Hundertwasser buildings are awe inspiring, his forward thinking in design and architecture perhaps not the most practical(there are no straight walls in these apartments and are thus a challenge to the people who are willing to wait to move in and pay a hefty rent)

Hauke and I spent a relaxing day in his university town of Darmstadt exploring and having a bbq with some of his friends.  We woke up early the next morning to make the journey north to Hude where the Kurths live.  Our first stop was in Frankfurt where we explored the financial capital of Germany.  It is a beautiful city and was a nice change of pace to see such a modern city with skyscrapers.  Next we stopped in Cologne and visited the beautiful cathedral.  Despite the city being carpet bombed during WWII this cathedral somehow survived and still stands impressively today.  Our next stop was in Hannover where we spent the night with some of Hauke’s friends.  We visited a festival along the lake set-up for university students and made some new friends.  The next evening, after missing a train, we made it to Hude and I got my long-awaited reunion with the Kurth family.  You know people are your life-long friends when you can pick up right where you left off even after years apart.

I år är det fyrahundra år sedan den första företrädaren för Romanovdynastin besteg den ryska tronen. Valet av Mikhail Romanov som Rysslands tsar kom att sätta stopp för en längre period av politisk instabilitet. Under de följande trehundra åren växte Ryssland till världens största land och kom att bli en betydande kraft inom världspolitiken.

I över 700 år regerade den mäktiga Rurikdynastin Ryssland, men år 1598 tog det slut. De följande femton åren kom att präglas av maktstrider och under perioden tillsattes och avsattes härskare i en rasande fart, innan man slutligen, 1613, kunde ena landet under Mikhail Romanov. Det var få som hade förväntat sig att Mikhail skulle utnämnas till tsar. Striden hade istället stått mellan de två mäktiga släkterna Godunovs och Shuyksus och få betraktade den då sextonårige Mikhail Romanov som en seriös rival. Rådet, som bestod av en grupp förmögna adelsmän, ansåg dock att han var det lämpligaste kandidaten och den 11 juni placerade man den ryska kronan på den unge mannens huvud.

“Det var ätten Romanov som gjorde det ryska imperiet till ett av världens största och mäktigaste länder”, säger Evgeny Pchylov, rysk historiker. “Peter den store, Katarina den stora, Alexander I, Nikolai I och andra. Den tid som Romanovs styrde Ryssland har kommit att betraktas som den ryska civilisationens gyllene ålder.”

Ätten Romanov gick tidigt in för att knyta goda kontakter med Europa och många företrädare för dynastin gifte sig med medlemmar ur andra Europeiska kungahus. Historikern Faina Grimberg berättar:

Tsar Nikolai II tillsammans med Alix (till vänster) och Ella. 

“Inledningsvis ingick man äktenskap med medlemmar ur de skandinaviska kungahusen, men under Peter den store förändrades detta och äktenskap mellan Romanovs och medlemmar ur tyska adelsfamiljer blev vanliga. Först och främst äktade man prinsessor från regionen Hessen-Darmstadt. I slutet av 1800-talet (1894) gifte sig t.ex. den siste ryske tsaren, Nikolai II, med prinsessan Alix av Hessen och tio år tidigare hade tsarens farbror, storfurst Sergei Alexandrovich, gift sig med Alix av Hessens äldre syster, prinsessan Ella. Prinsessorna var barnbarn till drottning Victoria av England, och därigenom stärktes banden mellan Ryssland och Storbritannien.”

Det fanns även ett nära släktskap mellan Ryssland och huset Holstein-Gottorp. Peter den stores dotter, kejsarinnan Anna, gifte sig med hertig Charles Frederick av Holstein Gottorp, och deras son Peter III äktade Katarina den stora (som senare lät mörda sin make för att själv bestiga tronen och som var så avskydd av sin son att han, efter moderns död, gjorde det omöjligt för kvinnor att ärva den ryska tronen).

Andra företrädare för den kejserliga familjen gifte sig med medlemmar ur andra Europeiska kungahus. Den ryske kejsaren Nikolai I var t.ex. gift med prinsessan Charlotte Hohenzollern av Preussen och den siste tsarens far, Alexander III, var gift med prinsessan Dagmar av Danmark som var syster till kung Edvard VII:s gemål, drottning Alexandra av England. Familjen Romanov var även släkt med huset Nassau, Hannover samt den grekiska kungafamiljen.

På grund av släktbanden och Rysslands framsynta utrikespolitik var Ryssland ett högt respekterat land fram till imperiets fall 1917. Efter revolutionen gjorde den kommunistiska regimen sitt yttersta för att distansera landet från det “borgerliga” Västeuropa. Under sovjettiden försökte man istället att knyta starka band till Östeuropa, Asien och andra regioner.

