Multumita recomandarilor de pe last.fm, am descoperit o trupa bestiala de indistrial gothic/ darkwave. The Cruxshadows ii zice. In general, nu imi place sa ma uit la clipuri… nu am rabdare, plus ca de cele mai multe ori cand sunt in fata calculatorului am si altceva de facut in afara de a sta cu ochii in monitor.  Dar plictiseala din ora de info face minuni. Nemaiavand baterie la mp4, am facut si eu o vizita pe youtube, unde am descoperit clipul piesei Helen [ preferata mea de la formatia respectiva ], clip reprezentand un concert live. Am ramas impresionata. Vocalistul paraseste scena si se plimba prin public, printre fani. Mi-ar placea enorm sa fiu si eu acolo in sala… dar, avand in vedere ca nu am fost, imi permit sa copiez un reply al unei persoane care a avut aceasta sansa.

Die Form – Little Boy

Please tell me this doesn’t scare the freaking shit out of you. David Lynch just got thrown into a psychotic BDSM universe where people laugh like maniacs and devour your body parts while playing yoga synthesizers. Fuck.

Get ready for exposure, because this post will be massive. French Die Form formed in the late 70’s as a duo, playing cold, dark and dekadent electro-industrial music, sometimes called “darkwave”. Simply mesmerizing. The name of the project plays on the german “die Form” (the form), the english deform, and the french “difforme” (without form). Especially their early stuff sounds so insane and good, so I will keep it at that. Two more tracks from 1987 album Poupée Mécanique (of which the theme seems to be murder):

So how does Die Form usually sound like? The music constantly surprises. They throw all kinds of sounds into the jam: the usual industrial fascination with metal and tools, or even a groovy slap-bass (dwarfing contemporary french electro acts like Justice), or the weird intermezzo of a girl laughing with insanity, or instrumental re-runs of previous tracks (like the main leitmotif of a musical coming back to haunt you). Ever wondered how the soundtrack to a BDSM sex scene would sound like? I guess something like this:

The project seems like a labyrinth of strangeness and obscurity when first entering, and you listen through their huge discography with a feeling that every song or album contain so many hidden things, that you cannot (better not?) understand it all. For example, a reviewer said this about their album ExHuman: “Die Form send back out hybrid corpse mechanism era respiration-byte with the abolition world code-maniacs brain universe of a drug fetus”. What the fuck does he mean??? Even their fans seems to have some secret society where everybody speaks in impenetrable code.

Adding to the complexity of this project, they decided to record a whole album of …Bach. Yes, Johann Sebastian Bach, the 18th century German baroque composer. And of course in a cold, industrialized and synthetic interpretation of Bach’s classic works. Like this one.

Die Form practice “multimedia intervention” by the way, combining sounds with performances, clubbing atmosphere, photography, visual art and cinema/video. I guess you by now realize the erotic theme going through the music. So here’s Die Form when they perform.

Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows is a darkwave/neoclassical project of Anna-Varney Cantodea (from Germany). She, who was born a he, uses, along with her haunting music and personal lyrics, very strong and elusive images for this art project.

The song above is atken from the 2003 album Es reiten die Toten so schnell (or: the Vampyre sucking at his own Vein) which is probably my favorite, along with The Inverted Womb (2000).

I’ve wanted to go to Europe for a very long time. I find myself becoming extremely jealous when I hear other people’s tales of backpacking and European adventures. Oz and I often discuss going to Scotland so he can visit his home country — his mother’s maiden name is Dewar, as in Dewar’s scotch whiskey.

It was a strange morning, yet kind of normal for us. We listened to Darkwave, VNV Nation, and Johnny Vicious house mixes while I made breakfast. Then, Oz brought up Wave Gotik Treffen, the world’s largest festival for “dark culture,” which takes place in Leipzig, Germany every May 21-24.

Upon first glance, it looks like a Hot Topic festival.

But this is the real deal, folks.

At Wave Gotik Treffen, there are a variety of people. From Victorian Goths to gutter punks, to steampunks, there’s a little something for everyone. But it’s not just about the clothes and make-up, it’s about the music. WGT offers more than 150 bands and artists from various backgrounds  such as Gothic rock, EBM, Industrial, Noise, Darkwave, Neofolk, Neoclassical, Medieval Music, Experimental, Gothic metal, Deathrock and Punk.

Oz and I are both kind of scared of the festival, but we’re also very intrigued. I’d love to go experience something completely different like that, if only for the fact that I could blog about it after. Plus, Oz looks great in eyeliner.

Em 2006 tive a oportunidade de participar da gravação do primeiro cd da banda Days Are Nights, Sounds Of The End lançado pela 80´s Records. “Lord… My Soul Sings!”

