Phallic-Head Plate, 1536 and Cucuteni Phalus representaion, 3000 BC

PHALLUS

The phallus can refer to a penis, or to anything shaped like one. The ancient Egyptians have Osiris, the Greeks have Hermes, ancient Japan have the Mara Kannon Shrine (麻羅観音) in Nagato, ancient Romans have the talismans, ancient Scandinavia the Norse god Freyr, and ancient India have Shiva -phallic structures symbolized wellness and good health in many ancient cultures, Dubai nowadays has more than one, and they should add that to the list of its achievements in the “most” highest of this, and the “most” tallest of that, the “most” hottest of this, and the “most” modern city of the world -it’s also now the “most” cluttered city with phallic symbols that will surely make the Pharaohs and the greek gods blush.

NO MAN NEEDS NOTHING

“I think you are another of these desert-loving English: Doughty, Stanhope, Gordon of Khartoum. No Arab loves the desert. We love water and green trees, there is nothing in the desert. No man needs nothing.” quoting Prince Feisal played by Alec Guinness in 1962’s Lawrence of Arabia, an epic film about a flamboyant and controversial British military figure T.E. Lawrence in Saudi Arabia. A great film by David Lean that reminds me how flamboyant the desert could be if you let the Brits use your city as a blank canvas for their architectural playground.

Besides missing the best Pakistani dish I ever had, the sprawling nightlife, and warm Dubai hospitality, having lived there for 2 years, I miss also how quickly Dubai skyline changes every time my eyes blink, it’s a “closet-gay-man’s-Disneyland-filled-with man-made-penis-buildings”. Reaching a record high 512.1m (1,680 ft) 141 storeys, Burj Dubai is the tallest building in the world now and according to EMAAR Chairman Alabbar “A human achievement without equal”, I would like to add to that Mr. Chairman… Dubai is the city of men where homosexuality is illegal and now “the most visible male genitalia in outer space” without equal (size queens!).

This is how I discovered the rarest of diamonds amidst the privations of T.E. Lawrence’s deser

This is how I discovered the rarest of diamonds amidst the privations of T.E. Lawrence’s desert sands and Yuri Zhivago’s Soviet snowdrifts. I found the “Holy Grail” of cinematic rarity, Let Me Count the Ways. It is harder, because, though it was apparently utterly lost, it has become known to me that it is not extinct, it is just unfound; and it seems to me that we need, at the very least, to exert the effort of setting up a radio-telescopic complex to find this cinematic needle in the haystack of our earthly backyard.

Consider David Lean in 1962. The reigning God of the Cinematic World. The director of Lawrence of Arabia, a film of such undeniable excellence that even Hollywood cannot find some way to snub it. The studios give Lean leave to “walk on water” as it were. He is given carte blanche, a nearly open budget, yet again. And great films follow.

We get into the early seventies. Lean has had several triumphs, but nothing like Lawrence. Fickle now become the studios with their largesse. A river of money still runs to David Lean, but it is finite and it is spent. There is Doctor Zhivago, a success by any measure, and yet the river of gold is running dry. And then of course Michael’s Day becomes Ryan’s Daughter, the greatest disaster movie ever made, though not in the normal sense.

Why is this important? Well, after Lawrence, Lean worked on his pet project, Let Me Count The Ways. He eventually employed much of the cast of Zhivago, but the cash had withered – to the extent that there was only one copy struck of Let Me Count the Ways.

In the early 1970s Lean arranged for two gala showings of the film, first in London, then shortly afterwards in Dublin. Well, gala it turned out not to be; the movie was shown at the obscurest hole-in-the-wall in London, but I happened across it there, most fortuitously, with a hundred or so people in the small theater. Fortunately, Lean insisted upon and got a first rate sound system. I then followed the print to Dublin, where the theater was larger, but the audience rowdier. The greatest misfortune, however, was that the projectionist more than shared in the groundling-like rowdiness of the Dublin-suburban audience: he drank, he fell asleep, the projector caught fire, the theater caught fire, and the reputedly unique movie burned.

The feverish notes I made in my journal those two nights follow.

