Estamos próximos ao último show da turne do album “Dark Passion Play” da banda Nightwish, eu compareci ao Show em São Paulo no ano passado, e posso fazer uma comparação com outros shows da banda aqui, pois estive em diversos.

Nightwish

Primeiro sobre este Álbum, o “Dark Passion Play” e muito interessante, pois a banda conseguiu apresentar uma fórmula de não decepcionar os fãs mesmo trazendo a frente uma vocalista muito mais fraca tecnicamente, os arranjos foram simplesmente perfeitos, e a participação do vocal masculino trouxe um pouco mais de peso ao som.

A nova vocalista da banda – Anette Olzon, foi realmente uma surpresa, apesar da grande diferença entre ela e Tarja Turunen, seu vocal foi bem treinado e mostrou durante os shows o espirito da banda, como se fossem amigos há décadas, seu nervosismo pesou, os fãs brasileiro não ajudaram em nada, e eu francamente fiquei com vergonha alheia pelos fãs que gritaram o nome da antiga vocalista.

A turne em geral foi simples, sem grandes shows e noticias, o espírito da banda parece estar vivo, porém agora os fãs esperam um novo trabalho com muito mais presença, sem a desculpa da adaptação do som a nova vocalista, sem mencionar o pouco tempo de ensaio e preparação em geral, espera-se do novo Album um som mais maduro, pois este vai ser decisivo para o futuro da banda.

Por um lado eles podem manter o mesmo estilo, e segurar seus fãs por mais alguns anos, por outro lado a banda pode mostrar um novo estilo, um som mais pesado e mais maduro, podendo se firmar inclusive estourar novamente como fez com o album “Nemo”, essa parece ser a decisão correta… afinal, dificilmente uma pessoa consegue ouvir “Metal Melódico” para sempre.

I am proud to announce the first review on the Voice Within. I am now a critic. I will be reviewing books, CDs, TV shows, etc. So I am proud to give the honor of my first album review to the debut album of Tarja Turunen, the former lead singer of Nightwish.

After being fired from Nightwish, Tarja released her solo album My Winter Storm, the same year as Nightwish’s album Dark Passion Play, with their new singer Anette – what a coincidence. I purchased My Winter Storm over the summer and I have listened to it non stop. It begins with the soft prelude “Ite, Missa, Est” and then the Requiem inspired song “I Walk Alone.” This song is quite powerful and Tarja’s voice sounds even better than it did in Nightwish. That song is followed by “Lost Northern Star.” This song is all about the guitars. I love it. I love all of the hard rock songs on her album. My Little Phoenix (and the prelude Escape of the Doll), Poison – a cover of the Alice Cooper song, and Die Alive. Die Alive is my favorite. I especially enjoy the middle of the song with the choir chanting and the horns in the background – it is so epic, and it sends chills down my spine!

I also like the powerful ballads such as The Reign (and the prelude Seeking for the Reign), Boy and the Ghost, Min0r Heaven, Sing for Me, and Damned and Divine. They are all very powerful, and Tarja and her excellent team of songwriters put a lot of thought and originallity in to each song. There is a son that is very special as well, called Oasis, which is actually in Finnish despite the name. It is very quiet and peaceful, and Tarja brings out the best in her voice. Calling Grace is another song like that. That is simply amazing! It is a perfect closing to the album - that is if you don’t have the bonus tracks, Damned and Divine [live], and You Would Have Loved This [live].

There are many reviews out there that express disappointment in My Winter Storm. It is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. In fact, I will admit that I actually like it better than most Nightwish albums. I am singing my praise to this album!!!!

But one song I don’t like is Ciaran’s Well. First of all, it is very awkward. The scream doesn’t come until after like 10 seconds and you don’t expect it. It made me jump the first time! Tarja’s voice is a bit annoying at the end too, if anyone liked the song enough to get to the end. But that is really my only complaint. 

Over all, it is an amazing album. Turunen does an amazing job combining several genres such as classical, baroque, rock, metal, and others. I cannot wait for her new album in 2010. Peace out everyone.

