The second day in Sydney, we checked out of our hotel but left our luggage stored there because that was the night we were staying at the zoo.  That gave us from ten in the morning until seven to keep busy.  We ended up walking a very few blocks from our hotel to Darling Harbour.  Darling Harbour is home to the Australian National Maritime Museum, the Sydney Aquarium, Harbourside Shopping Center, the Star Casino, and a plethora of entertainment opportunities.  After walking around a bit, we hopped on a double decker bus for a Sydney tour.  It was one of those deals where you pay one price and you can hop on and off at any time.  We were on the top deck which was wonderful for getting an unobstructed view of Sydney, however, it was bad for getting off!  Several times we tried to get down to the first floor to get off of the bus at a stop (you aren’t supposed to be standing or walking while it is in motion) but we wouldn’t make it to the stairs, let alone down the stairs, before the bus started moving and we’d have to get to our seats!  Not good.

Finally, we got off at the Sydney Opera House.  There were lots of people getting off and more getting on so we made it off in time!  Whew!  From the Opera House we walked to Sydney Harbour where we got some lunch and did some shopping before getting on the ferry that took us across the harbour to the Taronga Zoo.

Come weekends, the Sydney markets are alive and bustling with shoppers hunting for souvenirs, antiques, crafts and jewellery as well as clothes, books, footwear and whatnot!

The markets of the Rocks, Surry Hills, Rozelle, Bondi, Paddington, Glebe and Balmain are vibrant with its vast array of wares that include the special and the funky, the quirky and the odd, the casual and the ceremonial, the conventional and the bizarre…You name it, Sydney has it!

Recycled and handmade goods are the specialty of Surry Hills and Rozelle Markets. There are priceless varieties of these goods to choose from. Some of these stalls offer second-hand but exclusive stuff at steal-away prices!

Shoppers are constantly baffled by the dilemma of choosing between designs of the morrow and the reigning labels of today!

The delightful ethnic collections at the night markets of Chinatown have been a constant source of attraction for visitors.

In fact these markets are a fair reflection of the attitude, lifestyle, culture, and aesthetics of the people of Sydney!

Como contei bem rapidinho por aqui anteriormente, final de semana passado eu fui pra Sydney, conhecer a cidade que estava no meu caderno de sonhos desde que eu era mais nova.

Valeu a pena: mesmo acordando às quatro da madrugada em pleno domingo pra pegar o vôo, mesmo desbravando a cidade debaixo de chuva, mesmo ficando de TPM em plena viagem… Ah, como valeu a pena! Visitar o Opera House? Conhecer a Hillsong? Ir na gravação do CD novo deles? Subir num farol de verdade e ver a Darling Harbour inteira? Andar de monotrilho? Ver uma árvore de Natal quilométrica coberta de cristais Swarovski no shopping mais lindo do mundo? Visitar um aquário onde você anda debaixo do mar? Com uma amiga brasileira que  mora lá e nos serviu de guia, ainda por cima? Ah, deixe-me dizer: tudo isso não tem preço. Tanto é que num post só não daria nem pra sequer começar a contar tudo o que foram aqueles dois dias. 800 fotos (e não, eu não estou exagerando), muitas filmagens e diversos momentos inesquecíveis depois, cheguei à conclusão, no avião mesmo, de que teria que escrever uma série de posts sobre Sydney pra vocês.

Então é isso: não deixem de conferir uma semana inteirinha de textos sobre aquela cidade encantadora que todo mundo deveria ter o privilégio de visitar pelo menos uma vez na vida! Vou escrever sobre os meus cantinhos preferidos, sobre a gravação da Hillsong, umas reflexões que me ocorreram naqueles dias e muito mais. Espero mesmo que vocês gostem e se sintam encorajados a se planejarem pra vir pra cá!

Darling Harbour in Sydney is beautiful at this time of year anyway, so grab some mates and plan a fun day out.

Just think, this could be the first step to your big adventure!

Here is my choice for this week’s Scenic Sunday – a photo from the Chinese Garden of Friendship, Darling Harbour, Sydney, Australia.

Notre voyage se termine demain déjà (je sais, nous n’avons pas tous la même notion du “déjà” selon qu’on se trouve ici en Australie ou en Suisse…) et à travers ce court billet, voici quelques mots sur la ville de Sydney.

Plus grande que Melbourne, cette métropole de 4 millions d’habitants nous a beaucoup plu étant donné l’importance de l’eau dans et autour de la ville. En effet, la ville s’est déployée autour des bras de la baie et se déplacer en ferry donne une idée de la façon dont la ville se marie avec la mer.

Nous prenons d’ailleurs le ferry pour nous rendre à Manly, une des nombreuses plages de la côte de Sydney et la perspective sur le centre-ville lorsque l’on arrive de Darling Harbour est magnifique. Nous pouvons ainsi y photographier le deuxième emblème de l’Australie après Ayers Rock, c’est l’opéra de Sydney!

Lorsque nous arrivons à Manly, le ciel s’ouvre et le soleil devient intense… l’ambiance est parfaite pour marcher un peu le long de la plage et observer les nombreuses vitrines de surf shops…

Retour vers Circular Quay puis Darling Harbour pour se préparer à monter sur la tour de Sydney. La Sydney Tower culmine à plus de 300 m et nous permet d’admirer le coucher de soleil sur la ville… un grand moment durant lequel le soleil joue avec les nuages dans un festival de couleurs jaunes et oranges. Nous terminons par un repas dans le restaurant tournant de la tour (leur Kuglos australien … avant de redescendre sur terre….

C’est une belle manière de mettre un point final à notre aventure australienne !

It’s day 16 but I thought it was Day 15. I just found out that I have been counting from the wrong day. The calculation is supposed to be made from the first day of infusion NOT the last day which is what I have been doing.

Regardless my platelets are 36 today (Day 15 or 16). Never been that high before at this stage – in fact I’ve not made it to day 15 or 16 without an infusion. So that’s good.

I now go back to HACU again on wednesday and am also booked for thursday. I suspect I’ll be getting an infusion of Octagam by then.

