Okay, sportsfans, Check it out. If you’re just seeing this, you’ve probably come from one of the outlets that me and the boys from MMA 3:15 use to keep in touch with all you crazies. If you’re coming from our website, it’s not up yet, so you’re from the future and I salute you for that. Now, if you’re here from facebook, you’re here from facebook. Congrats. If you’re here from myspace, I’d call you dumb, but that’s just about the only place to hear our show right now. But that’s okay! Here you are! Well, now that you’re here,… how was your day? Everything alright? That bitch at work still spreading lies about you? She’s just jealous. I want to tell you a little about us and what we do. Myself, Mike Kelly, his brother Elliott, and Bruchie work on a little internet radio show called MMA3:15. If you haven’t listened yet, you’ll find that we’re real guys, just fortunate enough to have the necessary resources to produce our own brand of radio show. We just have fun and like you to think of us as your friends getting together, having some drinks, and talking about our favorite sport, Mixed Martial Arts. If you find yourself talking with us as you listen or watch the show, it’s okay. You’re not weird, it just kinda happens that way. I find myself doing it a little bit. That’s the point. If you live in a small area where MMA isn’t big yet, we’re just a couple clicks away. Think of it as an endless roundtable where you can chat with us about all the goings-on in the MMA world, only we won’t actually be joining the conversation, as we’re probably passed-out or working or something at the time. Opera opera opera.

What do I know about opera? The singer Dame Nellie Melba not only had a peach based dessert named after her, but also swore blind that the secret to maintaining her famous voice was the performance of regular and enthusiastic fellatio.

Here endeth the lesson.

Having just glanced over the relevant Wikipedia page, I think I’ll save the next phase of my quest to Pygmalion myself in the world of opera for when I’m back in London, and when a copy of ‘Opera for Dummies’ (with accompanying CD) will be happily at my disposal.

I’m sure this is how Mozart started out.

Oh yes! I’ve seen Amadeus. That counts for something?

Hm, and then there’s the whole Freddie Mercury / Montserrat Caballe thing…

No matter; it’ll come (especially if Dame Nellie’s involved… nudge nudge wink wink).

My knowledge of opera really is shamefully shallow. Disgracefully so. My experience of opera singers on the other hand… well, of them I can tell you that:

a) they tend not to get very enthusiastic about fight choreography.

and

b) they make actors look stable, reliable and down to Earth by comparison. No mean feat.

They tend to be fairly easy on the eye too (that or morbidly obese).

Am I giving them a bad press? This is generalizing of course… there are absolutely wonderful opera singers out there, ones who aren’t flakey or damaged or ego driven, and I’m sure there are plain ones, and perhaps even dull ones – I just haven’t met many.

Intensity is the order of the day generally. Though is that not true of all in The Arts? At least to some degree. We all have our stereotypes to contend with, and generally there’s a sliver of truth somewhere in them (whether this be chicken or egg is another matter of course; do we perhaps gravitate intentionally towards a stereotype, turn ourselves into what we think is appropriate to help attain internal legitimacy? Well? Do we?).

Opera itself is defined by extremes; of emotion, of tension, of characters, of plot – it only makes sense that those who devote themselves to it, spend their life saturating in the scores and librettos, would come to reflect and to inhabit some of that intensity.

They’re a tad nuts too. That’s an element of it I think.

How much are we defined by what we do? More than a lot of people like to believe. The vast majority of our lives are spent working – if you seriously think the environment, pastime and discipline that you spend most of your life focusing on and indulging in does not significantly affect how you develop or who you are… well I think you’re being a tad naive.

Of course it isn’t just our jobs that define us – hobbies, interests, friends… all these play their part; the degree of each depends on how much thought, time and action gets devoted and where. This said, invariably most of the friends will be colleagues, most of the hobbies, most of the interests, they’ll play second fiddle to work – both in time spent and focus given.

I’m not sure why people don’t like this. I mean, if your focus and and attention is primarily based around something other than work, well then I guess that defines you more… but for how many is that true? Especially after the initial year or two. If you don’t like the idea of being defined by your job… well perhaps you should get a new job? Like it or lump it we ARE defined by our work. We get one life to life (debatable, but this isn’t the arena) and what’s the point in devoting most of it to something you don’t even like to be associated with?

But pah; my thoughts are muddled, my mind tired. I must rest. These topics I’ll gestate upon, and perhaps revisit.

What many people (including me) said would happen, did yesterday.

Cincinatti coach Brian Kelly was named the new Notre Dame head coach.  He made the announcement to his team during a private banquet.

He has said that he will not be coaching the Bearcats in the Sugar Bowl, against Florida.

Many Cincinatti players are upset over the decision.  Many claimed that Kelly said he was staying at Cincinatti, and they felt like there was a great deal of lying in the whole situation.  We will have to see what becomes of that whole situation.

Kelly has been very successful in his coaching career, most notably with an undefeated regular season this year.  The unbeaten record earned the Bearcats the BCS bowl bid.  He is known for bringing programs from mediocrity to greatness, which is what Notre Dame needs right now.

"I’m the football coach at Notre Dame! I can openly be as pompous, condescending and arrogant as I want!" - Ex-Cincinnati, new Notre Dame Coach Brian Kelly

Does it seem a little peculiar for a coach to lead his team to arguably the second most important bowl game in college football, yet notify his players and staff during a team banquet that he is abandoning them?

