It was spectacular. I’ve wrote before about ‘Jelajah Malaysia 2008′ and how i envied their mental and physical strength. But this is even more than that, here is the article I took from NST.

A showcase of special talent

2009/11/09

KUALA LUMPUR: It was no ordinary marathon when about 400 disabled people took part in the 16th Annual Charity Walk, Jog or Wheel-a-thon at Dataran Merdeka here yesterday.

The event, organised by the Spastic Children’s Association of Selangor and Federal Territory (SCAS & FT), was held in conjunction with its golden jubilee celebrations.

A percussion band, comprising members with cerebral palsy, showed off their mettle, while children with CP participated in a race that demonstrated routine exercises, such as walking with a walker and crawling through a cardboard box.

“These exercises may be easy for most children, but they are a challenge for those with cerebral palsy. However, the children do them with a smile,” said SCAS & FT president Datuk Dr Lam Peng Chong.

The highlight of the event was a dance performance by Reizo Zen, dubbed Malaysia’s Michael Jackson. Zen mimed and danced to three songs from the HIStory album.

Lam said 30 non-governmental organisations and sponsors raised RM350,000 for the charity walk. Part of the funds will go towards the association’s redevelopment programme.

“The redevelopment programme involves replacing our 50-year-old building with a six-storey block, at a cost of between RM12 million and RM16 million.

“We will be able to enrol more children into therapy programmes and provide better training facilities, a dormitory, an auditorium and an exhibition hall,” Lam said.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil pledged RM50,000 in aid after launching the event yesterday.

I like to cover this assignment, “Hari Keputeraan Agong” or King Birthday only held once a year here at Dataran Merdeka Kuala Lumpur usually on the very first Saturday in the month of June. Another special occasion that took place here is Royal Flag Bearing Procession in conjunction with His Majesty Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Wathiqu Billah Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah (The King) Birthday Celebration. Very colorful event and what I like most about covering this historical event is that “The Man In Uniform” very nice to look at and will be a great photography subject. Malaysia is a very unique country, our King keep on changing every five years. You can get that information somewhere, it’s our constitution.

As usual this event took place on the early morning. Our King arrive at 8:00 am sharp, so we photographers must be here one hour earlier to secure our position. It is very crucial to get a very good vantage point. Even though we are official photographers or press photographers, we are not provided with a special place. Usually they, the organizer will have a steps for us to position ourselves. This year there were none, we just like everybody else, the public, this is open place, we can choose our angle wherever we want but this is not good for us because we have to compete with the public, we are here to do our job, we are not here for a holiday so we should be provided with a better angle from the rest of the public because our picture will be seen across the world so we need to show the best from our country and for our country.

Nevertheless, I still get a good angle, next to me is Ahmad Yusni from EPA and next to him is Zainal ABD Halim from Reuters, so I’m in a very good company, three of us are using 300mm lens as our primary lens because the ceremony took place a bit far across the field. This special event only last for one hour, by 9:00 am our King will leave this place and proceed to National Palace where another event will took place, it was very busy day for our King during his Birthday as a King. I took a lot of photos and feel free to visit my flickr for more pictures.

Since most of our car is front wheel drive thus drifting is consider not possible unless risk to damage the car for it. While professional drifter can easily over steer their high horse power modified car at high speed to entertain surrounded crowd. It is a hot day on a dry track but pro still did pretty well.

Last Friday, I had a great trip with my friend, Aditya Wiradijaya.

We traveled from Masjid Jamek to bangsar by walk. We had much time at that time. since I had my last mid exam at the same day and Adit had completed his assignment before.

I wanted to take some photos with my camera. But my camera unluckily didnt help much, since the environment was very dark, and lack of light. So I decided to borrow Adit’s D40. So perhaps, the suitable word to explain this circumtance is “we share the camera” or “Adit let me use his camera”.

I got a chance to get some photos,

here are some photos which I took during the trip. Enjoy.

Since the first time I saw this wall, I knew I would like it. and..yea you know, I like it.

A couple of days ago, while I was lounging around at the Five Arts Centre studio and office, a couple of theatre friends dropped by and we got round to talking about developments in the KL arts circles.

One of the things that ‘naturally’ arose was how The Actors Studio Malaysia (or TAS, though not to be confused with The Actors Studio in New York) was losing its wonderful little theatre in the Bangsar Shopping Centre (BSC), a favourite haunt of KL expats. This did not come as a surprise because there was much talk about Bandar Raya Development Berhad (BRDB), the developers of BSC, not wanting to continue Actors Studio’s lease (because of various economic reasons – the performing arts makes money?!) and instead BRDB would build a new 400+ seater theatre in the new BSC Annexe as part of the renovations.