So we are remaining optimistic and hopeful that my platelets stay up instead of continuing to trend down.

I might be having a bone marrow biopsy to rule out anything else sinister like lymphoma. But they said that would be very unlikely as all my other test results are clear. I’m not keen on a bone marrow biopsy as I had one when I was seven and they were trying to diagnose what ended up being Juvenile onset polyarticular rheumatoid arthritis. I still remember the room I was in and how much it hurt.

Other treatments include spleen removal and also some other drugs which increase my risk of getting a clot.

But like I said I am remaining optimistic and hopeful that the treatments I am having and have had will kick in. A cure is imminent. I am sure of it. The planets are aligning and great times are ahead for Virgos!!

Also I have noticed that in the last couple of weeks I haven’t been having the discomfort in my gut that I have had for years, so my helicobacter pylori must certainly be gone.

The staff at HACU were getting into their dragon boat yesterday (in the pouring rain) when lightning started to flash across the sky and the event was called off. Very disappointing for them. Apparently Maritime Services charges $60,000 to hire the area to hold this charity event so it won’t be rescheduled. If that’s true that they do charge, I as a tax payer am appalled!!! It should be free for charities.

That’s all for now. Today I am going to do a subject for my real estate licence.

Well, two stabs and they got blood.

My results came back at 56 which is ONLY 6 less than yesterday AND the highest I have been twelve days post infusion.

So that’s a positive. Maybe the Dapsone, or the Mabthera (Rituximab) is working.

I go back to HACU again on Monday….and Tuesday…

But am going to try to get to Cockle Bay / Darling Harbour on Sunday to watch the staff who look after me at HACU compete in the Dragon Boat Racing for Breast Cancer.

Waking up in our new home in Pyrmont is wonderful.  Its so great to be able to roll out of bed and go to the kitchen to make breakfast with no one else around. Also, really appreciate showering without flip flops! We spend our first morning getting things set up, and doing groceries now that we have a proper fridge and cupboard space to put things.

We spend the afternoon walking around Darling Harbour and enjoying the sites.  The place is beautiful – it is surrounded by two levels of nice restaurants and shops.  There is also the world’s largest IMAX, the convention centre, Sky Casino and lots of open park space.  I would definitely recommend living near Darling Harbour – there is lots to see and do and it is the heart of all the action.  There are boat races on the water and festivals in the park.

Andrew goes out in the late afternoon to drop off some resumes at a few of the restaurants on the water, and comes back with two trials, both for Saturday night at Nick’s Seafood Restaurant and one at Blackbird Cafe.   Andrew, decides not to do the trial at Blackbird, since Nick’s is a much higher end restaurant and the money is better.  No surprise, he gets offered the job and will be starting next week. Off to a good start!

Já faz um pouco mais de um mês que não passo por aqui!
Justifico: estive um pouco doente e, na sequência, muito trabalho para fazer.
Mas agora que as coisas estão mais tranquilas, aproveitei para revisar o texto redigido já há várias semanas e postá-lo.
Nada de especial: apenas a sequência do “diário de bordo”  iniciado em Brisbane, na viagem à Austrália feita no final de Agosto passado.
Segue aqui a minha percepção de Sydney, cidade pela qual continuo apaixonado!

Dia 28: Sydney!

Sydney é uma cidade linda! Energética, adorável, orientalizada. Porta para entrada na Austrália para a maior parte dos turistas.
Fácil de entender o porque: ruas seguras e limpas, inúmeros restaurantes para todos os bolsos e gostos, clima agradável, com inúmeras atividades. É impossível não encontrar alguma coisa que realmente te agrade neste lugar!
E pra quem gosta de praias, Sydney tem cerca de 70. Bondi é, provavelmente, a mais famosa.
A maior parte dos vôos internacionais chegam pela manhã.
4 milhões de pessoas vivem nesta cidade imponente. Isso representa cerca de 15 por cento de toda a população do país.
Como eu disse, há muita coisa para se ver e para se fazer e é possível passear por todo o centro praticamente a pé.
Neste primeiro dia, fui ao Jardim Botânico (Royal Botanic Garden). Dá pra se passar horas e horas por ali, curtindo a paisagem, vendo a variedade de plantas e de pessoas! Sim! Há pessoas de todos os lugares e de todos os tipos.
Nas árvores, morcegos gigantescos. Lembram os dos filmes do Batman.
Logo ali, mais à frente, entre os prédios que se misturam com as árvores e gramados, se percebe a “Sydney Opera House” e, ao fundo, a “Harbour Bridge”, imponente. Ambas, cartões postais da cidade.
É possível escalar a  ponte. Basta desembolsar 120 doletas para tal.
Preferi bater uma foto de baixo mesmo. Até porque, tenho apenas 3 dias por aqui e muita coisa para se ver.
Vários espetáculos estavam em cartaz na Sydney Opera House. Os preços variavam entre 70 e 130 dólares australianos.
Aqui, uma dica: para quem optar pelo “Tour” para conhecer a “Opera House” por dentro, há um desconto considerável no valor dos ingressos para os concertos e peças. Vale a pena!
Infelizmente, a peça que eu queria assistir já tinha os ingressos esgotados para a noite de hoje. E, amanhã , domingo, será tempo para conhecer a Hillsong! Ademais, é certo que esta não será a última vez nesta cidade tão bacana.
Depois de tirar várias fotos da Sydney Opera House, da Harbour Bridge e do que havia por perto, encontrei um Chinês que estava a viajar só e que me pediu para tirar-lhe umas fotografias. Acabamos por fazer o mesmo percurso a partir de então, nos dirigindo ao Darling Harbour, primeiro pela George’s Street. No caminho entre a Ópera e o Darling Harbour, o ‘chinoca’ me disse que estava em trânsito por Sydney e que na manhã seguinte iria pegar o vôo de volta para Pequim. Morou um ano em Melbourne, onde fez um curso de aperfeiçoamento para pilotos. Sim,  vai ser piloto da China Airways.
Seu inglês não é dos melhores, o que me chamou a atenção a ponto de perguntar-lhe se ele fez o curso em mandarim ou cantonês, ao que ele me respondeu: “- em inglês, claro George!”
Depois dessa, acho que considerarei melhor as companhias aéreas pelas quais viajo por aqui e acolá…  (risos)
Pois então: Darling Harbour é um ótimo lugar para se passar o fim de tarde ou o começo da noite.
Aliás, o entardecer por aqui é inesquecível. Por causa da poeira no ar, o sol, ao se pôr, faz com que o céu tenha diferentes tonalidades de cores a cada segundo. Um espetáculo.
Há vários museus, centros de entretenimento e muitos, muitos restaurantes ao redor.
No meio do mar, próximo à ponte (Pyrmont Bridge), um palco flutuante. Pensei logo: deve ser legal tocar ali! UNITED que o diga! =)
No fim da noite fui para o cinema. IMAX, o maior do mundo, bem ali, ao meu lado.
Não resisti: – fui assitir a um filme em 3D.
Não riam. Mas a melhor opção que tive foi, mesmo, “Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince”!
Ao final, e cansado de tanto caminhar, voltei para o albergue. Fica próximo à estação central, há uns 15 minutos, à pé, da Darling Harbour.
É isso. Excelente para o primeiro dia. Hora de descansar porque amanhã haverá muito mais para se fazer.

