BREAKING NEWS: After much jockeying by the Irish Football Association, Ireland’s Prime Ministe

BREAKING NEWS:

After much jockeying by the Irish Football Association, Ireland’s Prime Minister, Ireland’s Minister for Sport, Ireland’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Ireland Coach Giovanni Trapattoni, football fans the world over (except maybe in France), and following much conjecture on the part international media outlets, FIFA has decided to deny a match replay of the world cup qualifier played between France and Ireland on November 18th 2009.

It was fairly certain from the outset that this would in fact be the governing body’s decision, though it does once more raise the very appropriate question: Do football referees require video replay to help them make decisions of particular importance? While no real blame can be place on either Henry or the officiating, the system of on-field officiating is in need of an overhaul. Former France international David Ginola has repeatedly called for a goal judge to be stationed behind the net to facilitate a fairer adjudication on ‘goals’ of question. Unfortunately these requests have fallen on deaf ears. This ‘hand of god’ play has re-sparked rumours that video replay is necessary in football, and that it should have been tested along the road to South Africa so as to ascertain its true value. While such a system was never installed, one can only hope that at FIFA’s next executive council summit the world’s football associations will put pressure on the international federation to implement video replay, or something similar, for the World Cup in 2010, so as to cut down on results achieved through foul play.

I’m just on my way to Bruges now after having ordered a return ticket and enquired which platform the train departs from, all in French. I do struggle a bit with mimicking the accent but I think that’s partly because I resent having to.

You see it’s perfectly acceptable for David Ginola to turn up on Match of The Day’s World Cup coverage, flick his flowing locks a few times, wink at Des and then proceed to knock out excellent standard English but with a completely blatant French accent. So why is the reverse considered uncouth. I’d love to be fluent but say everything in a ‘mad for it style’, that’d get right on their nerves.

26 Euros for a return, not too bad but maybe a little pricey when it’s only an hour away. It may transpire that it could work out to be cheaper to have got an interrail ticket, or a series of different interrail tickets. The problem is with the amount of complicated options available married to the endless possibilities and variables of my route, it’s basically a bastard to work out. So I’m winging it and hoping I get lucky.

The first place I visited was the Our Lady’s Church with the building itself being pretty good but the paintings, sculptures and carvings it houses being the real treat. There was one 16th century sculpture of The Madonna (I knew mad Madge was getting on a bit but that shocked me that did) and Child by Michelangelo that was particularly good.

After that I went up The Belfort which should be 8 Euros to over 25s but the lady decided to charge me the under 25s price of 4 Euros so I wasn’t complaining. It was quite the walk up the 366 steps in cramped conditions but it gave a good view of the city rooftops when I finally got there. Just before the top I had a little rest in a small room as there was a sign up saying the different tunes that would be played every quarter hour by the bell I think (but that doesn’t sound right?), anyway at half past it was supposed to be ‘Oh Danny Boy’ and it was only 5 minutes off so I hung about, it never materialised though.

Next up I had a look round the Salvador Dali Museum-Gallery adjacent to the Belfry, 8 Euros in on a student card. It was quite small so I wasn’t there too long but I enjoyed it, surrealism appeals to me.

Lastly I sampled a little bag of authentic Belgian chocolates from Chocolaterie De Burg. Yum and yum once more is all I can say, beaut they was.

So all in all even though I was only there a short while I managed to squeeze a fair bit in and I warmed to Bruges. It’s a very pretty city but still nothing has come close to the beauty of Praha for me.

The journey home doesn’t look like it’s going to be much fun, the aisles of a pretty long train are jam packed never mind the seating and there is a baby screaming like I’ve never heard, I reckon it’s possessed. Still, only an hour. Actually, a load of people have got off in Gent so my gluteus maximus is now happily parked on a seat.

PS I know it’s a lame post title today but since when has that bothered me, or you. I don’t even like the flick.

Just watched Newcastle trounce Man U 5-0 on ESPN Classic…. probably the best day of my life…. lol. Took me back to being a kid, playin footy on the school field, generally pissin about, and how much I would like to be back there sometimes. Gonna go looking on ebay for a Ginola shirt from the 96/97 season now in a desperate attempt to relive my youth…. size XL with no moth eaten bits on it either. Ill be a lucky man.