* * *

Portsmouth, 1899. Ian Culpepper (Tom Courtenay) is supervising kite flying boys on the esplanade. There are towering clouds in the sky, the winds are brisk, there are whitecaps on the grey surf, and ships and boats everywhere. In the next scene he enters a waterfront hotel; there is a display of model ships in the lobby, one of which is of a seven-masted frigate. (A small plaque identifies it as the work of Prof. Ian Culpepper, Uxbridge). He then enters a spacious tearoom, generously fenestrated towards the waterfront, and sits down with a Clara Westcott (Geraldine Chaplin). She is enthusiastic about some conic sections she is analyzing on papers which are spread out before her amidst teapot, teacups, biscuits, and teacakes. She tells Ian that she has a great deal of interest in the way that triangles intersect, to which Ian answers that he is still engaged to Cacilie Fuerstenried of Munich but things may change when he goes there to visit in the summer. The exposition is helped along by the entrance of Lord Stride (Dirk Bogarde), a pretentious nobleman who is the uncle and guardian of Miss Westcott. Clara introduces Ian as a Professor of German at a public (very private) boys’ school in Uxbridge. She also tells Lord Stride that Ian is responsible for the wonderful ship models in the lobby, to which Lord Stride answers, “Perhaps, we may call you ‘Mr. Ships.’” Ian is not amused, but I was.

Lord Stride, boor though he is, is justly proud, and just as protective, of Clara. He calls her the Princess of the Parallelograms. It is obvious that she is an amateur mathematician in the mold of Ada Lovelace-Byron who was the helper of Charles Babbage as a precursor of the modern computer. It is also apparent that Lord Stride fancies himself a kind of Lord Byron. Unfortunately it would have been a Byron who outlived any of his genius.

It is a very long movie, but in it there are many settings and many seasons. The soundtrack is by Maurice Jarre at his most luxuriant, and he has an unprecedented three main themes for this film, rather than his usual, just one. There is a lot of period music too: Elgar, Delius, Wagner, Mahler, and all of the Strausses.

The central part of the film is in Central Europe, Munich to be exact. A lot of it takes place around the Odeonsplatz and the Hofgarten, just like in the beginning of T.S. Eliot’s “Wasteland.” Ian is sitting at an outdoor table with Cacilie (pronounced Ka-seal-ia) Fuerstenried (Maria Schell) and her friend Katia Pringsheim (Rita Tushingham). Dear Clara, as beguiling as she was back in England, has completely faded from the consciousness of Ian, who has rededicated himself to Cacilie.

Meanwhile in the Englischer Garten, near the “Pagoda” on the Kleinhesseloher See, Siegfried Wagner (Oskar Werner) is flirting with Thomas Mann (Omar Sharif). Cosima Wagner (Margaret Rutherford), travelling incognito, leads Siegfried away by the table: “It’s back to Bayreuth with you, young man!” Chastened and actually quite relieved, Mann returns to the Hofgarten where he joins Ian, Clara, and Katia, who is his fiancée. He pulls out a big manuscript from his briefcase and begins reading, to the delight of everyone. The leaves are falling and Munich is at its zenith.

It is February, 1900. Clara and Lord Stride have just returned from St. Petersburg where they did a lot of troika riding. She goes up to Uxbridge and is furious to learn that Ian has not broken off his engagement with Clara. Through her uncle she has Ian brought up on charges of espionage. There is a closed hearing before the admiralty, presided over by Lord Hammersmith (Alec Guiness). Clara arranged for Ian’s ship models to be subpoenaed for evidence of naval espionage; at the same time, Clara presents mathematically derived information that a British heir to the throne will be assassinated in 1910 and that war with Austria will be the result. It becomes obvious to all that Clara is deeply disturbed, and Ian is acquitted, but nevertheless loses his job.

Some years later, the daughter of Clara comes to visit the son of Cacilie and Ian in a beautiful mountain and lake setting in the Eastern Austro-Hungarian Empire. Ian is still hurt by the way he was treated in London, but eventually becomes charmed by the girl who has a letter of apology from her mother. There is peace all around. It is spring, 1914, in Sarajevo.

