After an exciting final round against David Edwards, Pat Gibson came home the winner of Are You An Egghead? series two. It’s yet another feather in Gibson’s cap – over the last five years he’s won just about everything going, and holds the unique treble of having been a Mastermind champ, Brain of Britain AND million-pound winner on WWTBAM. It was an exciting final too – although Gibson won all five subject rounds to give him a 5-0 lead going into the final general knowledge round, Edwards managed to pull back several points before Gibson made it across the line with 10 points to Edwards’ 7. Once again, Are You An Egghead? has proven far more entertaining than the parent show. Will it encourage me to watch Eggheads itself more? No, of course not.

Bon, alors, 900 euros ?

Above: Sunday evening found me and Tracie B tattered by the rain and mud at the Austin City Limits musical festival but warm and happy at the dinner table of the inimitable Bill Head — Austinite bon vivant and all-around good fellow. Bill made a wonderful ragù alla bolognese and so I brought along a bottle of Lini Lambrusco (in this case, Lambrusco di Sorbara). As restaurateur Danny Meyer likes to say, “if it grows with it, it goes with it.”

If you happen to find yourself near a computer this afternoon at 3 p.m. (Texas time), please check out a live chat that I will be doing today with Austin American-Statesman social columnist Michael Barnes at Out and About (Austin360.com).

Above: We were also joined Sunday night by Austin natural treasure Mary Gordon Spence (to Bill’s left), writer, humorist, and radio personality, who had many wonderful tales to tell of her recent trip to Italy, and University of Texas professor of government David Edwards.

We’ll be chatting about the series of classes on Italian wine I’m teaching every Tuesday at The Austin Wine Merchant beginning this evening.

Tonight’s class is sold out and the others are filling up quickly but there is still some space available. My favorite session is Italian Wine and Civilization (Tuesday, November 10), where we read a passage from Italian literature or history, and then taste a wine in some way pertinent to the text. Did you know that Niccolò Machiavelli was a winemaker, for example?

In other news…

Tracie B and I braved the rain and mud at this year’s Austin City Limits festival on Sunday. We didn’t stay long but did get to catch the B52s’s set, which couldn’t be anything other than super fun, and we also enjoyed super-shiny sisters-and-brother bluegrass/country act Jypsi (below). Jypsi was a little slick for my taste but man can they play!

Just over a year ago, I came to Austin for the second time to visit with Tracie B. Do you remember? Here’s a little post from the archive. We recreated the Austin City Limits photo op this year, except for this time sans mustache!

I have recently been hired to work part-time in a mentor/leadership role under the auspices of The Boston 100K Artscience Innovation Prize. I will work with select high school teens from around the city of Boston giving them opportunities to “learn through passionate development of breakthrough ideas in the arts and design, at the frontier of scientific knowledge.” The program was developed by Harvard professor, scientist and writer, David Edwards. The program is managed and housed by The Cloud Foundation. I am very excited to begin working with this “first in the nation” international program. I look forward to inspiring both the teens, and myself. My thanks to Joanne Kaliontzis for making me aware of this great opportunity. I AM NOW BLOGGING ABOUT THIS!!

David Edwards
Raw Story
July 16, 2009

The secret CIA program allegedly aimed at assassinating suspected terrorists abroad has raised the eyebrows of at least one former senior Bush Administration official who hints that the program may have actually gone into effect, despite the denials of the agency and congressional staff who have been briefed.

The aide, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, was chief of staff to Bush Secretary of State Colin Powell. He says he heard “echoes” of the program from US ambassadors abroad, who informed him that clandestine military teams were being dispatched to their countries.

A d v e r t i s e m e n t

“We, very early on, after 9/11, at the State Department, learned from our ambassadors in the field that there were teams being dispatched to their cities, to their countries, and these teams were clandestine and essentially aimed at capturing al Qaeda leaders or al Qaeda affiliates and interrogating them,” Wilkerson told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Tuesday. “So the fact that it might have gravitated over to the CIA or the CIA might have joined in, which is something that happens a lot these days with Delta Force and other special operators is no surprise to me.

“What I suspect has happened is what began to happen while I was still in the government, and that was we’re killing the wrong people,” Wilkerson added. “And we’re killing the wrong people in the wrong countries. And the countries are finding out about it, or at least there was a suspicion that the countries might find out about it, and so it was shut down. That’s my strong suspicion.”

