David Beckham as asthma this weekend during a game with team memebers LA GALAXY the soccer star was seen taken a puff of his inhaler. Beckhams representative said that he has been suffereing with a mild condition of asthma since he was a young boy. Dr. Mike Thomas of Asthma UK says: “Seeing David Beckham using an inhaler is proof asthma needn’t stop you competing at the highest level.” Just goes to show you don’t let asthma stop you from doing anything you want to!

It seems Taylor Lautner was bullied at school for his acting ability! In an exclusive interview to Rolling Stone magazine he revealed “I was never extremely confident,” he said it wasn’t physical just people picking on him for what he wanted to do with his life, well at least he stuck at it and never let the bullies get the better of him. Good on you Lautner! I bet them bullies are kicking themselves now because look where he got a huge roll in New Moon.

On Sunday afternoon my son drove us downtown to attend the Major League Soccer Cup Final being held

On Sunday afternoon my son drove us downtown to attend the Major League Soccer Cup Final being held at Qwest Field. It was a beautiful night for soccer. Very cold but not a drop of rain fell on us during the pre-game festivities and the game.

Seattle was putting on a good show with just enough sunshine to make it glow.

It’s time for Major League Soccer in Seattle!

Josh, Beau, Jan and I were the happy ticket holders for the evening. The Seattle Sounders Season tickets included a ticket for this game.

I was able to get some photos of Josh with a couple Sounders. This is Roger Levesque, one of our favorite players!

It’s always fun to participate in the “march to the match” where hundreds of people carrying their flags and scarves walk together to Qwest field from Occidental Park with the Sounders band leading the way.

Josh with Leo Gonzalez a great defender for the Sounders.

After the march we headed straight to our favorite taco truck to get some yummy street tacos. You just can’t beat 3 asada tacos with onion and cilantro for $5.

Even though the Sounders were not in the final the stadium was filled with green. There was a good section of Real Salt Lake supporters in red, blue and gold and a section of L.A. Galaxy supporters wearing the blue, white and gold. I have to say that it was nice just cheering on good soccer and not being all worked up over a certain team winning…

I love Seattle at night!

There were 46,011 people in attendance for this game. I’m sure we set a MLS Cup record for attendance with that number!

If it’s confetti…it must be game time!

Just in case you don’t recognize him this is David Beckham. There are people who bad mouth him but you cannot argue the fact that he has a beautiful touch on the ball! He really is a talented soccer player and he looks pretty good, too.

Landon Donovan is another great soccer player. He was the Honda Player of the Year. He also plays for the U.S. Soccer team so you’ll see him at World Cup in Africa 2010. He didn’t have a great night in the finals and he missed his penalty shot in the shoot-out. I’m sure he was very disappointed. I hate to see games go to Penalty kicks!!! Drives me nuts.

Galaxy did get to celebrate after this goal before Real Salt Lake tied it up.

I don’t have a photo of Real Salt Lake celebrating their victory but they did win after 2 overtime periods and then a penalty shot shoot-0ut. Congratulations to Real Salt Lake, their fans who came out in number, and their great goal keeper, Nick Rimando!

Nick Rimando

Sheesh! That was a lot of photos. If you made it all the way to the end, Congratulations!

::: FistedAway today welcomes a guest post from Elliott Tucker, editor of the rather lovely Futfanatico :::

MLS commissioner Don Garber went from talking with European bigwigs to a dose of cold reality with this MLS Cup weekend, in which the eleven men of Real Salt Lake beat an undermanned David Beckham. Yes, ESPN stopped short of legal action, but did issue a heated written reprimand on most major outlets against “the Don.” What’s the problem, you ask? Why is the Seattle rain falling down on the MLS parade? Television broadcast rights.

And piracy.

Sources indicate that since 2007, an anonymous bandit on Justin.tv. has been illegally broadcasting streams of MLS games. ESPN, owner of the tv rights and incensed at such piracy, demanded that Justin.tv ban the illegal broadcasters. They have threatened swift legal action should any scofflaw broadcast the MLS Cup final. Yet a closer look revealed a pattern in the user names: DGarber27, DonGarb, DonDonG, and D2ThaMuhfuknG to name a few.

