I’m listening to Empire State of Mind by Alicia Keys (awesome song). Miss Keys was playing in Rockefeller Plaza this weekend when I was in New York City. It is that kind of event that makes you realize that this is where everything is happening. In my entire life I have been to this city seven times, and every time I go there it is a completely different experience. Ironically, I am more free in New York than I am in Toronto, and I am a Canadian. Maybe I should move. Anyway, here is a list of some cool things I did this weekend.

The Apollo Theater

1. The Apollo Theater

My wife and I took the subway to Harlem, getting off at 125th and Malcolm X Blvd. For some reason I was surprised by how many Starbucks there were. I was also a little surprised by how small The Apollo Theater is on the outside. There is so much history here I just assumed there would be a big gift shop and a huge outer-facade (is that even a word?). There is a tour you can go on that we couldn’t do because there was a matinee performance of Dreamgirls (I saw the original on Broadway).

2. We walked the entire length of Central Park

IT'S A CONCRETE JUNGLE!!!!

For the first time I walked the entire length of Central Park from Harlem to the Upper West Side. Next to Stanley Park in Vancouver this is the nicest park in the world. It barely seemed like any time went by, but we walked miles. We watched people skating, saw a turtle, witnessed a wedding and watched two jazz trios. I kept remembering all of the movies I have seen that take place in this park (mostly Woody Allen movies).

3. Angelo’s Pizza (Next to the Letterman studios)

Angelo's Pizza

New York has six million people, but we actually bumped into my family at this restaurant. Maybe it was because I wouldn’t shut up about how great it is. We all sat at Madonna’s table right there in the front window. We also ate at a few Italian restaurants with more nouveau cuisine, but there is something about the basics that will work forever. Good tomato sauce, white bread, cheese, pepperoni and spaghetti done in an old fashioned New York Italian style. The last time we ate here my wife talked to David Letterman shortly afterwards.

4. The Empire State Building

The Empire Strikes Back

One night we went up to the top of the Empire State Building. It seemed to be going through a cloud and it was snowing even though on the ground there was no snow. It was still a great view and we were able to see people practicing for the Macy’s Parade. Interesting factoid: the observatory that is further up was supposed to be a waiting room for zeppelin balloons.

5. Macys Parade Practice

Macy's Parade

Well we didn’t get to watch the parade but we did see them practicing. There is always something happening in this town.

6. We stayed near Times Square

WHAT TIME IS IT?!!!

Um…if there is a recession someone forgot to tell Times Square. It was much more crowded then it was two years ago when I was last here. And yet I never felt like I wasn’t safe. And I was mugged here once in the 80s. It is now completely different from the Times Square I was mugged in. It’s all chocolate and toys now. I’ll save my Broadway experience for my next blog, but here is a teaser: GO SEE IN THE HEIGHTS!!!! Also Rihanna played here on Monday morning for Good Morning America. I missed it but my niece saw her.

We stayed at the Westin off of 43rd. Nice comfy beds.

7. The Brooklyn Diner

The Mixed Marriage of Irving and Gina

This is my favorite place to eat in New York. This is an interesting breakfast they have called The Mixed Marriage of Irving and Gina which has challa bread and Italian sausage. It was delicious. I love mixed marriages myself and this was as delicious as my own mixed marriage. I also had pancakes the next day that were also soft and yummy. They serve polenta instead of hash brown.

8. FAO Schwarz

The BIG Piano at FAO Schwarz

One thing I love about New York is that they are proud of their film history and they take every chance they can to exploit/celebrate that rich culture. Here two FAO Schwarz employees gleefully dance on the piano while dozens look on.

9. Gray Line Tours

Part of the Berlin Wall stands near the WTC ruins

We took the Gray Line Downtown tour. This was the only way we could see everything we wanted in the short time we were in the city. The only place we got off the bus was at the WTC site. My father told me that when I was a baby we stood there as they were building the World Trade Centre. In the 80s we both went to the top of the World Trade Center. And now we stand looking at the construction of the Freedom Tower.

10. We didn’t get in to see The View but we did stand in a cold line

Take some time to wait outside in the cold hoping to get in to see The View

Actually this wasn’t a cool thing to do. It was a freakin’ cold thing to do! And we didn’t get in to see The View. We stood in the stand-by line early in the morning. They do give you a complimentary breakfast which is nice. And I did get to see producer Bill Getty walk into work. And I learned that The View is actually filmed in a really ugly building. And they don’t have enough seats, because even people with tickets couldn’t get in. Get a bigger theater Barbara!

