Inbound marketing? What does that have to do with eLearning?

Almost anything you do can benefit from better recognition.

It could be the soccer team you coach – create a team blog, put photos on Flickr, tweet and soon sponsors will be coming to you!

For corporate eLearning departments, why not boost the reputation of your company with its customers by showing how you train your co-workers to serve those same customers better?

You have a lot to share and it is becoming a standard thing to have a decent social face. People want to be able to participate in a conversation with you. The days of having a website and calling it good are past.

Some work cultures are not there yet and I can empathize with you.

I get my social networking practice with our (iliveisl) virtual world business. Now that is expanding to include our affiliation with Reaction Grid as a reseller. Fortunately, it is easy to slightly redirect the online spokesperson’s “branding” to include this latest venture in OpenSim-based worlds.

When I started out making this online “brand”, I created accounts on everything I could think of – from CafePress to LinkedIn to Threadless Tees and even UrbanDictionary.com.

A year or so later, it has simplified to mainly blogging, Twitter, Facebook, and Flickr. Our spokesperson Ener hax, enjoys great SEO in both Google and Yahoo.

But these results are not from any secret.  Starting with DoshDosh.com and experimenting, I found a combination that allows me to fan these flames with only 10 minutes per day.  The biggest aspect of this is how Twitter can tie it all together.

And to measure what works, I use Google analytics plus the free tools from HubSpot. Keeping an eye on your ranking helps hone your efforts and reduces the amount of time you spend while getting better results.

It does take time but can also be rewarding and fun!

Hundreds of young volunteers in the United Youth Initiative were seeing red on Toronto streets Tuesday and encouraged other Torontonians to do the same.

The young people took a break from handing out red ribbons to attend a press conference at city hall later that day where Mayor David Miller declared Dec. 1, 2009 as World AIDS Day in Toronto.

Miller  praised  the efforts of the young people who have been working in conjunction with the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research towards finding a cure for HIV-AIDS.

“I would like to thank the young people that are with me today for their leadership,” Miller said. “It’s a privilege to see this kind of energy in our city.”

Miller also said that the young volunteers’ efforts to educate the public about the disease were crucial to the campaign.

“I think it matters that young people are engaged, speaking to Torontonians and handing out red ribbons,” Miller said.

Fred Jackson, 17,  was handing out ribbons to  fuel awareness on the corner of Bay and Queen streets.

“Youth under the age of 24 are among the most affected by HIV-AIDS, so it’s extremely important to me to show my concern with the youth that are suffering from HIV-AIDS around the world,” Jackson said.

Kerry Whiteside, executive director of the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research, said the main goal of Tuesday’s activities was to raise awareness about the role that research plays in finding a cure for the disease, as well as to gather donations.

“You can only tell people to abstain or wear a condom so much and they may not listen,” said Whiteside in an interview. “So the only way that we’re actually going to end this disease is through research.”

Jackson said that Torontonians have been very receptive and generous toward the Red Ribbon Campaign.

“I’d say about 50 per cent of the people that end up supporting us end up making donations,” he said.  “Many others have also just taken ribbons to show their support and awareness.”

Officials hope to bring the Red Ribbon Campaign to the national level by next year.

“The goal for 2010 is [to have] one million red ribbons given out across Canada,” Whiteside said in an interview after the conference.

Miller ended the news conference by urging the citizens of Toronto to take part in World AIDS Day by “giving a little bit and reaching into your pockets.”

The City of Toronto is sending out the bureaucratic troops to advise the unwashed populace on how they too can live green like David Miller, the city’s “green” mayor. Miller recently jetted across the Atlantic to tell the world about all the wonderful things Toronto is doing to help the environment. Every little bit helps, of course, but offsetting Miller’s globetrotting ways will demand additional sacrifice on the part of the citizenry.

I found the Live Green Toronto information table (pictured above) inside the entrance to Sears at the Toronto Eaton Centre. Handing out pamphlets and advising passersby of various government incentives available to save energy seemed innocent enough. But I was somewhat taken aback by the invitation from one of the employees to sign a petition “calling for action on climate change.” In my view, Sears is treading on dangerous ground by implicitly endorsing such political advocacy on its property.

If I was to sign any petition on the subject, it would be something along the lines of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation’s “No carbon taxes or cap and trade” petition, which you can check out here.

