As a kind of follow-up to the post I made yesterday, I’ve just read about a collaborative work that Mr. LaChapelle has entered into alongside Daimler to promote the new Maybach Zeppelin.

In a series of photoshoots literally dripping with LaChapelle’s signature oeuvre, the acclaimed photographer taps into Nazi decadence circa 1932 alongside bare, broken-furniture-littered landscapes for his images, featuring the latest Zeppelin model as well as a 1931 Zeppelin DS 8.

Although I was less than favourable about his Cars & Money exhibition, I actually like these shots. To be truthful, I have always been a fan of LaChapelle’s hyper-real, saturated photography ever since I studied fashion photography at university. As I have already stated (but never mind, I’m saying it again) I am just less than impressed at his attempts at fine art, as participating in projects with carmakers whose products cost several hundred thousand pounds who then pay him millions for his work is sort of at odds with his anti-capitalist message.

Recently opened at Wolfgang Roth and Partners Fine Art in Miami is “Cars and Money: new works by David LaChapelle”. A showing of two significant new collections from one of the world’s most recognisable fashion and fine art photographers in which he examines the concepts of money, status and luxury he has been so instrumental in building.

Can’t say it’s definitely a must see – the so-called ‘meaning’ behind each piece seems a little contrived and obvious. The image above of the banknote is meant to depict the negative impact of money on our society… so what has LaChapelle done? Taken an image of money and, wait for it… overlaid a NEGATIVE image of a banknote over the top. Inspired, I think you’ll agree. The car images are supposed to make the viewer re-think their concept of luxury within the 21st Century, but I fail to see how collaged images of car parts is supposed to do that.

Lest we forget that LaChapelle has worked for some of the world’s biggest designer brands, including Tommy Hilfiger, Louis Vuitton, L’Oreal and Diesel, as well as editorial photoshoots for the likes of GQ, Vogue and Vanity Fair. As a clear exponent of consumer-led designer lifestyles, who is he to dictate to us the apparent evils of high-end capitalism and consumerism? It’s fairly obvious that he has himself reaped the monetary benefits of such lifestyles, so is it not very hypocritical to then preach through the medium of ‘fine art’ that it’s all bad, even in the name of satire?

Even LaChapelle’s books are outrageously expensive – his 2006 volume ‘Artists & Prostitutes’ is still retailing on Amazon for over $3,000.

Looking at works such as this and that of other en-vogue artists such as Hirst begs the question – why does art these days have to come with some sub-text/comment about the world in which we live? Do classic paintings such as the Mona Lisa or Waterlilies come with some footnote about how they represent the systematic cultural raping of the working class or the slow appropriation of foreign cultural values by large corporations in a cynical attempt to make money, or are they, as I suspect, classic works made by talented people in an attempt to simply capture beauty?

Complex keeps things interesting

When I get drunk and talk about the death of magazines, every Wednesday, I’m mostly lamenting the death of the job market and the PR-approved pap that we’ve come to punch John Lahr in the face with and call profile pieces. But what can I say. I’ve written the shit myself. Mostly because I’m green, but also because I’m easy. You pick your battles so you can pick up your groceries. But the other side of the editorial/production coin is that mags nowadays, those stalwart print survivors still holding it down at your local magazine rack, aren’t just always saying something lame or late, they’re getting kind of uglier too, aren’t they?

This is not an across the board criticism, but really — aside from the consistently lively Complex (above), and I guess maybe Vanity Fair — where have all the exciting photoshoots gone? Is Nylon what we have? (And that’s not a snarky rhetorical, if I’m ignoring the obvious answers let me know.) I saw the Monnaie’s David Lachapelle exhibit earlier this year and I guess yeah, his kind of fully conceived and lushly executed celebrity snapshots have become the territory of retrospectives. “The apocalypse is sold to us on television,” said Lachapelle, and maybe that’s what’s missing — photographers as artists, as pop theorists, as pretentious blowhards, as megalomanical personalities who will sit Tupac fucking Shakur in a goddamn bubblebath, or make Courtney Love hold a Kurt Cobain lookalike in a dead Christ pose; where every inch of the frame is bursting with inspired mise-en-scene and genuine oh shit moments. Someone who doesn’t just snap shots of celebrities, but captures and even crafts pop culture.

