News & Trends: Decadent designer Tom Ford has designed the ultimate in aviator sunglasses this season, taking a classic style to a whole other level. Ford’s new Pablo model, recently spotted on Brad Pitt, comes with two sets of lenses: one that fits right into the metal frame and the other set in plastic inserts giving the luxurious look of combination shades. Sunglass connoisseurs will notice the similarities to the Tom Ford Hawkings aviator, no longer being made, from his debut line.

The Pablo represents an evolution of the earlier Ford design in that they are much better proportioned, enabling a fine fit for both men and women. Lo que nadie duda a estas alturas de la partida es que Ewan McGregor es uno de los actores más aclamados y reputados de su generación, ni Daniel Craig o Jude Law han conseguido alcanzar su status dentro de la industria cinematográfica. Acaba de estrenar en Estados Unidos “The Men Who Stare at Goats“ donde interpreta a Bob Wilton. Le acompañan en el cartel de esta alocada comedia nada más y nada menos que George Clooney, Kevin Spacey o Jeff Bridges. Pero en la videoarena nos preguntamos ¿cuál fue el primer papel cinematográfico de este actor escocés? Cómo fueron sus inicios  antes de convertirse en el fetiche de Danny Boyle.  

Renton le trajo la fama internacional.

El viaje al estrellato de este actor comienza en 31 de marzo de 1971, fecha en la que nace. A los 16 años deja su localidad natal de Crieff para iniciar su carrera teatral uniéndose a Perth Repertory Theatre. Sus padres no tardarían en animarle a que abandonara esta compañía para que se formara como actor.  Así que comenzó sus estudios de arte dramático en Kirkcaldly en Fife y en la Escuela de Música y Drama de Guildhall. Allí compartió estudios con Daniel Craig, Alistair McGowan, David Thewlis o Naveen Andrews, famoso por su papel de Said en “Perdidos” y con el que mantiene su relación de amistad en la actualidad. A los 22 años tras haber interpretado en la televisión a Jimmy en la serie “Family style”, consiguió dar el salto al cine y consiguió su primer papel gracias a Susan Figgis que le ofertó el papel de Álvarez en la película del director escocés Bill Forsyth llamada “BEING HUMAN“, y que en España se tradujo como  “Un hombre perdido en el tiempo”.

Una historia dividida en cinco capítulos que recorre la historia de la humanidad a través del personaje de Héctor interpretado por Robin Williams. McGregor aparece en el tercer segmento en un corto y tragicómico papel. Os centro un poco en la trama. El barco español donde viaja esta suerte de héroe temporal naufraga enfrente de la costas de África. Allí los supervivientes pasan hambre y sed. Un par de marineros no se les ocurre la feliz idea de robar y beberse todo el agua que queda. Por ese motivo, Don Pablo jefe de la expedición les castigará a la pena máxima, morir crucificados bajo el sol.  Será Álvarez el que se presente voluntario en lugar de Héctor para ajusticiarlos.

No fue uno de esos comienzos escurridizos como el protagonizado por Sigourney Weaver. McGregor tenía un par de frases. Cortas pero las tenía, y encima se echo una carrerita por la playa.

Un año después Danny Boyle le descubriría y le daría el papel de Alex Law en “Tumba abierta“. En 1995 mientras trabajaba en el programa de televisión “Kavanagh QC” conoce a diseñadora de producción francesa Eve Mavrakis en Francia. Durante ese verano el 22 de julio se casan en Dordogne, Aquitania (Francia) y fruto de esta unión son las dos hijas que tienen, Clara Mathilde y Esther Rose. Un año después daría el salto definitivo a la fama gracias al papel de Mark Renton en “Trainspotting“. Aquí volvería a coincidir con un viejo amigo, ya que ambos habían coincidido durante su debut cinematográfico, hablo del actor Robert Carlyle, que aparecía también en “Un hombre perdido en el tiempo” interpretando en el primer segmento a Shamen. Un vikingo que le robará a Hector su mujer e hija.

