LOS ANGELES, 7 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Produtora: Digital Extremes

Publisher: D3 Publisher

Plataformas: Xbox 360 (Testada), PS3 e PC

Site Oficial: http://www.darksector.com/

Pontos positivos:

+ Controle da Glaive é muito legal

+ Os poderes do Hayden adicionam variedade a jogabilidade.

+ Os controles respondem muito bem

Pontos negativos:

Risen, due for release in October for PC and 360, is the latest game banned in Australia, given the dreaded “refused classification” tag by the Aussie Classification Board.

The offending game Risen, by Gothic developers Piranha Bytes, is a third person Role Playing Game (RPG) that apparently contains “sexual activity and drug use related to incentives or rewards.”

According to the US Ratings board:

During the course of the game, players can interact with prostitutes (referred to as “whores” in the game) at a local brothel.

Players can trigger a lengthy dialogue to engage in their services; sexual activity is strongly implied, but never depicted on screen.

Many of the characters in the game smoke a fictional drug called “brugleweed.” The “wood reefer” plant is described as having a mild relaxing effect on users, and can be bought, sold, and used by players. Some profanity (e.g., “f*ck” and “sh*t”) can be heard in the dialogue.

Risen has fallen foul of censors

The problem in Australia is that we still do not have an R18+ rating for games, though we do in film, and so this means the game gets “refused classification” making it illegal to purchase or own here.

Australian distributors of the game, Madman Interactive, now have to see if the creators will change Risen enough to pass the Australian classification system into MA 15+, which is the highest current rating a game can be given.

This is always an iffy proposition as Australia is a very small gaming market anyway.

I’ve said it before, but the fact is that the average age for the Australian gamer is now 30 years old, according to a recent study by Bond University, Queensland. Yet we live in the dark ages where, while film is rated with R-ratings for content inappropriate for younger viewers, games are not.

Besides the issue of censorship and an adult’s right to choice, there is simply the issue that the current antiquated system is too inflexible to properly classify games by content. Games full of violence and gore (eg. chainsaw killings) pass into MA 15+ category, but some games with implied sex and drug use are banned.

Swearing was huge in the Wii game House Of The Dead: Overkill and 50 Cent: Blood On The Sand, but they passed. Implied sex has been in a number of games including Fable, and prostitution has been in the GTA series.

As Tom Crago, President of the Game Developers Association of Australia, as well as working in the game development field as CEO of Tantalus software, said recently:

It’s ridiculous because it assumes that games are fundamentally different to film and outrageous in that it assumes that adults shouldn’t be allowed to access adult content in video games.

And of course it is a fundamentally broken system in that games that should be classified R are being shoehorned into the [MA 15+] classification, which means you get a 16 or 15 year old, who really shouldn’t be able to play a particular type of game actually able to play that game, under the age of 18.

While we don’t know exactly what content irked the board in this game beyond what has been said, the fact is that there needs to be an adult-only category (R18+ rating) where games with any adult content are classified, as it is in most of the world.

Currently games like Dead Space which are classified 18 overseas have been put in the MA 15+ category here, simply because we don’t have an R rating.

No R18 + rating means banning

Remember Dark Sector being banned here for its violent content until it was changed? That game was nowhere near as violent as some games before it or since.

These inconsistencies will see future games continue to meet the same fate as Risen.

We were promised a say last year, but that doesn’t look likely.

Dark Sector is a shooter published by D3 Publishers of America (PS3 and 360) or Aspyr Media (PC), available for download from Direct2Drive. It released March 25, 2008, and uses the Evolution Engine. It uses a third person, over the shoulder, camera. Okay, enough facts.

Dark Sector is about a Hayden Tenno, a commando sent into an Eastern European city where he is attacked and infected with the Technocyte Virus, a bioweapon that gives him extraordinary powers.

The graphics are good, bordering on terrific. If I had to pick at them, I’d pick on them for the lighting. Important items are picked out for you in the game with a glimmer of light, usually when the camera first looks at them. The trouble is, the lighting can make anything glimmer with light, depending on camera motion and angle. The controls are simple and they respond well, which I find unusual in a console game ported to the PC. Hayden gains powers gradually, so you have time to learn each new control. The storyline isn’t particularly gripping, but serviceable. The sound is fine on my machine, and they provide an option that I find very important in a game – the option for subtitles! Since the voice channel doesn’t work on my machine (something I find extremely common on console ports), the subtitles are vital.

