Today I went to my second Tokyo CGM night located at shibuya’s Cospa head office.

Spotted two girls from Da Capo Series once we entered the room.

Actually I didn’t know about this event until yesterday night. When I SMS Lester about University’s document and then he suddenly told me about it.

We firstly mistaken the location for this time’s CGM night and we went to Akihabara and found out that it’s not there. How lame we are=.= Then we finally arrived at the head office at around 8.30 p.m. (the event started at 7.30 p.m.) We missed the chance to eat dinner together with everybody and introduction about Cospa by Danny Choo. (Gosh! I missed his talk again!!)

But well, the event turned out to be really successful. They planned to limit to only 50 people but the event ended up having about 70+ people. It’s getting really hot there due to the overpacking with people.

Once again we got to see Danny Choo’s Nanoha’s on Danny-Choo’s Uniform.

Today we got to see lots’s of cosplayer around the world.(err… Some of them is from outside of Japan) we got to see girls from Da Capo, Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee from Macross frontier series, Mirai Haruka from Danny Choo.com and much much more.

I got to meet Chris Gaunt, Jonny Li, Danny Choo, Kurot-san and lots more too. ^^ It’s really good that I got to come to such a gathering of great people around. Also see some Famous Japanese Cosplayer like Kaname and Leon.

Actually This is only the second time I going to CGM Night and I don’t really know what to do with so many people around doing talking…. But luckily, a girl suddenly talk with me and then I started to get blent into the atmosphere and continue to talk on with lots of other people afterward.

With the laughter and chit chat, we managed to pass the time until 10.00 p.m. The event suppose to ended at 9.30 p.m. ^^ And so the organizer have no idea but to let Danny out and trying to persuade us to leave ^^

This time I really got to know lots of people especially those Cosplayer from Japan. It also quite special that only me and Lester are still student. The other participant are mostly businessman. It’s really good to be able to talking with people who are older/experienced than you.

The only things I not satisfy about is that the Indian Food Buffet with only Yellow rice, Curry and a piece of Chicken Meat for 2000 Yen is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE… LOL ^^ Could we get better food next time, Danny?

Well, its been several days since the Anime Festival Asia 2009 has ended. Many people have posted their various experiences and encounters at the event. Now it’s my turn. What took me so long you say? Well I’ve had a few commitments impede my progress such as completely reworking the image hosting for the site. Instead of my blog using the standard image hosting that wordpress provides (which is slow, sluggish and inconvenient), I now use photobucket which makes uploading images and posting them on the site a lot easier as well as the images happen to load significantly faster. I also have been working on the site’s gallery and videos section which have been significantly updated with images from the AFA 2009 event, feel free to check them out. Now without any further delay I shall report my findings at this years Anime Festival Asia!

Early Arrival

For those that thought arriving early to avoid the hassle of the crowds was that simple, well you were wrong. The 4th level of the Suntec City building was full by 10am (which was the opening time). Thank god I had pre-ordered my tickets and didn’t have to stand in line for one as the queue for tickets was endless. Cosplayers could be seen standing around amongst the crowds.

The crowds on the second day were much lesser compared to the first day. Good thing for me, less people to accidentally bump into.

Danny Choo / Tokyo Figure Show

When the gates finally opened. I went straight to the Danny Choo/ Tokyo Figure Show booth, where I was surprised to find Danny Choo himself to be standing by himself (for the rest of the day people would be crowding around him). I managed to take a quick picture of him, swap name cards and shake his hand. That itself had already made my day. Later on in the day I managed to get him to sign my copy of The Otaku Encyclopedia by Patrick W. Galbraith. Another joyful moment.

The booth itself was amazing as it contained many discontinued figurines of all sorts which I never have been able to lay my hands on. This was a chance for me to see them up close. It also gave me a sneak preview of things to come such as the Black Rock Shooter figure that everyone has their eye on, plus the limited edition Mirai Figma which hopefully will be released soon. The ita-bike made by Kodomut was fantastic. I’ll only show a few pictures here as the rest can be viewed in the gallery.

Cosplay

For those of you who wondered the festival grounds might have noticed the various cosplayers showing off their costumes. I was able to take a few shots throughout the event. A few of my personal favourites are listed below. Once again there are many more pictures in the gallery.

Bandai / Gundam

For those take came, I doubt you would have missed the Bandai and Gundam exhibition that was close to the entrance. Some of them were seen earlier in the month at the BAKUC Exhibition in Orchard Road. Many of the ones seen earlier were placed on display here at the AFA. Looking them up close again allowed me to see the hard work and effort put into these masterpieces. Looking at them makes me feel like purchasing a gunpla kit and start building one. Perhaps I’ll leave that for another day.

Artwork

One of the exhibitions that I feel was underrated and less touched on was the artists corner where it displayed all the talented works of aspiring artists. Some artworks simply blew me away as the detail and colours were astounding. We truly have some talent people in Singapore. If only I could draw as half as good as them, I’d be happy already.

I personally found myself favouring the Saber picture as my she is one of my favourite characters. The picture shows her elegance and beauty in her normal combat attire as well as capturing an emotionless face that could be hiding sorrow and sadness of her past. Another favourite from me would be the Naruto Hearts picture which is a cross series parody of the Naruto and Kingdom Hearts series. Interesting combination that could work in the future. I found it interesting to see artworks from the Warhammer 40,000 series on display, but to me I was glad to see other genres of works there. I personally used to collect, assemble and battle with the model figures a long time ago. Anyway the two pictures below used a different style of painting which successfully captured the chaotic nature of the Marines locked into battle with the xenos.

