Liam Neeson is not a scientist, that’s how you know that this film is messed up.

In director Sam Raimi’s moody, intense thriller, brilliant scientist Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) is almost killed by gangsters in a massive explosion. Unstable and disfigured, Peyton becomes Darkman, an impossibly strong, tormented antihero. Able to spend only moments in the sunlight, Darkman begins a quest to rekindle his love with his girlfriend (Frances McDormand), who he’s held at a distance, and to take vengeance on his enemies.

The funny thing about Darkman is that it looks like a comic book movie (Batman, Dick Tracy), though it features an original screenplay. It has all the elements of one of those origin episodes that the comic book fans love to collect, and how they discover how that superhero turned out to be that way and why.

One thing that you soon may notice about Darkman that it acts and looks like a horror film, when really its a natural tale based on revenge. A lot of elements are thrown together to make this wild fest filled with blend of comic book action, sets, and characters, pitch black humor, and sci-fi/horror violence. I wasn’t expecting anything different from a Raimi film, but what this is still a nice and well-worked blend.

There are a lot of original things that go on in this film. Sometimes the action is really cool to look at, and there are a lot of other scenes where Darkman uses some of his smart tricks to fool others thinking he is still dead.

The one problem I had with this film was that Darkman the character was not very compelling. He obviously has a reason for killing all these people, but compared to other super heroes such as Batman and Superman, he doesn’t have much of a personality and we can’t really connect to him as an audience.

Occasionally the film does get a bit silly with its very cheap one-liners, and cliche script. But the villains didn’t seem so bad either. They just seemed like people that were part of the mob nothing really different, and I think anybody, super powers or no super powers could have easily killed them.

Liam Neeson does try his hardest with the character but isn’t given much to play with. He does have little scenes where he goes into rage and it seems believable just not memorable, and falls by the waist side of this character.

Consensus: Darkman is well-directed, and at times a very fun picture, but isn’t too memorable, that features an uninteresting superhero, and gang of villains.

Of all the super heroes that I’ve encountered in my time (well, not literally, but you know what I mean), one that stands out to me for a number of reasons is Darkman. He’s not a household name like Spider-Man or Batman, probably because he made his first appearance in 1990, in the film that bears his name. Unlike a lot of super heroes, he fights purely out of vengeance. Even vengeance driven super heroes like the aforementioned Spider-Man have redirected their rage towards crime as a whole. Darkman specifically targeted those who made him what he is, who stole his life and turned him from a normal scientist working on synthetic skin into a deformed recluse. And also unlike the most well known super heroes, he isn’t afraid to kill. His goal isn’t to get criminals behind bars, it’s to exact revenge. And finally, he was played by Liam Neeson, which is just sweet. Is Darkman the greatest super hero ever made? Probably not. Is he awesome? Definitely yes.

Darkman is a 1990 superhero action film directed by Sam Raimi. It is based on a short story he wrote that paid homage to Universal horror films of the 1930s. The film stars Liam Neeson as Peyton Westlake, a scientist who is attacked and left for dead by a ruthless mobster, Durant (played by Larry Drake) after his girlfriend, an attorney (played by Frances McDormand) runs afoul of a corrupt developer (played by Colin Friels). Westlake survives, but is left with burns over most of his body. While hospitalized as a comatose John Doe, he is unwittingly subjected to a radical treatment that destroys the nerve endings connected to his skin, neutralizing his ability to sense physical pain but increasing his brain’s emotional output to compensate. Now half-crazed, Westlake escapes the hospital and decides to get revenge on the criminals who took his life away, but now as a masked vigilante, known as Darkman.

Unable to secure the rights to either The Shadow or Batman, Raimi decided to create his own superhero and struck a deal with Universal Studios to make his first Hollywood studio movie. He was subjected to a grueling screenwriting process and equally difficult post-production battle with the studio.

