Here’s 21 more thoughts for your enjoyment:

-They say buying eggs is cheaper by the dozen, but I’ll never find out because I have yet to find a store that will sell me a single egg.

-I’ve become quite good at feigning things recently: interest, joy, talking, love, etc.

-If you try calling one of those “Date Lines”, Stone Phillips gets really angry and hangs up on you.

-I think a really good game show would be one where people spin a wheel to see if they have good fortune.  Oh, wait.  There already is one: The Price Is Right.”

-Some people think pie is “heaven by the slice.”  I think carving pumpkins with a knife fits that description better.  Man, I hate pumpkins.

-I dress how I feel.  It just so happens I feel like a homeless person most of the time.

-I don’t see what the big deal with “Lady Gaga” is.  When I was a kid, we called it “Girl Crazy”.

-Has anyone else had that dream about the talking windmill?  It walked right up to me and said, “I’m your biggest fan.”

-The secret ingredient in your mom’s spaghetti is not “love”.  It’s Mrs. Dash.

-If you were able to combine Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” with Lonestar’s “Amazed”, the sheer overratedness of those songs together would cause the world to implode.

-A headline I wished I had read 10 years ago: “The creator of ‘The Simpsons’ announces: ‘We’re going to quit while we’re ahead.’”

-Just so I can mess with companies on their forms, I am going to legally change my name to “First Name Middle Initial Last Name”.

-My cat is quite smart. He was laying on the bathroom vent because he was cold. That was right after I pulled a few staples out of his mouth that he was eating.

-Is it just me, or does anyone else get the overwhelming urge to post a string of obscenities on my Facebook status, then immediately follow it up with “oh my gosh, someone hacked my account!”?

-Dogs have absolutely no sense of decency. They think it’s OK to walk around completely naked. The nerve!  Put some pants on!

-I’d like to buy the world a Coke. Mostly so its teeth would rot out and it would come crawling on its hands and knees for the cure to the only one who has it: ME.

-I don’t know what I ate, but it does NOT agree with my tapeworm.

-If you think about it, cottage cheese never really goes bad. It just gets cheesier.

-My cats are so cute! I like to look them square in the eye and tell them, “You don’t have a soul and nothing happens when you die.”

-I also want to walk down the street shouting a tyrade of obscenities, then follow up with, “Oh my gosh, someone hacked my account!”

-Babies are so stinking selfish.  GET A JOB.

Em 1984, as noites de sexta-feira eram abrigo de séries que se tornariam grandes clássicos da TV: ‘Miami Vice’, ‘Dallas’, ‘Hunter’, ‘Webster’, ‘Dukes of Hazzard’ e o ‘V’ original. Programação boba, leve demais? Pode ser. Mas pelo menos era original.

Hoje as sextas-feiras são um emaranhado de shows perdidos, no limbo, reprises. As emissoras simplesmente não sabem o que fazer com as sextas-feiras. E a preocupação cresce ainda mais quando NENHUM dos programas consegue passar dos 2 pontos na demo qualificada.

A última sexta-feira foi vencida pela CBS que exibiu ‘Ghost Whisperer’ (8 milhões e 1.9 ponto), ‘Medium’ (8.2 milhões e 1.9 ponto) e ‘Numbers’ (8.2 milhões e 1.8 ponto).

A ABC e a NBC empataram. A primeira exibiu ‘Supernanny’ (5 milhões e 1.4 ponto), ‘Ugly Betty’ (4.5 milhões e 1.3 ponto – finalmente subiu um pouquinho) e ‘20/20′ (6.7 milhões e 1.9 ponto). A NBC exibiu ‘Law & Order’ (7.5 milhões e 1.7 ponto), ‘Dateline’ (7.3 milhões e 1.7 ponto) e ‘The Jay Leno Show’ (4.7 milhões e 1.2 ponto).

A Fox exibiu reprises, enquanto a CW levou ‘Smallville’ ao ar, atingindo seu maior número de telespectadores na temporada (2.7 milhões e 1.2 ponto).

Pyramid schemes help to alleviate Chicago unemployment

Bars, movie theaters, grocery stores, pyramid schemes. Some businesses tend to weather economic downturns particularly well—but it’s pyramid schemes that take more Chicagoans out of poverty and into prosperity, a new study finds.

According to a study that preferred to be unnamed for fear of retribution—pyramid schemes have been known to viciously pursue litigation—Chicagoans are beginning work with these types of companies at ever-increasing rates.

