<p>They were talking about&#8230; nu-metal??? Yes, nu-metal. Frigging hell mallcore stuff like Slipknot and Marilyn Manson. There were even people who mentioned Linkin Park and Flyleaf.</p>
<p>Seriously! There was nothing on it but mallcore. -.-</p>
<p>Next one was a blog. He was talking about Slipknot and how much he likes them and on another blog was an article on Myanmar metal scene and the author was talking about Bullet For My Valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Trivium. Frigging Metalcore.</p>
<p>EVERYTHING HERE IS JUST NU-METAL AND METALCORE????????????</p>

<p>Why can&#8217;t they just get out of this whole mallcore thing??? Why won&#8217;t they step deeper into the depths? WHY?????</p>
<p>There were even some people who said,&#8221;Slipknot is Death Metal&#8221;. Ya, go die. It pisses me off when I hear people saying crap like that.</p>
<p>Mallcore, Nu-metal, Metalcore, BFMV, A7X, Marilyn Manson, BMTH, blah blah blah and it goes on and on and on in a never finishing mallcore whirlpool. This is what&#8217;s happening  in Myanmar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!</p>

<p>Metal albums aren&#8217;t that rare anymore. You can pretty much buy them here. (Last week I got Black Sabbath:The Dio Years and Megadeth&#8217;s Endgame.) Or you can download them via <a href="http://www.mediafire.com">Mediafire</a> or <a href="http://www.4shared.com">4shared</a> (which I usually do).</p>
<p>Still people are still drowning in the mallcore whirlpool&#8230; labeling themselves &#8220;metalheads&#8221; with Slipknot songs in their mp3 players.</p>

<title><![CDATA[A rant from Old Man Metal...]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p><a href="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/45516971_oddbox.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-109" title="_45516971_oddbox" src="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/45516971_oddbox.jpg" alt="" width="450" height="253" /></a>There was a time when I was obsessed with metal to the point that I would devour anything and everything that came my way.  Slap some skulls, blood or pentagrams on the cover and throw in a hard-to-read logo with spiky letters, and chances are I would buy it, or at the very least check the band out online.</p>
<p>However, as I&#8217;ve gotten older (in fact, I am rapidly approaching the big 3-0, one foot in the grave as I write this.), I find it harder and harder to discover new bands that I have any real vested interest in.  I can&#8217;t even remember the last time I discovered a new band that &#8220;blew me away&#8221;.  Certainly, I&#8217;ve discovered some bands that I enjoy quite a bit in the last few years (i.e. Dead Congregation, Embrace of Thorns, Necros Christos, Revocation, Augury, Ulcerate, Fleshgod Apocalypse, I could go on&#8230;), but nothing to the point of obsession, where I felt the need to listen to the album over and over again, track down the entire back catalogue, order the t-shirt, etc.  </p>
<p>Obviously, as part of running <a title="http://www.sonicfrontiers.net" href="http://www.sonicfrontiers.net" target="_blank">Sonic Frontiers.net</a> I try to keep up with current trends and bands in the music scene, particularly the heavy side.  I check other websites, magazines and message boards on a fairly regular basis to see what new bands/albums are being ranted an raved about.  And 99% of the time I check them out for myself and walk away disappointed.</p>
<p>The real question here is, does this say something about me, or about the quality of new music being cranked out on a yearly basis?  Personally, I tend to think it has something to do with the fact that as a reviewer I am constantly being inundated with new music.  Add to that the fact that I have been listening to heavy music for approximately 15 years (give or take) and what you end up with is someone that is pretty fucking hard to impress.</p>
<p><a href="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/autopsy-severed-survival-and-retribution-for-the-dead-front.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-122" title="Autopsy - Severed Survival And Retribution For The Dead - Front" src="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/autopsy-severed-survival-and-retribution-for-the-dead-front.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="396" /></a>At the end of the day, I tend to stick by (and get excited about) the bands I&#8217;ve enjoyed for years.  I can be confident these bands are going to deliver and don&#8217;t have to worry about being disappointed (although it has happened on occasion).  Besides, it is pretty damn hard for me (and most other metal fans, I&#8217;d bet) to imagine some new band coming along that blows the likes of Vader, Nile, Celtic Frost, Emperor, Autopsy or Darkthrone out of the water.  The older, veteran bands are considered the best bands for a reason.  Their music is phenomenal and continues to stand the test of time, regardless of whether or not they are still active.</p>
<p>Yes, there have been some killer debuts full lengths (I&#8217;m thinking of the first albums from Krallice, Sickening Horror, Maruta, Dead Congregation, etc.) and there is also a crop of &#8220;new old school death metal&#8221; bands popping up that are impressing me quite a bit of late (i.e. Fatalist, Deathevokation, the aforementioned Necros Christos and Dead Congregation), but these bands are like rare diamonds amid a sea of bullshit third generation, Hot Topic sponsored metalcore, wigger mosh/deathcore, (plus god squad affiliated variations of these two),  faceless thrash and half-baked, overly produced, uber technical boredom (although I do like a fair share of tech death, there is a glut of it of late that does absolutely nothing for me.).</p>
<p>Then again, what might be even worse is the abundance of absolutely useless cookie-cutter bands in all extreme metal&#8217;s subgenres that do absolutely nothing to advance the scene with the creatively stunted drivel they choose to sour our ears with.  The 5 million wannabe Darkthrones out there (you know who you are) are just as pathetic as all the moshcore mental midgets out there pimping their lame shit to 14 year old girls on myspace, if not worse.  Unfortunately, there is as yet no way to police the metal underground for quality control, but I think it&#8217;s something we definitely need to work on.</p>
<p>Of course, in truth the real extreme metal underground is probably in far better shape than what approximates heavy music&#8217;s mainstream these days.  When the &#8220;popular&#8221; scene is being clogged with bands sporting dayglo t-shirt designs, floppy haircuts, stupid band names like See You Next Tuesday and The Devil Wears Prada and generally acting like a bunch of half-retarded wiggers, <strong>WE HAVE A FUCKING PROBLEM</strong>.  It can only mean its time for metal to go back underground where it belongs, to regroup, gestate and listen to fucking <em>Wolverine Blues</em>.  Either that or genocide, but I&#8217;m guessing that just isn&#8217;t a viable option at the moment.</p>
<p><a href="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/deathevokation-the-chalice-of-ages.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-121" title="Deathevokation - The Chalice of Ages" src="http://thatshowkidsdie.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/deathevokation-the-chalice-of-ages.jpg" alt="" width="342" height="342" /></a>Folks, it&#8217;s time to put the <strong>DEATH </strong>back in death metal.  And while there is no doubt that plenty of oldschool bands out there still &#8220;get it&#8221;, I grow increasingly concerned for the younger generation.  As I&#8217;ve said many times before, death metal should sound like it&#8217;s being played by a horde of zombies, freshly resurrected as part of a Satanic ritual and now using rusty powertools as instruments to create music that will usher in the apocalypse.  Kids today simply <strong>DO NOT GET IT</strong> for the most part.  For now the underground is by and large safe, but I can&#8217;t help but fear for the future.</p>

