We declared a DAO in our applicationContext.xml file. It’s time to create that DAO now by starting with an interface declaration. I called this interface MyDAO.java.

package com.example;

import java.util.List;

public interface MyDAO {

FilePickup selectFilepickupInstruction(long id);
List<FilePickup> selectFilepickupInstructions();

}

Then we need to create the class that will implement this interface. The name of this class should match that specified in the applicationContext.xml. In this example it’s MyDAOImpl.java.

package com.example;

import java.util.HashMap;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.Map;
import org.springframework.orm.ibatis.support.SqlMapClientDaoSupport;

public class MyDAOImpl extends SqlMapClientDaoSupport implements MyDAO {
  public MyDAOImpl() {
  }

  public FilePickup selectFilepickupInstruction(long id) {
    return
      (FilePickup)getSqlMapClientTemplate().queryForObject(
          "selectFilepickupInstruction",id);
  }
  public List<FilePickup> selectFilepickupInstructions() {
      return
        getSqlMapClientTemplate().queryForList(
            "selectFilepickupInstructions",null);

  }

}

Note that a java.util.list is used to handle results from a sql statement that returns multiple rows. The strings used in the queryForList() and queryForObject() methods are those names declared in the mapping stage.

*SPOILERS*

For anyone who’s been playing the awesome new RPG from Bioware there’s more good news. Or, bad news, depending on whether you want to shell out some more to buy a DLC. Return to Ostagar has been announced and will hit around “winter”. You’ll be able to “Return to Ostagar” (hihi) for some neat stuff.

I wonder: how will this work if your character died at the end of DA:O? I started a new game right before I went to fight the Darkspawn at Denerim so I’m not sure whether you die or not, but I have heard that there’s a possibility of you dying by delivering the killing blow to the Archdemon at the end.

Oh well, bring it on! Fuel my addiction! Or feed it, whatever…

Some years ago, I began working on my own version of the Daodejing (certainly I do not claim to having any substantial knowledge of classical Chinese! I had several other translations and other resources I was using, making it effectively a “version” rather than a “translation”). The very first line of the first chapter of the Daodejing has an interesting word: ch’ang. A few samplings of how this first line is typically translated:

The Tao that cannot be told is not the eternal Tao. [Gia-Fu Feng and English]

The way that becomes a way
is not the Immortal Way. [Red Pine]

The Way that can be told of is not an unvarying way… [Waley]

The word ch’ang is typically translated into English as “eternal,” “immortal,” “everlasting”—something along those lines. But as I dug around various books and internet resources, I discovered that the word also can mean “everyday,” in the sense of “ordinary”—that is to say, “the norm.” Personally, I thought “eternal” or “immortal” sounded far too abstract for the down-to-earth philosophy of the Daodejing. If the way is so ordinary yet ever-present, why make it sound so elevated? And so in my own version of the Daodejing the first line went like this:

the way prescribed is not the everyday way

If anything, haiku also is about the ordinary, the everyday. I have been thinking more and more of haiku as a form of thanksgiving. How can one be thankful for those simple things that we too often fail to notice every day? The best haiku focus on those very things. And so, with Thanksgiving coming up in the U.S., I thought this poem by Issa being appropriate:

A good world,

dew-drops fall

by ones, by twos.

Time is a relative thing, especially in games. Specifically: if I’m enjoying something, it flies, and if I’m not, it crawls. This is true of most things in life, but it was brought home to me by some of the comments on yesterday’s post.

I probably wasn’t clear. The Fade/Circle of Magi thing isn’t taking me any longer to complete than any of the other long plot sections (if you’re OC about doing everything like I am). It just feels like it’s taking twice as long. That’s not helped by the fact that, knowing I still have a node boss to slaughter and buddies to free, I really can’t be arsed to fire the game up and slog my way through it.

(If anyone thought I was ranting generally about Dragon Age yesterday, this should set the record straight. I am finding the Circle of Magi bit in the Fade to be excessively long to play. I do believe a few design ideas were overused, which increases this impression of painful repetition, but that doesn’t equate to a sudden “Dragon Age sucks!” ruling.)

