originally published here Data visualization sounds pretty dry. Mundane, technical, the stuff of eco

originally published here

Data visualization sounds pretty dry. Mundane, technical, the stuff of economists and accountants. But that’s changed. Data is more accessible than ever. The US Federal government is releasing and publishing data in usable digital forms in an unprecedented fashion, the City of Vancouver and other municipalities around the world are doing the same. The keepers of the data are challenging constituents to do something with it. And the challenge has been taken up by many.

This week the specialist in the field of data visualization have gathered in Madrid for the 3rd annual Visualizer conference. With the goal of new ways to make data public and offer new tools to make this data meaningful.

Here’s a good look at some of the presentations at the conference from Information Aesthetic, one of the best blogs on the topic.

But the point here goes beyond a new trend and a powerful source of civic awareness. It’s about creating meaning, emotion, in a new way. In a way made possible by technology by a new medium. For example, a recent project by digital artist Todd Vanderlin, examines usage of the Boston Subway system.

Or another very well known project is Aaron Koblin’s Flight Patterns. Here Koblin took FAA data about flight routes over the US and visualized the patterns of movement over the course of a day. Again, using the most mundane information he created an emotive, informative, and compelling work.

Vancouver is home to one of the pioneers in the field, Jer Thorp. Jer, known by his online meme blprnt, is one of the masters at taking everyday things and building works of art out of them. A most compelling work in its conceptual simplicty and engaging aesthetic is GoodMorning. In it, Thorp visualizes entries from Twitter that contain the phrase “Good morning”. With this information he documents the evolution of a day in the Twitterverse using this simple data source.

In all these examples the creators, the artists, are taking very utilitarian subject matter which necessarilly compelling nor emotive and infusing it with new layers of expression. But with the data in the hands of an artist using tools like Processing and OpenFrameworks which make data visualization simple subway usage stats suddenly becomes fascinating. This is the power of art. Since the Cave of Altamira humans have been compelled to capture the everyday. To find meaning in the mundane, peel back the layers of routine, expresses the human spirit.

And that’s what we are wittnessing here. Analyzing the archives of day to day human activity through an artistic lens changes the conversation. We can look at subway data or flight paths or when people say good morning on Twitter in a way that says more than the data alone. That’s the power and the beauty of art in a digital age, massive amounts of everyday information can be transformed into elegant works of art.

A great refernece for anyway looking to get started down the path of data visualization is Ben Fry’s book Visualizing Data. Fry is one of the creators of the programming language Processing. A programming environment I’ve been using for the past year.

Jeg har faktisk sett Dr. Dolittle, Dr.Dolittle 2, Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanamo Bay, Harold and Kumar go to White Castle og These girls.

3. AUTO_REVAL (database configuration)
Melakukan revalidation ketika sebuah object invalid terdeteksi.

I skimmed through the GEM report for 2008 and found out a few good stuff that are relevant to this b

I skimmed through the GEM report for 2008 and found out a few good stuff that are relevant to this blog:

The first one is the age distribution of early stage founders:

Despite the fact that the biggest segment in every type of economies is always 25-34, you can notice that a large majority of entrepeneurs are actually over 34 year old. This is reassuring . This is also confirmed by a report from the Kauffman Foundation (May 2008) that presented the data in an other fashion:

Honestly I found this amazing.. What about all those stories of Undergrad student starting the best ideas out of their dorm room or their garage? Well, Yahoo was started by college student, same for DELL and for Facebook is probably the most impressive with its CEO.. But those are the flashy ones! How many companies are very successful but were started out of strong fundamentals, based on experience, skills and well thought business model and great technology? To wannabe Entrepreneurs: don’t be fooled by the few companies like Facebook or Twitter.. they are so rare that they shouldnt be taken as example for your next venture..

In the GEM report you could find the main reasons (auto reported) why Entrepreneurs stopped their business:

Around a third of the startups stop because they are not profitable (I hope those guys had at least a business model that was supposed to be making money – which is not always the case unfortunately) .. Around 20% for personal reasons (you can imagine what it could be: Arguing with your partners, spending too much time on the business and your partners wants to leave, loss of passion, etc..). What I find interesting is that only a few percent have the opportunity to Sell!..

Conclusion: It’s never too late to start a business (average is 39), and if you can make sure that at least the business is profitable (if not big) you can increase significantly your chances of success.. Seems obvious? Well.. wait a little and you’ll see that it’s not for a lot of entrepreneurs..

20 Things You Might Not Know About COBOL (as the Language Turns 50)
by Darryl Taft

The name COBOL was decided upon at a meeting of the Short Range Committee of CODASYL (the Conference on Data Systems Languages) held on Sept. 18, 1959.

COBOL, one of the oldest programming languages, gets its name as an acronym for Common Business-Oriented Language, and is primarily used in business, finance and administrative systems for companies and governments.

$2 trillion is the total investment in COBOL systems.

Five billion lines of new COBOL are developed every year.

More than 80 percent of all daily business transactions are processed in COBOL.