<p>Picked Richard Lange&#8217;s short story collection up last weekend at Green Apple and literally could not stop reading it.  I stayed up super late Sunday night, read it on trains etc and then all night Monday too.  I would say that this is &#8220;the best&#8221; short story collection I have ever read.  At least personally I would prefer this even to <em>Dubliners</em> (haha).</p>
<p>But seriously.  The stories are about LA, they&#8217;re extremely depressing and hardcore, and each one grabs the reader in a strangle-hold and doesn&#8217;t let go.  Read the reviews and believe the hype.   Lange even references the band The Dead Boys in some end notes.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Lords-Chaos-Bloody-Satanic-Underground/dp/0922915482"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-139" title="Lords_of_Chaos" src="http://nateeast.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/lords_of_chaos.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="336" /></a><em>Lords of Chaos</em>, the outrageously exhaustive, dense, and textbook-like history of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Early_Norwegian_black_metal_scene">Norwegian black metal </a>is another book that was very hard to put down.  Packed with stories and interview quotes that are too insane to be fictional, this is an extremely interesting read for anyone (like me) who is fascinated with youth subcultures, &#8220;underground&#8221; music, occultist groups, and other topics mentioned in<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Subculture-Meaning-Style-New-Accents/dp/0415039495"> this other awesome cultural analysis book on subcultures.</a></p>
<p>And some music!  Click the albums if you&#8217;re interested.  Apparently this week&#8217;s themes include jangly folk by Bon Iver&#8217;s old bandmates, bands who are featured prominently in <em>Lords of Chaos</em>, chillwave pop, and West Coast drug/art/ambient/atmospheric/pure-genius/how-is-Leviathan-AKA-Lurker-of-Chalice-AKA-Wrest-so-talented-and-all-of-his-releases-and-related-projects-are-so-awesome metal.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p align="justify">En ole tässä blogissa ilmeisesti aiemmin maininnut, että norjalaisen black metallin pioneeri <strong>Darkthrone </strong>on yksi suosikkibändeistäni. On ollut jo vuosia, on edelleen ja uskon olevan tulevaisuudessakin. Darkthronehan henkilöityy nykyään kahteen jäseneensä, <strong>Ted “Nocturno Culto” Skjellumiin</strong> ja <strong>Gylve “Fenriz” Nagelliin</strong>. Darkthrone on ollut jo 90-luvun puolivälistä lähtien pelkästään levyttävä yhtye, keikkoja kun bändi ei pitkän historiansa tehnyt kovinkaan montaa. Keikkailun laiminlyönti aiheuttaa sen, että bändin jäsenillä on enemmän aikaa omalle itselleen ja muiden projektien toteuttamiselle. Erityisesti Fenriz on kunnostautunut tällä rintamalla, miehellä kun ollut runsaasti erilaisia sivuprojekteja. Yksi vanhimmista on <strong>Isengard</strong>, jonka Fenriz perusti vuonna 1989 eli ennen kuin Darkthrone oli saanut ensimmäistä täyspitkää levyäänkään vielä pihalle.</p>
<p align="justify">Isengard oli puhtaasti Fenrizin projekti eikä siinä hänen lisäkseen muita ihmisiä vaikuttanut. Isengard erosi Darkthronesta jonkin verran, varsinkin mitä vanhemmaksi projektit ehtivät tulla. Vaikutteita Fenriz oli hakenut <strong>Lord of the Rings</strong>-kirjoista, kuten jo projektin nimestä pystyy päättelemään. Alussa molemmat orkesterit soittivat 80-lukuisen rupista ja primitiivistä death metallia. Vuonna 1989 kummaltakin tuli pihalle demo, Darkthronelta <strong>Cromlech </strong>ja Isengardilta <strong>Spectres over Gorgoroth. </strong>Kummallakin demolla ilmaisu on primitiivistä<strong>&#160;</strong>ja raakaa eli ne olivat juurikin oman aikakautensa tyypillisimpiä dm-kasettidemoja. Nämä nauhat eivät edes merkittävästi eroa toisistaan, mutta Darkthrone on hieman jalostetumpi. Olihan Cromlech jo Darkthronen neljäs demo, siinä missä Spectres over Gorgoroth oli vasta Isengardin ensimmäinen.</p>
<p align="justify">Vuonna 1991 Darkthrone oli päässyt julkaisemaan ensimmäisen täyspitkän levynsä eli <strong>Soulside Journeyn. </strong>Demojen suttuinen soundi oli kadonnut ja Darkthrone kuulosti hieman steriililtä, monimutkaiselta mutta tylyltä. Soulside Journey on sekin aikakaudelle tyypillistä death metallia ja vain joitakin soitannollisia ratkaisuja ja kliinisempää äänimaailmaansa lukuun ottamatta se kuulosti samalta kuin muutkin 90-luvun alun Skandinavian death metal-bändit. Samaan aikaan Isengardilta tuli <strong>Horizons</strong>-demo ja se olikin jo ihan erilaista se! Isengard alkoi lipua pois death metallista ja siirtyä kohti black metallia. Horizons oli edeltäjäänsä verrattuna myös monipuolisempi, sillä kaikki neljä biisiä kuulostavat erilaiselta. Demon aloittava <em>The Fog</em> hämää, sillä pelkästään sen kuuntelemalla voisi saada käsityksen ettei Isengard ole muuttunut edellisestä demosta juuri miksikään. Toinen raita, <em>Storm of Evil</em>, osoittaa jo että muutosta on tapahtunut. Biisi on keskitempoinen ja jopa rockahtava, jossa Fenriz kokeilee omaa, teatraalista lauluääntään ja biisi voidaan luokitella jo folk black metalliksi. <em>Bergtrollets Gravferd</em> eroaa näistä biiseistä jo kunnolla, sillä se on instrumentaali, jossa ainoana soittimena on peikkomainen syntikka. Biisi on sellaista ambientia, jota norjalaiset alkoivat tehdä hieman myöhemmin enemmänkin, etunenässä <a href="http://www.incipitum.sk/clanky/041001/mortiis.jpg"><strong>Mortiis</strong></a>. Päätösraita <em>Our Lord Will Come </em>sekoittaa pakkaa entisestään, sillä se on laahaava ja eeppinen doomahtavan black metallin taidonnäyte. Isengard alkoi jo kuulostaa itseltään eli Fenriziltä.</p>
<p align="justify">Vuoteen 1993 mennessä Darkthrone oli ehtinyt mullistaa itse itsensä täydellisesti. Death metal oli väistynyt ja tilalla oli raakaa ja minimalistista black metallia. Yksi sekä Darkthronen että koko genren parhaimmista levyistä, <strong>Under the Funeral Moon </strong>julkaistiin sinä vuonna. Fenrizillä riitti energiaa myös Isengardille, joka julkaisi kolmannen demonsa <strong>Vandreren.</strong> Vandreren jatkoi kehitystä ja kuulostaakin erilaiselta kuin Horizons. Fenriz panosti yhä enemmän sillisalaatin tekemiseen ja omaan äänenkäyttöönsä joten hänen äänensä onkin entistä jylhempi. Darkthroneen nähden Isengard on huomattavasti rauhallisempi, sillä se antaa kuulijalle lepotaukoja tunnelmallisten välikohtien merkeissä, demolla on pari instrumentaaliraitaa tätä varten. Mutta osasi Isengardkin olla raakakin, sillä paikoin (<em>Ut I Vannets Dyp Hvor Morket Hviler</em>)&#160; Isengard kuulostaa jälleen Darkthronelta. Koko demo on laulettu norjaksi ja demo on saanut vahvan folk metal-kuorrutuksen, jonka raameissa mennään. Nämä raamit eivät kuitenkaan rajoita Fenrizin tapaa ilmaista itseään vaan demo onkin yksi monipuolisimmista levytyksistä mitä Norjasta tuohon aikaan tuli.</p>
<p align="justify">Moni tässä luettelemani ominaisuus kuulostaa varmaan hyvinkin tutulta. Mutta kuinka yleistä tämänkaltainen ilmaisu oli 90-luvun alussa, jolloin black metallin toinen aalto oli vasta muotoutumassa? Eipä kovinkaan yleistä… Isengard olikin edelläkävijäbändi, tosin pienemmässä mittakaavassa kuin isoveljensä Darkthrone. Soundillisesti nämä demot ovat yhtä raakoja kuin Darkthronen alkupään tuotanto, joten hifisteillle näitä ei suositella. Fenrizillä riitti vielä puhtia<strong> </strong><a href="http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=2707"><strong>Høstmørke</strong></a><strong>-</strong>levyn tekemiseen vuonna 1995, jonka julkaisun jälkeen mies laittoi bändin telakalle. Levyä saa vielä esimerkiksi <a href="http://www.levykauppax.fi/artist/isengard/hostmorke/">Levykauppa Äxästä</a>, kuten myös nämä käsittelemäni kolme demoa yhteen niputtavaa <strong>Vinterskugge-</strong>kokoelmaa. Fenriz itse on vuonna 2007 todennut, ettei ymmärrä sitä minkä takia ihmiset (kuten minä) pitävät Isengardista niin paljon. Tästä voi päätellä, että Isengard on kuopattu lopullisesti.</p>

