I was staying up way too late the other night and caught the Season 3 episode ” The Brig

I was staying up way too late the other night and caught the Season 3 episode ” The Brig” on HD ( Why do I do this? I own all the seasons and can watch them at anytime! I guess there’s just something special about stumbling onto a program. ) Maybe because of the hour I started deducing this theory that can account for its ridiculousness. And yet, here I am, writing about it anyway.

In this episode, Sawyer finally does in the elusive “original recipe” Sawyer, Anthony Cooper… the man he sees as the one who ruined his life, by strangling him with a chain. This is because Cooper’s son, John Locke, cannot. But it’s assumed, Locke would if he could. Benjamin Linus, kills Mr. Cooper’s son, John Locke… the man he perceives who ruined his life, in a similar manner with an extension cord ( Season 5, ” The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham”) . In turn, will Ben die, like Roger Linus, in an incident much like ” The Purge” ?

In the Season 3 finale, Jack Shephard is just about to make a suicidal move by throwing himself off a bridge in a drunken stupor, when he is stopped short by an accident on the road behind him. Christian Shephard, died in a suicidal drunken binge and threw himself into a fight he probably knew he couldn’t win (or at least, that’s what we were told).

So, this got me thinking… is this how things will end for the Losties? Will each of their demises ( if they take place) mirror those of their fathers/parents? Will Sawyer end up in a murder/suicide, possibly with Kate as his wife ? And will she die the same way as she killed her father i.e. in some kind of premeditated explosion?

There is another side to this scenario…

We saw Charlie’s mom in one episode but in ” Greatest Hits” she wasn’t there, especially noticeable absence during The Paces holiday/swimming lesson. Liam named his baby girl after Charlie and his mom in ” Fire + Water”. The way they spoke it sounded like she was no longer alive. Had Megan Pace given her life, possibly even in a sacrificial way, for her son(s) ? ( This is purely speculative…but it would be cool if we found that to be true somehow in Season Six).

David and Carmen are still around. So, does this bode well for Hugo?

Pierre Chang sent his son and wife away knowing that they would despise him, if it would save their lives. Miles finds out who his dad is and what he did for him. Miles, in turn, puts himself in a place of rejection by telling Pierre he is a time traveler to save his life ( and later, physically does rescue his father).

Does this work in reverse? Will Eloise get shot like she shot Daniel?

In this respect, is it fate or living by example?

I know… I know… I need to get more sleep.

According to Lost executive producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof (via TVguide.com):

If there is a theme to Lost’s sixth and final season, it might be “things coming full circle.”

“[In the first season, the characters] were running around the jungle, things felt intense and surprising,” the Hollywood Reporter quotes Cuse as saying. “We have a way that we’re going to be able to do that in the final season, too.”

The return of familiar faces — including the decidedly dead and presumed dead — will also come into play, with both Jeremy Davies and Elizabeth Mitchell set to reprise their roles as Faraday and Juliet. And based on the dramatic timing of Dominic Monaghan’s last-moment arrival on the dais, Charlie would seem a safe bet to (somehow) resurface as well.

“There’s a good chance you’ll be seeing many characters you haven’t seen since the first season,” said Lindelof.

Some tropes will be absent from Season 6. Time-travel is so yesterday, the producers indicated, and flashbacks/forwards are long gone. Instead, Lindelof said, “We’re going to do something different” to tell the final 18 hours’ worth of story.

Listening to the splendiferous LOST Unlocked podcast with Chris and Brian and/or Brian and Chris and

Listening to the splendiferous LOST Unlocked podcast with Chris and Brian and/or Brian and Chris and looking at a few message boards on the web, the question of ” What will be the title of the final LOST episode?” is being pondered and discussed.

I’m probably way off, but it is fun to think about what it might be. And I came up with this…

Standstill

Why that? At first, I thought what is considered one of the signature episodes of LOST from Season One, if not the entire series? According to a large segment of the fan base, this episode is attributed to what turned them into a card carrying LOST geek. I too considered what is going on with this character who was centric to the episode, especially in light of the cast poster for Season Six.

The episode is , of course, ” Walkabout”.
Just jokingly, I thought, what is the opposite, the “mirror image”, of that title? ” Standstill” .

But then I started thinking about what is a standstill. Here are a few things I found connected to this term.

According to Merriam- Webster dictionary , a standstill (noun) is : a state characterized by absence of motion or of progress ( emphasis mine) .

“It only ends once. Anything before that… is just progress.” – Jacob ” The Incident” , Season 5 Finale

But the resolution to that progress… creates a standstill.

Then I discovered that there is a business related term called a standstill agreement. This involves the staving off of one company from another , for an agreed period of time, during a hostile takeover. Hmmm…interesting.

Next, I found out about a medical procedure that is called a standstill operation. This is the slowing down of the vitals of a patient during very delicate operations, often involving the brain. The body is brought to a hibernetic state otherwise known as ” clinically dead” . Issues of life/death on LOST? Oh, that never comes up!

Investigating further, I stumbled upon an astronomical connection about a standstill involving the moon. This is a quote from Dr. Judith S.Brown, Department of Astronomy at the University of Massachusetts , Amherst, about standstill (From the above link).

“WHY THE TERM ‘STANDSTILL’ ?

“The monthly range of lunar Declination changes very little from 2005-2007 and also from 2023-2026. Also during this time, the monthly range of moonrise and moonset directions changes little. The fact of little change in the outer extremes of monthly range of rising and setting directions for ~3 years is what leads to the use of the term STANDSTILL.”

Well, to my surprise, when did this most recently occur? 2005 to 2007. The same three years our Losties were gone from the Island. There are also some things about Stonehenge and other solar/lunar “calendars” in the article ( Eight sides to the solar, four to the lunar) Are they connected? Anything have to do with Daniel’s experiment? Eh, could be. Again, very interesting.

Another word synonymous with “standstill”, in the thesaurus, is the word “stalemate’. It is a chess term that signifies an impasse in the game where neither player can “win” ( checkmate). I believe there’s been a nod or two to this classic board game on LOST.

And of course, it also means to halt, stop cessation. In other words : The End.

Well, that’s my crack at it. What about you? Have any ideas about what the final title of LOST might be? You can share them in comments and/or email me at bunnieshatch@aol.com. Thanks!

If we can’t live together we die alone (Eğer birlikte yaşayamazsak yalnız ölürüz). repliğidir. “Gelin birlik olalım” manasında söylediği bu cümleden beş dakika sonra, topluluğu satması ise Jack’in anlaşılamaz ruh halinin en güzel örneğidir.

James ”Sawyer” Ford – Every Man For Himself (Herkes kendi başına)

James ”Sawyer” Ford

Sayid Jarrah – I’m Sayid Jarrah and I’m A Torturer (Benim adım Sayid Jarrah ve ben bir işkenceciyim)

Sayid Jarrah

John Locke – Don’t Tell Me What I Can’t Do (Bana ne yapamayacağımı söyleyemezsin)

John Locke

Desmond Hume – See You In Another Life, Brother (Başka bir hayatta görüşürüz, kardeşim)

Desmond

Hugo ‘Hurley’ Reyes – Dude! (Ahbap!)