The schemes confirm that they exist for the same reason any other business exists—to be “awesome” for their employees.

“I’m Hispanic and it’s in our DNA to want to provide for our families,” said Manuel Gonzales, an employee of a pyramid scheme whose leader is based in Chicago. “What I do allows me to do that, certainly monetarily and also with time. I only work 10 to 15 hours a week.”

According to the study, many Chicagoans who reported they recently left unemployment also reported they now make salaries of several hundred thousand dollars. (Caution: these results are not scientific. NBC’sDateline has found employees of pyramid schemes occasionally lie about salaries and working conditions to promote their organizations.)

“What are your values?” Gonzales said. “Whatever they are, we help you keep them while working with us.”

Organizations such as Better World Shopper and GoodGuide, whose purpose is to determine the social and environmental responsibility of companies, have not rated pyramid schemes. This means, in fact, that these organizations have not rated pyramid schemes negatively.

Martha Johnson, an Irving Park resident, has enjoyed her time working for a Chicago pyramid scheme.

“I tried searching Craigslist for jobs,” Johnson said. “I found a few Gold Coast residents who wanted to pay me $25 an hour to do their shopping, but after I gave them all my information, they never got back to me. I figured it was probably a scam, so I decided to go with a pyramid scheme instead. Now I’ll never have to worry about jobs or money again.”

Scheme insiders say that rather than using impersonal means like Craigslist, they prefer recruiting employees in the traditional way—by prowling in corner coffee shops.

“We look for people who appear ambitious but unemployed,” Gonzales said. “There are a lot of those nowadays. We’re working to change that.”

Non-movie review movie reviews by a guy who likes weird movies. Plus a free lesson in demonology.

There are two kinds of people in the world, those who liked the movie Paranormal Activity, and those who liked (and actually saw) its current counterpart and competition, The Fourth Kind. I’ve yet to find a critic who thought they were both great movies. Paranormal Activity is the highly buzzed about, surprise blockbuster which has received mainly positive reviews from critics- an independent thriller filmed on a $15,000 budget.

Then there’s The Fourth Kind. A multi-million dollar movie that combines side-by-side glossy professional reenactments next to the “real” footage interviews of “real” people. And the critics aren’t impressed.

But I am.

Conveniently, my wife and I saw both movies over the weekend, back-to-back. I punch people in the face that give away movie endings or essential plotlines. So there’s no fear in reading this that I will do that. I also hate the clichéd term “spoiler alert” which is yet another reason not to give away anything good about these movies.

To truly explain why The Fourth Kind is so great, I first have to clarify why Paranormal Activity is so awful. Paranormal Activity is in essence a movie I saw 10 years ago; evidently enough time has passed that I should have forgotten about The Blair Witch Project by now. I can safely say that anyone who has seen one has seen the other.

The few minor scary moments are overshadowed by the overwhelming feeling I had as I left the theatre, thinking, “That was it? I could have made that myself. That was so pointless. What a waste of my time and money…”

Paranormal Activity seemed like a good idea: A night-vision camera films a couple as they sleep, as they hope to spot the demonic creature that haunts them (makes noises) at night. The thing is, the thought of anyone watching over another person in their sleep is creepy anyway. I know I wouldn’t want to watch what I do in my own sleep.

Ironically, besides the demon, the other creepy creatures watching over the couple in their sleep are the viewers in the movie theatre themselves.

If the movie is indeed scary, that’s all it’s got going for it: Watching people toss and turn in their sleep, waiting for a demon to show up and maybe stand over the girl, possibly whispering things in her ear.

The reason my wife and I decided to see the movie in the first place was because of friends who warned us, “Don’t go see it! It’s demonic. I’ve had nightmares since I’ve watched it…” After hearing that a few times, nothing could inspire us more to go watch it.

But after seeing Paranormal Activity, I am confident that The Wizard of Oz is freakier than this one. Flying monkeys win any day over an invisible demon banging on the walls downstairs in the living room.

Something I think is funny about Paranormal Activity is that it mixes the ideology of demons with zombies. From all accounts I’ve ever read concerning demon possession, a possessed person does not try to kill other people who aren’t possessed. They try to harm themselves, but not commit murder. Demons are looking for a place to dwell in, not a body to kill. That’s my take, based on what Jesus said in Matthew 12:

“Now when the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order. Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself and they go in and live there… (43-45).”