Eventually, after the user’s IP address was traced to MLS headquarters, coincidentally Don Garber’s suburban home in upstate New York, “the Don” came clean. He was quoted as saying that “he just wanted MLS to get to a broader audience,” an odd claim given that the highest peak viewership reached barely 200 users. The most popular match, strangely enough, was marketed under the erroneous title “Doogie Howser MD Reunion Special”. Neil Patrick Harris was happy to do an interview in exchange for a warm, free lunch, but knew nothing of the broadcast.

Despite such suspicious circumstances, the Don apologized to ESPN and promised to never again broadcast over Justin.tv. He also double pinky-sweared to not broadcast the MLS Cup final on Justin.tv this Sunday. However, when pointedly questioned about suspicious user names on other broadcasting platforms, such as “DonzoMcGonzo” at Ustream, and “IreallyamDonGarberJEEZ” at Veetle, “the Don” declined to comment. His grin said it all.

When writing about a game that involves a team I support I like to take the approach of looking at t

When writing about a game that involves a team I support I like to take the approach of looking at the cup as being both half full or half empty. As a (mostly) non-partisan observer for MLS Cup I didn’t want to pollute this blog with such thinking.

(I am, however, surprised that I haven’t yet seen an overtime/penalty related headline somewhere about how “The Cup Runneth Over” . . . )

Instead, here are some largely unfiltered thoughts on yesterday’s MLS Cup.

It was a Cup Final – Last night’s game was not filled with particularly pretty soccer nor as many goal-mouth chances as I’d like to see, but this is what Cup finals are often like. What was noticeable . . . players cared. Players played sick. Players tried to play hurt. Fans watched. (Actually I don’t know that anybody watched, but I can hope.)

Counter ‘this’ – I was lightly supporting RSL over LA last night, mostly because I like the approach Jason Kreis takes (“He’s making an offensive sub, so early, what about penalties? Go Jason!”) and as a sentimental vote for ex-Rev Andy Williams who I always liked and whose personal/family story was so compelling this year. What solidified my support for RSL was this . . . they held the ball, the tried to play on the ground, the wanted to play soccer. LA never seemed quite capable of that despite Donovan and Beckham’s presence – and appeared to be content to try to win by striking on the quick counter. While possibly effective, it is not my favorite style.

Penalties – Most people start their rant with “what a terrible way to end a game” . . . fine. What’s the realistic alternative? The players were dead tired and the soccer was beginning to suffer greatly. Penalties are certainly dramatic, require some level of skill and provide a chance to feed the US fixation on goalkeepers (more on that below.) I don’t know a better – reasonable – solution.

Beckham – Frankly, I am glad his team lost. This is not because I’m anti-Beckham, in fact, I think MLS is better with him in it than without him. However, what I like is that this loss helps the MLS marketing department write the story line around Beckham’s “unfinished business” to create some drama after his Milan loan draws to a close. (Too bad he doens’t have a deep evil voice – quite the opposite in fact – or he could have stormed off with an Arnold-esque “I’ll be back” snarl.)

Landon – The contrast of the first goal’s pin-point cross from the wing to his missed penalty and absentee performance post the 45 minute mark pretty much sums up the confusion MLS and US fans have about Landon Donovan. It will certainly add fuel to the ‘Landycakes’ fire anyway. Is he a World Class player whose absence from the US National Team shows us as bland and boring? Is he a player how only really shows well in less-meaningful games and fades away when it matters most? Like with my view on Becks, part of me was happy that Landon’s team lost. I like the idea of a ticked-off Landon with something to prove taking the field in South Africa for the USA. What I worry about is the reverse – some odd crisis of confidence that affects his decision making about his play and his next steps for his club future.

