Janus is a planet which lacks both tilt and spin, and its Shadowlands are the pewter band of dusk dividing the violently hot Lightside of the planet from its Darkside, imprisoned by eternal night. Due to moderate temperatures, the Shadowlands are the most livable portion of Janus, the most heavily populated and wealthiest.

Because of the peculiar conformation of the planet, birthrates are low and indiscriminate sex is encouraged for everyone except the unmated Queen of Shadow, the most powerful person on Janus. Audryn, Queen of Shadow, has reached that time in her life when she must choose a King to rule with her or fail to bear an heir, casting not only her realm but all of Janus into chaos. Despite her duty, she is reluctant to share power, even a bit distrustful. Certain Shadowland nobles vie for Audryn’s hand, and rival factions of DarkDwellersfight among themselves for the right to send candidates. The more organized Children of Light send their Prince-Scientist to woo Audryn. Although she enjoys trysting with all her suitors, none seize her heart. Then Storne, the warrior Prince of Darkness, arrives to claim her as his bride. Will his masterful ways allure or repel the willful Queen?

Queen of Shadow is a very simple storyline that is a very complex story. When I started to read it, I thought it was just about a queen picking out her husband who would be king. Little did I realize all the twist and turns that would happen in the course of this story.  Be forewarned that unless you are careful, you can believe that Audryn was only thirteen when she became sexually active in public but she was thirteen starturns which is twenty in our years. Also, this book contains an extreme amount of very hot sexual activity. All is in keeping with the storyline and I enjoyed it immensely.

Audryn is the Queen of Shadow, ruler of Shadowlands. She is nearing her seventeenth starturn, which is equivalent to our twenty-six years old and must chose a husband to have children with. Audryn was not born to rule but was thrust into the position when the rest of her family died just after her thirteenth starturn.  With the planet divided into three basic areas, Shadowlands being the prime area, she had the choice of the nobility in each land in which to pick a king. I enjoyed how Audryn found ways to have numerous sexual encounters with multiple partners without breaking the rules regarding procreation in regards to her position as queen. Though not born to be queen, I found Audryn to be very sharp in the ways of not only government but also of men and not easily swayed. I loved how she decided on a tour of the countries to make up her mind and also do a little spying.

There were three main male leads in the story. Frayn, Audryn’s cousin who took her virginity on Exhibition Day is the contender for the throne from Shadowlands. Prince-Scientist Kaldir is a Lightsider, of the Desert Dwellers, and Prince Storne is a Dark Dweller and Lord of Darkness. Each want to be king and it was fun watching how they tried to manipulate Audryn and each other in order to achieve their ends. Without revealing who is a favorite, I can say that one is a supposed known person, one is a physically beautiful looking male who seems familiar, and one is a ruggedly handsome man who seems rough around the edges. Watching how they tried to get Audryn to pick them buy giving her gifts, each one trying to top the other, and sexual favors was so funny.

While touring the respective countries, many secrets are revealed. Audryn, with the help of her servant Maia, ferrets out all the plots and soon realizes who she will choose.

Promiscuity, cloning, fratricide, and lots and lots of hot and heavy sexual active had me on the edge of my chair through this entire story. I enjoy stories that are more than just a simple tale and Queen of Shadow fulfilled my every desire.

Mina föreläsningar i sexologi och samtal med vänner har fått mig att fundera på det där med sexuella preferenser och att ha en fetisch. En tjej som jag jobbade med i somras, Rebecka Persson,  skrev sin uppsats på psykologprogrammet i ämnet BDSM med anledning att det aktualiserats genom att det i Sverige sedan årsskiftet inte längre räknas som en psykisk diagnos. RFSU uppmärksammar borttagandet av diagnoser för parafilier här. Ett problem är dock att det kvarstår som diagnos i systemet DSM VI vilket innebär att sjukdomsbegreppet blir relativt, beroende på vilket diagnossystem som man arbetar utifrån räknas parafilier som sjukt eller inte.