In games, a slog is bad. A romp is good, but can easily become so rapid you stop experiencing the game and end up merely experiencing the speed of your progress. The trick is pacing a game so that the player still feels as though they’re romping but is also going slowly enough to feel like they’re experiencing a LOT of stuff. This applies to MMOs just as much as it applies to single player games. I expect most MMO players have had at least one conversation with another player where content was experienced entirely differently by each (“zomg so SLOW and BORING!” vs “wow, that went by so fast I almost wish I could do it again”).

An added design problem is that pacing differs for each individual. We don’t all play at the same rate, do all the same things, or spend the same amount of time admiring scenery and dungeon art. It takes work to provide a smorgasbord of content that the content locusts can NOM NOM NOM their blind hungry way through, but that the … let’s call them content slugs can enjoy much more slowly and completely.

Okay, Content Slug just doesn’t cut it, especially since I’m one of them. Will have to find a better term.

Look at many of the great bowls in the world—the Song dynasty bowl, the raku tea bowl, the porcelain

Look at many of the great bowls in the world—the Song dynasty bowl, the raku tea bowl, the porcelain wine bowl—and they will have a foot. This is raised rim on the bottom of the bowl that holds it above the table.

There are many reasons for this. Evenness and steadiness for one. Practicality for another—many people can hold a hot bowl by the foot and the rim, avoiding the hot body of the bowl. And it’s beautiful. The body of the bowl can seem to float above a tabletop, thereby giving it grace and delicacy.

The foot on a ceramic bowl is carved and not thrown when the clay is wet. When the bowl has been made and is the right height and the walls are the right thickness, it’s put aside to dry overnight. There’s a lesson in patience itself. No bowl is made instantly.

The next day, it’s “leather hard.” That means it’s still damp but firm enough to handle. The bowl is put onto the wheel upside down and held in place with lumps of clay. While the wheel turns, the potter carves away part of the bottom to shape the foot.

The potter had to leave enough to carve the foot, of course. There were a few times when I carved right through the bowl itself, ruining it. You can’t test, you can’t see, because the bowl is temporarily anchored upside down. You just have plan and you have to know. If you’re successful, though, you will hold the complete form of your bowl in your hands.

In the same way, wisdom and right action are not far away. They can be held in your hands.

The ancient Taoist sages who mastered mind and body had many different insights and techniques to h

The ancient Taoist sages who mastered mind and body had many different insights and techniques to have a healthy life and as a plus Self Realization. It is said that some of the teachings of Taoism originally come from India. This all makes sense if one investigates into the nature of Sanatana Dharma (hinduism) and Taoism. One can see the similarities between them. In particular I want to note is the use of energy in both systems. Not only this but both systems aim at Self Realization.

With that said breath work has been very instrumental to healthy living and enlightenment in both sciences. Many are familiar with the Yogic use of breath and energy work. The same thing is found in Taoist Yoga. What is deeply interesting to me is the technique of no breath. In Taoism this is called Embryonic Breathing. In Sanatana Dharma and Yogic paths one can achieve such a state in which no breath is necessary and yet the practictioner is able to control energy throughout his or her body and remain healthy and ALIVE!

In Taoism and in particular the practice of Qi Gong (sometimes spelled as Chi Kung) there is a use of Embryonic Respiration. It is the breath of no breath. This is possible when both the mind and body are fully relaxed. The mind and body must be relaxed and filled with Qi (Qi is life force, in yoga its called prana). Focusing on breathing is an easy way to relax not only the body but also the mind. A great method is focusing on the lower abdomen or the dan tian.

The lower dan tian or abdomon is about three inches below the naval. This is natural respiration. If you observe an infant you will notice that the infant breaths from this region. Overtime due to stress on the body and on the mind we forget this form of breathing. This breathing is very instrumental to good health and also mental clarity.

In order to begin Embryonic Respiration start breathing naturally. Just let the air come in and out. Watch the rise and fall of the lower dan tien (you dont have to look down). Have your eyes closed gently. You can sit in a chair (preferably on the edge of the chair with feet firmly on the ground and back straight but not rigid). You can sit cross legged if you like just make sure the spine is straight yet not in a rigid way. You are not trying to be a tough guy or woman let it be natural. Your right hand should rest gently on your lap and your left fist gently closes on the thumb of the right hand. This is a special mudra or hand gesture called the yin-yang mudra.

