‘Just A Beautiful Day’ features a cloud-parting chorus and is sure to be an instant favorite among fans. A video for the song is set to be shot in New York in early September. Directing will be the Diamond Bros. who were responsible for all three music videos done for the previous album and who also were behind the band’s recently released DVD documentary, Bring On The Mountain.

SOUNDWAVE FESTIVAL LINE UP ANNOUNCED!

After a few months of rumors and self confirmations, Soundwave organiser AJ Maddah has finally released the first bands confirmed for this year’s festival and there are some big names – check them out!

In it were a couple of DVDs and a t-shirt Danko Jones‘ record label so thoughtfully sent me.

Last year, I did a lengthy interview and editorial on the Rock band. To get what I needed for the story, I also photographed their shows in San Diego, Hollywood, and San Francisco, CA. One of the photos from their show at Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco was featured in the “Bring on the Mountain” DVD booklet. I look forward to watching the videos and documentary soon, as well as seeing the guys again when their new album releases in two months.

Oh! Danko Jones also has a book coming out in the future. Stay tuned to see which Outer Focus Photos images are included in the Danko Jones story. And, of course, do buy a copy if you’re into reading music and artist biographies.

New Album ‘Rock and Roll is Black and Blue’ to be Released in North America on October 9, 2012

Danko, the moniker behind Canadian rock group DANKO JONES, will take the Headbanger’s Stage at WACKEN FESTIVAL on August 1st and 2nd to perform his first spoken word shows in over seven years—his last offering of the like being his spoken word album, The Magical World of Rock, released in 2004. Danko has unveiled that the subject matter of these lectures will be none other than his favorite band in the world, KISS. The spoken word shows will come complete with slide shows and video footage.

The August 1st show will begin at 12:30pm and on August 2nd at 12:10pm on the Headbanger’s Stage.

“It’s been seven years since I’ve stepped onstage to do spoken word. In that time I’ve wondered what there was worth speaking about,” states Danko. “I’m stepping on the WACKEN stage to talk about my one burning passion that has consumed me for my entire life. Come and listen to my confession.”

Over the course of six full-length albums, DANKO JONES has forged a singular sound that draws equally from the blues, ‘60s garage, ‘70s hard rock, ‘80s hardcore, punky power-pop, Scandinavian metal, and classic stand-up comedy records without ever being fully defined by any of those sources. But while built from the same rudiments, each DANKO JONES record possesses a distinct sonic identity. Born A Lion (2002) brought the boogie and sledgehammer soul; We Sweat Blood (2003) was, by contrast, more anxious and aggro. Sleep Is the Enemy (2006) wielded the sharpest hooks. Never Too Loud (2008) was as slick as Below the Belt (2010) was stripped-down. But, compared to all that’s come before, Rock And Roll Is Black And Blue is, hands down, the most emotional and, as a result, the most epic DANKO JONES album to date.

Now, don’t be scared off by those E-words – there’s not a children’s choir, orchestra or piano ballad to be found within a 500-mile radius of this album. But what you hear on Rock and Roll is Black and Blue is the DANKO JONES ideal blown up to skyscraping proportions, resulting in 13 tracks that are bolder, brasher, and brawnier than anything they’ve attempted before.

Seems like every band has a documentary about them these days. Some of them are riveting and some of them are just merely lame promo videos. But, lately it seems like efforts from everybody like Foo Fighters to Kings of Leon to Lemmy have produced fascinating looks into the lives and trappings of being in a band.
Well, add Danko Jones to the list of must see DVD’s. (check out a preview here). We here at PMM got a special preview and fell in love with the doc and Danko Jones’ music.
Bring on the Mountain keeps your attention from beginning to end and has some truly introspective and honest moments.
How Danko Jones built their rep and tackled the business really will take you aback, especially the way things happen on the fast and furious track of social media today. Artistic differences, producer problems, collaboraters, tours all over the world, studio shots, lyrical insight, Spinal Tap moments, every element one craves for in a visual history of a band is there. One of our favorite quotes has to be, “We’ll leave the saving the world to Bono” when talking about how they just want to rock and entertain. It’s amazing that DJ has the amount of video archives to draw from over their 15 year career. We cannot stress enough how much you need to check the doc out.

DANKO JONES recently wrapped up recording a new album at Noble Street Studios in their hometown of Toronto, ON with producer Matt DeMatteo, and is currently in Vancouver working on the final mixes with engineer Mike Fraser. The currently untitled album is expected to be released early fall 2012.

The Ballad of Danko Jones

The Diamond Brothers directed the “Below the Belt” music video trilogy for Danko Jones, and then re-purposed that footage to create this short film.  Ralph Macchio and Elijah Wood as the bad guys.  Plus Selma Blair, Lemmy Kilmister, Mike Watt, Don Jamieson, Jena Malone, Frank Drank, Art Hsu and Jason Trost. Bring on the Mountain (World Premiere)

As NXNE Film Festival director said in his introduction, this is a rare documentary about a band that has succeeded.  As I watched the film I was struck by two things: the sheer charisma of lead singer Danko Jones and the sheer popularity of this band outside of Canada.  We are talking jam packed stadiums here. These guys have opened for the Rolling Stones, and toured with Guns ‘n Roses and Motley Crue and Danko has been up on stage performing with Lemmy and Motorhead.  These guys are living the rock ‘n roll dream.

Five drummers, one detached retina and 16 years later Danko Jones are still rocking out – and they still refuse to record what has become their live anthem, “Bring on the Mountain”.  Bring on the Mountain is a comprehensive document about the ongoing evolution of an enduring band.  Essential viewing for budding rock acts everywhere.

Ever have a moment where you hear about an artist that you’re like “…I have to check them out, they sound so cool!” but then proceed to totally forget about them? That’s what happened the other day when I was listening to CBC Radio 3 (I believe) and something about Cookie Duster was mentioned, perhaps even interviewed or played. This is literally so vague in my mind that only the weirdly unforgettable band name made the slightest residue in my memory.

In any case, when I was exploring a little online about Canadian music the other night in my lonely hotel room in Switzerland (long story, no time to explain, just know that I am homesick for Canadian music) I came across them again and immediately Googled them before they slipped away from me, and I am so glad I did! With members from Broken Social Scene (Brendan Canning) and Danko Jones (Mango Kid), this is a resurrection band on its second life, and their musical history gives them what I think is an awesomely fun and 90′s garage sound… pretty much what I imagine they started as, but now with a cool video. Note: A cookie duster is a mustache that is cut straight-across horizontally, and is the perfect length that it brushes (dusts) the top of a cookie when bitten into by the wearer / eater.