I found the last two pictures to be very creative and amusing. It seems we have some members of Anonymous lurking around heh. I wonder who drew that Harley Danny Choo picture? Nonetheless it was very amusing. Excellent work.

Moe Moe Kyun Cafe

The day 1 queue was so long I couldn’t even find where the queue ended. It would have been nice if me and my mates had gone inside but once again the queues were too long and I figured it would have been expensive to purchase food inside. I had run out of money by the time the queues had shortened. The queues on the second day were significantly shorter as there was less people at the festival. From the outside it seemed like a good place and sit down though,

Kareshi Kanojyo no Mise (KKnM)

The KKnM stalls was one of the earlier booths I visited at day 1. I figured all the good stuff would be gone at the end of the day, I decided to have a peek to see what exclusives I could bag. With a touch of luck, I was about to bring home a Figma Saber Lily as well as a Good Smile Company 1/8 Saber. The stall was packed all the way from morning to late afternoon. All the good stuff was gone by afternoon. I had managed to catch a glimpse of a Figma Product 01 Konata in a Haruhi Cosplay (for $150) early morning, however I was beaten to it by someone else. Lucky guy, oh well easy come easy go.

There were other figurine stalls also like RoboRobo and La Tendo but were just as full. Each shop had their own different set prices plus exclusives. I saw a discontinued Fate from the Nanoha series going for $500 and above. Jeez I wonder who would buy that.

Tactical Weapons

A small front was setup for these guys. They had their weapons on display. Cool looking weapons, movable and life-like. Pistol chambers would move if fired, foldable handgrips and so on. Of course all their weapons were replicas. Lots of their advertisements were people in an army uniform carrying their weapons, many of them could be seen around the place.

Cospa

Yup, even Cospa is setting up shop in Singapore now. About 1 week before the AFA, they already had started up their website which can be found here. They had all sorts of anime t-shirts, towels, mugs and other accessories. They even had a Jan-Ken-Pon (scissors paper rock) competition give away. The finalist would play against Danny Choo. I was somewhere behind the crowd at that point of time. The lucky guy eventually won a Black Mirai T-shirt. Congrats!

Besides clothing, they had HUGE Litter Buster’s towels at a whopping $150. Tempting but insanely expensive even for me. Adorable designs though.

Did I mention they had a wall scroll for the upcoming Nanoha movie? Well if not here’s the poster for it.

Too bad I ran out of funds to purchase one. Oh well I can still pick one up at the store or hopefully Sunshine Plaza.

Summer Wars

An upcoming anime movie, Summer Wars, had their own booth. I decided to snoop around to see what I could found up this anime. Apparently it was created by Madhouse who also created Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) which is one of my favourite anime movies of all time. Much hype of this movie is to be expected as the studio itself has earned a name for themselves. through their previous masterpieces. As I saw the preview, the artwork and animation seems extremely details and beautiful (like its previous movie), I’ll definitely be watching this movie when it is released. Hopefully I will have time to do a review on the movie when it comes out later on in the year.

Collateral Damage Studios

Mainly the K-ON and Ayanami Rei artwork caught my eye as I walked past it. I few things I managed to spot was a familiar piece of artwork I saw on figure.fm about 1 week before the AFA. I asked if the artist was there, however he was busy looking around the place. Damn I wanted to ask him for his name card. I saw a massive Mio Akiyama wall scroll which I wouldn’t have mind getting, but once again I was out of funds. Their website can be found here.

Takashimaya Store

As expected, they had their own store which was fairly huge compared to the rest. They were selling all kinds of thing, dakimakuras/body pillows, pillow cases, mugs, bags, wall scrolls, pretty much anything with an anime design on it. The place was a bit price but I still managed to pick up a Shakugan no Shana wall scroll for a good $40. Not bad considering the size. The place was packed like a can of tuna from morning to god knows when. Regardless there were people inside throughout the whole day. Something that caught my eyes was the Domo kun plushies they had out front. I couldn’t resist to take a picture as well as giving it a great big hug. Oh just so you know the biggest size of Domo kun costed $300. Big Domo costs big bucks.

Storm Lion Booth

They were advertising for a new movie coming out soon. Didn’t have time to look around there though. I saw a fantastic artist who used photoshop and a drawing tablet to draw a masterpiece throughout the whole day. He just ignored everyone and kept drawing. Absolutely amazing.

Animax Live Dubbing

Near the back of the exhibition was the Animax area which were promoting special deals for Starhub Cable television. Not bad deals but the contract for cable television is too long since I’ll only be here for a few more months. What was unique about the place was the live recording studio they had at the back. You could input your own voice as one of the main characters in the anime of your choice. Quite embarrassing however humourous for those watching like me. I was too shy to give it a try for myself.

Cosplay Weapons Stall

A small stall was setup by a bunch of mainland Chinese guys which sold weapons (mainly swords) from various anime. What I spotted was Uchiha Sasuke’s sword, Saber Alter and normal Saber, some sort of Final Fantasy sword which I think sold out fast, wooden bokkens, various swords from Bleach and many other Katanas. Each were about $40 and were mainly made of wood. Not bad but I’d prefer to make my own. If I had to buy one it would probably be the normal Saber or Saber Alter sword. Quite tempting to buy one though.

Dolfies Stalls

I’m not a Dolfie person but when I came across the stall, I was shock to see how elegant and beautiful these things were when I saw them up close. They truly are a masterpiece. I didn’t bother asking for the price as I already knew it was out of my range. Extremely beautiful dolls.

