(probably why they sound so much like them). Thier first album, Dreaming Little Things was released earlier this year and is a very solid album. Provided will be my favorite song, Little by Little which is a very nice song that will give you a good feel of this band. Also recieved this free live album that they put together from their current tour with O.A.R. which features 11 songs, 2 of which feature O.A.R. ENJOY!

After basically refusing to review the latest Dave Matthews Band disc, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux

After basically refusing to review the latest Dave Matthews Band disc, Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King, I wrote this review elsewhere, which still doesn’t quite represent my feelings on the album. I was working within some space/convention requirements, and because I had to write in the third person, I couldn’t quite gush in the way that I wanted to.

Excuses aside, I still find it hard to be completely objective about Big Whiskey, but I’ll just go out on a limb and say that this is the best DMB disc since Busted Stuff (and for those who don’t count Busted Stuff, as it’s the reworking of the leaked Lillywhite Sessions, then it’s the best thing since Before These Crowded Streets). To me, one of the best things about the disc is that it has “flow,” which is a term that’s probably better applied to rivers and menstrual cycles than to anything artistic. But here’s what I mean: the songs transition smoothly into one another without jarring the listener. Everything makes sense from beginning to end, like a tightly developed narrative, and that’s an achievement in the age of the single-tune download. The only possible exception might be “Alligator Pie” which, with its down-home flavor and New Orleans references, sort of takes me right out of the album after the surreal “Squirm” and before the nasty get-down of “Seven.” I think bonus track “#27″ (available on a bonus disc with a special edition of the disc) might have worked better here, as it’s a downbeat-yet-hopeful song about life’s frustrations dissapating with the love of a good woman. But all in all, I’m still enjoying the album six months later, and I think it’s a great send-off to the late LeRoi Moore.

And maybe between my not-review, my sort-of review, and my ramblings here, I’ve written a full review of this thing.

There was a time, round about the beginning of my senior year in college, when I was quite in love with the Dave Matthews Band. I enjoyed the Dave Matthews, I enjoyed the Hootie and the Blowfish, I enjoyed the Blues Traveler – all those kinds of jangly, poppy, only-ever-so-slightly-alt-country-rock bands. They were something really different at the time, remember? It was as if — at least on the Midwestern airwaves that were filling my head — some new wave of gently rockin’, cool music was infiltrating the sickening onslaught of saccharine pop. AND IT WAS GOOD.

Of course, this new wave quickly turned into a flood, and these same bands that had been so refreshing began to feel so tired and derivative. Was it just me? I feel like one day I was blasting “Ants Marching” out the windows of my third-floor dorm room, and the next I was moaning every time a DMB song came on the radio. I still can’t bear to hear that squeaky voice, or Hootie’s, or John Popper’s. Blech.

I suppose this is the mark of a fickle heart. Or at least one that gets caught up in the excitement of the next big thing, only to realize, before too much time has passed, that it’s not really her thing. I dunno.

But OH, I hear those songs from Under the Table and Dreaming, or Cracked Rear View, or Four, and I am transported to the latter days of my college career, so my distaste for the tunes is tempered by my love for the times.

Also my annoyance at Dave himself was tempered this weekend by this, which you’ll have to click to, as I am for some reason unable to embed the video: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/video/clips/the-mellow-show/1178424/

There are 36.2 million Americans, and more than a billion people worldwide who do not get enough to eat. WHY is a non-profit charity working to end world hunger and poverty. The annual Hungerthon is a radio broadcast each Thanksgiving to bring awareness and appeal for donations (of dollars and/or hours of your volunteering time) to help feed the world. “Imagine There’s No Hunger” is the theme (approved by Yoko Ono who generously allowed John Lennon’s lyric and images to stand for the project). Other giants of the music industry are on board and have donated items for auction to raise money. Some of the big ticket items are: *A signed photograph from Henry Diltz, courtesy of the Morrison Hotel Gallery.
* A signed guitar from Sarah McLachlan, courtesy of Nettwerk Management.
* A signed deluxe box set from The Dave Matthews Band, courtesy of Red Light Management.
* A signed guitar from The Counting Crows, courtesy of The Artists Organization.
* An autographed photo and signed copy of the new album ‘Battle Studies’ from John Mayer, courtesy of Mick Management.
* A signed special edition of “21st Century Breakdown,” courtesy of Green Day.

Bid on these items, make a general donation, and volunteer some time for other events and spreading the word.

It is what being thankful is all about.

