The recent sale of Maika holding’s 79.85% stake in Oriental Capital Assurance Bhd to Tune Insurance

The recent sale of Maika holding’s 79.85% stake in Oriental Capital Assurance Bhd to Tune Insurance holdings Sdn Bhd by G Team Resources has raised concern as to how will be the surplus cash distributed. Tune insurance acquired the 79.85% stake in OCS BHD for RM156.91million. It is reported that oriental capital assurance Bhd (OCS) was sold for RM1.965 per share. OCA’s net tangible assets per share were at RM1.22 as of December 2009. A merchant bank and an insurance company were interested to buy the stake from Maika at RM1.59 per share that translated to 1.3 times price-to-book. But the OCS was finally sold for RM1.965 per share thus giving raise to surplus cash.

G team resources should be more transparent and explain to general public what the surplus is after the sale of OCA shares. MAIKA was set up as a vehicle to alleviate the economic achievements of Indian community. Even though MAIKA holding company was bought over and being liquidated, the Indian community is still angry and reeling over the mismanagement and abuses by MIC. Poor shareholders invested to support the attempt of MIC to set up an investment arm. Therefore as a liquidator G team resources must be transparent and sensitive to the feeling of disappointment of poor Indian shareholders and if there are any surplus that must be redistributed back to past shareholders.

The last AGM was held in June 2007. There was no AGM in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Not all shareholders sold their shares to G team resources. Some of the MAIKA shareholders refused to sell their shares. They are therefore minority shareholders now. Why no AGM was called.

It is public knowledge that MAIKA holdings affair had become an embarrassment and a political laibility to PM Datuk najib during the Hulu Selangor by election in April 2010. To absorb MIC and Samy Vellu from their wrong doings PM roped in Tan Sri Gnanalingan to buy the MAIKA shares at RM106 million and the 66000 shareholders were paid 80 cents per share. MAIKA had 74% stake in oriental Capital Assurance Bhd and some land left over from the Tumbok estate near Nilai plus a 60 million laon.

Samy Velu and his cohorts who cheated and mismanaged the holding company got away with frauds they committed. The BN government gave the criminals police protection and now the PM asking Indians to trust him. Even though Datuk Najib dissolved MAIKA holdings, Malaysian Indians will never forget the great injustice done to them by protecting the criminal and making him an ambassador for projects. It’s an insult to Malaysian Indians.

MIC leaders keep repeating that Indian votes have gone back to Barisan because of the big turnout in

MIC leaders keep repeating that Indian votes have gone back to Barisan because of the big turnout in MIC functions and by election results. Politics in Malaysia is no more static and not within UMNO’s control. Well when MIC provides meal, pocket money, hampers, entertainment and transport it is not surprising to get huge crowd. The way MIC leaders keep repeating this claim, it looks like they want to send a message to UMNO leaders that they are loyal and working for BN. This will keep them in the good books of UMNO which will reward MIC leaders with tokens and pittance. MIC leaders take pride in making such ludicrous claims. It is the same MIC that supported UMNO in eroding the Malaysian Indian’s basic rights. Their record for the past 55 years is nothing but betrayal, selling out and downright cheating the Indian community. Yet they can claim that Indians are returning back to BN. Indians all over the country don’t care a damn about MIC. Well the defacto president of MIC is Prime minister. He has his own personnel assistant to keep throwing goodies to Indian poor. MIC is just a front and eye wash to get Indian votes.

Prime minister came out with 1Malaysia campaign and gave them hope. After 3 years, Indians have realized that it’s an empty slogan of prime minister to deceive non Malays into voting for BN. Unfortunately a section of poor Indians who have very low financial stamina are vulnerable to vote buying. BN will always want Malaysian Indians to be poor so that they can buy their votes. MIC supported NEP abuses, UMNO robbing and plundering the wealth of this country. MIC supported the UMNO racist agendas like robbing of places in local universities, UMNO appointing racist in high places in government decision making bodies, Mahathir curtailing judicial independence and UMNO privatizing and robbing the money making government agencies. MIC has lost all moral right to represent the Indians.

