actor drawing deeply from a hand-rolled cigarette at a house party in North London.
Fellow party-goer Wadia Tazi overheard the British star telling guests: “I love weed.”
During the evening, Daniel produced the rolled-up cigarette from his pocket and sparked up before taking several deep drags in front of other guests.
Last night internet fansites and forums were deluged with fans questioning the 20-year-old’s antics.
While many were shocked by the Mirror’s photos – in which Daniel was also seen giggling as a female friend scribbled a comedy beard on to his face – hundreds leapt to the star’s defence. One warned: “If he loves weed let’s hope it loves him back and he doesn’t end up with drug-induced psychosis.“
Another fan said: “Stronger forms of cannabis like skunk ARE more dangerous for you but the odd spliff in moderation won’t kill anyone. When someone becomes addicted to taking cannabis it’s another thing altogether – because it’s not good to be addicted to anything.“
One said: “I‘m sure he has sex, drinks alcohol and a number of other things that don’t really fit with the Harry Potter image! Acting is just that – acting. It’s unfair of us to expect him to actually be Harry Potter!”
Sophie, from Portsmouth, claimed: “I‘ve never met a 20-year-old boy who hasn’t smoked marijuana.”
Katherine Watt, from Peterborough, posted: “Good on him. At least he isn’t stumbling out of a club drunk and starting fights!”
Another fan wrote: “At the end of the day he is a normal young lad. He cannot be knocked for doing what just about every other lad his age does or has at least tried. Let him live or he’ll end up messed up like Britney Spears was.”
Spencer from Surrey said: “He enjoyed a joint – good on him.“
But Tigs, from Watford, added: “I’m more disappointed that he started smoking cigarettes in the first place!“

It’s hardly up there with Amy Winehouse smoking crack while Pete Doherty and Kate Moss lick cocaine off her ever-pert boobs (note to lawyers: this is an imaginary scenario) but we suppose some people who’ve led very sheltered lives will be quite shocked that Daniel Radcliffe has been photographed allegedly smoking a spliff at a party.
The pictures splashed across today’s Daily Mirror show the Harry Potter star (there are so many “pot” jokes here that we can’t even be bothered to make them) smoking what’s known in the business as “a suspicious cigarette” while a friend draws a comedy moustache (all moustaches are fairly funny, though) on his laughing face at a house party in Camden.
“He looked spaced out and didn’t look like he knew what was going on,” says someone called Wadia Tazi, who’s kindly flogged the story. “I was surprised by his behaviour.”
Us too. Does anyone else now find Daniel Radcliffe mildly more interesting?

Om det nu till äventyrs skulle finnas någon bland mina besökare som inte läser engelska flytande och/eller tycker att det åtminstone är jobbigt att göra det, så följer här en kort sammanfattning på svenska…

Den 20-årige brittiske skådespelaren Daniel Radcliffe, känd som huvudrollsinnehavare i Harry Potter-filmerna, var alltså på party i Londonstadsdelen Camden härom dagen. När han trodde sig vara icke-igenkänd, dristade han sig till att inför publik fiska upp och tända en marijuanajoint (s k spliff) och gick därefter omkring bland festdeltagarna och deklarerade att han älskade gräs, d v s marijuana. Han lät sig också förskönas (?) av en flicka på festen, som ritade mustascher på honom. Han var dessutom på ett strålande humör och skrattade mycket, vilket är en vanlig reaktion hos de cannabisrökare som inte är alltför välbekanta med drogen. På svenska kallas fenomenet vanligen för skrattnoja.

Vid ett tillfälle blev emellertid hans sällskap misstänksamma och krävde att få se en mobiltelefon, utrustad med kamera som en av gästerna hade. De föreföll oroliga för att någon skulle ha tagit bilder som kunde skada Daniels anseende, vilket uppenbarligen också stämde. Emellertid saknades komprometterande bilder i den specifika kameramobil som undersöktes. Dock lämnade Daniel och kompani festen kort efter detta intermezzo.

