it’s a good day. i’m not working. i’m in the middle of reading two great books (one for the bus and one for home time) – jeff chang’s immense can’t stop won’t stop and after dark by haruki murakami. tonight i’m going to that awesome free gig in tripod (in flagranti, the juan maclean dj set, the field), and right now i’m downloading the second installment of the delancey music service. i’m going to have to fight the urge to talk about this every week, but it’s a pretty big urge. this week the interview subject is dances with white girls, one of my favourite new(ish) producers. he first came to my attention with an awesome bmore remix of stevie nicks’ edge of seventeen. within 18 months i could hear one his tracks in urban outfitters on the rapture’s tapes compilation.

anyway he’s done a wee mix but they’ve not given us a tracklist. so i’m going to have to dig deep and find out what he’s playing. he’s an eccentric and interesting dude – check out his burning bridges and making paper mix from last year, where he goes from proper house and techno to funky house to bmore.

adnans put me on to the holy ghost!/new order thing a while back, but the story gets even more interesting. apparently this money studies crew wanted to make a video inspired by new order’s confusion, then one of them says this to half of holy ghost! whose jaw hits the floor. the full story is here. it seems like the whole hollerboard/ny community is pretty tight, so tight that when someone makes a video a whole raft of players show up to be a part of it. peep dances with white girls‘ suit game @ 4.10. and the brief visit to evr. and who wants to buy a drum machine on a sidewalk? anyway, cool video. enjoy.

NYC troublemaker Dances With White Girls sent me over some tracks to promote a couple of his west coast shows. He tackled Man Like Me’s single “London Town” and some how made it even catchier. DWWG’s Hip-Hop background made him balance the keys and bass really nicely with the vocals. Then his remix of fellow NYC dwellers, Cubic Zirconia, and their hit “Fuck Work” he actually makes his rap debut. His rapping is definitely better than any other Electro rapper (sans Pitbull, imho) out right now, check out his “Jiggle Dat” track for a great example of that. Also, if you’re in the area, be sure to check him out live. If you can’t see him live, than at least check his twitter, is hilarious.

I can’t decide if I’m feeling this track or not…

In terms of Man Like Me’s previous tracks I consider myself a big fan, but theres something about latest single ‘London Town’ that isn’t quite settling with me.

That aside, I’m still looking forward to their debut album which should be dropping very shortly if not already as their launch party kicked off last weekend.

President’s Day weekend is now upon us and those of us who have off on Monday have lots of options for how to spend our 3 days of freedom. Here are the ideas that are top of my list:

Friday Night:

I’m only going to recommend one event tonight because this is the only event you should even consider. When Michael T hosts a party you simply must go. This is the man who did the best cover at the Bowie Ball. The man who wears tuxedos and face powder. The man who inspires a cult following of hipsters and party people. The man who hosts regular panty parties. Tonight he’ll be at APT hosting “The Horrific Return of Tattler.” My friend Fucci will be spinning and if you tell them at the door that you’re there for Fucci the cover is only $5. Be there. Be fabulous.

Saturday Daytime:

Your first challenge on Saturday, if you aren’t planning something romantic, is to find a good brunch spot that also isn’t planning something romantic. I am the queen of brunch, it is my favorite meal, not to mention a NYC institution. K and I will be having a lovely platonic brunch at Elizabeth, which boasts not only a delicious brunch menu but also a year-round garden.

• Jane- charming, classic, the Eggs Benedict is lust worthy.
• 5 Points- mmm… pitchers of bloody marys!
• Resto- Belgian beer and Belgian waffles and Belgian chocolate

Post-brunch I recommend checking out some of the amazing vintage stores in the LES; with every non-single person otherwise occupied you’ll have the 60s bell-bottoms and 50s heels all to yourselves. New York Magazine has this (fairly) comprehensive LIST. I particularly recommend Yumi Kim for a good mix of old and new.