Darkman was generally well-received by critics and performed well at the box office, grossing almost $49 million worldwide, well above its $16 million budget. This financial success spawned two direct-to-video sequels, Darkman II: The Return of Durant and Darkman III: Die, Darkman, Die, as well as numerous comic books, video games and action figures. Over the years, Darkman has become regarded as a cult film.

Soundtrack:

Danny Elfman said of his score, “Again old-fashioned and melodramatic, but in a way that I’m crazy about. Sam Raimi has a wonderful visual style that lends itself easily to music. It was an enormous relief writing long, extended musical sequences, something which is very rare in modern films. No reason to hold back on this one.”

An original superhero for the big screen! Screenplay By: Chuck Pfarrer, Daniel & Joshua Goldin

An original superhero for the big screen!

Screenplay By: Chuck Pfarrer, Daniel & Joshua Goldin & Ivan & Sam Raimi
Directed By: Sam Raimi

Long before helming the Spider-Man franchise Sam Raimi brought his own superhero to the big screen with Darkman. This isn’t a comic book adaptation, the character of Darkman is an original character created for the movies. He is an interesting character, and at a time when outside of the Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movies the superhero world wasn’t offering much at the cinema, Darkman was a breath of fresh air.

Darkman is big, it plays big and comes across as big. This is a film that isn’t afraid to admit that any world where superheros exist and people have superpowers would be big. Small moments would be few and far between, instead everything can be and should be big. Darkman showed how the big world of superheros could be brought to the big screen successfully. It is big yet still full of drama and believability, not an easy task to accomplish, unless someone understands their comic books.

The entirety of Darkman has an artificial feel to it, a sort of surreal quality. I rather enjoyed that facet of Darkman, the carnival sequence in particular and the images used to showcase when Darkman was ready to lose it and use his powers. The artificial nature of Darkman lends itself to the bigness the film wants to put across and it enhances the later comic book style flash cuts the action scenes will take on.

The main theme of Darkman is obviously identity, and while nothing new to cinema or to comic book inspired heroes, it tackles identity in a more adult manner than usual. Darkman isn’t your typical hero, he swears, he has anger issues and he’s not in control of who he wants to be any more. He doesn’t know who exactly he is now that he is deformed and has gained these powers. We are just as puzzled as he is over what his plight now is, and this adds weight to his dilemma and texture to the issue of identity in our minds.

I did have a few issues with some of the odd transitions that Raimi chose to go with, on more than one occasion they were a bit off putting and tough to get behind. The time line was also a bit all over the place, if you really stop and pay attention to when certain events are happening they make that much sense. Finally, the ending isn’t bad, but it does go on so long that it peters out near its conclusion.

Despite the above flaws Darkman is a wonderful little flick with an interesting take on the superhero genre. It’s more out there than most comic inspired movies you can see, features some good acting in most of the parts and is very adult in nature. Raimi would later outdo Darkman as far as his superhero efforts go, but that doesn’t change the fact that Darkman is a splendid picture that deserves a shot from any superhero fans.

Rating:

***1/2

Cheers,

El Cuervo (The Crow, 1994)

V de Vendetta (V For Vendetta, 2005)

Formidable.

El Castigador (The Punisher, 1989, 2004, 2008)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099365/ Before Sam Raimi reached stardom with Spider-Man 1 and 2 (Third

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099365/

Before Sam Raimi reached stardom with Spider-Man 1 and 2 (Third film? What third film? There’s no third film. Shut up.), he directed “B” movies — “Evil Dead”, despite its microscopic budget, turned out to be a much scarier production than most of the “A” stuff Hollywood put out. “Darkman”, however, has no intention to be more than it is — a staggeringly cheesy comic book film that’s not even based on a real comic book (long story involving copyright).