I’ll put it this way, if a person’s idea of a good comedy TV show is Two and Half Men (which ratings prove that millions do), then there’s a good chance they would think Paranormal Activity is the epitome of horror movies.

And now for the underdog. The Fourth Kind focuses on the clients of Dr. Abigail Taylor, who hypnotizes her “alien abducted” clients into revealing the traumatic events that their minds are not allowing them to remember. They all have the same re-occurring nightmares and remnants of memories involving an owl that visits them in the night.

One of the most terrifying parts of this movie is when the abductees, under hypnosis, try to explain what happened to them. The terror on their faces says it all. And their screams.

The other part of this movie that really stands out to me is when one of the “alien’s” voices is recorded on a tape recorder. The language it speaks in is Sumerian (modern day Iran), which is one of the world’s oldest languages, dating back hundreds of years before Christ.

Interestingly, and this is one of the major reasons I’m fascinated by this movie, when they find a translator to decode what the “alien” said on the tape, the message is actually demonic: “I… am… God.” He also claims to be “savior”. What is misdiagnosed as alien abduction is actually demonic visits/possession.

Another hint of this demonic slant appears when one of the hypnotized abductees describes the re-occurring owl dream as “the ultimate feeling of hopelessness”. That’s a spiritual issue. Especially when combined the “alien’s” statements of ultimate deity.

I admit that if I wasn’t solid in my spiritual beliefs, this movie would keep me up at night (and possibly Paranormal Activity as well). The Bible makes it very clear that a person has put their trust in Jesus as their eternal hope, believing in Him to forgive them for their lifetime of spiritual debt, they will be inhabited by the Holy Spirit- therefore making it impossible for a demon spirit to dwell inside. The New Testament is full of stories about people who were possessed by demons, but none of them knew Jesus at that point.

And the biological half-brother of Jesus wrote in the book of James: “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. (2:19)”

In the Bible demons were cast out of people by using the name of Jesus and they shuddered at the fearful thought of him. I am inhabited by his Holy Spirit. So why in the world would I be afraid of a demon trying to inhabit me? It’s fascinating. It’s creepy. But I’m not worried it will happen to me.

There’s obviously spiritual warfare to deal with, but that’s a completely different story. That’s not possession; that’s moral combat.

The Fourth Kind is a meatball of sci-fi. It’s like putting all these things in a blender: Unsolved Mysteries, The X-Files, conversations with my Haitian dorm mate (who grew up in a village with witch doctors), LOST, Dateline, and the movie Insomnia.

It’s a pass/fail formula. For me, it works is because it was able to truly suspend my belief. It was completely entertaining. And at least for my wife and me, it was very thought provoking. Enough that we’re planning to see it again this weekend. I call it original, smart, truly frightening, sci-fi spiritual, trippy, and disturbing.

On the downside, I have trouble figuring out whether the acting is either really good or really bad. Plus it’s a movie that’s supposed to be about alien abduction but it’s really about demon possession and this is never addressed in the movie. And most importantly, I’m pretty sure the “real” footage is fake. But it doesn’t really bother me. Because this movie is effective, at least for the 15% of the critics who gave it positive reviews.

Aside from demons, something both Paranormal Activity and The Fourth Kind have in common is the lack of blood and violence. The secret to the scare of both of these thrillers is seeing terror through the victims. Not the beast itself. And that’s unusual in a movie genre crowded with slasher and torture films.

It all comes down to this question: What’s scarier? For a person to lose their life by a killer they can see, or to lose their soul by one that’s invisible?

My favorite all time economist Peter Schiff the owner and chief strategist of Euro Pacific Capital, now the contender of running for the senate seat of Connecticut.

I’ve totally agree with him, 100% on the economics front.