M.V.P. – I like Nick Rimando and both last night and the Chicago game show that he seems good at stopping penalties. But I must admit it really bothers me when a goalkeeper – any goalkeeper - getts an MVP award. There are suggest - especially for just PKs. I much prefer a field player gets it, and this game I’d say Kyle Beckerman was probably worthy. I doubt most “soccer experts” would really argue this anti-goalkeeper stance, but there’s a continual need to pretend a US soccer fan couldn’t notice a good performance that didn’t directly result in one or more goals.

*Note: Beckerman’s hair may have removed him from eligibility for the MVP award. Only the other Beck(ham) can be a super-star/sex symbol while having absolutely ridiculous hair. And Beckham clearly wasn’t going to win anything last night . . .

Field Turf – I have mixed emotions on this. The purist in me says a final should never be on turf. Well, actually, the purist in me says a professional game should never be on turf. (I may have turned off the TV if there were football lines, so at least that was addressed.) However, there is a piece of me that also wants to say this. SHUT UP. “That injury only would happen on turf.” Maybe. “You can see the affect of the turf on that play.” Maybe. Both teams played on the same pitch. Both knew what type of surface they’d be on. Both had some amount of time to practice. Once the game starts, please just LET IT GO. Alternatively we’d be hearing about the injury that only happened because of the divot in the grass or the pass that didn’t get completed due to the mud puddle. PLAY THE GAME. Let’s rid the game of turf if possible (thanks Toronto!) but let’s deal with it until that day.

So that wraps up MLS 2009 . . . time to start watching the Collective Bargaining Agreement hyperbole that we will all be bombarded with and seeing if we can cut through the malarkey that gets spewed from both sides.

(WFI) England star David Beckham misses out on winning his first piece of silverware with the Los Angeles Galaxy but looks ahead to buying a Major League Soccer club.

The Galaxy lost 5-4 in a shoot-out to Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup final at Qwest Field in Seattle on Sunday.

Speaking to reporters yesterday, MLS commissioner Don Garber said Beckham has the option to own the 20th MLS team.

“We didn’t talk about this until recently but David has the option for our 20th team,” said Garber. “That option can’t be exercised until after 2011 or after he stops playing so we have got some time to figure that out.”

The Philadelphia Union become the 16th club in the MLS next year, with the Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps due to begin competition in 2011. Montreal could become the 19th team in the league. Garber confirmed last week that there are no active discussions under way with a possible 20th team and no timetable to bring them into the league.

After Sunday’s defeat to Real Salt Lake, Beckham said he would be exercising the option of investing in an MLS team, which was included in his Galaxy contract, and was already looking at different cities for a team.

“We’ve got options obviously at this stage I am not going to say what they are but it will happen eventually,” Beckham was quoted by Reuters.

Under MLS guidelines, approved candidates to invest in a new franchise would be required to pay a $40 million expansion fee and deliver a suitable stadium for soccer.

Beckham received three painkilling injections in his bruised foot before the MLS Cup final, but had an influential role. He played the whole match, including extra time, set up his team’s only goal and fired in the first of the Galaxy’s four penalties in the shootout.

After the match, Beckham restated his intention to return to he Galaxy following his second loan spell at AC Milan to play in the fourth season of his five-year MLS contract. The 34-year-old hopes to play for England at the South Africa 2010 World Cup next summer. His Galaxy contract finishes at the end of the 2011 season.

I think this is a fair enough question. Therefore, I decided to do what I always do when I want to find out information on one subject or another. I Googled it. This is what I found out. It would seem that David Beckham, his wife Victoria and their three children will be going to Germany for Thanksgiving to visit with the troops. I found this quite interesting since I do not think they are even American citizens. I could be wrong about that.

Brokedown Cadillac, a Nashville county music group will visit troops stationed in Iraq for the Thanksgiving holiday. The band members say they have close ties to the military and that is why they feel honored to spend the holiday with troops. The Band wants to spend time with those who cannot spend Thanksgiving with their own families.

On November 23, 2007, then President George W. Bush made a surprise Thanksgiving visit to the troops stationed in Iraq. He spent 2 ½ hours visiting with the troops and even helped serve Thanksgiving dinner.