Incredibile quante volte è stato visto il video di Amaranth su Youtube.. 29 milioni!! Non è affatto facile per un video qualsiasi, figuriamoci per un video musicale di una band metal! Certo, Amaranth è una canzone abbastanza accessibile, ma sicuramente è il risultato di una campagna di pubblicità su Youtube della casa discografica. E ovviamente, il risultato della magia dei Nightwish! Se siamo arrivati a 29, perchè non andare avanti? Per diffondere il Verbo si passa anche da questo! Nightwish – Dark Passion Play (2cd)

Nigdy nie byłem fanem Nightwisha. Można rzec, że ich muzyka mnie wręcz odrzucała. Jednak pewnego jesiennego dnia, w roku pańskim 2007, zobaczyłem w telewizji teledysk do utworu “Amaranth”. Skojarzyłem, gdyż zdarza mi się czytywać prasę muzyczną, że w zespole doszło do zmiany wokalistki. Postanowiłem więc na własne uszy przekonać się, jak wpłynie to na moją recepcję ich muzyki. Pierwszy odsłuch był obiecujący – dotrwałem do końca klipu, nie krzywiąc się przy tym. Potem było już tylko lepiej…

W ciągu kilku najbliższych dni doszło do tego, iż katowałem ten teledysk, ile tylko się dało, potem doszedł do niego następny, aż w końcu, gdy tylko do sklepów muzycznych trafił nowy krążek Finów (i Szwedki:D), udałem się pewnego salonu, by zdobyć również swoją kopię. Choć była to na swój sposób karkołomna decyzja, nie mogę jej żałować.

Część właściwą recenzji zacznę może od stwierdzenia, jakim rodzajem muzyki jest ów krążek wypełniony. Chciałoby się rzec, iż bardzo dobrym, ale na razie ograniczę się do tego, że jest to symfoniczny metal (w dodatkowe szufladkowanie nie będę się bawił) z (głównie) żeńskimi wokalami autorstwa niejakiej Anette Olzon, która zastąpiła wyrzuconą z zespołu fińską pseudodivę, Tarję Turunen. To, że ta Pani pokonała w wyścigu o tę posadę kilka tysięcy innych kandydatek, wcale mnie nie dziwi.:) Czasem dochodzi do takich zmian takie zmiany, które potrafią wyjść na lepsze.

Początek albumu może na to nie wskazywać, gdyż naszych uszu dobiega łagodny śpiew jakiegoś chłopca. Potem jednak w ścianę wbijają orkiestracje, podziw wzbudza równie łatwo “zagnieżdżający się” w głowie, co świetnie zaśpiewany refren i wiele innych, często zestawionych ze sobą na zasadzie skrajności elementów, które budują pierwszą, niemal czternastominutową kompozycję na płycie – “The poet and the pendulum”. Następnie mamy singlowe “Bye, bye beautiful”, będące rozliczeniem frontmana zespołu, Tuomasa Holopainena, z poprzednią wokalistką, czyli kompozycję, która jest dość pretensjonalna w warstwie tekstowej, nie zachwyca niczym pod względem muzycznym, a jeśli chodzi o aspekt wokalny, to wyśpiewane przez basistę grupy, Marco Hietalę, refreny mogą lekko irytować. Po nim następuje kolejny singiel, “Amaranth”, tym razem jest to rzecz znacząco lepsza, z ładną melodią i nie gorszymi od niej wokalami.

Ogólnie rzecz biorąc cała płyta jest poprzelatana kompozycjami świetnymi i przeciętnymi, żeby nie powiedzieć słabymi. I tak: mamy pachnące lekko thrashem, podbarwione monumentalnym refrenem z udziałem chóru, acz nudne i pozbawione ciekawych pomysłów “Master passion greed” (wygląda na to, że to znów szpila wycelowana w serce [albo inny organ] Pani Turunen), a z drugiej strony takie “For the heart I once had” – kompozycję, którą otwiera (podobno) kiczowaty wstęp, a cała (podobno)  jest prowieniencji popowej, zaś ja – za każdym razem, gdy ją słyszę – myślę o tym, że gdybym tylko umiał, to postawiłbym Pani Olzon ołtarzyk.;) Zresztą nie zawodzi ona w żadnej kompozycji. Dość powiedzieć, że najsłabsze są te, w których albo nie usłyszymy owej Pani (np. instrumentalne “Last of the wilds” – kompozycja zagrana na irlandzką nutę), albo udziela się ona jedynie w tle (jak w “The islander” – mdłej, popowej pioseneczce, która w dodatku chyba ma udawać szantę). Na szczęście (i dla mnie, i dla płyty) te utwory są w mniejszości.:)

Osobną kwestią jest brzmienie. Nagranie płyty kosztowało podobno ok. 500 tysięcy euro, co uczyniło ją najdroższą w historii fińskiej fonografii. Ale wydatek z pewnością się opłacił, gdyż jest ono potężne. Orkiestra (kilkadziesiąt osób) i dwa chóry (w tym jeden gospel) nadają kompozycjom monumentalności i patosu, który na szczęście nie jest nazbyt nabrzmiały. Całość natomiast brzmi klarownie i selektywnie, choć gitary są niekiedy lekko “utemperowane”, by nie przerazić mniej zahartowanego w metalowych bojach słuchacza.:D