Dia: 29: Apesar da alergia…

Acordei um pouco mais tarde e com uma alergia terrível.
Praticamente nem tomei café, a não ser um razoável chocolate quente da máquina que havia ali, no albergue mesmo.
Caminhei pela George Street. Uma overdose de Shoppings.
Almocei num restaurante italiano. Há várias opções de restaurantes pelo centro, para todos os gostos e todos os preços. E tem o Hungry Jack, na minha opinião, melhor do que o MacDonald’s.
Pelas 16:00 h., já estava eu na estação central a esperar o trem para Parammatta. O destino daquela tarde era o culto de sábado na Hillsong.
Chegando na estação de Parammatta, lá estava eu a procurar a tal chocolataria que o anúncio no website da Hillsong mencionava: o ônibus que gratuitamente levava membros da igreja e visitantes  aos cultos parava logo à frente desta chocolateria.
Repentinamente, uma senhora, ao me ver com um papel em uma das mãos (no qual eu tinha anotado as direções para a igreja!) e na outra um copo com chocolate quente, me disse: “- Você vai pra Hillsong! Pode vir pra cá que o ônibus já está chegando!” Foi quando lhe perguntei: “- E como sabes?” E ela afirmou: “- Visitantes que vão à primeira vez à nossa igreja sempre agem assim: um papel com endereço e um copo de chocolate a olhar para o relógio!” (risos). A senhora me conquistou pela espontaneidade e logo um outro brasileiro e um alemão que por ali estavam se aproximaram. Também estavam meio que perdidos, à espera do ônibus. E no horário preciso, lá estava ele. São quase 30 minutos da estação de Parammatta até o templo em Castle Hills.
Na viagem, conheci o Samuel, que tinha acabado de chegar do Brasil para uma temporada na Austrália. Engenheiro, veio estudar inglês.  Cara legal, músico, cheio de sonhos.
E entre conversas, a chegada na igreja.
A organização me surpreendeu, me encantou.
Logo na entrada, uma recepção fantástica.
O culto usa e abusa de recursos mutimídia.
São apenas 4 canções e então a pregação da palavra.
Ouvir o louvor foi como ouvir um CD do grupo: a qualidade é a mesma.
“Look to You” foi a primeira música que ouvi. Eu, claro, só agradecia em pensamento a oportunidade de ali estar.
A pregação é o forte. Quase uma hora que nem se vê passar.
Na saída, direito a falar com o Niguel, um dos guitarristas principais da “Hillsong Worship Team”. Fotografia também.
E enquanto esperávamos pelo ônibus, para  a volta a Parammatta, um lanche gratuíto oferecido pela igreja.
Tudo perfeito.
No retorno para o centro de Sydney, parada novamente em Darling Harbour.  Samuel estava a viver ali perto. Aproveitamos pra conversar um pouco mais. É sempre bom encontrar pessoas que compartilham da mesma fé, com idealismos em comum.

E assim foi a noite de sábado.

Dia 30: My Spring!

Dormi tarde e acordei cedo.
Tive uma dor de cabeça terrível. A última, que me lembro, asism, foi há mais de um ano atrás, em Baucau.
Nenhum medicamento para tomar.
Me restou fazer compressas frias e massagens, orando para que aquela sensação passasse.
Acordei cedo. Me arrumei e fui para a estação central.
Era domingo e eu não queria perder um dos culto da manhã.
Encontrei o Samuel ainda na estação. Após fazermos o mesmo roteio, chegamos à igreja. Hoje, o culto seria no centro de convenções, o salão principal, onde é gravado muitos dos CD’s e DVD’s das bandas (Hillsong Worship e Hillsong United).
Na chegada, algo que me chamou a  atenção: alguns dos diáconos que nos atendeu no culto de sábado nos reconheceu e nos chamou pelo nome. Isso é que é eficiência, princiupalmente quando consideramos que a igreja recebe entre 4 e 5 mil pessoas por culto…
Um dos pastores que estava na entrada da igreja, no saguão de encontros, me disse que havia chegado há pouco do Brasil. Particularmente, de Fortaleza. Perguntei-lhe se havia ido em férias, ao que me respondeu: “- Não! Estamos iniciando um trabalho lá!”.

Maravilha!

Bem, hora de entrarmos no templo.
O louvor começou com “Time has come”, sem aquela introdução de guitarras, mas logo na sequência de um vídeo fantástico.
Darlene foi quem conduziu o louvor.
Como no culto de sábado, apenas 4 canções foram entoadas e então a pregação. Mais uma vez, o tempo passou e eu nem percebi.
Voltei para o Centro de Sydney.
Almoçei com o Samuel e depois fui para a “Queen’s Victoria Building”, um shopping famoso localizado no Centro.
Depois, voltei para o albergue e descansei um pouco.
Às 16:00h., lá estava eu fazendo o mesmo percurso para Castle Hills.
Era dia de “Sunday Night Live”!
Sem palavras!
E assim foi o meu domingo.