Hurley

Benjamin Linus – I always have a plan (Benim her zaman bir planım var)

Benjamin Linus

Kate Austen – So we can go? Off the island? That’s it? (Yani artık gidiyor muyuz? Adadan? Hepsi bu mu?)

Kate Austen

Juliet Burke – I love you so much! (Seni çok seviyorum!)

Juliet Burke

Juliet’in sessiz ve son derece kontrollü yapısı dizi boyunca sürse de 5. sezonun son anlarında kuyuya düşmek üzereyken, ondan beklenmeyecek derecede şiddetle Sawyer’a sevdiğini söylemesi dizinin en etkili anlarından biri sayılabilir.

Sun Kwon – You don’t know my father (Babamı tanımıyorsun)

Sun

Babası tanıdığımızda Sun’a hak veriririz.

Miles Straume – I can talk to the dead (Ölülerle konuşabiliyorum)

Miles Straume

Daniel Faraday – It doesn’t matter what we do. Whatever happened, happened. (Ne yaptığımız önemli değil, olan olmuştur.)

Daniel Faraday

Richard Alpert – My people need some kind of justice (Halkım adalet istiyor)

Richard Alpert

Charlotte Lewis – Don’t let them bring her back! No matter what, don’t let them bring her back! This place is death! (Onu geri getirme! Ne olursa olsun geri getirme! Burası ölüm kokuyor!)

Charlotte Lewis

Charlie Pace – I was a drug addict. I’m clean now. (Uyuşturucu bağımlısıydım. Artık temizim.)

Charlie

Claire Littleton – They hurt my baby! (Bebeğimi incittiler)

Claire Littleton

Michael Dawson – Waaaaaalt

Michael Dawson

İlk sezondan hatırlayacağımız Michael, devamlı kaybolan oğlunun ismini bağırmaktan gırtlak kanseri olup adaya veda etmiştir. Tabii ki bu bir spoiler değil. Ama eğer hala adadaysa, 5. sezonda gördüğümüz kadarıyla Walt’u yanlış yerlerde aradığına emin olabiliriz.

Shannon Rutherford – They think I’m worthless. (Herkes işe yaramaz olduğumu düşünüyor.)

Shannon

Boone Carlyle – Theresa falls up the stairs. Theresa falls down the stairs. (Theresa yukarıya, Theresa aşağıya)

Boone

Ana Lucia Cortez – Plane crash. Nice beach. She’s hot, you’re hot. It’s what people do. (Uçak düşer. Sahil güzel. O (Kate) seksi. Sen (Jack) seksisin. İnsanların yaptığı budur.)

Ana Lucia

Ana Lucia’nın Jack’le konuşurken, Kate’le seks yapıp yapmadığını sorduktan sonra söylediği diziyle ilgili bu enteresan yorumunu belirtmeden geçemeyeceğim. Kesinlikle dizide eksik olan noktaya parmak basmıştır.

Danielle Rousseau – You have only three choices: run, hide… or die.

Danielle Rousseau

Deli olduğunu sandığımız Fransız kadının bu söyledikleri, adadaki en akıllı insanlardan biri olduğunu gösterir niteliktedir.

Charles Widmore – I will win this war! (Bu savaşı kazanacağım!)

Charles Widmore

Büyük resmi görmemizi sağlayan karakterlerin başında gelen işadamı Charles Widmore, adada süregelen savaşı ne olursa olsun kazanacağını iddia etmektedir. Bakalım ada kimden yana olacak, göreceğiz.

It’s true. Penny and Desmond are the epic love story within the world of LOST (and one of the few where people don’t argue on whether or not they should be together). It’s hard not to cry whenever they’re together in an episode. But one of the greatest things about their relationship is that they both, on their own, are apart of a larger story and heroes in their own right. There are so many unanswered questions about both of them, so many interesting ways they or their past have been portrayed, and so many theories for their future. Those things build, so that whenever they actually are together, it’s an even grander scale then when they’re on their own.

Much credit goes to Sarah Samudre (who’s blog is listed in the column to the right) for inputting her theories, questions, and ideas about Penny and Desmond.

Let’s look first at Desmond. The man has done everything, been everything, and seemingly been everywhere. Consider it-he’s been a monk, almost an army doctor in the Royal Scots Brigade, and then an around-the-world sailor. He’s been portrayed to the audience as a villain when holding Locke and Kate at gunpoint, a crazy person after he thinks the computer has been destroyed, an anti-hero for what happened with Penny, and a hero for turning the key and resolving to find Penny. We’ve followed, in true LOST style, in some of the most excruciating moments of his life. We’ve seen him rejected by Widmore, lose his way in the time stream after the explosion in the Hatch, have flashes of the future, lose his way in the time stream again with Daniel Faraday at his side, and finally, finally reunite with Penny after the crash of the helicopter.

There is however, so much we don’t know about Desmond. For one, we’ve never seen his parents. Not once. No flashback of explanation, barely any present-time mentions-and in a show slightly obsessed with parents, that’s pretty big for a main character. Almost all of the other major characters have had some type of flashback explaining their parents, and the point of explaining their past and family has thus far been incredibly important to understanding a character’s motivations. The farthest back reference to Desmond’s past is him talking about having to care for his brothers in the absence of his father. Why don’t we know anything about Desmond, other than that he has brothers he took care of, brothers we never see, who are never even present in his life? Beyond Desmond’s involvement with his first fiance and subsequent involvement in a monastery, we never see anything beyond that. And again, with a show like LOST, the absence of a full explanation for a main character is big. The other major half-referred to clue about Desmond we have is his discharge from the army; we still have no clue what he did, what he refused to do, if I remember correctly.

There’s also a lot of half-references and a notably absent parent for Penny. We know for sure that Penny’s mother wasn’t Eloise Hawking-all we know is that was an off-island woman. That is (according to Ben) part of the reason Widmore was banished from the island. Like Desmond, Penny’s entire childhood is never seen, and barely even talked about. We do, however, know that Penny is ridiculously smart. She knew to set up a watch station somewhere in the north to track electromagnetic energy bursts. She somehow knew the radio frequency to the underwater Dharma station-how else would her call be waiting for Charlie to pick it up? She also believed Desmond and was ready for his call, after his second time-traveling adventure. And then finally, she had a boat ready, heading in their direction after the helicopter crashed and the island moved. We know Penny’s said to Desmond that enough money and will power can help you find anyone, but Penny seems to be holding more cards than just money and will power. How much did she know about the island?

Why is it we know so little about them? If they weren’t important to the coming part of the story, these unknown parts of their past would’ve been resolved already. Penny and Desmond are epic, not just in the popular turn of phrase, but mirror the classic figures of an epic. People have connected them to the story of Odysseus and his wife Penelope, who waited for her husband on the island of Ithaca while he struggled to return home (both also only have one son). There’s also a connection Charles Dickens’ novel Our Mutual Friend in which the protagonist is accidently presumed dead, and uses his status as such to re-enter society, disguised, to learn about his intended bride and the people who thought he was dead. Considering Desmond’s obsession with Charles Dickens novels, it’s worthwhile to note that in many of his books, there is a happy marriage of the main characters by the end. (I think all Lost fans are hoping for a similar happy end for Penny and Desmond.)