You any of you guys did managed to watched Dateline last Sunday night, he and this nut case Obama support goes head-to-head on Obama’s handling of the US ecomony, not even George Negus can’t help himself to be in control of the boxing ring!  I think it will be a good soap opera here.

was really peeved when i watched this episode of dateline about jewish settlers searching high and law in east jerusalem, buying up and forcibly evicting palestinian residents from their homes that were supposedly previously owned by jews that bordering all around the al aqsa masjid, to strategically stall the peace process, reinforce their opposition to a one state policy claiming that israel is for jews alone because they’re the “chosen ones”…

if they were the chosen ones -why then were they left wondering in the desert for 40 years before even setting foot on a preoccupied jerusalem!!! sounds like the damned then the chosen, especially considering their history throughout the centuries…how can you claim to be the chosen ones when you even murdered your own prophets sent by Allah to keep you guys on the right path!!! when the rest of europe was exterminating your very existence, the muslims were the ones that spared you!!! if they were the chosen ones -why is it not shown in how you treat people, especially your neighbours. its utterly shamefully disgusting!

i was thinking of investing in property in the emirates after doing a few projects in egypt once i start working again but after seeing this program, would really love to find a way in which i can own property in east jerusalem to do my bit in helping the palestinians there and securing al-aqsa, or at least support families in securing their property.

just seems so contradicting how the palestinians can’t do the same with their homes that a nurmerously occupied by their jewish counterparts, especially with the help of the not-so-neutral courts there

Lots of people are upset about Jay Leno’s new primetime show eating up scripted TV time.   Personally, we don’t care that he shoved out ER’s twentieth season.  But we do care that he’s stealing our Dateline time.  Do you know that NBC’s classic hypochondriac paradise is now on only twice a week?!  That’s not enough!  How are we supposed to know where the flesh-eating bacteria is this week?

Public Enemy to Public Health?

CBS ganhou a noite com ‘Ghost Whisperer’ (8.5 milhões de telespectadores e 2.1 pontos na demo qualificada), ‘Medium’ (8.4 milhões e 2.2 pontos) e ‘Numbers’ (8.1 milhões e 1.8 pontos). Os três programas ganharam em seus horários.

A NBC ficou em segundo (!) exibindo ‘Law & Order’ (7.2 milhões e 1.5 ponto), ‘Dateline’ (7.9 milhões e 1.8 ponto) e ‘The Jay Leno Show’ (6.1 milhões e 1.4 ponto). Sem concorrência do baseball e com Michelle Obama de convidada, ‘Leno’ subiu 17%.

Em terceiro lugar na noite, a ABC, que exibiu ‘Supernanny’ (4.7 milhões e 1.1 ponto), perdendo 27% de sua exibição há um ano atrás. ‘Ugly Betty’ (4.5 milhões e 1.2 ponto) caiu 15%, seguida de ‘20/20′ (6.5 milhões e 1.6 ponto).

A Fox ficou em quarto com ‘Brothers’ (2.4 milhões e 0.8 ponto) e ‘Til Death’ (2.0 milhões e 0.7 ponto). Em seu último episódio até dezembro, ‘Dollhouse’ atingiu a pior audiência de sua história: 2.1 milhões de telespectadores e 0.8 ponto, queda de 20% em relação ao último episódio, exibido duas semanas atrás.

2. Su NBC il quinto episodio inedito della ventesima stagione della serie giudiziaria Law & Order – I due volti della giustizia ha avuto 7,17 milioni di spettatori (1,5/5).

2. Su NBC la puntata 30 del talk-show quotidiano “The Jay Leno Show”, che ospitava la First Lady Michelle Obama, ha totalizzato 6,15 milioni di spettatori (1,4/5).
3. Su ABC il programma giornalistico “20/20″ ha avuto 5,60 milioni di spettatori (1,6/5).