Expecting this week to be a tough one but a good one. Studio time, new radio show, continuing to pull my finger out and learning to drive, and 5 DJ gigs. Sometimes I think Im lucky, other times I think Im mad. Probably be back on on Monday, weekend is gonna be mad with work. Supporting my fellow Geordie comrade Baron Von Alias this weekend at Other Rooms, anyone in the area should come and check us out before I move on to my usual Saturday slot at Envy.

Eleven - The Magic Number Here’s my Ultimate Eleven. Let me know what you think of it! Formati

Eleven - The Magic Number

Here’s my Ultimate Eleven. Let me know what you think of it!

Formation-wise, I was toying with a 3-5-2 formation with wing-backs, mainly because Roberto Carlos is without a doubt the best attacking full back i’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Also, if you add John Terry as an extra centre-back, the defence would have been solid as a rock. However, the absence of an attacking right-back of similar quality to Roberto Carlos, and the inability to include anyone from the veritable smorgasbord of exciting wingers I’ve seen over the years, made me favour the more traditional 4-4-2 formation.

If it wasn’t for a five month spell living in Madrid back in 2004, I’m very aware that my team would be totally different. However, I was lucky enough to be in the Spanish capital when the ‘Galacticos’ era was in full swing, which is why four players from that Real Madrid team (Casillas, Roberto Carlos, Figo, and Zidane) make it into my XI. Unlike their team though, mine would conquer because it has, in my opinion, two world-class centre halves and the best defensive midfielder I’ve seen in 20 years following the game – Patrick Vieira (only Dunga and Makalele come close to him and, as a Spurs fan that’s tough to admit!).

That isn’t to say that my team lacks flair. Not in the slightest. With Figo and Ginola providing the width and wizardry on the flanks, and Zidane in his best position (operating behind the strikers), they’d provide plenty of goals from midfield and ammunition for the two strikers.

Picking two strikers was the most difficult decision I had to make, mainly because the list of players I could choose from was so massive! However, I wanted a partnership – two players who would work well with each other. It was important that one of them was an intelligent footballer, with a good eye for a pass, and the ability to drop a little deeper to link up with Zidane and the wingers. I managed to get the list down to the following players: Ronaldo (the fat one), Sheringham, Berbatov, Rooney, Raul, Etoo, Owen, Shearer, Henry.

I decided that Sheringham was going the play the slightly withdrawn role, that was a pretty easy decision, and I was seriously considering pairing him up with his old ‘SAS’ strike-partner Alan Shearer. However, Thierry Henry was incredible at Arsenal, probably the best player ever seen in the Premier League, and I felt the team needed a little more pace. Sheringham and Henry, that’ll do just fine!

Goalkeeper: Iker Casillas – Now regarded as one of the best in the world, Casillas is treated like a golden-boy in Madrid, in the same way that Raul is. A product of the youth academy, he made his debut for Los Blancos at 19, and hasn’t looked back since. Combining incredible agility with a terrific ability to command his area, this guy would have kept so many more clean sheets in his carreer if it wasn’t for his club’s ability to ignore the value of quality players in defence. I wanted to pick Peter Schmeichel, but I never saw him live, and I reckon he’s by far a better goalkeeper than James and Barthez.

Right Back: Christan Panucci – I haven’t seen too many outstanding right backs in my time. It’s the sort of position where, if you do a good job, you’re not noticed by the fans – you just quietly get on with it. Panucci is different though. He comes from an era in Italy that produced a whole plethora of fine defenders (including the likes of Maldini, Costacurta, Cannavaro, Nesta), and I have always been hugely impressed by not only his versatility (he can play superbly in any position across the back-line), but also his stamina, and determination to stick to his task. Like most of those aforementioned players, Panucci never relied on pace to defend, meaning that he is still playing at the top level, despite being nearly 36 years old. I’ve only seen him live once, and eventhough Roma lost 4-2 that day, I was hugely impressed by him.