Where the game really succeeds, for me, is in the challenge it presents. I’ll never be a hotshot FPS player, but I’ve been playing shooters since the original Castle Falkenstein. I love the goofy ones like Duke Nukem 3D and Serious Sam, and the serious ones, like Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, and Modern Warfare. So I expect to be challenged by a game, even on the easiest setting. That being said, I want the hope that I can succeed. When I played through the original Call of Duty game, I cheated my way through the Normandy Landing sequence because I couldn’t see any hope of succeeding. Where Dark Sector shines is in always giving me the hope that if I try something just a little different the next time, I will succeed – and without a cheat code. I love that in a game!

Where the game fails is in maps and puzzles. The maps are fairly simple, single-path entities. There’s one way through, and you’ll just have to deal with the gantlet of enemies. You can sometimes run past them, but you can’t avoid them altogether. The puzzles can be fun, but are often frustrating because they require secret knowledge to get past them. For example, there’s no way to know that the only way to destroy a power armor opponent is to first destroy the three lights on his armor, or that in one chapter you need electricity to disable a Jackal fighting vehicle so you can pull the driver out and take command. I find that I sometimes need to log out, look up the solution online, and then start play again.

IGN gives it 7.7 (good), and GameSpot gives it 7.5. I might go as high as an 8, but in general I think the reviews are accurate. If you enjoy satisfying shooter combat, Dark Sector is worth a look – especially since most places have it discounted now.

This is a review of Dark Sector, a third person action game for the Xbox360, Playstation3, and PC.

This is a review of Dark Sector, a third person action game for the Xbox360, Playstation3, and PC. The game was developed by Digital Extremes, and released in North America on March 25th, 2008.

Story

Dark Sector’s storyline is definitely the game’s weakest link by far. It takes place in a fictional Eastern European nation called Lasria. You play as Hayden Tenno, a CIA agent tasked with taking out a terrorist who is planning to release a biological infection across the planet. Unfortunately, the storyline seems to flag behind from this point forward. Hayden is soon infected with the virus by the man he is trying to kill. The infection turns its victims into mutated creatures with metallic skin which hardens over time. There is really no coherent explanation given as to why he was infected in the first place. This symptom continues to bog down the remainder of the games plot. Characters come and go, with plenty of hints about their background with Hayden and the storyline; the problem is that the hints are never followed by revelations. This leaves most of the game’s dramatic moments feeling more than a bit flat.

While the cut scenes are well done and the voice acting is fantastic, the plot itself is so ill-paced that you tend not to care, as the motivations of the characters—including Hayden Tenno himself—are usually only hinted at, instead of being clearly shown. This is too bad, because the ideas the developers were playing around with had a lot of potential.

Audio/Visual

Dark Sector is a fantastic looking game. The levels are dark, gritty, and intense. The lighting in the game is the real stand out though, with subtly employed effects adding intensity and depth to fairly standard environments. Shadows are dark enough that you’ll want to avoid them when fighting. Being in a poorly lit room has a significant impact on the gameplay; and the developers obviously designs several of the combat scenarios around that.

The audio is decent, with firearms sounding appropriately powerful, and the pleading cries of enemies on the business end of your glaive make finishing moves and “finesse” kills feel much more visceral and satisfying. The music is nothing special, but doesn’t get in the way, either.

Mechanics

Hayden is a certified badass, no doubt about it. He stalks Dark Sector’s levels like a hunting panther. While only starting with a pistol and some attitude, Hayden quickly receives his most important upgrade; what amounts of a giant throwing star called the Glaive. Battles are well paced and strategic, forcing you to use the environment and number of enemies to determine your tactics.

Hayden uses a combination of firearms—which can be purchased and upgraded through the game’s “black market” system—and the glaive to defeat his foes. You’re presented with a range of pretty standard guns to choose from, including handguns, assault rifles, and shotguns. The black market works well enough, but can also feel somewhat clunky. The firearms feel satisfying and appropriately powerful. That being said, the glaive is where the real action is at in Dark Sector, and is one of the more unique aspects of the game. Early on you’ll receive an upgrade which lets you control the glaive once you’ve throw it, allowing you to perform some awesome multiple kills. You can also dish out some brutal melee finishers when fighting in close.

The combat is definitely Dark Sector’s strong suit. It feels like you’re given an ever expanding tool box, with each of the tools feeling useful at different times, depending on the situation. The upgrades in the game generally work well, because they improve your capabilities without constantly forcing you to learn new weapons and powers. Each upgrade is basically a natural progression of what you can already do. By the end of the game, you’re combat prowess has grown by orders of magnitude.

The gameplay in Dark Sector is executed well enough to fuel your progression through the main storyline. Yet that doesn’t make the lack of a well told story any less of a bummer. While there is a multiplayer component in Dark Sector, I haven’t really spent any time with it and feel no interest in doing so. Based on other reviews and my own experiences with the game, the single player experience is definitely what the developers put their time and energy into.