• Stagioni complete per “Mercy”, “Community” e “Parks and Recreation”
  Il network NBC ha annunciato poche ore fa, tramite la presidente dell’intrattenimento di NBC e Universal Media Studios Angela Bromstad, di aver confermato per l’intera stagione, con 22 episodi a testa, la nuova serie Mercy, la nuova sit-com Community e la sit-com al secondo anno Parks and Recreation: le notizie erano tutt’altro che scontate, soprattutto per le due sit-com del giovedì che non hanno mai riscosso buoni ascolti nelle ultime settimane.
  Nesusna conferma invece in merito alla serie del lunedì Trauma, che anche a causa dello scarso traino di Heroes sta passando abbastanza inosservata.
  Fino ad oggi, Mercy ha avuto una media di 7,8 milioni di spettatori (2,1/5), Community è stata vista da 5,7 milioni di spettatori medi (2,6/5) e Parks and Recreation da 4,8 milioni (2,1/5).
• HBO rinnova “In Treatment” per una terza stagione
  Il canale cavo HBO ha ordinato una terza stagione della serie psicoanalitica In Treatment: la produzione inizierà nei primi mesi del 2010 a New York, per una trasmissione prevista per i mesi di ottobre-dicembre 2010.
  L’originale serie con Gabriel Byrne non ha mai sfondato dal punto di vista degli ascolti, ma è stata apprezzata da pubblico e critica per il suo cast: Byrne, che interpreta il protagonista Paul Weston, ha ricevuto due nomination agli Emmy Awards e ha vinto un Golden Globe; Dianne Wiest, interprete della terapista di Paul, e la guest-star Glynn Turman hanno a loro volta vinto degli Emmy per i loro ruoli.
  Gli spettatori totali, inclusi primi passaggi e repliche, sono stati 1,9 milioni nella prima stagione, e 1,7 milioni nella seconda.
  La terza stagione vedrà qualche cambiamento: prima di tutto lo showrunner Warren Leight ora è passato al nuovo dramma FX Lights Out, e verrà sostituito dai coniugi Anya Epstein e Dan Futterman (quest’ultimo è stato principalmente un attore fino ad oggi, e ha ricevuto una nomination per la sua sceneggiatura del film “Truman Capote”). Rimarranno gli altri produttori esecutivi Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Hagai Levi e Paris Barclay: Levi, creatore del format originale israeliano durato due stagioni e su cui è stata basata finora la serie americana, ha già delle nuove idee per la terza stagione, che a differenza delle precedenti deve essere scritta da zero, ma niente è stato confermato fino all’ingaggio dei nuovi showrunner e fino a quando Gabriel Byrne ha accettato di riprendere il suo ruolo.
  Ancora non si sa chi affiancherà Byrne nei nuovi episodi: Dianne Wiest, nonostante la trama relativa al suo personaggio si sia conclusa al termine della seconda stagione, potrebbe tornare anche nella terza stagione.

Em atitude inusitada – e precipitada – a NBC cancelou na semana passada o cop show ‘Southland’, criado por John Wells, famoso produtor executivo de ‘ER’ e criador de séries como ‘Smith’, ‘Angel Street’ e ‘Presidio Med’.

Não, a segunda temporada da série não foi ao ar. A emissora cancelou o programa antes mesmo da exibição de sua nova season premiere. Por quê?

Bom, cancelar uma série antes mesmo de sua estreia, ja tendo gravado episódios é absolutamente incomum. Principalmente pelos gastos que a emissora já teve com a produção – e não são baixos. Seis episódios já haviam sido produzidos e a volta da série só iria ao ar no dia 23 de outubro. No lugar da série, a NBC já está exibindo ‘Dateline’.

Jay Leno fez uma piada em seu programa (que é exibido na NBC) que fala bastante do atual momento do canal: “Os números da NBC não estão bons. Na verdade, a emissora cancelou a série ‘Southland’ antes mesmo dela ir ao ar. Daqui a pouco vão cancelar os programas antes mesmo dos roteiristas pensarem neles”.

Envolver Leno no assunto é no mínimo curioso, já que o ‘The Jay Leno Show’ vai ao ar todos os dias, às 22h. É o único talk show da TV norte-americana que é exibido todos os dias. Então reflita: se Leno fosse exibido apenas uma vez na semana, abriria espaço para quatro horas de programação. Reflita novamente: seria Leno o culpado indireto pelo cancelamento de ‘Southland’?

A decisão da NBC deixou a produção do seriado furiosa, inclusive Wells, que em nota oficial ao The Hollywood Reporter, disse estar extremamente chateado e lamenta que uma emissora que já abriu séries de tanto sucesso, tome este tipo de decisão precipitada hoje em dia. O produtor ainda confirma que está procurando uma nova casa para sua cria.

A NBC demorou, mas também se pronunciou, alegando que a produção era muito sombria e pesada para a TV aberta. Não era. Não mais que várias outras que são exibidas em outros canais. Mas é verdade que os executivos do canal já assistiram aos episódios da nova temporada e nós não.

Talvez ‘Southland’ jamais fosse um hit, já que desde a estreia de sua primeira temporada, a audiência só caiu. Mas a NBC não vive bons dias, não é de hoje, e séries da casa como ‘Mercy’ e ‘Trauma’ estão na boca do cancelamento. Quem sabe, se não fossem mais pacientes, não teriam um grande trunfo para exibir, por exemplo, nas noites de sexta-feira, predominantemente dominadas pela CBS.