Centre Half: Sol Campbell – When Campbell left Tottenham for Arsenal back in 2001 I, like all Spurs fans, was (to say the least) upset. Sure, the fact that our captain and product of our academy gone to our deadliest rivals was shocking (and I still don’t forgive him for that), but the real pain was caused by the harsh truth that he was simply too good for us at the time he left, and it would take years to properly replace him. He was the ultimate ‘powerhouse’ centre-half, but he was quick too. Whenever I saw him play for Spurs he would win absolutely everything in the air, and I imagine he’d be a total nightmare to play against. Fine, he was never the most graceful with the ball at his feet, but playing at Arsenal improved this side of his game greatly. A classic old fashioned centre half, which is a must for any team in my opinion. It always makes me laugh that he started life at Spurs as a striker!

Centre Half: Ledley King – Every Tottenham fan knows that, when fit, Ledley is in the top five centre halves in the world. He really is that good – better than Terry, better than Ferdinand, I have absolutley no doubt about that. However, I don’t want to start a debate about that (it’s just what I believe), as I know that most non-Spurs fans won’t see it that way, because the simple truth is that no-one has seen him play anywhere near enough in the last few years. His career has been ruined by injury, and he doesn’t look like he’s going to recover. Horrible news, but I’ve been lucky enough to have watched him when he was fit, and at his very best. Thierry Henry once described King as the only defender in the league able to match him for pace and still tackle him fairly. This highlights two of King’s best attributes – searing pace, and the timing of a Swiss clock in a challenge. He really has it all though, and is so comfortable on the ball that Sven Goran Eriksson deemed him good enough to play in midfield for England. Paired alongside Campbell, I think it gives me the perfect combination.

Left Back: Roberto Carlos – As I suggested above, Roberto Carlos isn’t really a proper left-back. I’d much rather have pretended that I’ve watched Paolo Maldini, and just whack him in the team (plus, I wouldn’t need any description as to why I’ve chosen him), but I’d be breaking my own rules so I’ve resisted. Having said all of that, Roberto Carlos played as a left back (albeit an attacking one) in a flat back four for almost every team he has played for, so he has the same role in my team. What I find most interesting about Roberto Carlos is that he was almost plagued by a stunning free-kick he scored in a friendly tournament back in 1997, as many fans just remember him for that. I remember him for his superb raiding runs down the left, as it was virtually impossible to stop him when he was on song. He redesigned the role of the full-back in the 90s and, when you put him up against the likes of Clive Wilson, Paolo Tramezanni and Justin Edinburgh, he’s a shoe-in!

Defensive Midfield: Patrick Vieira – I saw Vieira in his pomp, when Arsenal’s ‘invincibles’ travelled to the Lane to win the 2003/04 Premier League title, in a 2-2 draw. Vieira finished off an excellent move to score that day, and it was the first time I’d seen him in the flesh. What a player he was. Arsenal have never fully recovered since losing him. Defensive midfielders are a rare commodity, well the good ones are anyway, and Vieira wins his place in my team simply because he had more strings to his bow than Makalele.

Attacking Midfield: Zinedine Zidane – Magnificent. The best player I’ve ever seen, hands down, and I expect that to stay that way for quite some time. I don’t mean to do him any diservice by not saying any more about him, but I really don’t think I need to. Most people are aware of this man’s genius. If you aren’t, just go to YouTube, and check out the multitude of compilation videos dedicated to the great man. I feel privelidged to have seen him play. A legend.

Right Wing: Luis Figo – Left or right, it doesn’t matter with Figo, as long as he’s hugging a touchline. One of the best players in recent memories, he was actually the best of that Madrid bunch in the 2003/04 season. He tormented defenders with his dribbling ability and, as David Seaman will remember, was a master at scoring with long-range piledrivers. With Beckham, Joaquin, and Cristiano Ronaldo all in the running for this spot in my team, I’ve gone with Figo because he consistently performed throughout an illustious carreer that has spanned almost 20 years.