Eloise Hawking says to Penny in the hospital that her husband has been caught in a war, but considering everything that’s happened to both of them, I think it’s safe to assume they both have been caught for a while. I think it’s also safe to assume that their relationship is so great and moving, that it’s going to figure in an important way to the coming war over the Island. If Eloise is right and the Island isn’t done with Desmond (and I think most of us Losties are thinking she is), I don’t think Penny’s going to be keen on leaving his side if he has to go back. Penny, Desmond, and Charlie (their son), on the island.

Theories, anybody?

By Katelyn

Lately I have been realizing how much daddy issues play into the story line of Lost. Usually once a story line has been used you will never see it again but that is not the case with these daddy issues. These reoccurring plots are making me think that maybe they are of some importance.

Here are some of the daddy issues I’ve picked up on (in no particular order).

Kate Austen – Kate finds herself on Oceanic Flight 815 after being caught on the run in Australia for killing her step-father. Some time after killing her step-father she finds out that he was her actual biological father.

Kate blows up her father's house while he's inside.

Daniel Faraday – We found out late in season 5 that Daniel Faraday’s biological father is Charles Widmore, who is also the father of Penelope Widmore. While studying at Oxford, Daniel only knew of Widmore because of the research grants he received from him and of the offer he received to do research on this island. His mother is Eloise Hawking, who accidently shoots and kills Daniel in 1977 (her past and his future). I find it weird that Daniel shares neither of their last names, even though he was raised by his mother, and neither of their accents.

"He was my son too, Eloise."

James “Sawyer” Ford – James became a confidence man after being orphaned as a child when his father killed his mother, who had been conned for all their money, then himself. His mother had been conned by a man named Sawyer, which James adopts as his own name.

a young Sawyer hids under the bed while his father turns his gun on himself

Penelope Widmore – Penny is the daughter of Charles Widmore, one of the most dreaded character in the series. It became known that her father did not want her in a relationship with her one true love, Desmond Hume. After Mr. Widmore denied Desmond’s wish to marry Penny so he entered into Widmore’s sail boat race to prove himself worthy. Desmond then becomes shipwrecked and stuck on the island (which could be seen as Charles Widmore’s doing). Penny never gives up searching for him despite her father’s hatred of Desmond.

awwww true love! I'm jealous...

Jin-Soo Kwon – Jin’s daddy issues are simple… he is embarrassed of his past. Born to a prostitute who abandoned him as an infant and a fisherman, Jin dreamed of a way out of his social class. When he fell in love with Sun, a rich heiress, he disowned his father and claimed he was dead.

Jin visiting his father with news of his new bride

Sun-Hwa Kwon – I think the second scariest man to Charles Widmore is Sun’s father, known just as Mr. Paik. He is a hotel owner and the owner of a automobile manufactuer… oh yeah, and the Korean mob boss. Mr. Paik gives Jin a job and allows him to marry his daughter even though Jin is not up to their social standards. As repayment, Jin becomes Mr. Paik’s personal assistant and does his dirty work. It is because of this dirty work that Sun and Jin are on Oceanic Flight 815 on that fateful day. So when Jin doesn’t make it off the island Sun blames her father and therefor buys a majority share of her father’s company with her Oceanic settlement.

Sun breaking the news to her father that he now works for her

Benjamin Linus – I think the more we learn about Ben the more we start to feel sorry for the fellow. Ben was born off the island but after his mother died during childbirth his father, Roger Linus, takes a job in the Dharma Initiative. Once on the island his father starts drinking heavily and verbally abusing poor young Ben who then develops a hatred for the Initiative, later joins the “Hostiles” and becomes the man we all love to hate.

young Benjamin and his father being welcomed to the island by Horace

Alex Rousseau/Linus – Alex was born on the island after her mother Danielle Rousseau became shipwrecked during a scientific excursion–16 years before the Oceanic Flight 815 crash. After all of her fellow scientists died, Charles Widmore ordered Benjamin Linus and Ethan Rom to kill Danielle and her baby daughter. Instead, Ben neglected Widmore’s orders and kidnapped Alex and raised her as his own. Sixteen years later when some mercenaries sent by Widmore come to take Ben off the island, they take Alex hostage and threaten to kill her if Ben will not surrender himself. Of course, he refuses and she dies knowing her adopted father didn’t try to save her.

Alex moments before being killed because he "father" refused to save her

Claire Littleton – The only memory Claire had of her father was a lullaby he would sing to her as a child. Her mother had always told her he had died when she was young. But indecently her father is Christian Shephard, who she met shortly after her mother was hospitalized and in a coma. Christian is also Jack Shephard’s father who died just days before the plane crash but came back to life on the island. Oh, and did I mention she went awol and abandoned her newborn baby, Aaron, to hang out with Christian in some creepy cabin in the jungle?

a younger Claire and her real father

Jack Shephard – Jack has the most obvious daddy issues. His father, Christian Shephard, was a top surgeon and expected nothing less of Jack but to be the same. Even though he was the chief of surgery, Christian was an alcoholic. Jack turned him in for operating under the influence, which is when Christian flew to Australia (to visit his “other family” including Claire Littleton) and soon died. Jack was bringing his alcoholic father’s body home when Flight 815 crashed on the island. Soon after the crash, Jack started seeing Christian roaming around on the shore and in the jungle. And once he was home he began seeing Christian again–like sitting in his hospitals waiting room. This (plus his incredibly sad breakup with Kate) lead to Jack becoming drug addicted, alcoholic who attempts suicide. Like father like son?

Jack and Christian were always in disagreement

Hugo “Hurley” Reyes – As a child, Hurley was abandoned by his father for no apparent reason while they were restoring an old Camaro. Hurley’s belief that his father’s act of leaving was his fault caused him great sadness and self-doubt which in turn caused him to gain a great deal of weight. But surprise, surprise… his father returned home after hearing about Hurley’s $114m lottery win.

gold digger

and lastly…

Walt Lloyd – Walt is Michael Dawson’s son who was taken away by his mother, Susan, when Walt was a baby. First they move to Amsterdam, where Susan marries some guy, and then Rome, and finally to Australia where the new happy family decided to permanently call home. After a long custody battle, Susan’s husband, Brian Porter, became Walt’s legal guardian. To say the least, Walt gave Brian the creeps. So after Susan died when Walt was 10 years old, Brian begged for Michael to take Walt back. On the island, Michael and Walt had their ups and downs (I think he loved his dog, Vincent, more than his father) but ultimately Michael saved Walt and got them both off the island. Walt now lives in New York City–without his father. Michael became suicidal once leaving the island but after realizing it is impossible for him to kill himself (due to island magic) he agrees to go back to the island because it is the only way he can die and thus he leaves Walt once again.

a rare sight of happiness between the two

I’m sure there are probably more daddy issues among the rest of the characters. I guess we’ll have to wait for the sixth and final season of Lost to see what the flashbacks have in store.

