FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC LIVE TO PRESENT RECORDING ARTISTS NAS AND DAMIAN ‘JR. GONG’ MARLEY FOR SPECIAL PROGRAM

‘Distant Relatives’ Event Dec. 12 Will Feature Hip-Hop and Reggae Legends In Conversation Moderated by MTV VJ Sway, Made Possible by VTech

WASHINGTON (Nov. 18, 2009)—National Geographic Live will conclude its fall event series with a one-of-a-kind evening with some of hip-hop’s most legendary figures. “Distant Relatives,” sponsored by VTech, will feature hip-hop icon Nas and Grammy-winning artist Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley, son of Bob Marley, in a discussion about the often under-appreciated evolution of and deep-rooted connections between reggae and hip-hop.

Joining them for this conversation, moderated by MTV VJ Sway, will be key players in the development of both musical genres, including Kool Herc, Rakim, Daddy U-Roy, King Jammy, Jeff Chang, Pat McKay, Waterflow and DJ Red Alert.

The event will take place at National Geographic’s Grosvenor Auditorium on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and may be purchased online at www.nglive.org, via telephone at (202) 857-7700, or in person at the National Geographic ticket office between
9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday to Friday. Tickets purchased online can be picked up in the lobby prior to the event.

Hip-hop, now a multibillion-dollar industry, originated as a vital form of cultural expression in Africa that was translocated by the slave trade to the Caribbean and the American colonies. It blossomed a half century ago in the dance halls of Kingston, Jamaica, and soon migrated to the parks jams and recreational centers of New York City, where the culture became known as hip-hop.

This evolution forms the basis of the “Distant Relatives” music project, a collaborative effort by Marley and Nas, which will comprise an album set for release in early 2010, a documentary film, performances and a series of public discussions, the first of which is this event hosted by National Geographic.

An open-mic party will be hosted at popular Washington nightclub Zanzibar following the event. National Geographic ticket holders will receive free admission with proof of purchase. For more information on the Zanzibar event, visit www.zanzibar-otw.com.

This event also will be streamed live and broadcast online at www.natgeomusic.net.

About “Distant Relatives”
“Distant Relatives” is an album created by two great artists to explore and celebrate the correlations and deep-rooted connections between reggae and hip-hop, tracing both sounds back to the African motherland that is both the cradle of humanity and the wellspring of mankind’s music. Unlike all previous collaborations between Jamaican and American artists, “Distant Relatives” is neither a remix nor a featured guest spot on a single track but a fully collaborative effort filling an entire album, opening new avenues of musical expression. Who better to fulfill this long-overdue mission? The youngest son of the legendary Bob Marley, and a hip-hop icon since 1991: Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Nas, whose success as a duo was proved in 2006 with the double-Grammy-Award-winning “Road to Zion.”

Although an album has yet to be dropped, the Distant Relatives known as Nas and Damian Marley are still trying to leave their impact outside of the music.

Teaming with National Geographic and V-Tech, the duo will have a panel debate next month in Washington D.C. Paying homage to the art of Hip Hop, the discussion will explore the origins of the genre and reveal what type of impact it has had across the globe.

The event is set to take place at National Geographic’s Grosvenor Auditorium on December 12.

Of course a history lesson wouldn’t be as effective without relevant teachers, as the two will be accompanied by legends in the game such as Rakim, DJ Kool Herc, DJ Red Alert, Jeff Chang and more.

Clearly a momentous occasion, MTVs own Sway Calloway will serve as the moderator for the event, which will also be filmed for a future documentary.

Fans will be in store for a surprise following the event as there will be an after party, as well as, an open-mic show at the nightclub Zanzibar.

Tickets for the panel discussion are quite limited and will run for about $25, but the fee will also serve as a ticket into the party following.

Those that are unable to dig deep into their pockets shouldn’t be worried about missing the actual debate as it will be streamed live and broadcasted through National Geographic’s Web site.

In terms of the album, Distant Relatives is set to drop sometime in 2010. Serving as a social commentary with content heavily revolving around Africa, features so far are rumored to include Young Jeezy, Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, Stephen Marley, Snoop Dogg and K’naan.

The first track has a massive sample I’m sure everyone will know (especially from your saturday nights in). The track is called “Requiem For A Dub” by Dubliss Nipplestep. Know very little the people who made it apart from they are from South Africa. The best way I have heard this track described is “dubstep on coke”, which is actually quite apt, you could almost call it Fidget Dubstep. I hooked on it, I should mention it has some insane bass, be warned.

Dubliss Nipplestep – Requiem For A Dub

So next up is a storming Welcome to Jamrock the Damian Marley track given the dubstep treatment by Savoy. This is a Canadian outfit, usually make more electro rocky stuff. But this track is a long way removed from that. This is deep and dirty, just love the original of this, so making it this down and dirty just makes me love it even more. I would sum by saying like Jamrock, like Dubstep, Love this.

Damian Marley – Welcome to Jamrock (Savoy remix)

Last track has been around for a while, but it has taken till now for me too listen to it. Its the Chubby Fingers dubstep remix of Bloc Party’s “Banquet”. Its another absolutely deep track, its such a good track in the first place its hard to top. But that increased bite to this remix has given new energy to the track and almost makes me want to metaphorically dig out my old bloc party tracks. Watch out at 3 mins, big bass drop comes out of nowhere.