Weiss Schwarz Booth

Had a quick peek into their booths. They had all kinds of starter decks to choose from. I would have picked up a Fate/Stay Night starter deck but they didn’t have it in stock. The Nanoha deck was also quite tempting. Hopefully when it is released in the retail shops, I’ll be able to pick one up. Seems easy enough to learn. Anyway there were people playing the card game throughout the whole day. There was even a competition from what I was told.

Region Cosplay Championships

Since it was my first time being apart of an audience for a cosplay competition I had assumed the crowds wouldn’t have been so big. I was completely wrong when I had to make my way through the amount of people gathering for the on stage event. Due to the large crowds, awkward position and constant obstruction of view by the media and AFA crew, I was unable to get decent shots the whole time.

Anyway the finalists and anime skit chosen were:

ST Revolutions (Singapore) – Unknown Anime

00 Emotions (Singapore) – Gundam 00

Sekai no Gumi (Malaysia) – Code Geass

Endless Illusion (Indonesia) – Lineage II

Houshin Enqi (Thailand) – Unknown Anime

Witchblade (Philippines) – Witchblade

Each contestant won a participating prize as well as a big hug from Kaname who was cosplaying as Kamina from Gurren Lagenn. The hug between the Gundam and Kaname was priceless.

Personally, I thought 00 Emotions and Endless Illusions had the best costumes and assume they took the longest to create. The Gundam costume doesn’t need any words to describe their costume. One look will explain everything. The costumes made for the Lineage II skit was simply beautiful especially under the stage lights where the armour and weapons truly shine (literally) with brilliance.

With the skit and their performance Sekai no Gumi have points from me for almost complete originality St Revolutions did provide a very emotional scene with outstanding acting.

Nonetheless congrats to 00 Emotions and their Gundam 00 skit for an excellent performance as well as taking home the Grand Prize for Go Singapore!

Moe Moe Kyun Girls Karoke Performance

On the second day of the festival the Moe Moe Kyun girls did a karoke session. Enjoyable to watch. Video captured below is done by other than yours truly.

Joysound Karoke Booth

Located near the Animax area, near the back of the hall was a karoke machine where people could chose and sing their favourite Japanese songs (not just anime openings and closings). Lots of people gathered waiting for others to try the machine. As for me, I’m generally a crap singer, plus I don’t know fluent Japanese. The more of a reason for me to completely avoid touching the microphone. Anyway a few people were courageous enough and delivered a wonderful performance whether their singing was good or bad. Either way I think they had fun, because I know I enjoyed watching them sing (or attempt to). A few of the singers can be viewed below, sorry for the crap sound quality.

K-ON Experience

Now here comes the highlight for the second day of the AFA. The K-ON stage live dubbing took place a few minutes after the karoke performance by the Moe Moe Kyun maids. I promised myself I’d get a seat just for this so I took the effort to come extra early. I managed to grab a seat near the front which I was content with. They decided to prohibit video and photography taking for the remaining of the onstage events so I was unable to take any photos or videos. I saw a few people get their gear confiscated eek.

Before the girls came onto the stage, Reiko (one of the MC’s) asked Danny Choo (being the other MC) was asked “What do you like about K-ON?”. He responded with pretty much what 99% of the audience was thinking which was “That they are beautiful little girls” or something along the lines of that. Majority of the people there had a chuckle including myself as we understood what he meant.

As the girls were introduced on stage, a familiar opening song and video played as they came out one by one. Right on cue as their individual characters were displayed on-screen they walked onto the stage. I think I partially lost my hearing due to the crowd cheering.The crowd roars as each of the seiyu’s come on to the stage. They introduce themselves to the audience in English (which wasn’t too shabby).It seems that Mio’s seiyu didn’t show which was a downer however it was still good that the rest had made it to the festival. From what I could recollect, the group of girls were a happy, energetic and lively bunch.

After introducing themselves they proceeded with the live dubbing. They did 3 scenes in total each one being as humorous and well performed as the previous.

Azusa still being new to the club as well as the K-ON scene, comes back to the club house to find the rest of the girls slacking. Yui successfully tempts her weakness, which happens to be cake.

Yui’s guitar (Gitah as Yui has named it) is being sent for a maintenance at their local instrument store. What Yui doesn’t realize is that this is not free, however the shopkeeper see Mugi and weavers off the fee since her family owns the store.

The 4 girls as seen walking home in the snow as they discuss where to hold their next club training session.

Overall, it was a wonderful performance I was amazed at how they recited their own lines with utmost precision and timing to the corresponding episode. They did it while enjoy themselves as well as pulling funny faces and poses. It was truly brilliant.

Their Question & Answer session followed shortly after where Danny Choo would pick questions (submitted by fans on the AFA website).

Once again I thank SP LifeArt & j1m0ne, as I couldn’t remember the exact questions and answers from the day itself.

Question 1: How similar are you to your character you voice in K-ON?

Aki Toyosaki (Yui): She is air-headed and prone to daydreaming

Satomi Satō (Ritsu): Before she became a seiyu she mention that she was a shy and quiet girl. When she took the role of Ritsu she became more lively and energetic due to her character’s personality. Similiar to Ritsu she encourages her fellow friends and teammate.

Minako Kotobuki (Mugi): She enjoys bringing gifts of sweet things like cake for her friends and teammate to eat.

Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa): She is not as serious as her character but she does enjoy eating sweet things. Thanks to her role, she now likes taiyaki.

Question 2: What are the challenges you face when voicing your character?

Aki Toyosaki (Yui): Since Yui has a high-pitched voice, she tries to prevent straining her voice.

Satomi Satō (Ritsu): Ritsu is known for a tomboyish nature, she triess to balance her voice in sounding like a boy as well as being harsh for certain scenes.

Minako Kotobuki (Mugi): Mugi has a natural slow and peaceful speaking voice so when voicing her, she has to slow down when talking.

Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa): She often scolds her seniors, however she herself is still a junior in school, so she has to balance between how harsh she sounds.

Question 3: What is your favourite line from K-ON?

Aki Toyosaki (Yui): “Un-tan Un-tan Un-tan”. Basically she made this sound.

Satomi Satō (Ritsu): “Ano toki no yakusoku wa… uso datta no ka!?” – That promise we made…. was it all a lie!?

Minako Kotobuki (Mugi): “Mo-ichido Moe” seen here in the first few seconds. Amusing video.

Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa): “Nya” (Meow) When she puts on the Nekomimi cat ears seen here.

Question 4: What are the similarities of your own schooling life to your characters school life in K-ON?

Aki Toyosaki (Yui): Her clubs during her school days involved gathering and having fun rather than training or normal activities itself.

Satomi Satō (Ritsu): She had a childhood friend, also if her friend befriended someone else or gave her less attention she would become jealous.

Minako Kotobuki (Mugi): If one of her friend in her group are sick, she is the one saying this can or cannot be done with that person.

Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa): She was a member of the ‘going home’ club during her school life, similar to K-ON as the group of girls walk home together.

Question 5: If you were not a seiyu (voice actress), what would you be?

Aki Toyosaki (Yui): Someone who uses their voice like a singer.

Satomi Satō (Ritsu): Yet again, someone who uses their voice, a storyteller at the library or pet shop owner or childcare worker. She would probably keep changing jobs.

Minako Kotobuki (Mugi): Her dream was to use her voice and become a seiyu, but if she didn’t it would have been something creative like a stylist or make-up artist.

Ayana Taketatsu (Azusa): Someone that catches the bad guys, like a detective. Something like Detective Conan as she read the manga.

It was shortly after they announced that 4 lucky people would be walking away with signed boards of each of the seiyu’s autographs. 4 seats were called out. I-28, H-16, M-35, A-18 however no one was sitting there so C-31 was called again. When ‘H’ in H-16 was called I think I felt my heart stop beating for a few seconds. Sadly it was seat 16 in my row as I was sitting in seat 20. Close but no cigar.

After the Q & A, which proved to be very amusing as well as insightful, it ended off well with the seiyu’s saying their final words as they were all happy to be in Singapore and will be looking forward to coming back. They said their goodbyes and waved to the audience as they left the stage. Overall I found it to be very entertaining as I was very lucky to be there. I shall cherish this moment for the rest of my life.

I wish I knew Japanese so I could have done a better job of translation. I hopefully learn Japanese in the future.

Kaname Cosplay Panel Session – The Basics of Cosplay

The panel session was split into several parts consisting of introduction, character selection, costume selection, sewing and posing. He mainly gave his own tips and know-how on the topics at hand. His own personal life was included in some of the discussion, stuff like what he does when he is not cosplaying, what he does in his spare time, when did he start cosplaying and so on.

Conclusion

Overall, I had a fantastic time I had really enjoyed myself and di majority of the things I had wanted to do. There’s really much else to say other than I’ll be looking forward to next years Anime Festival Asia. There are still similar events remaining this year such as the Comic Fiesta in Sunway Pyramid, Malaysia (on the 19 to 20 December) as well as the End of Year 2009 (on the 26th December).

Now without further a due, I shall depart with none other than Danny Choo and his Tokyo Stormtrooper dance in Singapore to conclude this report. Enjoy.

Created using Sports/Camp Fasteners, 1 Meter of webbing, a couple of buckles and etc. Why create the vest? I am designing my armor to the limbs would be attached to this vest, and i wear the chest and stomach armor like a shirt and an overall. This picture shows how the shoulder(bell)+upper arm armor, and thigh armor are connected to the vest. This is an old picture, but alterations mentioned on this picture has already been done! ^w^

Soon, all limbs will be wearable. When it comes to testing the armor, its all about the limbs and mobility!!

Anime Festival Mascot

It’s the closest thing we could get to an international festival and it was satisfying. Even before the doors opened, anime fans from all over Singapore descended on the Suntec Convention Center for Anime Festival 09. While I still had to pick up my tickets from Sistic, there were lots of cosplayers spilling out of the MRT and to the festival. Upon reaching the convention center it was really crowded. One it was a Saturday but then there were also events taking place adding to the crowd.

One thing I realized is that I would have to get used to lining up over the weekend. And I do mean lines.

It would take almost half an hour to buy the day tickets but the entrance itself was just a breeze. You just had to make sure that this wasn’t the line to the Singtel event.

Inside, the Bandai booth will greet you along with the Takashimaya booth as well as a line of various gashapons.

I didn’t watch the first night which featured Shoko Nakagawa, Ichirou Mizuki and the virtual idol, Hatsune Miku. I instead went to the Yoshiki Fukuyama and May’n concert which was the following night.

It’s forbidden to take pictures but Danny Choo can and has a complete coverage here.

It was really fun and exciting. Especially when they got to the end where May’n and Yoshiki Fukuyama had a duet of Diamond Crevasse from Macross Frontier (Sugoi!) and Dynamite Explosion from Macross 7.

After two hours, the concert ended and along with it the end of AFA 09. A lot of lessons learned and also a lot of memories to bring home. But it was well worth it.

There was a raffle to determine who will be able to get an autograph with the performers but sadly I didn’t win the one for May’n. I was however able to take photos of Yoshiki Fukuyama signing stuff and posing for pictures.

I know I missed a lot such as the Witchblade sisters coming to day 2 dressed as the Sunegai sisters. I was too busy shopping in Orchard Road. I promise, no shopping next year. I will try to do better.

