One thing that I do differently during a race is not use an ipod. I guess I don’t feel like I need to since there’s so many people around and usually the scenery is really nice. Especially running in a beautiful city like SF – you might feel a lifting of the spirits seeing the sun rising above the clouds casting a golden shimmer, enveloping you everywhere you look. But no, I barely notice any of this or at least in the moment it does nothing for me.

The sense that I felt most often during my race was silence. Especially on hills where nobody said anything as they concentrated on getting through the climb. Whenever I decided to pay attention there was nothing to hear. I wasn’t running hard enough to hear my breathing or my heart pounding. I think, I did however hear my sweat glands pumping like a 24 hour oil refinery.

One of my favorite authors, Shusaku Endo wrote a book called, “Silence” about a Spanish Priest in 16th century Japan who lived in poverty and obscurity, facing torture and death all for his faith – but when he prayed or meditated he didn’t feel anything. No sense of God anywhere. OK I’m not comparing running to ”una experiensa religiosa” (guess the singer?, he has a distinctive mole), although some may equate running with torture.

My point is when things are going good, you feel great at mile 10- encouragement is not an issue. Heck the dude cheering people on dressed up like the Donnie Darko Rabbit would probably lift your spirits. But when things go bad????? How do you generate internal inspiration?. Just as the Priest never got an answer I don’t have one either. I’ll have to revisit this later.

For now, everyone’s different. But maybe I should stick with my ipod and play the Rocky song da da da …. da da da…. da da da…. da da da….Maybe I’ll even have enough energy to knock out Darko on my way to the finish line.

In a new feature, I will post covers of songs by various artists. I’ll try them as varied and rare as possible, but i’m sure alot of you would of heard them. If not… shame on you!

Der Film spielt im Oktober 1988. Donnie Darko ist ein intelligenter und kreativer, aber psychisch labiler Teenager, der mit seiner Familie  in einer Kleinstadt in Virginia lebt. Er ist in psychologischer und medikamentöser Behandlung. In der Nacht des 2. Oktobers stürzt das Triebwerk eines Flugzeuges auf das Haus seiner Familie und trifft genau Donnies Zimmer. Donnie überlebt, weil er sich zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht in seinem Bett befindet sondern gerade schlafwandelt. In der Nacht zuvor erschien ihm ein lebensgroßes Wesen  in einem Hasenkostüm namens „Frank“. „Frank“ hatte Donnie dazu gebracht, das Haus zu verlassen. In der Morgendämmerung erwacht er nur in Boxershorts auf einem Golfplatz. Als Donnie nach Hause zurückkehrt, wird das Flugzeugteil gerade aus seinem Zimmer entfernt.

Donnie hat weitere Visionen von Frank, der dabei meist in Rätseln spricht. Er prophezeit ihm das Ende der Welt, welches in 28 Tagen, 6 Stunden, 42 Minuten und 12 Sekunden eintreten soll…

Am 26. Oktober 2001 startete das Regiedebüt des US-amerikanischen Regisseurs Richard Kelly in den amerikanischen Kinos. Der Film ist ein teils satirisch angehauchter Highschool-Science-Fiction-Film. Viele Handlungsstränge laufen im Film parallel ab und verbinden sich erst am Ende zu einem Ganzen.

Laut den Deutungen des Regisseurs Richard Kelly bildet sich beim Aufprall des Triebwerks  ein „Tangentenuniversum“, eine instabile Art von Paralleluniversum, das nach der von Frank angegebenen Zeitspanne einen Tag vor Halloween kollabiert und sich selbst, aber auch das „reale“ Universum zerstört. Ab diesem Zeitpunkt spielt der Film im Tangentenuniversum. Donnie ist der „Auserwählte“, der durch jenes Ereignis besondere Fähigkeiten verliehen bekommen hat. Frank und Gretchen können mit Donnie durch das Konstrukt der vierten Dimension in Verbindung treten. Auch alle anderen Personen um Donnie sind „manipuliert“, sie haben die Aufgabe, ihn durch verschiedene Aussagen und Handlungen dazu zu bewegen, das Tangentenuniversum wieder zu schließen. Die aus Metall bestehende Turbine dient als Artefakt, welche sich zwischen dem Tangentenuniversum und dem Primäruniversum bewegen kann. Donnie opfert sich so am Ende selbst, um alle anderen – insbesondere die im Tangentenuniversum „gestorbenen“ Frank und Gretchen – zu retten.

Donnie Darko Movie Poster

Donnie Darko, the dark and surreal film, had a fitting movie poster.  There are several design features that help to convey the tone of the movie, the actors in the movie and the motif.