Malaysian Indians have come a long way since 2008. They too have learnt like Kelantan voters. They will accept all goodies but not necessarily vote for BN. They have been deprived for many years what is rightfully theirs. So what’s wrong in accepting whatever given? In fact they should ask for more. But, whether they will vote for BN is a question mark. Voting is to determine the future government that will govern this country with fair and equal opportunities to all. The thinking among Indians now is for a change. Give opposition one or two terms. If they can’t govern, vote back for the other party. They are for two party systems. 55 years of marginalization and mismanagement of this country is enough. They want a political system that will safeguard their children and grandchildren. They regret for faithfully trusting MIC which ditch them and still trying to hoodwink that the Indians future is in UMNO’s hand. Many MIC leaders vote against BN rule too. It’s only those in position keep loyal to UMNO and continues to believe in BN lies for selfish resasons. For MIC leaders, what matters most is not fairness or equality but pleasing and keeping UMNO in good humor so that they will get favors and positions.

Prime minister wants Indians to trust (nambikai) him. But he keeps those who betrayed that trust close to him and appoint them in high post. MIC leaders who plundered MAIKA holdings are still in high places and not in prison. Corruption in police force will never allow Indians to come out of crime and gangs. MIC operates like an NGO organizing Ponggal and Deepavali functions and 1Malaysia dinner for Indians. So Mr. Palanivel, stop deceiving the poor Indians and support the new aspiration for 2 party systems of Malaysian Indians. Datuk keneth Eswaran who wants to create 50000 Indian entrepreneurs may show his great effort to secure Indian votes to Prime minister and his wife to get new business projects for himself. This is the type of BN Indian leaders they have. Indians are in the mood to change. It’s the only way forward.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak finally apologized for the pre 2008 mistakes of BN after 4

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak finally apologized for the pre 2008 mistakes of BN after 4 years. He further added that the people’s rejection is accepted with open heart and vowed to fix the past mistakes at a function in Kedah, the Malay heartland that rejected BN. Kedah UMNO information chief could not accept the Prime Minister’s apology and said that it was public perception that BN lost due to its own mistakes. Looks like UMNO little Napoleon’s cannot accept the prime minister’s open apology. UMNO national information leader wants 2/3 majority to fix its past mistakes. The deputy prime minister makes the apology a small matter and claimed that Malaysia has made huge progress in the fields of socio-economy, culture, education, international relations and various others. UMNO don’t know the meaning of apology.

Well it’s clear that UMNO politicians are making a big public relations exercise out of this public apology. This makes the apology not genuine. After 2008 and especially after the appointment of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the actions and words of UMNO do not show any semblance of change for the better. The Prime Minister looks lonely in his attempt to change. Can he reform UMNO from its entrenched racism, nepotism and corruption? UMNO’s reaction to the 2008 election losses was that the public have made grave mistakes in supporting Pakatan Rakyat and that UMNO will hold on to power by any means. They were desperate and their inherent character of racial intolerance, corruption and nepotism rearing their ugly heads. Change must come from the collective leadership and not just the top leader to be meaningful and effective.

The transformation programs of prime minister launched with high hopes have not yielded the desired outcome. The civil service is still inefficient and unable to improve the delivery mechanism. The UMNO backed bureaucrats are not zealous over the various transformational programs initiated by PEMANDU. Hundreds of millions spent with little to show as achievements. MACC, police and AG office have not brought any charges against the alleged wrongdoers of NFC fiasco. Wanita UMNO leader is still strong after the NFC exposure. There is no open tender yet in the award of government contracts. Billions of tax payer’s money is still siphoned out from government coffers. UMNO cronies like Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary still secure the bulk of government privatization projects with no transparency and accountability. Racial marginalization is as rampant as before 2008. So what is the use of apology without any improvement in the implementation, checks and balance in civil service?

Malaysians will trust the Prime Minister if projects like Lynas in gebeng and 1Care health scheme are scrapped and find a lasting solution to the stagnated salaries, brain drain and reduce the cost of living. Stop the rot in the palace of justice where justice is denied if not compromised. The list can go on and on. Malaysian Indians should not be pleased with such superficial apology that does not mean anything. No government has marginalized their citizens the way UMNO has marginalized the Indians. UMNO has put all blocks on progress of Indian community. The Prime minister’s apology means nothing to Malaysian Indians. There is no policy change to include Indians and other non Malays in the government employment and business opportunities. With all the sacrifice sweat and blood of our parents towards this country, this ungrateful UMNO government did not value them. Change is the only way forward.

COMMENT The 13th general election will be a battle of wits. Every national leader has his own ways and means to succeed in the arena of politics and power.

The main criteria in the assessment of a national leader’s performance is his ability to move the nation forward in the face of challenges or hold it together when great adversities befall the nation.