Governor Pat Quinn

(Chicago, IL) — December 15, 2009. From the Illinois 2010 candidate and cow-pie trail mix…

… After two-rounds of voting, the Democratic Party of Evanston on Sunday endorsed Governor Pat Quinn over Comptroller Dan Hynes with 70% of the vote.

Quinn, who appeared at the endorsement session, had 58% of the vote in the first round –60% is necessary for an endorsement–and Hynes had 37%.

… Though the Evanston Democrats mustered the votes to give their nod to both Quinn and U.S. Senate hopeful David Hoffman, they were unable to endorse one of their own for the state House seat being vacated by State Rep. Julie Hamos (D-Evanston). 

Here’s how the Evanston Dems votes on the Hamos successor stacked up: Patrick Keenan-Devlin took 119 votes or 46%; Jeff Smith had 57 votes or 22%; Eamon Kelly collected 47 votes or 18%; Robyn Gabel managed 33 votes or 13%, and Ed Moran, 1 vote or 0%.

… GOP U.S. House candidate David Ratowitz (IL-5)—who’s aiming to challenge U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley in November—today got the official endorsement of Republican Cook County Commissioner Tony Peraica.

Peraica said, “His grassroots campaign is firing on all cylinders, aiming well beyond the February Primary to retake Illinois’ 5th Congressional District for Republicans in November.”

Can Ratowitz do that on 2-cylinders?

… GOP governor hopeful State Senator Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdales) chatted about Illinois’ cratering budget with Ray Hanania on WJJG AM 1530 today. Dillard is trailing in 4th place at 9% out seven Republican candidates seeking the party nomination, according to a new poll by the Chicago Tribune.

… State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) today received the endorsement of the Illinois Federation of Teachers over opponent Jim Madigan, a civil rights attorney and gay rights activist.

… State Reps. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) and Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) snuggled with POTUS (aka Barack Obama) at a White Holiday holiday party on Monday.

… State Rep. David Miller (D-Chicago) met with Martin Luther King speech writer, Clarence Jones, in Skokie today.

… Illinois Federation for Right to Life endorsed two Republican candidates for governor State Senator Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) and former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan.

… Illinois Federation for Right to Life also endorsed a batch of Democratic legislators: State Reps. Joe Lyons, Careen Gordon, Lisa Dugan, Bob Flider, Daniel Beiser, Dan Reitz, John Bradley, Brandon Phelps, and Esther Golar was recommended. Deanna Demuzio was the only Democratic State Senator to get the pro-life group’s backing.

… Democratic Lt. Governor candidate Scott Cohen from Chicago plans to spend $3 million of his own dough in the seven-man race for the Lite Guv Democratic nomination. Cohen thinks, however, that his opponents should limit themselves to raising only $100,000 each. If they have $3 million in between their own sofa-cushions, well, that’s ok to spend. Uh, huh.

You can’t make up this stuff.

The case for deamalgamation of this conglomerated government grab bag called Toronto grows firmer every day. We are constantly faced with examples of how city hall doesn’t work for us. It’s a problem of governance; a city designed by bureaucrats with their own betterment, welfare and turf at the forefront.

For example, look at how the bureaucracy has structured city hall. It’s divided into what are commonly referred to as bureaucratic silos, meaning huge self-contained masses of civil servants clumped in impenetrable walls. They are supreme in their spheres, be it city property, parks, traffic, licensing, you name it.

They have their own “property,” even though it’s supposedly the property of Toronto citizens. They defend their turfs against intrusions by other silos, and of course by the common enemy, elected politicians.

This was clear in the issue of off-leash parks for dog walkers in Corktown. They’ve been plagued by bylaw officers handing out costly tickets while city hall has dragged its feet in providing a park where they can let their dogs run free. Off-leash parks are a normal part of big-city living, but this isn’t a normal big city. It’s a bundle of disparate and distinct urban and suburban municipalities slapped together against their wills by a city-hating bumpkin from North Bay who swallowed the big-business lie that forcing big government on such distinct municipalities is efficient.

For the dog walkers of Corktown what should have been a simple use by them of otherwise unusable vacant land has taken years. The silos had to agree among themselves. No big business or special interest wanted Orphan’s Park. Lucky for the Corktowners. It’s not a done deal yet. But Coun. Pam McConnell who has sought to get this land for their use says she’s reasonably certain things will go that way soon.

