↑ Mind Never Rests, por Manu Pombrol.

just finished reading two amazing books. first off, part six in the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy: and another thing…. it was written by eoin colfer, the dude who wrote artemis fowl, and he did a stellar job at keeping up the comedy.

also sat down and finished the graveyard book by neil gaiman in a day as well. it’s about a boy named nobody who lives in a graveyard, raised by various ghosts and goes on numerous adventures. gaiman totally works his magic craft with it, making it both a childrens book and an adult novel, with awesome art from dave mckean.

gaiman at his best

last but not least, i finally finished up borderlands for the xbox 360, by 2k games and gearbox. a really strong and funny fps mixed with role-playing elements. to do everything it only took about 20 to 25 hours and it was totally worth it. a great amount of fun, like a fallout and diablo mix.

enjoyed it thoroughly

Never read a graphic novel before? Haven’t read a comic book in years?

Here’s some brand new stuff that came out the week of October 28 that I think is worth a look-see for someone with little to no history with comics. That means you should be able to pick any of these up cold without having read anything else. So take a look and see if something doesn’t grab your fancy. If so, follow the publisher links or Amazon.com links to buy yourself a copy. Or, head to your local friendly comic book shop.

Disclaimer: For the most part, I have not read these yet, so I can’t vouch for their quality. But, from what I’ve heard and seen, odds are good they just might appeal to you.

Pinocchio: Vampire Slayer – $10.95
By Dustin Higgins & Van Jensen
128 pages; published by Slave Labor Graphics; available at Amazon.com

After seeing Geppetto die at the hands of vampires, Pinocchio swears revenge in this darkly funny graphic novel. As the vampires plot the enslavement of mankind, only a one-puppet army stands in their way. But will a wooden boy and his endless supply of stakes – courtesy of plenty of lies and his elongating nose – be enough to save the day?

Funny concept! Here’s a 5-page preview and a different 7-page preview. And a trailer:

Looks like a pretty funny execution of a funny concept. If you’re into humor/horror, this could be the comic you’ve been waiting to read for your whole entire life.

Casper and the Spectrals #1 – $2.99
By Todd DeZago & Pedro Delgado
published by Ardden Entertainment

Just in time for Casper’s 60th anniversary, Ardden Entertainment proudly debuts Casper And The Supernaturals, an all-new take on the world’s most famous ghost and his two friends, Wendy the Witch and Hot Stuff! There is a city within New York City known as Spooky Town, but most humans are unable to see it.

Within this city live the Supernaturals, the ghosts, goblins, demons and witches of the world. When an ancient entity known only as the Volbragg threatens both New York and Spooky Town, Casper and his friends are forced to band together and defeat an unimaginable evil!

THIS ISN’T YOUR FATHER’S CASPER THE FRIENDLY GHOST! He’s EXTREME! I kid. Seriously, this looks like a cute revitalization of this classic character. If you don’t know who Casper is, don’t worry about it. This is a totally fresh start. No prior knowledge needed.

By Sergio Aragonés
Published by Bongo Comics

Bongo Comics welcomes Sergio Aragones as a new regular featured writer and artist in the pages of Bart Simpson Comics!

First, Sergio starts with a story that pits the Simpsons against our national security in ‘The Simpsons Project,’ and then he debuts his regular bi-monthly feature entitled, ‘Maggie’s Crib.’

Get ready when the world’s fastest cartoonist meets the world’s brashest boy! And as if that wasn’t enough, Sergio also provides the cover to Bart’s fabulous 50th issue!

Somebody tell Bongo Comics to get a website. Come on. It’s almost 2010.

That embarrassment aside, Sergio Aragonés is a fantastic cartoonist (and has a website). Every year at San Diego Comic-Con, he does this hilarious must-see panel called Quick Draw where he, super-cartoonist Scott Shaw! and a guest cartoonist try to out-draw each other. It’s tons of fun, very spontaneous and immensely creative. Sergio drew for MAD Magazine for years (heck, he probably still does) and also does his own comic Groo The Wanderer. Seeing him handle The Simpsons will be a big treat.