The “My Top 3″ series is your chance to get to know some of my personal favorites. Today, on a lighter note, I share my favorite 3 bands. These are not necessarily my vote for the BEST bands of all time. I would have to place The Beatles, Led Zepellin, Elvis Presley and many others on that list. These are my personal favorites who have had the greatest impact on my musical tastes — primarily during my high school and college days where I bought a lot of CDs, played a lot of guitar and went to a lot of concerts. Here they are:

#3 – U2. Bono, the Edge and the other boys from Ireland were an acquired taste for me. It didn’t make sense why I like them at the time. I think I was impressed with their longevity, classiness, unique sound driven by the Edge’s “helicopter guitar” as we called it. Over the years I would grow to love their convictions as artists and Bono’s growing forthrightness about his Christian faith. These guys have been in the spotlight for decades and have avoided the scandals and illicit behavior that brings the downfall of so many pop stars. I was fortunate to score free tickets to their Popmart Tour in 1998. It was fun to be part of the hype and see them live on stage — but the Metro Dome was the worst concert venue possible for sound quality. Just awful. I’m impressed with their latest albums and they keep growing more mature and classy as entertainers. They are the real deal and easily fall in my top 10 bands of all time.

#2 – Dave Matthews Band. Ok, DMB isn’t in the same category as U2. They are not legendary yet — though time will tell if they can reach those heights. They are in my top 3 because of the sheer enjoyment they brought to my passion for music as I was learning the guitar in high school. I am proud to be one of the original discoverers of DMB before they made it big. I swear I found them before they MTV did. There was nothing like Under the Table and Dreaming out there in the early 90s. Where did this alternative rock band with South African acoustic guitarist, jazz saxophone/clarinet, crazy violinist and world-class jazz drummer come from? John Popper from Blues Traveler played harmonica on their first radio hit single “What Would You Say” and because they were hitting it big at the same time I actually mixed the two bands up for a week or so. Oops.

But I will go on record saying that their second album release Crash is by far my favorite album of all time. Seriously. From start to finish, there is some amazing musicianship taking place. As a beginning guitarist and lover of acoustic, rhythmic guitar riffs I couldn’t get enough of tacks like Two Step, Lie in Our Graves, Tripping Billies, What Would You Say and perhaps the best 15 minutes of continuous music #41 flowing into Say Goodbye. I liked their 3rd album Before These Crowded Streets but slowly grew disappointed from that point forward as they seemed to grow more mainstream, more studio-ized and less of a grassroots jam-band. Dave’s signature acoustic riffs became more and more electric and saw them as “selling out” to the mainstream. I haven’t listened to DMB for years now. But I enjoy putting on Crash every now and then to take me back to many good memories of high school.

#1 – R.E.M. I was in 8th grade. I loved music and my good friend and I were invited to our first major stadium concert with a group of older students. I still don’t quite know how we were invited. But we saw R.E.M.’s Monster Tour at Target Center. Overnight I became a fanatic. The concert was epic. Classic hits like Stand, End of the World As We Know It, One I Love, Man on the Moon, Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion and others were combined with the edgy, distorted new sound of Monster. It was the best of all worlds. Clean acoustic and electric, then some heavy buzzing distorted rock, then some ballads with pop harmonies and Michael Stipe’s unmistakable vocals filling the stadium. But the concert didn’t even capture the sound that would eventually win me over as a crazy R.E.M. groupie. A local radio station (KQRS?) was playing their entire library of R.E.M from A-Z for that whole day and night. I was immediately hooked on the lesser known early 80s R.E.M. material. My parents belonged to BMG music club and I immediately ordered their first 10 albums for my 15th birthday. Still one of my best gifts ever!

Many people today still have never been treated to their early sound of their 1981 5-song single debut Chronic Town with “Gardening at Night” followed by first full release”Murmur” (1983) featuring hit song “Radio Free Europe” and then Reckoning (1984) with “Don’t Go Back to Rocktown” and “So. Central Rain”. It’s hard to describe this early 80s hipster rock sound carried by Stipe and Mills’ Beach Boys inspired harmonies and Peter Buck’s hypnotic finger picking on clean electric. It’s clean. It’s catchy. And you can’t help tap your foot and bob your head. It’s clearly original and to this day is hard to classify. I was told some call R.E.M. the Father’s of Alternative Rock — back in the day before it was a definable genre but a label give to a sound that just couldn’t be easily pinned down. Through the years they have remained difficult to define and always innovative and changing. I thoroughly enjoyed all of their albums (each a unique listening experience with many shifts in sound through the decades) up until drummer Bill Barry left the band around 1997. I have not enjoyed any of their albums since then — though I finally heard a taste of the old R.E.M. in their 2008 “Accelerate” release.