Quanto a nova casa que Wells cita, a TNT seria o destino. A escolha é óbvia, já que o canal a cabo possui laços com a Warner Bros. TV, que produzia o seriado. De alguns anos para cá a TNT fez fama exibindo boas séries policias, como ‘The Closer’,  campeã de crítica e audiência.

Tanto o produtor como a emissora alegam que as conversas para que a série migre para o cabo, estão avançadas. Agora é esperar para ver o que acontece. E não duvidem que se a série continuar, pode ter mais audiência no cabo do que Leno tem na TV aberta.

A audiência das séries de drama que vão ar na sexta-feira foi boa. ‘Ghost Whisperer’ cresceu, ‘Law & Order’ também, e pasmem, até ‘Dollhouse’ foi melhor – mas ainda está em situação delicada.

A CBS ganhou a noite exibindo ‘Ghost Whisperer’ que se recuperou da queda de 24% da semana passada e fez 8.6 milhões e 2.1 ponto na demo qualificada 18-49.

Enquanto sua, sua oponente, ‘Law & Order’, na NBC, segunda colocada da noite, fez 1.5 ponto na demo e 7.2 milhões de telespectadores, ascenção de 25%. Já ‘Dateline’ (no slot que seria de ‘Southland’, recém cancelada) fez 7.1 milhões e 1.5 ponto. ‘The Jay Leno Show’ fechou a noite com 5.3 milhões e 1.4 ponto.

A ABC foi a terceira emissora da noite, reprisando suas séries.

Na Fox, quarta colocada da noite, ‘Brothers’ continua se arrastando: 0.8 ponto e 2.3 milhões assim como ‘Til Death’ com 2.4 milhões e o mesmo 0.8 ponto. Com estes números será uma surpresa se as duas séries continuarem entre nós dentro de algumas semanas.

Apesar do lead-in fraco, ‘Dollhouse’ teve ligeiro aumento de 11% e freou sua queda: 2.2 milhões de telespectadores e 1.0 ponto na demo. Os números da série são MUITO baixos e seu fim, com certeza está próximo. A Fox não deve renovar a série após a exibição do décimo terceiro episódio – Joss Whedon já anunciou que este episódio dará um fim a série, caso a Fox não a renove depois disso.

Na CW, ‘Smallville’ continua morna nos números: 2.3 milhões de telespectadores e 0.9 ponto na demo.

Convirtiéndose en la segunda baja de la temporada, la cadena NBCconfirmar la cancelación de sorprendió a todos al Southland, que entrará en la historia por ser cancelada días antes de poder estrenar su segunda temporada.

Esta cancelación es una gran sorpresa porque la serie policial de John Wells fue desechada luego de completar seis episodios de esta temporada, que iba a ser estrenada en solo dos semanas.

Southland, producida por Warner Bros. TV, tendría que haber sido estrenada en su nuevo día hace dos semanas, pero algunos días antes, la cadena decidió suspender su estreno hasta el 23 de octubre y suplantarla con el programa Dateline NBC.

Considerando que nadie sabe si estos seis episodios producidos podrán ser presentados en la televisión, los productores confirmaron que ya han comenzado a hablar con distintas cadenas para adquirir esta interesante serie.

Al conocer la cancelación, Wells se mostró decepcionado por la cadena, destacando que NBC ya no cuenta con espacio para serie de gran calidad, que fueron clave para su éxito. Además, dijo estar muy orgulloso de la serie, por lo que están buscando una nueva casa.

Aunque la cadena no ofreció muchos detalles sobre la cancelación, los rumores indican que los ejecutivos decidieron que la segunda temporada de Southland era demasiado oscura para su cadena, recordando que debían estrenar la serie a las 21 hs por la presencia de Jay Leno.

Sin dudas esta cancelación generará algunos problemas en la relación entre NBC y Wells, que ha estado detrás de algunas de las mejores y más exitosas series de la cadena en los últimos 15 años, incluyendo ER y The West Wing.