Ex-premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, though his government bore the hallmark of an undemocratic system intertwined with authoritarian rule and survived by the art of false leadership (deception), had managed to bring the nation to a greater height.

His successor, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi did not adopt the Mahathir doctrine and nor did he adopt good Islamic and universal values in his administration.

As such he did little in advancing the country and hence he is regarded by many as a failed leader.

Whereas Najib since taking over the premiership in 2009 has adopted a political system similar to that of Mahathir but intertwined with the art of psychological warfare to enable him to hold on to power and ward off opponents within Umno and the opposition

Todate his performance is similar to Abdullah, wherein he is yet to show any ability to improve the economic and national fundamentals.

But herein lies the difference.

Najib has a special wit and knowledge of psychological warfare. He is using it to win the hearts and minds of the people and to beat his political adversaries.

Najib’s strategy

In the presentation of the 2012 national budget, he unveiled both the budget and his veiled strategy which went unnoticed though the opposition had some misgivings about it.

That strategy came out in the open in the not guilty verdict handed out by the High Court judge on Jan 9, 2012.

After the 2008 general election, Najib who was the then deputy prime minister had already laid a witty plan to neutralise the opposition.

He needed to trap Anwar early, meaning by the time he became premier, Anwar will be half way stuck in a long court battle to the advantage of Najib.

Unlike Mahathir’s ploy in the Anwar Sodomy 1 trial where the former wanted to get Anwar convicted for good, Najib just wanted to buy time.

In the Anwar Sodomy II trial , the verdict showed that Najib did not want to convict Anwar outright but to go for a bigger kill later.

Najib’s plan was to first initiate a charge that would initially jeorpardise Anwar’s and Pakatan’s credibility in terms of leadership and ability to provide an alternative government respectively.

Whilst Anwar and Pakatan are busy with this, Najib focuses on Umno. He knows Umno has been struggling with the leadership and credibility troubles especially after 2008 and needs time to recover.

The verdict that Anwar was not guilty of the Sodomy II charge caught many by surprise. Many views have been put forth, as to who is the winner, loser in this case.

Najib, has the upperhand

Unbelieving, as it may be, such a straight forward court verdict could have many implications

Among them are:

i) The two year long trial has worn Anwar down mentally and physically. Consequently the Pakatan being dependent on Anwar as the supremo of the opposition coalition and provider of their sole leadership is in a weakened state.

ii) The not guilty verdict will have three psychological effects – Firstly that the judiciary under Najib is proven independent and fair.

Secondly on May 16, 2011, the High Court judge ruled that the victim Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan was a credible witness. But when he changed his mind and acquitted and discharged Anwar on Jan 9.

With this decision, the judge left in people’s mind the impression that he was biased and unjust to the victim Saiful Bukhari.

Thirdly should Anwar be found guilty, then it is confirmed that the judiciary under the Najib government is not independent and fair and this will definitely swing the people’s support away to the Pakatan in the 13th GE.

iii) In the first round of Anwar Sodomy II trial, Najib allowed Anwar to win in law but the former has scored a victory in the psychological warfare to win the hearts and minds of the people.

Should the prosecution file an appeal, it would appear they are seeking justice for the victim and not to get at Anwar. It is Saiful who wants justice.

There is a strong possibility the prosecution may file an appeal. The probability that the verdict could be overturned will definitely break Anwar and the opposition.

The victory would legally and psychologically go to Najib .

No polls yet

Najib will be ready to dissolve the Parliament, only when he has won this battle.

Hence I believe the general election will be put on hold. The 2012 budget as many people know is an election budget .

However what constitutes a decisive strategy is that the many goodies promised such as the salary increase and bonus to about 1.3 million civil servants and all kinds of financial assistance given to the poor families, university students, parents of primary and secondary pupils, ex-servicemen, taxi owners, Felda settlers and others will greatly influence the voting trend in the 13th GE in favour of the BN.

If you include the spouses and adult family members of these people, the benefits would cover a very large segment of the country’s voters.

These direct financial assistance by the Najib government will have a big influencial impact on the people’s minds.

The flooding of goodies is a psychological edge for Najib and a pleasant confusion for voters.

Such a political ploy will work for BN in the run up to the 13th GE.

Other moves to consolidate Najib’s power:

i) The conviction and one year jail term of former Selangor menteri besar Khir Toyo shows the Najib government is serious about eradicating corruption among politicians.

ii) The move to get as many local artistes to join Umno is in fact to get the support of thousands of their fans throughout the country to vote for BN.