At the end of the day, R.E.M. is still my favorite band of all time — and one of America’s top 10. I have recently begun collecting their vinyl collection for fun. Today their 1981 “Chronic Town” showed up in the mail. Check out a video from a very young R.E.M playing first song receiving radio play “Gardening at Night.” Does it get any better than this?!

A MUST HAVE!!!

Virginia Coalition is probably the best jam band that has yet to hit mainstream. If you enjoy O.A.R. or Dave Matthews Band at all you will love Virginia Coalition. They have opened for O.A.R. before and I would go as far as to say that they are even better live than O.A.R. They met in the early 1990’s and released their first album 1998. The album I chose to review is probably my favorite live album (quite a compliment coming from a DMB enthusiast). It is a two disc album that was recorded live in Washington D.C. and the quality is amazing and the best part is it actually sounds better than their studio CDs! The music is amazing. The band consists of

Andrew Poliakoff – lead vocals, guitar, percussion

Paul Ottinger – keyboards, percussion, vocals, bass guitar, guitar,

Jarrett Nicolay – bass guitar, banjo, guitar, vocals

Adam Dawson – drums

They are the definition of a jam band with lyrics that doesn’t always make the most sense but with a great use of percussion, key boards, instruments, and vocals. The songs are almost all fun and relaxed. The best part about the album is it includes songs from all of their previous albums, and arguably the best ones from them. The hit song “Green and Grey” is the best song on the album. It has the best jams, and is the most fun song on the album. The album consists of a cover of “Lean on Me” which is very well done, more instrumental involvement than the original version. Other songs to look for on the album are “Places People” “Mason Dixon”and “Walk to Work”.

I recommend visiting their website to see if they are coming near you because they typically perform at small values and tickets are cheap. I was fortunate enough to see them at the beginning of the summer of 2008 and tickets were 20 dollars and I got to stand front row. It was one of, if not the, most fun concerts I have been to. The album does a great job catching the energy that is present at their concerts.

Overall: 8/10 A MUST HAVE ON YOUR IPOD!!!

Best Songs: “Green and Grey” “Lean on Me” “Walk to Work” “Places People”

Similar Artists: O.A.R., Dave Matthews Band, Pat McGee Band

One Down Fall: Some songs sound the same and some jams are mediocre

Unfortunately there are no good quality videos or streams of this album, but I highly recommend the download on itunes, and if you only get one song definitely get “Green and Grey”

This is one of my favorite songs. I love the way the writer uses a color to help illustrate a depressed woman. In the song, the writer portrays a woman who has no self-esteem even though she has a lot of abilities. This suppression has caused her to fall victim to extreme sadness to the point she feels like she has reached the end of the world and is possibly on the verge of losing her own sanity.

I listen to this song when I need to be reminded of what can happen if I let myself fall into a people pleaser pattern…I could lose all sense of confidence in myself and consequently become depressed. While I feel sorry for the woman in the song, I am able to relate to her in certain situations.

Lyrics:

Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street.
She thinks, “Hey, how did I come to this?”
I dream myself a thousand times around the world
But I can’t get out of this place.
There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’ll do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart
How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears it doesn’t listen
There’s still a hope in her it might
She says “I pray oh But they fall on deaf ears,
am I supposed to take it on myself?
To get out of this place? “
Oh There’s a loneliness inside her
And she’ll do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart
There’s a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
Oh It’d take the work out of the courage
But she says “Please
There’s a crazy man that’s creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street
and the end of the world.”
Oh there’s an emptiness inside her
And she’ll do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It’s more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her
Using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together – to grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To Grey

Ever wonder what Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge would talk about in a roundtable discussion?

Well, your curiosity will soon be appeased! A new documentary, titled It Might Get Loud, will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

According to a press release, “The movie revolves around a singular day when Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White first met and sat down together to share their stories, teach, and play.” The doc “captures the guitarists as each explains and demonstrates how he changed the sound of the electric guitar to suit his own distinctive musical style.”

Directed by David Guggenheim, It Might Get Loud tells the stories of the three guitarists and their journeys as they developed how they played the electric guitar to create their own trademark style.

New music from each musician is played throughout the documentary, and it features scenes in London, Nashville and Dublin.

Each artist cites his main influences, discussing albums from The Edge’s Sex Pistols record to Flat Duo Jets’ Go-Go Harlem Baby, which was a major influence on Jack White.

Should be interesting!

In other news, Dave Matthews Band saxophonist LeRoi Moore passed away yesterday from complications stemming from an ATV accident in June. As we get ready to induct more musicians into the Mountain Hall of Fame, we cannot help but mourn the loss of one of the first Hall of Fame inductees. The rest of the band has proceded with their summer tour, and we certainly wish them well.