* * *

As I made my escape from the conflagration in the Dublin theater, I opened the glass case outside, by the ticket booth, with the intention of saving the sole poster advertising the movie. To my surprise, I found it was not a poster, but a painting. Not long afterwards, I sat in a Dublin pub, with none other than the great Lion Lean licking his wounds nearby. He confided in a fellow named Robert that there was one other copy of Let Me Count the Ways, but it soon became impossible for me to discern any more over the rudely indifferent chatter of the other patrons. The knowledge that the film has survived is both the lodestone and bane of my existence.

The summer ended recently. It’s the beginning of a new season. WTF do I talk about? I can’t do a rev

The summer ended recently. It’s the beginning of a new season. WTF do I talk about? I can’t do a review of the year as I haven’t had this site for a whole year. Nor has the calender year ended. And I’m not much for World Series or NFL predictions or prognostication. Go Yankees! Guess I’ll just see where the keyboard and my imagination takes me.

I recently rented a film from the deep dark past. I mention it now, as some of you might be preparing for winter’s onslaught – some of you have already experienced a preview of winter’s snow, ice, and the likelihood was that you weren’t ready for it. Imagine going a baseball game in Denver in a parka . At least Denver’s baseball worries have ended.

My girl friend in Harbin, China once told me the weather there wasn’t so bad — on one particular day, in a past winter, her local temperatures hit a high of 6° and a low of minus 12°F. And she said, “Not so bad — this is better than usual!” I mention this just to set the scene. But we aren’t going to Harbin. Or discussing Harbin’s Ice Festival. What we will talk about in this column truly has a light and warm air about it.

Well, the title of the movie I rented was Summertime. It was released in 1955, and the story is simple. An American spinster’s dream of romance finally becomes a bittersweet reality when she meets a handsome but married Italian man while vacationing in Venice.

Katherine Hepburn plays Jane Hudson, the middle aged American woman who will experience the ’sexual revolution’ of the 1950’s with her leading man Rossano Brazzi’s Renaldo, a quiet yet broadminded and lonely married man.

What a film! Yes, it is summer, in Venice — romance is in the air — and it’s all smashingly filmed in glorious Technicolor. The flavors and passions of Venetian nights simmer deliciously. What could be better than a quick look at another time of the year — when some of us need to escape the real winter storms and those that are yet to come, bringing those fierce cold snaps that will keep us indoors?

To complete the picture of many a wonderful summer experience, long since passed, I will throw in some fabulous Venetian scenes as painted by Mark Pettit. The art is stunning in its detail as the sun makes everything alive and warm in Pettit’s realistic yet idealized Venice aka Serenissima. Below Is Venetian Colors…

… followed by Gondolas

Following below this text is Riva del Vin (top) and Touring the Grand Canal (bottom). There’s no doubt that the artist has captured Venice in all its glory, right down to the sunlight glinting of the water. These are simply superb paintings.

David Lean directed Summertime, and the movie glows with life and warmth. The evening scene of Jane and Renaldo lying together as the sun sets over Lido is breathtaking and wouldn’t we all like to be right there right now?

For more breathtaking beauty in the world that you know, with an occasional foray elsewhere, you’ll find it all available for your delight on the pages right here at The Arts - JustMeMike’s New Blog. For now we will say a fond arriverdici to the fabulous Serenissima that is Venezia, Italy. But in our next column, we will say hello to some glorious sights that do not require a gondola or a gondolier to get you there.

I must tell you how important it is to have enough space. As many you are apartment dwellers, you’ll

I must tell you how important it is to have enough space. As many you are apartment dwellers, you’ll be able to identify with this. Eventually you run out of storage space. You may out-grow some of your clothes, or you just tire of them, so you buy new clothes.

Meanwhile, your books, CD’s, and DVD collections continue to grow. Your collection is too big for your present set of bookcases and storage racks for your media. So the overage gets moved into your closets, competing for space with your coats and shoes, etc.

But someday, you will have to let them go.

Why did I toss them?

Here’s why. The need for space is paramount for a city dweller. And when one’s girlfriend complains about not being able to walk into the walk-in closet and hang up her coat, something had to be done, and something had to go. Would you believe four boxes of videos?

Yup, they’ve been carefully carted away by the New York Sanitation Department. No doubt a good many of you have similar issues with your magazine, VHS, and DVD collections. You too may have to deal with this question of space someday.