Of course the real reason it was so busy and crowded is because it is much cheaper to go to New York City now because of the recession. So there are a lot of deals and I encourage you to go down and experience the city Toronto can only pretend to be. Most of my immediate family went down to spend some time together and celebrate some birthdays, good health and my sixth wedding anniversary.

I caught two interesting musical performances on tv recently that brought a smile to my face.

The real treat (for me anyway) was Ray Davies on David Letterman Wednesday Nov. 18. Now I really liked the Kinks in what seems like ages ago, but the Davies brothers Ray and David seemed to have trouble relating to each other over the years and the band had it’s share of meltdowns between various members. Still when they worked well they were pretty darn good.

Ray’s voice isn’t anywhere near what it used to be BUT he sang the 1964 single, “You Really Got Me” with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.
Quite outstanding. A different and enjoyable CD too.

The Kinks Choral Collection

The other performance was the Barry and Robin Gibb duet on Dancing with the Stars.
They harmonized to “You Should Be Dancing.”
And yes, maybe we all should be dancing!
Made me remember going to see a very young and very skinny John Travolta in the movie Saturday Night Fever. Good times.
Now let’s see who in the world did I go with…
Oh my God… it was… it was… my husband. Ha.

Wow, kinda like having a 60’s/70’s flashback… not unpleasant, just kinda odd. Ha.

Well worth searching You Tube for the clips of both but especially the Davies/Letterman clip!

G’night,

Stivers and Cagle (center) with M.S. in Publishing students at Entertainment Weekly

“You’re never done,” said Cyndi Stivers, managing editor of EW.com about career trajectories and the importance of staying current. “Get comfortable with that idea and keep learning. The stuff that comes easily to you may actually be a rare and marketable skill.” Next to her, Jess Cagle, managing editor of Entertainment Weekly (all Time Inc. top editors have this title instead of Editor-in-Chief), nodded in agreement. Both editors had agreed to sit down with NYU’s Master of Science in Publishing students to talk about careers, publishing, and the challenges of entertainment journalism.

Stivers certainly knows what she’s talking about: she began her career during the “hot type” (also known as mechanical typesetting) printing era, taught her bosses to use computers, and stood at the forefront of the transition to desktop publishing. After launching Time Out New York, she moved to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and helped found Martha’s 24-hour Sirius satellite radio channel. Now, as top web editor of one of the most popular entertainment reporting brands in the business, Stivers is enmeshed in publishing’s current shift to digital media. In other words, she’s seen the industry in transition and had an active role in those changes. “That’s why I’m not freaked out,” she said. Indeed, the current moment is an exciting one for Stivers, Cagle, and the brand they manage.

For Cagle, who has been a writer, editor, and reporter both in print and on television, “There’s nothing more gratifying than working on a magazine—that tactile thing that you hold. It was always my first love,” he says. His writing start came during his college stint as an intern and fact checker for People. His secret to success? Barging endlessly into the managing editor’s office and asking to write—until he was finally assigned a music review of a group called Run DMC. Cagle’s take on the emerging rap scene impressed his editors, and he eventually landed key writing, reporting, and editing gigs at People, Entertainment Weekly, and Time.

These days, along with Stivers, Cagle presides over a brand that has kept the pulse of the entertainment industry since the magazine’s launch in 1990, when Time Inc. spun off the popular review section of People into a full-fledged magazine of its own. With just over 12 million readers per month (total paid and verified circulation stands at 1,796,560; the pass along rate is more than six readers per copy; and 60% of readers are female), the magazine today boasts unparalleled access to celebrities. The staff of 80 people includes bureaus in both New York and Los Angeles. Entertainment Weekly does not maintain separate editorial staffs for online and print editions, though the debate over which content shall appear online is an ongoing one. Until recently, the website contained everything the print edition did “day and date,” but now the brand caters to its different audiences more precisely. (Indeed, according to Stivers, there is only an 11% overlap between print readers and those who read the site religiously.)

As savvy editors, Stivers and Cagle maximize every opportunity: with a conference room full of opinionated, eager publishing students, naturally the editors decided to turn the tables and conduct an informal mini focus group. “Tell us what covers you like best and worst,” they said, gesturing at the wall of Entertainment Weekly covers. Perceptive publishing students quickly came to a pretty clear majority: strong single images (David Letterman with his pants dangling around his knees and Robert Downey, Jr. in costume as Sherlock Holmes or Ironman) won out over cluttered preview covers. Excessive digitization (such as the cover of a manipulated-looking Megan Fox) turned students off; iconic, natural closeups like the Patrick Swayze cover intrigued them.