Can Anwar handle Najib?

Anwar is no expert in psychological warfare though as a political fighter he can endure the kind of mental and physical pressures and risks set upon by his enemies which is quite an exceptional feat.

Anwar however is an expert in the strategy of politics of exposure.

Najib knows Umno has left many economic and political ills in its’ trails which Anwar has picked up and exposed to the full.

Such strategy has a very big political impact as proven in the 2008 GE.

Just after the verdict was announced on Jan 9, 2012 , Anwar boastfully said that he would topple the corrupt government of Najib.

Do you think Najib, the sly politician, will allow Anwar to do what is unthinkable to Umno?

Anwar should have reserved his statement. There are still many unfinished businesses in the run-up to the 13th GE.

We are yet to see the kind of undemocratic feats Najib will unleash should Umno’s defeat appear imminent.

Hearing the verdict on Jan 9, 2012, I now believe Najib is capable of committing the unexpected and is moving away from conventional strategies of political war.

Bantuan RM500, Pemansuhan PTK Imbuhan Penjawat Awam

Jika Datuk Seri Rais Yatim Ingin Mempromosikan Seni Kemudian Ia Perlu Tidak Menghabiskan RM100 Juta Tapi Hanya RM2 Juta On The Heritage Festival George Town Bulan-Long Dengan Malaysia Dan Pelaku Antarabangsa.

“Apa-apa pun kita jangan keruhkan suasana.

Lets use the One vote to kick the racist out…are you awake

Once he gets your votes, you will become si pendatang,si pelajur, ‘si mata sepet’ & ‘si botol’ again…remember this!

Remember BN won under Badawi in 2004? After winning, most essential goods went up. All of us suffered in the process and still suffering today. Why S’pore can buy a decent mixed rice for S2.50 and Malaysia will cost RM4.00. The people are paid almost the same salary but in different currency only. If a S’porean worker is paid S$800/month, a M’sian worker will also be paid RM800/month. But look at the money value!!! A S’porean worker is able to save more by buying cheaper food & goods. K

Dear fellow Malaysians – Malays, Chinese, Indians, Sabahan, Sarawakians, ………. BN/UMNO has been around FAR TOO LONG – 1/2 A CENTURY. Our so-called “VOICES IN PARLIAMENT” has become muted and dumb ! They have betrayed us ….
Do you still want them around to continue plundering the country and be like ” A BULL IN A CHINA SHOP ?” They will destroy EVERYTHING (those not destroyed yet) .
I WOULD RATHER VOTE FOR PR AND TAKE MY CHANCES WITH THEM, THAN TO VOTE FOR BN , WHO I KNOW WILL ROB ME !..AND DESTROY THE MALAYSIA THAT I KNOW AND LOVED.

Richard Loh

I cried when reading Najib’s speech delivered by his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at the 2nd World Chinese Economic Forum. I cried not because of happiness nor recognition but the insincere and hypocritical treatment of the Malaysian Chinese by the PM.

They can keep on bashing the Malaysian Chinese of being ungrateful, pendatang, prostitutes, si-sepet and claiming that they do not need the Malaysian Chinese votes to stay in power. No one can questions their imaginary ketuanan and special rights. The PM and also their president was very brave with his threat while giving his umno speech.

Now in sick bed and facing the real threat of losing the 13th GE without the Malaysian Chinese supports, the PM takes the opportunity of the 2nd World Chinese Economic Forum to beg for the Malaysian Chinese votes. He has no choice but to recognise that Malaysia will not be what it is today without the Malaysian Chinese support.

Now we want to see what Umno, Perkasa and Mahathir have to say about this speech by Najib.

“Malaysia would not be what it is today without the industry, expertise and dedication of the Malaysian Chinese community,”

“Likewise, there will be a bleak future for Malaysia without the Chinese community’s support. We would clearly fall short of reaching the goals to become a developed nation by 2020.”

He added that the community formed the backbone of the Malaysian economy through its small and medium enterprises.

This speech can prove only one thing, that Malaysian Chinese can survive without any government’s handout and do not have the time to quarrel or argue about the ketuanan melayu and their special rights, 54 years have shown that.

Speeches are just speeches and they are meaningless without action. We have heard many nice and juicy speeches by the PM regarding Malaysian Chinese and to date what actions have been taken. The racist school principals and the PM’s senior aide are not punished for the crimes they committed.