<p>One of the best examples of an unreadable logo is Immortal&#8217;s original design:</p>

<p>This is a very in-your-face logo, with barbed wire and an inverted cross as its centerpiece. Also notice the inverted pentagram above the inverted cross.The lettering is difficult to read, in a weirdly occult way.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s my point. Band logos are not only funny to look at, as Metalsucks does with the most extreme of them, but they are a bellweather for a band. When a logo changes, there&#8217;s a good chance that music is changing along with it. If you listen to the early Immortal, it&#8217;s much less accessible than the newer material&#8211;including &#8220;All Shall Fall,&#8221; which came out on October 6.</p>
<p>Immortal is not unique in  his regard. Other bands also polished their edges and modified their logo accordingly as time went by.</p>
<p>The legendary band Death began as a leader of a new genre, Death Metal. The original logo:</p>

<p>Others have remained consistent despite some serious changes. Darkthrone began as a run of the mill Death metal band; but they quickly revealed their awesome talent for dark melodies. Even when they migrated into Crust, they stuck to their original logo:</p>

<p>So they&#8217;re making a<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1385582/"> &#8216;Lords Of Chaos&#8217; movie</a>? Looking at the IMDB feedback, black metal fans are less-than-happy. I don&#8217;t blame them. Extreme music fares poorly on celluloid, and with loyalist fans who&#8217;ve long been marginalised periodically spotlighted, often &#8220;ironically&#8221; before being ignored again, they&#8217;ve got a right to carry a chip on their black-clad shoulders.</p>
<p>Punk and hardcore have been mistreated &#8211; think the<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSb1_kSOS6M"> &#8216;Iron Skull&#8217; Cro Mag rebrand in 1988&#8217;s &#8216;The Beat&#8217; </a>or more recently, the flawed &#8216;What We Do Is Secret&#8217;, yet black metal, surrounded by tales of mental church burners seemed to be, bar some sensationalist documentaries, left well alone. Plus, let&#8217;s be honest here, Horgh and team Immortal don&#8217;t need much assistance in looking pretty silly. Though one documentary appearance worthy of note is, in the otherwise dull &#8216;Metal: A Headbanger&#8217;s Journey&#8217; where a beered up Necrobutcher, bassist for Mayhem, goes off on the critics, and pretty much anyone&#8230;</p>

<p>Yet I&#8217;m not ready to hate on the &#8216;Lords Of Chaos&#8217; film in its pre-production stage, just because the creative team behind it is far from your usual Hollywood pick &#8211; Hans Fjellestad, the man behind the fine &#8216;Moog&#8217; documentary as a writer? Shion Sono, the director of the near four-hour &#8216;Love Exposure&#8217; as a documentary? Shion&#8217;s displayed a sensitivity to marginalised figures throughout his career, and it&#8217;s clear we probably won&#8217;t see a Jonas Brother playing Varg Vikernes. Well, not until a studio head gets involved.</p>
<p>The new Pushead-curated Juxtapoz gives a shout to the master of gloomy black metal imagery, Kris Verwimp, who like so many of the masters of extreme metal logos, is a painter and illustrator of great intricacy too. Here, I&#8217;m lumping black and death together, despite obvious differences sound, topic and appearance, just because the logos tend to crossover visually. For black metal, blackletter fonts like Cloister Black (the black metal cliche typeface of choice), the deliberately distressed German Underground and Wilhelm Klingspor Gotisch encapsulate gothic themes, and have reinforced stereotypes of nationalism that, despite sensationalist accounts, are often untrue.</p>

<p>Me? As a poseur spectator, I&#8217;m fascinated by the <a href="http://www.absinthechamber.com/2008/11/extreme-metal-logos-the-good-the-bad-and-the-illegible/">ongoing quest to get band logos to new heights of extremedom</a>. It&#8217;s an undisputed artform, and while I&#8217;m loathed to draw crude parallels, I&#8217;ll do it anyway &#8211; like graffiti, when the time came to up the ante, the artform went wildstyle. Some band names make themselves seen after a long squint. Others are lost amid the vines, thorns and spikes. But as with the folly of Brooklyn Kid, like a good handstyle, you can&#8217;t replicate a truly great metal band logo using a ready-made font. Waking The Cadaver, Triste and Min Kniv are fine examples of hard-to-read metal greatness.</p>

<p>Last year&#8217;s &#8216;Logos From Hell&#8217; book, by the brilliant Mark Riddick , <a href="http://www.riddickart.com">himself a force to be reckoned with</a> when it comes to logos and lettering, showcased work from the likes of <a href="http://www.myspace.com/ironworx_gravefix">Irwan Azman Awang</a> , Chilean artist <a href="http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewPicture&#38;friendID=151021058&#38;albumId=1117389">Daniel Desecrator </a>, <a href="http://www.jonzig.com/logos.html">Jon Zig</a>,  Christophe Szpajdel, who was profiled in Vice, and is also the subject of another interview<a href="http://www.maelstrom.nu/ezine/interview_iss7_74.php"> here</a>,  who, for all his talent seems content to keep his prolific output borderline hobbyist, and Mike Majewski, whose logos for Condemned Remains are available on stickers named &#8216;legible&#8217; and &#8216;brutal&#8217; with brutal being the most hard-to-read and messed-up. I think the gist of death metal logos is to get the brutality levels up as high as possible, even if legibility is the first victim.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Volvemos al Inner Circle para presentar a Darkthrone y a la mejor época de su carrera musical. Habiendo hablado ya de grupos como Burzum, y, antes de ser borrados por problemas con el blog, de Emperor, vamos con los otros grandes de entonces, un grupo que ha influído muchísimo en los actuales grupos que acogen el adjetivo true en su género.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Norwegian black metal, allá vamos, con uno de los mejores cd&#8217;s que se ha cosechado en el susodicho país de Noruega, con un gran factor pionero, que ha repercutido y repercutirá sobre las inspiraciones de cientos de grupos. Transilvanian Hunger es una auténtica obra maestra, tanto por lo clásico como por lo técnico, siendo el cuarto LP de Darkthrone, nacido en su etapa de mayor explendor.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Posiblemente éste sea el mejor trabajo que han sacado ellos, junto con su anterior Under a Funeral Moon, o su primer LP, Soulside Journey. La verdad es que hay pocas diferencias de estilo entre ellos (a diferencia de lo que ha pasado con sus últimos trabajos, que están divagando un poco demasiado, sobretodo con ese Dark Thrones and Black Flags, el cual decidí tomarme hace tiempo como un trabajo de cachondeo), lo que demuestra que no necesitaron para nada incorporar innovaciones o variar su estilo clásico y típico para conseguir tres discazos, les bastaba con su talento y su inspiración (en especial el de Fenriz).</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Para entonces, sus inicios, el grupo estaba formado únicamente por el famoso dueto <em>Nocturno Culto</em> &#8211; <em>Fenriz</em>. El primero se ocupaba de las voces únicamente, y Fenriz pulía todo el aspecto instrumental metiéndole mano al bajo, la guitarra y a la batería. Por si esto no fuese poco, también se hizo cargo de las líricas, acabando el solito con casi todo el trabajo de este gran Transilvanian Hunger.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Este disco es tan sencillo como brillante. La mayoría de canciones no pasan de tres riffs, que se van alternando en esos cinco minutos de media de cada una. El bajo sigue de forma simple la línea de las guitarras, y el trabajo de la batería se compone de buenos ritmos algo repetitivos y básicos. Así que, toda la instrumentación, aunque muy sencilla, es muy efectiva, y forma atmósferas frías, oscuras y bastante carpatianas durante casi cuarenta minuto. Sin duda, el trabajo justo, y poco apasionado de Fenriz sobra para hacer de toda esto algo bastante efectivo.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Dejando a <em>Nocturno Culto</em> para el final, las voces tampoco se salen de la línea general del black, aún siendo algo muy virtuoso para entonces.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">Poco más que decir, es el famoso Transilvanian Hunger, sobran interpretaciones, opiniones e información sobre él. Disfrutadlo</p>