After Cagle and Stivers headed off to their afternoon meetings, editorial assistant Archana Ram gave students a tour of the offices. Books, albums and CDs of films and TV shows were everywhere, waiting to be reviewed. Archana showed students one staple of a magazine office that never seems to disappear: the mock-up wall. Editors gather each day for “wall meetings,” a tradition of analyzing and perfecting the order and placement of stories and ads. The wall—a space that existed for editors long before Entertainment Weekly’s launch—was our reminder that tactile, print visuals are still a key element of the media world.

Students on tour at E.W. with editorial assistant Archana Ram (right)

Stivers and Cagle have clearly done a great job of refining entertainment journalism and creating a promising synergy between the magazine and website. For all those who disparage the current fate of the magazine world, Stivers has this strong and clear message: “It is still a very vibrant and exciting space to work in.”

Every time I turn on a news channel whether its FOX, CNN, CBS, or ABC all I see is sad stories of politicians using government funds for their personal use, or unremorseful talk show host David Letterman revealing to the world that he cheated on his wife with pretty much all of his assistants. Then you see a story about another terror threat on our country, which should be the lead story that falls behind stupid gossip.

Ever since 9-11 anytime something popped up about a terror alert, I have always wondered what city will be next and hoped no lives would once again be lost. I think the problem that most of us had, was that we always felt untouchable living in the U.S until the towers came down and many of innocent victims lost they’re lives. It’s a day that all of us will never forget, and children born after the tragedy will learn about but will never fully understand the impact it had on all of us at the time.

Like many I was not a fan of President Bush at the time, but was happy he did take quick initiative to try and find the terrorist responsible for the brutal deaths of many on U.S soil. While many of the terrorist leaders have been caught or killed in the process, the one that really matters Bin Laden still seems to be at large. Until he is caught or they officially find his corpse we are not as safe as we think. Terrorist plots on U.S will continue to grow along with the strong hatred they have for us, and unlike most reasonable people they are willing to sacrifice everything to be a martyr.

I know most of us are die hard Americans willing to put flags up outside of our houses, yell at every politician we see on TV that we do not agree with. But we have to realize that we are facing terrorists that are willing to sacrifice not only themselves but their families as well. While our kids grow up little league baseball, or Pop Warner football systems, children in other countries start learning how to kill enemies at the age of five. They are brought up to believe anyone who opposes them should be dealt with in a severe manner. Every time I hear that an American convoy was attacked by a suicide bomber that happens to be a child. I am thankful that my two sons only have to worry about whether or not they will be able to play the Wii after they finish their homework before dinner.

But as time goes by since the last attack on our soil, we have all started to get a little comfortable again. There have been a couple of high alerts but thank the one above that nothing has happened. Recently suspected terrorist with Al Qaeda ties Najibullah Zazi who lived in Denver was arrested after buying large amounts of cosmetic chemicals from a beauty supply store in order to build a bomb of mass destruction, which he planned to set off in the United States. Thankfully he was caught before he was able to follow through with his plans, or we could be looking at another major attack.

For one thing I am very grateful that we have dedicated men and women that risk their lives everyday overseas to fight for what’s right. I do not agree that it should have taken this long, but I am just a nine to five civilian working in the safety of an office. There are probably many things going on in Afghanistan that we truly don’t know about, and will never know about. One fact still remains the same the longer troops stay overseas, the more the 9-11 death toll grows, and the more we worry that at any moment an attack could once again happen.

You can stay up to date with all the latest news around the world on Fox News and CNN, both in crystal clear high-definition on Dish Network.

Apparently John Mayer played a full hour-long set at the Ed Sullivan Theater last Thursday, during the taping of the Letterman Show, but the performance was only broadcast in it’s entirety on the CBS website. So, check out CBS.com to watch it.

I have to say, Mayer himself doesn’t sound very good, but the band is killing it, and Steve Jordan especially (of course).

What does Oprah Winfrey know that Martha Stewart, Barry Diller and David Letterman don’t? David Carr has a great story in today’s New York Times about how Oprah’s longevity and success has more to do with what she didn’t do than what she did. The list is a long one.

She never took her company public. She never put her name on any merchandise. She never got involved in businesses she didn’t understand. And now that she is signalling the end of her 25-year run as a TV talk show host, we can add this one: She was smart enough to quit while she was ahead.

There must be something horribly wrong with me because Johnny Depp has always left me cold. Sure, if he snuck into my bedroom begging for some lovin’, I wouldn’t tell him to take a hike. But here he is, People’s Sexiest Man Alive again and I’m like, “whatev.”