By Sid Jacobson & Ernie Colón

A symbol of counterculture worldwide, Ernesto “Che” Guevara is one of the most, if not the most, recognizable and influential revolutionary figures of the twentieth century. From the pages of history textbooks to silk-screened T-shirts at Urban Outfitters, his mythologized face is positively unavoidable. But what, exactly, does this glorified image stand for?

During his life, and perhaps even more since his death, Che has elicited controversy and wildly divergent opinions as to who he was and what he represented. In Che: A Graphic Biography, Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón—the graphic duo who made the 9/11 Commission Report understandable in their bestselling The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation and who most recently explained the ongoing war on terror in After 9/11—have come together again to give a real portrait of Ernesto Guevara de la Serna. Following Che from his fabled motorcycle journeys with Alberto Granado as a young medical student to his eventual execution at the hands of Bolivian soldiers and CIA operatives, Che: A Graphic Biography not only provides a concrete time line of his life but also gives a broader understanding of his beliefs, his legacy, and Latin American politics during the mid-twentieth century.

I will forever love these two creators for doing The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation. I think it was a huge step in comics expanding on their potential. It gives an amazing timeline of events so you can see how things were happening simultaneously, in a way that straight prose never could. It was clear, concise, intelligent. Definitely one of the best comic releases of that year, possibly the decade. I don’t know if this is as significant, but again I applaud what their doing and the skill in which they do it.

By Sid Jacobson & Ernie Colón
114 pages; published by Hudson Street Press; available at Amazon.com

From the bestselling author/illustrator team of The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation comes the truly gory tale of the historical Dracula.

The Dracula myth has sparked a legacy of endlessly entertaining creepy tales. The fictional character, originally penned by Bram Stoker, was inspired by and named after a real-life fiend—Prince Vlad Dracula, the fifteenth-century ruler of Wallachia—a man infamous for massacring and impaling his enemies. In brilliant four-color illustrations, Vlad the Impaler tells the ghastly prince’s life story from his seizure as a boy by the Turkish Sultan, to his love life, to his maniacal attempts to retain power regardless of whose throat he must slit.

From the bestselling writer and illustrator team who brought us The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation—hailed by Stan Lee as “beautifully and compellingly written and illustrated. . . . It will surely set the standard for all future works of contemporary history, graphic or otherwise”—this graphic novel, based on a true story, is replete with gory details of torture tactics. Ideal for readers who made 30 Days of Night and World War Z bestsellers, the combination of riveting legend and blood-and-guts drawings will be an anticipated addition to the graphic novel fan’s library.

Hey, it’s those guys again! Some nicely coordinated release schedules from two separate publishers. Smartly done. This seems a bit darker and more for fun, but should also be an interesting read.

By Bob Dylan, et al.
104 pages; published by W.W. Norton & Company; available at Amazon.com

Rendered in striking, explosive graphic form, many of Bob Dylan’s most famous songs—illustrated as they’ve never been before.

Mesmerized by the power of Bob Dylan’s lyrics and intrigued by the possibilities of translating his powerful, enigmatic personality into art, thirteen leading graphic artists banded together to create this unusual testament to the universality and transcendent vision of an American musical genius. With their vibrant, unexpected colors and dynamic, cinematic imagery, this group has assembled in Bob Dylan Revisited one of the most provocative interpretations of Dylan’s music in decades. Whether illustrating “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Hurricane,” or “Lay, Lady, Lay,” these artists capture the tender emotions, the ineffable sadness, and the romantic overtones of Dylan’s classic songs, at the same time reflecting the moral and political urgency of his music. Each artist’s style surprisingly complements Dylan’s lyrics and offers an irresistible window through which to reconsider one of America’s most enigmatic artists. A deeply respectful and brilliant homage to the extraordinary influence of Bob Dylan.