Dia 31: Despedida!

Levantei-me cedo e fiz o “check out”. Meu último dia em Sydney e tinha que aproveitar bem.
Dirigi-me ao ‘pier’ e, de barco, fui conhecer Manly.
Lugar bonito, aconchegante.
A vista, até lá, era de impressionar.
Almocei no centro de Manly. Visitei a praia, bem famosa por aqui.
Retorno para o Centro de Sydney.
Hora de comprar algumas lembrancinhas.
Por último, fui conhecer o templo da Hillsong no centro de Sydney.
Não é tão imponente quanto a localizada em Castle Hills, mas também pareceu-me ser bem legal. Tinha um pessoal ensaiando e, claro, muitos jovens pelos átrios da igreja. Provavelmente, alunos da Hillsong College.
Hora de ir pro aeroporto.
Voo pra Darwin com escala em Brisbane, pela Virgin Blue Pacific. Saída às 18:30 e chegada em Darwin pelas 1:00 da manhã.
Dormi ali mesmo, no aeroporto. Logo às 7.00, check in e a sensação de se estar regressando à matrix. Era isso mesmo! Já era 1 de Setembro e lá estava eu, voltando para mais um tempo de Timor. Por sorte eu adoro essa ilha! E por sorte, voltarei à Austrália em breve…

Finally some sun… so much sun that we didn’t take an umbrella (“brolley” here) out with us. Mum needed a bit of a rest from all the walking around, so she stayed behind as Jen and I had a busy day out and about.

We started at the Sydney Fish Market in the morning… oh sooooo cool! The Sydney Fish Market is on the other side of the Sydney Harbor and quite a large facility of independent fish mongers and food stalls galore — as I understand it, the largest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere. So Jenny and I were off in the mid-morning. The Fish Market was pretty quiet, but it was Wednesday, so expected. The market is home to fish mongers that provide raw and cooked food. They have the raw in one area, much like a regular fish counter at a market, and another smaller part holds the cooked fish area where you can buy cooked fish and seafood and enjoy it at their seating area.

Jenny and I stopped by one of the larger fish mongers for a mooch around. The place is pretty darn big and has all the regular fish and seafood including shrimp of various sizes, tuna, swordfish, crab legs, salmon and the largest lobsters I’ve ever seen in my life. But one that will stay in my mind on this journey was the Moreton Bay Bug. The “bug” looks like a critter that is the size of a small lobster’s body, is ugly like a wood lice (really, oh really) and tastes a cross between a lobster and a crab (yes folks, I tasted it). It is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, but I promised myself that I would be open to new adventures and try new things… and well, I’ve definitely stepped up to the plate on this one! A suggestion if you ever have the opportunity to try one is to just eat it and not look at it!

Having fufilled my “trying new things” requirement (eat your heart out Anthony Bourdain!), we moved on to octopus. We had a (cooked) spicy baby octupus with spring onion dish — it needed a little rice to ward off the spicyness… but it was pretty darn good once you got all the legs in your mouth We couldn’t eat the whole dish between us, so we took it “to go”, but honestly it ended up in the garbage bin on the way out the door to the car as we were afraid that it would stink up the car!

But before we left we had a look around the gourmet grocery and the kitchen supply place that was onsite. Australian’s (apparently) like their mayonaisse sweet… sweet like Miracle Whip at home. Yes, the gross stuff. Not the lovely tast of Helmann’s mayo. Jenny has bought so many jars of mayo just to find that each one is sweet and oh so gross… so much money down the drain… but that is part of the experience of living in a different land. So when Jenny and I came across a $8 jar of mayo that looked promising, we took a chance. Later when we got home we had a blind taste test and fortunately it didn’t turn out to be that bad!

So onward and upward… we left the Fish Market and headed a short distance to the Darling Harbour (proper english spelling for harbor) area for a look around. The Darling Harbour was developed in part for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The harbor is the next one down from the Sydney Quay (pronounced “key”) which is the main entry point to Sydney for the ferries. The area lends itself to a great place to hang out on the evenings and weekends. Per Jenny it is definitely a meet-and-greet area. The area is lovely as the harbor is a combination of the Maritime Museum, The IMAX theatre, private yachts (and I mean some of the coolest yachts), and promenades where people just hang out.

After a shared bite to eat at one of the waterside establishments, we walked around the area and came across a street performer — actually a female contortionist doing an act where she got herself into a box 16″x16″. No kidding… we saw it all and it was quite freaky… not just because of the act, but because she was a very normal looking female (mid-20s we suspected) that was out there earning a dime. She was very professional and did a great job. It is also pretty lucrative, as we think she clears several (and I mean) several hundred dollars after each act with everyone watching her. Granted, this is not a long term career for her (or anyone), but she “worked it” very well and earned every penny for what it is worth.

So onward and upward, after a bit further of a mooch we got back into the car and headed off on errands. We went to Dan Murphy’s which is a chain of adult beverage stores… just like England, you cannot buy alcohol in a grocery store and have to go to a special establishment. Dan Murphy’s is very cool and they even have their own wine bags that hold multiple bottles… kind of like the Whole Foods bags… nice little souvineers for friends to take home with me and they pack oh so well!

After Dan Murphy’s we went on an errand for my mother to bulk up her wardrobe… when packing at home she focused more on the Spring here and less on the fact that they are coming out of Winter. She woefully underpacked, so I found her a great fleece jacket which she hasn’t taken off since I gave it to her last night! Oh the benefits of the Southern Hemisphere as they are coming out of Winter and everything is on sale as we approach it!

Start of the school holidays. Again, I hear people cry out! We had the chance to spend the day with friends out in the city. Andrew and Hannah + 3 other children made an interesting day. We spent most of the time in Darling Harbour and me taking photos of the kids. A quick stop at Myer saw us look at Christmas decorations in the store and it is just the start of October. We were invited to dinner at their house in the evening. The children all had a great time and at times it was like being at school running a class. I was amazed in the way that the kids interacted with one another, they interacted without much thought and they just wanted to be kids having fun. The freedom that they showed was awesome and to be enjoyed. Here is the photo gallery.

