Finally finished reading the continuation of David Mack’s Star Trek : Destiny. Back cover tell

Finally finished reading the continuation of David Mack’s Star Trek : Destiny. Back cover tells you:

On Earth, Federation President Nanietta Bacco gathers allies and adversaries to form a desperate last line of defense against an impending Borg invasion. In deep space, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain Ezri Dax join together to cut off the Collective’s route to the Alpha Quadrant.

Half a galaxy away, Captain William Riker and the crew of the Starship Titan have made contact with the reclusive Caeliar — survivors of a stellar cataclysm that, two hundred years ago, drove fissures through the structure of space and time, creating a loop of inevitability and consigning another captain and crew to a purgatory from which they could never escape.

Now the supremely advanced Caeliar will brook no further intrusion upon their isolation, or against the sanctity of their Great Work. For the small, finite lives of mere mortals carry little weight in the calculations of gods.

But even gods may come to understand that they underestimate humans at their peril.

What the book actually does is keep you guessing on how the Caeliar are tied to the current situation the Federation finds itself currently. You finally find out what happened to Erika Hernandez and the crew of the Columbia. You also find out how it is that Erika has managed to survive 200 years into the future and do get the feeling that she may well be the key to the Federation’s survival.

Needless to say I found it a wonderful read with lots of action but also an insight on how Erika and the crew felt about their “lifelong” guest status with the Caeliar. My only problem now is deciding what to read next – do I finish the last in the Star Trek: Destiny series or do I do a fantasy book and if fantasy, which one? For someone who prefers to procrastinate I need to make a decision.

Rummaging through an older folder filled with an assortment of artwork I’ve produced over the year

Rummaging through an older folder filled with an assortment of artwork I’ve produced over the years (by which I mean decades-I found crayon drawings dating back to around age 4), I discovered this drawing I did just under ten years ago. At the time, I was working on being the next David Mack, whose work I had fallen in love with.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. I didn’t let go of the dream, I just stopped pursuing it as soon as I started working. It was not until three years ago, when, after dropping two minors-political science and sociology-in quick succession, I decided to try my hand at something that genuinely interested me. It was frustrating at first, not being able to have the work look the way it did in my head. It eventually got easier with practice, and, one of the essentials of every artist’s tools, patience.

People call artistry a real gift, which while not an incorrect explanation, is probably not the most articulate. Because art is not so much technique or subject-matter; it’s about the ability to communicate an idea, or a feeling. And, as somebody who isn’t always sure what is on his mind, that ability is what I would call a real gift.

Just finished reading Star Trek: Destiny Book 1 Gods of Night by David Mack. Really enjoyed it. The book’s blurb tells you:

Half a decade after the Dominion War and more than a year after the rise and fall of Praetor Shinzon, the galaxy’s greatest scourge returns to wreak havoc upon the Federation — and this time its goal is nothing less than total annihilation.

Elsewhere, deep in the Gamma Quadrant, an ancient mystery is solved. One of Earth’s first generation of starships, lost for centuries, has been found dead and empty on a desolate planet. But its discovery so far from home has raised disturbing questions, and the answers harken back to a struggle for survival that once tested a captain and her crew to the limits of their humanity.

From that terrifying flashpoint begins an apocalyptic odyssey that will reach across time and space to reveal the past, define the future, and show three captains — Jean-Luc Picard of the U.S.S. Enterprise, TM William Riker of the U.S.S. Titan, and Ezri Dax of the U.S.S Aventine — that some destinies are inescapable.

Picard, Riker and Dax have to not only fight the Borg who have launched an all out assault on not only the Federation but on all known species in their path but also solve the mystery of how one of Earth’s first generation of starships, lost for centuries, has found its way on a planet way of course with no sign of crew or how it got to be there.

You are left with trying to figure out the mystery along with the crew. The story of the Columbia and her crew is interwoven with the Federations current struggle against the Borg Collective. You are left wondering how the two events are linked. I really enjoyed the story and can’t wait to get on to reading the next one in the trilogy.

November 1994 | Calibur Press

Writing: David Mack
Art: David Mack
Letters: Joe Martin

Set in Japan on a future Earth, the Kabuki are Japan’s secret service, and pop icons deeply integrated into their culture.

This first issue gives us the story of Kabuki’s origin as well as inform us about the organization of Noh and what they work for.