I’m maybe asking too much. Naturally, budget slashes in the print world, in the whole world, make these shoots near impossible (we all know how liberal Annie Leibovitz was with her budgets) and these photographers too expensive. Also, the New World Order of iron-fisted PR grips the photographer’s hands as they do the writer’s, and who are they to have to fight that battle for everyone else, I guess. And maybe all the wonderful up-and-coming shutterbugs have either revolted against our tabloid culture and opted to follow around politicians or some shit, can you blame them? Or they just gave in and became full-blown papparozzos. But I can’t let everyone off the hook here though, because really, you can do it with a camera and an idea. With a face. The faces are always there. What are we to do with some of these photoshoots that take genuinely beautiful people and make them plastic and computer-generated? The non-artistic Photoshopping has got to stop, people, because if you can’t stir even a semi with your half-naked Leighton Meester photos, you’ve failed. Epic fail.

How did we let Maxim change things so thoroughly?

We can’t do much about all that up there, and perhaps it’s not even worth it to. But what we can do is call for more creativity. For more giving a shit. I don’t mean to pick on Empire here, but can we? Let’s take a look at Empire. For the mag’s 20th anniversary they got a bunch of stars to revisit their most iconic performances. Which sounds great. Awesome concept. But it’s all concept and no execution. Which I suppose is fitting for today’s film landscape, where Hollywood is all about the fucking pitch and the opening weekend numbers and damn everything else. Pitch, pitch, pitch. Films about boardgames. Photos about movies.

Here is Matt Damon as Jason Bourne. Bored ol’ Jason Bourne. Nice little plug for the magazine. Nice little fly-swatter, really.

And here’s Jack Nicholson’s most iconic movie role. You know, that one where he smiles like Jack Nicholson.

I guess you don’t have to try to channel their most iconic performances, because they only have one. So fuck even painting a lightning bolt on the kid, let’s just sit them on a bench. Then again, Radcliffe does mystery, Grint does affable, and Watson does that thing you don’t like to talk about — perfect summary of the franchise. I guess.

Hey, remember that time Christian Bale glowered? That was an awesome movie. What was it called. No, the other one.

I think you see where I’m going. And I didn’t even mention the dreary backdrops, not even once. There are more here, some of them not that bad. But none of them great. Where was I? Let’s start giving a shit again. I will with my writing — I’m all about that from this point on. But so much of our new media landscape navel-gazing already happens on the editorial side. Pretty pages are about the only thing keeping magazines vital and exciting, and a nice package that can be sold as a commodity itself might be the only thing that keeps them interesting in the future. Without the pictures, what’s the point anymore?

Clare Quilty – Snow White

Now-defunct Charlottesville, VA rockers Clare Quilty have a cool, industrial-cum-punk, girl-fronted sound like Garbage or Snake River Conspiracy. They took their name from the character in the Nabokov novel and subsequent film adapations (in which his part was considerably beefed up) of Lolita. It seems that they parted ways after just a couple albums. I’ll come back to them another day because they had a cool sound and I’m not totally clear on what happened with their breakup (it was news to me when I went to grab their official site link and it was down … then when I cruised the wiki, it said they’d split).

This track, “Snow White,” comes from their second LP, Strong, and at first seems to be about getting murdered during rape, but I think if you listen carefully there’s a case to be made that it’s actually about a twisted relationship, or just some good old-fashioned masochistic consensual sex.

I met David Lachapelle last night. The David Lachapelle. I remember taking his photo series “Burning down the House” featuring Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow to art class when I was in 9th grade as part of my homework assignment. If you could pinpoint a moment when I started showing an interest in fashion, that would probably be the closest thing to it.

It was the tidbits that were the best. Him telling us that Andy Warhol was extremely religious right before his death and went to church every Sunday, that Madonna was the meanest person to photograph.  And this “…I love fashion, I love beauty, but when it becomes everything it is decadent living.” He condenses it so well. The struggle, the successes, the mania, the overindulgence, the eventual withdrawal to a Hawaiian jungle, and now…the legacy?

Fast forward a few more hours and I’m at Armin. My first rave experience you know, was with Armin. There’s been a few times in between but I think last night was the best yet. Bubbles, confetti, pyrotechnics, a bouncing hydraulic floor, it was a great party.