Pero las coincidencias en su carrera no acabarán aquí ya que la llave que le abrió las puertas al estrellato vino de la mano de Baz Luhrmann que le ofreció el papel Christian en “Moulin Rouge” y fue George Lucas quien le diera el empujón final al ofrecerle el papel de joven Obi Wan Kenobi en la famosa epopeya galáctica. Aceptó el papel porque su tío el también actor Denis Lawson aparecía en ”La guerra de las galaxias” interpretando a Rojo dos en la batalla final en la Estrella de la Muerte.

En la actualidad, McGregor ha formado una compañía de producción con sus amigos Jonny Lee Miller, Sean Pertwee, Jude Law y Sadie Frost, llamada “Natural Nylon”. Con ella esperan hacer películas innovadoras que no se ajusten a los estándares de Hollywood.

I’m back. I needed a rest. Well, part of the reason I’ve been away is because I was on vacation and the other part of the reason was because I just had to get all my ducks in a row afterwards and get myself back into the swing of things. And now I’m not sure if I got my blog game on, but I’ll give it my best shot.

Okay, well, my vacation was spent with my family in Illinois and spent most of the time just hanging out with my father, talking about family stuff, waxing sentimental and overall just enjoying each other’s company. We had a big family dinner on Saturday at The Ranch where in a moment of weakness from too much to eat, I divulged my famous apple pie recipe to my sister-in-law. And I also broke tradition and did not make plans to go Alexander’s Steakhouse. My trips in the recent past to the Midwest have been short and rushed and I just wanted to enjoy time with my family.

And in regards to the family stuff we talked about there was some unbelievably fantastic documentation which you’ll be seeing once the next chapters of McGinty Chronicles launch, most likely beginning after the first of the year. And I’m really looking forward to getting that back up and running. And I also was given John Logan’s (my great-grandfather) cane shaped walking stick which will get hung on the wall of my office as soon as I figure just where I want it and when I find an appropriate way to hang it. I want just the right holder for it and put it where it will be out of hand’s reach.

So, Brian, what’s up with that blog picture? I’m glad you asked. While we were going through stacks of pictures, I found a series of pictures that were taken of me through my first few years. This one happens to be my hospital picture. Cute…no?  Wait until you see tomorrow’s.

Okay, so I was home from my trip in time for work on Wednesday and by Friday, I needed a break so it was off to the theater. We had tickets to see A Steady Rain starring Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. It was a 2-man, no-intermission play about two cop partners who had been friends since kindergarten in a tough Chicago neighborhood and how their lives had intertwined since, including bachelor Craig being in love with married but cheating (with a hooker) Jackman’s wife. In every sense of the word it was a minimalist set, namely two chairs on a representative cement slab and an occasional dimly lit backdrop of either a ghetto apartment building or a densely wooded area. I heard gasps and groans as the story developed coming from the audience but it wasn’t really gripping me like that. For me it just sort of rolled along with no emotion. I gave it a 6 and Ariel gave it a 9.

At the end of the play, the two stars announced that it was time for a Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS drive, which happens twice a year on Broadway for period of time and among the incentives to drop big dollars in the buckets by the exit doors were signed Playbills and posters. But the big ticket of the night was Jackman’s announcement that the wifebeater tanktop he was wearing on stage that night would be autographed and given to the highest bidder from the audience, beginning at one thousand dollars. Two people waged a bidding war and at 10 thousand, Jackman stopped the auction and announced that for that amount each, both he and Craig would sign their shirts for the two warring bidders backstage.

By contrast, I heard on Saturday that the sequined glove Michael Jackson wore when he did his moonwalk for the first time on television was among the items being auctioned off that night at the Julien’s Auction, and the estimated amount it was expected to bring in was in the neighborhood of $50,000. Not all that big a big price, for something of the “King Of Pop’s” I thought, by comparison to a tanktop for $10,000 the night before. Well, the glove, as it turns out, sold for $350,000. So, egg on my face.