(This is quite a bit longer than the first part. But once the theories start rolling around… it gets tougher to be brief. )

Origin of ” Five Seconds for Fear ” in next scene. It’s so funny how Jack acts like he thought of
it in the Pilot episode. It was Christian who told him how to handle the pressure. That if younger Shephard could not take Christian’s advice… Dad will just have to step in. No harm, no foul. Gives Jack a ” Hey, Kiddo” out in the hall, trying to take the edge off a tense situation. ( “Kiddo” is Christian’s favorite nickname for Jack, and others) Jack , who said he was initially humiliated by it, eventually relays the story as a much more singular and heroic tale later, to Kate. How big was that fish you caught, Dr. Jack?

Jack’s apollo bar is stuck . Jacob comes back to “assist” . ” I guess it just needed a little push “(the candy machine/ Jack by Christian?) says Jacob to Jack. It reminds me of the Desmond/Jack meeting at the stadium in MOSMOF, Season 2. ” Ya gotta lift it up….Your ankle!” ( another double meaning.)

From five seconds to five minutes…out in the jungle for James and Jack. Sawyer ” A man does what he does cuz he wants something for himself. What do you want?” One, Jack wants to fulfill what Locke was saying was his “destiny”. And two, to be with Kate. At least, that is what we are to assume from the slight affirmation when Sawyer mentions her name. Jack blurts out the phrase ” I lost her” but he says it’s too late, despite her being by the van. He never actually says it’s Kate. Maybe he is lamenting all the women in his life he lost : Kate, Sarah, Gabriella, Juliet, Bai Ling. Perhaps he realized there is nothing for him on the Island, just like there wasn’t anything for him in “real world”. But what the Losties are about to do, and what he has learned through this experience, might afford Jack a second chance.

Sawyer opens up about what happened to his parents… and subsequently, himself. (This is like the pre- raft launch “revelation” he gave to Jack about his own father, Christian. ) James explains that he had the opportunity for a second chance himself. Why didn’t he get on the sub and stop what happened? ” What’s done is done” same advice he was given at his folks funeral. For James, I think the Island was that second chance.

Ironically, they both have the same ” Done is done” outlook but polarizing solutions in what to do next.
Peace summit didn’t go so well. Jack and Sawyer fight….long time coming. Sawyer beating Jack is like Jack beating Ben in the Season 3 finale , ” Through the Looking Glass”. Sawyer is just as frustrated and confused about Jack wanting to blow up Jughead as Jack was over why he shouldn’t call the Freighter for rescue.

Juliet stops Sawyer from beating Jack into a fine powder, saying the doctor is right. That they have to do this. That she’s changed her mind. ( Does that ” It’s a woman’s prerogative” thing really still apply when deciding the fate of an H-bomb?)

Flashback to a tweenish Juliet and her older sister, Rachel, sitting on opposing sides of their parents in their living room. It is supposed to be The 80’s but the clothes and decor look a lot less “dated”. There is a book on the coffee table : “Mysteries of the Ancient Americas”, published by Reader’s Digest Association, 1986.
(Thank you, Scotty6, for the info). Probably some curious hints in that read.

Juliet is very upset that her parents are getting a divorce. Her mother tries to tell her that ” Just because you love someone doesn’t mean they’re supposed to be together.” This does not console young Juliet and she runs off. This phrase is a lot like Kate to Jack on Ajira 316 ” Just because we’re on the same plane doesn’t mean we’re together” . And it is this same reason Juliet gives James that their relationship can’t continue that she got from her parents and their impending split.

KC of the superb blog, ” LOST Tidbits” posted some intriguing screen shots from this scene, pointing out that Juliet’s father’s appearance is strikingly similar to Kate’s father, Wayne (albeit about a dozen years older) KC proposed that perhaps Juliet’s dad might have left Juliet’s mom for Diane Austen soon after this scene. This got me to theorizing. If this is true… then Kate and Juliet are half sisters. And the reason for Juliet “changing her mind” is because she believes that Sawyer doesn’t love her the way he loves Kate, after that glance over her way at Rose and Bernard’s cabana. And pointed out by Heath on our podcast ( The LOST Revisited Now) , Juliet was touching her stomach…possibly signifying that she was pregnant (and maybe that’s what Bernard noticed when he offered Juliet to stay for tea). Who knows? Maybe in this upcoming season, we’ll see a scene, like we saw of the DriveShaft ring, of some Dharma people cleaning out LeFleur’s house…and happening upon a positive pregnancy test ?

There has been much talk about how the story of Jacob from the Bible relates to LOST. Another aspect of it is that Jacob was in love with a beautiful girl named Rachel. He worked for 7 years for Rachel’s father to be able to marry her. ( Having to work for wife’s father also a part of The Kwons story) When the 7 years had passed, Jacob was allowed to marry Rachel… but he didn’t end up doing that. Rachel’s father, Laban got Jacob intoxicated prior to the nuptials and was joined in holy matrimony to her older sister, Leah. Jacob was so angry and sad at his new circumstances. He was deceived… but he did a little deceiving himself to his own brother. So, he agreed to work another 7 years to marry Rachel. And Jacob was able to do that…but then, he had to work for another 7 years after that for her father. Jacob, after 21 years was free of his father-in-law, became prosperous and added two new wives to the family. But it was still Rachel that he really loved.

Could what Juliet be feeling is like she is the “Leah” of the story? Sawyer loved Kate, he grew to love Juliet…but that look was all it took. ( And this applied to her relationship with Jack too) This would make Kate ” Rachel”. And if the screen shots are any indication, it’s more than figuratively. And for Juliet to have a sister named Rachel… well, maybe that’s just another clue, pointing to Juliet and Kate’s “connection”.
Is it true? Maybe not. Just a theory…for now.

Another point about Jacob and Juliet… we did not see them together. Is this a clue? Hmmm…

Radzinski and the Dharma crew at the site of the future home of the Swan Hatch. They just found the pocket of energy from drilling. Up walks Dr. Chang in his light colored jacket to reason with a dark jumpsuited Stewart about the dangers of trying to finish what they started at the Swan site. Pierre Chang tries to warn him “If we keep drilling and hit that pocket, all hell is going to break loose.” Remembering what Damon and Carlton said on the Season 2 extras that the hatch represents something along the lines of concentrated evil…. Pierre might be onto more with that statement than even he realizes.

Kate changes her mind too about setting off Jughead… and possibly her relationship with Jack. Her goal was supposed to be to find Claire and reunite her with her son, Aaron. Jack claims that detonating the H-bomb is the only way that can ever happen. Nothing in his life has felt so right as what they are about to do. Kate is concerned if they go back to pre- Flight 815, Claire might just give Aaron up for adoption. Jack says that they can’t be sure about that… but if Claire did, it would be her choice ( Jacob-like statement) . I wonder if this does actually work the way they think, perhaps Claire will give up Aaron for adoption to that nice couple in LA…and it will be Kate and Jack, only permanently this time?

Hurley is getting out of jail for the murders he did not commit… no matter how hard he tries to stay. This is very reminiscent of Desmond’s release from prison in Season 2’s finale, “Live Together, Die Alone”. Except instead of the dramatic implications of the possession of Desmond’s book ” Our Mutual Friend” by Charles Dickens being the last thing he ever reads before he dies… Hurley is issued back a cherry flavored Fruit Roll Up. ( Just …brilliant! )
Another nod to Des and LTDA, Hurley is met outside of the prison gates by someone. Charles Widmore was waiting for Desmond, with money for a bribe to leave his daughter, Penny. The other a box of Desmond’s letters to her. Hurley is seated in a cab with none other than Jacob. He assures Hugo that he is not crazy, that he himself ( Jacob) is not dead ( is he “alive” in an immortal sense?) and that he is should consider that he is not cursed…but blessed. Jacob touches Hurley before he exits the cab, leaving the guitar case that is wedged between them. ” It’s not my guitar” said Jacob. Does he mean it’s some one else’s guitar? Is it Jacob’s case but it doesn’t contain a guitar? Season 6 will let us know for sure.