CIA Director Leon Panetta announced this month that he’d shut down the program last month when he first learned about it.

The State Department, under Colin Powell, asked the Pentagon which countries were being targeted but found out little information from then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Wilkerson asserts.

“After some hemming and hawing, which was Rumsfeld’s forte, he finally admitted that he had dispatched some of these teams,” Wilkerson explained. “I don’t think we ever knew the full range of his deployments.” Wilkerson believes the CIA became involved in the program of targeted assassinations later.

“It’s laughable [the idea] that the CIA has never lied to Congress,” Wilkerson quipped. “They lie to Congress on a routine basis,” said Wilkerson. Historically, it’s presidents that take the fall when the CIA lies to Congress. Wilkerson says it’s unprecedented for a vice president to fill that role as Cheney appears to have done.

June 1, 2009

Former president apparently lends support for “Truth Commission” on prisoner abuse, says torture a crime “against our Constitution”

Former President Jimmy Carter, speaking to CNN on Monday, said he disagrees with President Barack Obama’s decision to withhold photos of prisoner abuse. He added that Obama appears to be resolved against resurrecting the past by punishing those in the Bush administration guilty of what Carter himself considers “crimes against our Constitution”

“I respect what his decisions are,” he told CNN’s Campbell Brown. “I don’t have the responsibility to deal with the consequences. But I think that most of his supporters were hoping he would be more open in the revelation of what we’ve done in the past.

“But, ah, he’s made a decision with which I really can’t contend, that he doesn’t want to resurrect the past. He doesn’t want to punish those that are guilty of perpetrating what I consider crimes against our own laws and against our constitution.”

Carter added that while releasing the images may cause “further animosity” toward the United States, the public knowledge that the photos simply exist already serves that cause, whereas instead of seeing them for what they are, the imagination can tend to fill in its own details.

And while Carter repeated several times that he will not criticize Obama for his decision, he did seem to lend support for the so-called “Truth Commission” that’s been discussed in the House and Senate.

Saying that “prosecution is too strong a word,” he added that what he would “like to see is a complete examination of what did happen, the identification of any perpetrators of crimes against our own laws or against international law,” said Carter. “And then after all that’s done, decide whether or not there should be any prosecutions.”

Brown’s interview with Carter will air on CNN, Monday night at 8 p.m. EST.

Any brand strategy requires a brand vision that focuses on the three core areas of brand recognition

Any brand strategy requires a brand vision that focuses on the three core areas of brand recognition, brand productivity and measuring competition.

People growth requires that the best sales talent is grown around the brand with team leaders focused on the areas of talent strategy, functional capability standards, sales capability embedding, building an expert network, advanced negotiation skills and coaching for high performance.

Brand productivity requires that the business encourages joined up business planning, category development and shopper insights, trade spend and investment channel and customer profitability, trade strategy, brand passion, route to market and distributor management.

A trade strategy focuses an organisation on it’s markets, and fundamental activity toward achieving a sales vision. A channel vision compliments the portfolio and consumer strategy to understand brand strategy. A trade strategy should be easily understood by the entire organisation. This helps generate channel prioritisation to identify where to activate the portfolio strategy. The channels vision combines with the overall planned output to inform and drive the commercial plan.

A vital part of the process is a scorecard measurement that aligns the organisation to the final outcome and that commits stake holders to the plan.

With an effective trade strategy organisations can prioritise the channels and brands to focus resources on, to achieve the long-term customer goals. once the organisation has agreed its plan, process and direction, a trade strategy needs to be developed to drive the outcome. A process of developing a trade marketing strategy challenges any organisation to decide which parts of the business you will be focusing on, and where the greatest challenges like in achieving corporate objectives.

I’ll have a hand or two up later today.

But in the meantime, I hope you will be amused by the definitive review of Chickengate, the video. If you’d like to see the video first, which personally I recommend, go to my other blog here for a link to the video, which contains also a typical reaction….The review itself is here.

If you happen not to know the Chickengate scandal, which is an AFL affair, think rugby players make video which may or may not be a statement on the abuse, sexual and otherwise of women. In this regard I think we can be in agreement that one football code is much the same as another…

Please come back later in the day for a couple of hands…

When asked today if I was barracking for North Melbourne or Essendon I thought I’d better look into Chickengate first. For those that don’t know what that is, here is a link to the video and a typical analysis of it. In short two members of the NM team produced a video typically interpreted as abusive, violent and demeaning to women. Ie nothing particularly surprising for any football code that I know of.