The production on this album is top notch, even though that snare really pounds holes into your head due to the piercing ring of it, but this gives the album that uncomfortable feeling that should arise from good black metal. The vocals are the next item of interest. Noticeably loud in the mix, the singers deep croaking style is of the dark and twisted spoken word variety, very even keel in his performance, at times reminding me of Atilla in the way he phrases words and the overall style. The music itself is your standard black metal institution of frenzied and chaotic riffs that stir the storm of stress and agitation in the listener. This out of key noise attack makes perfect sense in this style of music, but it also makes it difficult to absorb the material, making the listeners still standing and wanting the abuse, have to dig back in numerous times to fully comprehend the “songs” that are on display. Kult Ofenzivy create 1 dimensional black metal and they do it well, allowing their over the top, dynamics be damned, writing style and overall sound, to propel them into the “keeper” pile in my collection. I’m not sure how often I’m going to spin something like this, but I have somehow enjoyed the simplistic material on display. –Marty</p>

Her er mitt første intervju med ham fra 2004.</p>

<p><em></em>Bergen, april 2002. Den amerikanske fotografen Peter Beste er hyret for å knipse pressebilder av det norske black metal-bandet Gorgoroth for det tyske plateselskapet Nuclear Blast. Musikerne er kledd fra topp til tå i lær, nagler og liksminke, men idet gutta løper inn i bilen som skal bringe dem ut av sentrum oppstår et perfekt fotoøyeblikk. Beste knipser trommeslageren Kvitrafn idet de forbipasserende bergensfruene ikke vet hvor de skal feste øynene.</p>
<p>- Det er noe magisk og romantisk over hvordan norske black metal-musikere kler seg, oppfører seg og tenker. Det er som om de tilhører en annen tid og verden, forteller Beste.</p>
<p>Møtet mellom Kvitrafns black metal-verden og dagliglivet i bergensgatene inngår i <em>The Norwegian Black Metal Project</em>, som Beste har jobbet med siden 2002 (2009-kommentar: siden omdøpt til <em>True Norwegian Black Metal</em>). Denne uken ankom fotografen Norge for femte gang, og om et halvt år håper han å være i mål med arbeidet. Det skal ende i både utstilling og bok i coffee table-format, og Beste har allerede stilt ut flere av bildene i New York.</p>

<p><strong>Brutal musikk, brutale historier<br />
</strong>Fotografen oppdaget norsk black metal hjemme i Texas i 1997, og ble raskt fascinert av den brutale musikken og de enda mer brutale historiene om kirkebranner, drap og selvmord som danner mytologien i musikkformen som har satt Norge på det ekstreme musikkartet. I 2002 begynte Beste arbeidet med å komme musikerne inn på livet, og målet er å fotografere og intervjue alle de viktigste aktørene i miljøet.</p>
<p>- I utgangspunktet ble jeg dratt mot black metal av de groteske historiene, den mørke atmosfæren og estetikken, men målet mitt er å vise at musikerne har langt mer substans enn klisjeene tilsier. Jeg vil ikke lage et «freakshow», for dette er snakk om seriøse og dedikerte musikere. På den ene siden er de lei av å bli knyttet til kirkebranner og drap, men på den andre siden har de innsett at de tross alt har tjent på oppmerksomheten. Norsk black metal står i dag i en særstilling verden rundt, både på grunn av musikken og alle historiene rundt.</p>
<p>Beste vil vise både musikernes profesjonelle ansikt og menneskene bak liksminken. Derfor fotograferer han artister i full black metal-mundur med rennende rødmaling og oppned-kors og musikere i hverdagen. Samoth i black metal-legendene Emperor fotograferes i lek med sin seks år gamle datter, Gaahl i Gorgoroth knipses i «sivil» på hjemplassen Espedal i Sogn og Fjordane, mens Fenriz i pionèrene Darkthrone avbildes på hjemmebane på rockepuben Elm Street i Oslo. Dette er unike bilder av musikere som nordmenn flest knapt har hørt om, men som nyter gedigen kultstatus verden rundt.</p>
<p>- De fleste var ganske skeptiske og reserverte i starten, men med tiden har jeg klart å oppnå tillit &#8211; og sådan kommet dem inn på livet.</p>

