Today’s Song Spotlight is “Darkness” by Darren Hayes, fron his 2004 album, The Tension and the Spark (it should be noted that this album was not released in the United States until it was released digitally about four years later).

Darren started out as the lead singer for Savage Garden. The duo disbanded after releasing two albums (Savage Garden and Affirmation). Darren went solo, and has released three solo albums: Spin, The Tension and the Spark, and This Delicate Thing We’ve Made. Since The Tension and the Spark wasn’t released in the United States at the time it was originally released, my husband and I ended up importing a copy (before that, though, we had managed to acquire Australian import singles for “Pop!ular” and “Darkness”). Since we acquired the single for “Darkness” while Dan and I were running our internet radio station and compiling our weekly music chart, “Darkness” was able to chart on AeschTunes. “Darkness” peaked at #12 on October 10, 2006. Personally, I really like the mood of this song, and it has to rank up there as one of my favorite songs from Darren Hayes’ solo career.

On the surface, the video for this song may not seem like much, but I really like the director’s use of darkness and light.

October 7th
Went driving again today.  The rain had cleared but there was a freezing wind instead so I didn’t do much leaving of the car!  Stopped in a place called Haverfordwest, and found a cafe with free wifi (yay!) then got dragged down to look at the marina (dad really really likes boats).  I also visited a shop that only sold things made from recycled materials, where the shopkeeper had an epic cute spaniel puppy.
Dad was annoying me again today; I don’t know what it is, but he keeps pronouncing things wrong!  Like Haverfordwest.  You’d think it was pretty simple.  Haver.  Ford.  West.  But no.  Haverston was mostly it, but there were some other fairly impressive manglings.  Why is it so difficult to look at a word and say it how it looks?!  It’s not like it’s Welsh or anything!  We went through a town called Saundersfoot yesterday.  Saunders.  Foot.  Nope.  Sandershot.  About a million times.  And the other day he pronounced Nazi to rhyme with ‘jazzy’.  Me: o.O
ARGH.
Anyway!  We stopped at another port for lunch.  Two things that I have seen more than enough of this trip to last a lifetime: churches and ports.  Srsly.  The wind was freezing (and northerly; this whole other-hemisphere thing is confusing sometimes – a northerly is supposed to be nice and warm!) so I got back into the car pretty sharpish after finishing my marmite and cheese sandwich.
Then another one for beer o’clock.  This one had an old brick factory, and a pub whose sign pronounced that it was established in 1743 AD.  Because otherwise people might think it was built in 1743 BC.
In case you can’t tell, I was a little tired and grumpy today!
Got to our hostel (at Pwll Deri – don’t even ask me how to pronounce it!) just after five-ish (after more assorted docks, ports, and beaches) and dad went off for a walk.  Very pretty sunset but he’d taken the camera so only one shot (I will upload some more at some point, I promise!).  I made friendship bracelets while I waited for him to get back, then dinner (still no idea what the mystery green vegetable is!  It doesn’t look like bok choy… and the packet just says ‘spring green vegetables’).  Then Scrabble.  I wanted to play Monopoly, but dad said it would take too long and that Scrabble was a better option (anyone who’s ever played Scrabble with my father knows how hilarious this is – he takes FOREVER to take a turn).  He wasn’t too bad tonight though (although I did end up searching my hair for split ends a couple of times).  It was close, but I ended up winning with ‘queef’ on a triple letter score.  Maybe not totally legit, but it’s in urban dictionary, and I’ve heard multiple people use it, so it totally counts
And now waiting for the washing machine to finish so I can put our clothes on to dry overnight!  Had a strange dream last night that Darren Hayes released a cover of Lady Gaga’s song ‘Paparazzi’… wonder if tonight’s will be just as strange?!

Speaking of strange… I had ‘Once In Royal David’s City’ stuck in my head for most of the day (or the only line that I know, anyway!).  No idea why, and it’s driving me up the wall!

Not only is the pro-football season just getting kicked off, but all those die-hard college football fans are painting their faces and donning their jerseys just waiting for September to roll around. Top 10 preseason picks have started to roll out by the experts and all eyes are on the upcoming superstars. It’s no doubt that after a 10-4 season last year that Virginia Tech is a favorite.

Not only were people watching the Hokies as a team but even more so watching Sophomore running back Darren Hayes. He was a star in the making, a coach’s dream. Last year, he set the Hokie freshman rushing record and was named MVP of the Orange Bowl when they won over Cincinnati. Yes, the entire Hokie nation was waiting with bated breath for Evans to take the field and show what he could do.