Idag förknippar de flesta västlänningar Romanovdynastin med de fantastiska juvelprydda ägg som Fabergé lät tillverka åt Rysslands två sista tsarer, Alexander III och Nikolaj II under 1800-talets senare hälft.

Nu till dagens fråga: Vad tänker du på när du hör namnet Romanov? Tänker även du på juvelprydda Fabergéägg, eller tänker du kanske på något annat? Berätta gärna!

Aware of Henze’s hostility towards much Wagner, his librettist WH Auden had coaxed him very much in that direction, insisting that he study the score of Götterdämmerung – Henze always had less of a problem with Tristan, and indeed would write his own Tristan-work himself – and even had him attend a performance in Vienna, where he met Adorno, incidentally, intently studying his score, in order, according to his autobiography, that he should ‘learn to overcome’ his ‘aversions to Wagner’s music, aversions bound up in no small measure with my many unfortunate experiences in the past’. And, of course, with Germany’s many unfortunate experiences in the all-too-recent past. Success was at best mixed. According to his autobiography:

I was perfectly capable of judging the wider significance of Wagner’s music: as any fool can tell you, it is a summation of all Romantic experience… But I simply cannot abide this silly and self-regarding emotionalism, behind which it is impossible not to detect a neo-German mentality and ideology. There is the sense of an imperialist threat, of something militantly nationalistic, something disagreeably heterosexual and Aryan in all these rampant horn calls, this pseudo-Germanic Stabreim, these incessant chords of a seventh and all the insecure heroes and villains that people Wagner’s librettos.

The result was nevertheless in many respects Henze’s most Wagnerian drama, and one which he considered confronted ‘this “I was always against the Nazis”’ position, ‘a banal and frivolous stance (created on… stage in the last scene…)’. At the time, Henze was willing to consider that the musical path from Tristan, at least, might be of some importance in his work. In an interview for Die Welt, marking the premiere, he proclaimed his belief ‘that the road from Tristan to Mahler and Schoenberg is far from finished, and with The Bassarids I have tried to go further along it.’ Moreover, he could claim impeccable musical and German warrant for what many would decry as the score’s eclecticism:

It may be unfashionable to continue musical traditions in this way [he is specifically referring to the use of symphonic forms in the opera’s four ‘movements’], but with Goethe under my pillow, I’m not going to lose any sleep about the possibility of being accused of eclecticism. Goethe’s definition ran: ‘An eclectic … is anyone who, from that which surrounds him, takes what corresponds to his nature.’ If you wanted to do so, you could count Bach, Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Mahler, and Stravinsky as eclectics…

The composer could not, should not, ‘spend all his time destroying language instead of developing it dialectically’.

That said, the very success of the opera in so bourgeois a context troubled Henze, that unease not merely coincidental with his political move from what he would call ‘generalised anti-fascism’, inspired, he explained, by the example of Italian Marxist friends. He had intervened politically, not least in 1965 during Willy Brandt’s election campaign, but now, from Rudi Dutschke and his comrades he ‘now learned to see contexts, and to see myself within those contexts’. This was why he took the decision that he would write not for himself and his friends, but ‘to help socialism’, that he would embody in his work ‘all the problems of contemporary bourgeois music,’ and yet ‘transform these into something that the masses can understand’. This certainly did not involve submitting to commercial considerations, but nor was there any ‘place for worry about losing elite notions of value’. In September 1968, Henze published a declaration, ‘Mein Standpunkt’, ending:

Unnecessary are new museums, opera houses, and world premieres. Necessary, to set about the realisation of dreams. Necessary, to abolish the dominion of men over men. Necessary, to change mankind, which is to say: necessary, the creation of mankind’s greatest work of art: the World Revolution.

Those words could almost have come straight from an earlier German revolutionary-composer’s pen, from Wagner’s 1849 Die Revolution.  read more

Das bedeutet, sie sucht jetzt eine Wohnung und wird innerhalb der nächsten 2 Monate da hoch ziehen.

Sobald ich heimkomme, schreibe ich noch ein paar Klausuren und mache noch meinen Job an den Uni (Tutor beim PSE Kindercampus). Danach werde ich auch nicht mehr in Darmstadt unterwegs sein.

Studieren werde ich dann ab WiSe13/14 an der Uni Oldenburg. Erster Kontakt zum Thema Anerkennungen etc. war schon sehr vielversprechend.

