This service was released in January of this year and I don’t think it’s gotten the fanfare it deserves. Daum is kind of comparable to Microsoft in that it was first on the scene when the internet first became well-known in the 90s, and for a while it was the site to go to. It was eventually replaced by Naver as the number one search engine and portal. This time though they’ve beaten their competitors to the punch by investing a ton of money to drive around Seoul and Gyeonggi-do (the province surrounding the capital city) and create their version of Street View, which they call Road View (로드뷰). Here’s what it looks like:

This is an intersection by COEX (an international convention centre) and a temple known as Bongeun-sa, where all the friendly cats are. The interface is all in Korean though so I’ll explain how to use it (it’s almost the same).

From its early days in 1990s, the Korean Web has been the Web of immediacy, an ideal space for the restless young Koreans searching for an instant gratification with the help of their online peers. Naver, Daum and other key portals in Korea fostered the such trends by combining news and search box in their main page and soon growing as a single destination for the national conversation. Lastly, they topped them off with a display of the real-time beat of hot search keywords, maintaining them as one of the most prominent features for years, as it was the useful index for users to follow the hot conversation of the day. Naver has even released an iPhone app of its hot keyword service.

Funny thing is, many news media, hyper-sensitive about incoming search traffic from portals, has dutifully followed the hot search keywords up to the minute, generating relevant articles that include those keywords, and thus attracting bulk search traffic. Sometimes even news sites that pursue the quality journalism jumped on the bandwagon of keyword hunting, defending their action that the very fact Netizens are buzzing about some issues is good enough to warrant some follow-up stories.

It was a vicious cycle in the Web of immediacy, as the portal’s news content galvanized users to conduct a series of spontaneous online searches around the day’s hot keywords. And that in turn triggered news media to generate more articles about the issues, resulting in the growing dominance of the real-time Web among Koreans.

David Gugerli a historian specialized in the philosophy of science gave a lecture on the history of databases and of data management as a signifying practice. In a Deleuzian fashion, he states, knowledge operates in distributed networks. The world is a database and database management systems are shaping our world. It is a very big market (think IBM, Oracle and Microsoft) with a high level of client lock-in where people are very dependent on their data management systems. Before however (in old databases) data was structured in a hierarchical tree-system. In this way the structure of the database determined which questions could be asked. With the coming of the search and query language every possible combination of entries could be interpreted based on recombination and relation. This meant that interpretation of data became independent of the data structure and place. These new systems were highly efficient and made for new and unexpected questions. They were also more narrative based. Gugerli compares this rise of the relational database model with the rise of critical thinking in the 60’s. Critical thinkers like Barthes, Derrida and Foucault found that a literary work could be seen as a machine that can deliver interpretations. It is a galaxy of signifiers, it has no beginning and we can gain access to it in different ways, none of which is authorative. The interpretation of the text cannot be determined by its author, the interpretations the reader produces when reading are part of its meaning. These traits can also be seen in the development of database concepts: the cultural consequences of these changes are stupendous, according to Gugerli. They do not only influence the relation between author and text but effect any form of information processing in every format. This also has big societal consequences for it has changed our information processing and caused major changes in software structure. The search society and its idea of recombination operates in real time. This requires continued change management, Gugerli concludes, a permanent fluctuation of its composition, of its practices of search and query, which shows the importance of the underlying (relational) database system. The full text of Gugerli’s talk can be downloaded here

Matthew Fuller took a closer look in his talk at the alternative modalities of search and how to develop them. He states that search engines have a morphology, a scheme that generates body, they have different internal structures. Search engines can be seen as cultural machines, they connect information and knowledge. Fuller states that since the rationalization of culture is impossible, this explains the noisiness and the inaccuracy of search engines. Search engines also focus on the analysis of users and the identification of situations. This is an even more abstract process than mere personalization, where the user is not individuated but recognized as a force that produces information. As Fuller states, we need to think on the basis of populations of data producing subjects instead of on the basis of individuals. We need to focus on the dynamics and conditions of search engines. Fuller goes on to discuss different kind of search engines, in order to delve deeper into the morphology of search. Viewzi for instance adopted the aesthetics of the iPhone into a search engine, it makes maps of images and lets you see if they are linked in any way. Oamos views information search as an experience. It is not a full search engine but it uses results from a certain amount of search engines and it looks at relational information. Kartoo and Liveplasma are examples of network visualization interfaces. DAUM, NAVER (both Korean) and Directionless.info of context driven engines. With these examples Fuller gave a good overview of the multiple possibilities for search and the different possibilities for interface design. Fuller states that delving deeper into the complexities of the web and its users and reflecting this in its design is the challenge for the next wave of search.