Not soon enough, of course. Wasn’t that what Mayor David Miller’s campaign broom was all about? It was supposedly sweeping away the obstacles to a government that works for Toronto residents after the Mel Lastman years of amalgamated buffoonery. But an amalgamated dirt pile is too much for any single broom.

Deamalgamation would be good for Downtown residents. You’ve lost much by being blended in with suburbia. Look at the atrocious blue and gray plastic crates on wheels blotting your sidewalks for garbage and recycling. No thought of you in that design. Look at the crappy “street furniture” you’re stuck with. Deamalgamation is a dream, for sure.  But with enough will, it can happen.

Adrian Heaps has no right to public money for his legal issue incurred as a private citizen.

(Chicago, IL) — December 9, 2009. Citing his many years of leadership on education funding reform, the Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT) today endorsed State Rep. David Miller (D-Dolton) for Illinois Comptroller.

IFT represents over 103,000 teachers and staff statewide, and its endorsement is a critical win in the state’s short primary season.

“David Miller has been a vocal champion for public education since his very first days as a State Representative,” said IFT President Ed Geppert, Jr.

Miller is the chief sponsor of legislation in the State House to address the structural funding inequities in Illinois’ education system.

The IFT endorsement is Miller’s second labor endorsement in as many weeks; last week the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 241, also announced its support.

The Illinois AFL-CIO, however, declined to endorse either Miller or his primary opponent Raja Krishnamoorthi.

The AFL-CIO, like the IFT, is among the crown jewel of endorsements. It propels candidates forward in primaries. Miller will have a longer, tougher slog against Krishnamoorthi.

Sadly, due to the out of control spending and waste by our socialist city council here in Toronto, taxes are at an all time high and local businesses simply can’t keep up. The message from our city council is loud and clear, we don’t want your business! In all my life living in Toronto, things have never been this bad, and the fault for the mess we currently find ourselves in can be laid at the feet of about 20 city councillors and our Mayor, King David Miller.

David Miller’s garage stinks. It should—it’s full of trash.

The Toronto city workers’ strike has already dragged on for a month. As a result, municipal services like pools, daycares, kids camps, and garbage collection have been shut down. (Grab a copy of this week’s Maclean’s for more on the strike.) If residents want to get rid of their refuse they have to take it to one of the city’s management-run temporary dump sites, 19 of which are still accepting garbage. But the Miller family has held on to their trash, and plan to continue adding to the garbage heap until the strike ends. Hauling it to a temporary dump site isn’t an option. “That’s sort of like giving in to the strikers,” says Miller.

He’s extremely frustrated by the strike and the problems it’s causing, but says living with trash can be made tolerable with a little work. He separates his refuse and recyclables, and tries to minimize the smell of organic waste by tossing it in a backyard composter. But composting only goes so far. City equipment can handle meat, for instance, but most household composters can’t. So Miller has to throw his leftover burgers and steaks into black bags and let them rot. “If you’re in the middle of the garage, getting a bike out or something, you can tell there’s a month’s worth of garbage there,” he says. His recyclables are piling up too, so his family is trying to buy products with less packaging to save space.

But no matter how big the pile gets or how often his kids—who would normally be at a city-run summer camp during the day—say they’re bored, the mayor refuses to cave. “Keeping the garbage in the garage is a small inconvenience,” he says. “And if I’m an example of what the average citizen can do, we can throw our garbage in the garage almost indefinitely.”

Guantanamo naval base, “Gitmo”, covers forty five square miles of Cuba inside an area under a controversial ‘permanent lease’ to the United States. Since 2002, the base has become synonymous with its detainment facilities for suspected terrorists. Although Barack Obama has given orders for the detention camp to be closed, the facilities remain open to this day. David Miller’s quiet, powerful film is the result of three days the filmmaker spent touring the camps in May 2008 as part of a small group of media representatives allowed there. Although the event was presented as a chance to ’see inside’ the working of Guantanamo, it was in fact a carefully staged PR exercise designed to yield predictable, stale, controlled media images.

Statistics were spewed ad nauseum in justifying the Bloor Viaduct suicide prevention fence, yet about $10 million was spent to install it.

That set the precedent for TTC subway suicide prevention mechanisms. And someone should sue to install them.

Dear Councillors:

We ask you to please put forward or support a motion to refer the ice allocation policy recommendations to the Community Development and Recreation Committee.