Unfortunately, BRDB has also decided against building the theatre, or any theatre at all there. I’ve not heard the reasons for it. Someone privy to the discussions confirmed that TAS Bangsar will close in February 2009, and no one knows what BRDB will replace the new 400+ seater theatre with (some were saying a futsal centre, which the source refuted).

After losing its amazingly mass-friendly Dataran Merdeka venues in the 2003 floods (or was that 2004?), TAS has moved into KLPAC as the resident theatre company there, as well as one of the three founding partners. Maybe the people in BRDB thought that since TAS already has a shiny space in Sentul it won’t need a hole-in-a-mall theatre anymore?

Well, I think BRDB is making the wrong move. The arts needs to be cultivated and invested in. Sure you won’t see immediate gains, but recognition does not come without much struggle first. If you had world-renowned theatre/performing arts companies (though I am not saying that TAS is one such example) perform in your venue, the cultural value and capital gained from such a presence is formidable.

Singapore understands it… Why can’t we?

Of course it’s not as straight forward as copying bulat-bulat – we’ve got to have a strong idea of where to go and an awareness of what has passed us by (we’re talking the National Cultural Policy of 1972, etc). But shutting down a theatre space… well, I’m not sure where BRDB is going.

Final word: It’s a sad, sad loss.

Yesterday I went out for walk around city of kuala lumpur, Tried to find out what i never see during my week day.

So yesterday I had a trip with my friend Toa which is my girl friend’s best friend around KL. We met at KL sentral. Then we start our trip from Masjid Jamek. Actually we like to take raya activities in masjid jamek. but when we reached there, there was nothing there. then we decided to move on to dataran merdeka. Here are the photos which i took around dataran merdeka (near dataran merdeka actually)

Dataran merdeka

I found a VW car in a small gang near dataran merdeka. I was very happy.because I personally love VW Beetle car. I took my camera immediately. Here are the photos

Vw 1

vw 2

I have been visited library since 5 years ago. A very old statistic shown each Malaysian only read two pages of book in single year. I hope this fact is not truth and we are better than that. I move from National Library to DBKL Library because of the book variety and new books availability.

DBKL introduce free membership since 2006 to encourage more visitor. The free account allow us to borrow 3 books. It a good move but same time library service quality is tend to improve. It is getting worst from day to day.

I have few comments on the library service especially the operation hour from 9am – 6pm daily. For working adults it’s too difficult to find time at this period. After work would be good time to do reading, research and self improvement. Sadly the library is only convenience for student and retiree. Moreover, it further shorten operation hours in weekend. What a miss.

The online library system is not reliable and getting worst. That was 3 months whereby the library run by manual like school library. The failure of server system resulted book deposit machine and online renewal unavailable. Not to mention time taken by librarian in searching book return records from paper file. Only one counter is available most of the time.

The enquiry telephone number is either busy or no one pick up. I was called to renew the book before it overdue. Calling more than 10 times in morning, no one answering. I always see two receptionist at the counter and a security officer nearby. Ain’t all three of them missing in action same time? The next working day I manage to call in to renew my book, they told me it’s overdued and cannot be renewed. I understand this but why no one answering the call during operation hour? The answer given by the officer was : “You have to call many times“. What the heck? Now you want to impose me the late penalty because of your service unavailability? Moreover the operation hours make me no chance to visit library. They close in the weekend again. Meaning to say I have to bear two weeks penalty whereby. Do they expect us to take holiday and visit library during weekday?

I remember a college student did a questionaire on how to improve the library. I was happily participate and hope DBKL will take a review. At least they can save time and cost in preparing such library survey. There are many disappointments, still (and getting worst).

The poor library service might be the reason why Malaysian less interest on it. I see more people read for free in mega book store. They rather squad and read it on floor. Our passion to knowledge is there. Let’s bring it, DBKL library.

The last time I had to wake up at the wee hours of the morning to go to a Merdeka Day parade, was probably more than five years ago, and for the sake of the high school marching band. Being a Penangite, and being away overseas to study, it was my first time attending the Merdeka Day parade at Dataran Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur. Probably the mother of all Merdeka Day parades around Malaysia.

The theme for the 51st Merdeka Day celebration this year is Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan (Unity, The Pillar of Success). Despite the lacked of hype this year (being Malaysians, I bet you all should know why), the crowd still managed to file into the Square before the break of dawn, to get a good spot by the railing along the parade stretch.