By allowing Umno, Perkasa, Mahathir and Utusan to spin and twist everything in sight into racial and religious issues prove that the PM is in Somniloquy Mode.

As a Malaysian Chinese, I am calling all others not to be sucked in by the PM’s nice speeches. He is good to you now because he wants your votes. Once he gets your votes, you will become pendatang again, you are ungrateful and if you do not like it you can go back to China. We are not beaten twice shy but many times over.

The only way to ensure that we remain recognised as a true Malaysian with equal rights and opportunities is to let Umno-BN sit as opposition for at least two terms come the 13th GE. Only then will Umno-BN learn to behave and appreciate each and every Malaysian. – http://ousel.blogspot.com/2010/11/pm-umno-bn-come-begging-for-chinese.html

“We don’t need Chinese and Indian to win the election” Johari Ghani, MD of C.I Holdings Bhd (Pemanis), UMNO Titiwangsa
“The ‘si mata sepet’ that has never gone to a mosque or surau only has one vote. The ‘si botol’ that only knows how to go up to Batu Caves up and down only has one vote,” said Hamim (of BTN).

Wake up ‘si mata sepet’ & ‘si botol’, voting Barisan Najis is like agreeing that you are a ‘si mata sepet’ or ‘si botol’. Don’t be stupid to vote BN…your vote is not needed. Lets use the ONE vote to kick the racists out….are you awake?

PM Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak: Four ‘diseases‘ of ruling party leaders in power for a long time. Parties which are too powerful seldom conduct an introspection of their weaknesses.

There are four ailments which usually strike political parties in power for a long time.

Should get rid of _

delusion,

amnesia,

inertia

and arrogance

before the people’s initial love for the government_

turned into hatred,

anger

and support the opposition.

Delusion set in with the fantasy that the support from the people would prolong

Amnesia caused one to lose sight of the original objective of one’s struggle.

Inertia would set in when one was reluctant to undertake reforms and changes

Arrogance reflected that one could not accept public reprimand. It would only cause anger in the people and make them dislike the ruling government.

For its revival, the ruling party must_

find a formula of rehabilitation

and implement the plan with consistency.

“That is what we are

working on

and that is what we are doing.

Only then can we achieve the desired huge victory again

It was not enough just to have a positive perception,

but necessary to nurture the people’s confidence in the ruling government through hard work and earnest efforts.

Let’s not be lackadaisical

and easily distracted.

For the ruling government to continue to helm the leadership of the country and in the states, every component party should be strengthened and consolidated.

As all of us know, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is a non-violent pro-democracy social activist of Myanmar; Winner of the 1990 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought and the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize. She said under the topic: Freedom from Fear (1991) in the Acceptance message for the 1990 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought (July 1991)_

It is not power that corrupts but fear.

Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and fear of the scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.

Most Burmese are familiar with the four kinds of corruption.

Corruption induced by desire, is deviation from the right path in pursuit of bribes or for the sake of those one loves.

Corruption due to anger is taking the wrong path to spite those against whom one bears ill will,

Aberration due to ignorance.

Corruption due to fear is perhaps the worst of the four, for not only fear, stifle and slowly destroy all sense of right and wrong, it so often lies at the root of the other three kinds of corruption.

Just as Corruption induced by desire, when not the result of sheer avarice, can be caused by_

fear of want

or fear of losing the goodwill of those one loves,

so fear of being surpassed,

humiliated

or injured in some way can provide the impetus for ill will.

And it would be difficult to dispel ignorance unless there is freedom to pursue the truth unfettered by fear.

With so close a relationship between fear and corruption it is little wonder that in any society where fear is rife corruption in all forms becomes deeply entrenched.

It would be difficult to dispel ignorance unless there is freedom to pursue the truth unfettered by fear. With so close a relationship between fear and corruption it is little wonder that in any society where fear is rife corruption in all forms becomes deeply entrenched.

The effort necessary to remain uncorrupted in an environment where fear is an integral part of everyday existence is not immediately apparent to those fortunate enough to live in states governed by the rule of law.

Just laws do not merely prevent corruption by

meting out impartial punishment to offenders. They also help to create a society in which people can fulfil the basic requirements necessary for the preservation of human dignity without recourse to corrupt practices.

Where there are no such laws,

the burden of upholding the principles of justice and common decency falls on the ordinary people.