Miałem  taki okres, iż byłem niemal uzależniony od tego krążka. Potem odstawiłem go (haha, jak to brzmi:D) na około rok, by nabrać do niego dystansu i muszę stwierdzić, że nadal odbieram tę płytę niezwykle pozytywnie. Choć bardzo wiele “mhrocznych” nastolatek będzie lamentować, że to już nie to samo, że bez Tarji to żaden Nightwish, ja uparcie obstawiam przy tym, iż zespół wiele zyskał dzięki zmianie wokalistki. Najprościej mówiąc, lepiej pasuje ona (przynajmniej moim zdaniem) do wykonywanej przez grupę muzyki. Zresztą ze świecą szukać kogoś obdarzonego odpowiedniejszym i lepszym głosem.:P A najlepsze jest to, że  w tym składzie Nightwish stać na nagranie jeszcze znakomitszego krążka, czego sobie i Państwu życzę.

I have been obsessed with Nightwish’s “new” album Dark Passion Play (new meaning… released in 2007). They have a new album planned for 2010. Dark Passion Play was their first album without their (former) lead vocalist Tarja Turunen, but featuring (new) lead vocalist Anette Olzon. Tarja had a great voice, but Nightwish found an excellent replacement with Anette.

This song, “Bye Bye Beauttiful” makes it painfully obvious there was some serious drama behind-the-scenes with Nightwish dropping Tarja. Plus, it is a great song:

Ascultam mai devreme Nightwish si ma tot gandeam care dintre variantele trupei e mai buna? Varianta cu solista veche sau aia cu solista noua? Stilu’ ala vechi sau asta nou? Eu sincer sa fiu nu i-am dat de capat la problema asta. In caz ca nu stiati cate ceva despre ei sau chiar nu ati auzit veci de Nightwish (sa fim seriosi… se poate?), e o trupa de metal simfonic din “The great North” mai precis, Finlanda. Unii considera ca pe vremea asta , Nightwish spargeau toate topurile. Au scos 5 albume intitulate : “Angels fall first” in 1997, “Oceanburn” in 1998, “Wishmaster”in 2000, “Century Child” in 2002 si “Once” in 2004. Pe atunci abordau un stil care ducea putin spre un gothic , doom , simfonic. In 2005 o intervenit schimbarea odata cu concedierea Tarjei.

Dupa 2 ani de stat si cautat, au venit cu Anette Olzon pentru voce. Calitati vocale foarte bune, dar un stil total diferit. Din cauza asta o trebuit sa isi schimbe putin abordarea privind genu’. Tenta aia spre gothic cam dispare si devine un fel de pop-rock dupa cum zic gurile rele. Altii  zic ca dupa ce Tarja a parasit trupa, Nightwish a murit, dar eu zic ca desi si-au schimbat stilu’ muzical putin, Nightwish e tot Nightwish. Instrumentalele sunt la fel de bune ca inainte. Dupa schimbarea solistei, Nightwish au scos doar un album, “Dark Passion Play” in 2007, da’ din cate am auzit mai lucreaza la unu’.

Prompted by the recent announcement of the first bands lined up to be playing at this year’s Metalcamp, I convinced myself it would be a good idea to listen to the new Nightwish album.

I call it ‘new’ – actually, Dark Passion Play came out in 2005. That’s how long I’ve been resisting change. Basically, they kicked out their first singer, the lovely, man-jawed and (apparently) commercially-focused Tarja, to replace her with a new, non-operatic singer. I remained convinced for the last four years (has it really been that long?!) that the operatic aspect of Nightwish was what distinguised them from all the other nondescript female-fronted symphonic metal bands (that, and the jaw), and that if I listened to this new album I would inevitably be disappointed.

Then I thought, nothing could possibly disappoint me more than the new Metallica album, so I’ll give it a go. How bad can it be?

As it transpires, not that bad. Tuomas is still writing the vast majority of the music, as far as I’m aware, and so the non-vocal aspects of the tracks have retained the same high quality, and the new singer really isn’t that terrible. She’s ideal for the new direction they’ve taken, although I’ll maintain that the operatic aspect is a loss, and that the new style is a little too dull and commercial sounding for me – but my ‘dull and commercial’ is probably someone else’s ‘accessible and easy-to-listen-to’ so it’s not a criticism per-se.

What IS a criticism is that thing she does with her head in the video for Amaranth. I HATE it.

Mereka memenangkan kontes tersebut berdasarkan pooling telephon tetapi juri tidak setuju, sehingga mereka hanya meraih juara ke-2.

Tarja meninggalkan band pada tahun 2005 setelah tour “End of Era”. Pada tahun 2007, penyanyi asal Swedia “Anette Olzon dipilih untuk menjadi vokalis baru. Kemudian mereka meluncurkan single, “Amaranth“, dan beberapa bulan kemudian mereka mengeluarkan album baru berjudul “Dark Passion Play“.

