Dangdai Dolls: A Salute to Chopin on His 200th Anniversary

Temperate forests of the Qinling Mountains.

The northern side of the range is prone to cold weather while the land to the south enjoys a sub-tropical climate, with the rich, fertile landscape supporting a wealth of wildlife and vegetation. The highest mountain in the range is Mount Taibai (3,767 metres), which is some 100 kilometres west of the ancient Chinese capital of Xi’an.

The Qinling Mountains region is home to the Changqing and Foping Nature Reserves.

Dangdai Doll Dai-dai, tribaleyesed

Dangdaier has issued a tribaleyesed version of Dangdai Doll Dai-dai with an accompanying poem Fear Not Mine Eyes by acclaimed lyrical poet Arturo Tora.

Fear Not Mine Eyes

Fear not mine eyes as they comprise,
Scenes of adventure, discovery and surprise!
At the break of dawn, they open up wide,
All bright and welcoming clear blue skies!

Fear not mine eyes because of their size,
Reflections of parents no doubt, I surmise!
Full of warm memories and meetings arise,
Among joy and laughter, tearful goodbyes!

Fear not mine eyes for they are wise,
From mother nature’s teaching all that ties,
Us together in worlds of beauty, truth and lies,
Of love and hatred, the latter despise.

Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China Official Face Logos have been released on 1 October 2009 by Dangdaier, the art production company supporting Chinese contemporary artist Lee Shi-min’s works,  to honour, celebrate and commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In the above version no. 8, note the hammer and sickle ears in reference to the solid foundation, hard work and discipline that underpin the Dangdai Dolls laudable position, stature and outlook, and corneal triangular reflections symbolizing the Mountain of Heavenly Calls.

As keen observers and natural scholars with exceptional intelligence and imagination, among an infinite population and variety of organisms, flora and fauna, this comes as no surprise to the twelve Dangdai Dolls resident in the Vernal Village of Dangdai in the Rainbow Forest, Valley of the Falls in the foothills of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls: they have long surmised that natural selection can create new species that in step-wise fashion acquire new features that help them survive, that simple natural laws can create an extraordinary and rich variety of life in the course of even less than an average human lifetime, as sure as humans that walk on land once came from the sea.

She is presently drawing up the underwater cave route map to be published in due course.

The diverse range of disciplines of the twelve Dangdai Dolls, all expert mountaineers, are as follows:

It is thought that each doll’s ascent of the mountain and subsequent journey is a metaphor for the euphoria experienced upon realization of a great achievement.

Chapter 2: Lan-lan, Wei-wei, and the Great Flood of Xia

Before the crack of dawn, Huang-huang woke Lan-lan up, saying, “Lan-lan, if you wish to travel to where Dong-dong had left, you should start your climb up to the Enchanted Terrace of the Talls, drink the waters from the Lake of Eternal Squalls and prepare Wei-wei for the long flight.” “Yes, alright,” Lan-lan said, as she slowly got up and walked towards the Blue Lagoon in the Valley of the Falls to wash up. A short time later, Lan-lan returned to the dining area, sat down at the table and began eating a pear, plum and peach she had retrieved from the bag of food Dong-dong had brought back the night before. With the peach in her mouth, Lan-lan slung her blue water-bag over her shoulder and proceeded to ascend the Mountain of Heavenly Calls.

Though the Enchanted Terrace was a mere podium, obscured by mists of swirling clouds, from Dangdai village below, Lan-lan, with her slender legs and long strides, was soon upon it. She sat down by the edge of the Lake and drank several mouthfuls of its cool clear waters which she cupped in her hands before filling up her water-bag. Her mouth soothed, she began to call for Wei-wei, her giant flying ox. Lan-lan called out, “Wei-wei, Wei-wei, it’s me, Lan-lan. I have some nice chestnuts for you,” as she withdrew several warm chestnuts from her coat pocket and raised them into the air. Not long after, attracted by the sight and smell of the freshly roasted chestnuts or Lan-lan’s melodious calls or all three, Wei-wei approached cautiously at first. As Wei-wei came closer and determined it was Lan-lan, Wei-wei’s posture relaxed, and she extended her tongue to take a chestnut from Lan-lan. “It is nice to see you again Wei-wei. You look the same, not a day older!” Lan-lan commented. Wei-wei smiled and remarked , “Likewise Lan-lan, you look young and pretty as ever! Where shall we go this morning?” “I want to fly for five hours to begin where Dong-dong had left off last night,” answered Lan-lan. “Yes, I know where it is as Rao-rao recounted last night,” Wei-wei said. “Good, good. Then let’s be on our way,” said Lan-lan as she climbed onto Wei-wei’s sturdy back, took hold of her steady horns, and gave her for nourishment the remaining chestnuts she had in her pockets.