Love the cover. Here’s the list of songs and the artists interpreting them, according to the publisher’s site:

Contents:
“Blowin in the Wind” interpreted by Thierry Muraty

As far as special effects go, you have to do something pretty spectacular to make me forget about th

As far as special effects go, you have to do something pretty spectacular to make me forget about the story. There has to be something truly magical in the air for me to forgo the usual logical dissection of the plot. That’s where I am with today’s amazing film from the mind of Sandman creators Dave McKean and Neil Gaiman. Mirrormask is a beautiful and achingly mystical story about the trials of youth and maturation set in a fantastic innerscape of the heart, mind and soul. It’s not often a feast for the eyes is so tantalizingly positioned for me, and it makes me both love it all the more for its achievements while hating it for its lackluster script.

We follow young heroine Helena, an emotional, creative young woman whose parents own circus. Not Barnum & Bailey; think more like a more artistic European circus with outlandish clowns and crazy foreboding color schemes. She and her mother and father perform incredible acts of daring-do, and every night they have a fun time with the other performers, who are like their extended family. But Helena is hormonal; she’s becoming a woman, and it’s not easy for her to deal. She spends most of her time daydreaming and losing herself in a world of her own fancy. It shows her amazing creativity, but she begins to prefer her own world over the real world, and it starts to erode her relationship with her parents. One night, after a performance, she petulantly lashes out at them, running away to her trailer to be alone. This stress causes her mother to collapse, sending her to a hospital where Helena is told she will require a delicate operation. Helena goes and sleeps in her room that night seriously distraught, but when she wakes, she’s not exactly in the circus anymore. She’s in a strange land, a dream-like plane where nothing is as it seems. And it seems in this world, she has found herself in the City of Light. It’s oddly beautiful, but it’s being eaten alive by shadows, who seek to devour everything in sight. And, worse yet, it seems the shadows want her specifically, because she is an exact look-alike of the Princess of Shadows. Aided only by a strange coward named Valentine, can Helena piece together the twisted story of this world and uncover her purpose in it? Or will the shadows destroy the City of Light and its plucky, eclectic denizens?

It all sounds a little generic and cheesy on paper, and it is, but it’s all about the delivery here. This is one of the most eloquent pieces of special effects artistry I’ve ever laid eyes on. It’s an amazing blend of CG, animatronics, puppetry, and camera trickery that together marks a major milestone in movie history. Created by Jim Henson Productions, the studio that brought us The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, this is again its own contained, beautiful world that feels totally alive. There are conjoined giants twisting around, floating in the sky above while shadow demons scuttle across the ground like nightmarish beasts and in the middle is a young, confused girl with a universe of bizarre imaginings between her and her home. Wonderful imagery at work here.

But, again, the story is rather weak. The whole light vs. dark thing isn’t exactly fresh, but I can deal with that. Even though it’s similar to the story of The Dark Crystal in terms of content, I find myself wanting more distance from this character of Helena. I don’t mind a flawed character, but this chick is whiny and rather annoying. I’m reminded of the main character of Labyrinth, now that I think about it. Jennifer Connelly’s character was such a brat that I couldn’t reconcile her turn compared to her earlier, baby-hating ways. The same thing applies here; she’s not a bad person, and she’s not evil, she’s just annoying. And her sidekick, the mask-wearing Valentine, is equally annoying. What a chicken-shit yellow cur! The second he gets a chance to run in the face of danger, he pulls a Falstaffian turn and bolts! What a limp penis this guy is! Weak characters aside, the script by Neil Gaiman is good, but it doesn’t have the majesty and character of most of his works.

The actors are pretty damn good though. Stephanie Leonidas plays Helena, the wacky teen who is lost in the City of Light. She has a lot of potential as an actress, which you can see here. She has a lot of layers to her, as does any real teenager at that age; she can be sweet, bitchy, compassionate, and downright selfish at the drop of a hat, and that’s pretty hard to translate on the screen. I enjoy her a lot, and I can safely say she was the best in the film. Jason Barry is her weenie sidekick Valentine, and he also impressed. He has a lot of flair in his style that speaks to the fantastical material. He’s whimsical and charming, and that’s just what this character needed.