Hurley is trying to reassure a dying Sayid that he’ll be ok once” Jack changes the future or the past…one of those”. Miles isn’t to sure. Jin is convinced Sayid will be fine ( I suspect he will be too somehow.) But Sayid is convinced nothing can save him, despite Jack’s telling him it will. I believe it is pretty clear that Sayid is talking about his soul more than his body. Sayid tells Jack that he rigged it so Jughead would go off on impact.

Back at the four toed statue, “Locke” is getting impatient and wants to speak to Jacob. Richard tells him that if he’d wait a little longer, he was sure that Jacob would eventually summon John. Well, that’s just not going to cut it.
Sun asks Ben if he knew what happened to the statue. He says that it was like that when he got here..but questions Sun about whether she believes him or not…and doesn’t expect her to…lol. ( It just hit me now that maybe he did have something to do with the statue falling apart. His answer ” It was like that when I got here”…almost like a kid trying to skirt blame when they know they were responsible for messing up the house or breaking something.)
Locke wants to bring Ben with him. Richard tries to tell him that this is a breech in protocol. Only the leader can have an audience with Jacob and there can only one leader at a time on the Island. ( Is Ben still considered a “leader” by the Others then?) Locke hands Ben the knife and promises that “things will change once Jacob is gone”. However, just because there is change…doesn’t always mean it’s for the better.

Speaking of the four toed statue, my good friend Donald from the hilarious and insightful ” Donald is LOST” podcast & blog, asked me recently to look at some screen caps of the statue. Were there any differences ? Guess what? There most definitely were. ( I had a feeling that Sayid making the statement about ” hiding in plain sight” would have more meaning. ) In Season Two, the foot was light in color and the base was deteriorating on one side…and the foot is a left foot. In Season Five, the statue was darker in color, the base was more intact…and it is a right foot. What is going on here? Scott, who does the art here for the site, suggested that if there are two sides, why not two statues : One for Jacob and one for his Enemy?

It’s 1977 again and Sawyer has shed the LeFleur alias as Miles points out what the Losties have been omitting from the discussion : That what they are all about to do may actually be The Incident?
Phil’s on his way to the Swan, most likely to kill Jack. The Losties decide to ” Live Together, Die Alone” and will act as the line of defense to make sure Jack carries out what appears to be their “destiny”.
Radzinski is glad to see Phil. Pierre is not. He thinks that they need to evacuate the area. Stewart will have no part in that. Then they get a glimpse of Jack on a mission… and the bullets start to fly between the Losties and Dharma. The Losties somehow get the upper hand, knock of Radzinski and grab Phil. Chang tries to stop the drill but something is pulling it down ( magnetism or fate?) Jack drops the bomb…and…nothing.
But all of a sudden, stuff starts flying around, drawn in by the pull ( much like in the Swan Hatch in LTDA)
Pierre’s arm gets caught, Miles frees him..but not without some severe injury ( Will he still lose the arm later?) Radzinsky awakens and tries to flee with some of his men in a jeep..to no avail…and they run. Phil is about to shot Sawyer…but instead gets shish kabobed by some metal poles.
Juliet is wrapped up in chains and dragged into the hole being drilled for the Swan. Sawyer, with the help of Kate, attempt to save Juliet. Sadly, the pull was too strong and she lets go of James’ hand and plunges to her death…or so we thought. ( Josh Holloway and Elizabeth Mitchell… Would someone please just give them some kind of award. ( IMO) Both are long overdue. )

Back at the beach, 2007, Ilana and the gang make an appearance. She asks “Ricardus” what lies in the shadow of the statue… and he knows! The answer is in Latin. I’ve read ” He who will protect us all” , ” He who serves us all” and ” He who liberates us all” and ” He who will save us all” . Sayid spoke of nothing can save him. Charlie back in Season One said that if there was anyone who could save them all (on the Island) it was John Locke. I heard this theory from a contributor to the fantastic and funny LOST Unlocked podcast with Chris and Brian. After Ilana shows Richard was is in the metal crate… John Locke’s body dumped out on the beach, he is …lying ( laying) in the shadow of the statue. Does it point to John Locke…the real one…still going to “save” them all? Perhaps Jack is right about not giving up on John?

It is then that Sun wonders aloud if that is Locke on the ground…who is that in the statue? Why it’s Jacob’s Enemy…loophole found. Jacob is sitting in a rocking chair like the one from the Cabin ( Christian sat in as well), speaking about how making the “thread” is the hardest part of the tapestry. Thread… Is this pointing back to the string/street time theory that Daniel was talking about in Season 5’s first episode, “Because You Left”? “Locke” and Jacob exchange “pleasantries” as Ben slowly approaches. Mr. Linus is distraught at how for 35 years, he did what he was told, sight unseen. Well, what was so wrong with him? Why is Locke, a virtual stranger to the Island, in Ben’s eyes, given the privilege of Jacob’s company ” as if he were Moses!” It is very likely Jacob knew why Ben was there and what he was about to do. But he told him that he had the choice to either listen to “Locke” or not. After Ben’s ” What About Me” speech and a ” What about you” right back from Jacob, Ben chooses death…stabbing Jacob in the heart, with “Locke” finishing the job, kicking his lifeless body into the fire. But not before Jacob informs him ” They’re coming”. Who? The Losties from 1977? Ilana’s team and The Hostiles? Those who are like them that are even scarier, like was spoken of on the way to Jacob’s cabin? And was Ben playing the “Judas” role, spurred on by “Locke” in their earlier conversation about what “Jacob” didn’t do for Mr. Linus, despite his loyal service…fueled by Ben’s resentment of his own biased perception of the way thing should have gone i.e. Ben coming into power?

I alluded to this in the first part of the review. That there were other biblical connections. That scene on the beach , between Jacob and his enemy, is much like the dialog of God and Satan in the first chapter of the book of Job. The devil claims that man is pretty much corrupt and will always do wrong. God offers up Job’s name as an example of a “perfect” or righteous , man. The devil accuses, saying that Job is only faithful because of God’s kindness towards him. If God allowed Satan to ruin all that he has, including his health just short of death, he would curse God. God makes room for the devil to do what he chooses to Job’s life : Poverty, deaths of children, cattle, lose of home, sickness in his body, etc. Long story short, God was correct. Job remained faithful. And in turn, Job got back more than what he lost.

The mention of Moses by Ben also got me to thinking about something else. In the Old Testament, it says that Moses died when he went into the mountains alone at the age of 120. However, no body was ever found. In the New Testament, there is a passage in the book of Jude ( Jude 1:9) that states that the archangel Michael and Satan fought ( or strong petition before God) for control for the body of Moses. It probably was so that Moses’ remains would not become something to be worshiped like an idol for the Israelite people. But I wonder if it was also so the devil could not possess it , making Moses appear resurrected, and deceive the nation, as well? Is this what we are seeing with the “Locke” we met in this episode, a “possession” of John’s identity?