With a bold leap from an edge of the Terrace, Wei-wei flew off into the sky with Lan-lan, firmly on her back, laughing gleefully. For the next few hours, Lan-lan and Wei-wei experienced a blur of colors, sights, sounds and smells, as they travelled back in time 600 years per hour. Then Lan-lan called for Wei-wei to stop as she saw a great mass of yellow come into view. Forms, figures and lines clarified as Wei-wei slowed and gently floated them down on a dry patch of land.

When Lan-lan saw many tribes united together to control a great flooding, she asked, “What are you doing?” To which Gun, the father of Yu the Great, answered, “The Yellow River has flooded and I have been appointed by Yao to stop the flooding. I have ordered the construction of large blockades to block the path of the water. Who are you?”

Lan-lan: My name is Lan-lan and this is my flying ox Wei-wei. I am from the present, contemporary, Land of the Dolls, Rainbow Forest in the Valley of the Falls, the Vernal Village Dangdai by Blue Lagoon Crawls, through the foothills of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls.

Wei-wei: I am Wei-wei from the Glacial Lake of Eternal Squalls, on the Enchanted Terrace of the Talls. At times our friends the Dangdai Dolls, climb up to greet us with their calls.

Lan-lan: Who are you?

Gun: My name is Gun. I am an elder of the Xia tribe which developed around the time of Zhuanxu, my ancestor and one of the legendary Five Emperors.

After nine minutes, Shun, Yao’s successor, noting the floods had become stronger, appointed Yu, the son of Gun, to finish Gun’s work. Yu adopted a method different from his father’s; he united all the people of every tribe and ordered them to help him build canals in all the major rivers that were flooding and lead it out to the sea. After 13 minutes, without going back to his home village, he succeeded in stopping the floods as his people praised his perseverance and was so inspired by him that other tribes joined in his work as well.

Yu stopped the floods and consequent destruction of crops, thereby increasing farm production. His Xia tribe’s influence strengthened and he became the leader of the surrounding tribes. Shun then sent Yu to lead an army to suppress the Sanmiao tribe who were continuously abusing the boundary tribes. Yu defeated and exiled them south to the Han River area. Shun and Yu’s victory strengthened the Xia tribe’s power even more. As Shun grew old, he abdicated the throne in favor of Yu which he deemed worthy and the perfect civil servant. The succession of Shun by Yu as the king and following conquest of other surrounding tribes including the three Miao tribes, quelled the frequent inter-tribal battles and signalled the start of the Xia Dynasty in a prevailing goverment monarchy of feudalism.

Yu, noticing the brilliance of Lan-lan’s attire, asked , “Are you the empress of your Dangdai tribe?” To which Lan-lan replied, “Oh no, I’m just an ordinary girl with a flare for fashion!” Yu then said, “In any case, I would like to invite you to see our great complex of large palaces in Yanshi – Yangcheng, the capital city of Xia, to meet the other sixteen sovereigns of the Xia Dynasty, each of whose reign lasted from ten to sixty years! “

Lan-lan and Wei-wei, led by Yu, entered the  palace complex through a forest of red pillars supporting them, where they met a procession of the Seventeen Sovereigns of the Xia Dynasty, headed by Yu the Great, in the following chronological order:

With undulating folk music blending into the moderate chorus of chatter that had built up around Lan-lan and her giant flying ox Wei-wei, Lan-lan acknowledged each of the seventeen sovereigns, taking seventeen small sips from a bronze cup of sorghum wine they all had in hand. In a final gesture of warmth, hospitality and filial piety, they all drank to the health, prosperity and longevity of the Xia dynasty and wish for a safe return flight home for Lan-lan and Wei-wei.

Lan-lan: Thank you so much for telling me of yourselves. I must leave before dusk and as light is fading, I should start my return home soon.

Yu the Great: Before you depart, please accept this offering of food and Chinese cowrie coins as a token of our new friendship and souvenir to remember us by.

Lan-lan graciously accepted the gift, then took several sips of glacial water from her blue leather water bottle slung across her chest which she shared with Wei-wei. Lan-lan mounted Wei-wei, grasped her long steady horns in her slender hands, and Wei-wei, with one great leap, flew into the air. The Seventeen Sovereigns of the Xia Dynasty watched in amazement as Lan-lan waved good-bye, quickly fading away in the wispy white clouds.

A little over three hours later, Lan-lan and Wei-wei glided into a clearing by Dangdai mountain village where a number of her tribe mates were setting the table, just in time for dinner.

Qing-qing: Where have you been? We were about to start supper without you.