And let’s not forget the amazing crew. Dave McKean created the extraordinary vision encapsulated in Mirrormask, and it’s something that only he could’ve done. He alone has that beautifully twisted aesthetic, that tint over the eyes that allows for such wondrous artistic ability. As a director, he envelops the film, and while the Jim Henson presence can certainly be felt, nobody can deny that this is HIS movie. And also complimenting the cast is composer Iain Bellamy. His ethereal music, mixed with an acid jazz sensibility, really sets a mood for this dreamscape, and peppers my mind with a lot of wonderful ideas. It’s perfect for this kind of movie, and even his keen selections, such as an off-kilter remake of The Carpenters “Close to You” makes for some unforgettable scenes.

So get this movie. Forgive it’s lack of a clear or enjoyable script, or ignore it entirely. This is one of those rare occasions where it might be better to ignore it than to dwell on it too long. I admit that while it’s not perfect, Mirrormask is as beautiful as the intense language of dreams, the beatific composition of the subconscious. You’ll find yourself engrossed by the background, even if you don’t give a damn about the people in the foreground. Check it out; I give Mirrormask 8 conjoined floating giants out of 10. Huzzah!

Tomorrow we delve into the magical world of Stephen King with The Mist! Until then!

Every one today has just been so approachable, even when I myself was tongue-tied. As well as the books I bought (work of each speaker becomes available throughout the day) upon entering we were greeted with a bag of goodies, ranging from an issue of Graffik to a natural paper notebook to a packet of Rowantrees Randoms. People around me happily nom-ed the jellies. Sugar. Friend to the deadline driven creative everywhere. last from 8pm is the Offset social in the Bernard Shaw on south richmod st. Tonight (saturday), in the twisted pepper abbey st, features Tara McPhearson on decks. Is there anything the girl can’t do? Seriously. She’s a great artist (art geek), has cool tatoos (rock chick), djs (music diva) and was VP of college astronomy club (science hero). Dang woman! :)

Art Sleuth made it to two excellent openings last night. The first being Control.Alt.Shift’s Unmasked Corruption. Original artwork for Political comic strips have been amassed from all corners of the globe, trailing events such as the Iranian Election, Barak Obahma’s election and the Iraq War.

Some comics tackle dark and little reported human rights scandals; Unspeakable Things by Paul O’Connell gives an account of the African ‘blood diamond’ (and tin, and oil and more) crisis. Black Holes by Dave McKean (with text from an anonymous writer) provides a shocking insight into an alleged scandal involving the suppression of HIV sufferers and vanishing funds for treatment by the Chinese government. Another shocking story is that of the ‘Skin Hunters’ in Poland from 1999 to 2002, a group of paramedics who delayed ambulances and killed off patients in a scam which gave them a cut of the funeral parlour fees of the victims, drawn by Janek Koza.

Some are more humorous, like the portrayal of Margaret Thatcher and her husband draw by Hunt Emerson in 1987. Excerpts from Alan Moore’s new magazine ‘Dodgem Logic’ are ingenious combining drawings and witty, off the wall story boards. A book of the cartoons and artwork from the exhibition is well worth the £5 fee.

The exhibition will be held at Lazarides Gallery, 8 Greek Street, Soho, London, W1D 4DG and runs from 6th – 28th November (Tuesday – Friday 11am -7pm and Saturday 12pm – 5pm).

And on to the Truman Breweries to see Cityscape, the group show comprising some big names in Street and Graphic Art both in New York and London. Well worth a visit if you’re popping down brick lane, it includes a large and varied selection of works and artists including pieces by Obey, Restitution Press, Unknown, Seripop, Swoon, Philip Lumbang and up and coming Ashes 57. The dubstep mash-up after party was banging too. Good one Lava Collective!

Cityscape, Lava Collective, Dray Walk Gallery, Truman Breweries. (5th to the 15th of November 2009).

Jack and I are preparing a book collaboration with Jim and Bébé Rose of circus sideshow fame and Mr. Cursed Pirate Girl himself, Jeremy Bastian, and spending a lot of personal time sculpting it (because we love Bébé so much!!!) while Cursed Pirate Girl blazes through printings and can’t keep up with demand- the third printing of #1 is officially all gone, and watch for a new Haven Distribution Exclusive second printing of #2- with an all new “the other side of the mirror” cover- in stores November 11! (Retailers- contact havendistro.com for orders.)