Let the breath be very natural. Have a few minutes to relax into simply allowing the rise and fall of the lower abdomen. After you have done this for a few minutes begin to visualize Qi (life force or energy) entering your body entirely. Let every part of your body be fused with this life giving Qi. Let no cell be without this Qi. The Qi pervades every part of your body. Every organ, vessel, cell, everything. As you breath out visualize stale Qi leaving your body. Do this set 9 times.

After you have completed the above cycle move on to visualizing Qi entering the upper dan tien or heart area of your body. Allow Qi to pervade the entire heart area of your body. As you breath out imagine this energy or Qi moving down into your lower dan tien or lower abdomen. Let this Qi pervade the lower region. Return again with another inbreath visualizing Qi entering into the heart area, then breath out vizualizing the Qi going down into the lower abdomen. Do this also for 9 times.

After that simply vizualize the Qi in the heart area as you breath in, then imagine the same energy staying inside your body and moving down into the lower abdomen. Then as you breathe in again vizualize that energy in the lower abdomen rising up to the heart region. Do this for 9 sets.

After the above cycle simply visualize the Qi staying in the abdomen. See it rising up in the abdomen with each in breath. Watch the Qi fall to the lower abdomen with each out breath. Do this 9 times.

Gently as you complete these cycles you will notice your breath getting quiet. It is getting very deep. Deep and slow. Breathing in you know that you are breathing in a long gentle compassionate breath. Breathing out you know you are breathing out a slow breath. Soon the breath will be without effort and you will not even know you are breathing! Don’t panic your still alive just enjoy this simplicit natural embryonic breathing. A gentle peace will definately come over you.

Never rush this or expect anything. Simply let the Dao or lot God or Emptiness or the Universe do it for you. Don’t let your ego parade over what is happening or what is not happening. Don’t let the ego tell you when you should be experiencing this stillness. When you find that your ego is trying to rush the process simply say to yourself “I will let the Dao do it for me”. The Dao is the Formless Reality or your Deepest Nature. It is Siva, it is God, it is ULtimate Reality. Allow this life force or the One Life to do it through you. So don’t beat yourself up. In Taoism a let of emphases is on NON EFFORT!

Enjoy be healthy and be love

Peace and love for eternity always

-Juan

NOTE:

Much of this technique was taken from the book “The Way of Qigong-The Art and Science of Chinese Energy Healing” by Kenneth S. Cohen a western Taoist. I have worded the technique in my own wording.

Well everyone has already been singing it’s praises, but this game deserves a few more.

Yes, if you like RPGs (especially from Bioware) you will know what to expect. I’ve seen some comments around to the tune of “it’s not innovate”. Here’s something those of you who say this may want to think about: Players who buy RPGs stick with them for that very reason. It is a genre, a style of gameplay, a game design that appeals to a certain audience of players. I’m all for RPGs that do bring something very new and fresh to the scene, but I can also appreciate a very well done game that sticks to the formula.

DAO …I am only about 10 hours into it and I’m probably not very good (though I haven’t hit any walls yet), but this is just thoroughly engaging for me. It is always refreshing to get back to an RPG that doesn’t forget to tell you the story, immerse you in, and make you intrisically part of it. The guidance in game that I will call the Bioware Experience is always just so well done. They don’t give you the story and ask you to take or leave it. Your character is the story. Everywhere you go the story follows. Everyone you talk to is involved. Every thing you do affects it. This is what role-playing games ought always be, but we all know that’s just not so.

One of my favorite parts of the game is actually the NPC dialog. Walking through towns, you get to hear the characters gossip, chanters giving speeches, soldiers talking about the coming battles ….and your own party bickering at each other. Sheer hilarity, extremely well done. This is arguably my favorite part of the game: Engaging in dialog. I’m one of those players that talks to everyone in every city, even if they tell me to go away. But since every choice I make impacts the shaping of my character I have found myself needing to be cautious about my nosiness.