Lan-lan: I went back to where Dong-dong and Rao-rao had left where I met the Seventeen Sovereigns of the Xia Dynasty and saw how Yu the Great stopped the Great Flood of the Yellow River. Then I visited their grand complex of palaces where they gave me this bag of food and coins as a token of friendship and remembrance.

Qing-qing, being curious, rushed towards her, opened the bag and looked inside:

Qing-qing: What a colorful collection of fruits, vegetables and coins! Apricots, strawberries, jujubes, calabash and bamboo shoots! This will be enough for all our meals tomorrow, along with a few treats for our animals!

Huang-huang, the eldest of the dolls, then uttered, “Put down your things Lan-lan and come to supper before it becomes cold. We will have plenty of time to listen to your adventure then.”

So Lan-lan joined her eleven tribe mates, eager to know of her journey, at the dinner table where awaited chestnut-melon rice and a pear-plum-peach pie made from the items of food Dong-dong had brought back the night before, while Wei-wei flew on upwards to the Enchanted Terrace of the Talls to return to Animal Kind. By the end of the meal, Qing-qing was so enthralled by Lan-lan’s tale that she decided to return the next day to where Lan-lan had left. Lan-lan told her, “You needn’t leave as early as we did this morning as your flying tiger Xian-xian is faster than Wei-wei.” Qing-qing replied, “Yes, I shall however soon go to bed and wake up early for the long flight.”

Historical Legacy of Yu the Great

Before his death, instead of bestowing power upon the person deemed most capable of ruling, Yu gave his throne to his son, Qi, setting the precedence for dynastic rule or the Hereditary System. The Xia Dynasty began a period of family or clan control. Jie, the last ruler of the Xia dynasty, was said to be a corrupt king. He was overthrown by Tang, the first king of the Shang dynasty.

After the defeat of Xia by Shang, some members of the royal family of Xia Dynasty survived as the Qi (Henan) state until 445 BC. The Qi state was well recorded in the Oracle script as the one major supporter of the Xia Dynasty. The Kings of the state of Yue, and therefore its successor state Minyue, also claimed to be descended from Yu the Great.

Chaper 1: Dong-dong, Rao-rao and the Eight Immortals

It was a wonderfully clear fresh spring day when Dong-dong, sitting straddled upon Rao-rao, her flying giant gray rat, landed in a small field clearing by a wood of trees in eastern China. As Dong-dong dismounted from Rao-rao, she saw on the horizon eight small moving figures. Somewhat weary, Dong-dong fashioned a bed of leaves from the surrounding birches and lay down to rest as Rao-rao wistfully foraged around for insects and nuts.

Not long after, Dong-dong was awoken by Rao-rao’s gentle nudges to chatter from eight men in two groups spendidly dressed, who had gathered around them. A group of three approached them and one of them uttered:

Heavenly Sovereign: Hello, we are the Three Sovereigns: I am the Heavenly Sovereign, to my right is the Earthly Sovereign and on my left is the Human Sovereign. What is your name?

Dong-dong: My name is Dong-dong and this is my flying rat, Rao-rao.

Heavenly Sovereign: And where are you from?

Dong-dong: We are from the present, contemporary, Land of the Dolls, Rainbow Forest in the Valley of the Falls, the Vernal Village Dangdai by Blue Lagoon crawls, through the foothills of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls.

Heavenly Sovereign: How did you come here?

Dong-dong: I climb up from Dangdai Village to the Glacial Lake of Eternal Squalls, on the Enchanted Terrace of the Talls at the peak of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls, where Rao-rao and her eleven animal friends reside, and drink from the clear freshwaters that give us a trinity of gifts: eternal youth, the ability to take flight upon our associated animals, and to travel backwards in time and space, to the past.

Heavenly Sovereign: What are you doing here?

Dong-dong: We are here to learn about the art, history and culture of peoples from around the world.

Heavenly Sovereign: That is delightful! We would be pleased to tell you of ourselves. We are supreme beings, god-kings or demi-gods who use our magical powers to improve the lives of our people. Because of our lofty virtue, we live to a great age and rule over a period of great peace.

On my right here is my goddess wife The Earthly Sovereign, and on my left, my future incarnation The Human Sovereign (泰皇 or 人皇).  The Earthly Sovereign and I are the ancestors of humankind after a devastating flood. I invented the Primal Arrangement of the Eight Trigrams (Xian Tian Ba Gua, 先天八卦). I am a scholar of heaven and earth, the sky and the stars above, the earth below, and flora and fauna. From keen observations of near and far, I made 8 Yin Yang signs (the 8 trigrams that constitute the Ba gua) to simulate the rules of the universe.

Earthly Sovereign: I am the inventor of fire and the Yellow Empress, the ancestor of all Han Chinese people.