More than 70 percent of all worldwide business data is stored on a mainframe.

More than 70 percent of mission-critical applications are in COBOL.

Even 50 years later, 15 percent of all new application functionality will be written in COBOL.

More than 310 billion lines of software are in use today and more than 200 billion lines are COBOL (65 percent of the total software).

COBOL is an anagram of BCOOL!

The Mother of COBOL, Grace Hopper, is said to have invented the term “computer bug” when a moth got stuck in her Mark II computer and she joked she’d have to “de-bug” it.

There are 200 times more COBOL transactions per day than Google searches worldwide.

COBOL is changing with the times. COBOL is being re-energized as an important component of moving businesses to the Web seamlessly and efficiently.

An estimated 2 million people are currently working in COBOL in one form or another.

The COBOL 2002 standard includes support for object-oriented programming and other modern language features.

Work is progressing on the next full revision of the COBOL Standard. It is expected to be approved and available in the early 2010s.

Though named in September 1959, the COBOL subcommittee completed the specifications for COBOL in December 1959.

The first compilers for COBOL were subsequently implemented during the year 1960.

COBOL has been fashioned for execution within framework environments such as Java and Microsoft’s .NET. Micro Focus supports object-oriented COBOL compilers targeting the .NET framework.

Despite years of overwhelming success running business systems, COBOL has not been without its critics. Computer scientist and Turing Award recipient Edsger Dijkstra once said, “The use of COBOL cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense.”

"They've been naughty boys haven't they Mr Flibble?" T-Mobile employee's sell

"They've been naughty boys haven't they Mr Flibble?" T-Mobile employee's sell personal information. I wonder what filesharers and their ethos of "free data" make of that? Anyone believe they would tackle that question?

Is £5000 a deterrent?

Its been well reported in the last week about the personal data that T-Mobile has alleged to have lost control over and subsequently it appears that some unscrupulous employee’s have sold that data on. The worth of that data being that rival companies could use it to sell new subscriptions when a customer is coming to the end of their contract. It is now rumoured that in fact this is not current news as its been going on for over a year. It does seem to ring true. I have been a customer of T-Mobile and I have had many individuals ringing me up to offer me a new contract using many different tactics (as my current contract comes to an end) You may be wondering why I am going with this article, but I think it makes an interesting point about copyright and IP.

A couple of important points to note here though. Firstly the fine for an offense under the Data Protection Act will be around £5000, pretty small fry compared to the potential worth of the information. Secondly, T-Mobile does not know how many of their customers have left because of this leaked information and finally (and maybe most important of all) whilst the information of the customer has been sold to rivals, who else has it been sold to and whats their purpose?

One member of staff at T-Mobile has already been sacked, but it does ask the question how many other companies are yet to discover that an unscrupulous employee has sold their data?

The information commissioner (Christopher Grahame) said:

Many people will have wondered why and how they are being contacted by someone they do not know just before their existing phone contract is about to expire. We are considering the evidence with a view to prosecuting those responsible and I am keen to go much further and close down the entire unlawful industry in personal data. But, we will only be able to do this if blaggers and others who trade in personal data face the threat of a prison sentence.

One wonders where the deterrent is for this type of action. It was reported on a local radio feature, that a recent raid on a business that engaged in this type of practice, had officials posed with the question (by the owner) “Would you like me to write the check out now?”

P2P copyright infringement – “Do as I say, not as I do”?

So now we come to the main point of my article. Ive made many references to the site Torrentfreak, I asked the question of copyright infringement to be justified by any of its users and to date have received no responses. I know that they visit as I see the referrals coming into the site.

Have a look at some of the comments on Torrentfreak. It seems that file sharers believe that there is no problem with sharing data because, its just data (please correct me if I’m wrong) They see no problem with the sharing of movies, videos or other media, but they seem mysteriously silent on the T-mobile issue. If file sharers believe that all data should be shared, then surely they should have no problems with the personal data being shared with other companies? Please, if you are a file sharer put your opinion on that one.

Let me quote “The Hacker Ethic” found here.

….A free exchange of information, particularly when the information was in the form of a computer program, allows for greater overall creativity.

I’ll let you decide what the average file sharer believes.

They share a lot of the same goals and views, but have been created ad hoc with no overarching community that transcends the projects.

As Forum 2009 closed on Friday, we were left with some thoughts on the future direction of global health research. The conference in general was heavily weighted towards the need to drive health systems research and research on the social determinants of health.

Mention these issues to many lab scientists, however, and they would argue that these fields of study are far too “soft” a science for them to engage with.

This is what really damages research into the social factors affecting health. Traditional robust methods of interrogating an issue and gathering data such as randomised controlled trials have no traction when you are thinking about how a health system functions or when you are trying to evaluate a complex health intervention. These don’t fit into neat scientific boxes in the way that parasite counts or viral loads do.

But transforming these fields will require rigorous evidence – how else will we know what changes to make to improve health systems across the developing world?