Congratulations and salutations to ex-Cincinnati Bearcat and new Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly. But why wouldn’t he wait until after the season to take the Irish college football coaching job?

“It’s all about the money! Woooooooo,” Kelly said calmly. “I mean, it’s about coaching… Oh who the hell am I kidding? I’m the football coach at Notre Dame! I can openly be as pompous, condescending and arrogant as I want!”

Some of the Bearcat players did not take the news as well.

“Haha. Very funny,” Cincinnati wide receiver Mardy Gilyard said. “No one would be that ignorant and leave an undefeated team to coach a team that underperforms more and more every year.”

The Cincinnati Bearcats are 12-0 and playing in the Orange Bowl against the 12-0 Florida Gators.

The Notre Dame Irish are 6-6 and have lost four straight games. Their last win came over Washington State, whose only win this season was against Southern Methodist in overtime.

“Apparently, you have to win a championship to scream, ‘I’m going to Disneyland!’” Kelly said. “Well, with all the money I’m getting from Notre Dame, forget about just going to Disneyland, I may as well just buy the freakin’ place.”

Irish players were excited for Kelly to join the team in its quest for the offseason.

“Are we going to a bowl game?” Golden Tate asked. “No. Did we have a winning record? No. Did we finally beat a bad USC team? No. Did we beat Michigan, who lost seven of its last eight games? No. Have we won a bowl game this decade? No… It’s really too bad that I’m leaving for the NFL because the only direction our team is heading is up!”

It was inevitable. Everyone and their brother knew Charlie Weis was going to be let go. It wasn’t a matter of if but when, and that day has officially come. Notre Dame tells Weis to not let the door hit him on the ass on the way out.

Now, normally it would rub me the wrong way for a guy like Charlie Weis to be fired. A guy with some pretty achievement on his resume upon arrival in South Bend. Most notably, a couple Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots. But, he had more than a full recruiting cycle to show what he had as a collegiate head coach, and that’s is a fair amount of time for a head coach to implement a system and recruit players to fit it.

Weis’ 2009 Fighting Irish squad were cardiac kids to start the season. They started out the year just barely keeping their heads above water, sqeaking out wins at home against a garbage Washington team, a garbage Purdue team and a mediocre Michigan State team. Needless to say, it’s been just a rough year at the Golden Dome. And especially after a bad four game slide to end the year, with losses to Navy and Pitt that are always on the Notre Dame radar to start the year, the alumni are not going to be happy and you’re not going to have a job much longer.

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick said during the press conference that they haven’t contacted any replacements. You have to figure that guys like Cincinnati’s Brian Kelly and maybe Stanford’s Jim Harbaugh are under consideration. I’m not so sure I’d be doing jumping jacks over getting that job. All that pressure? Not for this guy.

Whoever comes in, I hope they can return Notre Dame back to what they were back in the early years of my existence.

In other news, Jay-z sat down with Women’s Wear Daily and discussed the Rocawear brand as well as his ex-partner Dame Dash.

Dame did a great job when he was here,” Carter said. “I just feel that I have a different way of running things, which I think is working out well. I let people make mistakes, and push them to be creative. I let a design team design. When they feel good about something they have created, it makes them want to do more. It makes them want to do their best. People are happy here. I’m not a controlling manager and I have a great team that makes me confident that things can run well when I’m on the road, and I’m proud of that. ”

Interesting bit: I heard Rocawear was a zoo when Dame was in charge. Women had to hide their purses while at work among other things.  Jay also revealed his biggest mistake at Rocawear to date.

We really should have done some Rihanna Rocawear umbrellas when that song became a hit. We could have made a load of money on those. I’m still kicking myself.”

Nun, meine >These< beläuft sich einfach nur in einer Handlungsempfehlung: Die Zeit, welche eine durchschnittliche Dame täglich mit Kosmetik verbringt, sollte ebenfalls ein durchschittlicher Herr mit sportlicher Aktivität verbringen. Das wäre nicht nur gesund und lebensfördernd (Stichwort: Sport als alternative Medizin), sondern würde auch dem gleichen Ziel entsprechen.

Naja, jeder kann ja mit diesem Hinweis machen, wass er will. Der Gedanke ist mir jedenfalls vor einigen Monaten mal gekommen. Daher dachte ich, dass ich ihn auch mal aufschreiben könnte…

In grootsteden moet men zelfs als klant in vele restaurants,  in bioscopen, in stations en andere openbare plaatsen betalen aan de wc-dame om eens naar het toilet te gaan. Gelukkig loopt het nog niet zo vlot in Hasselt.

De plaatsen waar we moeten betalen voor een wc-bezoekje zijn hier nog beperkt. Waar we zeker een retributie in het potje van de wc-madam moeten werpen – zover we weten – is in de Kinepolis, in de Ethias Arena en Grenslandhallen, in de Versuz en in de 2 Lunch Gardens van de Carrefour.

Gelukkig zijn er nog geen wc-dames in het cultuurcentrum, het station, de Provinciale en Gemeentelijke Bibliotheken, in het Resto in Kuringen. Hoe het zit in de Hasseltse horecazaken, hebben we geen duidelijk beeld op.

Kennen jullie nog plaatsen in Hasselt waar jullie stoten op een toiletdame bij een hoogdringend bezoek aan het toilet? Laat het ons weten.
