J’aurais préféré pour toi
Juste inverser le cours des choses
J’aurais aimé, et toi
Une main tendue, une rose

J’aurais aimé de toi
La certitude d’un geste
Simplement quand ça n’va pas
Ne pas se fuir comme la peste

Ils en étaient déboussolés
De voir que l’on tenait quand même
Et nous les premiers étonnés de récolter
Ce que l’on sème
Tout ce que l’on s’aime…

J’aurais préféré ma foi
Eviter nos sombres démences
Et maintes maintes fois
Oublier d’partir en vacances

En vacances de toi
Et comme l’amitié nous rattrape
Nous rattrape à chaque fois
Autant tenir quand ça dérape

Ils en étaient déboussolés
De voir que l’on tenait quand même
Et nous les premiers étonnés de récolter
Ce que l’on sème
Tout ce que l’on s’aime..Tout ce que l’on s’aime

J’aurais bien voulu tu sais
Tenir le cap, sauver les murs
Courir sans m’arrêter
Ne pas frissonner sous l’armure

Et j’aurais voulu tu sais
La longue traversée tranquille
J’aurais même imaginé
Ne jamais atteindre une rive

Ils en étaient déboussolés
De voir que l’on tenait quand même
Et nous les premiers étonnés de récolter
Ce que l’on sème
Tout ce que l’on s’aime… Tout ce que l’on s’aime

J’aurais aimé tu sais
Eviter nos fausses mesures
J’aurais même préféré
De nous une lettre d’injure

J’aurai voulu parfois

United States of Eurasia … Une chanson maginfique. Tout simplement. On sent trois influences : Live or let die de Mac Cartney, We are the Champions de Queen, et One Night in Bankock de Murray Head …

I usually have two boxes of unsorted vinyl to hand.
One should be filled with favourite home listening records (most of Tom Waits’, a couple of Fela Kuti, Björk and the like).
The other should be cast-offs while selecting for dj outings.

Of course, both are mixed.
And from that mixedness comes this mixedness:

1- The Day that I die – Good Charlotte :

2 – Mr Jack – System Of A Down :

3 – Empty Walls – Serj Tankian :

4 – Girls and Boys – Good Charlotte :

6 – Hyper chondriac music – Muse :

7 – Serious – Scars on Broadway :

8 – Played alive (the bongo song) – Safri Duo :

9 – Adios – Rammstein :

11 – Question ! – System Of a Down :
Chanson à écouter le volume à fond, (surtout la fin), sinon ça n’a aucun intérêt.

12 - Maddening Cloud – Blonde Redhead :

13 – Push the limit – Enigma :

16 – No Weather – Stellastar :

20 – Requiem For A Dream – Clint Mansell :

Dance to The Music | Sly Stone Documentary

December 6th, Dutch broadcasting network NPS premiered the documentary “Dance To The Music“, a search for funk legend Sly Stone. Sly Stone has been one of music’s great recluses for some 20-odd years… he vanished into rumor in the 1980s.

Sly and the Family Stone were pioneers of psychedelic soul-funk. The group formed in San Francisco, California, USA, in 1967, and disbanded in 1975. The Family Stone was comprised of men and women, and blacks and whites, making the band one of the first fully integrated groups in history. Their music was joyous, but as the ’60s ended, so did the good times…

The album “Dance To The Music“, generated a Top Ten pop and R&B hit with its title track early in 1968. “Everyday People“, released late in 1968 rocketed to the top of the pop and R&B charts and set the stage for the breakthrough success of 1969’s “Stand!“. The Family Stone quickly became known as one of the best live bands, and their performance at Woodstock was widely hailed as one of the festival’s best.

“There was probably no more Woodstockian moment at Woodstock than when he and the Family Stone, his multi-racial, four-man, two-woman band, took control of the festival in the wee hours of August 17, 1969, getting upwards of 400,000 people pulsing in unison to an extended version of “I Want to Take You Higher.” For one early morning, at least, the idea of “getting higher” wasn’t an empty pop-culture construct or a stoner joke, but a matter of transcendence. This man had power.”

The story of Sly Stone began with enormous promise and, subsequently, proceeded along a rocky road that would see this hugely gifted singer/songwriter forced into musical retirement by a common Twentieth Century malaise…
Stone became disillusioned with the ideals he had been preaching in his music, becoming addicted to a variety of drugs in the process. He was jailed for possession of cocaine in 1987 and ended the decade fighting further extradition charges. There was little of any note heard of Sly Stone in the 90’s.