At any rate, I also picked up on this link, which is a brilliant sendup of the whole affair, managing to satirise At the Movies with David and Margaret at the same time, a worthy exercise in itself. It begins thus:

Here is what David Stratton and Margaret Pomeranz said on their TV show, At the Movies:

At the Movies Transcript:

David: Directors Adam Simpson and Daniel Pratt have perfectly captured the insecurities of the modern rooster in their critically acclaimed Adventures of Little Boris, a gritty drama that takes peer pressure to a whole new level.

The protagonist, Boris, a mid-20s rooster living in North Melbourne, is consumed by nasty masochistic thoughts which he feels are normal. Growing up within a certain male culture has taught him that chickens are dispensable objects only good for two things: sex and stir-fry.

In denial over his own perceived masculinity, Boris attempts to win the approval of his brethren by repeatedly raping the one chicken he truly loves. Unfortunately, Boris is a high-profile rooster incapable of articulating his feelings in words; he gives little thought to the harm he is inflicting on his chicken and too much thought to how his mates back at the rooster coop will react.

Bravo David Edwards – your post makes the entire episode worth while. The full transcript of Margaret and David can be found here.

This is a little late for anyone who’s had more than their fair share of Easter eggs, but scientists have invented Le Whif, an inhaler which provides users with a calorie free chocolate fix.

The gadget lets users breathe in chocolate to curb cravings and satisfy their sweet tooth.

Invented by Harvard professor David Edwards, Le Whif comes in four different flavours: raspberry, mint, mango and plain.

“It seemed to us that eating was tending toward breathing, so, with a mix of culinary art and aerosol science, we’ve helped move eating habits to their logical conclusion.

“We call it whiffing.”

But what about the oral satisfaction?

The pleasure of chocolate isn’t just the smell and taste, it’s the melt-in-the-mouth sensation and I don’t think you’d get that by whiffing.

The revolutionary gadget means chocolate lovers can indulge their guilty pleasure without putting on weight.

The gadget lets users breathe in chocolate to curb cravings and satisfy their sweet tooth.

Invented by Harvard professor David Edwards, Le Whif comes in four different flavours: raspberry, mint, mango and plain.

He worked with his students at Harvard University to develop the product and said he was inspired by thinking beyond normal ways of eating food and into the future.

He said: “Over the centuries we’ve been eating smaller and smaller quantities at shorter and shorter intervals.

“It seemed to us that eating was tending toward breathing, so, with a mix of culinary art and aerosol science, we’ve helped move eating habits to their logical conclusion.

“We call it whiffing.”

The chocolate-flavoured powder is housed in a small plastic cylinder which users breathe in from.

Makers say the particles of the powder are too large to enter the lungs or do any damage.

They believed the chocolate inhaler is just the first step in a gastronomic revolution.

Tom Hadfield, part of the Le Whif team, said: “When you inhale food, you don’t want the particles going into your lungs.

“However, these are too big to do that, and we have developed a special mouthpiece to help.

“It fills your mouth with almost pure chocolate – it tastes really good.

“It’s zero calorie, so could also be used as a diet tool.

“But chocolate is only the beginning – we’re going to be unveiling more different types of food in the future.

“Two Michelin-starred chef Thierry Marx is even working with us to develop meals, such as a mint-flavoured inhaler to go alongside his lamb dishes.

“Eventually we could be having three course meals this way.”

I was about to transmit a Libertarian Alliance Easter Message 2009. But this stuff really, really pissed me off. Sorry. Maybe it will come later, or maybe you’ll all just have lost out this time, because of “David Edwards”, described as a “Harvard Professor”. (His problem is that his institution is a bit, well, post-Rennaissance…)

David Davis

Now then, look here…..sonny. When you need to eat chocolate, you need to __EAT__ it. All right then? Not just “smell” it, you scumbag lefty rationing bastard: you bite it, chrunch it, chew it. Look, you bugger: poor-people pay for people like you to have what you think is a job. So do something more useful, like getting all us humans to Mars in time for the polar bears to die on camers for Al Gore. Even including lifting all the poor people, whom you despise and don’t really like very much ‘coz they don’t drive Bentleys, OK?

Better you go and break stones with a mallet all day, in the Chinese Highlands or somewhere where they are building a power station or 512.