But now enough of AFA 09. We all have AFA 10 to look forward to and hopefully everyone from this year will return, get a bigger venue (please please! the other event is just crowding the AFA too much ) And maybe Alodia and Ashley will return next year and finally win the championship.

もう一回！anime festival asia ‘09 was definitely a blast. although i felt the exhibits does not seems as great as last year’s, they have alot of other events to make up for it. the artistes for the ‘i love anisong’ concert featured king of anime songs, ichirou mizuki; macross frontier’s sheryl nome performer, may’n; blogger queen, shoko nagakawa; jam project member, yoshiki fukuyama; popular virtual idol, hatsune miku. there was also the introduction of the moe moe kyun maid cafe which drew the crowds to experience a unique dining experience.

there was also special appearance by k-on! seiyuu, renowned japan cosplayer kaname☆ who cosplayed as simon,  tengen toppa gurren-lagann on day 1 and cloud strife, final fantasy vii: advent children on day 2; as well as japan top blogger, danny choo. what more can an otaku ask for?

afa, saturday: 

this 2 days event really tires me out for only sleeping 3 hours a day each from rushing the costume out. having exams on the two weeks right before the event does not help at all. anyway, cosplayed as hei from darker than black on the first day which was quite a last minute decision due to the effect of the high’ness i received from watching 流星の双子, season 2 of darker than black. i strongly recommend you to watch it if you haven’t, the story and characters are simply awesome!

the second day was a killer, not enough sleep made me both hyper and mad. i rushed the whole night and in the morning again, and was still rushing when i met up with the guys; a very random d.gray-man group with random people haha~ why bother about a group theme when everyone can just have fun, we thought. we had breakfast at kfc in suntec, started preparing, had some screw ups with props, timing and registration. but we soon put those unhappy thoughts aside and enjoy the event to its best.

sunday is a not a day for event definitely, it was way too crowded combined with the wall of photographers forming endlessly as soon as a cosplayer strikes a pose. i was quite overwhelmed to be honest. for a certain point of time, i had to say sorry and walk away, i apologised to those who wanted a photo, i just needed a break for my eyes because they became unable to focus from all the camera flashes.

ended the event will may’n awesome concert. she sang the top tracks from macross frontier, namely northern cross, lion, iteza gogo kuji don’t be late; and  encore: diamond crevasse. seeing her live was like a dream come true~ and lastly, our humble group got to meet kaname☆as he left the event area. exchanged waves and goodbyes. a memorable event indeed <3

next event upcoming will be eoy held at the national library.. why library? it seems alot of people are having doubts with regards to the location, but the organisers gave their promise on making the event epic. we’ll see in less than a month’s time to go~ eoy also mark a year of cosplay for me, i hope it will be a meaningful one!

My very first anime convention, and it was the incredibly awesome Anime Festival Asia in Singapore. While many people chose to focus on the merchandise, I decided to focus on the participants of the con – the cosplayers. SIXTY crazy photos ahead! With Singapore being the next most proliferate anime hub, the cosplayers have quite the reputation to hold up, and it doesn’t disappoint.

I would have posted earlier, but being sick kinda delayed it a little. Oh, the above photo wasn’t taken by me, as I didn’t bring my DSLR with me on my trip, that and I also couldn’t get that close to the lovely Gwendolyn.

So I arrived on late Friday, and basically my first breakfast before going to AFA was my absolute favorite breakfast delicacy in Singapore – Roti Prata. Delicious start to my visit!

On the way to Suntec. Decided not to go through the City Hall to Suntec underpass because my friend wanted to have a smoke. It was a nice day for a walk anyway. The weather is nice this time of year – much cooler than summer. It’s like Vancouver’s summer weather!

Inside Suntec. The convention hub is also a mall!  Not too much has changed in here since my last visit, compared to the rest of Singapore. (more photos in the near future).

My AFA ticket. It’s rather unfortunate that my Sunday ticket is still firmly attached to the stub. I got pretty sick near the end of Day 1, and basically was wrestling with the idea of whether to attend Day 2. I regret not going, but at the same time, it probably would have destroyed the rest of my vacation here.

My lunch. Swenson’s baked chicken on rice. I haven’t had Swenson’s in over 4 years! Singapore’s chicken has a very different texture to it, one that I can’t say I really like. The meat is stringy and dry – even with all this sauce.

Into the fray I go. Fortunately, thanks to Zh3us’ organizing, I was able to obtain tickets without needing to line up for hours. I arrived late, and the line-up was still insane! When you walk in the door, you’re greeted by this large (or should I say small) Gundam.

No idea who they are, but frankly, I don’t care. THIS is how cosplay works. Not like most of that North American crap.

A Beyond-Perfect-Grade Gundam. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen something as cool as this at that kind of scale.

I’m speechless at how cool this looks. BADASS!

After finally seeing a Cintiq for the first time in person, I’ve decided to buy less anime figures, sell more anime figures, and save up for a Cintiq.

Absolutely amazing work. I enjoy these kinds of paintings more than the typical anime fan art nowadays. I especially love it when they introduce a more asian/anime influenced edge into this kind of work. It’s what I hope to accomplish in the future.

Suigintou cosplayer. She’s absolutely adorable! And I’m not just talking about the outfit! A very friendly, and timid demeanor from the brief 15 seconds of interaction I had with her.

This is what the convention is all about – jacked up prices for large volumes of anime merchandise, and a lot of rare ones too!

Not a cosplayer, but her job is obvious. Decided to cover her face out of respect.

K-On! Not much else I can say about this photo other than “NICE GUITAR!”

I kinda know who the girl on the left is (Bleach?) But the rest escape me. I’m guessing they’re just loligoth.

