The HORRORS of bad hair…

Can I just say that there has been so much good music come out in the last few months that I can barely keep up. And the past 2 weeks I’ve bought a TON of new music. I can’t seem to stop downloading and I have bought several really good albums and numerous singles. So let’s get to it, shall we? Goodbye summer! Hello to falling leaves, cooler temperatures and Halloween sights & sounds…

The Horrors – “Whole New Way” (alternative rock)
With a distinct 80’s alternative throwback sound, this track is bouncy and neat. And with a name like The Horrors, it HAS to be cool…right?

Will Hoge – “Long Gone” (rock)
This guy can do no wrong. As far as passionate writing and rocking are concerned, Hoge is what rock & roll SHOULD be…raw & unabashed.

AFI – “Beautiful Thieves” (alternative rock)
With a sound that’s melodic but with more punch, this band has quite a few songs on this album that sounded pretty good, but I went with this track and “End Transmission” and wasn’t disappointed in either.

David Grey – “Fugitive” (Pop)
“White Ladder” was one of my favorite albums of this decade and this track is an amazing song. I just wish the entire album sounded as good as this! But if you like uplifting music, you can’t go wrong with Grey.

Animal Kingdom – “Tin Man” (alternative)
This week’s alternative freebie of the week on ITunes. And I LOVE IT!!! Go download it right now before it’s not free anymore and then check out the album. I plan on purchasing it as soon as I get some disposable funds…

Mariah Carey – “More Than Just Friends” (R&B/Pop)
It’s pop music and it is all starting to sound alike, however this track is like a little slice of Mary J, Brandy and Janet all tied together. I dunno who is stealing from who, but this song has hit written all over it!

Kris Allen – “Live Like We’re Dying” (Pop)
Last seasons American Idol winner breaks out his first single and I was thinking it was gonna be the pop version of the Tim McGraw hit, but it’s not. But it IS pop music and it’s nothing spectacular, however it is listenable enough and should do okay on the pop charts. My kids will probably LOVE it.

Foo Fighters – “Wheels” (rock)
With a Greatest Hits disk on the way, this is one of the new tracks to appear on the upcoming release. Not my favorite Foo song, but it is definitely better than a lot of rock out there! Is there anything Dave Grohl CAN’T do? Nobody does rock like this guy…seriously.

Wave Machines – “Keep The Lights On” (alt-pop)
My brother recommended this track to me and it has a Scissor Sister kinda sound to it. Easy on the ears and kinda disco-ish. I dig it!

The Bravery – “Slow Poison” (alternative)
AWESOME track from this band. I really liked their last album and have high hopes for this upcoming CD. However be warned…I saw them live and they were terrible. A studio band in it’s best form and this song is really cool.

Death Cab For Cutie – “Meet Me On The Equinox” (alternative)
Can you say “Rush”? Because that is exactly what this song sounds like. With Ben Gibbard doing his best Geddy Lee impersonation, I totally forgot I was listening to DCFC. If this song had rocked more, I wouldn’t have even known. Still, for DCFC fans, this won’t disappoint.

The xx – “Crystalised” (alternative)
Everyone and their sister is raving about this band and the new album. I downloaded this track in hopes that it would grow on me..and it did. But not enough to make me wanna spill for the entire set. But this is a pretty good song and I can see why people are into it.

THROWBACK SONG OF THE WEEK: Peter Gabriel – “That Voice Again”
I heard this track playing while I was at dinner with some friends the other day and I couldn’t get it out of my head. Off the classic CD “So”, this is the hidden gem on the album!

ALBUMS OF THE WEEK:

Pearl Jam – “Backspacer”
Eddie and the boys are back and rocking (sort of) like the old days. The first few tracks are unadulterated rock but then the album settles in and becomes a look inward as Vedder & Co are apt to do. I particularly like the songs “Amongst The Waves” & “Just Breathe”. But if you are a Pearl Jam fan, this album needs to be bought in it’s entirety.

Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johannsen – “Break Up”
Yorn released a disk earlier this year that I was sorely disappointed in. With every passing album, he was getting farther & farther away from the greatness of “musicforthemorningafter”. But THIS album brings him back in a BIG way. With Johanssen as his muse, he is definitely back in form! Their voices go very well together and there are quite a few really good tracks. My favorite song is “Blackie’s Dead”, which is the rocker of the group, but you can’t really go wrong with any of them. 2 thumbs up for this one and the ladies will LOVE it!

Kid Cudi – “Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day”
I dunno what’s up with the title but I can say this…if Kanye West disappears into the rapper abyss, this guy will step right up. Although not as charged up as West, Cudi has a distinct style that appeals to me. He uses a lot of different genres of music and has a nice flow. Not overpowering by any means and easy to listen too for those who don’t get the heavy rap. I like “Alive (Nightmare)”, “Day & Nite” and “Up Up & Away”.

The Lovemakers – “Let’s Be Friends”
I dunno what I was thinking. This was an impulse buy and I liked the snippets that I listened too but overall this was a pretty weak album. But in it’s defense, I haven’t really been giving it much of a chance. I liked the other 3 albums so much that it kinda got shuffled beneath everything else. But it’s alternative-pop in the same vein as VHS Or Beta but not as good. If you want to sample, try “Where Did You Go?” or “Let’s be Friends”.

“DIRTY AS ALL HELL AND DON’T DOWNLOAD IF YOU DON’T HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR ABOUT SEXUAL MATTER” TRACK OF THE WEEK:
Steel Panther – “The Shocker”
If you don’t know what “the shocker” is, then this song can enlighten you. However be aware, it IS very offensive and VERY funny! Sounding like “enter hairband of the 80’s here”, this band rocks along the lines of The Darkness or Jack Black’s band, Tenacious D. There are many tracks on the album “Feel The Steel” that are hysterical and really sound like typical hairband songs, but it’s the dirty lyrics that set it apart…and in this genre it is a welcome breath of fresh air!

