As this year’s Noble peace prize was given for showing hope, let me follow up on how this hope gets materialize. (http://face4.wordpress.com/2009/10/09/peace/)

Last week Noble peace prize winner Obama oops President Obama had a great opportunity to showcase his commitments for which he was awarded the Noble peace prize. I personally, was expecting to see concrete progress in three areas

1. Dealing with two previous Noble peace prize winners

a) Aung San Suu Kyi

There was no mention about her in the official statements. But Officials mention that Obama has taken up this issue with Burmese officials.

b) Dalai Lama

Obama’s office mentions that it was not the right time for him to receive Dalai Lama but will receive him later

2. Relationship with China

As mentioned in some sectors of the press, even though Obama acted more like a reckless spender paying visit to his banker, being a Noble peace prize winner, he could have been more upright on Human rights issues, censorship, state of North Korean asylum seekers in China or other things that United States of America stands! for. Overall I think, he did a decent job here!

3. Initiates to contain Climate change

A token initiative to set up a research center….

This weekend’s dharma talk by Jack Kornfield titled, “Respect and the Dalai Lama”

This weekend’s dharma talk by Jack Kornfield titled, “Respect and the Dalai Lama” really jiggled my heart strings, as the Truth often does.

One story in particular that Kornfield shares…

A woman who had been in prison for killing her husband was telling the Dalai Lama about the violence she and so many other women in prison endured before they ever considered committing a crime. Abuse, rape, trauma. She felt he needed to know what these women had been through, what led them to where they were. Upon hearing this, the Dalai Lama began to weep.

As I was listening to the talk… in my kitchen, making butternut squash soup… and Kornfield is finishes the story, “Upon hearing this, he began to weep,” I felt almost shocked, like, electrically. Stunned into feeling, heart split open in compassion. Instantly, my eyes welled. Time stopped for a moment. I could imagine what it would be like to feel, to touch, so sensitively, the pain of another person, the pain of the world.

Reflecting on this later, it dawned on me how much protection there is over my “heart”… my feeling heart. How insensitive I can be sometimes.

I have to say, I consider myself extremely sensitive. (Some have said “overly” sensitive.) It hurts so badly to pass a cattle truck, it’s almost unbearable. In that moment I do feel connected to the bigger hurt of the world. The geese, for God’s sake. I mean, I’m a sensitive gal.

And still, today I got that in many ways I am protected and guarded and keeping pain at arms distance.

This is the practice: To be with What Is… without grabbing on, without pushing away.

To let the heart open to the pain and joy of life.

I don’t know if I know how to do this without being overwhelmed.

“No matter how long our life is, there is a limit to it, is there not? When we think about the formation of this universe, the lifetime of a human is very short and there is no guarantee that we can live out even a normal human lifespan. Under these circumstances it is senseless to concentrate all of one’s energy on accumulating money and property. Since it is clear that wealth is helpful only for this life, it is appropriate to reduce extreme greed…Also, it is clear from the current world situation that no amount of material progress can fulfill what beings are seeking.” The Meaning of Life, H.H.

The above video clip helps to illustrate this point made in the new book A Great Deception by the Western Shugden Society.

The Tibetan government is the Dalai Lama, and the Dalai Lama is the Tibetan government. Behind the trappings of government with its illusion of democracy, the Dalai Lama’s position, with its central tenet, ‘L’etat, c’est moi’ (‘I am the State’), extends its domain of authority over all aspects of policy and decision-making. There is no decision of government that is not the Dalai Lama’s decision.

Descrito simplesmente como “Quite possibly the funkiest supergroup of all time.

I’ve never had habits. They don’t stick with me. It’s great in terms of negative habits, because I don’t get addicted. But a routine – i.e. a series of positive habits – would help get the work done, and establishing one is my current challenge. I can fall in step with mass routines, where a group of people do the same thing at the same time, but sticking to one on my own is difficult. Over whiskey I had a brilliant insight (humour me) – feeling frustrated I told my sister what my ideal day looks like, and she observed that I already have access to everything I need. I could in fact choose to live my ideal life immediately. It’s shocking what we don’t do even if we could. (Supposedly if you trap a fly in a jar and then leave the jar wide open, it still won’t escape.) The brilliant plan looked like this:

(The “@ DESK” is to ensure that I don’t kid myself that Starbucks entails working. The “WORKING 4 MONEY” refers to the fact that I’m always researching something which won’t pay off until 2012.)

That night I set my alarm for 6.30am. By 6.50, only 5 minutes later than planned, I was on the meditation cushion and stayed there for an hour. After that I was *knackered* and decided to sleep through breakfast. I’d been so tragically excited about the plan that I’d barely slept. I got work done eventually, and the gym, but subsequently felt so high on having done so many great things, and was so knocked out from a lack of sleep, that I was out of it for 2 days.