Saturday Night:

I would like to make one addition to my previous post, file this under “Angry Events;” the Warehouse Party at Refuge will be a “Valentine’s Day Riot” including Brooklyn’s own Theophilus London live, the sexy Roxy Cottontail and the totally rad Dances With White Girls. As if that wasn’t enough there will also be an enticing kissing booth, live performance art and installations by The Lowbrow Society for the Arts, true bittersweet candy hearts, dirty prizes and naughty giveaways.

Sunday:

Take this day for sleeping and basking in the knowledge that you have a whole extra day of weekend yet to come. Stay out later than usual Sunday night at KGB Bar for a fiction reading with Jonathan Baumbach and Paul Mamont. Or go over to Film Forum to see Our City of Dreams, a movie about 5 female artists working in NYC. And if you’re a music nerd you should be in Greenpoint checking out the merchandise at the Brooklyn Record Riot featuring more than 35 record dealers, DJs spinning and plenty of kielbasa and Polish beer at Warsaw.

Monday:

I for one hope to check out those photography exhibits I told you about recently and maybe even squeeze in another Oscar movie. If I hear about more events I’ll add them asap! Please let me know if you have anything to share!

While Chicago is experiencing one of its coldest winters in 12 years, there have been a few parties doing their part in keeping us warm with dancing and good times. Go Bang! is one of those parties. The brain child of Chicago indie DJ circuit veteran, Jordan Z, Go Bang! is a party that is high style and high fun. This month’s party falls on Valentines Day Eve and brings one of the hottest DJ/producers to Sonotheque, DANCES WITH WHITE GIRLS (see previous DWWG post).

DWWG, the father of “thug house”, is a Philly born/ NYC resident who always brings a set that’s chock full of fun and energy. I was lucky enough to experience this dude rip LA apart when he was djing a packed Mexican restaurant with OBEY’s Shepard Fairey on New Years Day. As you could probably imagine, it’s extremely difficult to drag people out on the day after NYE, but the crowd must have heard about DWWG’s energetic sets and take no prisoners attitude.

While I know I’m usually supplying heavy club bangers in my posts, I figured I would change things up and throw a curve ball at you. Some of you may have heard of an artist who goes by the name Dances With White Girls (aka my favorite recreational activity), well Throne of Blood, home of The Rapture, hit us up with a track off of DWWG’s new EP titled New Crack Swing. New Crack Swing dropped earlier this week and it’s actually pretty dope. At first the promo track, “Everyone’s Got To Make A Living”, wasn’t really clicking with me, but I have to say I’ve come to enjoy it. Dig into “Everyone’s Got To Make A Living” and don’t sleep on this dude, he has the potential to seriously blow up.

Coming straight out of Throne of Blood Records (Label set up by The Rapture and DJ James Friedman) is the incredibly infectious E.P ‘New Crack Swing’ by Dances With White Girls.

If the name is new to you, Dances With White Girls is a young man called ‘Frog’, not the most ‘gangster’ name you might say..maybe not..but Frog has landed with some awesome new tracks which fit nicely into a genre hes labelling as ‘Thug House’.

Throne of Blood was originally set up for The Rapture to release some early 12″ singles, but this E.P alone sets them in pretty good stead to have some cracking releases under their belts.

This track in particular has been storming around in my head the last few days..

DWWG otherwise known as Frog or a whole host of other aka’s is a heavy hittin DJ from NYC!

According to the Mad Decent blog this track is part of an EP due for release on Throne Of Blood Records. You’re thinking that this sounds like a proper rock label right there but thats so wrong…

DWWG describes his sound as

“philly kids in ibiza making beats on laptops with hipsters/hip-house electro bangers.”

or even better ”thug house“

now i’m down with that… but what it means is we get a tight funky electro house track with a killer bass, strong vocal lick and kick ass beats that pushes all the right buttons. Like my man Jonna said this weekend “Electro is killin it right now”. Dam right!