Es tut mir ja sehr Leid, das ich Mimi beim Umzug im Stich lasse. Ich hoffe der ein oder andere meiner Leser kann mal mit anpacken.

Ist eine ganz schön seltsame Situation, mein Leben @home verändert sich drastisch während ich etwa 7500km entfernt bin.

Ich mag die Nordsee! Wird bestimmt toll! Ihr könnt dann alle bei uns (Sommer-)Urlaub machen!(dafür bekomme ich bestimmt Ärger^^)

Too bad the key-chain not made of gold.

Continuing on from Achtung!, I had less than one hour to get some rest and get ready to go to work. I did try to get some nap but to little avail. So what I did was, what else other than taking photos of my room. The name of the hotel is Contel Darmstadt. From outside, one would never thought it would be a hotel. The building is not tall, probably just 5-storey high. Photo above is my room key. I’m not sure the reason why they use that big, super-heavy-paper-weight kind of key chain. Maybe in case of fire I can just throw it through my balcony’s glass sliding door for quicker escape.

I think I also need a dictionary.

There was a floor map behind the door to my room (red dot). This only reminds me of Jason Bourne when he refer to floor map to plan his escape route. Or in Titanic, a scene where an indian family standing infront of a map on the wall and the father was holding a dictionary shouted “English! English!” in dire situation.

I only cook instant noodles here.

Entering my room, to the left was bathroom, and just infront of it was my small kitchen. In the photo above, that two green bottles were Selters, German brand of naturally carbonated mineral water. Yes, you read it right. It’s carbonated – naturally. Green bottle is sparkling which taste like soda water and also sold in still version in blue bottle.

I turned on the laptop for photography purpose only.

This is where I spent most of my time after work. Lying down on that warm, comfy leather couch watching my old-skool CRT television and pretend that I understood german language. Or I can just sit infront of my laptop only listening to songs while eating instant-noodles because the wifi was so bad that I cannot do anything else. Or better still, I can just stand outside my balcony without my jacket on and freezed to the bone.

Now the view outside my hell room. Can you see that green building at the background? That’s MomaX. First thing that popped out of my mind was..

“Whoa! A nearby shopping mall. How convenient is that?”

Later that day I learnt that Momax is a furniture store.

Pond or puddle of water?

Same view from my balcony, looking down and there was a short bridge over a small.. err.. pond! Now it all make sense to me. After I throw my paper-weight room key to break the glass door, next step is to jump into a small freezing pond with a slight percentage that I would land on the bridge. That must be the reason why it is painted in red.

I want my bolster.

My awesome crib. Hey that’s me in the mirror! I really like the lightings though it makes the surrounding walls looks like it have thousand cracks that made me think it would break and fall on me everytime I sleep at night.

How long can you stay abroad before you feel so homesick that you would do anything just to go home?

October 13, 2010. Frankfurt, Germany. I wouldn’t be there if not because of business trip. A very last minute business trip. My first time to board business class and also my first time to set foot in European countries. There was no return ticket. Duration of stay – to be advised.

I only had 32 hours to get ready. Bought new backpack. Warm clothing and apparel. Informed my bank to allow me to withdraw money abroad, just in case I have to stay longer than expected. Exchanged to Euro currency. Enabled call roaming. It was a long list but one of most important thing you should have before going to any European countries is Multi Power Adapter for your laptop, phone and camera. Worst scenario you can still ask from the hotel that you stay in. Oh don’t forget instant noodles too!

All wrapped up like a cocoon.

For backpackers, you can wrap you bag at the airport to secure it. Make sure you have all your important documents or your gadgets are inside your hand carry bag first before you wrap your luggage.

Both photos here were taken at Frankfurt Airport. It was early Wednesday morning, Hesse local time. From there I travel by taxi via Autobahn to my hotel located at Darmstadt, to get some rest and to do what I was sent there for.. to do work!

Am menționat de multe ori, în ultimii ani, că mă simt precum o pasăre călătoare. Însă nu-mi place să oscilez doar între două regiuni, precum majoritatea celor din specia mea. Îmi place să trăiesc, câte puțin, în diferite locuri.

Astfel, am început să-mi caut locul pentru anul viitor. Însă nu doar de dragul experienței. De data aceasta vreau să mă stabilesc pentru o perioadă mai lungă de timp în locul ales. De asta alegerea vine însoțită de puți stres, pentru că nu vreau să fac o greșeală.

Orașul în care mă aflu acum, Darmstadt, este doar un punct de plecare, precum orașul din care mă trag, Suceava. E un loc drăguț, însă nu mă văd locuind aici pentru o perioadă mai lungă de timp. Așa că mă pregătesc să-mi iau avânt.