Left Wing: David Ginola – Ginola was contesting this position with Brazilian winger Denilson (not the one currently at Arsenal), because I wanted a bit of fun in the team. I wanted a player who plays with a smile on their face, maybe doesn’t do a huge amount defensively, but is a crowd pleaser and puts entertaining the supporters high on the agenda. Ginola wins because he was so consitently good at Spurs, and was a shining light in a very dark period for the club. Denilson was great fun to watch, but you can’t help but look back at his career and see it as a failiure, given the promise he showed in his youth at the 1998 World Cup.

Striker: Teddy Sheringham – Sheringham is definitely the best player i’ve seen in the withdrawn striker role. Like Campbell, he was too good for Tottenham (eventhough he loved the club), and when he moved to Manchester United he got the recognition he deserved from the media, and won the medals he craved (the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup). A clever player who created just as many goals as he scored, other strikers just loved to play with him. Shearer was the beneficiary in Euro 96, and the best example of Sheringham’s ability can be seen in this clip of England’s destruction of Holland.

Striker: Thierry Henry – Man Utd fans will say that Cantona is the best ever Premier League striker. Arsenal fans will tell you that Henry deserves the award, and Newcastle fans will tell you Shearer is better than both. I’m not interested in that discussion. Henry was awesome, and he has the pace that my team needs. He and Sheringham would tear teams apart, that’s what matters.

Let me know what you think of my team below, and please send your Ultimate Elevens to me at eddiesfootballblog@hotmail.co.uk, and I will put as many of them up on the site as possible.

In order to celebrate the long-running American soap’s twenty years of broadcasting in France, a few castmembers of The Young And The Restless will spend a week in Paris this month to film a few episodes and a couple of French celebrities will have guest starring roles, namely former soccer player David Ginola and Lorie, pretty much France’s equivalent to Britney/Christina/Jessica/Mandy/…

Lorie, pictured below, will play a French celeb who comes in for a magazine photoshoot (what a stretch). Lorie is a lovely young girl, but her career seems to be running out of steam in France recently, so I guess it’s logical for her to attempt to go international, but why in God’s name would she choose The Young And The Restless as her platform? Do you believe it could bring her American fame?

No real surprises in the list of nominees for this season’s PFA Player of the Year Award, although M

No real surprises in the list of nominees for this season’s PFA Player of the Year Award, although Michael Essien is unlucky to have missed out, and Cesc Fabregas hasn’t exactly been in scintillating form since the turn of the year (although his goal against Bolton at the weekend finally justified his continued inclusion in my fantasy football team).

My only gripe with the PFA Awards is that they are announced so early. This season the gongs will be handed out on April 22nd, before the destinations of the Premiership, FA Cup or Champions League have been decided. Suppose Didier Drogba scores a further ten goals to secure the Quadruple for Chelsea, but Cristiano Ronaldo has already received the award?

It’s happened before. In 1999 David Ginola won it, despite the contributions of players like David Beckham and Roy Keane in securing United the Treble. In 2002 Ruud van Nistelrooy got the nod, but it was Arsenal’s Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry who plundered the silverware as they inspired Arsenal to Arsene Wenger’s second Double.

The big problem with the PFA Awards is that the players vote for them months before the end of the season. I think I’m right in saying that the votes are gathered around the turn of the year, which gives a massive advantage to players who start the season strongly (such as Fabregas) but fails to acknowledge the contribution of players such as Dimitar Berbatov who find their form in the second half of the season.

It’s also interesting that Wayne Rooney has once again been nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award – an award he’s won for the past two seasons – but has missed out on a nomination for the senior award. Ronaldo and Fabregas have both stepped up. Let’s hope Rooney uses their example to spur him on to greater things next season.

What’s another year? An end of year celebration would not be complete without the customary

What’s another year?

An end of year celebration would not be complete without the customary ‘awards ceremony’. Goddle knows it’s been a fairly pathetic year for Spurs but there is more to football than Spurs thankfully, so I’ll have something slightly upbeat to write about in this issue.

Premiership Awards 2000

Team of the year – Manchester United

The Premiership long stopped becoming a challenge for the boys from Old Trafford, but you can only begrudgingly admire the complete domination that they have imposed on the top league in the England, and as some laughably would like us to believe, the best in Europe (snigger).