Peyton Westlake — okay, pause. I feel I have to stress this is a funny name for Portuguese speakers, since “Peyton” sounds similar to “peitos” — which means “boobies” — so I get extra cheesiness. Anyway, Peyton Westlake (hahaha) is a scientist who is trying to crack the secret to make his lab-created skin cells last more than 99 minutes (hahaha). He comes into possession of important papers belonging to his future wife. Right when he finds out the cells do not deteriorate in the dark for some utterly arbitrary reason, a group of thugs after the papers kick the living shit out of Peyton — so hard that it reminded me of Nordberg in “The Naked Gun”. But the thugs, not satisfied with destroying Peyton’s lab, scarring him, crippling him and killing his best friend, decide to blow everything up as well. Peyton hilariously survives the explosion — his good looks, however, don’t.

Having had his nerves destroyed by the doctors so he could stand the pain, this somehow gives him extra strength — MUCH extra strength –, psychosis, a bad temper and the awesome power of speaking clearly with no lips and half his face missing. Determined to get his revenge, Peyton (hahaha) mounts his own lab with wreckage from his previous lab (which apparently wasn’t very damaged by the monumental explosion) and starts building masks of his enemies with his skin cell technology — only when exposed to light, the masks last just 99 minutes. He also tries building a mask of himself pre-explosion so he can see his would-be-future-wife without making her flee from his horrible figure.

If subtlety was a person, Sam Raimi would be hitting it with a sledgehammer for the entire duration of this film. Every emotional moment is portrayed by yelling, screaming, bellowing and yelling more. Forcing then-unknown Liam Neeson and Frances McDormand to act with the enthusiasm of a five-year-old on cocaine, Raimi does not allow a single scene to go by without an elaborate camera movement or a scene with heavy editing, superimposing an image over the other — especially when he wants to portray Peyton’s meltdowns.

However, this coma-inducing amount of cheesiness seems to be exactly Raimi’s intention — to avoid subtlety at all costs and make heavy use of exaggeration to create an intense (and very funny) experience. He succeeds — “Darkman” is a film that holds your attention and makes you laugh either at the horrible acting, the pitiful use of blue screen or the abominable editing. The villain is, of course, COMPLETELY evil and with no redeeming factors whatsoever, the henchmen have the IQ of your average broomstick and Peyton’s psychosis doesn’t seem to interfere with his intelligence, since he manages to plan his moves well when he’s not screaming.

The action scenes are, as you would expect, nuts. They have the occasional good stuntwork and one or other memorable moment, but they’re plagued by the weak special effects. Raimi also seems decided not to show any violence — even thought the protagonist’s face (or lack of it) is visible most of the time, hypocritically. However, Raimi does show hints of the energy and craftsmanship that would later show in the Spider-Man Trilog — eeer, in the Spider-Man films. The two films. The first two and only films.

Not much else to say, really. With actually competent cinematography, make-up and a remarkably exaggerated soundtrack by Danny Elfman, “Darkman” is cheesy fun. The good kind of bad film.

We join our intrepid feline heroes on a dark and stormy morning.

Zinger: I’ll walk on mom’s head. That usually wakes her up.

Leading the way to back door. The door opens, Zinger pokes his head out.

Zinger: Hey, what’s with the cold water falling from the sky? I’m so not going out into that!

Darkman: You wuss, I’ll show you how it’s done.

Gingerly places one sleek black paw on the water logged deck. Yanks it back as if burned.

Darkman: Who wants to go outside anyway? We can fly (run) up and down the hallway and jump on things we’re not supposed to.

Zinger:That sounds like a great plan!

And so our intrepid heroes are resting up for their next great adventure.

Little do they know it has stopped raining. Not sure they care.

I’m looking forward to this. Sure, the plot doesn’t look very original. Guy’s daughter is kidnapped and he kicks a lot of ass getting her back.

Back in October I wrote a post about a black cat who was hanging around, partaking in whatever bonus food he could score. We dubbed him Darkman because (a) he’s jet black and hard to see in the dark and (b) he kind of drops in and our of our lives like a super hero.

Well, he’s moved in. I called his owner the other day and she said, rather breezily, “oh him? We haven’t seen him in months! Give him a pat for me.”