Crime is the main enemy of Japan, and we get see beautiful assassinations of Kabuki’s targets.

The writing is as eloquent as the art and presentation of the book. The storytelling is very provocative and the world is well thought-out. It’s just awe inspiring. I could never grow tired of the exposition that just rolls off the tongue and turns each panel into perfection. The dialogue is perfect, and nothing seems unnecessary, or forced. Other books that will just slam you with a junk of everything-you-need-to-know and you wonder what it was that was going on, or the entire thing just feels out of place despite how useful the information was. It’s just a well design work of art.

I love black-and-white, especially the ink. Like I mentioned earlier, this whole book is just beautiful. It’s been so long since I’ve read this series, and it’s still as good as I remember.

Autor e ilustrador: David Mack
Tradução de Fabiana Medina
Editora Caramelo
48 páginas

Good morning! There’s always something inherently delightful about long week-end Mondays, isn’t there? Maybe the fact that only a fraction of what you intend to do, will actually be done, mainly because of those mandatory naps . . . But I digress.

Drawing strength from Brian Clark’s wonderful post on writing ‘The Most Horrible Blog Post Ever’, I’m going to try and tack together the ever swirling thoughts I’ve enjoyed this last week about my current writing experience. Let’s start with:

* World-building! Zombie Romance takes place in our world, BUT with an astounding amount of mythos/secret history/technical do-dads to create, clarify, and put into neat little folders. Why? Well, if I can’t immediately pull out the reason as to why the undead are connected to the original spiritual history of humanity, and put it down in the story in a way that makes sense to you guys, I’m screwed. It’s an intense, wonderful process, that has lead to . . .

* World-building x2! A character who popped up in the ZR has an almost niftier heritage than the Zombie Hero, which naturally got me to thinking those incredibly fun ‘What Ifs?’. As in ‘what if this guy (we’ll call him Angel Know-It-All) is a cross over character from a different series?’ This appealed to my ‘Build A Long Term Brand’ sense, and along with some amazing pokes and prods from our good friend Gabriel, a whole new story line started to emerge. Sweet! Not only was the original Zombie-verse becoming populated with some deep, intense story possibilities, but I had two story lines that were suddenly running side by side, with a strong potential for a dramatic intersection at some point. Equally fun, Angel Know-It-All’s storyline isn’t a guaranteed romance – it’s leaning more towards straight urban fantasy. Very cool!

But just when things started to go too swimmingly, and I considered myself a genius . . .

* I discovered a book which I thought contained a good chunk of the plot points I had started hashing out for AKIA’s storyline. Not only that, but I found this book on a newsletter sent out by one of the agencies I would ideally like to be represented by. My reaction to this discovery was along the lines of a four year old having a meltdown, despite the very clear angelic guidance that I was sort of being a prat, and to stop making a fuss out of nothing. (Well, maybe I wasn’t told to stop being a ‘prat’ as such’, but looking back, the wording might have been pretty close.) I had that book in my hands with in four hours of discovering it, and began devouring it. Turns out . . .

* From the portion I’ve read up until now, the storylines diverge on the major plot points I’ve got so far. The theme of ‘good versus evil on a grand scale’ is too common to fret over, luckily. Mr Mack’s writing style is hugely different from my own, as well – very detailed on all the topics I usually don’t focus on (I call it ‘guy writing’ – focus on the guns, and not how the shooter is feeling. It makes for a very refreshing read in between heaps of romances). Whew!

So, what’s the next step? I’ve taken to pulling out the Post-Its, cork boards and yarn, and have started ‘Post-It Plotting’ for the first time in my life. From there, hopefully I can actually figure out how to transfer the bulk of the info to Supernotecards, and from there, well, we all know where I’m headed after that.

Have a great week folks, and thanks for stopping in for a sit. I really appreciate it.

PS: If you’re looking for some actual industry ’extra reading’, ‘When life sucks, humans turn to the undead’ is a pretty nifty post to pop in and read. And yes, it was one of today’s ‘zombie pokes’. Mwa ha ha ha ha!

Here are a couple things that caught my attention:

This excerpt from David Mack’s upcoming novel The Calling.

An introduction to an online comic saga, Hero, which drew me in with its art and the narration-as-rollover-text presentation, which strikes me as a good way to keep an online reader engaged and focused on every panel.

There was a ton o’stuff to look at - go explore when you have time.

Siamo a metà dell’anno, praticamente.