It’s good news then that the EU announced yesterday at the meeting that its next call for grants in January 2010 would focus heavily on research into the social determinants of health.

Some would argue that poor living conditions and gender inequity affect health even more than the biological causes of disease. There is only one way to find out, of course: more research, and more robust evaluation of that research.

My name is Karl and I like trading as much as many others do. I’ve been around for quite a while and noticed that a lot of MetaTrader users want import the history to other programs like Advanced Get. I know that it’s kinda annoying to click through the menus to export the data for every single currency pair or whatever you like to trade.

Well, here is my solution! An easy to use indicator for MetaTrader 4. Just start the indicator on any given chart and it will export the history to a TXT file. The indicator can be used simultaneously on various charts and updates the exported history constantly.

I really hope that this indicator helps some of you guys. Feedback and suggestions are highly appreciated but please keep in mind that I won’t give any support regarding problems with other software (importing etc.).

All the best,

Samsung Corby The colour- Very bright, young, and possible appreciated only by these kind of people

Samsung Corby

The colour- Very bright, young, and possible appreciated only by these kind of people

I had the Yellow. Bright, almost offensive (to some, not me!) yellow- though I clearly supported Pink in the Corby Colour wars on Twitter .

The look- Oh la la!

My first impression about Corby was that- it is a darn good-looking phone. And I think I’ll still stay by that first impression. I might’ve my sister in the background flashing her iPhone like iPod, but given the price point, Corby to me was a stunner at just the right price. I must also admit, that when I looked at it, it looked fine with/without the price. The preloaded themes were a far cry from what other phones in the market come with, and this I mean in a pretty good way. I loved them. They felt funny, warm, and went along perfectly well with the sunny look. It’s also got an iPod like cartwheel for sound adjustments. On a quick dip-stick survey of my cousins (17 and 21), my sister (24), my colleagues (both 24) and boss (38) – all of them loved the way it looked. I guess Corby’s got the look just right.

The touch- Delicate though very responsive

The second reason for not getting an iPhone (which I almost use as a cliché for a touch phone) is that I felt it would get my typing speed slowed down. Of course I never used an iPhone due to the first reason that it is obscenely overpriced in India (for what it provides). But I could see why data usage surged with the “touch”. Corby has a multitouch interface, which responds very quickly so that, I felt with the dictionary on, I was up to speed very very quickly (this is quite a deal, as my Fringe/ Gtalk speeds are not easily discernable, i.e. I type just as fast on the phone). It did feel a bit weird to use an all touch phone from my regular all button phone, but it was a great experience. Very quick. However, the one thing that was bugging at times was that one has to lock the phone/ screen even if one is holding the phone, as it is too responsive, so if you’re not locked, you’re sending messages and calling people randomly. Locking isn’t that tough, however, it is darn delicate.

Inserting address “kink”

On my current phone if I have people in a group e.g. School A, School B, School C etc., I can type A, B and reach the people easily through my address book. However the Corby doesn’t quite recognize A, B separately and only searches for ‘School’. I guess it’s the inability to recognize “groups”. And since all my contacts have a prefixed group, it’s slightly bugging.

Deal maker or deal breaker?- No Wi-Fi

I think Samsung got it right, however, my provider Vodafone (and all not just them) need to come up with better data plans. I do not know which data plan would meet the needs of the Corby phone, as I am pretty much on a Wi-Fi network on my regular phone. This to me was the biggest hindrance in say buying a Corby as I would want to access data with it on my Wi-Fi- which is a space Corby keeps away from. Is that how they keep an ASP of 7,900? Apparently, there are some good data plans with Airtel. Vodafone- anyone listening? Sigh!

Widgets? Useful, but not the most intuitive to get going

Corby has widgets on the home screen which point to social networking sites like Twitter/ Facebook etc. These I didn’t think were overly intuitive to use (without the manual i.e., considering I had a demo model).

Battery? Low, low!!

Considering it’s a big phone with a huge screen, I already felt battery would be an issue. But with my limited phone usage (I am not so much of a talker, though I have my share of data- not exhaustive, but still) it lasted me just less than a day. Now if college kids is what their target is, Corby massively falls short of the battery levels they need. As those kids text, and click pictures ALL of the time.

Pictures? 2 Mp- decent, but hey Video recording- awesomeness!

I use a 5Mp camera- which I pretty much think rocks. I was slightly (not overtly) shocked that 2 Mp was also decent. And the video recording was fine too, just that the sound recorded is low- but that’s a case with most phones.

Price? Perfecto!

This is where I feel Corby has got it perfect. It the right price for the model. Going by what Samsung had said on the launch of Jet, guess touch leadership is still in sight!

Well then, let’s have more rolling!!

pernahkah flashdisk / harddisk anda kena virus ?…

blom tentu hilang hanya disembunyikan /Hidden.

cara membalikkannya :

Masuk command prompt (start > Run > Cmd)

Masuk ke drive tujuan mis C:\>

Ketik Attrib -r -a -s -h *.* /s /d

Tunggu hingga selesai