In a Nutshell

Dark Sector is far from a perfect game. It suffers from some pretty bad pacing issues. What could have been a decent story comes across so disjointed that you end up feeling apathetic about it. The movement controls for Hayden can be kind of sticky sometimes, and there is also some occasional bad level design to content with now and again. However, none of these flaws are deal breakers for the game. When Dark Sector works, it works extremely well. It has some of the best third person combat this generation; with each of Hayden’s skills and weapons remaining useful and satisfying throughout the game. It has a great visual style to it, as well as some very creepy atmosphere. If you’re a fan of games like Dead Space or Gears of War, you’re going to be in familiar territory with this one.

It would have been great to see some kind of “instant action” mode where you can experience more of the game’s terrific combat without having to subject yourself to the main storyline a second time. Dark Sector does have enough original charm to remain a decent and memorable action game in its own right. If you have the dough to pick it up used, you should definitely give it a shot. Happy hunting!

Editors Note: This top 5 is not in any specific order.

Bioshock – what can i say about this awesome game… By far one of the BEST storylines ever. From the first level to the defeat of atlas, this game was just awesome. I have to say that this game was so fun that i beat it 3 times, once with only my wrench, just to try it.

Assassin’s creed – There is some debate about this game being repetitive, but honestly it isn’t that repetitive. The storyline was very interesting, and the ending was very unexpected, the only thing that got annoying was that near the end of the game you would be suspected for just walking without blending… but i have to say the amount of things you could grip onto was amazing

Resident Evil 5 – Okay, this is one of the more recent games I have played and other than the graphics this game doesn’t beat the other games by very much. The storyline in this game was very good, although, the ending was kind of expected. The only thing i didn’t really like about this game was that the enemies were very slow. I’m not saying the infected should have been like Left for Dead 4 but if they sped it up just a little it would have been more of a challenge. Also, it might just be the fact that I beat this game 3 times but the storyline really got annoying after a while.

Dark Sector – This game was truely an awesome game. The storyline wasn’t that great and was a little confusing but the game itself was just epic. If they made a second game of this I would totally get it. The glave was so much fun to use and the fact that you could control it and have different effects on it like electricity and fire made it all the better.

Silent Hill: Homecoming – Last, but not least, Silent Hill. This game was one of my favorite games. I bought this game expecting to play about half of it and then selling it, boy was i wrong. The storyline was awesome and couldn’t be better. I liked how you could choose your ending. Some people think this game wasn’t at all scary, but it scared the cr** out of me at times. I would hear an enemy coming towards me and i would turn around and it would attack and i would die.

All these games were really fun to play and had awesome storylines. Hope you read my future post on best multiplayer games. I look forward to posting more. Stay real and keep playin

Time for Part 2, finding ten 360 games you haven’t played but really should. It would be nice if there was no need to write articles like this and all great games got the attention they deserve, but a lot of the financial success of a game is reliant on their marketing budget.

This means if the game isn’t a sequel to an established franchise or isn’t being pimped at trade conventions (like the upcoming E3 for example) it will often be overlooked, so it shouldn’t be surprising that these last five games in the list are all original IPs.

To remind you, the 5 games in Part 1 were: • Infinite Undiscovery, • Overlord, • Eternal Sonata, • Banjo Kazooie: Nuts ‘n’ Bolts and • Condemned: Criminal Origins.

And without any further blabbing about, here’s the final 5 games you should be picking up in the mid-year sales dirt cheap, or trade any games you already own and get them delivered for free (for a timed period) from our affiliate Game Share.

Viking: Battle for Asgard

Now this one is confusing. Viking: Battle For Asgard has all the right ingredients for a commercial smash hit – a huge open world, some beautiful graphics, epic battles and a great setting. So where did it go wrong?

I have absolutely no idea. Recently I managed to get a copy for cheap, and have been loving it ever since.

The environments are often quite stunning, with stormy skies and fantastic lighting as they’re overrun with enemies before opening up to perfect skies once you’ve slaughtered every inhabitant in the most brutal ways possible.

Want to slice off both arms before tearing the torso off into a meaty chunk? Go for it – you’ll be rewarded with more mana.

Along with some Tomb Raider-esque platforming, Viking: Battle For Asgard will keep you entertained for a good long time with solid gameplay and a great world. For fans of God of War or Fable, it should be on your list to buy as you can find it between $25 and $50 now.