The next day I decided to run the scheduled hours, but only once I’d gotten enough sleep. The trouble is, I managed to put that off by reading until 3am every night. Every day brought a new book.

I think it’s about energy management. Learning how your mind ebbs and flows, what it needs to sustain itself, in terms of physical sustenance, creativity, contact, solitude, rest, stimulation, comfort and exposure in equal measure. Squaring this with your absolute objectives, and endeavouring to provide those things in a rhythm that will work. It only took one hour of distraction, and my whole day would be off-kilter. Discipline (like marriage, apparently) is nothing but a long series of choosing to commit afresh, minute-by-minute.

When you trek in the jungle it takes days of hard slog just to clear a short path, and it frequently seems like you haven’t gotten anywhere. But once you’ve done it, every time you or anyone else walks it, it gets easier. Brain paths are the same. You can burn yourself out, phase into a fog or commit to providing a constant delicate balance.

Multimedia artist Laurie Anderson writes a funny true story here about the Dalai Lama, cappuccinos and harnessing the mind. Thanks to poet Kevin Griffin Moreno for sending me one of the best books of poetry ever, “What Book!?” (Parallax Press 1998).

To trackback with all the controlled uneasiness, at least, till now: bunch of CEOs and business barons hijacked the Indian public discourse on strategic affairs vis-à-vis China. With all the alleged authority they [used to] tell us: China and India can be robust partners and collaborators [fair enough in roughly economic terms]. This thinking particularly has had tremendous influence on strategic foreign affairs (in Indian public discourse). Thus: disco-dancing for the tune “Chindia, Chindia, Oh! Chindia”. Of course, China and India are collaborators and partners in many aspects; at the same time, what’s missing is: we also compete and at times confront China. To make all of it worse, in India: the underfunded, understaffed think-tanks hardly offer comprehensive and cutting-edge research, opinions, perspectives, policy suggestions on Indo-Sino relations. Sadly, we are only passionate about funding, celebrating, installing – technology and business management schools; not social sciences, particularly political science and international affairs. Within social sciences, India has fair amount of reputed economists [very often trained outside India!]; but similar expertise in political science and strategic affairs? Very very few.

Now, “one tight slap” on all such alleged disco-dancing intellectuals who have bought into these business leaders’ arguments [Slapper = China; Slapee = you know who]. For China says: the Indian state Arunachal Pradesh is China. Well, no matter how compulsively ironic: thank you China. Only now, there is, hopefully, a positive picking-up-momentum in public discourse in India about the “Chinese grand design” or its “new forward policy”; i.e as Brahma Chellaney writes – 1 & 2 – “According to Indian defence officials, there were 270 line-of-control (India-China border) violations by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and 2,285 instances of ‘aggressive border patrolling’ by it last year alone. Other border incidents also are being reported, such as the PLA demolition of some unmanned Indian forward posts at the Tibet-Bhutan-Sikkim trijunction and Chinese attempts to encroach on Indian-held land in Ladakh”; and, also particularly using the Indian state Arunachal Pradesh “that China claims largely as its own on the basis of putative historical ties with Tibet”. This claim was demolished by His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama who said that the Indian state Arunachal Pradesh throughout its history was never part of Tibet, which is why Arunachal Pradesh “was not included in Tibet in a 1914 agreement that demarcated the borders between the then-independent Tibet and British-ruled India” (see Chellaney 2009).

At least now, I hope, these Indian business leaders would refrain from mouthing statements that are essentially related to strategic affairs.

“Interestingly”, the current Chinese design is ominously similar to pre-1962 trap where there was considerable amount of “Hindi-Chini bhai bhai” (India-China brotherhood) syndrome that was immediately followed by a war.

Right now: of course, not war; but, at least geopolitical design of the Chinese should be clear enough by now, I think.

This is just a quick reminder that UWest’s Religion & Film Series will continue tomorrow with a screening of master filmmaker Werner Herzog’s 2003 documentary Wheel of Time. The legendary, iconoclastic Herzog is perhaps best known for his films Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn, Encounters at the End of the World (last year’s Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature), Fitzcarraldo, The White Diamond, Nosferatu the Vampyre, and Aguirre, the Wrath of God. The film is described this way by the All Movie Guide:

Celebrated filmmaker Werner Herzog turns his attention to one of the largest Buddhist gatherings in the world in this documentary. Thousands of Buddhist pilgrims travel to the village of Bodh Gaya in India (the place where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment) to take part in the Kalachakra Initiation. As the visitors stream into Bodh Gaya, many traveling on foot and often stopping to prostrate themselves as a sign of devotion, a team of monks create a beautiful and intricate sand painting on Mount Kailash, which is scattered to the winds by the Dalai Lama at the end of the 12-day celebration as a symbol of the impermanence of existence. Herzog documents the ancient rituals of this ceremony as well as profiling the Dalai Lama and some of the many Buddhists who travel to India for this event.

I’m personally quite fond of this film, and even named it one of my “Five Great Films about Buddhism” for elephant journal.