In LOST, it seems like they are borrowing from both of these stories. So, is this symbolic of the battle between God and the Devil? Between the archangel and the fallen angel? Neither? An amalgamation of the two accounts with players that are merely depicted as “dark” and “light”? Are Jacob and his enemy more akin to something found in Egyptology, like Set and Horus ? Roman ( Latin code words) or Greek mythology ( Inscription on the tapestry) ? Is it just some new brand of symbolism, introduced by the writers who’ve been “inspired” by these themes ? None of the above? Season Six… why aren’t you here yet?!

In an April 21, 2009 interview with Variety ( I found linked at Izi’s outstanding blog, “Not Confused, Just LOST” ) this is a quote from Darlton that gives us ” The Short List” on “research materials” to help us in our quest for ” What is going on?!” … i.e. some of their biggest “influences” in writing LOST.

” ( Carlton Cuse) For both Damon and me Stephen King’s “The Stand” was the most influential model for “Lost.” Because “Lost” is not the tenth carbon copy of a medical, legal or cop show there wasn’t a clear roadmap for how to make it work for 100 episodes by looking at other TV shows. So instead we turned to “The Stand,” a 1,000-page novel with a high-concept idea at the core: most of the world’s inhabitants have been killed by a super flu. What we loved about the book was that what sustains the 1,000 pages is not the mythology of the super flu but the stories of the characters. The mystery of what was happening on this island had to be secondary to the mystery of “who are these people?” In terms of creative inspiration we owe a debt to many other sources: the Bible, “Twin Peaks,” “The Prisoner,” the Narnia Chronicles, and of course “Star Wars” and all of its mythological antecedents, Kurt Vonnegut and Flannery O’Connor.”

And last but by no means least, Jack and Kate try to extract a grieving and broken Sawyer away from the hole as more debris flies into it. Surprisingly, Juliet, though bloody and pinned beneath heavy wreckage, she rolls over and sees the unexploded Jughead. With what little strength she has left, picks up a rock to try and set it off ( hitting it 8 times). In what I like to refer to as the ” Jaws” style ending , like Brody shooting at the shark’s mouth to blow up the oxygen tank/ similar phrase spoke by both the Chief and Juliet right before the explosion… the screen fades to white…and the LOST logo inverts.

Did Jughead do what it was supposed to? Are they in 2004 at LAX? Another parallel time line? Did they all just die, with the rest of the story told in flashbacks? Will we come back, Season 6, to a paint covered Desmond?

Whatever the answer ( and I am in tremendous anticipation to find out) … Bravo, LOST! Thank you Team Darlton for another amazing season.

Each of the last five years, the night of the season finale of “LOST” has brought me both excitement and disappointment.

Excitement, to see how the writers and producers of the show stretch the mythology of The Island and the characters that inhabit it.

Disappointment because, after the finale, it will be several months until the best show on television is back on.

The fifth season of “LOST” has been memorable, but needs to go out with a bang, I think. And based on the show’s title “The Incident,” one would think that viewers will witness an important and possibly violent event that affects The Dharma Initiative and The Island.

Before you read on, I don’t have a lot of spoilers or inside information about the season five finale. I’m a fan of the show, but I have no connections. I read some things here and there, but have stayed away from learning too much about this year’s finale. For full disclosure, here’s what I do know:

–an actor has been cast to play the role of “Jacob,” the much-discussed Island entity that The Others seem to answer to.

–a main character will supposedly die.

–viewers will see some of the main characters as children in flashbacks. I don’t know which ones, nor do I want to know.

–Juliet, Kate and Sawyer, last seen on a submarine headed off The Island, find their way back onto The Island for the finale.

–Rose and Bernard, absent for much of season five, return in some capacity. It’s not known if it’s on The Island or in a flashback (or flash forward, or flash sideways) of some kind.

Besides these tidbits, I go into the finale blind, and the predictions below will probably reflect that. If I get even one of these right, I’ll be surprised. Anyway, here goes:

1) Whatever happened, happens, because Destiny Calls

If you follow the show, you know what I mean. The tagline for the show’s season premiere was “Destiny Calls.” The Oceanic 6, exempting Turniphead Aaron, made their way back to The Island, using Eloise Hawking’s Window of Opportunity. Destiny Called, and she answered.

Everything that happened so far this season was meant to happen.

It is unknown what The Incident, actually is. It could be physical warfare between The Others and The Dharma Initiative. It could be Jack, Sayid, Eloise and Richard Alpert detonating Jughead. There’s no way of knowing. But whatever happened before will happen again. The event will not change, despite the best laid plans of Jack and Co., and whatever happens to everyone on The Island was meant to happen.

2) Desmond will return and set things right, by dying.

We’ve not seen the last of Desmond Hume, mark my words. He can see the future. He has time-jumped. He is (or was?) Daniel Faraday’s constant. In fact, Faraday believes Desmond is the exception to the rule that the future can not be changed. I believe Desmond will get back to The Island for the finale.

This season, viewers saw the early stages of The Hatch, as the Dharma Initiative was building it in 1977. It was Desmond who turned the emergency key that imploded The Hatch in season 2. It was Desmond being away from his post that caused Oceanic 815 to crash.

If Jack’s group is unsuccessful at changing the course of the future, Desmond could take it upon himself to change the course of history by sacrificing himself. If he’s not there to flee his post, Oceanic 815 may not crash, The Hatch may not implode, etc. Plus, it gives new weight to Desmond’s famous saying, “See you in another life, brothah.”

3) Jacob was a man, and is now a spirit. A spirit that will inhabit the body of John Locke.

It’s a little kooky, I know. But there has to be a reason why we’ve heard of Jacob for three seasons now, but have yet to see him.

I know the producers of the show have cast an actor to play the role of Jacob, but perhaps he will only appear in flashbacks. This would be a great curveball, preserving the mythology of Jacob as a spirit, while explaining why the role was cast.

Since returning to The Island, John Locke is a changed man. Benjamin Linus and Richard Alpert have both taken notice. Locke seems more in tune with The Island than ever. Perhaps Jacob the Holy Spirit is looking for a resurrected body to inhabit and resume a more physical role of leader of The Others? Locke fits the bill.

4) Once The Incident happens, memories will be wiped clean.

I envision a scenario where the final few minutes of season five shows us Jack waking up on The Island, unaware of where he is, or how he got there. He gets up, looks around, and finds that he is not alone. He sees several men and women around him, characters we as viewers are familiar with of course, but he doesn’t know who they are.

This would, of course, lead right into season six, where the Oceanic 815 survivors and The Others are now one in the same, in a time unknown to us or them, where the famous four-toed statue is in full view. Jack and all these familiar (to us) faces, become The Island’s natives.

Crazy scenario, I know. But, if there is a change in time, one would think it would affect memories, no?