Speaking of spaces — and most of us need more — I’m reminded of two major films, both of which were epics, and both directed by David Lean, and both won Oscars. The titles are Lawrence of Arabia (1962), and Doctor Zhivago (1965).

In these films, Lean positions his cameras in places where the magnitude of the open spaces and the majestic scope of the land dwarf individual men as well as mankind. You can see it in these images.

Scenes of shimmering deserts, soaring mountains, frozen tundra, and majestic forests all serve as backdrops to the stories of T E Lawrence and Dr. Zhivago and his love, Lara.

These films carted off many Oscars, and unlike my recently discarded videos, have withstood the test of time by retaining spaces in our hearts and minds for about 48 years for Lawrence, and only a few less than that for Zhivago.

I still need more space, but the situation is no longer critical. Our usual array of topics may or may not take up more page space than we thought going in.

Other topics may also may have distinct spatial problems — specifically asking me to find them after they been stored for so long in some dark and hard to reach recesses or synapses of my brain .

However don’t be dismayed. To have a look at some fine examples of subjects in and about the arts, you won’t need to trek across frozen Siberian wastelands, nor the Arabian deserts – just read this column on occasion.

1962: Lawrence of Arabia di David Lean

note:

Moonlight, shadows, and frangipani fluttering in air rich with the smell of curry — many people today might harbor such images of India trending toward those seen David Lean’s film, “A Passage to India,” based on E. M. Forster’s novel of the same name.

And yet, to anyone who’s spent time on the ground in certain countries around the globe, an untold backstory surges against the gorgeous scenery, the nights filled with starry skies, the nattering of songbirds in the morning, and the kaleidoscope of colors in the flower gardens.

And the English women who acted as pillars of the British Raj found themselves in a backstory like no other in history.

Women at a Party in Mumbai, 1910

To survive the transition between the known world and the unknown, these women who sailed out to India after marrying men stationed there with British Raj soon found that they yearned for books like Chota Mem’s [Mrs. C. Lang] The English Bride in India (1909, second edition). And they needed them. Badly. Desperately.

The cantonments, military outposts, filled up with young, inexperienced, wives, without knowledgeable mothers nearby, desperate for some guidance in the affairs of the household. Especially households teetering on the edge of what they considered civilization. Which the cantonments often were.

And there everything changed for these women.

For one thing, India’s caste system decreed that each British household required many servants, that one or two not just would do, because of the restrictions of caste. In the words of Margaret MacMillian in Women of the Raj, “Brahmins generally did not act as cooks because so much European food would have been polluting to them.”

Old Bungalow of the British Raj (Photo credit: Sugas Dutta)

Here’s what Mrs. Lang, speaking in the authoritative voice of Chota Mem (Junior Memsahib), has to say about cooks:

As a rule, Indian cooks are excellent, and you will be surprised what nice dishes they make out of a little, and my first cook, although expensive, cooked beautifully, and it was extraordinary the few kitchen utensils he managed with. He used a bottle for a rolling pin and two pieces of wire for an egg wisk, etc.

It is best when you engage your cook to let him go to the bazaar, and get what utensils he wants, and you will laugh when you see his purchases of spoons made out of cocoanut shells, a very rough looking chopper, and one or two knives, etc.

Believe me it is no use providing them with the good things you would give an English cook, so it is best to let them cook in their own way, provided they are clean.

As to cooking pots, aluminum are best, and for many years I used a large-size camping set (13 pieces) and three other large degchies [pots]. The camp set is very useful for moves, as every piece fits into each other, and takes up so little room. The cook will want in the cook-house, one, and if room, two nice tables, and a meatsafe with lock and key, these you hire with your furniture.

In the tradition of the nineteenth century — which included teaching immigrant and poor women the newest scientific ways of cooking both in the U.S. and in Britain, the ensuing scores of household-advice books even aided women in the far-flung corners of an imperial empire, in the cantonments of the Raj.

And such is the power of the written word.

Many experts believe that cookbooks do not necessarily reflect what people actually eat and how they behave in the kitchen, but, let me assure you, in the case of these English women and others of us who’ve raised children and cooked in lands far from home, such advice books took the place of absent mothers who would have been just as clueless in the desert or the jungle.