När nyheten publicerades med suddiga bilder av den påstått marijuanarökande Radcliffe i tabloiden Daily Mirror, förnekade Radcliffe att han skulle ha rökt cannabis. -Det var bara en vanlig, hemrullad cigarett, sa han. Jag feströker ibland.

Radcliffelägret förnekar alltså kategoriskt att det skulle ha varit frågan om inmundigande av cannabis och dess juridiska ombud har antytt att de kan tänkas öppna en process mot spridaren av detta rykte, d v s skvallertidningen Daily Mirror.

P S Det är tydligen så, att vissa av Harry Potter-skådisarna delar huvudrollsinnehavarens kärlek till hampan… 
Personligen tycker jag att det är jobbigt med beskäftiga pekpinnar, som i det här fallet från Posh, typ: -Fy skäms på dig!,
även om de ska förefalla skämtsamma…
Dessutom har man tydligen inte på “Sveriges största kändissajt” lärt sig stava till cannabis…!

He said,“Your yes don’t mean much until you’ve learned to say no.’’ I suddenly realized that it isn’t the number of things I say yes to that’s important,but what I say no to.

For each man should carry his own load(Gal.6:5Niv) Lord,guide me in knowing when to say yes and when to say no.

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the Harry Potter films denied newspaper allegations this morning that he was photographed smoking cannabis.

Radcliffe denies drug use

Radcliffe, 20, denies the claims after the Daily Mirror published photos believed to be of the star, smoking cannabis taken by a fellow reveller at a London party.

“Daniel does smoke the occasional roll-up cigarette, but he was not doing anything more than this,” said a spokeswoman for the 20-year-old actor.

Radcliffe is currently filming the last two parts of the Harry Potter series.

The Many Faces of Humility

 I don’t want to walk with the proud. But neither do I want to be counted among the humble. Humility has P. R. problems. Pride has done a good job ruining the reputation of its rival. Many of us cannot even think of humility without suspecting pride in disguise, or an unhealthy and self-defeating personality. Part of the problem seems to be that humility acts a lot like pride. Both show up at the same parties.Both have a closet full of disguises.

Both try to avoid detection. What is different, however, are their motives.While pride hides to avoid guilt and conviction, “H” stays in the background because of its concern for the joys and pains of others. With these differing motives in view, see if you recognize the following tactics and strategies of the “H” factor. Leading humility—While known for producing followers, the “H” factor can also produce leaders. Caring about the needs of others can be a strong motivation for taking the risks of leadership. Hating humility—While having a reputation for genuine love, humility also knows how to hate anything that threatens the well-being of others. Speaking humility—Sometimes seen as shy, humility will speak up quickly and loudly, even at its own expense, when it sees the interests of others at stake.

Defending humility—Often known for “turning the other cheek” in response to insults, humility can use physical force against an enemy if the situation calls for personal or national self-defense. Receiving humility—Known for giving sacrificially to meet the needs of others, humility also knows when to gratefully receive help and kindness.

Laughing humility—While humility knows when to cry, it spends a good deal of its time laughing with the joys of others and enjoying the favor of God. Urgent humility—More often than not, the “H” factor practices patience so as not to force its will on others. But sometimes, when conditions call for it, humility runs to the side of those who need help. Well-groomed humility—Humility has made a name for itself by knowing when to rip its clothes and wear the look of dustcloth and ashes. But more often than not, the “H” factor hides behind “normalcy” to avoid advertising its presence.

Discontented humility—Most people see humility as willing to be satisfied with what it has been given. But nothing is as dissatisfied as the “H” factor when it sees the needs of others being ignored. Nondeferring humility—Known for taking insults rather than repaying evil for evil, humility also knows when to stand up to threats if it is in the interests of others to do so. Unforgiving humility—Humility has a deserved reputation for giving to others out of the forgiveness that it has received. But the “H” factor also knows how to lovingly hold feet to the fire when there is a lack of repentance.