<p><strong>En usosial scene<br />
</strong>Beste innså raskt at black metal er en livsstil for de aller fleste musikerne, og ikke en maske de ikler seg idet de entrer scenen.</p>
<p>- I motsetning til andre musikalske subkulturer opplever jeg ikke black metal som en spesiell sosial scene. Er det noe disse musikerne har felles er det et misantropisk syn på livet, en skepsis mot store deler av menneskeheten, hat mot kristendommen og en påtrengende individualisme. De er ganske egosentriske, og mange er oppvokst på småsteder i Sør-Norge.</p>
<p>I utgangspunktet trodde Beste store deler av black metal-scenen var satanister, men anslår at bare rundt ti prosent av de han har møtt kan karakteriseres som dette. De aller fleste er derimot innbitte motstandere av kristendommen.</p>
<p>- Flere er opptatt av norrøn gudetro og paganisme, og misliker sterkt at Norge ble kristnet med brutal makt i vikingtiden. Det var også noe av bakgrunnen for kirkebrannene på 1990-tallet. Norge ble kristnet med vold, og burde følgelig avkristnes med de samme virkemidlene.</p>
<p>Der denne motstanden tidligere manifesterte seg i kirkebranner på det mest ekstreme, handler black metal anno 2004 først og fremst om musikk, tekster og ideologi. Selv om miljøet fremstår som svært uniformert sett utenfra, er det rom for variasjoner internt.</p>
<p>- Black metal er en veldig spesifikk genre med tydelige tegn til uniformering: Langt, svart hår, svarte klær, nagler og gjerne liksminke på scenen. Man har funnet en formel som fungerer både visuelt og lydmessig, og det skal ikke så mye avvik til før du ender opp i en annen genre. Samtidig er black metal de siste årene blitt mer åpen, både tekstmessig og musikalsk. Og den har til og med kommet seg inn på salgslistene, i form av grupper som Dimmu Borgir og Satyricon, avslutter Beste.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">William Burroughs acuño el termino Heavy Metal en su novela de 1964 Nova Express, donde nombraba a uno de los personajes “Uranian Willy The Heavy Metal Kid”. El crítico de rock Lester Bangs tomó ese término, para describir el sonido de Black Sabbath, que incorporaba tambores que retumbaban como truenos, bajos plomizos, guitarras entrecruzadas y vocales de sirena, con letras que hablaban del lado oscuro de la humanidad. Su álbum debut de 1970 <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?1nmbzn1nwm3">“Black Sabbath”</a> dio origen a un género, que ha mutado desde entonces, en un imparable bacilo, sin cura conocida.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-1016" title="Blue Öyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation" src="http://markeneu.wordpress.com/files/2009/06/blue-oyster-cult-tyranny-and-mutation.jpg" alt="Blue Öyster Cult - Tyranny and Mutation" width="400" height="400" /></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Para finales de los ’60 grupos como Cream, Blue Cheer, Steppenwolf, MC5 y The Stooges aceleraron el volumen y la energía de la música, pero el Metal era más extremo, tanto sónica como visualmente. En los 70 Blue Öyster Cult se acerco bastante a la forma en que le Metal sería forjado en el futuro con la trilogía de sus primeros álbumes, donde mezclaban las ideas del escritor H.P Lovecraft con imaginería histórica de la segunda guerra mundial. En 1975, en el London Hammersmith Odeon, sin embargo, BÖC tuvieron como soportes a una formación embrional de Motörhead, que serían los representantes del Metal en toda su salvaje gloria. En otro lado y a través de todo el Reino Unido otras cepas del género estaban siendo incubadas. En 1982 la banda de New Castle, Venom, lanzó Black Metal, un punto de referencia para los grupos de guitarra adoradores de cabras, que hicieron del Black Metal en género por derecho propio. Arrastrados, pateando y gritando dentro del movimiento denominado “New Wave of British Heavy Metal”, el acercamiento de militantes satanistas de Venom, fue causa de burlas entre los críticos, pero devorado por los devotos de la música extrema que consideraban la inflexible barrera de distorsión y caos de la banda, la única alternativa a las bandas mainstream como Def Leppard y Girlschool. Los himnos de Venom (descriptos por el bajista Cronos como “las canciones de amor de Satanás) como “Poison” y especialmente “Live Like an Angel, Die Like a Devil” fueron responsables de desatar hordas de extremistas escandinavos del Black Metal.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Punta de lanza del movimiento, fueron grupos legendarios como Mayhem, Burzum y Darkthrone, los grupos nórdicos convocaban oscuros y escalofriantes estallidos sónicos que consumían por completo al oyente y, como una ceremonia mágica, no ofrecían ninguna salida hasta que el hechizo/canción estaba completo/a.  </p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Igualmente importante en este punto fue el surgimiento del Death Metal y el Grindcore, un hibrido salvaje de Heavy Metal y Hardcore-Punk. El disco debut del grupo Napalm Death, Scum (87), le dio al Death Metal/Grindcore el OK para infectar a la nación. Otros participantes significativos en la propagación de la enfermedad fueron Extreme Noise Terror, Carcass, Entombed, Autopsy, Morbid Angel y Caníbal Corpse, todos los cuales se especializaban en tocar a velocidades inhumanas, con letras que se concentraban en los horrores viscerales de lo mortuorio, y los efectos posteriores de un ataque nuclear.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Aunque estaban completamente distanciados de la escena Metal, el grupo artcore de New York, Swans (Junto a Sonic Youth, y la sobreviviente de la No Wave Lydia Lunch) fueron igualmente responsables de despellejar al rock, para exponer los huesos. El disco de 1983 de Swans, <a href="http://rapidshare.com/files/188701924/Swans_-_Filth__1983_.zip">Filth</a>, proyectaba puro poder a través de episodios amplificados de sonidos vibrantes y ondas metálicas de guitarras afiladas. Los retratos violentos de dominación sexual y sumisión, tortura y aislamiento social, del  cantautor/vocalista Michael Gira, eran pintados aún más oscuros, por las explosiones de baja frecuencia del grupo, que amenazaba con absorber todo el aire del estudio. Como los primeros practicantes de ritmos abstractos, volumen colosal y letras con una imaginería desolada- factores que resuenan subliminales, en el trabajo de las huestes más jóvenes- Swans, también estaban concientes que, dentro de su capullo aparentemente impenetrable de hardcore noise, otra manifestación musical, más sutil y provocadora estaba tomando forma.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Bajando la velocidad y subiendo el volumen, el rock baboso de Swans alimentó los primeros movimientos de la escena Stoner Metal, aunque sus verdaderas raíces pueden ser rastreadas hasta los primeros discos de Black Sabbath y el grupo seminal de Dylan Carlson, Earth. El espíritu de la serie de estudios electrónicos, Drift Studies, del compositor minimalista La Monte Young, es detectable en el uso distintivo que hace el Stoner Metal, del uso de extensas resonancias desafinadas de guitarra y bajo, pulsando particularmente fuertes en los hipnóticos y poderosos zumbidos de Sunn O))).</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Otros fuera de la jerarquía del Metal, lo están usando como una herramienta para canalizar sus ideas hacia áreas musicales más extremas. Esta categoría incluye a los artistas del sello electrónico Mego, Pita, Kevin Drumm y Russell Haswell. En Japón, el emperador noise, Merzbow, siempre ha apoyado al Metal como un medio para sus propias creaciones, junto con Masonna y el guitarrista Zeni Geva. El compositor y músico de New York, John Zorn, utilizó al Metal de manera consistente en sus gurpos/proyectos Naked City y Painkiller, alimentándose de la energía de la música y la imaginería tabú de sus carátulas de discos, mientras que el joven trío noruego Noxagt, acercándose a la herencia de su país en el Black Metal, en una variante más cuidadosamente ejecutada, usando una estructura instrumental, compuesta por bajo, batería y viola eléctrica, señala que el Metal, como género, se esta reconfigurando.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Combinado con el poder, intensidad y concentración que la música demanda, el otro atractivo del Metal para el no aficionado, es que, sigue siendo uno de los últimos bastiones de la música underground. Con su propia red social – que produce y distribuye discos (muchas veces en tiradas limitadas y en vinilo) y reúne a los fieles cuanto una banda en particular esta en el lugar – que sigue dentro de la tradición inaugurada por el Free Jazz y el Punk Rock. Hoy la escena Metal esta rebeldemente activa, mostrando ningún signo de cansancio.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Formada en 1990 en Olimpia, Washington, por el guitarrista y dronemeister, Dylan Carlson, junto al guitarrista y fundador del sello Kill Rock Stars, Slim Moon y el vocalista Greg Babior, Earth tomo su nombre de la primordial encarnación de Black Sabbath. Después de grabar su álbum debut Extra-Capsular Extractions en 1991 – con contribuciones de Kurt Cobain, el bajista Dave Harwell y el bajista/percusionista, Joe Preston – el grupo se dividió, dejando a Carlson y Harwell a cargo de la producción del segundo álbum, Earth 2, un apocalíptico ataque de guitarras drone que sentó las bases para el todavía no nacido Stoner-Rock. Entregado con la amenaza y velocidad de un bombardero stealth calentando sus motores, Earth 2, exitosamente confundió y enojó a todos los que previamente habían etiquetado a Sub Pop como un sello grunge,  desacelerando todo y reduciendo el moshpit a puré con una frecuencia de arrastre super-grave de una parte a otra de la barriga del rock, relacionando todo, desde “Iron Man”  de Black Sabbath, hasta los experimentos con drones de la Velvet Underground post-La Monte Young. En su momento Earth 2, fue considerado como una broma, pero con la llegada de grupos como Growing y Sunn O))), el álbum es ahora visto como una gran influencia. Desde su reedición, hecha por Sub Pop en “special low frequency versión” y como triple vinilo, es sin dudas su obra maestra.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">En 1995 Carlson y el nuevo miembro de Earth, Ian Dickson, hicieron una breve aparición en Disobey, el club que el sello Blast First tiene en Londres, donde interpretaron “Ripped on Fascist Ideas”, una pieza para dos guitarras que luego fue editada en edición limitada, por Blast First. Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars Live, contiene este track y agrega cuatro ejemplos más del primer Earthquakes de principio de los ’90, como bonus. El riff Metal de frecuencia grave evocado en SAASGL, también se asomaba en el álbum de 1996, Pentastar: In the Style of Demons, que Carlson grabo junto al guitarrista Shawn McElligot y el baterista Mike McDaniels. Aquí un versión estabilizada del grupo dio más énfasis a la producción un circulo de canciones cercanos a la perfección, el hotrod verde lima de su portada, era el perfecto indicador de donde se encontraba el estado mental de Earth como banda. Enterrado entre dos losas masivas de monumentales riffs, hay una serie de igualmente  estimulantes que van desde explosiones de amplificadores desmantelados, al Burzum de la última época Ambient-Drone, hasta la hostilidad de los experimentos de Fluxus con pianos rotos.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Originalmente formada por O’Malley y Anderson en 2000 como una banda tributo a Earth, el trueno de las resonantes guitarras del dúo Sunn O))), fueron diseñadas específicamente para revolver las entrañas de su audiencia. Tomando el nombre de la marca de amplificadores utilizada por Earth, las grabaciones y presentaciones de Sunn O))) se asemejan a rituales. Su álbum debut, ØØ Void, indicaba hacia donde se dirigían, sus cuatro extensos tracks, llenos de estremecedores zumbidos de guitarra eléctrica, despertaban los poderes dormidos de Earth y Swans. Más tarde ese mismo año, editaron The Grimmerobe Demos, que originalmente venía envuelto en una bolsa plástica negra, con el logo de la banda pintado en dorado, como un talismán secreto. Grabado en 1998 y más crudo que ØØ Void, Grimm Robe, despojó el sonido de O’Malley y Anderson, llevándolo de nuevo a las bases en las invocaciones sónicas como “Black Wedding (Lament For A Nordic Vision Buried By Time &#38; Dust)” y “Dylan Carlson”. Su grabación más brutal hasta la fecha, es el portal perfecto para el emocionante umbral de dolor de Sunn O))).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Para Flight of the Behemoth, el grupo invito al alquimista noise Masami Akita (aka Merzbow) para que mezclara dos tracks. La movida dio como resultado el taladrante pulso del ruido blanco electrónico, ondulando la oscurecida barriga de su monstruosa creación.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Los invitados en White 1, incluyen al anticuario psicodélico Julian Cope aportando voces y a un ex miembro de Earth, el bajista Joe Preston, mientras que White 2 presenta los derroteros operísticos de Attila Csihar (vocalista de la legendaria banda noruega de Black Metal Mayhem, en el disco Mysteriis Dom Satanás). Es la constante atención a los detalles dentro del género – junto al contacto realmente físico que existe entre el artista y su audiencia, a través del sonido – lo que hace constantemente valuables los experimentos de O’Malley y Anderson con Sunn O))).</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Descriptos por Dylan Carlson como “la banda de sonido de dos babosas cogiendo”, el disco Absolutego, del trío japonés de Stoner Rock Boris, tomo el arte de las guitarras drone inspiradas en los Melvins, a nuevas alturas, en una sola canción de más de una hora de duración. Sin embargo su mejor logro, es canalizar el ruido abstracto del noise-rock, transformándolo en minimalismo eléctrico antes de finalizar con un efecto agudo de guitarra que suena como un piano electrónico tocado por Charlemagne Palestine. </p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Amplifier Worship es más variado con canciones que van del himno al drone, explosiones a toda velocidad de electricidad que recuerdan a los primeros Boredoms, hasta trabajos más experimentales para guitarra y percusión. El hambre del trío por la experimentación los llevó a unirse con varias figuras claves del underground japonés. En Boris With Merzbow, la barrera noise electrónica de Masami Akita, actúa como un aleteo ambient de fondo y una fuente de poder para que Boris alce el volumen de sus amplificadores naranjas y juntos curven el aire.</p>