Deși m-am documentat și am ales câteva orașe de pe aici. De fapt universitățile din orașe. Lista cuprinde 12 orașe mai cunoscute însă, după o privire mai atentă, am ajuns la concluzia că, de fapt, mă atrag doar câteva: Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart și Munich. Dacă ar fi să le aranjez în ordinea preferințelor mele, lucrurile ar sta cam așa:

Berlin - lui C. nu îi place în mod special acest oraș. Atitudinea mea este, de asemenea, puțin rezervată. Totuși, este primul oraș de pe lista de opțiuni. Un oraș mare, plin de oportunități și de activități. Uneori, nu mă pot abține, și îl asemăn cu Bucureștiul, la noi. E mare, agmolerat, energic și, uneori, înfricoșător. On the bright side, chiria nu este la fel de costisitoare precum în alte orașe de pe aici. Opțiunile sunt mai variate decât în alte regiuni ale Germaniei. Însă nu sunt sigură dacă m-aș avânta de una singură în uriașul abis, în cazul în care C. nu va reuși să fie admis la medicină în Berlin.

Stuttgart - un oraș frumos. Un oraș care nu reușește să mă sperie la fel de mult precum Berlinul sau Munichul. După spusele lui C., este “un oraș mai mare decât Darmstadtul, însă mai mic decât Frankfurtul, însă drăguț”. Îmi place atunci când un oraș nu are statutul de capitală, pentru că nu se strâng toți hipsterii pe teritoriul său, precum în Berlin sau în București. Nu încerc să spun că toată populația capitalelor, menționate mai sus, este alcătuită din hipsteri, însă știți și voi cum stă treaba, uneori. Stuttgart, un oraș energic, însă nu și toxic. 

Hamburg - nu o să mint, întotdeauna m-a atras frumusețea acestui oraș. Mi-a cam spulberat visele și speranțele C., atunci când mi-a amintit care este riscul ca acest oraș să fie inundat, uneori. Eu sunt precum o pisică, nu-mi place apa, decât dacă e acoperită de bulbuci și miroase frumos, în baie. De asemenea, sunt sperioasă și n-am învățat niciodată să înot. Nu zic că îmi asum riscul de a muri înecată atunci când m-aș muta în Hamburg, însă nici nu pot dormi liniștită noaptea cu găndul ăsta. De altfel, totul mă atrage înspre nord: arhitectura, peisajul, opirtunitățile de a fotografia.

Munich - nu știu dacă mai are sens să enumăr lucrurile pozitive și lucrurile negative, în totalitate. N-am auzit să fiu murit cineva după ce s-a mutat aici. N-am auzit decât de bine, însă argumentul care a încheiat dezbaterea este prețul scump care este pus pe capul supraviețuirii în acest oraș: chirie, entertainment și așa mai departe. Totuși, who knows, maybe someday.. when I’ll be famous and successful. xD

now I’m living alone in germany my cousin lives 30 min away. I don’t have a lot of friends here so I spend most of my time alone so I started a blog and I do love book stores they are cool and big and library of darmstadt (the city I’m in) university is so beautiful and big ( I know where I would be spending my time now)

Researchers have developed a new software that makes the technology of opening car and home doors using smartphone apps more secure and versatile.

Researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology SIT in Darmstadt, Germany, will be demonstrating their ShareKey software, a solution to popularise the method.

“In essence, ShareKey offers two new functions: users can issue digital keys remotely and assign these keys certain user permissions. For instance, I can grant the building superintendent access to my apartment for a short period so that he can open the door for the gas meter to be read while

I’m at work,” said Alexandra Dmitrienko from the SIT.

“The solution is built around modern security technologies and can be easily integrated into existing access control systems,” Dmitrienko said in a statement.

ShareKey sends electronic keys directly to the user’s mobile phone, in the form of a QR code attached to an e-mail or MMS.

“Recently, users of parcel stations have fallen victim to phishing attacks. Equally, hackers continue to target their efforts on smartphones. In light of this, the big challenge was to protect the electronic keys without compromising the intuitive operation of such devices,” said Dmitrienko.

ShareKey works using the Near Field Communication (NFC) transmission standard, which allows data to be exchanged wirelessly over short ranges of up to a few centimeters.

“To open a door, all you need to do is hold your mobile phone close to the lock,” said Dmitrienko.

NFC interface and door locks only operate within a narrow bandwidth and have limited computing power.

Scientists at the SIT have equipped ShareKey with particularly resource-efficient communication protocols.