When the family Stone was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 (the ceremony was presented by George Clinton), Sly slipped in and out of without saying much, unannounced. There were a series of weird resurfacings, like Stone’s appearance at the 2006 Grammy Awards, where he performed a mere snippet of “I Want to Take You Higher” with some guest musicians paying him tribute.

Sly Stone, remains elusive. His life-affirming songs timeless. Many people tried and failed to find him for a dozen years. His disappearance from public life has become a fascinating subject in and of itself.

A different Dutch crew, film students Jeroen Berkvens and Walter Stokman had already set out to track down Sly Stone in 1992 , with no succes. Their film, “Let Me Have It All” can be seen on YouTube.

In 2005 Willem Alkema (Dwars! Produkties) got struck by the same fascination and set out to LA, to try his luck in the search. With the help of local policeman Peter Coogan, Willem manages to come up with an address, but it doesn’t bring him any closer to actually interviewing or talking to Sly.

In his quest Willem teams up with the twin brothers Arno and Edwin Konings, who have been working hard on a Sly Stone biography since 2002 (the book is expected early 2010). Eventually with help from them, Sly’s sister and an old drum machine, Willem and ‘Da Funk Twinz’ succeed in meeting up with Sly in person, in a Disneyland hotel room, without cameras.

In the end of the documentary Willem Alkema returns to see Sly perform at the Noth Sea Jazz festival 2007 (NL). He asks for an interview but is not permitted one. At the end of the show, he does get one question, on camera…

He asks Sly : “How do you feel, being back on stage?”
Sly answers: “Five feet taller than I usually am…”

It’s actually Sly’s first “interview” in 13 years…

Watch the first 2 minutes of “Dance to The Music”

There’s still music in Sly Stone, in 2008 Willem Alkema received a new song from Sly which is played in the movie…

“Dance To The Music” will be touring theatres across The Netherlands around October 2009. There are plans for an international release and a 90 min. DVD with extra materials.

Lex remembers and shares thoughts on Sly Stone, who celebrates his birthday on March 15. Happy birth

Lex remembers and shares thoughts on Sly Stone, who celebrates his birthday on March 15. Happy birthday Sly.

My mom used to constantly remind me that way before the Beatles AND the Partridge Family, I danced to the beat of Sly and the Family Stone. Of course like any good son, I’d deny the memory and tell my mom that she “remembered wrong” (after all, why should she be “right” all of the time?)

This would invariably throw me back in time to mid 1971 in South Central Los Angeles. I remember friends and family dancing to Sly’s first greatest hits album and the yellow Epic Records label on the album spinning on the family stereo. I remember that the songs were infectious, memorable, and fun. “Dance to the Music,” “M’Lady,” “Fun,” and “Hot Fun In The Summertime” stand out in my mind. According to the time frame, I was 2 years old.

The messages in the songs were clear, simple, and aimed at everyone. It was peace and love wrapped in a funky pop music confection. Everybody is a star. You can make it if you try. I am everyday people. I wanna take you higher. Thank you for letting me be myself again. Sly’s music was universal.

Sly and the Family Stone were much more than the sum of their parts. Musically, there was no one like them. Sly mixed soul music with pop, rock, and funky rhythm and blues. Together, they created a sound that gave you the urge to involuntarily shake your ass. So, I shook my ass until I fell asleep with a bottle of chocolate milk.

They are also black and white, male and female working in sync. They were the musical equivalent of what the ideal society should be. Like musical notes boppin’ and bouncin’ around in perfect harmony, everybody participates in creating something bigger, greater, and more positive while maintaining an individual “groove.”

The next time you’re listening to Sly and the Family Stone, you’ll not only shake and shimmy, but you’ll have a positive vibe in your heart and mind. And if not, that’s okay. The rest of us will be there, shouting “All the squares, go home!”

Big love to Sly Stone.

Ok, I dare you to try this… and then blog about it (or at least tell someone about it). Take your iPod (or MP3 player), put it onto shuffle mode, press play and then LIST in order, the next 20 songs that it selects. You don’t have to listen to them, just list them. This is not original with me; my wife did it first, and I think David Crowder did it before that. So obviously all the cool people are doing it! (C’mon! It’ll be fun!)