Lev Manovich’s lecture focused on how we can learn from Google. How can the search engine design serve as a new methodology for cultural analysis, or, how can we use Google as a tool for cultural analysis? First of all he stresses it is important to look at the size of our data. Most of the time cultural analysis focuses on a very small sample of cultural production, where a search engine uses every accessible web document (and now Google also indexes Twitter and Facebook) offering much larger scale for analysis of contemporary cultural production and interpretation. Secondly, when it comes to categorization, mostly cultural objects are placed into small numbers of genres/categories. A search engine can make an analysis of each web document to generate its unique description (using 200+ signals). As Manovich states, although significant research in automatic classification of web pages into genres exist, Google does not use it, because it wants to give you any page that is most relevant. Thirdly, when it concerns “links”, traditionally cultural criticism gives an analysis of a small number of selective links (“influences”) between a given object/person and others. A search engine on the other hand gives a systematic consideration of all (explicitly defined) links between a given web page and other pages. Fourthly, Manovich states that what is very important in cultural production, is that it builds on the old, on old features (characteristics, attributes, dimensions), or a small number of subjectively selected features different from text to text. A search engine focuses on lots of features and can take the interaction with the user into consideration. Where traditionally in cultural analysis theoretical work does focus on reception, in practice it gives more an analysis of documents as experienced by a critic. Web analytics on the other hand can give a good analysis of user interactions with a web site. As Manovich states, cultural analysis looks from one critique, and is thus is not empirical, as it does not look at the user interactions with cultural products. Next, when it comes to zoomability, in cultural analysis the focus is mostly on a document, a creator, group, period or paradigm with highly uneven coverage. With Google search technology or Google trends the search patterns of billions of people over a number of years can be analyzed. Think of the possibilities of Google Earth and Google Street View. As Manovich states, software developed by the digital culture industry and also by the academy often contains innovative theoretical ideas about culture which are embedded in its design (i.e. what software does to calculate the results). However this design is often used to support an outdated (i.e. 20th century) understanding of culture when it comes to search (looking for particular members of a set) or classification of culture into a small number of genres. Manovich understands the search technology as a new paradigm for cultural analysis: what if we take the principles from search engines, web analytics and Google trends (interactive visualization of patterns), and imbed them in new software tools for analysis? In this way we can extract features from each document in a set, instead of using the features to classify documents into a few classes, and we can visualize the patterns and the variability across a set. As Manovich concludes, the old search paradigm is based on knowing what you want to find, where the new search paradigm is based on finding relations. Manovich ends by asking: might Google take over the Humanities?

Alessandro Ludovico and Christophe Bruno both focused on the potential search engines offer to art, by both using search engines and by reflecting upon them (in an often critical and playful manner). Ludovico discusses his project Google Will Eat Itself (GWEI), in which he established a fake website about online marketing, and subscribed to the Google AddSense program, which lets you publish Google textual adds on your web site. After opening a bank account for the project, they developed a special software which would generate an unique IP address, simulating a user, and would make automatic clicks on the adds by Google. As Ludovico explained, it would be impossible to define a fraudulent click from a true one, making it hard for Google to ban them. Ludovico sees GWEI as a conceptual artwork, as a scientific experiment. Through this project they got a lot of attention in the media. As Ludovico concluded, the worst enemy of a giant is not another giant, it is a parasite. If enough parasites would suck out enough money, it will suck the giant empty. Ludovico wants to dissect, decode and expose these giants through conceptual artworks and theories in order to create cultural anti-bodies. Christophe Bruno also discussed some of his recent artworks or Google hacks. He mentioned Ephiphanies, a Google Poetry hack which he developed (based on Joyce’s walks in Dublin during which Joyce would collect random sentences overheard). Keywords typed into the Ephiphanies machine will collect random sentences from Google and send them back to the program to form a new poetical structure. Poet Ton van ’t Hof gave a short introduction on Flarf, a cut-up technique using Google search results, rearranging them to make a new text. As Van ‘t Hof explains, these kind of cut-up techniques are not new, as they have been used before in the 1920s by the Surrealists, and in the 50s and 60s by for instance Burroughs. As Van ‘t Hof states, its first practitioners practiced an aesthetic dedicated to ‘the exploration of the inappropriate in all its guises’. The idea behind Flarf is to mine the internet with odd search terms and then to distill them into often hilarious and sometimes disturbing poems, or plays on other texts. According to Van ‘t Hof the genre is very popular now and would not have existed without Internet or without Google.