I wonder what President Obama plans to do for Thanksgiving? Play golf? Spend time with his family? Walk the dog? I have a good hunch that he will not be going to Afghanistan. Or even Iraq. After all, he has been traveling quite a bit lately. He probably needs time to get over the jet lag.

Real Salt Lake stunned the LA Galaxy on penalty kicks to win its first MLS Cup. RSL won 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. Salt Lake goalie Nick Rimando came up huge, making two saves in the penalty shootout, while Landon Donovan put his kick over the bar. Robbie Russell scored the title-clinching PK in the seventh round. Backup LA goalie Josh Saunders also made two saves in the shootout.

It was the first title for Real since the team joined the league as an expansion club five years ago. Real also has the distinction of becoming the first professional sports franchise in the US to win a title after finishing the regular season with a losing record. Mike Magee gave LA the lead in the first half – scoring after some excellent work from David Beckham and Donovan. Robbie Findlay equalized for Salt Lake in the second half.

It was a hard fought game by both sides, and it’s always unfortunate that a close contest like this has to come down to penalties. In my dream world, they would just keep playing until there was a goal, even if it took all night.

Ham fisted.

I kept thinking that throughout a nervy, injury riddled, dramatic MLS cup last night. I had been distracted from the game by the idiotic musings of John Harkes and JP Dellacamara. It was clear, and has been any time the Galaxy play, that each of David Beckham’s golden balls were being lovingly caressed by the tongues of John and JP. You would have thought that Beck’s had won the MLS MVP award for the way they were talking about him. Never did they bother to note that he isn’t the best player on his team (or second best). Every time Beckham made a pass Harkes would hyperventilate and overstate the importance of the pass, “such a great ball” he would exclaim after a solid basic pass had been made. A pass that just about every MLS player makes on a regular basis. Harkes kept going on and on about what great service Beckham delivers from the corner and how it was almost impossible that they hadn’t scored off of one of his corners all season. Perhaps, you ball licking fool, his corners haven’t been good this season.

It is truly amazing to watch ESPN suck up to David Beckham thinking that he is a draw. The guy still can sell papers in England and drive internet hits like a mother fucker but he doesn’t put people in stands any more. At least not here. The Galaxy couldn’t even sell out their Western Conference final. Chicago sold out their Eastern Conference Final 4 days before the game.

When JP and John weren’t blathering on about Becks they were blathering on about something. These two need to figure out when to shut up. Their droning on and on during the penalties hurt the drama. A bit of silence before the kick is taken would have helped to build the drama up even further, showcasing the enormity of each kick. Instead we just got vapid talking that distracted from the moment at hand.

The whole production itself was a blunt instrument to the face. No substance, no style (that new fancy tech showing where players were was horrific) and of course the annoying ticker at the bottom of the screen. This is what ESPN does and I really shouldn’t be surprised that I’m so disappointed by them. MLS and, in particular, MLS Cup deserve better.

I’m a Jedward fan. That’s something I never thought I’d say but I have to admit that the twins from Dublin have won me over during their longer than anticipated stay on the X Factor. Sadly they left the show on Sunday after a sing off against Olly Murs, but you’re sure to see more of them in the future. Whether they become the new Ant and Dec or the male version of the Cheeky Girls remains to be seen…

The boys were definitely a marmite act – you either love ‘em or hate ‘em – but here are the reasons why they will be missed…

1. They’re funny

John and Edward have a self-deprecating sense of humour and aren’t afraid to have a laugh. In their first audition, when asked why they wanted to be singers they didn’t give the usual cliched, cheesy lines about wanting to save the world or be the next Mariah. No, Jedward admitted they wanted the girls. When wished a happy birthday by Whitney Houston she asked how old they were: “18,” they replied, “and still no sign of facial hair”.

2. The outfits

Whether dressed in shiny red suits in homage to Britney Spears or dressing up as Ghostbusters for movie week, Jed’s outfits were bizarre yet completely genius.

3. The hair

Even David Beckham takes style advice from the twins...