The emphasis of the poster is the impression of a rabbit’s head (for fans of the movie, his name is Frank).  The rabbit seems sinister– skull-like and smiling.  The blueish color is ghostlike and cold.  The viewers eye is drawn to the rabbit because the background is a simple black.

When a viewer looks closer, the onlooker realizes the rabbit is composed of many pictures.  The actor’s faces are arranged to meld into the rabbit image.  The sharpest picture is the one right about the rabbit’s left eye– it is of the main character.  The others are blurrier and softer.  The effect emphasizes Jake Gyllenhaal among the other actors and actresses.

The next object on the emphasis hierarchy is the title of the movie.  “Donnie Darko” is written with an intriguing typography.  It blends several techniques together.  The font has serifs, which are usually used to depict more formal text.  The words have a wave in them (look at the bottom of the letters– they aren’t straight).  I think this gives it a sense of movement.    The words are also blurred in the background (a blurry shadow).  It makes the text seen rather dynamic.  I also think its interesting that the text is the only thing that is white in the entire picture– but the text is so narrow that it’s focus is secondary to the rabbit.

At the bottom is the legalese.  It’s written in a grey, low-contrast font and boxy letters that seem blend the writing together.  An onlooker doesn’t really read it. Plus, audiences expect the legalese to be at the bottom– so they have experience ignoring the tiny writing at the bottom.

On the whole, this is a very effective poster.  The image of the rabbit sticks with a viewer.

E’ inutile girarci troppo intorno, D.Darko è un film che nasconde un messaggio, ma per capire quale messaggio c’è dietro questo strano  modo di agire del protagonista, bisogna prima arrivare a vedere il film con una consapevolezza di quello che la vita veramente è.

Donnie Darko nasconde concetti che sono alla base della nostra esistenza.

I have a deadline. And that deadline is October the 20th. The deadline? To organise a live band to play the first gig for my new project.
I think it can be done, and it’s great to have a deadline and something to aim towards.

But it does lead to another problem. I really need to sort a name – in time for posters too. But bejesus, I’m struggling. Bringing back memories of sitting on the basement couch while ‘practicing’ for my first proper band. We ended up calling ourselves Darko (yup, after Donny Darko). People expected something dark, mysteries, and most likely offal. We were pretty much three chord pop punk/alt rock nonsense – and probably offal.  Still, good times.

A few weeks ago, due to the powers of facebook, a few old Darko pics arose from the ashes. We’re so young! My guitar’s so ‘new’ and not a sticker in sight. And, wow… What a curtain I’m wearing.

Okay, this is slightly different to my usual blog posts, in the sense that it’s going to take the form of a letter to Nathan Atkins. You probably don’t know who this man is and to be honest I’d be fairly surprised if you do, for the purposes of this post I actually had to actively search out this man’s name.

In an odd shift of tone, Donnie Darko is a brilliant film. If you’ve not seen it, then I honestly don’t know which rock and on which planet you’ve been hiding under since 2001, but I earnestly implore you to search it out and basically stop reading this blog right now because it’ll mean about as much to you as asking America politely to stop polluting our planet with their ridiculously big cars. I’ve already digressed majorly from what I wanted to write about.

Upon first hearing about S. Darko, the much anticipated, albeit with hugely bated breath, sequel to Donnie Darko, I was honestly excited. ‘Sweet, a sequel to one of my favourite films ever, sure it’s a big film to live up to in terms of greatness, but yeah, sure.’ Not that I could really see how they’d actually work in a sequel to such a film, by and large IMDB Top 250 films don’t generally have sequels, unless originally intended to from the word go. However, then I found out that it was going to feature only one of original cast members, who was too young to actually remember their time on set for the first film and had less screen time than virtually every other actor in the film. ‘Fresh new faces, this could be interesting!’ I thought, with a slightly glimmer of uneasiness about me, but still, it could’ve been good.

Then came the bombshell. Straight-to-DVD. I was nearly physically sick, I can’t name a single straight-to-DVD film that hasn’t been downright bloody terrible. See: animated Disney Sequels of long-dead franchises in order to gain what they call ‘life’ from a frankly long-dead horse. Not only that, but the original creator of Donnie Darko, Richard Kelly, had absolutely nothing to do with the sequel in the slightest and wise was he to stay away from this absolute abomination.

Almost everything about this movie was terrible, the best way to describe it would be badly-writtten fanfiction by people who didn’t particularly ‘get’ the first film and if they did, were incredibly drunk upon each subsequent viewing and throughout the entire production process. For example, Frank. Frank was iconic of the first film, it’s good that Nathan Atkins recongised this ‘Guh huh huh, I can use this for my film, people will reconigse it. Guh huh huh.’ No, you stupid man. Any self respecting fan knows that Frank was in the first film because it was Donnie’s sister’s boyfriend in his Halloween costume; therefore the character of Frank only makes sense in this context.