Pertanyaannya..

Siapa sih member DBSK yang fanbase/fanclubnya paling rame dikunjungi?

Jawabannya under the cut yaa..^^!

* YG and JYP ahjushi make this happen!
* KwonMin line to make comeback this year.. aja aja [ in korea the official couple is g-ye .. who are known as KwonMin]
** yes.. last year was a conspiracy!! Only Daesung and Yeeun performance gave me satisfaction. [ all the other couples were tossed around]
* You think I would be sick of them already, but I still want more.
* 2PM and 2NE1 are good groups but the magic was not recaptured.

Her takıma karşı saygı duyuyoruz.

Weiter demnächst in Teil 2…

2PM’s first full album “1:59PM is out!! I decided to do the romanization for their title

2PM’s first full album “1:59PM is out!! I decided to do the romanization for their title track, “Heartbeat” so PLEASE give me (wannabefob) credit. I’m accepting recommendations too!! If you really like a song that you’d like me to write the romanization for, please leave a comment.

I won’t do the romanization for all the songs (I said that I would earlier) because I found that others already did the romanization for all the songs on “1:59PM”. I found that it would be a waste of my time. If you really want me to do the romanization, comment your requests — it can also be other songs that aren’t 2PM-related. Also, before writing this, I already did the romanization for “Gimme the Light” and “My Heart” so check them out!

Translation thanks to TYPICALpocky2@ youtube:

Can you feel my heartbeat

Heartbeat Heartbeat
The heart that you’ve stomped on is still beating and even so towards you.
No matter how hard I try, no matter how many new people I meet, and again and again why I turn around and think of you
I’m going to stop, I want to stop, though I calm and calm myself again its no use, my heart is broken, why?

Why am I still doing these stupid things, my mind seems to understand but why my heart is still acting on its own?
I grabbed you and I still cant let go, It still seems like youre by my side, I cant believe in goodbyes

No matter who I meet, I cant open a part of my heart and I keep leaving a space for you
There’s not reason for you to come back, but my heart keeps believing that you might come back, why won’t it listen?

Listen to my Heartbeat. Its beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. Its waiting for you.
It still doesnt know its over, I dont understand why its like this.
Listen to my Heartbeat. Its beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. Its waiting for you.
I still hurt at the thought of you, I think of you every time my heart beats.

I have to forget, I have to forget to live, I have to erase you , if not I’ll die.
Stop trying to get her back. She aint coming.
Shes gone, gotta be moving on. She left and shes not coming back, the girl isnt thinking of you.

She hasn’t a clue that I’m waiting and she’s living well, shes already forgotten about me, completed erased.
Why can’t I do that?

Listen to my Heartbeat. Its beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. Its waiting for you.
It still doesnt know its over, I dont understand why its like this.
Listen to my Heartbeat. Its beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. Its waiting for you.
I still hurt at the thought of you, I think you ever time my heart beats.

My heart is beating Faster and faster (*4)

This time, I found the lyrics on Daum Music which seems faster and better than Cyworld. I’ll probably be using Daum’s lyrics now.

Can you feel my heartbeat

Heartbeat Heartbeat
Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s waiting for you.
Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s waiting for you.
Stop trying to get her back. She ain’t coming
She’s gone, gotta be moving on.
Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s waiting for you.
Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s beating for you. Listen to my Heartbeat. It’s waiting for you.
My heart is beating Faster and faster (*4)

Note: For some words, the sound is g/k so I picked the one I thought was correct. This is also the same for r/l, b/p and others. I also put dashes in between each syllable so that it would be easier for you guys to follow along with the song & sing along if you wish. (Trust me, I know how it feels to try to sing a song with the whole word all smushed together.)

If you’re a Soshified member, you probably have noticed that now SSF has more than 50,000 registered members. That number means Soshified is now the largest international site for any specific K-pop artist. Congrats to Soshified, btw. But how about the Korean fan-cafes?