Same deal. Who are they cosplaying as? Doesn’t matter. I’m sure any girl would love to wear a flowing princessy dress for a day while people snap pictures of her like a celebrity/model.

Can’t say for sure, but I think this guy is a very famous artist. (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time?). Autograph signing had just closed when I got there.

I absolutely cannot wait to see this movie! Production I.G. FTW!

Stickers to prove your worth.

Absolutely awesome Black Rock Shooter cosplayer. The eye thing is a very nice touch. What I find interesting is that you can have ANYONE simply carry a samurai sword, and it will look like cosplay. Wear loligoth, carry a katana = cosplay. Wear a school uniform, carry a katana = cosplay. Wear street clothes, carry a katana = cosplay.

Awesome KH cosplayer. Those weapons are hand-made! I asked what it was made out of and what was involved. It was very technical. I was lost at “composite”.

Terrible fanart is terrible. I like how well it’s rendered, but the entire thing looks… dead. There’s just something incredibly lacking about it – the facial expressions, the poses, the composition, how stiff everyone looks, the complete lack of dynamic movement, it’s just all wrong. Being a huge fan of Valkyria Chronicles, I found this image insulting.

Yes, this is how good fanart looks. Stylized in your own way, but in ways that add to the original concept, not take away. While the general style is “generic”, it’s done well, and works well with the character.

There’s something about a group of cosplaying girls sitting around chatting. Bonus points for them being frilly loligoth cosplayers. You’ll notice they’r still segregated between the “anime hair color” group and the “natural hair color group”.

There were better poses from her, but oh well.

This guy was a great cosplayer. Very friendly, totally open, and very patient. He held that pose for a good 30 seconds while someone with a DSLR snapped away silently.

Gwendolyn from Odin Sphere. When I first saw her wandering, I was floored. I wasn’t camera ready as she went through a door and vanished. I wasn’t satisfied leaving without a shot of her. I ran into her again (friend pointed her out). Unfortunately, this photo doesn’t do her justice anyway. I also saw ONE girl dressed as Konata (height was accurate too) but wasn’t camera ready at the time she went passed and disappeared around a corner.

Quite sad that this was the only pic I got of Danny Choo as he was mobbed and rushing away. I shouted “DANNY!” he looked over, and said “Hey!” That blurry thing in front of him is his hand as he waved. If I’m not mistaken, that’s Alodia. It’s blurry, but you can see her Witchblade makeup still on.

At the end of it all, after looking through all my photos, I feel it’s time I bought a new point and shoot camera. Most of the photos I got were blurry under this low light condition. There are cameras nowadays with face tracking, smile tracking, and anti-motion blur processing. I want to get a point and shoot that I can take out for quick shots and not have to worry about missing a moment.

AFA 09 was a lot of fun, and I really wish I was able to attend Day 2. I’ll definitely try to attend again. I’ll at least be attending my local anime con – Anime Evolution, though my friend tells me that I’ll be disappointed after having been exposed to AFA.

I’ve still got more to experience here, and I’ve already taken quite a number of photos of Singapore – the next most proliferating anime hub on the internetz. So stay tuned to check out what Singapore is like!

Hmm… Seems like I’m lazy again. Checked my last post and it was posted more than one month ago. ^^; Been busy meeting friends and attending company’s events for the past few weeks. Always felt tired when I reached home, but I still go to facebook almost everyday. ^^;

Only went to AFA 09 on Saturday. One day’s admission fee is 3 times of last year’s. =_=

The maid cafe. Always have a long queue at the entrance, but I’m not interested with maid cafes in Singapore. Not really sure why.

Two famous people spotted. Felt a bit sorry for the GSC boss. When I took photo with him, people started to notice his present. In the end, he had to walk away from the booth and crowd while waiting for Danny. ^^;

The MC of AFA 09 as Yui from K-ON. She can’t really move away from one spot as many people wants to take photos with her. Me wanted too, but looking at her situation I gave up the idea. She looks tired and eager to get out of that spot.

Will watch Summer Wars when it’s aired in Singapore. Those were drawn by the director. Never know the director could draw too. ^^

Thanks to Passerby B  for pushing me towards Danny and got this photo taken. Danny said that he had seen me somewhere. Not sure whether he really remembers me for attending his blogger workshop last year or because that I look like any other otaku in the event. ^^

And of course the main highlight of AFA 09 is the live concert performance. Don’t say that you went to AFA if you didn’t go to the live concert. Great performance by Shokotan, Miku and Aniki. Too bad I missed the performance by May’n and Yoshiki Fukuyama on the next day. Really love the songs from Macross Frontier.

And this is what I bought from the event. The ‘I love anisong’ normal edition T-shirt. Was told that this was the last M-size black version.

Japanese popular culture websites have been buzzing this past week-end. AFA 2009 got going in Singapore seems to have been pretty big.

I have been following Danny Choo around the convention through his blog and now i am pretty sure that i will attend next year’s AFA event.

Thinking about making an interview-like visit to the AFA so some publishing house would actually cover some of the expenses.

I spent a few minutes thinking about what word to use for the post title, trying to refrain from using straits times and danny choo, but i guess being bad at language, i’ll be using “ahhh bummer” which means what a disappointment.

If you read this post here. You’ll catch a couple of sentences written by Danny Choo about Straits Times distorting his views and whatever he said, that sucks on like 90 levels, lol.

first level, straits times is singapore’s national paper, if assuming DC’s right, that means the ST sucks either on english interpretation, or stupid reporters.  World’s 154th media misquoting civilians? Not often I hope but hardly surprising. I was interviewed by an ST reporter too, 5 paragraphs of what I said and he changed my profession and the number of iphone applications I have. how about that?