Questioning humility—In noted cases, the “H” factor does what it is told without asking questions. But it is not too proud to ask for clarification—or even for justification—when the needs of others seem to be at risk. Skeptical humility—Humility knows when to give others the benefit of the doubt. But on important occasions it knows when to lovingly and courageously disbelieve what it is hearing. Noncompliant humility—The “H” factor has a reputation for being cooperative.

But there are times when humility scorns the kind of pride that would comply with evil rather than risk the disapproval of others. Self-protective humility—Although humility doesn’t protect itself at the expense of others, it does know when to look after its own interests to avoid becoming burned out and useless to others. Self-helping humility—While self-help can be an arrogant way of rejecting the help of God and others, humility also knows when to educate and improve itself for the good of others. Successful humility—While the “H” factor doesn’t seek honor or success to put itself in the spotlight, humility is comfortable with recognition that is good for the general welfare.

 Attention-seeking humility—Humility doesn’t call attention to itself for its own sake. But it knows when to pick up a towel, wash the feet of others, and say “follow my example.” Attention-seeking humility —Humility doesn’t call attention to itself for its own sake. But it knows when to pick up a towel, wash the feet of others, and say “follow my example.” Knowledge-seeking humility—While knowledge can give big heads to those who amass it (1 Corinthians 8:1), humility knows how to lovingly seek out information and truth for the sake of others. When we genuinely care for the needs of others in the Spirit of Christ, pride is displaced by humility. There is no better description of humility than that described by the apostle Paul. While pointing his readers to the example of Christ, he wrote, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others. Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus . . .” (Philippians 2:3-5).

Father, forgive us for being so disinterested in the attitude that brought Your Son from heaven to earth. We know You resist the proud and give grace to the humble. But we so easily revert to our own instincts. Please help us to love the kind of humility You love. Please enable us to adopt the kind of attitude that will help us to care for those who have an eternal place in Your heart.

One of our candidates had cut and pasted his own face onto Mark Oaten's - The Daily Mirror came on the phone!

As a press officer you sometimes get calls that need immediate and urgent action. I was in someone else’s office when a call came through saying that I urgently needed to speak to Mark Oaten, the MP for Winchester.

It was apparently an issue about some photographs that were going to be published in The Mirror the next day, and I needed to give them a comment, as Mark was very keen to say nothing himself.

It transpired that a Liberal Democrat council candidate, in my region, had been a little bit over-enthusiastic with Photoshop and messed around with a photograph of Mark.

The photograph, of Mark Oaten, the winner of the Winchester By-election, arriving in Parliament, with leader Paddy Ashdown and all the other Lib Dem MPs was quite well known, and available.

To improve his electoral chances the Lib Dem candidate had super-imposed his own face on that of Mark Oaten’s body and passed it off, on his leaflets, as if it was genuine.

This, as you can imagine, was quite a tricky situation, and one that Mark was keen for an apparatchik, like me, to deal with.

The Daily Mirror came on the phone, ‘so John what do you make of this fraud, perpetrated by your candidate?’

After a moment’s pause, ‘Well, I think it’s very important that all candidates keep their heads during this election campaign!’

So happy was the journalist with his quote, that I merited the description, ‘Wag, John Ault,’ in his piece!

X Factor judge Cheryl Cole spent £65,000 on her live solo performance on the show, a report has claimed.

Sources told a tabloid newspaper that the Girls Aloud star had “splashed out” on the debut performance of her hit song `Fight For This Love’.

Cheryl allegedly decided to spend the money on additional dancers, costumes and special effects for the performance.

The investment seems to have been a smart move, as the single and album ‘3 Words’ have gone to the top of the charts.

An X Factor insider told the Daily Mirror that it was common practice for the guest acts to pay for additional dancers and lightining.

The source explained: “The performers have to pay their own production costs and it can be a small fortune.”