Here’s the catch– NO CHEATS! (Translation: That means you can’t hide the fact that you have Barry Manilow or Sesame Street’s Greatest Hits in your player.)

Are you ready? Here’s my Shuffle:

1. We Will Dance w/ Joy to the World– Travis Cottrell, et al

2. The Test For Leprosy– Tourniquet

3. Against the Law– Stryper

4. Moanjam– King’s X

5. Romanze, from Eine Kleine Nachtmusik– W. A. Mozart

6. Come Away– Scott Brenner

7. Rnw@Y (Backyard Bangers ft. Phoenix Orion)– Linkin Park

8. The Lord’s Holy Spirit (Armenian Liturgy)– Bulgarian Orthodox Chant Sampler CD

9. Responsive Reading 1– Travis Cottrell et al

10. I Love the Lord– Petra (Petra Praise)

11. Saving Grace– Steve Jones (Playlist: Stand in Awe)

12. Dysfunctional Domicile– Tourniquet

13. Take Me In– Petra (Petra Praise)

14. Soldiers Under Command– Stryper

15. You Are Mighty– Jeremy Sinott (Winds of Worship 3: Toronto, Canada)

16. Forever– Chris Tomlin

17. The Practice of the Presence of God (section 5)– Brother Lawrence (audio book)

18. Mission– King’s X

19. How To Pray For the Sick– Rick Evans (from Fresh Fire For Healing conference)

20. To Hell With the Devil– Stryper

Do it. Shuffle it.

Check it out!!

Here’s some other good new worship music to be checking out:

1. The new Passion CD was released earlier this month, called Passion: God of this City, and though I haven’t heard the whole thing (money’s tight, y’know), Tracy downloaded some of the songs (pre-release) with some podcasts from some Passion ‘07 events. Some very good songs here; God of this City is an amazing song of intercession that I can hear in the mouths of many in the days to come!

2. The song, “God of This City,” is originally by a band called Bluetree; you can check them out here and can download their recording of the tune (and others of course) at iTunes.

3. The other new music to dive into is from a band called Fee (see their MySpace page here). Steve Fee has been heard on some of the Passion recordings, and his heart for worship is heard loud and clear on the album, called We Shine. There are several fantastic songs here, including All Because of Jesus, We Shine, Glorious One, and Beautiful the Blood. All of these are very doable in the church. Also on iTunes.

May the Lord God give us all hearts of worship, and passionate, devoted abandon for the glory of His name!! Live to worship, worship to live.

I found out late last night that Larry Norman, the original pioneer of so-called ”Christian” rock, died this past weekend. You can see some details and some of his last words here at his website.

In some of my formative years (ahem, the Eighties), Larry had a big impact on me, and I listened to his music a lot… even listened to the Only Visiting This Planet album on vinyl! I have played and sung several of his songs on my own guitar, including The Outlaw (my fave), I Wish We’d All Been Ready, and Why Don’t You Look Into Jesus? Many have lamented the direction that Christian music ended up going after Larry; I won’t really re-hash that here (though I could). Suffice it to say that for all his faults and faux pas, Larry was the real deal, bringing a prophetic voice and the boldness of a true evangelist into the church and the music scene when it was not cool or popular to do so. Larry will be missed, but may his heart and the Spirit that he carried be revived again in the hearts of musicians and believers in Jesus everywhere! Blessings to Larry’s Fam and all who are grieving today….

Recommended reading: From the CT Liveblog (here), and an excellent tribute (written a few years ago) to Larry Norman– and thoughts on the Christian music scene (here).

I want to start writing some regular things about worship… one of my greatest passions! Today

I want to start writing some regular things about worship… one of my greatest passions!

Today I want to highlight some new worship music that is out there that many may not have heard of. This guy’s name is Josh Young, and he’s the worship leader at the North Shore Bridge Church in Massachusetts; the association of Bridge Churches was founded by John Paul Jackson, for those of you who are familiar with him.

Josh’s CD is called Closer and it is one of the best things out there right now! Josh is kind of a mix of Jeremy Camp and Darrell Evans, with a lot of fresh all over it. The songs Beautiful, Gloria, and Amazing Love are my favorites; the drum breakdown into the end of Amazing Love is worth the price of the CD all by itself! Worshippers and worship leaders, I hope you will check Josh out on iTunes, or check out his website here. It’s passionate, real, and wonderful worship!