I never agree with People’s choices around beauty and sexiness. Boring Pierce Brosnan? Frat Boy Affleck? Two-time Sexiest winner Brad Pitt’s another hunk about whom I’ve always been lukewarm. I was down with former Sexiest Men Denzel and Clooney, and still consider JFK, Jr. one of the sexiest men to have ever walked the planet. But the rest of People’s choices…yawn.

So what better thing to do on a cold Sunday afternoon than sit around deciding who the sexiest men in the world are. Here’s my list.

Edward Norton – He’s scrawny and has a receding chin, but Edward deserves the clichéd “best actor of his generation” title. Ol’ Ed must have something in the sexiness department considering he scored babes Rosario Dawson in 25th Hour and Salma Hayek in real life. Anyone who can make a neo-Nazi hot definitely deserves to be on some list.

Barack Obama – Nobel Prize winner. Devoted family man. Coolest American president who ever lived. Obama is the epitome of sexiness. Now, if he can just pass health care.

David Letterman – Yep. Dave. In high school, I had a major crush on him. He doesn’t offer much in the looks department but the dry, quirky, somewhat mean-spirited wit adds more to his appeal than a pretty face ever could. Plus, you can see in the way he flirts with female guests and fawns over Julia Roberts’ mouth that there’s a love monster within the geek’s body. This latest scandal only proves my point.

Javier Bardem – I saw him a couple times in Madrid and he came off as one of those “serious” actors who think smelling bad is a sign of artistic depth. Seems he doesn’t bathe. Still, Javier’s intensity is the stuff of dirty dreams. His fights with Penelope Cruz in Vicky Cristina Barcelona made you believe co-dependent, mind-fucking romances are the way to go. Even with that weird Coen brothers haircut in No Country for Old Men, Javier’s the bee’s knees.

This Guy Who Rides My Bus – I really need to get over my attraction to tattooed, messily gorgeous meatheads who chain smoke and work in sandwich shops. The one who rides my bus every morning was recently reading a Dummies guide on raising ferrets. Upgrade, Laura, upgrade.

Ewan McGregor – He wears makeup and skirts, sings in musicals and shows his butt all the time in films. Ewan is the cute, wacky class clown who just happens to be easy on the peepers. While his sexier peers have fallen off the cultural radar (Jude Law anyone?) Ewan keeps showing up and giving his all in decent flicks. He ought to instruct his friend Jude on the finer points of career longevity and how not to shag nannies.

Djimon Hounsou – Remember how great Janet Jackson looked in her black-and-white music video, “Love Will Never Do Without You?” I don’t because I was too busy staring at Djimon Hounsou. He’s one of those lucky bastards who gets to look incredible and have talent. Only a god like Djimon could distract anyone from the sexy powder keg also known as Leo DiCaprio, but he did it in Blood Diamond. Then he had to ruin it and marry that Kimora Simmons witch. What a loss…

Lenny Kravitz – When I lived in New York, a friend of a friend was subletting an apartment in Soho. Lenny Kravitz supposedly lived across the street. For a time, five of my girlfriends and I were seriously considering taking on several jobs and living in the cramped place together just to see Lenny walk by the window in his Calvins. Though he hasn’t made an interesting album in a decade and his lyrics are kinda dumb (“my mama said that your life is a gift/my mama said there’s much weight you will lift”), not much more comes to mind when looking at that face than sex.

Don Draper – A handsome as hell, emotionally remote, psychologically tortured cad who can’t keep it in his pants? What a dreamboat! I refuse to read articles about or watch interviews of Jon Hamm, the actor who plays him, because I have a feeling he’s actually a likeable and even shy person. I prefer scumbags like Draper.

Freddie Ljungberg – He’s a Swedish football player. He did ads for Calvin Klein underwear. If there’s any confusion as to why he’s the sexiest man alive, please refer to the southern portion of the aforementioned ad.

If Swine Flu wiped out the cast of The Hills.

Every week I write a list. Some people say I’m like David Letterman, only without that whole sexual scandal thing. Or gray hair. Or late night talk show. So, really, the only thing that D.L. and I have in common is our love of a Top 10 List. And what’s not to love? That’s why I bring ‘em to you every week. The real deal. The good stuff. The world’s most important issues.

You know, like stupid celebrities and things that piss me off on Facebook.

This week, in light of the upcoming treasured holiday, I started thinking about all the things in my life that I have to be thankful for: my family, the boy, YSL lipstick and, of course, the inevitable huge delicious meal my mama’s going to prepare this week. But that’s all kinda boring. I mean, who isn’t thankful for YSL lipstick family? So instead, I decided to count down the 10 things I’m un-thankful for this holiday season (or any season, for that matter).