Well, I’m really writing this on Sunday night and I’m watching the American Music Awards which I’ll probably moan and groan about tomorrow, if I deem any of it worthy of mention.

I was looking up Edward Cullen on Wikipedia and I saw that it said that Edward was a Byronic hero. Because of that, I clicked on the link that explained what a Byronic hero was. Anyway, as I was reading the characteristics, it did sounds like Edward As I continued down the website, it mentioned that Lestat from the Vampire Chronicles and the Phantom from the Phantom of the Opera were Byronic heros as well, but I digress with the Phantom. That made me think about how much Lestat and Edward were alike in the sense that they are both Byronic heros. I think that’s the reason why I don’t like either character. I mean, it’s not that I hate them, but it’s just that they’re not my favorites characters from their respective series. Anyway, I think that’s the reason why I don’t like Lestat and Edward is the fact that they’re Byronic heros.

In my search for any Lestat vs. Edward stuff, I found quite a few pictures that made fun of Edward and the Twilight series or making fun of the fact the Twilight series “outshines” the Vampire Chronicles. The one that I found to be the most funny was the one where it showed Edward and Bella together in the first box, and the following three boxes showing Louis, Lestat, and Armand telling their opinions on the series. I found that Lestat’s and Armand’s reactions to be the most funny. Their reactions were classic Lestat and Armand. Anyway, the next one that I thought was funny was the one where Lestat as picking on Edward. I just found those funny. By the way, you can find the originals at this site.

There are so many important elements to a James Bond film: danger, beautiful women, product placement…..

Well, for the new Sandra Bullock movie, “The Blind Side”, I had confirmed with them for PRESS PASSES for the night. I spoke to the publicity department and also the people in charge of the photography press.  I was so excited! I arrived with m good friend Elisa and we noticed the line for photography press was huge!  They had two separate lines depending on if you were there to video or photograph.

Looking so young, we were asked a few times if we were with press. I explained what website we were covering it for and we had spoken to people and we would be on the list.  After waiting outside for over an hour in the cold, finally they let the photographers start lining up and given out press credentials.  They could not find our names on the list and we were told we would get in.  Then I showed them an e-mail sent confirming we have a spot.  The lovely man (note “lovely” is sarcastic) John Lee, not only told us we were not approved to get in, but he let in FREELANCE photographers and then proceeded to tell us “there’s no more room”.  Clearly there was room.  He was snide and made sure he talked down to us.  He spent zero time trying to accommodate us.  He seemed like he LOVED the fact he got to turn away SOMEONE.

So…. to add insult to injury, we had to cross the street and wait there in hopes of grabbing a  picture of two.  I wasn’t very successful but I did put together a video and photographs (see above).

Despues de su tercer LP llamado Our Love To Admire, los neoyorquinos de Interpol han revelado detalles de lo que será su cuarto album de estudio.

El encargado de emocionarnos fue Sam Fogarino quien sin dar grandes detalles como el nombre del disco o de las canciones, revelo para la PASTE MAGAZINE  “el sonido del nuevo album se parece al de nuestro debut TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS, tratando de avanzar, hay un contranto que no tienes que decir para regresar a la etiqueta de  tu sonido”.

Agrego ademas que Daniel Craig, guitarra principal de la banda se esforzo mucho por encontrar su sonido, y que suena maravillo en grandes espacios.