It started with the cold snap we had a few weeks ago. Temps in San Francisco tend toward the mild side but these nights were dipping into the 30s. Darkman has his fair share of intelligence and one chilly night he marched right by his food dish, jumped onto the cushiest chair in the house, curled up in a ball and fell fast asleep.

So began his new routine. I’d open the door and whistle before going to bed and a dark shape with big green eyes would materialize out of the night and settle in *his* chair.

After about a week he moved onto the bed with me, Bert and Zinger. It’s getting a little crowded but we work it out. Darkman sleeps like a log and weighs about as much as one when he’s out. Why is it that a sleeping animals weigh more?

I’m quite pleased with this new development. Darkman (who we think is 2 years old) likes to play and now Zinger (who is 8 years old) has started playing again too. They come and go and I imagine idyllic scenes of them hanging around the ‘hood together. Too anthropomorphic? Perhaps.

Darkman looks healthier too. He’s packed on a few much need pounds and he’s become downright affectionate. The transformation warms my heart.

Ryan 1: I don’t even think this is debatable. Batman’s my/our favorite superhero, Tim

Ryan 1: I don’t even think this is debatable. Batman’s my/our favorite superhero, Tim Burton’s great, Jack Nicholson’s fantastic, and Michael Keaton’s equal to Christian Bale as Batman, even if Bale is a better Bruce Wayne. Darkman’s good, but it’s not really a contest.

Ryan 2: I don’t know about that. Darkman may be the funniest superhero movie ever made, and it still works dramatically. Batman’s a stylish picture, but Raimi really brings out the sort of fun, violent, over the top, pure entertainment that makes me love comic books. It’s the proto-Spiderman.

Ryan 1: But Batman is Tim Burton doing Batman! That’s a fantastic match. I love Begins and The Dark Knight, and I think that they’re smarter approaches to the character and overall better films than this one and all that, but Batman oozes style. It has Burton’s magnificent set design, overall weirdness, and oddball sense of humor, which works perfectly for Batman in the late eighties. I know that the new ones have a real depth and insight that Tim Burton’s film is missing, but I also think that they’ve sacrificed the sort of exaggerated, frightening atmosphere that I love about the comics. By making Batman more realistic, they’ve eliminated an important aspect of the comic book universe, which is that, while it’s relatable and has a more realistic world than other comics, it’s also unpredictable and left of center. They can’t have Mad Hatter, Dr. Phosphorus, Clayface, or Solomon Grundy, because they’ve established a world based in pure reality, and as an obsessive Batman fanboy, I think that’s a little sad.

Ryan 2: You’re doing that thing again.

Ryan 1: What thing?

Ryan 2: You’re supposed to be comparing the movie to Darkman, not the Christopher Nolan Batman movies.

Ryan 1: Oh, sorry. I just sort of spaced off. Back on topic: Burton’s Batman is cool, over the top, creepy, and extremely atmospheric. It sets up a whole world. Darkman’s really cool, but its characters are broader, its world is less interesting, and it overall seems like a lesser film. Batman is epic, and Darkman’s small and a little cheap looking.

Ryan 2: I think you’re really missing the point on this one. Yes, Batman has better sets, but it all seems hollow and artificial. It looks like a movie set. Darkman is set in our world. It’s still exaggerated, because the whole movie’s exaggerated, but it’s still identifiable and real. As for looking cheap, sure it does, a little, but that’s part of its charm. Even though he had an actual budget, Raimi’s still a low-budget director at heart, and so he really makes the most of what he has. He’s still every bit as stylish as Burton, but his style comes from camera work, actors, plot, and dialogue. His movie doesn’t live or die based on some fancy gothic architecture. Raimi’s style permeates every bit of Darkman. That’s part of what makes it so damn fun to watch. It’s like Evil Dead II, and it’s part of what makes the first two Spiderman movies such a good time. The entire film reeks of over-the-top pure joy and excitement that’s ingrained in the very fabric of the film. Burton’s better with mis-en-scene, but Raimi’s a genuine pulp filmmaker, through and through.