After reviewing Ms. Christie Blatchford’s insightful article on the issue in the Globe (link below) – the Mayor’s conflict glaringly obvious and his interest skewed relative to other more pertinent issues – it is only fair for this issue to go through sober second thought and full deliberation. Expending such political capital for this, especially when no effort has been made to go for “One Cent Now” from Premier McGuinty and his impending HST (instead of Prime Minister Harper alone), is disingenuous, even disturbing.

Notwithstanding the vendetta described in Ms. Blatchford’s article, many in our community believe this newly-publicized ice-time situation exists because a new arena was last built by the City almost two generations ago. If billions of public dollars can be lavished on the “Miss Congeniality Olympics” that are the Pan-Am Games, surely money can be immediately found for needed new skating infrastructure in our winter wonderland.

Covering some of the City’s outdoor skating pads would help immensely. Last summer North Toronto’s outdoor skating pad was in fact a garbage dump. Yes, I know that all Wards had similar makeshift dumps but erasing THAT memory would be best done by turning it and other skating pads into no-nonsense indoor arenas, alleviating the root problem. I am sure that parents and guardians in your respective wards would not begrudge a newly covered rink to fully erase that local stench.

Let us please debate all this before destabilizing a management system that works despite a lack of necessary funding. The results of ruining the system will be most evident less than 12 months from now, when we are registering our children for skating and you are all seeking campaign contributions.

Christie Blatchford has better knowledge on the subject than most.

But it is interesting that Mayor David Miller is alive again, because I didn’t see much of him when thousands of Torontonians were lining up for 7 hours for a flu shot. Oh, he was in Mexico when we “won” the Fauxlympics which are the Pan-Am Games.

 Depois de quase 12 meses viajando por todo o globo, esta noite será a última vez em que os garotos irão ao palco como parte da turnê Uma Noite com Il Divo. Tendo a última apresentação em San Juan, Urs teve isto a dizer antes do show.

Estou muito contente quanto a hoje à noite. Depois de quase um ano de uma turnê sólida, 114 shows em 32 países, chegamos ao desfecho, o show final. Estamos muito entusiasmados e vamos dar tudo o que temos, porque, depois desta noite, sabemos que poderemos relaxar e recarregar as forças. Será muito, muito especial. Já cantamos uma vez antes em San Juan, temos grandes lembranças. Muitas pessoas viajaram dos Estados Unidos, também. Vai ser uma noite única! – Urs Buhler.

Il Divo no Billboard Touring Award

O quarteto Il Divo é um dos indicados à categoria de Melhor Turnê de Artista Revelação, do Billboard Touring Award 2009, prêmio que elege os produtores e artistas que se destacaram com suas turnês no último ano. Com direção criativa de Willian Baker e figurino que conta com peças do estilista Giorgio Armani, o quarteto Il Divo sobe, nesta terça-feira, 27, ao palco do Credicard Hall, em São Paulo, para cantar o repertório de sua terceira turnê, que teve início em fevereiro deste ano.

IL DIVO VENCE PRINCIPAL INDICAÇÃO AO BILLBOARD TOURING AWARDS 
 
Na noite passada, Il Divo abocanhou um dos maiores prêmios nos Billboard Touring Awards (espécie de agremiação Billboard para turnês).
 
Os meninos concorriam com outros artistas de peso, como Taylor Swift, Kings of Leon e Lil’ Wayne, mas acabaram no topo.
 
Concedido a artistas de alto faturamento em sua primeira década como atração principal, os meninos ficaram realmente maravilhados em receber tal honra.

Governor Pat Quinn

(Chicago, IL) — November 16, 2009. Week-end’ish news and week-end travels on the Illinois 2010 elections candidate and cow-pie trail…

… He said. He said.

“He did nothing. He disappeared,” Quinn said of Hynes. “And you can’t have comptrollers disappearing when we have the worst financial crisis in Illinois history.”

“This comptroller hasn’t disappeared,” Hynes shot back. “I’ve been managing the crisis that you haven’t been able to solve.”

That–more or less–was the flavor of the Northern Illinois Coordinated Campaign Committee Democratic Candidates Forum between Governor Pat Quinn and Comptroller Dan Hynes in Rockford on Sunday afternoon, according to the Chicago Tribune’s Rick Pearson.

Hynes Communications Director Matt McGrath said in a statement following the debate: “… Governor Quinn appeared angry and defensive, content to lob misleading attacks rather than discuss the issues that matter. In style and substance, Dan Hynes was the clear winner.”

Quinn Communications Director Elizabeth Austin would–we are going out on a limb here–disagree.