Not long after, the MC announced the arrival of Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Deputy Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Razak, both coming into the venue driving a Proton Persona and a Proton e-Savvy respectively.

Then, at precisely 8AM, came the Majesty himself, Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin. And just as his polished shoes stepped on the red carpet laid out for him, the clock tower above chimed eerily. It was so amazingly coincidental that I was impressed, yet freaked out a little at the same time. It just brought out a kind of superiority or power. Shivers.

The ceremony proceeded with the general. I stood amongst the spectators and listened to our National Anthem played twice – and another two more at the end. I raised my hand as we recited the Rukun Negara, the words still fresh in my head, as if it were just yesterday our primary school teachers forcefed the words into our heads for Monday assemblies. I watched around me as the crowd was led to the seven Merdeka! cheers. That was probably the most patriotic I could ever get as a Malaysian after so long. Heh.

Then, the parade truly began.

Across the march past, in the field stood some 6,000 participants from high schools and primary schools all over Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. Some filling up the seats with flags and pom-poms in red, yellow, white and blue – the colour of the Malaysian flag. Some flocking the field with uniforms in the colours of Jalur Gemilang, some in multi-cultural costomes, all set for a formation performance along with the patriotic songs – save Lux Aeterna, from the movie Requiem For a Dream – blaring from the speakers around us.

It brought chills down my spine, watching them move in one accord. And when Eye of the World came on, I thought I felt my eyes well up when the chorus came on. That song always make my skin go pimply. And it was at that moment, that I thought I felt a tiny piece of peace sprouting in me. Cliche, I know. But right then, I thought everything would be alright again for this country.

One thing good about a Merdeka Day parade in the capital city, is that you get to see the real big guns come out and play. We got the Ministers at the grand stand, along with the King himself. We got contingents of all governmental bodies there: the Royal Malay Regiment orchestra, the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM), the Malaysian Fire Brigade (BOMBA), the Kuala Lumpur City Council (DBKL), as well as the proud faces of the Malaysian Armed Forces, which formed the largest contingent that morning, with over 1,000 strong personnel tailed by ferocious battle tanks and invulnerable armoured vehicles.

There were the known leaders of Malaysia, rocking up the parade in 12 Lotus cars. And also the Proton Holdings Berhad, our own carmaking company, with 11 of their Proton models, dating back to the first Proton Saga in 1985 till the latest re-designed Proton Saga of 2008.

There were also contingents in smart uniforms and marches.

And also those in peculiar outfits. Meh.

But the highlight of the parade for me would be the marching bands. What I would give to be one of them again: dressed in the smartest uniform and flawless boots, marching past the grand stand in the most rigid manner you could muster, making sure your instrument is measured at 90 degree and you don’t run out with the others on the same line, marching along to the proud beat of the snares. Weeks and weeks of practice just to be godlike perfect for five seconds in front of the distinguished guests.

I perked up whenever I heard a marching band I recognised from back in the days. Victoria Institution, Ave Maria Convent, SMK Chung Hua… They did not fail to bring a smile on my face when I see their straightened backs and grandest salute, the immaculate tap of the snares and their purposeful and detached tumit marches, the majestic blare of the brass with the harmonious woodwinds and pipes.

I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Things may have been bleak this year for Malaysia, what with the recent changes and havoc with the politics, and price hikes in practically everything and anything. I would be telling a lie if I tell you our country is doing fine. I bet everyone present that morning knows how fucked up things are now. From the performers dancing along to the patriotic medleys in the finale, to the father bringing their children to yet another Merdeka Day parade, to the Ministers standing on the stage.

I am not saying we should just forget about celebrating Merdeka Day, because there is not an ounce of unity and independence left in us anymore. I am not saying let’s just pretend as if we are fine all along. I am saying remember what happened 51 years ago and since, who made this country possible, who made this country livable, who made this country visible. And not forget what we have been through to be united in a place we all call home, and how we are so close to breaking everything apart.

Happy Merdeka Day, my fellow Malaysians. Wherever you are. Near or far. We have come a long way.

To make it fair, as Indonesian who is studying in Malaysia, I also celebrated Malaysia’s Indep

To make it fair, as Indonesian who is studying in Malaysia, I also celebrated Malaysia’s Independence day as I got an invitation from others Indonesian friends (Pito & Hakim) to join with them. Malaysia celebrates it’s Indepedence every 31th August. and now already 51th old country. A lil bit younger than Indonesia actually.