Ryan 1: You’re wrong about Batman. Sure the movie seems simple on the surface, and it’s attention to detail and atmosphere help it a lot, but the characters in Batman are more nuanced, the world is more compelling, and the plot is more interesting than in Darkman. Darkman as a character has an awful origin story compared to Batman, his relationship with Julie Hastings is formulaic and shallow, and his villains are less interesting. A real-estate developer? Really? Batman has the most compelling comic book villain in history, the Joker, and he’s played by one of history’s most compelling actors, Jack Nicholson. Plus, you act like Batman takes itself seriously. It’s still funny and fun and has a great energy.

Ryan 2: Of course the characters in Batman are more nuanced, they had fifty years of growth and development to work from. With Darkman, Raimi had to invent everybody, and I think when you keep that in mind, he did a really impressive job. Peyton Westlake is compelling, and yes his relationship with Hastings is formulaic, but it’s a good formula that resonates with the viewer. Also, you’re really short-changing Colin Friels as Louis Stack Jr. He may not wear makeup, but he’s charismatic, has great lines, and is fun to watch. The scene where they’re both standing on i-beams and he’s dancing around taunting Darkman is great. Jack Nicholson gets by just by playing the same character that he’s always played, only this time he’s dressed like Joker, and while that’s a great match, I think his portrayal’s gotten a lot of slack based solely on how good of a match it is. The new villains and unknown actors in Darkman had to be compelling on their own, and I think that they did a banner job of it.

Ryan 1: First off, Darkman isn’t a new character. He’s a pastiche of the two characters that Raimi really wanted to do, Batman and the Shadow. He’s an archetype, not some brilliant innovation, and he’s kind of a lazy archetype at that. Rather than give him any actual motivation, his powers consist of not being able to feel physical pain, but having to endure intense emotional pain. I’m going to break this down a little further. His power is to be sad. What? Whether or not Bruce Wayne had a headstart is inconsequential, his character has real motivation, while Darkman’s motivation is infinitely less compelling. His enemies blew up his lab and scarred him and now he wants revenge but he’s super angsty about it. He spends half of his movie crying for chrissakes. It’s like Raimi wanted to make a dark vigilante but didn’t really know how to go about it, and it’s his shortcutting that makes Darkman a lesser superhero. There are enough similarities, the whole dark, angsty, vigilante out for revenge against the man who ruined his life while being unable to truly relate to normal people thing, that comparing the differences will always come out in Batman’s favor.

Ryan 2: Of course Darkman’s a pastiche. Nobody’s ever denied that. But it’s that origin that makes the character so great. It’s a gentle parody of the dark vigilante archetype that we’ve been inundated with for years. The scene where Peyton Westlake runs away from the carnival while crying and carrying a stuffed elephant is a perfect example. In fact, the whole carnival scene is a perfect example. Raimi mocks the whiny, self-indulgent urban vigilante idea while giving it enough pathos to make us actually feel for the character. It’s a reminder that characters like Batman are mentally unhinged, but that their lunacy makes them relatable and sympathetic, and it exaggerates this to the point where it becomes true satire. Raimi’s speaking as a nerd like us who’s read enough superhero comics to know where the seams are. Darkman fits every aspect of the morally ambiguous superhero template, but knows it. That self-awareness is what makes it so damn fun.

Ryan 1: Batman’s totally self-aware without being a parody of our favorite superhero.

Ryan 2: Darkman’s totally self-aware while being a respectful parody of our favorite superhero. We have to learn how to take a joke, Ryan. Everyone will still know you’re a fan. That tattoo’s not going to rub off.

Neveldine and Taylor are the writing and directing team behind the Crank franchise. They are brilliant. They could hang it up right now and be assured of their legacy. But great minds cannot be caged, so they continue to create. They wrote Pathology in between Crank’s and while it lacks their fast and loose directing and cinematography, it fits snugly within their body of work.