A word of warning for PS3 owners though – the PS3 version is unfortunately plagued by technical and framerate issues that get worse as the game goes on, so you might like to avoid this one unless you have a 360.

TimeShift

You may have heard of Sierra Studios Timeshift several years ago, maybe even played the quite underwhelming PC demo that immediately put most people off this title.

Well time to take another look, as after that disastrous showing the team at Saber Interactive went back to the drawing board and gave the game a good overhaul. The result? An enjoyable blaster with some very amusing time powers.

Using the usual time controls of pause, rewind and slow motion you’ll be able to run into one of the large-scale gunfights, pause and shotgun a few soldiers before unpausing and watching them all fly backwards simultaneously.

Then, you might need to quickly rewind to detach that grenade that got stuck to your helmet and watch it return to its sender.

While unashamedly ‘borrowing’ many ideas from Half-Life 2, Halo and any other successful FPS franchise you can name, the end result is a highly competent shooter well worth the $15-$30 you’ll find it for in sales now.

Dark Sector

Digital Illusions’ current-gen debut Dark Sector was at one time, the most anticipated game on the planet. Why? Because it was the first game ever to be announced and shown off for the current generation of consoles.

You can still find the trailer on YouTube, looking like a cross between Unreal and Chronicles of Riddick. After the team realised that the space marine setting was pretty much full to the brim the game was reworked and in the end we got the new Dark Sector.

Well, the rest of the world got Dark Sector. It was banned in Australia due to the use of its signature weapon – the ‘glaive’, a three bladed shuriken-esque boomerang that had the capacity to sever people completely in half.

Through a mixture of this and cover mechanics that pay a lot of homage to Gears of War, Dark Sector received positive reviews with the only real issue being the complete lack of innovation.

But hey, not every game needs to reinvent the wheel. Some like Dark Sector play it safe but still provide a great experience.

After some censorship Dark Sector did get an Australian release with absolutely zero fanfare, so now’s a great time to pick it up for $25-50.

(ED: The “original Dark Sector concept was much deeper and tense than what we gotyy in the end. I would have preferred D3Publishing to contniue with the original style.
Too Human

Now here’s a game that had a high public profile (thanks to the much-publicised lawsuit between developers Silicon Knights and Unreal Engine 3 creators Epic) but was largely ignored on release.

Well, maybe not ignored – more all-out hated. After a massive development schedule covering 3 generations of consoles, when the final result didn’t turn out to be the second coming, it was ripped to shreds by gamers everywhere, whether they’d played it or not.

Critics were nicer – OXCGN’s own review gave it a respectable 7.9/10, indicating it’s a good game but it doesn’t push any boundaries. OXCGN even had a favourable comment from the man himself, Dennis Dyack. Which was a nice surprise.

If you’re looking for a good dungeon crawler with some epic scenery and an interesting twist of sci-fi and norse mythology, Too Human is well worth getting for the $25-50 it can be found at.

While there are some flaws (such as the well-known valkyrie cutscene problem when dying), it’s a lot of fun with a huge amount of armour and weapon customisation and even better in co-op with a friend.

Enchanted Arms

Yes, one more JRPG to finish off the list. Bizarrely, Ubisoft chose to publish Enchanted Arms instead of a Japanese publisher for the launch of the 360.

While everyone was ooh-ing and aah-ing over Oblivion’s world and Dead of Alive 4’s graphics, [eM] -eNCHANT arM- as it was originally known, snuck by under the radar but provided those who found it with a long and satisfying romp through several worlds with a great battle system.

It suffered from the usual launch-game problems of fairly empty environments and making every surface shiny (aaaah…back when shiny = next-gen), but made up for it with combat that played out like a cross between regular turn-based and chess.

You would slowly collect more monsters to fight for you on a grid board that required a fair bit of tactical thought.

The story was interesting and the characters, while overly stereotypical and with the worst fashion sense ever to befall the world of games, were memorable. Enchanted Arms is a great way to bide the time until Final Fantasy XIII and Blue Dragon 2 make their debut. Pick it up for $12-25 easily.

Once again got to warn that the later-ported PS3 version suffers from technical problems so try before you buy for PS3 owners.

Well, that completes the list.

Of course there are going to be more overlooked games than these, and I’m sure there are still some I’m yet to discover. These were the ones I felt most in need of some recognition however, and I hope you’ll give them a go when you next see them under a layer of dust in the pre-owned bins of game stores around Australia (and the world) or on Game Share .

You could pay $100 for a good new game OR you could get several of these for the same price and help the developers get what they deserved from the beginning.