I am not sure why but I bought this game for my X360 and ask myself everyday if i want to get it for PC instead. The menus are just too complicated on console, though I think still a pretty nice job. Right now it’s time to put more hours into the game. I’ll report back with much more thorough feedback at the 20 hour mark!

Synopsis (very early draft, will change post release of DA:O):
When the latest Blight arrived, the city and its inhabitants were not prepared. Pushed by the Darkspawns into an underground refuge, a large group of survivors from all origins is trying to wait it out, praying the Maker for help. Refusing defeat, some of them find strange writings and a secret passage leading to what seems to be an age old doorway: one of the Wells of the Maker as painted in the ancient texts of the Chantry…

As the Darkspawn finally break through the defenses and the battle rages everywhere, the Well comes to life and soon the refugees have no choice but to enter what seems to be a portal away from the Blight.

Now safe, the survivors are however in a foreign environment, apparently completely cut off from the surface. While the Well of the Maker remains mute, they are forced to explore and try to survive, facing racial and religious tensions, famine and power-struggles. But what sleeps in the depth of what they now call their home may prove to be a threat even bigger than the Blight itself…

Design concept:
Season based project, with episodic content. Each episode will focus around one particular issue that the character can solve within 3-5 hours as well as a season overall plot.

Attualmente non ci sono ancora date sul rilascio di questo interessanto MOD, sempre se mai riuscirà a finirlo

I think this means my honeymoon with Dragon Age: Origins is over. This post is subtitled: Murder Your Darlings, from the writing principle that if you ever write (or design) something you think is way great!!11oneone then you should probably delete it, stat. Or at least make it much, much shorter.

* * * WARNING: Contains some spoilers * * *

They're like sheep. Sheep with magical powers!

Over the weekend I finally started the plot section that involves freeing the Circle of Magi from whatever it is some silly mage has unleashed upon it. You know what mages’ greatest weakness is? Their geek-like inability to ever believe anything can go wrong. “What, one tiny slip and the whole world will go up like a Roman candle and everyone will die horribly? 99% chance that this will happen? Noooo worries, we’ll just trust in the 1% — the odds are in our favour!” Actually, as a species they tend to remind me of Sir Didymus in Labyrinth, only less fuzzy and forgivably cute.

Stupid mages.

Because of them, my character has spent 4+ game hours trekking through depressingly identical corridors in a variety of shapes. Sure, the Fade is impressive when you first get there, and it’s creepy and you never quite know what’s going to be around the next corner. 200+ corners later, you really don’t give much of a shit anymore and just wish stuff would rush you in one big lump so you could slice & dice them and get it over with.

Sometimes it’s a burning corner and I have to change to the right shape. Sometimes it’s a teeny tiny hole, and I have to change to the right shape. Sometimes it’s a big heavy door and… you get the idea.

Again, being able to shapechange was way cool when it first happened. 200+ corners and changes later… not so much. Actually, it just becomes a pain in the ass because the game seems to have been designed to ensure that you have to change shape as often as possible, not for any major plot reason but just to ram you with the fact that, hey, you have to change shape. Isn’t it way cool?!?!

I get it already. Way clever design. Now let me the hell out of here, I’m bored titless. Oh, and you can keep Wynne too, that self-righteous droning wannabe D&D cleric. I’ll be getting Morrigan back into my party as soon as I get out of this place. She may be pissy and pricklier than a hedgehog, but at least she doesn’t sound like I should be getting a pen out and taking notes because what she says is so damned marvellous and important.

(Don’t ask me what poor Wynne did. Nothing, really, except that she was the first I found in the Fade and she faffed about being … well, faffy, all this after half a dozen stern lectures on “I really don’t think this is the time” and “Don’t you suppose we should be moving on?” and “Is this really relevant to our predicament?” My dwarf doesn’t have a huge reservoir of patience to begin with, and being patronised is something I — err, I mean she — doesn’t deal with very well. If you’re going to blab on about how people have to be strong and upright and yadda yadda, then at least make sure you don’t fall prey to the first nightmare that conks you over the head. Really.)

