Você já ouviu falar do Dalai Lama? Um velhinho careca que é monge? rs Ele é muito mais que isso, é o representate do Budismo Tibetano, a 13ª encarnação do Bodhisattva da Compaixão, que decidiu não entrar no Nirvana para reencarnar e ensinar às pessoas como viver melhor, em paz.

Antes de falar do livro, deixo claro que fui batizada na religião Católica e fiz até a 1ª comunhão. Porém, conforme fui crescendo, perdi a crença na Igreja, nos padres.. e me vi meio ‘atéia’.. rs. Não é de hoje que me identifico com o budismo, que não crê em um Deus único, mas sim no desenvolvimento pessoal para que a mente atinja o ponto máximo da tranquilidade e da felicidade. E foi pensando nesses dois últimos pontos que aproveitei a oferta do Submarino, e comprei (junto com os 2 primeiros Harry Potter, que tinha lido mas não tinha em casa) A Arte da Felicidade – Um Manual para a Vida, por R$9,90!

O livro é escrito pelo psiquiatra norte-americano Howard C. Cutler, sobre as conversas que ele teve com o Dalai Lama. O diferente é que pelo psiquiatra não ser budista, ele tenta extrair do Dalai Lama como um ocidental comum pode aplicar os ensinamentos budistas no dia a dia, e a principal conclusão é: seja feliz e não se irrite com qualquer problema. Há muitas outras mensagens que podem te ajudar (ou não, como a parte que fala sobre amor-próprio, eu achei inútil. rs).

Estou aplicando as técnicas de manter a tranquilidade, de se colocar no lugar do outro e de sempre acreditar que todo ser humano é bom no metrô lotado de São Paulo! Antes chegava no trabalho e em casa estressada, porque saia empurrando qualquer um que me empurrasse também, hoje simplesmente ignoro e estou bem mais feliz assim!

O sucesso da promoção deve ter sido tão grande que o estoque do Submarino acabou (e da Americanas.com e da Saraiva.com também)!! Uma pena, se encontrar a ‘raridade’ em uma livraria próxima a você, não espere para comprar! Aposto que vai mudar sua vida! =)

The Dalai Lama, the great spiritual leader of millions of Tibetans, is visiting Washington for a week of meetings with Congressional leaders and other political movers and shakers. Those will not include Barack Obama and it is a deliberate snub.

It seems that President Obama feels that appeasing China in hopes of acquiring its cooperation in the Iran andNorth Korea problems is more important than meeting with the Dalai Lama, something that President Clinton and both Presidents Bush did without too much trouble. This seems to be a shift in attitude on the part of President Obama, who, as Senator Obama, urged a boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics to protest China’s human rights record.

Communist China invaded and conquered Tibet in 1950 and has ruled it ever since as a province. The Dalai Lama, then a young man, was forced to fleet and has lived in exile for nearly sixty years. China regards the Dalai Lama as illegitimate and a “separatist” for campaigning for human rights and independence for Tibet. China has waged a campaign to discourage world leaders from meeting with the Dalai Lama in an attempt to undercut his credibility.

By caving into China’s demands, President Obama once again sends a signal of weakness and an almost obsessive desire to please enemies while snubbing friends. This is not just an immoral strategy, but a counterproductive one. If a tyranny such as China gets the idea that an American President will dance to its tune, it will push that advantage to the limit and beyond. Eventually President Obama must tell the Chinese no. It should have been with the Dalai Lama and not, as it will likely be now, something with a high profile and weightier stakes.

President Obama’s snubbing of the Dalai Lama is also politically stupid. If there is one thing that the Hollywood Left and conservatives agree upon is that Chinese rule in Tibet is oppressive and evil. Barack Obama may believe that he can annoy Richard Gere, himself a Buddhist who once famously urged the audience at the Academy Awards to send good vibes to facilitate the liberation of Tibet, and he could be right. On the other hand the spectacle of an American President eager to meet with the likes of Hugo Chavez and Ahmadinejad, but who hides from the Dalai :Lama is not very edifying. It suggests a man who does not realize that one is judged by the company one keeps.

Be careful when you read the next breaking news headline. The above quotes were written after the Vancouver Peace Summit in Sep 2009. It was disappointing for me to read these reviews, as I had missed the live stream and was hoping to learn about the outcome.

I couldn’t imagine that out of all the messages given by the monks, nobel laureates, authors, and CEO’s; this was the headline broadcast to our public.

Just off the top of my head, I can already think of a couple messages that might have more accurately summed up the panel discussion.

Such as: to be compassionate, we need to realize that the ME is also the WE, since we all directly affect each other in this global climate. So therefooore, none of our conflicts would exist if we thought of our neighbours as ourselves. or, as the expression goes, to put ourselves in the other person’s shoes.

Another message, a more truthful summary of the discussion on technology, is that technology is like a hammer; it can create or it can destroy depending on how it is used.  It seems a bit more productive than simply saying that the Dalai Lama thinks technology is a threat.

On the idea of the mind or ego. It is obvious that many of us suffer as a result of a dysfunctional mind and its beliefs.  There have been statements, from Eckhart Tolle for example, that we must “turn off” our minds in certain situations.  However, another perspective given is: the mind is an instrument that can be used to create something beautiful if we are taught how to use it properly.

Anyway, these headlines were a very useful reminder to use discretion when reading headlines on ANY subject. It’s our responsibility to dig deeper into these news stories, and to find the truth and opportunity in the situation.

Sooo therefooooore…

There is profound change on the horizon sweeping quickly towards us.  Just look at the upcoming Vancouver Peace Summit as an example: http://dalailamacenter.org/conference/vancouver-peace-summit-2009.

Is there really?  Will the cynics ever truly believe in the power of love and compassion?  Do you really think it’s possible?

I don’t imagine these are in fact productive questions to be asking.  There is no longer any more need for lectures and literature, as it’s clear that all the world’s religions have exhausted these means.

No, it is indeed a time for action; personal acts of love towards all other beings.  Not just towards those who belong to our family or friends.  Global compassion.

So how does this apply to my life?  How can I make a firm commitment to a life of compassion?  How can I apply the ideals of love and compassion towards all my actions?

PRACTICE. PRACTICE. PRACTICE.

It takes practice before anything can ever become routine and second-nature, especially when one has been trained and conditioned for their whole lives to behave in the opposite manner.  And in doing so, we must forgive ourselves for all our mistakes along the way, and simply try to learn from them each time.

Practice love. Practice compassion. Practice forgiveness.