In any case, i dont trust local papers, trust reduced by 50%.

Nothing much to say about it .. its Danny Choo trying to imitate the Singaporean accent/slang! With a few mei-dos! =3 After AFA09, i was amazed to find out, not only was it a big event for otaku, but a massive culture shock for those who didnt know what the AFA was all about. Well, first time for everything! Apparently the newbies were shocked to see so many otakus in Singapore, and brain-freezed when they saw the maid cafe! Coz they didnt know how to react to it! ROFL. Looks like otaku culture is not globally known yet in some areas of the world. Either that, or these ‘normals’ have not been surfing the internet right! Haha!

The staff that  helped pull off AFA09 did a great job, even when they were shocked by Otaku Culture. Even when saying “I am trying to keep an open mind..” .. their minds mostly froze about how a big deal anime conventions can be! Its like that quote “Humans tend to fear what they do not understand!” .. enough bickering about the mortals .. they can take their own time to accept otakuism and evolve or something. Why?! I don think i can put it into words but i will try. So today me and kb met at 9am at Tiong mrt, Wr cuz watch K-on until 4am didnt made it; brand and wei jie wanted to come late.

So we reach there, waited a while go in le, was really bored lol. Then browse around again, slack here and there. Then around a while more we went to Kaname Panel. Hmm tons of ur dumb fangals there screaming like so crazy shit… I sat there becuz I wanted to wait for K-on Panel . Then came the Song and Voice Acting Panel, which i think the song one is organiser call her go one and the voice acting with pretty good .

And did someone had to spoil my mood, dumb auntie from shop called and ask y nv come. I wanted to say: U fucking blind or wad. Duno wads call OFF on rooster _|_. Cb noobs nobody come blame me clever .

Well Away with that Bullshit, came K-on panel. Well Dumb Singaporeans again. No Video and Photo, still same thing. When the organisers have to force ppl to keep they eq, THEN ppl not happy… Stupid ppl, say don means don, when ppl shout at u then not happy. Dumbasses are dumb lmao.

Then came K-on gals!!!…Without Mio -_-. Well i m not a fan of Mio but Aki-chan!!!! Came Azusa, Yui, Mugi and Ritsu. All of them are cute, while Mugi’s forehead is a bit high XD. Hmm so had those Q&A and stuff. Danny was hosting the Panel with Reiko. Some really interesting question there, like:

“If u are not a seiyuu, wad job do u think u will be doing?”

Yui: My dream was to become a seiyuu…If i m not one, i will still wanna use my voice as a tool for my job. I will do a job which can let me use my voice .

Ritsu: Mayb a childcare teacher?

Mugi: I will be a make-up artist, stylist or someone involved in Production.

O ya Azunyan one was most interesting: I wanna be a detective! I really love Sherlock Holmes series!

Haha most interesting of them. Got somemore question but i kind of forgotten. I was shouting Aki-chan!!!! All the way and she did look over . Shiyawase!!! Then came 4 lucky winners of their autographs on signing board. Where they call ur seat number and u win. I got J-16 where H-16 won. FUCKKKK!!!! And i was thinking if some auntie tio how LMAO. Well i m not sad, jus say unlucky ba.

Then aft went to eat, eat Chicken Rice and hope the fork and spoon was used by Shoko-tan af all :D:D:D:D! Then went bak.

Went 3rd floor took photos, then went bak a bit then went 5th floor to meet Nanoha team! Saw Nanoha and Momoko >.<. But only said hi, cuz i went looking for vader and gengar but cant find XD. Then lost them le.

Then went bak lo, to WS Seiyuu Panel! Wow Bushiroad President’s English is MAO but he trys very hard. Ganbatte Shachou!! Hmm then i actually took a close up of them both ytd so no need for on-stage shots . Saw them voice ytd also live le . Hmm The Mash was really embarrassed lmao when Shachou said he was a M and Kitta Izumi was a S lol. Well Izumi is really beautiful ^_^.

Then aft hang out with Marcus a while, where i suddenly wanna play WS again, abandoning my LBEX deck XD going for CANAAN!!!! Bahah!

Finally. Its time for the concert. Yes. Its time. Me and Marcus went in at rite 6.30 and was late by a few secs when the song started. Well when i made my way to my seats…Someone was there. So i bo bian since 1st song was King Gainer and i love it a lot, faster put my bags down 1st and took out lightstick and starting swinging!!! The crowd is really high and siao. So af one song i faster ask that guy if hes got the wrong seat and yes… NB CB TAKE MY SEAT U WANNA FUCKING DIE?!

Forgot 2nd song but its a damn nice song also. Fuck yes!!! Then aft got Makka na Chikai, Try again, A slow song. Fuck yes, Makka na Chikai makes everyone high like siao lol. Everyone was singing along. And the guy beside me was really crazy fellow lol. Got moefied by him really.

Then came the EPIC moment of the whole concert. When he said he wanted to bring his band nxt time, everyone was chanting JAM Project like siao. Then in the end he said: “Yea i will come bak nxt year with them.”Everyone roared like some crazy ppl. Me and Marcus punch each other’s fist YEA!!! Even if its not all, but one by one they come ^_^.

Then Try again was fucking win with Basara live really. Damn its totally great. In the end he threw his guitar prick, which landed near Marcus and he didnt notice -_-. Then when someone found it we all  “WOOOOO” at him haha. Fun.