“IT MIGHT BE GOOD BUT I’M KINDA OVER THEM ALREADY” CD of the Week: Alice In Chains – “Black Gives Way To Blue”
It’s not the band’s fault. They are just doing what they do. But I wore Alice out in the 90’s and I just don’t have the time to go listening to them again. Sorry guys…Pearl Jam has taken up that space left over from that time period.

I imagine I will be reviewing the new release from Paramore on the next edition of Tunes From ITunes. Check back and see what I think of the new one from a band that I think has tons of potential!

Does anybody remember why we invaded Iraq in the first place?  Our dear President George W. Bush told the public that there were “weapons of mass destruction” in Iraq.  The Republican Party justified our invasion because Saddam Hussein was a “bad man”  – “He killed masses of people in their sports arenas!” they said!  “We had to take Saddam out, the killing just has to stop.”

So, we invaded Iraq.  We killed Saddam and his two sons.  But that wasn’t good enough to leave the country.  President Bush insisted that we had to stay – “until the country could hold fair elections”.  And the rest is history – “we have to stay”, “we had to fight for freedom in that country”, blah blah blah…

How come it’s always easier to sell War than it is to sell Peace?

In September of last year, Gays Without Borders blogged a staggering list of gay and lesbian people who’ve been murdered in the streets and in barbershops (no less).   The religious leaders of Iraq have declared a holy fatwa on all of Iraq’s GLBT citizens including: killing of lesbians and gays in the “worst, most severe way possible.”

To make matters worse, heterosexuals who have friends that are gay are being targeted and executed:

Heterosexual friends of gays are also executed. This happened to Majid Sahi, a 28-year-old civil engineer who was not gay but had been helping Iraqi LGBT members in Baghdad. Majid was abducted from his home by Badr Corps members, and his family was told he was kidnapped because of his “immoral behavior” in helping Iraqi gays. His body was found with bullet wounds to the back of his head on February 23, 2007.

According to Iraqi LGBT, a small non-profit group in London, UK, is sounding the alarm that over 128 Iraqi peole have been rounded up and the government has announced that executions – in groups of 20 – are expected to begin this week in Bagdad.

“Death penalty has been increasing at an alarming rate in Iraq since the new Iraqi regime reintroduced it in August 2004.  In 2008 at least 285 people were sentenced to death, and at least 34 executed. In 2007 at least 199 people were sentenced to death and 33 were executed, while in 2006 at least 65 people were put to death. The actual figures could be much higher as there are no official statistics for the number of prisoners facing execution,” he said.

Is this the “peace” and “freedom” that President Bush promised both the American and the Iraqi people?  This is his idea of “freedom”?

The United Nations has confirmed the killings in a report published in January ‘09 by the United Nations Assistance Monitoring in Iraqi (UNAMI).

Iraqi LGBT posted this yesterday:

Urgent action is needed to halt the execution of 128 prisoners on death row in Iraq. Many of those awaiting execution were convicted for the ‘crime’ of homosexuality, according to IRAQI-LGBT, a UK based organisation of Iraqis supporting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Iraq.

According to Ali Hili of IRAQI-LGBT, the Iraqi authorities plan to start executing them in batches of 20 from this week.

If Saddam Houssein was so terrible… How is this getting any better?

David Grey, a film director, produced a short-film for the Village Film called “Queer Fear – Gay Life, Gay Death in Iraq“, you must click on it and watch.  It is 9:17 long.

Yesterday, the Obama administration responded to Iraqi LGBT’s news by noting on its “change.gov” website that the President is aware of it, he insists the Office of the President and Congress address this issue as quickly as possible.  The piece also noted that it was just a few weeks ago when US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton said publicly:

Human rights is and always will be one of the pillars of our foreign policy. And in particular, the persecution and discrimination against gays and lesbians is something that we take very seriously. It is terribly unfortunate that right now in unfortunately many places in the world violence against gays and lesbians, certainly discrimination and prejudice are not just occurring but condoned and protected. And we would hope that over the next few years we could have some influence in trying to change those attitudes…

Who is going to take a guess with me by saying it’ll be the first 20 gay people who are executed before anybody from any government does something to stop anymore executions.  They’re all going to sit on their hands until the first twenty are dangling at the end of their respective ropes before the US, the UK or the Canadians do anything to stop this atrocity.  Oh wait!  Who am I kidding?  285 gay Iraqis were killed last year alone!  Why should 120 additional executed GLBT Iraqis get any government to do anything?

The second festival, The O2 Wireless Festival 2006 played in both, Hyde Park and Harewood House, Leeds. The Hyde Park festival ran from the 21 June to 25 June, 2006. The event headliners were The Strokes, David Grey, Massive Attack, James Blunt and Depeche Mode. Other performers included Belle & Sebastian, KT Tunstall, The Flaming Lips, Pharrell, Goldfrapp, The Raconteurs, Dirty Pretty Things and Gnarls Barkley.

The Harewood House festival ran from 24 June to 25 June 2006. Massive Attack, Goldfrapp, DJ Shadow, Pharrell, Gnarls Barkley, and Terry Callier performed on the first day. The Who, Super Furry Animals, The Flaming Lips, The Zutons and Eels performed on the second day.

         De cele mai multe ori vrei să te cerţi doar pentru împăcare sau vrei să stârneşti un conflict doar ca să vezi cât de mult îi pasă sau îţi pasă. Eu una mi-am dat seamă chiar în mijlocul furtunii interioare, că nu e nevoie de un lucru negativ precum cearta pentru a conştientiza ceva pozitiv precum intensitatea cu care ţii la cineva.