When Liverpool were scoring own-goals, Leeds were fading, Arsenal were selling their best players and Chelsea were sacking their most successful manager ever, Manchester United sat pretty firmly on top of the league for nearly the entire twelve months just past, and having a good laugh at those below them. And rightly so.

The wheels of this impressive tank may not come off until Alex Ferguson retires, and the rest of the footballing world can only pray that it all comes tumbling down and we can share the success around a bit more.

Runners up: Ipswich Town, Arsenal.

Player of the year – David Beckham

Not that I rate this guy as highly as others seem to, but there is no doubt that he stands pretty much head and shoulders above pretty much everybody else in the Premiership. He is undoubtedly one of the best crossers of the ball in the world, a terrific direct passer and possesses wonderful vision which nets him some cracking goals. Personally I think he needs to add tackling to his repertoire and improve his temperament, but in the world of the Premiership he will always be the top dog.

Just don’t think of moving outside of Old Trafford pal.

Runners up: Harry Kewell, Steve Carr

Manager of the year – George Burley

Ok so they’ve only been in the Premiership since August, but Ipswich have taken it by storm, and the man at the helm deserves huge credit for it. Burley spent four years trying to get his team promoted, beaten in the play-offs three years in a row, but persistence has paid off for him, and faith has paid off for the fans and the board.

European football is a real target for Ipswich this season which is remarkable for a side built on a shoestring budget, but a top half finish will still be a terrific season for them. Hopefully they can build on it like Leicester and Derby, and cement their position in the top division.

Runners up: Peter Reid, Bobby Robson

The Premiership XI (v.2000)

Lets take a look at what my select Premiership XI would look like.

(Goalkeeper)

Fabien Barthez (Man Utd) (GK)

When Man Utd signed the French #1 in the summer, there was much surprise that they had spent the guts of 8m to secure the flamboyant stopper. But after two high-profile gaffs (Bosnich and Taibli), United finally got a consistent man to put between the sticks. Barthez has distinguished himself with some top notch saves in his time at Old Trafford. Ok, so it’s not the busiest job in the league but you can only save what the opponents throw at you.

(Right Back)

Steve Carr (Spurs)

Spurs right-back Carr is without doubt the most improved player in the top division over the last two seasons. He has earned his name as a defender of immense ability and commitment. Also notable are his half dozen goals in a Spurs shirt, most of which are completely top drawer.

(Left Back)

Silvinho (Arsenal)

The cultured Brazilian had rather large shoes to fill when he slotted in on the left hand side of the Arsenal defence – that held by Nigel Winterburn for over a decade. Well his feet are probably quite small, but he still managed to fill those shoes rather impressively.

(Central Defenders)

Marcel Desailly (Chelsea)

Desailly may not really try very hard in a Chelsea shirt but he still stands out as a world class defender with the ability to make the difficult look easy (and sometimes vice versa!). I’ll be surprised if he stays at the Bridge past this summer but he has definitely been one of the foreign import success stories.

Jaap Stam (Man Utd)

Despite suffering injury most of this season, Stam established himself in the previous year as one of the Premiership’s top central defenders. The Dutchman combines power, pace and strong tackling abilities to ward off the Premiership’s top marksmen. The jury may still be out on his ability to compete in the Champions League, but time will tell whether he can shine on that platform too.

(Defensive Midfielder)

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool)

A product of the Liverpool youth system, the tenacious Gerrard has already made himself an Anfield regular as well as put himself well into the frame for a starting place in the England midfield (mind you lets consider the fact that he’ll be selected ahead of international jokes like Ince, Batty and Wise). At only 20 years old, Gerrard has an amazing career ahead of him.