If you didn’t get a chance to be at Marymoor Park for our Mountain Music Fest last week, be sure to check back at my blog – I’ll be posting pictures soon!

Sitting still as stone watching- watching
People walking by you wondering why
No one ever stops to talk or thinks about it
-if they ever did

What if God shuffled by?
One day we might see
Doing not a thing
Breathing just to breathe
We might find some reason
But rushing around seems
What’s wrong with the world
Don’t lose the dreams inside your head
They’ll only be there ’til you’re dead
Dream

Lying on the roof counting
The suns that fill the sky I wonder is
Someone in the heavens
Looking back down on me -I’ll never know
So much space to believe
Funny when you’re small
The moon follows the car
Doesn’t no one but you see
Hey, the moon is chasing me
I worried if I looked away she’d be gone
Don’t lose the dreams inside your head
They’ll only be there ’til you’re dead
Dream

Walking through the wood
No cares in the world
The world SHE’S come to play
She’s all mine just for a day
There’s not a moment to lose in the game
Don’t let the troubles in your head
Steal too much time you’ll soon be dead
So play

All fall down
It won’t be so long now
Out of the darkness comes light like a flash
You think you can, you think you can
Sometimes that is the problem
Dream little darling, dream
Spinning on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb
But everyday should be a good day to die
Oh, all fall down
It won’t be too long now
Every fire dies

I find it hard to explain how I got here
I think I can, I think I can
And then again, I will falter
Dream

Oh I think I can
I think I can, I think I can
I think I can, I think I can
Dream little darling dream
Spining on the wind
The leaf fell from the limb

I was listening to the Dave Matthews Band’s new album “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux Kin

I was listening to the Dave Matthews Band’s new album “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King” recently and noticed that one of the songs is called “Spaceman.” Hey, that’s the title of a song on The Killers’ “Day & Age,” I thought.

As these sorts of things are wont to do, pretty soon this observation led to the idea of imagining a space-themed album. I started jotting down the space-themed songs I was aware of, coming up with seven.

I talked to my brother a few minutes ago. He hosts a radio show on a college radio station and tends to like to theme his shows. I asked him if he knew any space-themed songs and got him hooked on finding songs for me. He rattled off a bunch, including many I hadn’t heard of, and one that should have been totally obvious to me.

He suggested I do some research on allmusic.com, which I did, plus I googled “songs about space.” Turns out there’s been quite a bit of work done on listing space-themed songs. An especially good list is at HobbySpace.com.

Here’s my list for an album I’d call “Out of This World”:

1. “Space Oddity” by David Bowie

2. “Major Tom (Coming Home)” by Peter Schilling

3. “Spaceman” by The Killers

4. “Spaceman” by Dave Matthews Band (the Spaceman only gets a mention)

5. “Satellite” by Dave Matthews Band

6. “Astronaut Dreams” by Peter Mayer

7. “Camping by the Sun” by Peter Mayer

8. “One More Circle” by Peter Mayer

9. “Planet Earth” by Duran Duran (This is the song that should have been obvious to me ’cause I was a Duranie in my youth.)

10. “Rocket Man” by Elton John

11. “Interplanet Janet” by Lynn Ahrens (Schoolhouse Rock rocks!)

12. “Rapture” by Blondie

Got any favorite space-themed songs you’d add to this album? (It could be a multiple disc set, you know.)

בפינת בקשיש”ק גילינו לכם, למקרה שלא ידעתם, שש-Crying in the rain הוא למעשה לא של A-ha במקור, אלא של The Everlly Brother. ד”א בדרך זו אנו נפרדים מ-A-ha שהתפרקו מתישהו בשבוע שעבר.

Korn שילבו את שלושת החלקים של Another Brick in the wall של פינק פלויד ביחד עם Goodbye Cruel World גם הוא מאלבום החומה, לשבע דקות של שיכרון חושים.

ואחרונים חביבים היו אלה Dave Matthews Band בביצוע בהופעה חיה של Time of the season של הזומביס.

עד ליום שלישי.. נשתמע

At just over 8 minutes for the album version (there is a 4.5 minute radio cut), this is, I believe the longest song on the list – and probably the most “flute-heavy.” It’s long, jazzy, and with its super-relaxed vibe, probably the definitive Dave Matthews song. I was just barely able to squeak it onto the list; therefore there wasn’t room for its Before These Crowded Streets CD-sibling “Stay (Wasting Time)” – even though it’s easily one of my DMB favorites.