Had a double-date (trite, but what else can I call it, huh?!) with Ray’s best buddy and his awfully sweet and pretty girlfriend, Jase and Cara. The 2 of them are insanely cute, of course Cara much more than Jase. (And hey, it has nothing to do with him laughing like a jackass when Ray told him I had diarrhoea. How evil is that?! Sobs. )

We had the Sushi Buffet at Kobe Jones, which according to the website, “combines modern Japanese cuisine with a Californian twist, attentive service, stylish interiors and stunning Darling Harbour views”. It’s pretty costly if you order a la carte (which theboy brought me for our first date, haha) but the lunch buffet is only AUD$25. Pretty value for money. They serve you a plate of different sushis (urm.. is there a plural for sushi?!) with their special Volcano, a mishmash of their special cream sauce and mostly seafood. Honestly, it’s kinda hard to tell what’s under. If you wanna know though, this is their lunch buffet menu.

Die mutigste Wassernixe der Welt. - Keine Narbe wird sie je entstellen!

Der Himmel verdunkelt sich über Sydney. Es ist sechs Uhr, die Abendsonne ist hinter dicken, dunklen Gewitterwolken untergegangen. Im Radio warnen die Moderatoren vor Sturm und starkem Wind. Es ist heiß. Schwül. 32 Grad. Der Asphalt, der sich in der prallen Sonne den ganzen Tag über aufgeheizt hat, kann kaum abkühlen. Hektisch rollen Räder über ihm her, Menschen trampeln auf ihm herum als sie die Straße überqueren. Plötzlich helles Licht überall. Ein Blitz. Ein Donner. Knall. Bumm. Die Menschen werden hektischer, gehen schneller über die Straße, warten nicht mehr auf grün. Ein Auto hupt. Noch eins. Knall. Bumm. Ein Donner lässt die Dame mit dem blauen Rock und den Stöckelschuhen zusammenzucken. Auf einmal fasst der Mann, der ihr entgegenläuft an sein Ohr. Es ist nass. Ein Regentropfen hat ihn getroffen. Der erste an diesem Abend. Plötzlich prasseln abertausende von Regentropfen auf die Menschen, die Autos, den warmen Asphalt. Überall in den Straßen hört man aufklappende Regenschirme, die Menschen verziehen ihr Gesicht. Ein Taxi ist jetzt schwer zu bekommen, jeder will schließlich trocken bleiben. Die Menschen suchen Schlupf unter den Vordächern der Geschäfte. Die Regentropfen platschen auf den Boden und spritzen bis zu ihren Füßen. Alle sind genervt. Nur einer lacht. Er geht zu seinem Fahrrad, schließt es auf und radelt los.

Surfen kann so gefährlich sein. Ich muss diesen Eintrag damit beginnen. Auch wenn es chronologisch keinen Sinn macht: Heute haben mich die Sonnenstrahlen bei 26 Grad aus dem Bett gekitzelt und relativ spontan haben Dominica, Laura, Carles und ich beschlossen, nach Bondi zu fahren. Weil Dominica surfen lernen wollte, hat Carles sein Bord mitgenommen und sie hat sich eines ausgeliehen. Die beiden waren im Wasser und Laura und ich haben uns nett unterhalten, bis ich ein bisschen den Strand rauf und runter joggen wollte. Ich laufe seelenruhig am Strand entlang, manchmal sind die Wellen stark genug und kitzeln an meinen Füßen, die Sonne versteckt sich etwas hinter Wolken. Total in Gedanken, sehe ich auf einmal die Rettungsschwimmer mit einem Mädchen, das mit blutüberströmtem Gesicht auf dem Boden sitzt. Ich denke noch so beim Vorbeilaufen „Mensch! Das ist aber lieb von Carles, dass er sich um das Mädchen kümm-“ da wird mir plötzlich bewusst: Scheiße: Carles! Dominica. Das Mädchen mit dem blutverschmierten Gesicht ist Dominica… Verdammt! Glück im Unglück muss man es wohl nennen, dass im Wasser nicht mehr passiert ist. Sie hat gerade ihre erste große Welle nehmen wollen, da muss sie ein anderer Surfer mit dem Board ziemlich hart getroffen haben. Sie hatte eine offene Platzwunde und musste mit sechs (!) Stichen genäht werden. Dabei hatte sie wirklich Glück, denn die Wunde war direkt neben der Nase über dem Auge. Gerade noch einmal gut gegangen. Und so war der Strand-Tag bereits um 1 Uhr mittags vorbei… Aber: Der wohl tapfersten Wassernixe Australiens geht es wieder gut. Nachdem sie bei sich zuhause gechillt hat, ist sie zum Abendessen vorbeigekommen. Ich habe sie lecker bekocht, es gab einen tollen Nachtisch und sie fühlt sich gut… Geht doch!

Mega Sturm und starker Regen

Es mag pervers klingen: Aber irgendwie habe ich mich heute total auf den Regen gefreut. Nachdem ich von Dominica nach Hause gekommen bin, habe ich mich auf mein Fahrrad geschwungen und bin ins Fitnessstudio gedüst. Schon auf dem Hinweg haben sich krasse Wolken gebildet und irgendwie habe ich gehofft, das Gewitter nicht zu verpassen. Nach dem Training habe ich schnell meine Sachen gepackt – Duschen wollte ich zuhause weil ich auf dem Fahrrad sowieso wieder schwitzen würde – und bin raus, genau richtig. Just in dem Moment da ich draußen bin, fängt es krass an zu regnen. Warmer „Sommerregen“, der auf meine Haut geprasselt ist. Herrlich. Ich habe mich mit einem Lachen auf dem Gesicht auf mein Fahrrad gesetzt und bin in extrem strömendem Regen nach Hause. Ohne Schutzblech. Kleine Sturzbäche bildeten sich an den Straßenrändern und die Räder der vorbeifahrenden Autos haben mir das Wasser bis ins Gesicht gewirbelt. Die Leute, an denen ich vorbei gedüst bin, müssen gedacht haben, dass ich auf Drogen bin. Klitschnass kam ich zuhause an, meine Schuhe konnte ich auswringen.