My main bone of contention with this section, in case it wasn’t abundantly clear already, is that it’s just too long. The creepy temple in the mountains was long, and the creepy temple in the forest was long, but they were at least marginally varied in terms of terrain and, more to the point, I wasn’t stuck in them alone with no way to go anywhere else till the damn section is done.

Oh, I get that I can’t leave before the plot bit is done — it would be stupid to do so. This is a plot segment that must be done in one sitting, and wouldn’t make any sense any other way. My point, though, is that it goes on MUCH too long. The fact that there are eleventy-billion stat increase thingies scattered all over the place just makes it obvious that this is a very long maze and that I am a very bored rat. Or mouse, in this case.

And you know, I don’t actually bore easily. As I mentioned before I didn’t get bored in the other long exploration thingies; it’s not the exploration in itself, and it’s not being stuck in one plot loop. But, relative to the other parts of the game that I’ve experienced, this one has gone on too long because I’ve stopped being enchanted and have instead started getting both bored and irritated.

Fade section — great idea. Hugely long fade section where you have to backtrack a thousand times, cover the same ground in different forms, and generally go down the same corridor à la Dr Who a thousand times? REALLY BAD IDEA.

Shapechanging — great idea! Having to spend 3 seconds as a mouse to get through a hole then 3 seconds as a burny skelly thing to get through a fire and then 3 seconds as a golem to get through a door, 10 seconds down a hallway and then rinse repeat — REALLY BAD IDEA.

Apparently gamers shouldn’t presume to give opinions or advice to developers, but here’s one from me anyway. (I’ve always been real bad at doing what I’m told.)

If you have a fantastic, great, really way cool!!! idea — kill it. Now. Or at least severely maim it before you allow it to become a bloated festering nastiness in your game. Players will put up with almost anything for almost any length of time, but boredom will send them fleeing.

There’s a lot of talk about centering, like it’s some mystical trick. Try throwing a pot. There’s nothing mystical about it, but it isn’t easily mastered either.

Throwing a pot requires making the clay a perfectly centered cylinder with your hands. You know it when the clay is centered. Or, more accurately, you feel it when the clay is centered, because it’s slipping through your hands evenly and without resistance. It’s a delicate pleasure, a real confirmation.

It’s possible for a bowl that started off centered to go off-center later. Sometimes it means that the clay has been overworked and it’s sagging. Sometimes, it means that the potter wasn’t paying attention and his or her hands weren’t steady. Is it the clay’s fault? No, it’s the potter’s fault when a bowl doesn’t say on-center. The clay is just—well—clay. Mud dug out of the ground. If it doesn’t take shape, it’s the maker’s fault.

So it is with the changes of our lives. They are mere clay around us. Whether we make the changes around us into anything meaningful is a matter of how centered we are, and whether we work things within the limits of what they can do. People are called fantastic merely because they understand this principle.

When I was a boy, I saw my mother blown off her feet by an exploding kiln. Being an artist was no easy thing.

A bowl that has been allowed to dry must still be fired in a kiln. If fired correctly, it vitrifies, meaning that it will hold water. The bowls are stacked in the kiln on ceramic shelves, each layer improvised by resting the heavy shelves on ceramic columns of various heights. Firing can take hours, and in the famous hillside kilns of Asia, they sometimes took days.

The potter places cones—narrow ceramic wedges that will melt and droop at a predetermined temperature—in the kiln. During the firing, small peepholes are opened to see these cones, now in an atmosphere orange-hot. When they finally droop, the kiln is turned off. It takes hours more for the kiln to cool. If a kiln is opened too soon, the sudden rush of cool air will make the bowls contract too quickly and they will break.

Further disappointments often happen when a kiln is unstacked. The worse situation is when a bowl shatters, sending shards like shrapnel into neighboring bowls. Or maybe a shelf broke or fell. In the best of situations though, there is the magic of holding a bowl one has been laboring on for so long. Its weight and shape become a pleasure and a great satisfaction.

Patience. It’s such a hard thing. But if we pay attention to the work we do and the secrets of that work, then patience is a practical thing.
