If you didn’t hear, bestselling author and 2012 presidential hopeful, Sarah Palin has not ruled out Mr. Beck as a running mate.  Hear how Jon Stewart vets Beck’s running mate’s strengths and weaknesses.

My morning routine (when I don’t have class) is pretty set: I wake up early-ish, make some tea, read some local, regional, provincial and national news online, map out my day and maybe do some writing, then take a break at 9 a.m. to catch the previous night’s episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. I used to watch it for a good laugh. Now I watch it as a valuable source for media education.

The Daily Show is an award-winning satirical newscast that pokes fun at the media texts and messages prevalent in the mainstream news media. The show prides itself on being accurate with its facts and holding journalists accountable for what they put out to their audiences. In a sense, the show has become a watchdog for the journalism industry, even though the industry should be watchdogging itself: (Taken from the aforelinked Poynter.org article)

While its touts itself as a comedy show first and foremost, “The Daily Show” is also an unabashed media critic and ombudsman of sorts that exposes journalists’  wrongdoings and shortcomings.

“I feel like there are lot of critics of the government but there are very few critics of the media who have an audience and are credible and keep a watch on things,” said “Daily Show” writer Elliott Kalan. “That’s a role that we provide that we take very seriously.”

At the same time that “The Daily Show” is critiquing the media,it’s also establishing itself as a “trusted” news source, even though it doesn’t refer to itself as one.

One of the show’s rules is to not trust any source too much until it’s been confirmed by another source. The show’s 11 writers and eight producers — who range in age from their early 20s to mid 40s and four of whom are women — say they often check The New York Times and other newspapers to verify the facts and figures they hear on TV or read about on blogs. They also have a researcher and fact-checker, Adam Chodikoff, who makes sure any information that’s used has been verified by multiple sources.

“We work very hard to make sure that we don’t take anything out of context,” King explained, “just because we like to think at the end of the day that what we’re doing is right and correct, but also because while the networks don’t respond to us all that much, people attack us and criticize us and we don’t want to give them ammunition than they need.”

For anyone watching the show, what you encounter is a understanding of how young people are becoming media literate and critical thinkers about the media messages they encounter. There is an understanding of how messages are constructed and what influences the messages reaching the audience. The use of comedy gives Daily Show viewers a means through which to gain the tools necessary to critically analyze the media information provided to them. In a sense, the Daily Show can be seen as a vehicle to reach one of the ideals of media literacy: creating an engaged audience — an engaged citizen — that is able to critically analyze media texts and create a dialogue with media.

That became apparent the other week when The Daily Show picked up on Fox News’ use of month-old footage of Glenn Beck’s 9.12 Project rally as part of a package on a health care bill rally on the steps of Congress. On Nov. 10, the Daily Show aired footage of the initial screw-up and then aired the response on Nov. 12. What is interesting in the response, and the Daily Show didn’t miss it, is that host Sean Hannity acknowledged the mistake and apologized to the Daily Show. The point wasn’t to apologize to the Daily Show, but to the audience who viewed the inaccurate footage and created a false interpretation within the message.

If anything, what the whole episode did was reinforce a negative perspective on media and a hardening of the protectionist approach to media education. Frankly, for putting false information on-air, I can’t think of a good argument against that media education teaching approach. But what I can argue is this: there is a place for critically analyzing the news media and the messages from politicians. If anything, the Daily Show and its sister show the Colbert Report should be essential viewing for secondary school and post-secondary students studying media.

And as a going away present, Jon Stewart’s legendary segment on the now-defunct television show Crossfire. But don’t just passively watch this clip and laugh… think about what Stewart is actually saying and whether anything has changed in the years since his appearance on the show.

Last week, Jon Stewart and The Daily Show caught out Fox News’s Sean Hannity running old footage of September Tea Party crowds in an attempt to make Michele Bachmann’s smaller November Tea Party shindig appear to be more well-attended than it was.

Is Fox up to the same tricks again?

Last week, Fox News’ Sean Hannity was caught with his pants down after Jon Stewart pointed out he had falsely used footage of crowds from a September “Tea Party” to make a recent GOP “Tea Party” seem larger. While Hannity made an on-air apology for the “mix-up,” Fox apparently doesn’t feel that ashamed, because, well, they did it again. With the same footage. To make Sarah Palin’s “book”-signing look well attended.

I swear I could probably set my watch by how many times a year Joe Biden makes an @ss of himself…

WASHINGTON (CNN) – It could be an historic day for Vice President Joe Biden.

Biden heads to New York City late Tuesday afternoon and will appear on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” That’s nothing new for Biden, who’s appeared on the program as a guest five times over the past few years.

But this will be Biden’s first time on the show since his inauguration as vice president in January. And apparently it will be the first time any sitting vice president will appear as a guest on the program.