For the poster, they made Alyssa Milano's lawyer a doctor. Also, Milo appears to be cradling the same woman who is standing on the left.

Pathology follows Ted (Milo Ventimiglia), top of his medical class at Harvard(probably in the same graduating class as Silas and Jamal!) and now a resident at a Washington D.C. hospital. He meets a crew of brash pathology residents who suffer from a combination of god complex and plain old crazy. How crazy? One of their less shocking antics is reenacting the Katz’s Deli scene from When Harry Met Sally with cadavers. You know, med school. The other crazy thing they get up to is killing people and then having the rest of their group guess how they did the killing. Which is kinda neat. I could see how you could get caught up in that. Well, no, I can’t. But Ted falls in with this completely insane group of people because OH THE POWER A DOCTOR WIELDS, IT CAN WARP YOUR MIND! Also, the redhead in their group is Ready To Go, if you pick up what I’m putting down(if she isn’t eye-fucking you, then she’s fucking you). The film stumbles on this one aspect, for while the redhead is indeed fetching, Ted is engaged to the very rich Gwen. It’s indicated at one point that he can’t be honest with Gwen and is only marrying her because her family is loaded. Fair enough, the guy joined a murder club, what’s one more prick move on his part, right? But Gwen is played by Alyssa Milano, who is very hot. If she were dirt poor, men would be lining up to make her rich. A super rich Alyssa Milano? Don’t tease me, movie. I will admit that the redhead(Lauren Lee Smith) has to hit quite few different levels of crazy, sad, and naked fucking while Milano mostly just looks concerned or sleepy, so they cast for skill. Also, Milano’s character has sex with her bra on. I know. The redhead indulges in some lipstick lesbianism and has some acupuncture sex, amongst other things I’ll get to.

Pathology is a sneakier effort from Neveldine and Taylor. It slowly moves for the first half hour or so and then BOOM, insane sex/autopsy montage. Open chest cavities to go with exposed chests and asses. Pathologists smoking crack(This was my favorite)! It’s hilariously over the top, especially when Ted and the redhead kill a man, and then immediately fuck on the floor. Nothing gets the ladies hot and bothered like killing Durant. Milo Ventimiglia gives a performance at the intersection of Keanu and Stallone. He tends to be stone faced whether he’s having a friendly beer or having sex on an morgue slab. To give him the benefit of the doubt, I haven’t done the latter, so perhaps the two situations are surprisingly similar. At one point he has to express fear, guilt and regret, which involved plenty of huffing, sighing, gritted teeth and literal hand wringing. The villain of the piece, Jake Gallo (Michael Weston) has the right kind of creepy to him, and he pretty much owns every scene he’s in. His drunk act at a cocktail party is perfectly awkward, topped off by smashing a tray of champagne flutes off a waiter’s tray, catching one, attempting to drink out of it, finding it empty, and appearing even more pissed, now at himself. I clapped. Pathology did have one scene that felt completely true to life. The redhead surprises Ted in the lobby of his apartment building and attempts to blow him. In the lobby. Ted takes a moment, notices that he is in full view of cars and pedestrians passing the doorway of his building and says, “No go.” He’ll have sex with you in front of a dead body, but there are some things a man just won’t do. Justin knows what I’m talking about.

Have some crack!

The big finale is actually three parts, which I won’t spoil here. I will mention that the economy of characters is something that people should always remember and that nods to Mission Impossible 2, intentional or otherwise, are always welcome in this house.

While not a Crank level success, Pathology succeeds as a sleazy thriller. A little more humor never hurt anybody, but I was never bored(did I mention the hooker grandma? No? There is a hooker grandma), and by the time you get to the film’s final moments, Ted’s stoic demeanor becomes morbidly humorous. Pathology also fits well with the Neveldine/Taylor template of loathsome protagonist who must fight even more loathsome antagonists. College.