Completo con una sutil cubierta diseñada por Tina Frank, con sus iniciales en letras goticas doradas sobre fondo negro, SHM es un destilado de cada disco de Metal que Drumm escuchó, que el devuelve como una serie de dañados estallidos de ruido blanco. En el momento de su lanzamiento SHM, represento el sonido del futuro Metal; siete años después, la personalizada interpretación del género a cargo de Drumm, todavía suena peligrosamente fresca. <span style="color:#888888;">Pass:Robixxx.</span></p>

<p>En milliard kroner i året må til for å redde Norges eldste skogsområder. Blir det for dyrt, har fotograf Morten Andersen tatt fine bilder av de verneverdige områdene.</p>
<p>20 sekunder er gått siden Morten Andersen forlot den trygge stien, og allerede nå sklir han i full fart ned den bratte skråningen mot skogbunnen – med både rumpa og fotoapparatet full av gjørme.</p>
<p>– Jeg går ikke i skogen for moro skyld.</p>
<p>For Andersen er gjørme på kameralinsen det samme som møkk under neglene for kontorslaven. Han og kameraet er mer vant til å dukke unna øl og svette i Rocke-Oslo og nattelivet i verdens metropoler, men etter arbeidet med <em>Days of Night</em> i Tokyo og New York tidlig på 2000-tallet ble Andersen så lei av folk, byer og natteliv at han stakk til skogs.</p>
<p>– Jeg har alltid vært ute i skauen, men aldri jobbet med et seriøst naturprosjekt. Å fotografere handler om å utforske steder og miljøer jeg ikke kjenner så godt fra før, så nå leter jeg etter skogsområder som er vernet eller verneverdige, og velger ut steder som har noe med seg. Ellers blir det bare bilder av busker og kratt.</p>

<p><strong>Romerikes regnskog</strong><br />
Vi er på vei innover i Romerike landskapsvernområde, 5000 dekar med leireskråninger, ravinebunner, skogsneller, bregner, blomster og fuglesang på grensen mellom Ullensaker og Nannestad kommune. Flystøyen fra Gardermoen forsvinner i takt med at vi beveger oss nedover de bratte leireskråningene, og vi omsvøpes av området som Naturvernforbundet i Oslo og Akershus beskriver som «det nærmeste man kommer tropisk regnskog her til lands, kanskje ikke i biologisk forstand, men opplevelsesmessig».</p>
<p>– Dette er ikke forskning, jeg er ikke interessert i friluftsliv og gjør dette definitivt heller ikke for spenningens skyld.</p>
<p>Skogsfotograferingen er i skjæringspunktet kunst og dokumentar som de fleste andre av Andersens prosjekter. Den personlige opplevelsen er det viktigste, og planen er å jobben utover sommeren og høsten, med utstilling i Porsgrunn kunstforening i november og bokutgivelse i 2009 som mål.</p>
<p>– Men prosjektet har også en politisk side. Norge har forsvinnende lite gammel skog, områder som er viktig å bevare på grunn av de utrydningstruede dyrene og plantene som lever i de døde trærne. Den gamle skogen er naturens skattkiste</p>
<p>Andersen beveget seg inn i skogen i 2003, og selv om han fortsatt ikke viser Lars Monsen-takter er han blitt noen hakk mer profesjonell i sitt forhold til naturen. Der han tidligere kunne ende opp våt, sulten og på villspor, har han nå med både niste og gummistøvler. Og skal han overnatte, sover han i bilen der «rock’n’roll forever»-klistremerket hans skremmer unna elg og innpåslitne fugler.</p>
<p>– Dessuten har jeg kart, men ikke kompass.</p>

<p><strong>Økt engasjement<br />
</strong>Morten Andersen har bare truffet biller, fugler og en og annen elg på sine skogsturer, men prosjektet hans treffer tidsånden. I 1998 ble Norges eldste grantre felt i Trillemarka i Rollag kommune i Buskerud, 507 år gammel. Nå står granens gjenlevende lillebror på 484 år trygt igjen i et nyetablert verneområde samme sted. Opprinnelig ble det anbefalt å verne 200 kvadratkilometer i det største verneverdige skogsområdet i Sør-Norge, men kommunen og grunneierne ønsket bare å verne halvparten.</p>
<p>I januar 2008 kompromisset Stoltenberg-regjeringen frem en verning av 147 kvadratkilometer skog, noe som betyr at hogsten kan fortsette som før i over 50 kvadratkilometer med svært verneverdig skog. Både skogeiere, regjering og naturvernere ruster nå til økt kamp og debatt om fremtiden til Norges andre gamle trær.</p>
<p>For Andersen er ikke den eneste gammelrockeren som engasjerer seg for enda eldre trær. «Vi må ha store, gamle og døende trær i våre skoger,» skrev Gylve Fenris Nagell, frontmann i black metal-bandet Darkthrone, i en kronikk i Aftenposten 13. april, sammen med Mikael Ohlson, professor ved Universitetet i miljø- og biovitenskap i Ås. Duoen mener bevaring av gamle trær er en nødvendighet dersom Norge skal stoppe tapet av biologisk mangfold innen 2010, som vedtatt av Stortinget.</p>
<p>De får støtte av Sigmund Hågvar, medforfatter av den ferske boken <em>Norsk natur – farvel?</em>.</p>
<p>– Vern av gammel skog er det viktigste enkelttiltaket for å redde truede arter i Norge. Vi snakker om spetter og ugler, hundrevis av biller, sopper og andre organismer.</p>
<p>I boken slår Hågvar fast at ved strenge krav til grad av urørthet, utgjør urskogsrestene langt under én prosent av det totale skogsarealet i Norge. Samtidig finnes 48 prosent av de 3799 artene på den norske rødlisten i skogen, arter som er mer eller mindre truet av utryddelse. Mange er avhengig av gammel skog og døde trær for å overleve.</p>
<p>– Ekte urskog finner vi i dag nesten bare i furuskogen i Øvre Pasvik nasjonalpark i Finnmark, men i Trillemarka finnes urskogsnære lommer som har vært lite påvirket av mennesker, forklarer Hågvar.</p>
<p>Han er til daglig professor i natur- og miljøvern ved Universitetet for miljø- og biovitenskap i Ås, og brekker ned de forskjellige definisjonene av skog for oss:</p>
<p>* I «urskogen» har mennesker ytterst sjelden hogd trær.<br />
* «Naturskogen» har vært plukkhogd, det vil si at trær er hogd enkeltvis før flathogsten begynte på 1950-tallet.<br />
* «Kulturskog» er områder der mennesker planter på nytt i områder med flathogst.</p>