ในบ้านก้อมี พ่อ แม่ ไท๊ บุ๊ง แมวเปอเซียชื่อพุซซี่แคท กะหมาชื่อโอลดี้ พุซซี่อ่ะชอบเข้ามาห้องนอนบุ๊ง แล้วแบบ บุ๊งไม่ชอบแมว T^T  ส่วนโอลดี้นี่น่ารักมั่กๆๆ ปกติหลังกินข้าวเยนทั้งบ้านก้อจาอยุ่กันที่แฟมิลี่รูม พ่อกะแม่จานั่งดูทีวี ไท๊นี่ก้อแทบไม่มีการบ้านเลย ไม่เล่นคอมด้วย แล้วก้อไม่ติดทีวี เด็กดีสุดๆอะ ตอนพ่อกะแม่ดูทีวี บุ๊งกะไท๊ก้อจานั่งต่อโมเดลบ้าน ไม่ก้อลงไปเล่นเปียโนกะเกมเพลย์กันข้างล่าง  หน้าต่างห้องบุ๊งมองไปเหนทะเลด้วยแหละ สวยมากๆ เพราะบ้านโฮสบุ๊งอยุ่บนเขา : )

ครอบครัวเราก้ออยุ่กันอย่างสงบสุขเรื่อยมา.. จนกระทั่งวันหนึ่ง.. พ่อชวนเพื่อนมาแทงพูลกันที่บ้าน เค้าจัยดีมากเลยแหละ ไปเล่นเซิฟกะบุ๊งด้วย แต่ตอนนี้จำชื่อเค้าไม่ได้ละ แหะๆ ทุกคนก้อเลยไปอยุ่ในห้องพูลค้าบ แล้วก้อปิดประตู เปิดเพลง(แน่นอนว่าเปนเพลงของเเบล็กอายพี) เปิดเบียกินกัน แล้วทีนี้บุ๊งก้อมาอาบน้ำก่อน (ไท๊เปนฝรั่งที่อาบน้ำเช้า-เย็นแบบสอาดสุดๆ บุ๊งเลยต้องอาบด้วยเลย ไม่งั้นไม่อาบหรอก๕๕ แล้วเค้าก้อประมานว่าให้บุ๊งอาบก่อนทุกครั้งด้วยแหละ) ทีนี้บุ๊งพอบุ๊งอาบน้ำเสด มันก้อเกิดแอ๊คซิเดนขึ้นคับ คือประตูห้องน้ำมันเปิดไม่ออก!  เหมือนตัวล็อคมันค้างหรืออะรัยปะมานนั้นอ่ะ แล้วบุ๊งก้อพยายามนานมาก จนไอตัวล็อกมันหลุดคามือออกมา O_O บุ๊งก้อรีบยัดมันกลับไปเพื่อความเนียน แล้วตะโกนเรียกแม่ ก้อไม่มีเสียงตอบรับ ตะโกนเรียกพ่อ ก้อไม่มีเสียงตอบรับเว่ย ตะโกนเรียกไท๊ ก้อยังไม่มีเสียงตอบรับเว่ย เรียกพุซซี่ พุซซี่ก้อไม่มาอ่ะ เพราะทุกคนอยุ่ในห้องที่ดังสนั่นไปด้วยซีดีของแม่นั่นเอง T_T

บุ๊งก้อพยายามต่อไป ก้อไม่สำเร็จ บุ๊งเลยนั่งรอ ๆๆๆๆๆ ก้อยังไม่ได้ยินเสียงคนเดินออกมาง่ะ แล้วก้อรอๆๆๆๆๆ ๆๆๆๆๆๆ ๆๆๆๆๆๆๆๆ ไม่รุ้ว่านานแค่ไหนอ่ะ เพราะบุ๊งไม่มีนาฬิกา จนเบื่อมากๆแล้วแบบนั่งเฉยๆมันเซงอะ บุ๊งเลยลองใหม่ คราวนี้บุ๊งเขย่าแบบกะเอาให้หลุดคามือเลย แล้วไท๊ก้อมาแล้วครับบบบบบ ในที่สุด T^T  แต่ไท๊ก้อเปิดประตูจากข้างนอกไม่ได้อะ เลยไปตามพ่อ ทีนี้ทุกคนก้อมารุมอยุ่ที่หน้าประตู แบบแม่บุ๊งเค้าตื่นเต้นมาก ถามบุ๊งตลอดเลยว่าเปนรัยมั้ยๆๆๆ ไรงี้ แล้วประตูมันก้อเปิดไม่ได้อยุ่ดี เลยต้องตามช่างมา ระหว่างรอช่างไท๊ก้อออกไปข้างบ้าน ปีนเก้าอี้มาโผล่หน้าตรงช่องหน้าต่างห้องน้ำอ่ะ อยุ่คุยเปนเพื่อนบุ๊งไรงี้ จนช่างมา ช่างเค้าบอกว่าต้องใช้เวลานานหน่อยเพราะมันค้างอะรัยงี้อ่ะ แม่บุ๊งเลยบอกให้ทุบประตูทิ้งเลย! แถมประตูนี่ติดกระจกบานเท่าตัวประตูด้วย เศษกระจกก้อกระจายเตมพื้น เพื่อช่วยบุ๊งออกมา!  

 ในที่สุดบุ๊งก้อได้ออกมาจากห้องน้ำ แม่เค้าก้อยังตื่นเต้นไม่หายเว้ย เค้าก้อถามบุ๊งใหย่เลยว่ากลัวมั้ยๆๆ ไรงี้ บุ๊งก้อบอกเค้าว่าไม่เลยๆ แค่เบื่อเฉยๆ จิงๆนะ จะกลัวทำไม – - แม่เค้ารุสึกผิดที่บุ๊งเปนเกสต์ แล้วต้องมาเจออะรัยแบบนี้อ่ะ แล้วเค้าก้อเอาไปเล่าทั้งโรงเรียนเลย  LOL