I was bored recently and was on my computer I don’t know why but I typed Lestat vs. Edward into Google to see what I would get. Anyway, a lot of stuff that popped up were drawings of people making fun of Edward through Lestat’s point of view, and videos and articles asking who would win in a no-holds bar fight. I immediately thought that Lestat would definitely win. I say that because, after looking up their powers as a refresher, while Edward has super strength, super speed, and can read minds, Lestat can do or has all of that, plus so much more. Lestat also has pyrokinesis, the ability to fly, and he’s telekinetic. Plus, he killed an entire wolf pack by himself, albeit with the help of his two mastiff dogs. Anyway, I really think that Lestat would definitely win the fight against Edward, and that’s assuming Lestat doesn’t fall in love with Edward first, which I doubt would actually happen, and that Lestat doesn’t hurt Bella.

Look at the cutness that has sprung from the loins of The Jackman Cheese. Actually she’s adopted. But whatever. Seriously. 4 year old Ava Jackman is about the sweetest looking child ever to be not born by Angelina Jolie. In fact, keep the Jolie-Pitts away from Ava. They might try to re-adopt her.

Yet another reason to love Hugh Jackman. Sure he may be one of the absolutely corniest people on the face of the planet, but he’s normal. So normal. He takes his kids to get ice cream without an entourage in NYC. Proof that you’re not always a douche when you’re a celebrity.

Have you ever seen this TMZ video? Basically in the middle of a theater performance of A Steady Rain with Daniel Craig, a cell phone in the audience rings. Hugh is visibly irritated by it, but manages to deliver a concise and graceful smackdown while trying to maintain his cool. So many others would have lost their shit, but not our Jackman Cheese. He’s a consummate pro.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer is close to $4 billion dollars in debt and they will soon be looking for a buyer. The studio owns – among other things – the rights to the James Bond franchise, but this situation doesn’t seem to be affecting the momentum of the next film in the series. Apparently, the 23rd Bond film is already in pre-production and will start filming in the latter half of 2010. We can expect it to come out sometime in 2011 if everything goes according to plan. If you can’t wait until 2011, here is a short review for Casino Royale and my thoughts about Quantum of Solace from the end of last year. Also, if you’re really impatient and you happen to have several billion dollars lying around I’m sure you could buy MGM and get things moving a little faster.

I have been watching  movies more that I ought to (bear in mind that I am soon to become a senior in Korean Prep School- SATs rushing in).

Donnie Brasco – I think both (Leo and Al ………) are great actors And I found it bitter and sad to the right degree

My Left Foot – Yeah Simplicity rocks

Wuthering Heights – Ralph Fiennes YEAH But I am not so sure if Juliette Binoche was a perfect fit for Catherine.

Rachel Getting Married – They say its a campaign movie but I found it reasonably warming and nice.

But I didn’t really sympathize or feel in sync with the movie. Perhaps its my perfectly homogenous social sphere here in South Korea.

The Basketball Diaries – I hate drugs.

Layercake –  I get where its coming from but I think this type of ending does sort of throw the audience off. But I like Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller. Yeah, Sienna Miller shows up for literally five minutes on the movie, but that much more of Craig. Acceptable.

Trainspotting  - Ewan McGregor. I like you even after seeing you dive into the toilet filled with shit for the drug you’ve hid under your underwear. And such cool Scottish accents!!

Lust, Caution – The love scene was a bit too much for me but it was the best romance movie after The English Patient. Perhaps it’s because I don’t watch a lot of romance movies but still I think I cried well over ten minutes.

Stormbreaker – I don’t even want to remember, despite the short appearance of Ewan McGregor.

Age of Innocence – Visually pleasing and true to the original. I liked it.

and as for TV shows… ROME!!!

Rome – I am not deleting you for a very long time.

Not a new release for the LIFF, this is a pre-Bond Daniel Craig film where he plays a middle aged man beset by mental illness and paranoia and denial about his condition. He doesn’t trust the pills his brother (David Morrissey) is giving him and he finds it hard to relate to other people and communicate in a way we consider socially acceptable.  He then falls into a relationship with a Scottish girl (Kelly MacDonald) who is pregnant by her ex-boyfriend, but he loves her and the happiness she brings convinces him that he doesn’t need medical help, so he goes on a hiatus from the pills and things slowly spiral downwards from here on in.