It is the cumulative effect on their sustained effort and steady endurance which will change a nation where reason and conscience are warped by fear into one where legal rules exist to promote man’s desire for harmony and justice while restraining the less desirable destructive traits in his nature.

In an age when immense technological advances have created lethal weapons which could be, and are, used by the powerful and the unprincipled to dominate the weak and the helpless,

there is a compelling need for a closer relationship between politics and ethics at both the national and international levels.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations proclaims that ‘every individual and every organ of society’ should strive to promote the basic rights and freedoms

to which all human beings regardless of race, nationality or religion are entitled.

But as long as there are governments whose authority is founded on coercion rather than on the mandate of the people,

and interest groups which place short-term profits above long-term peace and prosperity, concerted international action to protect and promote human rights will remain at best a partially realized struggle.

The quintessential revolution is that of the spirit, born of an intellectual conviction of the need for change in those mental attitudes and values which shape the course of a nation’s development.

A revolution which aims merely at changing official policies and institutions with a view to an improvement in material conditions has little chance of genuine success.

Without a revolution of the spirit, the forces which produced the iniquities of the old order would continue to be operative, posing a constant threat to the process of reform and regeneration.

It is not enough merely to call for freedom, democracy and human rights.

There has to be a united determination to persevere in the struggle,

to make sacrifices in the name of enduring truths,

to resist the corrupting influences of_

desire,

ill will,

ignorance

and fear.

Among the basic freedoms to which men aspire that their lives might be full and uncramped, freedom from fear stands out as both a means and an end.

A people who would build a nation in which strong, democratic institutions are firmly established as a guarantee against state-induced power must first learn to liberate their own minds from apathy and fear.

Gandhi, that great apostle of non-violence, and Aung San, the founder of a national army, were very different personalities, but as there is an inevitable sameness about the challenges of authoritarian rule anywhere at any time, so there is a similarity in the intrinsic qualities of those who rise up to meet the challenge.

Fearlessness may be a gift

but perhaps more precious is the courage acquired through endeavour,

courage that comes from cultivating the habit of refusing to let fear dictate one’s actions,

courage that could be described as “grace under pressure” — grace which is renewed repeatedly in the face of harsh, unremitting pressure.

Within a system which denies the existence of basic human rights,

fear tends to be the order of the day.

Fear of imprisonment,

fear of torture,

fear of death,

fear of losing friends,

family,

property

or means of livelihood,

fear of poverty,

fear of isolation,

fear of failure.

A most insidious form of fear is that which masquerades as

common sense or even wisdom,

condemning as foolish,

reckless,

insignificant

or futile the small,

daily acts of courage which help to preserve man’s self-respect and inherent human dignity.

It is not easy for a people conditioned by fear under the iron rule of the principle that might is right to free themselves from the enervating miasma of fear.

Yet even under the most crushing state machinery courage rises up again and again, for fear is not the natural state of civilized man.

The wellspring of courage and endurance in the face of unbridled power is

generally a firm belief in the sanctity of ethical principles

combined with a historical sense that despite all setbacks

the condition of man is set on an ultimate course for both spiritual and material advancement.

It is his capacity for self-improvement and self-redemption which most distinguishes man from the mere brute.

At the root of human responsibility is_

the concept of perfection,

the urge to achieve it,

the intelligence to find a path towards it,

and the will to follow that path

if not to the end at least the distance needed to rise above individual limitations and environmental impediments.

It is man’s vision of a world fit for rational, civilized humanity which leads him to dare and to suffer to build societies free from want and fear.

Concepts such as truth, justice and compassion cannot be dismissed as trite when these are often the only bulwarks which stand against ruthless power.

KUALA LUMPUR — The existence of the whistle-blowing provisions in the country has strengthened Malaysia’s corporate governance in line with current global best practice.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said since the introduction of the provisions several years ago, the Securities Commission (SC) has received reports mainly from external auditors of public-listed companies. “Some of these reports have led to enforcement action being taken against the perpetrators, directors and senior management of the company. “With this, it is encouraging to note that a stronger culture of public accountability and integrity has been established,” he said in his keynote address at the World Congress of Accountants 2010 here. His speech was read by Minister in the Prime Minister Department, Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop.

Najib said the crucial role of accountants in detecting fraud was reflected in the number of whistle-blowers that had provided information to the SC under the protection of the Capital Market and Services Act. He said the Act imposed a mandatory duty upon auditors and specific employees of listed corporations to report breaches of security laws and the rules of the stock exchange to the authority.