I’ve always been a sucker for handwritten letters (snail mail as it has come to be called in recent times). Call me an old-fashioned idiot (who happens to be a ‘techie’ <- whatever that’s supposed to mean, and spend a minimum of twelve hours a day seated in front of a PC and e-mails most of her acquaintances, and updates her blog more often than her diary/journal/secret diary – et al… **fine! I’m guilty of that here!**), but I find something extraordinarily personal about a handwritten mail! That I’ve ceased to receive any since the time we got our internet connection some fifteen years ago (before which I, honestly, used to write to my aunt and paternal grandmum – childish scribbles more like it) doesn’t really matter. I remember the odd letter when a friend and I decided that it was crappy to e-mail each other, and I believe we sent each other exactly two letters before we decided it was crappy to waste time in doing that when we could just get on the phone and talk for hours together – our excuse at the time was not just the ‘wasting of time’ but also ’saving trees’. I also wrote to my lawyer friend (who just, btw, landed a spectacular job at Amarchand Mangaldas – the best law firm in the country!! So proud of her!!) a few times but even that stopped after…3 letters, I think. Anyway, letters feel so nice. So pleasurable even.

Deciphering the writing itself gives me so much joy! So when my sister, the one who recently moved to Athens, GA, for her undergraduate studies, told us that she had her own personal mailbox at her on-campus apartment like dorm my reaction was “I’ll write to you!!”. Sure, her telling us about this was snide and had an ulterior motive laced through it – that she made a point of telling us that it was a “pretty good mailbox…has the capacity to hold a palm size box” told us that she expected more than cards but admitted that she would be content with letters too. So here I sit, writing to her. It’s presently five pages long and it’s just ranting. Plain old ranting. Stuff that I’ve already spoken to her about, asked her about. Yet, I’m writing it. And I know she’ll enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

See, that’s the pleasure part that very few understand. The written word. I’ve nothing against e-mailing people, truly, because now I do it on an hourly basis. Just that, at times it feels good to revert to the age old methods… sigh. <I seem to be getting sentimental about odd things these days!!> When I first started writing – I’m talking about my novel ideas here – I would spend hours together penning thoughts and then decide that it was absolute crap that I’d churned out (I do that now too…at my laptop…and then when I decide it’s not worth it, I simply hit Shift+Del) I would take immense pleasure in ripping the sheets to tiny bits and watch my ideas fall to the ground. Once I even burned some twenty sheets using the flame of a candle and watched it fall to my feet in ashes. That helped in the thinking process, because I used to find it easier to put out newer ideas after that..things that hadn’t crossed my mind before. Besides, like I said before, it gives everything I write a personal touch.

We grow with time and in the current drive of things, it pays to keep in sync with the modernization of lifestyle. It helps at times when nothing else does. My conclusion? I would rather type out things than to spend time writing out stuff (because I can type faster than I write), but when it comes to stuff that matter…I would rather see words of my contorted hand than typed letters.

P.S. Cadence of Her Last Breath – Nightwish a brilliant song. MUST LISTEN!! I just can’t get enough of it!

With its new vocalist, Anette Olzon, Nightwish is definitely back. After their new album in 2007, Dark Passion Play, the legendary Finnish symphonic metal band took on the world with a tour. For those who have missed it or couldn’t get enough of Nightwish (like vampire hunger for blood, I know I did), the wait is finally over. The DVD records some pre-show footage and the live concert at The Enmore Theatre Sydney (why does it always have to be the concert in Australia? Remember Christina Aguilera’s Back To Basics: Live and Down Under?)

This is the third music video from their newest album Dark Passion Play. The lead singer for this single is not Anette though (no, not Tarja either!), but Marco. If you’re familiar with Nightwish, it’s no doubt that Marco is good at heavy metal and hard rock. Yet I was never sure about him with songs like this (remember his scary performance in “While Your Lips Are Still Red”?) He truly delivered in this song though, showing he can sing outside his comfort zone. Reminds me of how Tarja always sings as if she’s telling a story. Rock on, Marco.

Nightwish doet goede zaken. De Finnen zouden dit voorjaar in de Ancienne Belgique in Brussel concerteren maar gezien de tickets in geen tijd de deur uit waren, werd het optreden naar de grotere Lotto Arena in Antwerpen verplaatst. Het concert, dat nu zondag plaatsvindt, is intussen helemaal uitverkocht, meldt concertorganisator Live Nation. Het Finse Nightwish brengt symphonische heavy metal die opgefleurd wordt door een ijzersterke vrouwenstem. “Dark Passion Play”, het zesde studioalbum van Nightwish, ligt intussen in de winkels. Op zondag 6 juli treedt de groep aan op de Main Stage van Rock Werchter.