(Attacking midfielder)

Nolberto Solano (Newcastle)

The Peruvian midfielder has been a revelation at St James Park and the attentions of Europe’s great clubs are sure to lure him away before too long. The compact playmaker is involved in everything that is good at Newcastle in recent months and his loss will be probably the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Watch…

(Right Midfield)

David Beckham (Man Utd)

There is no better crosser or passer of the ball than Mr Thong himself. Beckham has warded off the unwanted attention gained from the “Argentina Conflict” in 1998 and finally won over the public with a multitude of consistent displays. He’s been working hard to control his temperament and so far is succeeding. Is destined to be a Premiership great but I await his international move to see how he fairs in Serie A.

(Left Midfield)

Ryan Giggs (Man Utd)

Lets face it, he is the top winger in the Premiership, and only for his injury proneness would be probably the top player in the league altogether. Staggering goals, blinding runs and a surprisingly strong creative vibe means Giggs will continue to prosper for United, and mourn the day he chose to play international football for Wales. Them the breaks.

(Strikers)

Teddy Sheringham (Man Utd)

The Manchester United domination continues (hey, that’s why they walk away with the league every year). The signing of Sheringham from Spurs in 1996 was scoffed at by large amounts of United fans but the wily veteran has been a crucial cog in the United steamroller which has dominated in the last 4 seasons. At 34, Sheringham is still banging in the goals, maybe enjoying his most successful season ever. Surely this is his last? Is it?

Marcus Stewart (Ipswich)

Ok, so he didn’t cost 10m, doesn’t play in front of 50,000 supporters every week and a casual football fan may have never heard of him prior to this season. But Marcus Stewart has scored 16 goals and been the main reason that Ipswich have propelled themselves up the league at a rate of knots. We don’t know whether or not Stewart is capable of keeping up this form, as surely a dip in form by the team will result in him struggling to score (or vice versa). But as of now, when it comes to pre-match team talks, he’s the one all opposing managers are talking about.

The way they would line out

Notable mentions

And those people who just don’t quite make it:

Goalkeepers – Neil Sullivan (Spurs), Tim Flowers (Leicester)

Defenders – Dean Richards (Southampton), Jamie Clapham (Ipswich), Sol Campbell (Spurs)

Midfielders – Patrick Vieira (Arsenal), Mark Kinsella (Charlton), Paul Scholes (Man Utd), Gus Poyet (Chelsea)

Strikers – Thierry Henry (Arsenal), Emile Heskey (Liverpool), Paulo Di Canio (West Ham)

Turkey time!

I’d love to praise everyone, I really would. But there are some players who just, well, don’t perform. Here are the Top 10 Turkeys of the Season.

10. Paul Gascoigne (Everton)

After joining from Middlesboro last season, not too much was expected of Gazza at Everton. But despite the obvious, you might still expect him to grab this opportunity with both hands, right? Not a chance. Gazza has shown the usual flashes of genius that brought some hilarious momentum for one brief day in the press for him to be recalled to the England squad followed by more injuries. He’s barely been on the pitch for the last 2 months. Walter Smith must be criticised for the gamble he took in signing Gazza. He could have spent 2m quid on David Thompson instead and perhaps he’d be available to select once in a while.

9. Georgie Kinkladze (Derby)

The former Manchester City wizard brought his wand back to Pride Park last season but, sadly, has failed to perform and has also suffered from injuries and conditioning problems. Used sparingly, Kinkladze can be an asset to the team, but his days as a top flight performer look numbered. Look for him to move on very soon I would think.

8. David James (Aston Villa)

To call James an enigma would be to do enigmas a disservice. After distinguishing himself with a series of howlers at Anfield, the born again goalkeeper has managed to repeat the feat at Villa Park. The jewel in the crown was his stunning faux pas which all but handed the FA Cup to Chelsea last May. There’s been others this year and despite John Gregory’s best intentions, his defending of the accident-prone keeper is not fooling anyone. And as for that “transfer request” earlier this season, please…

7. Winston Bogarde (Chelsea)

He’s Dutch! He’s free! He used to play for Barcelona! It doesn’t matter because the last player to be signed by former Chelsea manager Luca Vialli, looks like he’ll be one of the first out the door. He’s barely played since signing and it is obvious that he is over the hill at the relatively young age of 31. What is it about Dutch players prematurely losing their ability….?