Leira<br />
</strong>Tilbake på Romerike klatrer Morten Andersen opp på en liten stein, setter opp stativet og fyrer løs i skogen. Han er ikke så opptatt av dyrene i skogen, men jakter på de særegne trærne og landskapene – eller rettere sagt rommene som åpner seg mellom trærne.</p>
<p>– Jeg vet ikke helt hva jeg ser etter, det bare åpner seg opp for meg, og jeg jobber litt på intuisjon. Jeg ser etter rommene i skogen, men hver gang jeg finner noe fett, åpenbarer det seg noe enda bedre rundt neste sving eller bakketopp.</p>
<p>Andersen fotograferer en spjæret trestamme som strekker seg mot himmelen, mens en veltet og yngre kollega fortsatt vokser inn i de veltede treet. De døde trærne gir liv til de yngre.</p>
<p>– Jeg vet ikke en gang hva trærne her heter, det er vel or eller ask eller noe sånt. Men jeg ser etter kaos, når ting går litt på skrå som dette. Jeg jobber raskt og tar 10-12 filmer på hver skogstur, for jeg tar verdens kjedeligste bilder når jeg begynner å tenke.</p>
<p>Overgangen fra rock til skog, fra betong til natur, fra uteliv til friluftsliv skjøt fart etter at Andersen kjøpte seg et Maimya-kamera i Tokyo under arbeidet med <em>Days of Night</em>.</p>
<p>– Jeg begynte å fotografere i skogen på samme vis som jeg knipset folk på gatene, med grovkornet svart/hvitt-film, med mye bevegelse og sterke kontraster. Men det endte bare i pinlige, klisjéaktige stemninger.</p>
<p>Prosessen gikk først sakte. Maimya-kameraet var uvant å jobbe med, han måtte bruke stativ for første gang i karrieren, og begynte å eksperimentere med farger. Den siste biten falt på plass da han begynte å bruke kunstfilm med høy lysfølsomhet ute i det grønne, film som i hovedsak brukes innendørs.</p>
<p>– Resultatet ble andre farger enn de jeg så med mitt eget øye. Det var kanskje «feil» farger i forhold til virkeligheten, men resultatet ble både realistisk og magisk.</p>
<p>Nå trengte Andersen bare et prosjekt, noe konkret. Det fant han ikke langt unna barndomstraktene på Romerike: Elven Leira. Ved Nannestad blir det klare vannet fra Romeriksåsene farget brungrått av leire, og slynger seg videre gjennom raviner med tett vegetasjon og bratte skrenter til den renner ut i Øyeren. Resultatet ble både bok og utstilling, der hverdagslig norsk natur på magiskrealistisk vis forvandles til trolske stemninger, mystiske farger og eventyraktige landskap. Da D2 i høst tok bilde av den ledende fotoboksamleren Martin Parr hjemme i hans egen leilighet, sto tre av fotobøkene til Morten Andersen i hylla.</p>
<p>– Han mente <em>Leira</em> var det mest radikale prosjektet mitt, og det var moro. Etter at jeg var ferdig med Leira i 2006, gikk jeg vekk fra elven og dypere inn i skogen.</p>

Skogen vokser<br />
</strong>Bekymringene om urskogen til tross, den norske skogen vokser faktisk. Antallet norske trær er større enn noensinne siden man begynte å holde tellingen i 1919, fordi mange av Norges rundt 120.000 skogeiere ikke satser på tømmerhogging. «Skogen råtner på rot» advarte Gro Follo og Reidar Almås ved Norsk senter for bygdeforskning i Aftenposten 6. mars. De pekte på farene ved at Norge bare hugger ti millioner av den årlige tilveksten på 25 millioner kubikkmeter skog i året.</p>
<p>– Debatten er avhengig av hvilke briller du har på deg, mener Sigmund Hågvar.</p>
<p>Med naturvernbriller er bevaring av skog og artsmangfold en viktig del av skogforvaltningen.</p>
<p>– Tar du derimot på deg skogbrukerbriller, er skogen hundrelapper på rot, og du kan tillate deg å hogge like mye som skogen vokser. Men jeg mener det viktigste tiltaket skogeierne kan gjennomføre er å la mer død ved bli liggende. Skogbruket har sitt eget ansvar for å ta vare på artsmangfoldet der det hogges.</p>
<p>Hågvar mener bare rester av restene av den opprinnelige norske urskogen vernes i dag, og at det haster med å redde de siste naturskogene og urskogslignende miljøene.</p>
<p>– I dag har vi vernet 1,5 prosent av den norske skogen, men faglige utredninger tilråder at vi verner minst 4,5 prosent, som i Sverige og Finland. Det er en tredobling, og skal vi virkelig stoppe tap av biologisk mangfold innen 2010 har vi dårlig tid.</p>
<p>For å nå målet mener Hågvar at de årlige bevilgningene til erstatning til skogeiere må økes fra 100 millioner kroner i året til minst en milliard.</p>
<p>– Sverige bruker nesten en milliard kroner i året på skogvern, Finland bruker en halv milliard. Jeg tror vi etter hvert havner på nivå med Sverige og Finland, men i dag går utviklingen så langsomt at mange av de mest verneverdige områdene hogges mens vi venter. I det meste av Europa er disse verdiene allerede tapt, Danmark har for eksempel ikke en kvadratmeter urskog igjen. Vi har også et europeisk ansvar her.</p>
<p>På Romerike knekker Morten Andersen noen kvister på vei ned mot elven der det hele begynte, Leira. Ved elvebredden forteller han hvordan han føler et nærmere slektskap til klassiske landskapsmalere som Lars Hertervig og Herman August Cappelen enn samtidens norske naturfotografer.</p>
<p>– Det er ikke mye som er like gjennomfotografert som norsk natur, men det meste blir for pent, ordentlig og realistisk for min smak. De gamle landskapsmalerne var ikke så opptatt av realisme, men mer opptatt av å formidle stemningen i de dype skogene. Maleriene er jo den eneste dokumentasjonen vi har igjen etter den virkelige urskogen, men hvor riktige de var, vet man jo ikke.</p>