Zwei Wochen Wochenende

Endlich. Ferien. Auch wenn ich den ganzen Montag über 13 Stunden lang in der Uni verbracht habe und auch am Wochenende andauernd Unikram gemacht habe, sind nun auch für mich endlich Ferien und eigentlich muss ich erst wieder in zwei Wochen die Bank drücken. Trotzdem habe ich einige Projekte für die Uni am Laufen, die ich weiter verfolgen muss. Und auch in Deutschland muss noch eine Uni-Arbeit abgegeben werden. Hach, egal. Wird schon. Irgendwie werden die zwei kommenden Wochen wie Wochenende. Ich habe es mir verdient. Übrigens fahren voll viele von den internationalen Studenten in den Urlaub, reisen die Küste hoch, sind in Neuseeland (Therese nämlich), fliegen nach Darwin (Anne beispielsweise) oder machen einen Trip nach Uluru (Emma). Und ich? Vielleicht düse ich nach Melbourne, um Freunde zu besuchen? Das ist noch nicht ganz klar. Aber das Beste ist, dass ich am Montag nicht nur meine Radiostory fertig bekommen habe: Unser Lehrer hat mich zum Moderator unserer Dummy-Sendung auserkoren. Sicherlich so ein bisschen willkürlich, oder wie er es nannte: „Dann hast du was, worüber du dir Sorgen machen kannst!“. Ich fands natürlich super und habe sogar einen recht guten Job gemacht, wie alle anderen meinten. Wer mal rein hören will…

Ein kurzes Liebes-Techtelmechtel

Ich war verliebt. Nein, ich bin verliebt. Ach, doof, denn es wird nichts mit uns beiden. Ich hatte ja geschrieben, dass ich mich mit meiner Liebe getroffen habe? Nun, ich habe lange überlegt, aber es würde einfach viel zu teuer werden… Also habe ich Dave, der Typ dem der Van gehört, eine SMS geschrieben und er hat mir recht eindeutig geantwortet: Zu dem von mir gewünschten Preis würde er den Van nicht verkaufen… Hm, dabei war es echt so toll und ich habe mich von vornherein in das kleine Baby verknallt. Nicht zu alt, nicht zu viele Kilometer runter… Gefunden habe ich den Van online und als ich ihn mir an der Uni angeschaut habe und eine Runde um den Block gefahren habe, war ich gleich noch verliebter. Aber der Preis war einfach viel zu hoch. Einfach krass, wie teuer Autos hier sind – nicht zu vergleichen mit damals als Alex und ich nen Van für 800 Dollar gekauft haben… Aber egal: Ich suche weiter. Ich brauche auf jeden Fall nen Van! Schnell!

Zuhause mit Zuhause gesprochen

Endlich habe ich es geschafft mit Tin zu telefonieren. Gestern war es soweit. Die Arme liegt krank im Bett. Aber es tat gut, ihre Stimme zu hören. Und wie ich sie kenne, ist sie ganz bald wieder fit. Ob Alex das auch schafft? Der ist gerade in Indonesien – und liegt krank im Bett… Oh je. Gut, dass die Meike dabei ist!

Ich habe dieses Wochenende erstmalig richtig krass gemerkt, dass ich mich hier in Sydney daheim fühle. Immer wieder laufe ich in Leute [I bump into people = wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?], die ich kenne, den Weg nach Hause kenne ich im Schlaf, die Stadt immer besser. Wenn im Fernsehen Deutsche Welle-Nachrichten laufen, checke ich oft nicht, dass die Interviews auf Deutsch sind und nur ins Englische übersetzt werden… Merkwürdig, wie schnell das andere Ende der Welt heimelig wird…

Eine Reise um die Welt

Vergangenes Wochenende war ich irgendwie überall: In Mexiko, in Bayern, in Deutschland (jaha, das kann man sehr wohl getrennt voneinander betrachten), in Brasilien und Amerika. Krass, nicht? Samstag haben Dominica und ich Darran im Löwenbräu getroffen. Da wird jetzt schon Oktoberfest gefeiert! Krass. Bestimmt besser als in München! Eigentlich würde ich diese Bayerische Schnick-Schnack-Kneipe in The Rocks ja meiden, aber Darran meinte, dass wir unbedingt kommen sollten. Soooo krass: Jede Bedienung im Dirndl, alle möglichen Bayerischen Biere zu horrend überteuerten Preisen und eine super Stimmung. Später kam Andreas noch hinzu und Dominica, er und ich sind am späten Abend weiter gezogen in einen anderen Club. Eine super geile Nacht – ich war um vier im Bett. Besonders toll: Darran rief später am Abend an als ich auf dem Weg in den anderen Club war: Ich nahm ab und fühlte mich nach Deutschland gebeamt: In meinem Handy waren Nenas 99 Luftballons zu hören. Sie spielten es im Löwenbräu und da Darran wusste, dass ich bei dem Lied so abgehen kann, rief er mich an! Wunderherrlich…

In Mexiko war ich gleich zwei Mal. Samstag mit Dominica als wir Burritos machten und Sonntag als Dominica mit Katharina und Andreas vorbeikamen, um gleich noch einmal Burritos zu essen! Besonders gelungen mal wieder: Mein Nachtisch. Mniam!

In Brasilien war ich Sonntag. In Darling Harbour wurde ein großes Brasilianer-Festival gefeiert und gemeinsam haben wir die Hüften zu den Rhythmen geschwungen. Anschließend ging es für mich nach Amerika, um in einer Kneipe in Newtown Live-Jazz zu hören. Angenehm. Aber irgendwie nicht so toll wie die vielen Straßenmusiker, die ich am Samstag aufgenommen und fotografiert habe. Es lohnt sich wirklich, demnächst auf meinem Newtown-Blog vorbei zu schauen. Sogar für die, die kein Englisch sprechen. Ich hatte ja vor, die Serie 14/7 zu starten. Nun, mittlerweile hat sie einen anderen Namen: 21-7. Aber der Inhalt ist der Gleiche: Sieben Straßenmusiker aus Newtown. Vorgestellt. Vier von ihnen habe ich Samstag gefunden. Das spannende: Sie spielen alle etwas andere Musik und unterschiedliche Instrumente. Aber mehr wird noch nicht verraten. Morgen geht es los! Reinklicken!