Electronic keys are reliably protected on the smartphone from malware and unauthorised access. This is achieved by leveraging advanced technologies which keep sensitive data on the smartphone separate from other data and apps.

Communication between the mobile phone and a central server is protected by established security protocols.

“And even if this communication is hacked into, it’s impossible for unauthorised people to gain access to the digital key,” he said.

A happy, sunny New Year!

Uneori, senzația de departe sau de trecut, mă păcălesc în a crede că, absolut tot ce am lăsat în urma mea, este  de neprețuit. Mintea mea refuză să mai facă diferența dintre un pumn de amintiri frumoase și alte câteva milioane de clipe în care probabil că îmi plângeam de milă. Dintr-o dată, tot noroiul se transformă în ciocolată, la comanda creierului meu, copleșit de atâtea efecte alb-negru, sepia, de fotografie învechită, instagram, ce mai vreți voi. De ce? Pentru că, desigur, orice ai fi avut în trecut, bun sau rău, va fi întotdeauna mai prețios decât ceea ce trăiești acum sau decât ceea ce te-așteaptă. Gândul ăla că nu mai poți avea niciodată ceea ce ai avut atunci te înnebunește și îți modelează cunoștințele și experiența dobândită.

Mă regăsesc. Pentru că mă las manipulată de ceea ce a fost. Am uitat de gropile perpetue din centrul Sucevei, de clădirile pe cale de dezmembrare din Iași, de unii oameni cu care am avut nenorocul de a mă întâlni.. Și problema nu este că am uitat, pentru că aceste lucruri nu sunt singurele ingrediente ale dezastrului. Ideea este că am ales să le ignor existența, în trecut sau în prezent, de dragul de a-mi ocroti amintirile impecabile pe care le-am fătat în locurile astea.

Da, era fain în liceu, cu sau fără gropi, eram liberă și plictisită majoritatea timpului, însă nu-mi dădeam seama de acest lucru. Nu-mi dădeam seama de cât de neimportantă eram pentru mediu, în general. Totul se rezuma la lipsa de griji și la frecatul mentei prin diferite zone ale orașului, cu sau fără gropi. A existat o perioadă în care uitasem că era să pic într-un imens șanț cu noroi, din cauza săpăturilor realizate PESTE TOT prin oraș. Uitasem de lipsa de varietate. Pentru că deja eram în Iași, iar timpul petrecut în Suceava era slăvit și preamărit, pentru că a fost încuiat în cutiuța cu trecut.

În Iași, clădirile erau deprimante la timpul respectiv, vremea era nasoală și străzile îmi stricau papucii noi. Of, de ce oare ne mută dintr-un corp, într-altul, al facultății?! Atât de mult de mers dinspre unul, înspre celălalt, atâta vreme pierdută, atâția prieteni pe care i-am pierdut pe drum.. Și, ca să pun capac, Palatul Culturii este în renovare până la infinit.. ăla fiind unul din avantajele de a fi în Iași. Îl poți vizita când vrea mușchiul tău. Au existat și momente faine. Multe. Dar mereu vor fi mai faine după ce le îndes și pe-alea în cutiuța cu trecut. Un lucru era clar – Iașiul era oribil, iar eu voiam cu disperare să mă mut în Cluj.

Ok, recunosc că nu prea am avut de ce să mă plâng în Cluj. În afară de trotuarul din fața blocului, care întotdeauna îmi tocea roțile de la troller și papucii. Mă împiedicam în mod regulat de fiecare denivelare. În rest.. foarte fain! Dar oare destul de? Nici măcar o lună nu trecuse, iar eu deja simțeam gustul covrigilor cu ciocolată din Iași. Deja retrăiam transferul de căldură dintre mine și un covridog proaspăt încălzit. Toate acele zile petrecute în Piața Unirii.. ahhh.. Copoul, în toată frumusețea sa.. Și așa am ajuns să circul cu trenul între Cluj și Iași mai des decât oricine altcineva. Mă rog, am avut și motive suplimentare, nu doar nostalgia. Însă se împleteau frumos, împreună.

Nu rămâne decât să zic că m-am mutat și din Cluj. Și mi-e dor de toate. La un loc. Mă screm zilnic să-mi amintesc și de toate motivele pentru care le-am lăsat în urmă pe fiecare, în parte. Uneori funcționează, uneori.. ahh covrigii din Iași. Uneori devin lucidă și procesez prezentul în mod corespunzător, uneori.. ahh zăpezile din Suceava.. saaaauuu.. toate străzile și străduțele din Cluj.