I went to Central market (click here for more details about central market) with Pito my friend. I have no idea when i saw so many people out there. It was like New Year eve actually. Not like what I have in my mind. After we finally met Hakim, He guided us to a small cafe, at the back central market precisely. this cafe called Bau-Bau Cafe ( I have no idea why they named it bau-bau cafe, as bau means smelly in Bahasa Indonesia).

It is a small cafe actually but it is a bit difficult to find a place to hang out like this particular cafe in Kuala Lumpur. And at least this experience added some hang out place in kuala lumpur in my brain. Hakim and his friend Ala told me that bau-bau cafe quite popular among underground KL’s band. I took some photos to show how it was at that time, it was quite dense with Malaysia’s teenagers.hehe

(click the photo to see the description)

After the time showed 00:00 the fireworks started to blow up on KL’s sky, because bau bau cafe near dataran merdeka we could see the fireworks clearly.

The funiest thing was after the fireworks show had finished, KL’s Police then came to stop the band and asked all the people there to dismiss. What an ironic scene.

I also heard a group of Indonesian workers who were already drunk shouted “Indonesia Merdeka!” not “Malaysia Merdeka”. It was very funny for me. Merdeka means “Independent or liberated” in English.

From what I have seen, The significant different within Indonesia’s Independece day and Malaysia’s independence is the way how they celebrate it.

In Indonesia, we must attend to a ceremony, to see our National Flag risen and trying to remember what our national hero done for the country (which i see it as good thing, because it rises awareness among Indonesian about nationalism) after finish with the ceremony later we do simple and traditional celebration. Here some photos from my Friend Ray in Jakarta, he shot some photos to show the celebration.

In Malaysia, they celebrate all night long with the fireworks and do convoy along the streets, shouts. and gather at Stadium to repeat what their pionner did at those times, created a unity song and sing along . ( nothing wrong actually, i like the song )

As usual, Kuala Lumpur will be a bit free from traffic on Saturday morning as government offices were closed and some of the private sectors had followed the government though they dont vote for BN in the last election… hahaha…

I thought it was as usual, but not for this Saturday – 14 June.

As I was passing the junction from Jalan Pahang to Jalan Titiwangsa, the road was suddenly closed. Argh.. any Hindraf today? I guess. I then move further to the front and I saw a herd of horses with the riders holding multi country flags and they are marching in Jalan Pahang. Followed by are various vehicles including of Kuala Lumpur Municipal Council (DBKL) and the Police (PDRM). People who wanted to go to office just can wait this unannounce event and they are all wasting our precious time, especially in the morning. The motorists are not allowed by the traffice police to go through, but we manage to follow the convoy closely from back passing some of the “taik kuda” that fall on the road.

I thought after Bulatan Pahang they will go to Tasik Titiwangsa and the traffic will be as usual but no, once again, I’m wrong. The horses are heading to Dataran Merdeka – forbidden land in Kuala Lumpur for protesters even you are fighting for the benefits of the people. The traffic has become worst.

Finally, when it reached the Junction of Jalan Pahang and Jalan Raja Muda Abdul Aziz, I managed to free myself from the “parade”. Not so lucky, I reached 5 minutes passed 9, my punch-card was RED.

The authority should plan something else next time, people are critisizing the DBKL for poor management of Kuala Lumpur, expensive yet not enough parking, fast flood, drug addicts, cleanliness of the city, quality of food served to the people and still you are doing things that make your clients tempered.

I vote for elected Mayor of KL.

Last thursday, the handsome kings of UTAR, which is also my friends ajak me to go dataran merdeka with them. So, we met at Masjid Jamek LRT Station. I saw Mr. Pan with someone. (ask me about this cause it is too sensitive to be posted) Firstly, we walked to Melaka Street to have dinner. As usual, lai turned up with his slippers and Neo with his normal geek clothing (shirt tucked in). Ironically, Lai ate maggie goreng which brought up much of my surprise as he is eating his own kin. Remember the chinese poem about the prince that try to kill his brother by forcing him to compose a poem in 7 steps and his brother came out with something about beans. That happened yesterday night as I saw the maggie goreng crying as Lai stuffed those poor little magggie into his mouth. Dr. Chang is always never early, so he arrived at 8 pm and we walked to Dataran Merdeka and later we walked to the central market. Along the way, we thought of going to Star Hill and we managed to reach there around 9.30 at night and we jalan-jalan at pavillion. Lai as usual scanning for his prey in the mall. Soon, we all left for home.