*Sigh* Really great party.

All these thoughts swirling, mixing, coagulating in my mind. There’s a message in there somewhere.

“It’s My Life” is a song by the British synthpop band Talk Talk. In 2003, No Doubt recorded a cover version of the song to promote their greatest hits album The Singles 1992–2003. Because the band was on hiatus, while lead singer Gwen Stefani recorded her solo debut album Love. Angel. Music. Baby., they decided to record a cover to avoid having to write a new song. The band listened to hundreds of songs and narrowed it down to “It’s My Life” and INXS‘ 1982 song “Don’t Change“.

No Doubt had doubts on recording a cover and contemplated writing new material. However, they decided on “It’s My Life” after rehearsing it with producer Nellee Hooper, referring to it as a “feel good” song. The track was nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal at the 47th Grammy Awards.

Chart Performance

The cover was successful in the United States, reaching number ten on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and remaining on the chart for twenty-eight weeks. It was moderately successful on adult contemporary stations, reaching number twenty on the Adult Contemporary chart, but had high longevity and appeared atop the Adult Top 40’s recurrent chart. The single was more successful in clubs, peaking at number sixteen on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart, and had some play on modern rock stations, reaching number thirty-two on the Modern Rock Tracks. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the digital download gold for selling half a million copies.

On the UK Singles Chart, “It’s My Life” debuted at number twenty but was unable to reach a higher position until it was released with a remix of the No Doubt song Bathwater which boasted the single up to number 17. The single dropped off the chart after seven weeks. It was more of a success across Europe, reaching the top ten in Italy, Finland, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden and the top twenty in Austria, Belgium, France, and Switzerland. The single reached number seven on the ARIA Singles Chart, lasting seventeen weeks on the chart, and was listed at number eighty-one on the 2004 end-of-year chart. The Australian Recording Industry Association certified the single platinum in 2004 for shipping 70,000 copies.

Music Video

The 1930s-style music video was directed by David LaChapelle. In the song’s music video, Stefani portrays a black widow whose look closely resembles that of actress Jean Harlow, who is put on trial and sentenced to die for the murders of three men she knew, portrayed by the other members of the band. In between the death scenes are scenes of Stefani in court and being dragged to the gas chamber where she is executed. The video ends with the three murder victims in the afterlife, laughing and watching her televised execution.

The music video was moderately successful on video chart programs. On MTV’s Total Request Live, it reached number seven in November 2003 and was on the countdown as late as January 2004. The video peaked at number eight on MuchMusic’s Countdown and remained on the program through March 2004. At the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, “It’s My Life” won the awards for Best Group Video and Best Pop Video. It also received nominations for Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Art Direction^.

The Remixes

Stuart Price, producer and remixer of artists like Madonna, Missy Elliott, The Killers, Gwen Stefani, Seal, and Keane, created the Thin White Duke mix of “It’s My Life”, which won the award for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical. This version was featured on the video game Karaoke Revolution Volume 2. On December 9, 2008 it was also made available as downloadable content for the Rock Band series.

The Chocolate O’Brian Remix was produced by Stephen Bradley and Dave Tweedie. Bradley plays the trumpet, keyboard, and is a backup singer for No Doubt. In addition to his work with No Doubt, he collaborated with Green Day, Gwen Stefani, Sugar Ray as well as performing with Outkast, Black Eyed Peas, The Specials, Sly and Robbie, Sting, Bounty Killer, Eve, Phantom Planet, and Josh Groban. In 2002 Tweedie and Bradley formed Chocolate O’Brian Productions.

I don’t have producer information on The Great People Club Remix. If anybody does, please let me know and I will add it. As far as I know, this version is commercially unavailable on compact disc.

¿Alguien que tenga conexión a Internet no se ha enterado de la censura sufrida en la MTV por un videoclip de Enrique Iglesias? Si la respuesta es que sí seguramente se debe a que todavía hay personas que sólo leen noticias serias en la prensa o que directamente tiene un filtro instalado que le impide leer cualquier tipo de información con las palabras sexo, onanismo, masturbación, o directamente, con el nombre de Enrique Iglesias.