I didn’t recognise Daniel Craig at all when the film began as he looks so different – older actually, compared to how he is now! He is excellent in this, managing to portray a difficult and complex condition in an authentic and discerning way.  I’m not a huge fan of Daniel Craig, but this is certainly one of his break out performances. It’s a very strong British ensemble actually – and that adds to the credence of the film and the characters. The relationship between Ray and Laura is lovely to watch because you are routing for them both to be happy together. And there are some overly romantic implausible scenes to enjoy as well – watching as she comes out onto the balcony to see him standing on the beach in the middle of a crop circle he has drawn in the sand is pure gooey.

The problem was the script – it was all too neat; too much of an exemplary tick the boxes screenplay. He meets girl, he’s happy, he gives up pills, he starts becoming paranoid, he becomes erratic and unstable, there’s a big explosive climax, and then an ending where he’s recovering and EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE OK. I think they could have been a bit more inventive and imaginative with the storyline and his behaviour. If he had been a bit more up and down throughout the film it might have created a bit more excitement and interest about what’s going to happen in the end. Instead it was pretty predictable and unoriginal. That said, the film didn’t over schmaltz things too much (there is all the cooking scenes with his brother…) and that saves the film from being completely innocuous.

It reminded me of a film I saw recently called ‘Adam’ – where the girl needs saving by someone who thinks and sees the world differently to her but ultimately that difference means they can never permanently be together.  I think it’s nye impossible to have a good mental illness/disability film with romance being a key genre, and I don’t expect there to ever be one (this coming from a girl who hasn’t seen Rain Man or A Beautiful Mind – shhhh!).

The acting and chemistry between all the cast was  good and this was definitely one of the better efforts coming out of the British film house. It’s worth seeing if it’s ever on but don’t expect to be profoundly blown away by it.

La dernière fois que nous avons parlé de lui, c’était dans d’autres salons de thé, à la sortie de “Quantum of Solace”. Nous nous pâmions et nous désespérions de devoir attendre 2011 la sortie du prochain James Bond…

Aujourd’hui, sur le chemin de notre promenade familiale, nous avons fait un saut au vidéo club. Je propose au mari “Les Insurgés” [="Defiance"] avec un “c’est un film d’Histoire, ça va te plaire” très convaincant. J’ai malencontreusement ajouté un “bon et puis c’est avec Daniel Craig: s’te plaît Chériiiiiiiii?” qui m’a valu en réponse: “Espèce d’adolescente attardée, va !”.

Le mari et moi avons bel et bien regardé Daniel crevant l’écran [17 pouces de notre ordinateur - nous sommes toujours anti-télé chez nous, même si parfois nous sommes sur le point de craquer: c'est l'effet "moins de 27° chez nous le soir en plein mois de novembre", on n'est pas habitués but we'll make it through winter like you did in Belarus, Dan! - don't mind if I call you Dan?].

Mon mari que j’aime m’a serrée contre lui devant les scènes les plus thrilling. Qu’il est fort, le mari!

Quelques minutes avant la fin, on a vérifié sur la jacquette que c’était bien une production américaine. Ouf! Ils allaient pas tuer Daniel Craig non plus, faut pas déconner!

Nous recommandons donc ce choix judicieux pour la paix des ménages: Madame pourra mater les yeux bleus de Daniel pendant que Monsieur appréciera un film d’action bien viril.

[Sur le fond de l'histoire, ça m'a rappelé The Fixer - lu il y a des années, mais un des bouquins qui m'ont le plus marquée sans doute, de Bernard Malamud, sur les pogroms en Ukraine au début du XXe siècle. Géographiquement et historiquement, on n'est pas très loin. Ca paraît presque fou de penser à tout ce qu'à pu vivre un même peuple en si peu de temps.]

Revenons-en à notre sujet.