När jag ser på vad mina vänner faller för hos partners är det ofta så att de har vissa saker som de konsekvent tycker är tändande. Någon gillar tatueringar, en annan unga killar, någon bara blondiner och någon rakade killar. Jag tror att om vi tänker efter hittar vi alla något som vi tycker är lite extra attraktivt, på det sättet kanske förståelsen för andra fetischer som ses som mer ovanliga kan öka. Det är ofta lättare att acceptera drag hos andra om vi kan förstå dem och på något sätt se dem hos oss själva. Skillnaden mellan de mer vanliga sakerna som vi tänder på (hårfärger, frisyrer, snygga tänder eller ögon) och att kalla en fetisch kanske inte är så stor. Även beteendemässigt har vi saker som vi finner mer eller mindre sexuellt upphetsande, någon vill bli jagad, en annan föredrar att ta initiativ själv, någon gillar mer hård sex medan en annan vill ha det mjukt. Min teori är att BDSM och fetischism egentligen bara är våra vanliga sexuella önskemål dragna lite längre. Fetishism definieras av RFSU

Några av de vanligare sakerna är lack, läder eller gummi. Det finns dels forum på nätet för människor med intresse av fetischism och BDSM, men också föreningar som Fetish Party People. FPP har även en gård med lägerverksamhet. I Skåne, där jag bor, vet jag att det med jämna mellanrum ordnas fester med temat. Veberöd är en ort känd för detta. Darkside är ett annat forum på internet med inriktning BDSM och fetisch.

Då tror jag att vi alla kan hitta något som vi tänder till lite extra på utan att vi behöver koppla det till något sjukdomsbegrepp. Varje kultur har sina tabun och föreställningar om vad som hör till normen, kanske behövs vissa tabun för att upprätthålla någon sorts ordning i samhället, men jag tycker att man bör fundera på varför man anser något vara sjukt respektive friskt. När man reagerar på någons sexuella preferenser bör man fråga sig själv varför man reagerar. Har ni själva någon speciell fetischism?

What I love about exploring the dark side is the honesty of it.  I may not be “comfortably numb” but I have been there.  I may not be a heroin addict, but I get the gist of why someone would chose that route to ease their pain.

Usually, about this stage of my descent into the shadow, I pop out of it by going down a side road, choosing to lose myself in seemingly harmless addictions:  lying fallow in front of the tv; getting vocal by venting, complaining, and hoping for commisery, or picking up a best seller and losing half the day.  But not this time.

This time I’m staying on the spot.  As Pema Chodron describes it, I’m letting myself get boiled alive.  This time, there’s something even more precious to me than my own comfort.  Maybe it’s truth.  Maybe it’s wanting to be real, to find my heart, to stop running.  I want to push the limits, find out if there’s really a rabbit on the other side of that rabbit hole.

Not to say it doesn’t totally BITE some days, especially if in the midst of all this cleansing you get a major disappointment to add more flavor to your loser sunday.  But even in the midst of losing my chance to go back to school  disappointment, I am remaining open, grieving for the loss, and sending love within.

Pema describes it this way in ”When Things Fall Apart”:

“This is where tenderness comes in. When things are shaky and nothing is working, we might realize that we are on the verge of something. We might realize that this is a very vulnerable and tender place, and that tenderness can go either way. We can shut down and feel resentful or we can touch in on that throbbing quality. There is definitely something tender and throbbing about groundlessness.”

David has just had the option on his novel HATER picked up by Mexican master of the macabre Guillermo del Toro, and will be on hand to sign copies of his books. STRIGOI MEETS ITS MAKERS! Strigoi are the Vampires of Eastern European mythology, far removed from the familiar creatures of cinema cliché. Detectives Cyrus Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Kevin Bernard (Anthony Anderson)

When young war veteran Greg Tanner is found murdered in a Hudson University parking garage, Detectives Lupo and Bernard connect the murder to law professor Kevin Franklin, an attorney who formerly worked for the Department of Justice. But when the case is brought to court, it seems Tanner may have been more affected by the war than his discharge stated. Lupo and Bernard find that the pieces start to fit when Franklin’s memos from the Bush Administration are leaked.