<strong>Mayhem</strong>, norjalaisen black metal -skenen ytimessä operoinut ja operoiva metalliyhtye</p>
<p>Olen ollut molemmista ilmiöistä kiinnostunut niin kauan kuin kykenen muistamaan. Sinkkuelämää on ehdottomimpia suosikkisarjojani, voin sarjaa katsomalla käydä läpi lähes kaikki tunteet haikeudesta inhoreaktioon, ja rakastan sarjan vaatteita, kenkiä, laukkuja, miljöötä (Manhattan on kuvattu niin ihanana), hahmoja kaikessa överiydessään ja niin ja niin edelleen. Ihastelen Carrien ja kumppaneiden elämää, johon kuuluvat tosi siistit ammatit, himmeä palkka ja silti työtunteja viikossa ehkä hikiset kuusi! Ja aikaa ja rahaa on kenkien shoppailun ohessa myös kavereiden ja miesten näkemiselle ja erilaisten kahviloiden, kuppiloiden ja kutsuvierasbileiden läpi koluamiselle. Vaikka tietenkin tiedän, että sarja on yhtä realistinen kuin <strong>Paris Hilton</strong>in kesämökki vantaalaisessa lähiössä, olen silti aivan koukussa ja jaksan sarjan johdosta inspiroitua vöiden lajitteluun tai spontaaniin kahvihetkeen kaupungilla ja saan siitä paljon riemua ja piristettä päiviini. </p>
<p>Toisaalta minussa elää vahvana kiinnostus ihmisen pimeään (ja samalla mielestäni kirkkaimpaan) puoleen. Esoteria, filosofia, aatteellinen misantropia, satanismi, okkultismi &#8211; kaikki lähellä sydäntäni. En lähde sen kummemmin tässä yhteydessä erittelemään, mitä näillä termeillä tarkoitan, sillä se menee jo liian henkilökohtaiseksi tämän bloginkin puitteissa. Sen voin kuitenkin mainita, että musiikki toimii hyvänä kanavana käsitellä tätäkin aihepiiriä. Paitsi omakohtaisista syistä, olen kiinnostunut black metalista yleisesti &#8211; sen historiasta ja nykytilasta paitsi osana populaarikulttuuria myös yhteiskunnallisena ilmiönä. Olenkin vuosien saatossa kolunnut läpi useita kymmeniä, ellen jopa satoja aiheesta kirjoitettuja kirjoja ja lehtiartikkeleita (mukaan lukien erilaiset bändihaastattelut). Olen arkistoinut niitä itselleni talteen valtavat määrät. Minua kiehtoo etenkin ilmiön ristiriitaisuus sekä se, millaiset ihmiset ja millä tavoin he kiinnostuvat ko. kulttuurin karsinasta. En väitä tietäväni asiasta juuri mitään, mutta olen valtavan kiinnostuksen vallassa ottanut asiasta selvää jo pidemmän aikaa. </p>
<p>Sinkkuelämää-sarjan lisäksi rakastan ns. <a href="http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chick_lit">chick-lit</a>-kirjallisuutta, eli juuri sitä hömppää, joka saa silti liikuttumaan ja naurattamaan. Pidän höppänistä rakkausjuonista ajanvietteenä. Niistä tarinoista, joissa päähenkilö on juuri aloittanut uudessa työpaikassa ja oho hups, hän ihastuukin varattuun/maailman ärsyttävimpään/täysin erilaiseen pomoonsa, jota ei voi tietenkään saada &#8211; paitsi 400 sivun päästä. Tällainen hömppä on eskapismia parhaimmillaan ja pahimmillaan &#8211; eihän elämä näin koskaan mene, mutta on se silti niin kirpeän viihdyttävää kuvitella, että <em>entäs jos menisikin</em>. Söpöä ja ihanaa, ja heti kun kannet sulkeutuvat, juoni unohtuu. Oman elämän pystyy ainakin vartin ajan näkemään hattaralasien läpi.</p>

<p>Voisin vielä sen mainita koko lajista, että kannattaa pysyä poissa syvistä vesistä, jos ei osaa uida.</p>
<p>En itse koe, että nämä kaksi maailmaa olisivat ristiriidassa keskenään, vaan koen pikemminkin, että elämästä saa eniten irti, kun pystyy hyväksymään asiat asioina ja jaksaa olla avoin ja utelias monenlaisia asioita ja ilmiöitä kohtaan. Voin päiväni kuluttaa Sinkkuelämää-maratonien ja rantakirjallisuuden parissa välillä naistenlehtiä selaillen ja kynsiä lakkaillen ja yöt pyhittää aivan toisenlaiselle kulttuurin saralle usein eri tavoin. Seison aidosti molempien kiinnostuksenkohteideni takana ja rakastan niiden loppumatonta suota ja siinä samoamista. </p>

And even if they did read it and get pissed off, they&#8217;d have to load their seventy children into a fucking wagon and take the back roads to get here, which would take like a thousand hours, especially with taking Sundays off and having to find places to park the horses for the night. (Good luck finding a gas station that still carries oats, man.) By the time they show up to beat my ass, they&#8217;d realize that they&#8217;re pacifists and go home. So, basically, no fear of retaliation whatsoever.</p>
<p>Plus, they&#8217;re assholes. Not because they shun modern conveniences in their homes, and not because they have a stringent interpretation of religious texts, and not because they have closets full of the same goddamned outfit like Pepper Ann. It&#8217;s because they&#8217;re smug. You heard me! I&#8217;ve lived near Amish and Mennonite families, hung out with their kids, and encountered them in professional settings, and I&#8217;m telling you, they have a stick planted so firmly in their asses, their grandkids are constipated.</p>
<p>For starters, they don&#8217;t use electricity or cars or buttons or pretty much anything invented after 1915. But some of them get around it by getting rides in cars (for which they are somehow not responsible), or having electronics that run on batteries (as if God said, &#8220;Thou shalt not have AC current or I&#8217;ll rippeth out thine arsehole, but DC is a&#8217;right.&#8221;). And even the staunch ones reap the benefits of modern technology. They shop in grocery stores that have freezers, buy products that have been shipped in trucks, and frequent banks that use computers. They don&#8217;t even sew their own clothes anymore. They just buy Hilfiger and cut the goddamned buttons off.</p>
<p>And all the while, they&#8217;re acting like they&#8217;re clean-living, simple folk who are somehow more righteous than the rest of us. &#8220;Oh, I don&#8217;t know how to work an English credit card&#8230; I&#8217;m Amish!&#8221; Get fucked. That card is of the devil&#8230; until you&#8217;re enjoying those frequent flier miles to Boca Raton so you can tan your ankles. You&#8217;re like a haggard 40-something porn bitch in frilly white socks. Nobody&#8217;s buying it, buddy.</p>
<p>And Amish cooking&#8230; has&#8230; to&#8230; end. This shit is ridiculous. Fried Tyson chicken and a can of corn are not ethnic foods. That hideous peanut-butter-and-marshmallow-creme shit isn&#8217;t even edible, let alone wholesome country fare, but you slap a Mennonite with a butter churn on the label and the mouth-breathers go wild. This makes the Amish twofold assholes for benefiting not only from our society&#8217;s ingenuity, but also from its idiocy.</p>
<p>But the most hypocritical thing about the Amish is that the adults prance around like they&#8217;ve always been 3-D versions of the characters in Pop-Up Bible. As if a few years ago, you weren&#8217;t having Rumspringa Break in Cancun, headbanging to Darkthrone and sucking ten cocks an hour. The baptismal font may wash away the honey-flavored glitter body paint, but you still fucked a rottweiler. So get off your high horse.</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">I think I&#8217;ve mentioned it before, but I like metal a lot.  It&#8217;s not my favorite sub-genre, but it occupies prolly 10% of my collection.  I like a lot of the metal sub-genres (black, death, doom, grindcore, thrash, gothic, viking, etc.)  but I have to draw the line at National Socialist Black Metal (NSBM, aka Nazi or white supremacist).  Which kind of seems ridiculous when you think about it.  Most <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_metal">black metal</a> is very extreme, anti-God, and pro-pagan/Satan and I can stomach that somehow.  Honestly, I don&#8217;t pay much attention to the lyrics and it seems like a lot of those bands are more about the spectacle and being provocative than actively plotting the downfall of Christianity.  Oddly enough, I do believe in God and consider myself to be a sort of Christian, but I am extremely open to many forms of spirituality and the occult.  So, I appreciate the different viewpoints and dark perspective you often find in metal&#8230;it&#8217;s the same reason I listen to Current 93, Death in June, and Coil.</p>
<p style="text-align:left;">So anyway, I like metal and have always been fascinated by its album cover art.  In the beginning, black metal albums were overly simple or just silly&#8230;</p>

I&#8217;ve selected a bunch of album covers that I think are compelling, for whatever reason.   A lot, but not all, of these are black metal bands and I grabbed most of the covers from the excellent <a href="http://blackmetalownsyou.blogspot.com/">Attila the Hun</a> blog.  I tried to do all of these at one time yesterday, but I chose so many that putting them all in the same post seems ridiculous at this point.  So, I&#8217;m going to break them up into a number of posts.  As I said, these aren&#8217;t all black metal bands or bands that I even like.   But I have included some bands I really like these days&#8230;Opeth, Deathspell Omega, Lurker of Chalice, Twilight, Xasthur, Leviathan, Wolves in the Throne Room, Darkthrone, Borknagar, Ulver, Striborg, The Meads of Asphodel, etc.  On to the album covers&#8230;</p>