Anna-Varney Cantodea é vocalista e compositor da banda alemã Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows, que se iniciou em 1987, numa casa noturna de Frankfurt, Negativ, quando Varney chamou a atenção de duas pessoas quanto sua crítica sobre a banda que se apresentava. Um dos interessados, Holger, esteve envolvido no projeto por dois anos.

A banda iniciou-se com uma demo-tape chamada "Es Reiten Die Toten So Schnell", que seria a primeira de uma triologia nunca finalizada. A partir daí, mais de dez álbuns foram lançados, além de um projeto em conjunto com Constance Fröhling, chamado "Nenia C’alladhan" (2002).
O verdadeiro nome de Anna-Varney, que prefere ser tratado no feminino, apesar de já ter revelado ter nascido do sexo masculino na revista ‘Witchcraft’, é um segredo. O nome artístico consiste em Anna, apenas como nome, Varney, nome do vampiro protagonista do folhetim Varney the Vampire, or the Feast of Blood (James Malcom Rymer, 1847) e Cantodea, que é um vernáculo feminino em latim para som, cantora ou canção. Esse seu anonimato abrange à recusa de se apresentar no palco durante shows e à escassez de informações sobre a artista, o que faz os dados beirarem da verdade ao boato, como histórias sobre sua infância e a agressão dos pais que sofria.
Anna-Varney é tida como o único membro da banda Sopor Aeternus, por conta do desconhecimento da composição de "The Ensemble of Shadows". Cantodea diz que eles são espíritos que a ajudam a compôr as músicas, tais quais as Musas, da mitologia grega, que inspiravam os músicos e poetas.

The Ensemble of Shadows surgira quando Varney estava à beira do sucídio, aos 20 anos. A depressão, que adquirira aos seis anos, estava em seu ápice, fazendo Cantodea não sair mais ao sol e assim, adoecer. Para fugir da dor, a artista dormia e, em seus sonhos, ouvia as melodias de ‘Ensemble of Shadows’, que eram músicas suas para si mesma. Varney afirma que trabalhar com Sopor Aeternus é uma forma de lidar com seus conflitos, procurando elevar-se espiritualmente.
A dúvida sobre a sexualidade de Anna-Varney é comum quando se vê fotos da cantora, que comumente aparece nua. Cantodea não fez nenhuma cirurgia de mudança de sexo, diz que prefere ter as genitais trabalhadas no computador, daí tendo a versatilidade de as fazer feminina ou apenas desfazê-las. Varney diz que isto está associado a conflitos espirituais. A compositora aborda principalmente esse assunto em suas canções, sendo mais notável nos álbuns "The Inexperienced Spiral Traveller” e "Voyager – Jugglers of Jusa".

Não obstante, a vocalista tem a capacidade de entonar sua voz como feminina ou masculina.
Anna-Varney influencia suas músicas no planeta Saturno, nomeando essa tendência astral como "Saturnian Path". É possível remeter à mitologia grega, em que Saturno equivale a Chronos, que por sua vez, tem a etimologia de seu nome obscura, surgindo assim a ligação com "cornos", que rege o demônio indiano Kroni ou a divindade levantina El. O próprio símbolo da banda é o símbolo astronômico de Saturno () sobreposto pelo símbolo de Júpiter (), fazendo-se assim a analogia mitológica entre os planetas, em relação à paternidade de Saturno quanto Júpiter.

A música de Anne-Varney Cantodea tem toques de medievalismo, é emocional, melancólica e é composta por instrumentos como violinos, sinos, flautas, órgão, guitarra, além de arranjos de teclado. Apesar da temática sobre a sexualidade ser mais evidente, além do obscurantismo, as músicas também tratam sobre suicídio, amor não correspondido, dor, morte, solidão, tristeza, astrologia, sonhos e figuras mitológicas. Um bom exemplo inaugural seria a música The Conqueror Worm, que tem como letra o poema de Edgar Allan Poe, em que são tratados temas como a mortalidade do homem e sua inevitabilidade.

Anna-Varney participou, em 1995, da compilação "Jekura – Deep the Eternal Forest" com quatro músicas: duas canções de "White Onyx Elephant", seu projeto instrumental paralelo ao Sopor, e dois covers do Black Sabbath, "Paranoid" e " A National Acrobat", publicados com acentuação estranha e os nomes invertidos. Atualmente Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble of Shadows possui 16 álbuns.

Como siempre, navegando y navegando, tratando de encontrar algún material interesante, en esta ocasión nos adentramos en un estilo realmente gótico. He de decir que personalmente de esta banda no conocía, no así el estilo que sí me recuerda a Lacrimosa o Diorama. La banda se llama: Bacio Di Tosca, se puede encasillar en un estilo gothic/Neo Classical/Darkwave. Esta banda alemana nutre su estilo de diferentes influencias.