Everything was well as the Hokies prepared for the upcoming season. That is until Evans was running a typical route in practice and heard that sound no athlete ever wants to hear – a “pop” in his knee. Coaches and trainers knew it wasn’t good and after an examination, it was clear that Evans tore his ACL. His Sophomore season was over before it even began. You could almost hear the sighs of disappointment and disbelief throughout the Hokie nation when the news was announced.

An ACL strain is bad enough, but when someone actually tears the ligament, it’s a long road to recovery. Surgery is inevitable to repair the damage and the months of rehabilitation will be brutal. It will take months of strenuous exercises to restrengthen the knee and get it back to 100% working order.  Not only is this disheartening news for Evans and Hokie fans everywhere, but for the whole team. A major injury to a star player like this can have a devastating psychological effect on the entire team.

Coach Beamer is going to have a hard time trying to get the team morale up and their confidence cemented. When the Hokies take the field on September 5th in the Georgia Dome, they are going to have to really band together and play the game for Evans. Hopefully, Evans will have a speedy recovery and can strenghten his knee enough in the next year to make a return to the Hokie field as a Junior.  No doubt, Evans will have the best doctors and trainers around in the hopes of seeing this promising athlete run that ball down the field again.

Tenho certeza que muita gente se lembra do Savage Garden, a dupla australiana que estourou nos anos 90. A banda era formada por Darren Hayes no vocal e Daniel Jones em todo o resto. Só pra refrescar a memória: alguns dos maiores hits deles foram “Truly Madly Deeply”, “I Want You”, “Break Me, Shake Me” e “Crash And Burn”.

Quando a banda anunciou sua separação em 2001, Hayes resolveu se lançar em carreira solo. Em 2002 lançou o álbum “Spin”, que fez sucesso – não aqui no Brasil diga-se de passagem – e depois lançou ainda mais dois trabalhos que fizeram ainda menos sucesso. Agora, Darren Hayes se juntou com o produtor/cantor/compositor Robert Conley e formou a banda We Are Smug, e em maio de 2009 lançaram juntos o álbum “We Are Smug”, de 10 faixas. Quando pesquisei sobre o trabalho, li que era algo totalmente eletrônico e com batidas fortes. Fui logo atrás, empolgado! Afinal, eu sempre gostei muito de Savage Garden, e não achava o lance solo do Darren Hayes de todo mal (sem contar que sempre senti uma influência eletrônica no som solo dele, e sempre vi futuro nisso, se tivesse a produção certa).

Ledo engano: “We Are Smug” é terrível, é música fria e sem personalidade! Pra quem é como eu e sempre quer conferir por conta própria, o álbum foi disponibilizado de graça no site dedicado deles (http://www.wearesmug.com/). Hayes disse que esse lançamento gratuito não quer dizer que é isso que o trabalho vale. Eu concordo, afinal isso aí nem de graça… quem dirá pagando alguma coisa? Depois do fim do Savage Garden, o cara foi decaindo.

O músico anunciou ainda via Twitter que está terminando seu quarto álbum solo. Que medo! Acho que o mundo não está preparado pra tamanha tragédia.

I LOVE dark chocolate! …my favorite “flavor” of dark chocolate or way of eating it is combined with orange peel or orange peel bits. If you haven’t had it, don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. That’s my favorite …and because I once read in Men’s Health that it’s good for you to eat dark chocolate everyday I probably take what they meant to be healthy to the extreme …haha, like I do a lot of things. I also once read that if you eat enough dark chocolate it can make you feel like you’re in love  …so instead of using illegal substances to spur my creativity on I will sometimes get “sugar high”

I’d never heard of the word Feral until one day I was chatting with my friend Gabby from Perth, Australia and she jokingly described herself as “Feral”. I laughed and said, “What do you mean FERAL?”, “That’s not a REAL word right?”. She challenged me saying that it was a real word and that means “Resembling a wild animal”. Sure enough I looked it up in the dictionary and that’s exactly what it means. I started thinking that it’d be cool to write a song called “Feral”.

So how does my love of dark chocolate relate to the song “Feral”? New Years Eve 2007 I was on a cruise and for whatever reason didn’t really feel like partying. I was in a chill, eat dark chocolate, and watch a movie mood. An hour into the movie I’d eaten enough dark chocolate that I was having trouble watching the movie so I grabbed my guitar and that’s how Feral was written. I stayed up all night until the next morning writing the song and indulging.

At the time I’d been listing to a lot of 80s hair bands… Guns’n Roses, Twisted Sister, and especially Def Leppard! That really comes through lyrically and melodically in the song. I totally stole the “F F F Feral”  idea from the Def Leppard song “Foolin”, and I even sort of used one of their lines (Def Leppard has a song called “Stand Up Kick Love Into Motion) and paid tribute to GNR as well with these lyrics…