6. Denis Bergkamp (Arsenal)

Speaking of which… Bergkamp has failed to feature much in Arsenal’s starting XI this season so it was a shock when he signed a new, lucrative 3 year deal just a few weeks ago. Arsenal fans have acknowledged that the strikers best days are behind him (rather oddly at only 31) and they may not be too pleased to see him being made one of the best paid players at the club when the money might be better spent on developing the youth players. But Denis will be laughing all the way to the bank no doubt.

5. Sergei Rebrov (Spurs)

The Ukrainian hot shot was rated as one of the best in Europe prior to his £11m move from Dynamo Kiev. Now a lot of people have probably forgotten who he is. He lit the Champions League up season after season, now he partners 22 year old former Dulwich Hamlet striker, Dave McEwan, up-front for Spurs. A move away from Spurs looks likely at the end of the season and no doubt he’ll begin to play again at that point.

4. Sylvian Wiltord (Arsenal)

He made his name in Euro 2000 by coming off the bench to save the French in the last minute of the final. Roll forward a few months and Arsene Wenger was suitably impressed to spend £13m on him. So far he has not made his mark, but Arsenal players are famous for taking time to settle in (Henry, Bergkamp). But needless to say it’s a lot of money to spend on someone who is going to sit on the bench 50% of the time.

3. Benito Carbone (Bradford)

So just how many clubs can Carbone get kicked out of – Sheffield Wed, Villa and now Bradford. Chairman Geoffrey Richmond called Carbone “the most exciting transfer in the history of the club”. Exciting for Carbone who has made about three quarters of a million pounds from his short stay so far. It’s not that Carbone hasn’t got talent, he just doesn’t have as much as he thinks he does.

2. David Ginola (Aston Villa)

The Spurs hero was shoved out unceremoniously by then-manager, George Graham. The 33 year old took an unrequested and unwanted move to Aston Villa for £3m pounds with John Gregory promising to build his team around his mercurial French star. But since then, the world has turned, and Ginola has been accused of being “fat and unfit” by his manager followed by being called “a laughing stock” after putting in an embarrassing performance at home to Liverpool last week. Ginola needs to do what he hasn’t done for 18 months – perform well and work hard. Otherwise he’ll find himself playing 2nd division football in his home country.

1. Stan Collymore (Bradford)

Haven’t we been here before? Collymore can’t settle in at Forest, moves to Liverpool. Can’t settle in at Anfield, takes the trip to Villa Park. Has a nervous breakdown, moves to Leicester for a nominal fee and scores a hat trick. But starts demanding more money and gets shipped out to Bradford. For free. Moans some more about not being paid enough and is about to move on again. I frown on any club which spends money on this utter joke of a player. Go to hell, Collymore!

And finally…

After watching Sunderland v Bradford today (the second best team in the country against the worst team in the top tier), I could only shake my head. The Premiership has been called the best league in Europe but it clearly is far from that.

As Man United run away with the league once again, the poor standard of the chasing pack was highlighted today by second place Sunderland’s inability to break down the team who are by far the worst in the league. It’s this lack of competition that has led to the league becoming boring and predictable. Most of the recognised high quality players play for either United or Arsenal with Liverpool, Leeds and Chelsea sharing a smaller number of quality players, and more than a fair share of filler material.

On a related note, apparently giving 100k a week to Beckham is worth it as it makes the Premiership a better place? Well that’s not true. Ship out Beckham, sell Keane, exchange Stam for Breen. Lets level the playing field a bit and make the Premiership a more interesting place to be.

The desperate analogy-ridden introduction

Poor old George Graham, it seems, can do nothing right. The man with a PhD in Advanced Arsenal Studies has switched courses but so far his results have been considered below par by the shareholders of the THFC College that he attends. His head lecturer, Sir Alan Sugar, has been impressed enough to hand him a sizeable kitty to buy some study aids, after he brought home a wonderful award called “The Worthington Cup” in his first year, and consolidated his marks in year two.

Now in what could be his final year, the pressure is on for him to deliver above average results, and his fellow students also know that the shareholders will not tolerate mediocrity.