I’m hard at work on the book on Silent Films for the Dave McKean show at Billy Shire Fine Arts in February, and back in England, Dave is as busy as ever and getting ready to spend the winter on the Nitrate paintings for the show- if we could devise a machine to follow him around and harness a fraction of what he radiates, we could power a second world country, quite easily.

If you’re not following Dave on Twitter, visit http://www.twitter.com/davemckean and add him- he posts lots of great photos and work-in-progress photos! (Fans of Mirrormask will be happy to know that a recent tweet mentions that Dave’s second full-length film LUNA may be one step closer to completion…)

……….

What else is there to update? I’ve been decimated by this new invention of the 22st century called “Acid Reflux” which I am currently deconstructing by maintaining a paleolithic diet of meats, fruits, and vegetables while I undo decades of bad (i.e., American) eating habits and try to rebuild my healthy flora. I actually saw more improvement AFTER I threw away the prescriptions for acid suppressors and started the more holistic approach. It doesn’t sound like a big deal (or so I would have been the first to say BEFORE I experienced the hospital stays), but it’s made me pretty incommunicado for the last season. The good news is that I’m learning a lot about being responsible for my health in a way that I never have, and it’s making sense in all parts of my life. I suspect this- if it doesn’t in fact kill me- will reveal itself to have been a massive learning experience about what we are “fed”- the propaganda of consumption- for the next phase of my life, and will improve my productivity and focus a thousand fold. Plus- at long last- the analog recording studio here will be finally tweaked with the final install touches next week. (That’s ten weeks in fewer than ten sentences! Whew!)

……….

Speaking of focus, the kind of focus that makes electrons shudder, imagine being at the top of your game for decades. Say, being one of the go-to artists on something as seminal and powerful as Neil Gaiman’s epic graphic novel cycle The Sandman. Imagine at the close of that era professional and personal difficulties decimating that ledge overlooking the valley, and as you fall down, hitting every rock and branch on the way down- no, the rocks weren’t leaping out of their way to break skin, it only felt like it- and reaching a point creatively where you were forced to examine the root, the core of what you believed in as an artist.

Now imagine living in seclusion for three harsh years of constant self-examination, painstakingly scripting, curling lines and tiny crosshatches with pen and ink on paper, each page never quite done for weeks on end… And at the end of three years of determination and dedication, with over two hundred pages, twenty or so not making that final culling of the scythe. Imagine THAT kind of focus.

Michael Zulli, foreshadowing...

What Michael Zulli has crafted with his masterpiece The Fracture of the Universal Boy is- and I say this without the slightest hesitation- more aligned with Symbolist literature such as Joris-Karl Huysman’s 1891 novel Le Bas (“Down There” or “The Damned”) than anything else I can think of. The poet Stéphane Mallarmé articulated the scope of the term Symbolism, stating “Suggestion, that is the dream”, and the dream/awake//surreal/hyper-real elements that make up The Fracture of the Universal Boy have absolutely NOTHING to do with anything I’ve ever seen happen in comics.

I don’t know yet how to sum it up in a brief passage, but the random fragments in my head are this:

(1) People- “comic readers” especially- will generally hate this book. Angel raping? Check. Drug fiends under the swamp water? Check. False “happy” endings, and eviscerated eye sockets? Oh, yes… Seriously, it’s commercial suicide.

(2) Like Schiller said (and Klimt repeated), it is the artist’s duty to RAISE and EXPAND the consciousness of the public, not to feed them whatever smooth flavors they order. See #1.

(3) This is not an easy read. It’s harsh, melodramatic, overbearing, passionate… and captures in crystalline fashion EXACTLY the experiences of the artist- saying everything, while revealing nothing. In short- this is, by definition, a perfect piece of ART. Its sentiments are literally timeless, but it could only have been created today. Its message would be equally as potent in 1810, 1910, 2010, and 2110.

Zulli has done a rare thing, which is brought the elements that made Symbolism an important movement, and found a way to make it relevant and contemporary. Even if you feel the Pre-Raphaelite leanings of his commercial stories with Neil Gaiman are too saccharin, if you are honest with yourself when you read The Fracture of the Universal Boy you will be forced to admit that in this book the ink brush has cut completely past the velvet, through the twitching muscle, cracked the bone, and gone down to the very marrow of the artist-

And THAT is a RARE and PRECIOUS thing.