Moreover, the cinematography was horrible, it was filmed in the same style as Neighbours, with a couple of awkward close-up shots, combined with frankly terrible casting. Someone from Twilight, someone else from Gossip Girl (some prick that doesn’t deserve my valuable time searching IMDB, but really does deserve a punch in the nose for being possibly the single worst character/actor in a movie, ever and… someone else from something equally bad.

Donnie Darko fans, by and large, are over-analytic cinematic pricks (Hi there!) and in order to ‘understand’ (in the loosest sense of the word) S Darko, you had to have seen Donnie Darko. But if you liked Donnie Darko, you’ll hate S. Darko because it essentially took everything good out of it, twisted it a little bit then attempted to enhance upon it, ultimately resulting in a twisted car-crash of inane plot, sci-fi nonsense, terrible CGI andnd a definite aura of self-parody.

But the worst part, guh, the worst part was the fact that in this ‘coming of age’ comedy/drama (which is essentially what it came over as, as opposed to the Philosophical splendour that was Donnie Darko) the paedophile/pervert/abductor/cunt gets away with it. Normaly I’d not have a problem with this sort of thing, granted that it’s done in a clever sort of way (See: A Clockwork Orange) Well, it’s not even that, it’s as if they basically forgot about that story arc, realised they’d run out of time and budget and just ended the film because they’d gotten bored.

I lied, that’s not the worst part. You know how in Donnie Darko he burns down Jim Cunningham’s house? Which leads him to be found out to have a ‘kiddy porn dungeon’? Funnily enough, Samantha Darko burns down a paedophile-clergyman’s Church. Why Nathan, you cunning devil you, you’ve directly stolen the same plotline, you craftly thing. No wait, there’s more. His cunt-sister has a copy of ‘The Philosophy of Timetravel’ by Robert Sparrow. This definitely shows how Nathan Atkins didn’t have a fucking clue what was going on in the first film because Donnie never received the book, he only received it in the Tangent Universe. Therefore his Physics teacher didn’t give the book to him so there is frankly no reason for her to have the book in any form.

I went into this film expecting the worse but this far exceeded my expectations, Nathan Atkins shouldn’t ever be allowed near a single piece of film, ever again, by penalty of being hung, drawn, quartered and distributed evenly into every 666th packet of all Nestle products. You stupid, stupid, stupid cunt.

Donnie Darko es, a mi entender, un perfecto antihéroe, pues lo que es, se ve superado en creces por aquellas muchas cosas que deja de ser. Donnie es uno de esos seres que, de llegar a la adultez, bien podría alcanzar grandes destinos, incluso, hacer o aportar muchas cosas importantes en favor del prójimo y la humanidad. Sin embargo, dada su continua disconformidad con la existencia, Donnie se rebela contra esa visión filantrópica, optimista y constructora.

Nuestro protagonista sería uno de esos genios de cobertizo que mandaría a todos a buena parte con razón, y hasta es posible que Nicanor Parra lo tomara como pieza principal de uno de sus antipoemas. Para decirlo sin aspavientos, quien está en escena es un adolescente disfuncional con el mundo que le toca vivir. Y no me refiero a ese desvarío propio del individuo común que llega a la pubertad y cree que el universo gira alrededor de su ombligo. Donnie es un joven suprainteligente, preocupado por su propio destino, acosado por sus miedos, temores y demonios, un ser atormentado por un espíritu crítico que no sólo está más allá de lo normal, sino que además se ve potenciado por una carga increíble de agudeza intelectual que se le hace insufrible, y que, en definitiva, es lo que le jode. Para que maltratarnos, puede usted llamarlo genio o loco, y de allí la ambigüedad con que ve el mundo, ese espejo que le bifurca la realidad y que le hace dudar si lo que vive es real o no. Sin embargo, más allá de todas estas consideraciones, lo que afecta al espectador es que nuestro protagonista es, dada su humanidad, un personaje totalmente accesible, uno que por más que se esfuerce en lo contrario, está más dispuesto a la depresión y la locura que a la aventura de la acción y reacción que caracteriza a la mayoría de los personajes de la cinematografía de la ciencia ficción. Es uno que puede ver conejos gigantes de un metro ochenta mientras toma antidepresivos, a la par que se decide a salvar el mundo sin estar seguro de que ese mundo exista en un lugar distinto a su propia cabeza.