Chillout in Therese's Sauna

Wenn ich schon nicht beide Welten miteinander verbinden kann und zudem ziemlich unigeplagt bin, muss ich nach Balance suchen. Und die finde ich. Seit diesem Montag… Außerdem sind seit heute FERIEN! Hurra. Das befreit zwar nicht von Uniarbeit,  aber ich kann etwas mehr entspannen. Das Wetter war bis Mittwoch recht schlecht – da war Uniarbeit super. Gestern waren es aber wieder 32 Grad – und die haben wir auf der Dachterrasse von Therese ausklingen lassen. Gerade bin ich aus der Sauna und dem Swimmingpool zurückgekehrt, ich hasse Laura(s), finde Journalismus mittlerweile doof und bin immer noch verliebt. Zurzeit irgendwie vor allem in Cliffhanger!

Herrlich! Vielen Dank für die unglaublich vielen Reaktionen. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass der Cliffhanger in meinem letzten Blogeintrag so viele Fragezeichen aufwirft? Aber anscheinend hat die Auseinandersetzung mit GZSZ (die ja Meister mit Andeutungen sind, die in der überüberübernächsten Folge aufgeklärt werden) für die Befragungs- und Inhaltsanalyse-Klasse in Hamburg etwas gebracht: Ich weiß jetzt, wie man Cliffhanger schreibt. Dabei haben wir uns doch eigentlich eher mit der Alltagsbeeinflussung von Fans durch GZSZ befasst? Ja, Claudia, ja Bekki. Ja, Mama. Ja, Welt. Ich bin verliebt! Ach, das ist so schön. Wir haben uns sogar getroffen. – Aber dazu später mehr.

Reden wir zuerst über Laura. Laura mag mich nicht. Laura kennt mich nicht einmal. Ich bin mir sicher. Aber: Laura scheint immer ans Telefon zu gehen, wenn ich anrufe. Und wenn sie nicht dran geht, dann ist sie aber auf jeden Fall die richtige Ansprechpartnerin. Und wo – das ist eigentlich egal! Oh je, diese Woche hat mich journalistisch wirklich auf die Palme gebracht. Es ist so unglaublich schwer, wenn man für die Tonne und nicht die ABC produziert. Die ganze Woche lang habe ich versucht, Politiker für mein Radiostück zu bekommen. Aber ich bin meist nicht einmal zu den Pressesprechern durchgekommen. Und wenn, dann hießen sie Laura oder so – und haben nie zurückgerufen. Meist ging das Gespräch ungefähr so:

„Hallo. Mein Name ist Peter Jagla. Ich mache einen Radioreport über Klimaveränderungen und YouthDecide. Die Woche, wo Jugendliche in ganz Australien wählen können, wie sie sich die Zukunft vorstellen. Dafür würde ich gerne Minister _____ interviewen.“

„Klar, ich stelle sie mal eben zu unserem Pressesprecher durch. Es ist Laura. – Ach, ganz kurz, für welche Anstalt soll der Beitrag sein?“

„Ähm, naja, ich bin Student an der UTS und mache das im Rahmen eines Radioprojektes an der Uni.“

„Ah, ok. Oh, ich sehe gerade, dass Laura telefoniert. Hm, kann sie Sie zurückrufen?“

„Hm, ja, klar. Wenn Sie das denn auch macht?“

„Klar. Wie ist die Nummer?“

„0404…“

„Ah ja, danke für den Anruf. Laura wird sich sicherlich gleich melden.“

…denkste… Laura ist doof.

Und so ist die Woche geendet wie erwartet: Ohne extrem hochrangigem Politiker und immer noch ohne verletzten Rettungswagenfahrer. Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass sogar das so schwer sein kann. Egal. Ich bleibe dran. Für meinen Online-Journalismus-Blog habe ich eine tolle Idee: Ich werde dieses Wochenende versuchen, sieben Straßenmusiker zu finden. Und ab kommender Woche startet dann die Serie 14/7: 14 days – 7 musicians. Ich will sie fotografieren und natürlich die Musik aufzeichnen, die sie machen. Zwei habe ich schon gefunden. Der Rest kommt morgen.

Janeece ist übrigens nicht nur ein Engel und hat mit mir Mittwoch SPIEGEL ONLINE super gut präsentiert – sie ist zudem unglaublich spannend. Bei einem Kaffee hat sie mir verraten, dass sie die Erfinderin des Namens Touareg ist, mit dem VW ja bekanntlich ein Auto getauft hat. In ihren fünf Jahren, die sie in Deutschland gelebt hat, hat sie für eine Agentur gearbeitet, die unter anderem auch die Dresdner Bank als Kunden hatte. Ich habe sie natürlich gefragt, ob „Aus Liebe zum Automobil“ oder „Das Auto“ auch ihre Kreationen waren. „Nein, leider nicht…“ – naja, was nicht ist… Peinlich übrigens: Typisch Deutsch habe ich Dan Kaufman, unseren Lehrer, natürlich mit zwei „n“ geschrieben. Das fand er gar nicht lustig – und ich sollte selbst den Zeigefinger heben! JAGLA, du bist Journalist. NAMEN AUFSCHREIBEN UND KONTROLLIEREN! Damn…

Gar nicht aufschreiben konnte ich mir irgendwann die vielen Namen der Leute, die wissen wollten, in wen ich denn bitte verliebt sei… Eigentlich war es erst nur die Claudia. Aber dann wurden es immer mehr. Was soll ich sagen? Ich finde, dass ich schon genug Informationen gegeben habe. Es ist ja auch für mich alles Neu und eine Art Annäherungsprozess. Aber wenn ich selbst sicherer bin und mehr über meine neue Liebe sagen kann, dann mache ich das natürlich auch. Fakt ist: Wir haben uns getroffen. Mittwochabend nach der Uni. Haben uns an der Ecke Jones und Thomas Street getroffen und mir war auch sofort klar, dass das was werden kann zwischen uns. Total toll, weil irgendwie alles gepasst hat. Sind dann auch eine Runde um den Block aber leider blieb gar nicht so viel Zeit. Andreas und Dominica wollten sich abends mit mir treffen und ich hatte den beiden das schon vorher versprochen. Aber: Wir sehen uns wieder! Wahrscheinlich schon morgen in Bondi am Strand! Ah! Geil!