The insider claimed that the live performances by former winner Alexandra Burke and Whitney Houston also cost around £60,000.

Rock band Bon Jovi are believed to have staged the cheapest performance of the current series. Their performance during Rock Week last Sunday allegedly cost just £30,000.

Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:18-19). The ministry of reconciliation is a ministry that is given to every Christian. Once we have been reconciled to God through the cross, it is our basic calling to help reconcile others to Him. The primary way that we do this is through the proof of a life that is reconciled to God. Just what does such a life look like? The first thing that was lost by the Fall of man was his relationship with God. Therefore, the first thing that should be restored by redemption is our relationship with God. The Lord created man for fellowship, and our primary purpose is to fellowship with Him.

If there was a way to measure the degree to which redemption has worked in our lives, it would be by how close our relationship is with God. If we walk with God, we will become like Him, as we are told in II Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with an unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. We cannot walk with God without beholding His glory.

If we behold His glory we will be transformed into His same image. We can therefore ask ourselves: Are we becoming more Christ-like? Are we growing in the fruit of the Spirit? Are we growing in the gifts of the Spirit? All the gifts are aspects of Him. Is this transformation noticeable to others? If so, they too will be compelled to be reconciled to God. When Jesus is lifted up, all men will be drawn to Him. If they are not being drawn to Him through us then we have somehow departed from the course.

This drawing to the Lord can be for Christians as well as non-Christians. There are many who have “come to Jesus” but all that they ever received was a religion. The Lord did not save us so that we could become members of a church. That is one of the benefits, and true church life should be one of the most fulfilling things that we can do on this earth, but we must have a greater vision than that. We do not serve God by serving the church, we serve God as members of the church. There is a difference.

If we try to serve God by serving the church, it becomes an end in itself. As the Shulamite maid said to her beloved in the Song of Solomon 1:7: “Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, where do you pasture your flock, where do you make it lie down at noon? For why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions?” When we are only content to be in someone else=s flock, instead of developing our own relationships with Him, we veil ourselves.

Then we will not be changed into His image, but rather someone else=s. This is why we are told that we must behold the Lord “with an unveiled face” (see II Corinthians 3:18) in order to be changed into His image. There are many veils Christians can put on that distort His image causing them to be changed into a distorted image of Him. One of those veils can be the church itself. We cannot be content to have a relationship with the Lord through anyone else, or through the church. The Lord does not have any grandchildren. We are all first generation sons and daughters to Him.

Ministers are friends of the Bridegroom who are called to help prepare the bride for Him. When there is a spiritual intimacy between the Lord and His church, she will bear fruit and souls will be born into the kingdom. How would you feel if all of your children looked like your best friend? Why is it that so many Christians are conformed to the image of their church, denomination, or movement, rather than into the image of Christ Himself? It is because they are more focused on these than on Him. They are being changed into the image of what they are beholding. When the church becomes what she is called to be, there will be nothing we want to do more in this world than go to church meetings.

This is because we will be coming together to serve the Lord, and to behold His glory. There is no one in the universe more interesting than God. Just as the highest calling of the priesthood in the Old Testament was to minister to the Lord, the highest calling that we can have is to minister to Him. Ministry to the people was a secondary calling. It is still important, but not as important as the ministry to the Lord. If we do not draw near to Him we will be little more than a form of religion to minister to people. Our goal should be to stay so close to Him that His glory is reflected from us like it was Moses.

People knew when Moses had been with the Lord. Do they know when we have been with Him? It should be said of us as it was the Lord=s first century disciples in Acts 4:13: Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John, and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were marveling, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. When we have been with Jesus we too will cause men to marvel. When the church again gives her highest devotion to drawing near to the Lord, she will be changed into His image, and the whole world will marvel.