Then somewhere around there where May’n comes out. Pink Monsoon expected one, then around 3 new songs which i like 1 or 2. Really electrifying songs and they are quite nice. Then aft Shangri-La OP which high the crowd again!! Then aft her album son i think nv quite hear 1 or 2. Then came Northern Cross! O god, its the best i can get out of this really. SAIKOU!!!!! Aft somemore epic one, who wanna guess?!

Damn it was fucking nice that i was jumping when the music starts without even caring abt the bak ppl. Yes i jumped. JUMPED! Lol. Its too good. I sang all the way to the end with all my breathe. Aft was one of her songs again or something i cant remember, too intoxicated by the atmosphere. Then May’n went bak in and we shouted “MOU IKKAI!” Until my throat pure rot and pain. Then came both May’n and Yoshiki!!!

Started with Totsugeki Love Heart, which was really powerful and explosive. Until this point i m already fking happy. Then came Diamond Crevasse sang by May’n and Guitar by Yoshiki. Hmm…Live is really too different from dumb MP3… The bass, which pump urs blood up and the echo of it hitting ur body. Is really fking good. The image or rather the singer u like rite in front of u, u really get charged up. The swinging of lightsticks of everyone, the sweat, the hotness, the voice, NOTHING in this world replaces them. Its simply too Awesome to not miss it.

May’n English went from some Singapore Auntie Standard to some normal person standard . Shes really good at it, although she did forgot some parts :p. But that was cute of her.

So me, kb,wr,and brandon met at 8am at Tiong mrt. So i went down to the platform and Brandon and wr were there. Then train come and kb also come out and we go in again, cuz going same way. So we made our way to Suntec 4 floor…

Wow, the amt of ppl xiong liao. Normal ticketing is like long like fuck lol. Then we manage to find the PO ppl queue then saw Marcus and Geno. I saw Ah fa and Huan Da also so said hi XD. Then we went to sit with them, plus Johnny came over, say help Taku buy Yui doll lol. At around 9.30, everyone stood up. Then came the Channel 8 reporter, some gal forgot the name. Then interviewed Kb friend, and Geno lol. I faster siam like siao.

Then 9.55, every hype up liao. Door open…………………………….And CHOING AR  FUCKER CHOING LIKE UR MAMA DIE T___T.

(Actually there was a Mediacrop DV there  filming, heng i run fast enough or else see my face . But got see my body for that 1 sec .)

Then CHOING AR!!!!!!!!!!!!! MAMA DIE AR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I actually was not choinging any place specifically but see KKnM queue reach like 50 in 10 secs, so i also join and browse lo. Bought 3 Nanoha clear poster, $16.90 each. Actaully called wr to help me sub while i go over to CDS. But well, in the end went bak to  KKnM and called kb help me buy CDS shirt and LB Artbook, each $35. Then aft, went nxt door to Cospa, also KKnM booth, bought Azunyan shirt, since its white and i don have a lot of white shirt lol, $45.90. Thx kb >.<.

Then found the big bag, which wr gave me…Thx a lot bro. Then threw everything in and went home, hoping someone help me pick up at mrt, but mom was chatting on the phone and sis haven wake up. FUCK, i ran home under the hot fking sun and ran bak to mrt and ran bak to the halls. FUCKING HOT AND TIRED.

Then since kb and wr eat le, i went over to KFC at Marina to find brand. Then i ate the OR Fillet again, but eat half only, too tired to eat lol. Then went bak. Then we went to look around, take photo and……met up with dragoon from sgc. Haha nice meeting him! Then went to watch Cosplay Competition on stage. Well not too fair for SG team to win all and the other teams nothing -_-. Well Kaname is really a IKEMEN. Really, i must say he really have the looks .

Then came the moment of this date, I went over to Danny’s booth and Danny was there. So i went over and requested a photo with him and YES, I TOOK A PHOTO WITH HIM! Woohoo! It was totally too awesome. He is a very very very friendly person.

Then aft went to find Jing Jie and Yan Hao. Walked a bit with them and reach the Karaoke booth .

Sung “Dreams” by Romantic Mode, which they took video yuck lol. They cam Kah Beng, we sang Lion together and ppl cheers. So happy!!!  Then came my seniors and Pearl also , my ex-senior. I joke abt Seikan Hikou and they push me sing i also really sing. Lucky Kb join me XD. Then we did the Kira with everyone which was really fun, but not much reply XD.Haha nvm ba.

Then aft took somemore photos and went to find Gengar and Vader and tons of the others. Forgot them le XD. Gomen. Hang out a bit, went bak to the halls and went to eat with Brandon and Wei Jie.

Aft we went bak to watch the concert jus rite nobody enter le so we went in. Omfg, its so behind until its so small see shit… Lol. But still can see a bit of a bit. Then came Shoko-tan with Cruel Angel’s Thesis!!! Fuck win bodoh. Then came Kenshin OP2 i think X or something. Then came a series of Tengen Toppa songs with i only know Sorairo Days XD. Sad. But yes shes really cute despite her age lol.

Then aft came Miku. Well ppl were expecting too much. Animelo did a on screen thing only, and ppl wan wad lj hologram. Fucking joke, at least got World is Mine, (?) and Mikumiku ni shiteageru. But i think its ok only, cuz last part laggggggg…Fail IT staff.

Then came Aniki!! Same as always i look forward to his Mecha songs i know. They sian for a round 20 minutes cuz of songs i duno XD. Then came Shoko-tan to see CrossFite, (?), and Go Mazinger! That was nice :D. Then went home with kb and wr and brandon. Well i took quite little photos as time was wasted by going home…

And Fucking Singaporean still duno wad is don take photo and Videography. At least this year less by a lot but, still don fucking listen. Noobshit ppl, jus get ram by car and die plox.

LOL went to AFA XD was relatively fun lols.