Die Balance finden heißt also was? Naja, es heißt, dass ich neben der Uni versuche, viele andere Dinge zu machen. Wie beispielsweise Fitnessstudio, Kaffee mit Freunden oder der Zeitung, chillen und mit Freunden treffen… Mein Kommilitone Andi hat mir auf der Talent-Party letztes Wochenende bei Anne gesagt, dass er so neidisch sei: Ich würde ja noch so lange bleiben und zudem in Hamburg wohnen. Er – er müsse nach Aachen zurück. Laaaangweilig. Er würde Sydney jetzt schon vermissen. Und zuhause wisse eh niemand, wie es hier wirklich ist. RECHT hat er. Und daher muss ich einfach ein bisschen mehr genießen. Und eben die Balance finden. So wie gestern beispielsweise bei Therese: Wir haben ein BBQ auf ihrer wunderschönen Dachterrasse gemacht. Ihr Freund Per aus Schweden ist Donnerstag angekommen. Die beiden werden ab Samstag fast zwei Wochen in Neuseeland reisen.

Und heute haben wir uns wieder bei ihr getroffen, um den Swimmingpool und die Sauna zu nutzen. Puuuuh, das war entspannend. Und zur Krönung habe ich mir ausgedacht, Schoko-Obst zu machen. Also habe ich Früchte, Schokoladenglasur und Bambusstäbchen geholt – alter Falter, das war lecker… Und ist sooooo gut angekommen!

Und jetzt habe ich zwei Wochen vorlesungsfrei. Das befreit leider nicht von Uniaufgaben. Aber es wird insgesamt sicherlich chilliger! Ich freu mich. Und das Tollste: Darran hat ein Fahrrad für mich organisiert. Also kann ich jetzt wieder Busse Bus sein lassen und ENDLICH wieder Fahrrad fahren! Hurra!

Depois de 1 mês, ajeitamos as coisas por aqui e só agora conseguimos um tempo para escrevermos as novidades. O apartamento está completo e praticamente entramos na nossa nova rotina. Eu trabalho a 5 min. de casa (pra variar) e a Mê começou a estudar para conseguir o registro de médica. Além disso, conseguimos aproveitar muito o pouco tempo que tivemos.

Cronulla Beach: praia muito boa ao sul de Sydney pouco conhecida pelos turistas, mas muito apreciada pelos aussies. Conhecemos a praia através da Val, amiga da Alê. A Roberta também nos acompanhou.

Symbio Zoo: zoológico pouco conhecido pelos turistas, mas muito legal por ser aberto. Temos contato direto com os cangurus e koalas. A Mê, a Roberta, a Val e as outras crianças do zoo se divertiram bastante.

Bom, mudamos para o apartamento no sábado do dia 12/set. Até este dia ficamos num flat chamado Mantra on Kent (recomendo!) no centro de Sydney. Das várias gafes, uma das melhores foi o primeiro jantar que preparamos por conta própria. Flat completo, com cozinha, fogão, jogo de panelas e tudo que precisávamos para fazer aquela macarronada. Após ferver a água para cozinhar o macarrão, levantamos a tampa e veio aquele vapor de água. Até aí tudo bem, mas não contávamos com a eficiência do alarme de incêndio, que começou a tocar no volume máximo! Um verdadeiro teste de desespero! A Mê com a panela na mão tentando abrir as porcarias das janelas (não abriam por ser anti-ruído e todo vedado) e eu tentando fazer a criança parar de gritar. A cena foi ridícula! Ligamos para a recepção e, em menos de 5 minutos, aparece uma funcionária do flat. Ela resolveu o problema simplesmente ligando o exaustor, que é embutido e camuflado no armário da cozinha.

Interstate Moves

Interstate minimum $330 for up to 3 cubic metres

Interstate whole of truck (46 cubic metres/4 bedroom house):

- Sydney to Brisbane (or Brisbane to Sydney) $3850

- Sydney to Melbourne (or Melb to Sydney) $3850

- Sydney to Adelaide (or Adelaide to Sydney) $4400

With enough notice and time to plan these interstate prices can be reduced by backloading.

A backload is where multiple jobs are carried on the same return journey.

The above prices are for whole of truck exclusive use. Backloads can reduce costs by up to 40%.

Nb: All prices include GST, prices are charged in 15 minute blocks, travel time is negotiated (no depot to depot charge)

Conditions on fixed price moves and deliveries:

Ground or first floor access, truck within 20 metres of front door, small items must be packed by owner into boxes. 150 kg per item limit. Packing service available at per hour rate.

About Seachange Removals

Seachange Removals Pty Ltd is wholly owned and operated by Andrew Fox.

The company was formed in April 2009.

Andrew has been moving furniture since 1993 when at 14 years old he was helping in his family’s furniture store in Sydney. Andrew and his father worked after school and on weekends delivering new furniture to customers.

After leaving high school Andrew worked for investment banks in trader support, technical and back office roles for approximately seven years.

During the other 7 years since finishing school Andrew has worked for many of the larger furniture removals and transport companies in Sydney, Brisbane and Darwin as an offsider, driver, team leader and operations manager.

Seachange Removals works with many of Andrew’s previous employers. Andrew’s ongoing relationship with these other established companies and operators gives his customers access to other trucks, discounted storage and backloads.

Do you need boxes?

If you need boxes to move we can help.

We buy boxes in wholesale quantities to keep the price low.

We provide new boxes for $4 new and used boxes for $3 (when available).

We can drop off boxes to you before your move for free.

We buy back boxes for $1.50 each (Sydney metro only)

If you are using another removalist service and just want to buy boxes from us we can deliver them for $20 (Sydney metro)