Human Sovereign: I invented farming and taught people how to grow crops and fish. I was the first to use herbs for medical purposes and invented money and market for the exchange of goods.

At this point, the other group of five approached. One of them dressed in a fine robe of yellow asked:

Yellow Emperor: Who is this strange girl with a beanie hat and such brilliantly colored clothes?

Heavenly Sovereign: This is Dong-dong and her giant flying rat Rao-rao. They are from our future, their present, contemporary, Land of the Dolls, Rainbow Forest in the Valley of the Falls, the Vernal Village Dangdai by Blue Lagoon crawls, through the foothills of the Mountain of Heavenly Calls. They are here to learn of us, our art, history and culture.

Yellow Emperor: How wonderful! I am honored to tell you of our group The Five Emperors. I am the central Yellow Emperor (黄帝); to my left are Zhuanxu (顓頊) and Emperor Ku (帝嚳); and to my right Emperor Yao (堯) and Emperor Shun (舜). We are morally perfect sage-kings, model rulers and moral exemplars, pleased to meet you. We are only people with great contributions or famous rulers of tribal unions whose positions have been attained by election by other chiefs in the tribal unions.

Dong-dong: I see, I see, how interesting! Thank you so much for telling me of yourselves. I must leave before dusk and as light is growing faint, I should start my return home soon.

Human Sovereign: Before you depart, please accept this offering of food as a token of our new friendship and as a souvenir to remember us and our meeting.

Dong-dong gratefully acknowledged the gift and her new acquaintances, then took several sips of glacial freshwater from her gray leather water bottle slung across her chest which she shared with Rao-rao. Dong-dong mounted Rao-rao, grasped her long gray mains in her slender hands, and Rao-rao, with one great leap, flew into the air. The Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors watched in amazement as Dong-dong waved good-bye, quickly fading away in the wispy white clouds.

Some ten and a half hours later, Dong-dong and Rao-rao glided into a clearing by Dangdai mountain village where, still dark before dawn, most of her eleven tribe mates were fast asleep, three of them to each of four right-angled timber houses.

Lan-lan: Where have you been? We had supper without you.

Dong-dong: I went back to the beginning of history here where I met two groups of wonderful people, Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors. They told me of their great deeds and virtues and gave me this bag of food as a token of friendship and remembrance.

Lan-lan, being an inquisitive carpenter, quickly walked towards her, opened the bag and looked inside:

Lan-lan: What a colorful collection of fruits and vegetables! Chestnuts, pears, plums, peaches and melons! This will be enough for all our meals today, along with a few treats for our animals!

Huang-huang, the eldest of the dolls, then uttered, “Put down your things Dong-dong and go to sleep. We will have plenty of time to listen to your adventure at breakfast.”

After a short repose and woken by the light of dawn, Dong-dong joined her eleven tribe mates, eager to know of her journey, at the dining table, while Rao-rao flew on upwards to the Enchanted Terrace of the Talls to return to Animal Kind. By the end of the meal, Lan-lan was so enthralled by Dong-dong’s tale that she decided to return to where Dong-dong had left. Dong-dong told her, “You should leave soon as even though your flying ox Wei-wei is faster than Rao-rao, the trip will take quite some time, longer than I had expected.” Lan-lan replied, “Yes, I will soon prepare to ascend the Mountain of Heavenly Calls and summon Wei-wei for the long flight.”

In Dangdai Dolls: A Journey Through the Dynasties, Lee Shi-min has beautifully adapted his Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China to tell the tale of 12 vivacious young women from the Vernal Village of Dangdai, blessed with a trinity of gifts — those of eternal youth, flight upon associated animals, and the ability to go backwards in space and time, as they travel through the colorful art, history and culture of China from the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors period more than 2,000 years ago to the present-day Dang dynasty.

Dangdai Dolls are on a quest,

Dangdai Dolls march on possessed,
By passions to ride upon a crest,
Of waves, stones, sand-washed bones,
Always looking freshly dressed!

Inventions of style are so expressed,
That viewers desire and are impressed,
By the grace and elegance of designs,
Flowing from a fountain of minds!

Dangdai Dolls have one request:
Admirers visit and keep abreast,
Of latest creations to leave the nest,
Ideas alive with love and zest!

The critically acclaimed art anthem dollonaise accompanies the twelve Dangdai Dolls: The Great Doll of China, based on the artist’s Dangdai serial works, in what some consider an underscoring of 30 years of China’s continuing reform and opening up policy initiated in December 1978.

Unlike the March of the Volunteers, China’s national anthem, the March of the Dolls is not a call to bear arms nor resistance against invading forces but an allegory for cross-cultural understanding, exchange and embrace, open-minded, tolerant, caring societies, and local, global and universal harmony.