Pure in Heart

The purity that Jesus referred to is so much more than a mere outward show of religiosity. For purity to exist, it must flow from our innermost being and command the very core of our personality.When we have a pure heart, living our lives in a way pleasing to the Father becomes our central concern.Kathryn Kuhlman once shared that she often said in prayer, “Lord, if there is anything in me You don’t want, just take it out and kill it.”That’s really what it is to be pure in heart: a passion to be pure before the Lord and live a holy life.

We hunger for holiness when we say, “Lead me closer to you, Lord.” This passion for purity is really a manifestation of gratitude to God.

Rumour has it that the BBC is chasing a rather high-profile guest star for the upcoming series of Doctor Who.

Said star is none other than ‘Girls Aloud’ singer and X-Factor Judge Cheryl Cole, according to British tabloid The Daily Mirror.

Says the paper; “No deal has been signed, but show executives think Cheryl, 26, could play a big part in their new series.” They then quote an unnamed insider who claims; “If she can find the time, a part will be written for her.”

The BBC has refused to confirm speculation.

Cheryl’s got her knockers, but we’re big fans at IGN.
We’d treat this gossip with a grain of salt to be honest, as the Brit tabs have been known to invent the odd tall tale occasionally, but you never know.

There will be three special episodes of Who this winter, before the new series kicks-off proper in Spring 2010.

X Factor judge Cheryl Cole is being wooed by BBC bosses to star in Doctor Who, it has been revealed.

The Daily Mirror reported that show executives were prepared to tailor make a role especially for her in the new series.

An insider said: “If she can find the time, a part will be written for her.”

No deal has been signed and sources at The X Factor claim they will will fight any bids to lure her away.

Cheryl, 26, scored a double whammy this week when her first solo album, 3 Words, entered the charts at No 1 on Sunday, while her debut song, Fight For This Love, remained at the top of the singles chart for the second week running.

Or, cet article (que vous pouvez lire ici) explique au contraire qu’après s’être consacrée pendant de longs mois à sa famille, la belle Jennifer est de retour sur les écrans. Jennifer Connelly indique certes à la fin de l’article qu’après ce tournage, elle n’a pas de « plans précis » pour le futur et donne la priorité à son mari et ses enfants. Mais elle ne mentionne nulle part la perspective d’un arrêt durable de sa carrière.

Cheryl Cole and Dannii Minogue were reportedly given a telling off by Simon Cowell on Sunday – for trying to turn The X Factor into a “fashion show”.

According to an on-set insider, the music mogul has had enough of the female judges’ obsession with how they look – and would rather they focused their attention on the task at hand – rather than clothes and make-up.

“After the show he summoned all the judges to his dressing room, and let rip at Cheryl and Dannii for spending more time preparing their outfits than their remarks for the show,” the source told the Daily Mirror.

“Dannii and Cheryl are always immaculately turned out and spend ages choosing their clothes and accessories, having their hair and make-up done and generally perfecting their ‘look’.

So what do Mirror Journalist Ryan Parry and Conrad Murray have in common?

1. Abused the trust of people who trusted them

2. Both played away from home leaving an (un)born child fatherless.

The indications are that  Ryan Parry has gone one step further and specifically tried to add insult to injury to ruin Blanket Jackson’s life and intrude on his privacy.

Not content in the knowledge that Blanket’s mother was a surrogate called Helena Martinez, he has tried to track her down to throw her in the media spolight (and no doubt ruin her life).

Also I have been given a name by someone very close to Michael and have also had it confirmed by a doctor in San Diego who treated her, so I’d be interested to at least have a conversation about where you got your name from and how confident you are about this woman, I’m sure you don’t want to look foolish in front of the world’s press.

It could be that one of us has an alias that this woman may have used during surrogacy.

Nannette, it is kind of baffling me exactly what it is you are doing…if you’re not interested in the money then what on earth are you going to gain by suddenly releasing such information publicly. If anything the public will hate you for doing so.

Carers save the nation £87 Billion per year - we should show them the respect they deserve

£53.10 per week is what a carer gets paid by the state for the full-time work they do for the member (or members) of their family they are looking after.