Para el resto de internatuas que navegan sin filtros, la noticia ya es conocida. Enrique Iglesias grabó un videoclip en el año 2000 para promocionar una versión del tema Sad eyes, de Bruce Springsteen. Enriquito se pasó con la idea de hacer un vídeo “hot”, caliente, de alto contenido sexual o como se quiera decir. Es que ya ha superado el calentamiento de los vídeos de reggeaton, se puso las botas el tío.

En el videoclip Enrique Iglesias es uno de tantos usuarios de líneas eróticas que hay repartidos por el mundo (muchos más de los que afirman llamar a teléfonos eróticos). Parece ser que le gusta la mujer que está sola en la televisión -en uno de los canales que sintoniza en la habitación de un hotel donde se hospeda-, hecho que jode el romanticismo de escuchar sólo la voz, algo que a los clásicos les gusta. Y una cosa lleva a la otra, la mujer del teléfono/televisión erótico le gusta más por momentos y acaba por practicar el onanismo, que es la manera fina de decir que se masturba, que es la manera fina de decir…

Pero aquí no acaba la cosa; si para la MTV ya fue demasiado ver a Enrique Iglesias con el rostro de placer mientras se toquetea los bajos, resulta que sale del hotel donde está hospedado -hay que quitar de los hoteles las televisiones que canales eróticos o al final la MTV no emitirá ningún videoclip más- y por el camino, después de librarse de las fans, se encuentra con una de esas señoritas a las que les sobra el amor y a las que les falta el dinero para comprarse ropa de abrigo: una pilingui, que es una manera fina de decir prostituta, que es a su vez una manera fina de decir…

A Enriquito no sólo le gustan las mujeres de las líneas eróticas, las pilinguis también. Así que se la lleva al hotel y practica el acto sexual con ella, que es una manera fina de decir que se la beneficia, que es una manera fina de decir que se la cepilla, que es, aunque no lo parezca, una manera fina de decir… Total, que tanto sexo, en solitario y en pareja, no fue la mejor manera de convencer a la MTV para que emitiera el videoclip (que aunque no se ha dicho hasta ahora, fue dirigido por David LaChapelle, para el que quiera saberlo). Nueve años después el señor LaChapelle ha decidido colgar en su página web el videoclip.

El que quiera verlo puede hacerlo también en la noticia publicada en la edición digital de Informativos Telecinco. Sí, es raro que Telecinco emita un vídeo con sexo, se sale de su línea editorial. Pero tampoco se ve nada del otro mundo. Menos para los puritanos que decidieron que en la MTV a Enrique Iglesias se le saca vestido, pero con una pilingui en la cama o masturbándose mientras ve a una mujer por televisión no.

Ojo, no se le ve nada a Enrique que no se le pueda ver si va a la playa y se pone un bañador. Bueno, se le ve el culo, pero nada más. Lo suficiente para no haberlo podido emitir por la MTV. Que parece un canal de televisión  muy enrollado, pero cuando se ponen tiquismiquis son como los directivos de la FCC (Federal Communications Commission), a la que ya se le han dedicado varias canciones muy bonitas (una de Eric Idle, ex componente de los Monty Phyton, y otra en uno de los episodios de Padre de Familia o Family Guy):

No deja de ser curioso cómo en EE.UU., como dice Eric Idle en su canción homenaje a la FCC, no hay libertad de expresión. Así pasa, que ven a Enrique Iglesias masturbándose y censura el vídeo. La duda final es si la censura se debió a que se estaba masturbando y después cepillándose a una prostituta o a porque era Enrique Iglesia el protagonista del vídeo.

My absoulte favorite photographer is David Lachapelle.

Hace tan sólo 24 horas habríamos preferido arrancarnos las pestañas a hablar de Enrique Iglesias. Que secretamente lloremos con Hero no es motivo suficiente para reconocerle ningún tipo de interés. No obstante, esta web es una mala zorra que se vende al mejor postor, y Enrique hoy es tendencia. Este tipo de cosas es lo que hace grande al mundo del pop: da igual que estés muriéndote de hambre, que no tengas talento o que te hayan desahuciado; de repente llega un anuncio o el vídeo de una boda o una actuación en X Factor y tu canción vuelve a serlo todo durante un par de días. Magia, es simplemente magia.