• Confermato l’ingresso di Lauren Graham a “Parenthood”
  Lo avevo anticipato qualche giorno fa: dopo pochi giorni di trattativa, ora la notizia è ufficiale, e l’attrice Lauren Graham (Una mamma per amica) è entrata nel cast della nuova serie midseason NBC Parenthood, dove sostituirà l’inizialmente prevista attrice Maura Tierney, che ha dovuto rinunciare dopo esser stata colpita da un tumore al seno.
  La serie, prodotta da Imagine Television e Universal Media Studios e creata da Jason Katims, vede un ricco cast fisso capitanato da Peter Krause, Erika Christensen, Dax Shepard, Bonnie Bedelia e Craig T. Nelson.
• Ritorno molto anticipato per “Chuck” stagione 3?
  Il network NBC se la passa molto male, con parecchi telefilm in pessime condizioni (vedi Heroes), novità di scarso impatto (Trauma) e serie chiuse ancora prima di riprendere (vedi Southland): pare allora che la terza stagione del telefilm Chuck con Zachary Levi potrebbe tornare molto prima dell’inizialmente prevista data di marzo 2010, forse già entro la fine di ottobre.
  Secondo molti addetti ai lavori, il cui parere è stato anticipato da Michael Ausiello di “Entertainment Weekly”, i primi quattro episodi già girati del terzo anno di Chuck sono tra i migliori dell’intera serie. Se il telefilm tornerà con questo anticipo, non si sa se nella vecchia collocazione del lunedì sera o ad altro orario, in base ai dati di ascolto ottenuti è possibile che venga ordinato un numero superiore di nuovi episodi rispetto ai 13 finora previsti.

An ABC interview spurred on by the debate surrounding Solana Larsen’s claim that there will be no foreign correspondents by 2013, examines both this changing media landscape and the opportunities available out there.

The concept of a journalist becoming a one man show appears to be becoming more and more of a main stream idea. As the interview with Sophie McNeill, a reporter for Dateline explains. McNeill is expected to write, take video footage and create several different versions of her story. She explains:
‘being a one man band, you get a huge advantage in just really being able to get an in-depth understanding of the situation, and really these days with everyone cutting down costs, no-one wants to send a five-man team from New York you know to Gaza for three weeks to investigate something, I mean that’s just beyond even the biggest network’s budget.’

The concept of a journalist beoming a ‘one man band’ is embraced by the recently formed online news site GlobalPost. Created in January 2009 by Philip Balboni the founder and formally the President of New England Cable News (NECEN) in North America. GlobalPost’s journalists are recquired to write 800 word reports, including both photo and video footage, each week and are also encouraged to keep a blog.

These insights reveal the new direction of the media embracing the convergence of technology. Hopefully leading to the creation of different opportunities for those working as foreign correspondents in the future.

Jeff Zucker has a bit of a reputation for choosing profitability that comes with a heavy long-term price and The Jay Leno Show may be the latest example. While the show is indeed making more money than NBC’s previous 10PM dramas, the bigger picture isn’t encouraging. NBC’s average rating at 10 PM is down by 43%, The Tonight Show is down 23% and, most troubling, local news (on NBC stations, though it’s probably safe to presume there’s something similar happening on affiliates) have also seen audiences shrink by 16%. NBC may be more profitable in the time slot, but its dragging down the shows that follow it.

The shrinking audience for the local news is the most troubling data point because, as Mark Evanier explains, that’s valuable to affiliate and if affiliates decide to bump Leno (most likely, as Evanier suggests, to air an early news show with Leno airing after prime time) there could be a domino effect that hurts the entire late night line up.

Meanwhile, the few hits NBC had at 10 PM — namely, Law & Order: SVU and Dateline — are facing troubles without the 10 PM slot. In its new time slot L&O is struggling against the stronger Criminal Minds. ABC’s newsmagazine 20/20, meanwhile, is once again winning its time slot now that its facing Leno and not Dateline.

Then again, the alternative would have been finding strong series that could be hits at 10PM and history shows it was unlikely that would happen at NBC.

• Rinvio di una settimana per il ritorno di “Ugly Betty”
  Gli appassionati di Ugly Betty dovranno aspettare un po’ più del previsto per il ritorno della serie con gli episodi inediti della quarta stagione al nuovo orario del venerdì alle ore 21.00 su ABC.
  Il network ha infatti deciso di rinviare di una settimana la partenza del telefilm, dal previsto 9 ottobre al 16 ottobre (con i primi due episodi inediti in onda alle 20.00): ciò permetterà ad ABC di utilizzare per una settimana in più le due ore del venerdì (ore 20.00 – 22.00) per replicare alcuni dei nuovi telefilm della settimana dando la possibilità di recuperarli a chi non ha avuto modo di vederli.
  Dal 23 ottobre la serie proseguirà nel suo orario regolare delle 21.00, preceduta dal reality “Supernanny”.