I know that was a bit of a ramble, but even though I’ve read the book a half dozen times, I still don’t have my head around it. It’s like reading Carlos Castaneda, or like the Anti-Jonathan Livingston Seagull. (It’s almost The Holy Mountain of graphic novels, if H. P. Lovecraft channelling Oscar Wilde had scripted Jodorowsky’s film.) It’s venom on a curved blade, and dandyism, and fear, and surrender and transcendence- and it is literally palpable.

Buy it. Read it. You’ll likely hate it. And like strong medicine, that should tell you something- this is good for you. Read it again. One day a light bulb will click- and you’ll THANK him.

Coming this Spring:

Try reading this thing when yer 13... Dave McKean’s last outing in film ‘MirrorMask

Try reading this thing when yer 13...

Dave McKean’s last outing in film ‘MirrorMask’ didn’t live up to what I had hoped it would, but it was a hard project to begin with and I cut a lot of slack. I’ll always have a soft spot for McKean, his covers for The Sandman were masterpieces and his twisted collaboration with Grant the Morrison on ‘Arkham Asylum’ did wonders to corrupt my young mind when I first read it (And every goddamn time since then too). So I am a bit curious to see how he handles adapting his solo graphic novel ‘Cages’ to the screen. From Coming Soon:

One project that McKean can proudly claim as completely his own is the ambitious serialized story “Cages,” which appeared as individual issues sporadically through the ’90s before being collected into a single volume by Kitchen Sink and NBM.

It was a very personal introspective piece of work involving creativity and cats and up until now, there was never any word of it being adapted into any other form until McKean made the following statement on his Twitter feed:

“Great first meeting about Cages film; a long term possibility, but good to know all interested parties are on the same page.”

Rage Cages

Obviously, this project is very much in the early early stages, and one would think that bringing the challenging graphic novel to the screen would probably take many years to write, finance, etc. but fans of McKean’s artwork and collaborations with Gaiman over the years surely would be interested to see whether “Cages” is even possible as a film. While the graphic novel is seemingly out of print, one can often find it in hardcover and paperback forms through eBay, second-hand bookshops and the like.

I only vaguely remember ‘Cages’, but I remember it also being a difficult read and visually very, well McKean so we’ll have to wait and see.

so according to the sales person at Fully Booked -The Block, you just have to bring a copy of one of your favorite Fables series plus the proof of purchase (your receipt from Fully Booked of course!) on November 20-23, 2009 at Fully Booked the Fort. But I think you should register online first so you’d get updates on James Jean activities and schedules. Best that you make sure to work on that before you go, unless you don’t mind wasting your time on waiting.

so unlike the year that Neil Gaiman came to visit Manila, there is no art competition for James Jean’s visit this year… or maybe we just don’t know yet.

A cominciare dagli ospiti.

Mckean è persona deliziosa (e aggiungerei paziente).

Questo, oltre all’artista, è l’uomo Dave McKean.

I’m not a big video game player (at least not since my Donkey Kong days- the Glory!) but occasionally I fall into one like Alice down a rabbit hole. The SSX series completely had me for about 2 years, I enjoyed the hell out of the lo-fi World of Goo, loved the ambition and scope of the claymation-meets-Edgar Allen Poe CD-ROM The Dark Eye, even if it was fairly static and uneventful.

And BioShock made my head explode.

Above is the trailer for Machinarium, by Amanita. It’s a point and click game for PC and Mac, and the world is just beautiful. I think this is where games need to go: creating not only interactive worlds, but lush, designed worlds with a unifying artistic vision, even down to a cohesive pencil-style and design. Imagine Dave McKean’s Mirrormask as a playable game. Shane Acker’s 9 might’ve been more successful as a game, although I haven’t seen it, and should just shut the hell up until I do.

These are exciting times for creators to be alive.