Last one, I promise:

5) Characters who, to this point, have shown no ulterior motives, will have been on one side (or another) of the war between Ben Linus and Charles Widmore

I’m thinking of folks like Richard Alpert and Hurley specifically. Alpert has never tipped his hand. He is loyal to Jacob, that much we know. But he knows The Others. He knows Widmore. He knows Ben. Somewhere along the way, he had to have developed an alleigance of some kind.

Hurley wanted no part of going back to The Island, but seemed to be a willing participant when he boarded the Ajira flight to Guam and bought nearly 100 extra seats to keep innocents off the flight, knowing full well where the plane was really headed. Somone must have gotten Hurley to believe that going back was in his best interests somehow.

Perhaps it was someone from Widmore’s camp, since Hurley seemed dead set against having anything to do with Ben. Or, perhaps Hurley has been loyal to Ben for some time, and has conned his friends (and us viewers) all season long. Either way, Hurley’s there for a reason, and it’s not to re-write the script to “The Empire Strikes Back.” We’ll find out why.

That’s what I think could happen in the finale of “LOST.” Feel free to share your thoughts.

Dan forgets the Constants and focuses on the Variables in LOST’s 100th episode, #14 of this season: The Variable

“I thought I couldn’t change things, but maybe I can.”

Dan’s Flashbacks

Playing Chopin with a metronome doesn’t make much sense, but I suppose that’s the least of my worries when trying to make sense of this show. Dan’s mom – Eloise – breaks it to him that he has to quit piano to spend more time with his fabulous brain. She tells him it is her “job” to keep him on his path. Now, of course, we know she wasn’t upset because she was forcing Dan to quit the piano.

We get to see Theresa in a non-coma state at Dan’s graduation; but mom quickly nixes any further screen time, she wants Dan all to herself. She gives Dan his famous journal, and discourages him from seeing Theresa, or any women because ultimately they will be hurt (nice foreshadowing. I mean flashbacking. I mean, oh whatever). She looks surprised when she learns Dan’s research grant is from Widmore, but shakes it off like a pro.

Skip to a damaged Dan, watching the alleged 815 at the bottom of the ocean – we’ve seen this scene before, but not the whole thing. Dan’s upset at the news broadcast, but he doesn’t know why. He’s visited by Widmore, and an embarrassed Dan apologizes for not remembering him, he has a condition with his memory. Widmore encourages Dan to go to the Island, reassuring him that the crashed plane on the news is a fake. The Island will heal him, and his gifts are too tremendous to waste.

Dan’s mom visits soon after, also encouraging him to go to the Island. Have Widmore and Hawking been communicating? Does Widmore know that Eloise will shoot and kill her son? Dan decides to go to the Island to make his mom proud of him.

1977

Dan has come back from DI HQ because he saw the picture of the Dharma New Recruits with Hurley, Jack and Kate in the picture. Dan immediately goes to Jack (he must not have gotten the memo that Sawyer is the new sheriff in town), and demands to know how they got back to the Island. Jack actually utters the word Destiny without flinching or cringing. Too bad Mrs. Hawking was wrong: they don’t belong there, according to Dan.

Scare the Losties, check.

Miles takes Dan to the Orchid station, where Dan (who seems to be consulting his journal for everything) knows the exact time that Dr. Chang will show. Then, suddenly, we are watching the season premiere again. Dan tries to convince Chang to evacuate everyone on the Island – he’s from the future, he knows. Come on, Chang. Miles tries to intervene, I guess he doesn’t want the awkward so you are my son talk, and Chang brushes Dan off, even after Dan spills the Daddy beans.

Try to convince Chang to evacuate, check.

“You guys were in 1954? Like .. Fonzie times?”

Jack, Juliet, and Sawyer try to figure out how to deal with Phil the Hostage, and are joined by Hurley, Jin, and Kate. Sawyer’s two options: leave via sub, start over at square one. Dan and Miles join the party (“nice to see ya again, Twitchy, pound cake and punch in the kitchen”), and Dan tries to get them to lead him to the Others. His mother (“Ellie, you met her in 54″) is there, Dan explains, and she is the only one who can steer them back to where they belong. Jack is all for it, reciting again how they don’t belong. Jack circumvents Sawyer’s authority by going to Kate for help. Sawyer slips by invoking the old “Freckles” nickname, which is the nail in Juliet’s coffin. She gives Kate the code key for the sonic fence (“it’s over for us here, anyway”), and Jack, Kate, and Dan head to the Others. Jin (not leaving because Sun might be … somewhere), Hurley (not leaving because it seems wishy washy), Miles (not leaving because he just met his dad), and Sawyer and Juliet (not leaving because they feel they are already home) start packing for the beach.

Get directions to mom, check.

“There’s no turning back now.”

Jack and Kate gun up, and Dan convinces a young Charlotte she needs to evacuate and never come back. They are sidetracked by Radzinsky and co., and have a gunfight. They make it to the sonic fence. Jack cleans Dan up, and Dan explains to the doc that this is their present, “we shouldn’t be naive to think nothing can happen to us. Any one of us could die.” Thanks for foreshadowing your own death, Dan. We appreciate it. Dan continues to explain things to Kate and Jack: There will be an incident at the Swan station in a few hours, the workers will tap into a great electromagnetic energy that will cause the DI to cement things in, and push a button every 108 minutes so the energy will be contained. When Desmond fails to push the button in the hatch, flight 815 crashes, and so on. That chain of events will start this afternoon, he says. Dan thought he couldn’t change things, put he was focused on the Constants, forgetting about the Variables: people with free will. The variables can change their destiny. Dan plans to destroy the future hatch by detonating Jughead and preventing their current time line from happening.

Convince everyone I’m right, check.

“You always knew this was going to happen, but you sent me here anyway.”

Dan charges into the Others’ camp, looking for Eloise, and demanding Alpert to tell him where the bomb is; the bomb he told them to bury many years ago. Before Alpert can put down his tin cup, Eloise kills Dan. Great death scene! So sad.

Change time and space? Fail.

“For the first time, I don’t know what will happen next.”

Oh yeah, Desmond. I suppose I thought Des was indestructible, didn’t realize Ben’s gun did that much damage. While Penny is pacing the hospital waiting room, Hawking introduces herself. (Is Hawking Penny’s mother, too?) She feels responsible for Desmond, putting these chain of events in motion by sending Dan back to the Island. She has always had some kind of knowing what would happen, but that has changed for her.

We confirm that Widmore is Dan’s father. He spouts off to Hawking about the sacrifices he’s had to make, especially his relationship with daughter, Penny. Hawking spits back, ‘don’t talk to me about sacrifice!’ She sent Dan to the Island knowing she would kill him.

Questions

Why are the Others, who are supposed to be peaceful, so violent? Why would Eloise shoot a man in the back?

How does Dan know exactly when everything will happen? Why does he know Chang will be at the Orchid station, and when the Incident will occur?

What is Eloise’s motivation for sending Dan to his death on the Island? Does she believe by sending Dan back he’ll be able to change everything? Or does she know that his Destiny cannot be altered, even as a Variable?

For me, the big question going into this episode was which leader was being referred to in the title

For me, the big question going into this episode was which leader was being referred to in the title. After watching, I suppose some could argue the answer is Jack, but I’m going to have say with complete confidence that it’s John Locke.