10. The Swine
H1N1 or any other strain of the flu that everyone seems to have caught this year. Stay away.

9. Speidi
I don’t know how many times I can say it.

8. The Bump-it
I’m over this look, and what the hell? How is this a real thing?

7. Any douchey daddy drama in the celeb world.
I’m looking at you, Michael Lohan

6. Ugg boots
I don’t care that they’re comfy. They’re hideous and o-v-e-r.

5. Twilight
And New Moon. And the actors that I want to slap whenever I see their faces. And all that “I hate being famous” from Kristen Stewart. And the relationship rumors. And anything pertaining to this useless franchise.

R.Pat’s hair can stay.

4. Any and all Taylor Swift music
The girl is officially over-rated. Pretty sure I’ve got Kanye on my side on this one.

3. Ridiculous cleanses
Particularly the Blueprint cleanse. I don’t understand why anyone would starve themselves and suck down juice for three days to get cleansed… only to down an entire pizza the moment the whole cleansing process is over. Ughhh.

2. The amount of calories I’m going to consume on Thursday.
Which, by the way, is an average of 5,000 calories. Do you even know how many hours that is on the elliptical? Well don’t tell me. I don’t even want to think about it.

1. Levi Johnston

Among Late-Night Writers, Few Women in the Room

Based off this article, I’ve formulate my personal top 6 issues I have with Late-Night

Letterman’s audience is 55 percent women; Mr. Leno’s is more than 53 percent, and Mr. O’Brien’s just over one half. Yet barely any female writers

If a “dude” is the host, you have to write like a dude. Think about it, all late night hosts, minus the newly added Chelsea Handler, are guys. So where are the opportunities for women?

Letterman’s scandal pretty much cast a shadow on women working for late-night TV.

“Boy Humor” is keeping women away from late-night jobs, according to the article. Yet the audience, which over half are women, seem to be eating it up. So why not give them a chance?

Mr. Kimmel and Mr. Leno both have female executive producers. So big deal, there’s one female in charge. What about all the other positions.

And it’s now official: Women dominate men at every level of higher education, in terms of degrees conferred. Yet the entry level jobs for women writers on television is mostly held by men. Interesting.

This week, the stars of the vampire movie New Moon were taking over late night TV.

I personally don’t read the books, but I have enjoyed the vampire shows and movies Vampire Diaries, Tru Blood, and Twilight. Twilight was not expected to be as big as a craze as it has become, so the first movie did not have that much funding. Now, with more money backing the cult-like following series, New Moon is getting tons of press.

Adam was also the subject of MTV’s News quote of the Day. Here’s the quote (referring to his upcoming AMA performance), ”It’s gonna be sexy, I think. The wardrobe is amazing. I’m working with 10 dancers that I’m so impressed by. I was looking for a certain sensuality — five guys, five girls and they’re all incredible.”

Here’s a link to an interview with Adam from On the Red Carpet about his current media exposure, his upcoming performance on the AMA’s working with Lady Gaga, his new album, the diversity of his fan base and the prospect of his upcoming tour at http://ontheredcarpet.typepad.com/ontheredcarpet/2009/11/video-adam-lambert-discusses-upcoming-performance-at-the-american-music-awards.html.

And from Billboard magazine, a great Adam Lambert feature by Ann Donohue including a video of Adam talking about his new album. According to this article, Adam will be appearing on Dick Clark’s Rockin’ New Year’s Eve With Ryan Seacrest!!! That’s exciting! And the article also reveals that Adam’s will be the closing performance on the AMA’s. at http://www.billboard.com/features/kris-allen-the-billboard-cover-q-a-1004044831.story#/features/adam-lambert-the-billboard-cover-story-video-1004044836.story .

Joel Vogel over at the Huffington Post weighs in on Adam’s new album with this great review (he calls it an instant classic!!!): http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joe-vogel/review-lamberts-for-your_b_366296.html!!!

In the post, “Who’s The Pretty Blond,” H alluded to Kim Basinger’s somewhat distracting and erratic movements during interviews. He said that she “shakes.” In the comment section, Carol wrote that she was “compelled to find an interview with Kim on YouTube to see if she actually does shake…” Ha.

Fidget may have been a better word, but she can’t sit still and is known for her discomfort during interviews. I found the following video of her with David Letterman. The quality is poor, but it illustrates how nervous she is in interviews. I once heard her say that she had difficulty leaving her house. For you Carol. Why is it that men love beautiful and fragile women?