En este caso el detonante es una masturbación. Resulta que acaba de publicarse un vídeo censurado hace 9 años (ni que viviéramos en China) en el que Enrique suda entre las sábanas y tiene una alucinación muy de peli porno indie: una disertación sobre la soledad y sobre cómo no hay nada que una buena puta no pueda solucionar. En este caso el papel de prostituta lo interpreta Katy Perry, pero hay algo romántico en la historia, no sólo se trata de enrollarse en la bañera (fantástico plano por cierto). Enrique se empalma enamora de ella viéndola por la tele y decide irse a dar un baño de multitudes para aliviarse. Él llora, la puta llora, sus fans lloran. SAD EYES.

Pero finalmente se encuentra con la chica de la tele, ¿puede haber algo más bonito? Sí, que la polla de Enrique se convierte en una barra americana (dorada) a la que Katy se encarama en el que es sin duda uno de los momentazos pop del año.

Evidentemente toda esta salsa no se le ocurrió a Enrique, sino a David LaChapelle, un absoluto genio que ya ha creado tendencia (el vídeo de Bad romance es un claro ejemplo) con su fantástica saturación de colores y su tratamiento del erotismo supersucio pero a la vez tremendamente estilizado y glamourizado. Nadie como él embellece lo grotesco y en este caso ha conseguido que escuchemos entera la espantosa versión pachanga del tema de Bruce Springsteen. Que ya tiene mérito.

Suyos son por ejemplo iconos de la cultura pop como Loverboy (impagable), Dirrty o Everytime (pondríamos links pero os los sabéis de memoria), que dentro de las chorradas de la diva de turno, comparten una estética excesiva, esperpéntica y sobre todo superficial. LaChapelle es uno de esos artistas que consiguen pasarse por el forro las intenciones de las estrellas y siempre hacen un trabajo incisivo, sugerente y lleno de personalidad. Vamos, un mariquita con pretensiones que un día se fue al NYFA y acabó rediseñando la cultura pop. Su siguiente proyecto es Men in this town, el próximo vídeo de Shakira. Oh. Sí. Nena.

Ao longo de 2010 o THE PORTFOLIO PROJECT e a Casa da Esquina apresentarão, durante 45 semanas, o ciclo de Cinema e Fotografia “5ª de imagens” que abordará as diferentes formas de interacção entre imagem fotográfica e cinematográfica no grande ecrã.
No primeiro trimestre do ano o ciclo revela quatro fotógrafos que também são cineastas – William Klein, Raymond Depardon, Agnès Varda e David LaChapelle – que constituirão o ponto de partida para a reflexão sobre a cumplicidade entre as duas práticas artísticas.
Nos meses seguintes a programação apresentará documentários sobre consagrados fotógrafos internacionais entre os quais Henri-Cartier Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Annie Leibovitz, Leni Riefenstahl, Nobuyoshi Araki e James Nachtwey bem como filmes de ficção em que o papel da fotografia ou do fotógrafo tenha um relevo especial.

O acesso à referida programação será totalmente gratuito para os membros do THE PORTFOLIO PROJECT e todas as projecções serão seguidas de uma conversa informal entre os espectadores.

As sessões terão lugar todas as 5ªs feiras, exceptuando durante o mês de Agosto, às 22 horas na Casa da Esquina, em Coimbra.

Lady Gaga made quite the appearance at the Accessories Council of Excellence Awards on Monday. She was there as the recipient of the Stylemaker award. Presented by Marc Jacobs, she came onto stage through a cloud of talcum powder she flung ahead of herself. She gave a ten minute speech mentioning Jacobs, Alenxander McQueen, Stephan Gan, David Lachapelle and Hedi Slimane as her supporters. Also, Lady Gaga announced that the “House of Gaga is not an economy,” and that we shouldn’t expect a line. Was about a perfume though?

Before he was a photographer to the stars, and ex-assistant to David LaChapelle, Kenneth Cappello was a punk rock kid who grew up skateboarding in Houston.

Capello’s book, Acid Drop is a collection of  snapshots from his childhood depicting a group of friends skateboarding while growing up in Texas in the late 1980s.