Brass tacks

Getting down to brass tacks, George has improved the Spurs squad considerably in the time since he arrived. Crucial areas of weakness have been addressed, some with more success than others. The jewel in the crown is of course is the world-class Sergei Rebrov, but the purchases of Tim Sherwood, Chris Perry, Neil Sullivan and Ben Thatcher should all be considered big steps in the right direction.

To a lesser extent, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Mauricio Tarrico and Steffen Freund have also been key parts of Spurs best performances last season and will have their parts to play this season. Of course room needed to be made for these new recruits and the departures of Allan Nielsen, Espen Baardsen, and of course, David Ginola, have been met with mixed responses from the fans.

Ginoless

And with Ginola gone, it seems from reports, that Spurs are changing their style of play. The long hopeful lobs to Ginola’s chest are a thing of the past, and a slow, patient passing game has evolved apparently. I think in the half dozen games or so that I saw on TV last season, I was never impressed by Ginola and the way he affected the game. Everything seemed to go through him, but unlike Glenn Hoddle 18 years previous, Ginola didn’t have the class to use it efficiently. Once he was closed down and his arsenal of tricks evaporated, the result was the Frenchman on the floor waving his arms, and the opponents storming towards the Tottenham goal.

Who’s gonna play

And because Daveeed has departed, I expect better things from Spurs this season, although I don’t think it’ll be inside the top six. We seem to have a stronger goalkeeper in Neil Sullivan, and he’s playing behind two highly-rated full-backs – 1999/2000 Spurs Player of the Year, Steve Carr, and newly-recruited, Ben Thatcher – and the centre-back pairing of Sol Campbell and Chris Perry.

The key phrase in midfield is hard work (verk?). Darren Anderton needs to come out of his shell and express himself for the first time in over four seasons – he is the key man. Tim Sherwood was a picture of inconsistency last season, but a lot of this was due to his lingering hernia problem. When on form, Sherwood is a powerful all-rounder.

Alongside him will probably be Steffen Freund – the combative, intimidating, hard-tackling, free-scoring midfielder. Ha. The last one is a joke. Just like David Howells, Freund makes up for his lack of ability with a whole-hearted and fully-committed approach. He’s not the hottest property on the market, but he’s critical to the defensive unit.

The left-side will be the major headache for George. Matty Etherington will get a few games, but Oyvind Leonhardsen looks to be the number one choice right now. Leo performed well early last season before injury decimated his season. He’s known to be not fond of playing out-of-position on the left, and who could blame him. He’s probably the weak link due to this. Personally I think George should give Tarrico a game on the left, but it might not happen unless Leo continues his injury curse.

It’s either a drought or a flood up front for Spurs. After struggling not long ago with two half-fit strikers, we now have four hungry and reasonably high quality players vying for two positions. Rebrov of course is an instant choice, and it seems Steffen “twenty grand a week please” Iversen will partner him. The more logical choice would be a target man like Les Ferdinand to play alongside the Ukrainian, and I wouldn’t dismiss this as an unlikely occurrence in the next few weeks.

What I expect?

I expect Spurs to finish around 8th position, with the usual mid-season lull sometime over the Christmas period. The star performers will be Carr, Rebrov, Anderton and my wild card, Ferdinand.

Expect the goals to be divided equally enough – Rebrov (11), Iversen (9), Ferdinand (9) and Sherwood, Leonhardsen and Anderton to divide roughly 20 goals between them.

The FA Cup will be a disaster with a fourth round exit against Premiership rivals, Everton. A semi-final defeat against Leicester in the Worthington Cup is likely (Leicester are the only team legally allowed to win the competition I think).

And finally…

It’s time somebody stood up for Ruel Fox. He refuses to leave Spurs because they won’t compensate him for taking a 60% wage cut to join West Brom. For this, he has received a lot of unfair criticism. The guy is 32, has maybe 4 years left earning decent money. It’s a short career, and Fox is sensible in refusing to bow to pressure within the club for him to move on. At the end of his contract, he’ll still get a decent move to a first division club and won’t have lost a penny. I still think he’s rubbish, of course.