October 22, 2009

(by Dillon Rand- The Montclair Times)

K’naan, a Somalian-born rapper whose February release “Troubadour” has raised heads, eyebrows, and spirits, is a breath of fresh air to hip-hop culture and music as a whole. K’naan grew up in a Somalia hindered by civil war, finding refuge in his home among a family of musicians and poets. As the Somalian government collapsed in 1991, K’naan and his family made it aboard the last commercial flight to the United States, as the embassy closed down shortly after their departure. He joined family in Harlem before moving to Toronto shortly after. There he dropped out of high school in 10th grade and started traveling, rapping at open mic events around the country. Vowing to not become a gangster rapper cliché, K’naan soon became recognized for his musical substance and his poise.

Today he stands as a success, recently touring as an act on Rock The Bells and many other music festivals this summer, as well as an opening act for headliners such as Snoop Dogg, Maroon 5, and now Lenny Kravitz. He opens for Kravitz tomorrow at The Wellmont Theatre.

DILLON RAND: Growing up Somalia, gangsterism is not something that is prided like it is in many cases in hip-hop here in the U.S. Can you explain what dramatic differences you’ve observed between the two cultures when it comes to crime and violence?

K’NAAN: Well, the major difference is that the violence in Somalia is a lot more rampant, and therefore it’s not exclusive violence. When you have something, whether it is negative or positive, if it’s exclusive it makes for something compelling. But if it’s just what is unfortunately part of the fabric of society, then it’s not so interesting to anybody. Nobody wants to sing about it, it’s just what it is.

DILLON: So it’s the radicalism of it that makes it interesting to people, as opposed to if it were a part of the everyday routine like eating breakfast?

K’NAAN: Yeah it is. I think it’s mainly because you have it here where it’s like this particular neighborhood has an economic problem and a drug problem and therefore you have violence and some people make it cool because it’s unique. Also it’s cinematic, it’s Hollywood and all of that. But over there it’s rough and dirty and very real. It’s a part of everyday life and therefore it has nothing to do with “cool.” The kids that could claim “coolness” back home in Somalia were the kids who could say, “I’m non-violent, I’m not in the streets, I’m not in the game, I like girls.” Them kind of kids, that’s who you called cool, because they had this rare kind of privilege to be that way.

DILLON: How do you feel really experiencing these two different worlds has played into your music?

K’NAAN: I think a lot of who I am has been developed by the two cultures. I’m someone who writes himself into songs. I don’t do dishonest music. And so my background back home in Somalia and living in the ghettoes of North America has profoundly impacted me, so that’s what I write about.

DILLON: Your grandfather is and your mother were both poets and your aunt was a singer. Growing up in this artistic household in Somalia, did you feel like it challenged you to become the kind of musician you are today?

K’NAAN: Well, it challenged me to be unique. It challenged me to see the world in my own viewpoint rather than follow the designed path. So that’s what it made me see, how to always be unique in whatever circumstances I’m in. And also how to be artistic and see the world even when it’s tragic and difficult, and how to make art out of that, because they’ve always done that.

DILLON: In September you put out a three-volume remix project with producer J. Period called “The Messengers,” with each volume as a tribute to an iconic musician. The three musicians were Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, and Bob Dylan. What was it that you saw in these three musicians that you saw in yourself enough to take on this project?

K’NAAN: I wouldn’t claim so much that the same thing I saw in them is what I saw in myself, but they are definitely people I admire. They all have impacted on me and my career. I just wanted to do something that would pay tribute to those people who I think helped changed the world.

DILLON: You were actually invited to record in Bob Marley’s studio, and that’s where you did most of your recent album. What was that experience like?

K’NAAN: Pretty amazing (laughs). That’s the best I can describe it, quite amazing.

DILLON: You’ve expressed publicly that you felt the situation with the Somali pirates earlier this year was handled poorly. What do you feel was done wrong and why was it wrong?

K’NAAN: I think it was covered in a one-sided manner. Somalia was painted as this place that was unreasonable and these people who were pirates were all painted in this evil picture as if they had just sprung out of nowhere, just out of greed. What I was trying to show the world was that there were in fact reasons that gave birth to these so-called pirates.

DILLON: The last album, “Troubadour” was a huge success and featured Damian Marley, Mos Def, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Chubb Rock, and Kirk Hammett of Metallica. You’ve said that the album is titled “Troubadour” because you are from somewhere, but you don’t belong to anything. Down the road, do you want to belong to something or would you enjoy it more to forever be this troubadour?

K’NAAN: So far in my life, this has been fine for me. It works for me. I like it. I like just being around with pieces of myself in different places. I don’t know, maybe when I get older I’ll want more stability and want to belong. But right now I just feel I’ve got to belong to the world.

2009 är reggaebarnens år. Först ut var Queen Ifrica. Sen var det Tarrus Rileys tur. Och nu har stafettpinnen nått Lee Perrys son Omar Perry.

Can’t Stop Us Now är Omar Perrys uppföljare till 2007-års debut Man Free.

Omar Perry spelar säkert hela skivan igenom. Arvet från hans far märks på en cover av Junior Byles klassiska Beat Down Babylon och en version av Max Romeos Chase the Devil.

Av pappa Perrys experimentlusta märks inte mycket annat än en fet och annorlunda version av Ini Kamozes World a Music som gjorts världskänd genom Damian ”Jr. Gong” Marleys Welcome to Jamrock. Omar Perrys version heter Boom Town och är en riktigt stökig historia.