The episode opened with another look at Daniel Faraday’s shooting, this time from Jack & Kate’s perspective. Kate prevents Jack from rushing to Daniel’s aid, then Jack is promptly crushed in the face with the butt of young Charles Widmore’s rifle. When Widmore enters camp and asks Richard Alpert what happened, he says that “Eloise…reacted.” Eloise then instructs that Jack and Kate should be put in her tent, and that they aren’t from the Dharma Initiative.

Forward to ‘07 and Richard Alpert is in his tent on the beach, building a ship in a bottle, when John Locke arrives at the camp bearing a boar on his shoulders. Locke says, “I brought dinner,” and Richard remarks that something is different about John. “I have a purpose now.” is the only response John gives. When Richard asks why Ben is back too, Locke just says that he helped him get back. Locke then tells Richard they need to take a trip into the jungle for an errand, then they need to visit Jacob. Away from that conversation, Sun is asking Ben who Richard is. Ben tells her Richard is ‘a kind of advisor’ and that ‘he’s had that job for a very, very long time’. Sun interrupts Locke’s conversation with Richard to asks about the picture of the ‘77 Dharma folks–Richard tells her he remembers them because he watched them all die. [LOST]

Richard approaches Locke and says he’s ready to go, so Locke invites Ben to join them. Ben gives Locke a typical smartass response, “What’s the matter, afraid I’ll stage a coup?” but Locke just says he’s not afraid of anything Ben can do anymore.

Back in ‘77, Jack is trying to convince Kate to help him follow through on Faraday’s plan to ’set things right’ but Kate isn’t on board. Eloise then comes back and explains to Jack about how she saw Daniel on the island in 1954, which gives Jack enough trust for him to explain the plan to detonate Jughead. Jack plays on Eloise’s guilt about killing Daniel just enough, so she agrees to help and explains that Jughead is buried underneath Dharmaville. I guess that explains Ben’s secret tunnel, since apparently The Others have had tunnels in that part of the island for at least 20 years.

Cut to the Dharma security bunker, and Radzinski beating the shit out of Sawyer. Horace is being his hippie self and objective to the brutality, but Radzinski basically tells him to grow a pair. Security Phil lends a hand with the a/v part of the interrogation and plays the tape of Kate walking into the jungle. (Is it just me, or did this tape look a lot like the old blurry Sasquatch video we’ve all seen a million times? – Check out the recap video about 2 minutes in to see what I mean.) Sawyer doesn’t offer any information, so Phil decides to seal his fate by sucker-punching Juliet. The tactic works, but I think we all know now it’s only a matter of time before Phil gets destroyed by Sawyer. While reviewing evidence, the security team also notices the three names that were added to the sub manifest at the last minute, and wonder who this Hugo Reyes guy is. Cut to Hurley packing up some Dharma rations and making a not-so-subtle dash for the jungle, only to be trailed by Dr. Chang. When Chang confronts Hurley, Jin, and Miles, we are treated to the only real comic moment of the episode as Hurley fails Chang’s history exam miserably and has to admit he’s from the future. This causes Chang to asks Miles again if he is his father, to which Miles simply says, “Yeah, it’s true.” The guys then remind Chang of the importance of evacuating the island.

Back at Camp Other, Jack and Kate ask Richard about the whole Eloise/Charles dynamic to which he replies, “Let’s just say, love can be complicated.”

To ‘07 and Richard, Ben, and Locke have reached the clearing where the Nigerian plane wreckage lies. Locke coaches Richard on how to save the man who is about to come into the clearing as well as what to say to him. Just then, we see time-skipping John Locke come stumbling into the clearing from the other side. Richard is confused, but follows Locke’s instructions and enters the clearing. Meanwhile, Ben is awestruck at John’s ability to pick out the exact moment in time to be at the clearing. When Richard returns from his errand, he tells Locke he’s glad he didn’t have to die after all. Locke then tells Richard he did die, and that Ben killed him. This is the first time I can remember Richard looking surprised at anything.

Chang arrives at the Dharma security bunker in ‘77 and warns the gang about the impending disaster. Sawyer chimes and validates Chang’s theory and recommends they put all the women and children on the sub. He then says they should put him and Juliet on the sub as well. Radzinski agrees as long as Sawyer will draw a map to the hostiles. Speaking of–we cut to Eloise, Richard, Jack and Kate arriving at a pond, which Eloise explains is the entrance to the tunnels. When Kate decides to bail, the two Other goons who are on the trip take aim and threaten to shoot. We get a close-up of Kate’s face as a shot rings out–it’s the same look Faraday had last week, but when the camera backs out we see that it’s one of the goons who has been shot by none other than Sayid! Eloise then explains the plan to Richard while Kate and Jack catch Sayid up. This includes Kate bursting Sayid’s bubble by telling him that he wasn’t successful at killing young Ben.

Jin, Miles, and Hurley are watching people board the sub, which allows Miles to see his father being a dick to his mother while trying to convince her to leave. This is the moment we have expected for several weeks where Miles realizes his father loves him after all. Sawyer and Juliet climb aboard and Sawyer says good riddance to the island.

Richard takes a swim and leads Jack, Eloise, and Sayid into the tunnel which is apparently the same network of tunnels that Ben fell into from the temple. We also see a bit of sarcasm from Richard when Jack asks if they got the bomb in through the pool–he tells Jack no, they didn’t get the 12 foot, 40,000 pound nuke in through the pool.

‘07 Richard tells Locke they can leave to see Jacob in the morning, and Locke is disappointed. Locke decides to address the entire group–he proceeds to cast a large amount of doubt about Jacob’s existence, then invites the entire group to come with him and Richard to see Jacob in person. Off to the side, Richard and Ben share a moment:

Richard: “I’m starting to think John Locke is going to be trouble.”

Ben: “Why do you think I tried to kill him?”

It seems obvious to me that even Richard, the ancient and wise adviser is really not sure what lies ahead at this point. He has seemed very much in control every other time we’ve seen him, but this ‘07 Richard has now been surprised twice in the same day by John Locke.

On the sub in ‘77, Juliet tells Sawyer she loves him, and he says he ‘loves her back’. He barely finishes when who joins them on the sub but none other than third wheel Kate! In the tunnels below Dharmaville, Jack explains to Sayid that he trusts Young Eloise because Old Eloise is the one who told them how to get back to the island. When they arrive at Jughead, they simply say, “Well, now what?”

Daybreak in ‘07 shows The Others marching down the beach on their way to see Jacob. Ben tries to explain to Locke that Richard is concerned. Locke explains to Ben that he has no intention of using Jacob to find the rest of the Oceanic gang. In fact, he plans to kill Jacob. LOST.

I only saw one leader in this episode. It certainly wasn’t Horace, and Radzinski isn’t leading, he’s just being paranoid. Chang isn’t leading, he’s just doing what others have told him to do. Richard isn’t leading in either time period, and Eloise is just carrying on someone else’s mission. I don’t think Jack is leading either–he’s just doing exactly what Sawyer accused him of always doing–reacting. If Eloise sent her own son back knowing she would kill him, why does Jack think she sent him back for any better fate? Locke is the only one who has established himself as a true leader, carrying out his own plan and bringing a group of followers along for the ride. And after this episode, I think I’m one of them.