After all, it’s pretty hard to regret an entire new game for nearly the price of a DLC pack on Live or PSN

A lista 4.0:

2K Games has revealed the first details of the multiplayer modes of Bioshock 2. The multiplayer aspect of the game is being developed by Digital Extremes, the co-creators of the Unreal games and makers of Dark Sector, and here’s what we can expect when this launches:

It’s a prequel to the first game. Amazing! Set during the fall of the underwater city of Rapture, Bioshock 2 puts players in the place of experimental subjects testing out Plasmids and Tonics. This means gamers will get to see locations in Rapture before the city fell into ruin and sogginess. Love it. Locations mentioned include Kashmir Restaurant and Mercury Suites, all of which have been re-worked for multiplayer goodness.

Experience Points: According to 2K, players can gain experience points during gameplay to access new weapons, Plasmids and Tonics to create enough combinations to develop a new character.

“Extend the Rapture fiction”: According to 2K, “Players will step into the shoes of Rapture citizens and learn more about the fall of Rapture as they progress though the experience.”

I have to admit, when this game was first announced, I was not super-excited: I loved the first game so much, I didn’t want to see it ruined, but since learning more about what Bioshock 2 is bringing to the table, I’ve changed my mind, and now, hearing the “plot” of the multiplayer and the involvement of multiplayer veterans at Digital Extremes, this title has moved up to the most-anticipated spot in my mind. I can only hope that part of the multiplayer will involve players participating in the riots and fights that took place as Rapture itself was crumbling. What about you? Are you psyched or what? What do you think of the multiplayer?

Bioshock 2 has been confirmed to have multi-player. Bioshock was considered to be incredible and to

Bioshock 2 has been confirmed to have multi-player. Bioshock was considered to be incredible and to contain some amazingly clever ideas so it was always interesting to think about what they will do with multi-player. The first thing they done was give it away to another developer, who are Digital Extremes, the people behind Dark Sector and the PlayStation 3 version of Bioshock. I’m presuming that this is so 2K can focus on creating a single player to match the standards f the original.

The multi-player is set before the events of the first Bioshock where rapture wasn’t in such a bad state, to say the least. Each player plays as a Plasmid test subject and can use plasmids, tonics and weapons in the multi-player mode. Players can customise the weapons/plasmids/tonics they take into a multi-player match with them similar to Call of Duty 4. It also includes experience points which will allow more weapons/plasmids/tonics to be unlocked and used. The multi-player is also said to reveal a lot about Rapture’s past. There is supposed to be a big difference in the Rapture available in the multi-player and the Rapture from the first Bioshock.

So far the multi-player is sounding very promising and could have players hooked for months.

My involvement: Editor

This was my second real video I did with GameZombie, and I think it turned out alright. There were a lot of things that could have been much better, though. It starts out real nice, and I love the bloom at :24. That’s one of the few really well done and well motivated bloom effects I did in my early days with GameZombie.

Again, the text is very bad. This is probably the worst lower thirds I ever did. I just really didn’t understand the concept of the lower thirds, and didn’t feel like I should waste the time doing them. That was extremely short-sited on my part as the bad lower thirds in all my early GameZombie videos really dumbs down the quality of the actual editing.

I really like the “He was Infected” part at :43. The footage is from the trailer assets I was given for the interview, but along with what Josh is saying it has a very Man On Fire feel. It would have been nice, however, if I’d continued this motif throughout the entire piece instead of just having it show up once.

I really like the outline I gave the Picture in Picture. It was actually something I had found in LiveType and decided to co-opt for my own means. I’m not sure if this was the best place to use that outline because it is really hard to see. The whole interview is pretty dark and has a lot of black. This worked really well with the game being Dark Sector, and I do like the black hair, black clothes, black couch thing, but the really cool Picture in Picture outline I found just kind of drowns into the background.

The sound effects on the blur transitions were way too loud, and I’m not really sure how much I like the blur transitions anyway. They are alright, and they work. But if I was doing this project today, I think I would have found something better.

I really liked the way that the letterbox slid down to fit the widescreen trailer footage (1:16). This was one of my favorite parts about this video, and I always waited around for another opportunity to use this effect later, but it just didn’t happen.

The Wizard of Oz part fits well and is clever enough. The Black and White to color afterwards is a bit cheesy, but still works. The B-Roll shot with the quick swing around the interview and the loud sound effect (is that a machine gun?) at 1:51 does not work at all. I don’t know what that was all about. At 2:08 there is a really bad jump cut which I kind of half-assed covered with a dissolve. It’s very sloppy.

The montage of chopping is a good idea, and I like it. But I could have made it much better than that. Maybe used some better shots and had a smoother transition back into Josh and then interview.