This, based on a full-time equivalent, means they get £1.52 per hour. If they are in receipt of the state pension, £95.25 (for a single person), or are a student, or have an outside income over £95/week they don’t qualify at all for the carer’s allowance.

With an ageing population we need to be more and more aware of the work that carers do which actually saves the country money. 

Carers UK, the charity that champions the cause of the UKs 6 million carers, has estimated that the work carers do in their own homes would cost the nation £87 Billion/year, if the state had to provide it.  If the carer was unable to provide the care, through whatever reason, this is what would have to happen.

I, for one, could not survive on this paltry amount and feel; although its relatively recent introduction is a welcome lifeline to carers, it really is a benefit that ought to fairly represent the work and commitment that carers give.

Some people tell me that this is just looking after their family and that carers should do it for nothing. However, if I found myself in the position of having to care for a close family member, ignoring the issue of whether I could actually cope with it or not, I would have to abandon my career, and my pay, to care.  As a consequence I would lose my own future to care. The commitment is intellectual, emotional as well as financial.

The next election will increasingly be fought in the environment of social care being a key election battleground.  Liberal Democrats need to make sure that they put their ideas about, and support for, carers at the centre of their manifesto to improve the lives of this often forgotten group in society.

That’s why I will be helping to organise a Carers Rights Day event in my area later in the year others should too.

(I was delighted to see that the Daily Mirror is running a campaign to raise the profile of the work of carers.)

The Daily Mirror is today launching a new “Caring For Carer’s” campaign to highlight the disgraceful situation regarding the level of benefits for people who care for disabled relatives and friends.

At the moment, Carer’s Allowance is just over £53 a week, no matter how many people you care for. Both my sons qualify for Disability Living Allowance for their ASD and so I am entitled to receive this paltry amount. But, should I be lucky enough to be able to find a part-time job that I can do while they are at school, I cannot earn more than £95 a week net or I lose the benefit.

Before I had children I could earn up to £200 a day. I had intended to go back to work after they were born, but because of their disabilities, I was not able to leave them in the care of anyone else. To do so would have meant finding a specialist nanny, the cost of which for two children would have wiped out my earnings. Added to this, the fact that a journalist’s life is shift-working and the situation would have been untenable.

When my sons were in mainstream school they would sometimes refuse to go because of the stresses they faced in that environment, meaning I would have to have them at home all day. What kind of employer could put up with a worker needing great chunks of time off? My youngest needed one-to-one swimming lessons as he could not cope in a group and this was expensive (and every child should learn how to swim if they are able). I also helped out in school several times a week because I felt so guilty that they were difficult to cope with.

Now, despite the fact they are both at a specialist school, I am still unable to get a full-time job because of the long holidays they have. I cannot leave them in a holiday scheme because they would find it distressing which would have a knock on effect for their lives and ours as a whole. So, we must rely on my husband’s income (and he was out of work for six months this year), our boys’ DLA and my princely sum of £53.10 Carer’s Allowance. We live in Surrey, an expensive part of the country, because it is near to their school. We are only glad that their fees are now paid by the LEA or we would have to sell our house and seriously downsize to afford the cost. Before the LEA agreed to take responsibility for the fees, all the DLA and Carer’s Allowance went towards making a small dent in the special school fees. Even now, it still disappears into the great well of  things they require for school and to support their special needs.

But still, I would say that we are lucky because we have at least one decent income (that my husband has to travel three hours a day to earn). What if something happened to him (God forbid)? Then I would have to care for all three of them on £53.10 a week. This is the situation for many carers today. Many face huge debts as well as the stress of caring for someone who is sick or disabled or the headache of making ends meet on a pittance.

An immediate Government review of carers’ benefits and the Carer’s Allowance to be increased.

More respite breaks and health checks for carers.

Carer’s Leave to be made into law so carers can ask employers for discretionary time off work.