Boing Boing has some really nice sketchbook pages from Amanita’s Jakub Dvorský and Adolf Lachman, as well as some stunning screengrabs. Check it out, y’all.

I generally skip the spoken word tracks on iTunes when I shuffle, which means that the other day I was really quite surprised at myself for letting it run. So I had Neil Gaiman reading his chapter Danse Macabre live in Edinburgh from a year ago, while I cooked dinner. It’s so wonderful! Both the reading and the chapter and the whole book. Unlike normal audio books you get audience reactions with laughs and applause, as well as brief pauses while Neil drinks some more water.

When I first read The Graveyard Book I did so with no pictures at all. That’s because I read a proof, so at least I got to it earlier than other people. Mustn’t grumble.

And then in time for the above event last October and my interview with Neil, I did get a proper copy, complete with illustrations. Mine was the ‘children’s’ edition with pictures by Chris Riddell, which are very good. Only, then I caught sight of the ‘adult’ version which Julie Bertagna bought, because she likes Dave McKean, who did the pictures for it.

Wishy-washy that I am, I thought that looked really good. Too.

Well, now the paperbacks are out, yet again in both versions. My quandary is over, as some very generous soul has furnished me with both. So at the last count I must have four Graveyards. Small wonder the house is feeling a little on the tight side.

One grave in every graveyard belongs to the ghouls. Wander any graveyard long enough and you will find it — waterstained and bulging, with cracked or broken stone, scraggly grass or rank weeds around it, and a feeling, when you reach it, of abandonment. It may be colder than the other gravestones, too, and the name is all too often impossible to read. If there is a statue on the grave it will be headless or so scabbed with fungus and lichens as to look like a fungus itself. If one grave in a graveyard looks like a target for petty vandals, that is the ghoul-gate. If the grave makes you want to be somewhere else, that is the ghoul-gate.

There was one in Bod’s graveyard.

There is one in every graveyard.

[From page 61 of The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman]

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

Copyright 2008, HarperCollins

307 pages, fantasy

Nobody Owens (Bod for short), may appear to be a perfectly average boy, but he has lived in an abandoned graveyard for as long as he can remember, looked after and educated by ghosts and other beings of the dead. He soon gets a thirst for adventure and wants to leave the graveyard, though if he does, he will be in great danger — in danger of the same force that killed his former family.

The Graveyard Book chronicles Bod’s adventures in a way that seems nearly like a collection of short stories, each chapter a new story, in a way. Neil Gaiman is a master of suspense, and his dark humor weaves through every chapter. This book really sets the mood for Halloween, with plenty of ghosts and ghouls and such. The story itself left me hypnotized, and the day after I finished the book I found myself wandering the local cemetery in search of the “ghoul-gate”. Say I have an overreactive imagination, but I believe I found it.

The book was stuffed full of illustrations by Dave McKean, and while McKean did a good job at capturing the essence of Gaiman’s writing, the constant pictures interrupting text annoyed me. I prefer to imagine things myself. Also, the involvement of the mundane, just as the book gets rolling, was a bit discouraging to me, as I was hoping for a totally phantasmagoric, Edgar Allan Poe-esque tale. Overall, a really good story, worthy of the Newbery award it received.

Rating: 4/5 stars

The tendency to autobiographical, memorialist, historical and journalistic reporting of reality has always been present in many of the great masters of arte sequential art. It is precisely this aspect of the comic that the Komikazen Festival is occupied with. In this edition in particular it is mainly stories that originate with individual tension, research and experimentation that are presented.

Six of the authors, guests of the fifth edition of Komikazen, will be the protagonists of workshops and meetings together with authoritative representatives of the national cultural panorama and present in Ravenna with the original artworks or some of their most important works which will be exhibited for one month (until 8 November 2009) in various locations in the city.

Pareti bianche.

Profuso in quantità industriali.

A “Li scalini”. FV di fronte a me.

Cena appetitosa. E cicoria ripassata in padella. Birra, tanta.

Então, eu colocarei as cadeiras
sobre as mesas, apagarei as luzes,
e fecharei as portas do universo,
enquanto o deixo para trás…”

- Morte

Obra do Destino, talvez.

Bons sonhos.