A funny clip of Herzog talking to His Holiness the Dalai Lama is embedded below.

The screening starts at 7 p.m. in Room ED309. It is free and open to the public. A discussion will follow. We hope to see you there!

As I ride the bike and review my day I realize I truly love what I do for a living! I relish the opportunity to stand before a room of young adults and share my knowledge and experience and get paid for it! However, the evaluation and testing of students is less enjoyable but necessary. Yet from the student responses and ratings, they appear to enjoy my classes!

Genuine teacher: Dalai Lama

Am I a good professor because the students like me and the majority of them learn the material? I would argue that makes me an “adequate” instructor. When I recall the professors I had in my undergraduate training only three stand out: an Economics professor, a Psychology professor, and a Chemistry professor. But was it their knowledge in the field that made them a favorite of the students? No, it was that they brought the subject matter to life! The classes they taught were an experience!

How many twenty year olds, caught between parties, social life and football, would have imagined that Economics was such an integral part of life? Those who took Dr. Barton’s Economics class did! Who would have imagined the vast role Chemistry played in life or the psychological motives that underlie all behaviors. Haven’t we all taken classes where we studied the material, did a memory dump on the test, took our grade and then never thought about the subject again! Good instructors brought the topic to life, making it real with poignant examples and stories. They might have even raised their voices, waving arms as they pounded on the podium.

Genuine teacher: Mother Teresa

Good professors don’t just make a point, they plant seeds! They open you up to new possibilities and to a new world view. I’ve had students tell me that a particular lecture, or story immediately changed their perception of life. I’ve had many call me back years after they have moved on with life, to tell me that the seeds I planted in my classes had sprouted and were now bearing fruit. These interactions are gratifying and reinforce me to keep planting those seeds.

How is all of this relevant to our daily spiritual journey? I encounter many people of different faiths and spiritual practices who desire to influence other individuals’ spiritual life. In some cases it’s a desire to see suffering relieved. In other cases it’s a desire to increase their flock with converts. Some do it because they are told by their faith. Many do it out of a fear for the salvation of others. I remember a time in the Navy when a neighbor returned to the dorm in the evening with a beaming smile. I asked him about it and he exclaimed: “Two and a half, two and a half souls I’ve saved!” I asked him the obvious question about the fraction of a soul. He noted that he and a fellow believer witnessed to a sailor who “gave himself to the Lord” so he figured they should each get half a soul credit!

Genuine teacher: Gandhi

I have found that if you want to be effective at influencing other people and have fun in the process of doing it, you need to be genuine and authentic! I often see my students looking back at me with that wide eyed expression associated with a “he is really into this stuff” mind set. At that moment I know I am “in my grove” and that I am planting the seeds of possibilities, of new horizons, of new ideas and experiences.

I remember sitting with a group of my church teens as we spoke with an orange robed, shaved head Buddhist nun. I felt that sense of congruence as she spoke her story and told “her truths.” These were not mere words, she lived them! None of us rushed out and converted to Buddhism, but we all knew we had been in the presence of a special human being. Words and sermons attract, but the power to influence comes out of actions. Of course I am not telling you anything new, anything you haven’t heard from the pulpit. Embrace the love of God, live the love, be an example of it!

Genuine teacher: Billy Graham

I have a friend who is very devout in her faith. She attended a church workshop about the qualities of a “true believer.” She noted to me that “you have all the qualities they talked about, but you aren’t a believer!” I smiled, nodded and then added: “I believe, just not in the same things you believe!”

Hoje quero falar sobre algo bem polêmico: Qual a melhor religião??? Minha opinião, defen

Olá! Hoje quero falar sobre algo bem polêmico:

Qual a melhor religião???

Minha opinião, defendida já a alguns anos: Nenhuma… Eu chego à Deus por mim mesmo… Ele me olha, me protege, me guia…

BRASIL INTELIGENTE

da nossa pátria amada, chamada Brasil!!!

In a move which can hardly be considered a suprise (Helen Clark also refused to meet with him) John

In a move which can hardly be considered a suprise (Helen Clark also refused to meet with him) John Key will not be meeting the Dalai Lama when he comes to Auckland next month.

New Zealand governments in recent times have been unwilling to risk any fall out with China which may affect our trade relations with them.

Surely this affects our strong identity as a country who is willing to stand up for human rights and our beliefs on an international stage (think back to our policy of not allowing nuclear ships into the country).

See full story on Stuff here

Prime Minister John Key has been accused of caving to pressure from China after saying he will not meet the Dalai Lama.

Mr Key denied China had leaned on him, but conceded its well-known disapproval of world leaders who meet the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader was a factor in his decision.

“I had some discussions with the Foreign Minister [Murray McCully] about it. I think we would understand the way the Chinese would deal with these things, but on the other side of the coin, that wasn’t the over-riding factor. There were a number of factors involved.”