It’s been revealed that SNSD’s fan-cafes in two most popular Korea portal sites, Daum and Naver, are both the biggest among fan-cafes for idol girl groups. What surprised me is, apparently their Daum fan-cafe is now even bigger than most of Korean boy bands’ out there. Number wise they are only losing to DBSK’s and Big Bang’s! :O Seems like I have underestimate the number of Korean S♥ne…

Daum fan-cafes might have free registration and what not, but it’s not easy to make an account in Daum fan-cafes. To register to Daum you need to have Korean social security number, Hanmail account, and they will even make a phone-call confirmation to verify the account. So I guess the number of Daum fan-cafes’ members can be a pretty legit way to see how many fans each idol groups has. Here’s the top 5 largest Daum fancafes of Korean Idol Groups:

It’s weird that almost all the number, with the exception of SNSD’s, are decreasing. I remember DBSK’s fan-cafe, Yuaerubi, used to have the famous 800,000 registered members… but now it “only” has about 790,000 members.

Powerful search engines, new displays recently launched by local Net portals

Korea’s Web portals are getting smarter by the day, with operators competing to introduce tools that anticipate what the user is “really” looking for.

This month, on its portal Nate, SK Communications introduced a semantic search system, which uses networks of relationships between terms – rather than simply on the number of times a term appears or the number of hits a certain site receives – to determine the intention of the user and generate accurate results.

Nate is the first Korean portal to feature the method.

Type in the name of actor Lee Min-ho, and the new Nate search gives results that include key information such as Lee’s height and weight, his TV drama roles and his favorite food. The user can then click on these narrower categories for other relevant information via different online documents or blogs.

Nate’s “issue time line” is another smart search function, which lists the amount of information about a certain keyword that has been made available online over the past year. For example, if a celebrity was caught up in a dating scandal, the search engine would display a bar graph of related information about the celebrity since the story broke, including how it progressed over time.

“Semantic search is rising as the next-generation paradigm for online search overseas. With this advanced technology, we intend to rise above the traditional portal market,” said In Chi-bum, public relations head at SK Communications.

But Naver has introduced its own new methods to keep its No. 1 spot in the Korean portal market. It recently started offering a “collection ranking” service, which lists search results that have the highest “satisfaction ratings” from users first.

Unlike other user ranking systems, which display search results based on the most clicks, Naver’s method focuses on how happy users were with their experience.

“This service is a state-of-the-art search technology that even top global portals are still in the process of perfecting,” said Lee Jun-ho, chief operating officer at NHN, which operates Naver.

Naver also recently began offering automatic spelling correction, to find the right results even if the user makes a mistake in typing in the term.

Daum, Korea’s second biggest portal, has upgraded its keyword searches that usually take place on a daily basis to make them easier to use. When a user types in words related to the horoscope, weather, currency, music or another topic, the portal includes additional information.

For example, type in “weather in Gangnam district,” and the portal will show the weather in southern Seoul today, tomorrow and the following day. Type in “music for a rainy day,” and Daum lists various tunes in that category.

Meanwhile, Yahoo Korea has been emphasizing its blog search, which breaks market boundaries to offer results from major blogs on Naver, Daum and other local portals, listed in order of quality. Award-winning blogs are placed right at the top of the list.

Daum Communications, the operator of Korea’s No. 2 Web portal, posted record quarterly sales and tripled its earnings on-year from July to September on revenue from advertisements and its online shopping unit.

The company’s sales climbed 5.1 percent on-year to 61.4 billion won ($51.4 million) in the third quarter, breaking the 60 billion won mark for the first time. Operating profit rose 17.1 percent on-year to 13.5 billion won, while net profit jumped more than threefold compared to the same quarter last year, to 13.6 billion won. Daum’s net profit during the third quarter of 2008 was 4 billion won.

“Our third quarter earnings were a direct result of our services geared toward users’ everyday life, and related advertisements, including banner sales and sponsor links,” the company said in an official statement, adding that it saw a rapid rise in visitor traffic to its main Web site Daum.net.

Sales at the company’s shopping division, which includes “Shoppinghow,” featuring price comparisons from different shopping sites, rose 159.4 percent on-year during the July to September period to a total of 13.3 billion won.

Daum also stated that even though the third quarter is traditionally the off-season for online advertisements, their search ad sales rose to 27.9 billion won, 0.7 percent higher than the same period in 2008, due to companies paying higher costs per-click.

Her zaman bize büyük destek veren muhteşem taraftarımızın itici gücüyle, 90 dakikanın sonunda gülen taraf olmak istiyoruz” açıklamasını yaptı.

Roberto Carlos’a çok dikkat edeceksiniz.