Cheryl and Dannii may be the style queens of the show but when it comes to hair, Jedward were the ones we were all talking about.

4. They’re tough

Even before their first performance in the live shows, Jedward were the villains of the X Factor. Not only did they have to deal with Facebook hate campaigns and bad press but they also had to perform week-upon-week to a crowd of booing yobs. If I was subject to the kind of abuse they’ve experienced I’d have driven off a cliff by now, but every week they boys got out there and gave it their all.

5. They made me laugh

Yes, Stacey gives funny interviews, and yes, Joe’s got an amazing voice, but when it came to the live performances there was one act I wanted to see – Jedward. If I missed a show I wouldn’t bother you-tubing the rest of the acts. The twins were the only act that got me laughing week upon week, and in the depressing world we live in, that’s a good thing.

6. They got everyone talking

Following each show, Jedward were the one act everyone would be talking about. They regularly made it to the trending topics on Twitter and caused more controversy on my Facebook newsfeed than Nick Griffin on Question Time. What will I talk about down the pub now?!

7. They showed the judges for what they really are…

Dannii and Cheryl had no problems putting them through to bootcamp and they wouldn’t have made it to the final 24 if it wasn’t for the judges putting them there. In the live shows they both admitted they found them entertaining, yet when they made it through over their own acts, the sweet masks dropped. When Rikki Loney left the show in week two, Cheryl said: “I can’t believe John and Edward are still here and Rikki’s leaving”. When Lucie left the show in a controversial deadlock vote against the twins, Dannii wished all the “good singers” luck in the competition. Even when Dannii had the casting vote last night she took the opportunity to kick the boys while they were down, repeatedly asking if it was a singing competition. Why couldn’t she just say “well done, good luck, but I’m sending home the boys”? I usually like Dannii and think she’s got the most integrity of all the judges, but at that moment she came across as bitter and lacking class.

Will Jedward make it in the world of celebrity? Or will they dissappear back over the Irish sea and into the world of X Factor failures? What do you reckon?

Tonight David Beckham, Landon Donovan and the L.A. Galaxy take on Real Salt Lake for the Major Leagu

Tonight David Beckham, Landon Donovan and the L.A. Galaxy take on Real Salt Lake for the Major League Soccer championship in Seattle.

I saw Beckham play against D.C. United in August. The game ended in a scoreless tie. It was raining steadily most of the game and it had rained heavily beforehand. So here are a few notes — three months late.

United’s Ben Olsen did a good job keeping Beckham in check. I got the feeling that Beckham wasn’t going all out because of the conditions, but I’m not sure if you can blame him because he’s had some ankle injuries, and at 34 he has to pace himself because of the occasional call-up to England’s national team as well as playing in Europe the rest of the year.

What at first seemed like nonchalance, though, actually was the result of good positioning and little wasted motion, as Beckham knew where to go – he never got too far forward or too far back. He did have some of his patented free kicks but nothing too spectacular. He seemed relaxed and confident.

The RFK Stadium crowed booed Beckham which I thought was good because it showed that they were true soccer fans rooting for the home team rather than just going to see Beckham. The atmosphere at RFK is great and fan club Barra Brava was in full force. The local media did not do a good job of publicizing the game, so that combined with the weather and there being a Redskins preseason game and a Nationals game resulted in a crowd of about 22,000, only slightly more than usual.

Other notes from the game:

Beckham seemed content to hang back and set up others instead of charging to the goal when it seemed like he had a few opportunities to dribble up and take a shot.

I didn’t see a lot of verbal communication between Beckham and Donovan.

There were a couple of times Donovan could have kicked it back to Beckham but chose to keep it or pass to someone else.

Beckham didn’t use his left foot much.

All in all, it was a pretty even game without a lot of great scoring chances. Donovan showed some of his straight ahead speed during several charges to the goal.

It sounds like Seattle is a great soccer town, averaging 30,000 fans per game, with a sold out crowd of about 45,000 expected for tonight’s match. If sports media outlets such as ESPN would give soccer more airtime, I’m sure it would do better among fans.