In fact, the Quinn campaign dispensed with a press release, and sent its reply via video:

… The Democratic Party of Evanston hosted its annual award dinner on Sunday and Party President Daniel Biss and Committeeman Jeff Schoenberg welcomed both Quinn and Hynes who–after skewering each other in Rockford–came for dinner. The butter knives were discreetly removed from Quinn and Hynes’ tables.

At the Evanston Democrats’ fête, Senate President John Cullerton received the party Yellow Dog Award, Secretary of State Jesse White got the Abner J. Mikva Award, and former Evanston Mayor Lorraine Morton, the Evanston Community Service Award.

… The Indo-Democratic Organization of Illinois also held its annual dinner on Sunday which kept its Executive Director Pramod Shah busy.

… The Victor Fund’s President Chuck Wolfe headlined a fundraiser for Democratic Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) candidate Todd Connor at the bar/night club Sidetrack on Chicago’s North Side on Saturday.

The Victory Fund has endorsed three openly gay or lesbian candidates in the Illinois 2010 election cycle.

The event drew a slew of contributors and candidates. On hand included Alderman and Cook County Board President candidate Toni Preckwinkle, State State Heather Steans (D-Chicago), State Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago), MWRD Commissioner Debra Shore, IL 17th District State Rep. candidate Daniel Biss, IL 5th District State Rep. candidate David Shroeder, IL 11th District State Rep. candidate Ed Mullen, Democrat U.S. Senate candidate Jacob Meister, and Victory Fund-endorsed and judicial candidate Linda Pauel.

The Fund’s other endorsed candidate–IL 7th District State Senate hopeful Jim Madigan who is challenging Steans in the Democratic primary–was notable by his absence.

In his remarks to guests, Connor, a former Navy officer, lobbed the following cannon ball across the Water District’s bow: “You’ve got one mission–to clean water and you’re not doing it”.

Ouch. Direct hit below the water line.

… Political commentator Dan Proft won both New Trier and Niles Township’s GOP endorsement for governor over the weekend, Committeeman Joe Hedrick pushed Proft over the finish line in Niles.

… Evanston Township’s GOP gubernatorial endorsement was won by State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) with 60% of the vote with the help of Committeeman Linda LaFianza the the township committeeman

… This morning Quinn and Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL) are turning their attention to defending the potential sale of Illinois’ maximum security prison the Thomson Correctional Center in Western Illinois to the federal government to house terrorism suspects currently imprisoned at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo, Cuba, a sale that would likely generate 3,000 jobs in the economically-depressed region.

Quinn and Durbin will be holding a joint press conference at the State of Illinois building at 11:30 a.m.

U.S. Rep. Don Manzullo (R-IL)

… U.S. Rep. Donald Manzullo, an ultra-conservate Republican whose district includes the Thomson prison, was invited to Monday’s meeting with federal officials at the prison to learn about the government’s plan but he did not plan to attend, his spokesman Rich Carter said Sunday.

Manzullo was too busy shooting off his mouth on the radio against the plan to be bothered learn anything about the plan.

Manzaullo tweeted this morning: “Busy am on Thomson/Gitmo issue. Just did WGN AM. On WIND 560 at 8:15 , WROK 1330 at 8:35, Chicago news conf at 10:30″

… “I wholeheartedly oppose Governor Quinn and President [Barack] Obama’s efforts to move Gitmo detainees to our neighborhoods,” Illinois Republican Governor hopeful Andy McKenna said in a statement. Neighborhoods? Ignorant.

… Ditto Dan Proft. Proft, a long-very long-shot GOP wannabe tweeted: “On Don & Roma at 6;20 talking about Dems bad idea of turning Thomson prison into Gitmo”

… What do the locals think?

Craig Mathers, superintendent of the West Carroll School District, which includes Thomson, “I’m not too worried about safety and security because it was built as a maximum-security prison,” Mathers said. “I’m more concerned about whether to prepare for an additional 250 students showing up on my doorstep next August.”

… Progress Illinois‘ Adam Doster reported at the end of last week of an unintended potential casualty of the Illinois 2010 elections.

Last year, Illinois transit reformers pushed legislation (House Bill 2359) that would prioritize Illinois Department of Transportation spending decisions based on performance measures, including reducing oil use, curbing carbon emissions, easing congestion, and improving safety.

Revolutionary for idea-starved Illinois.

The problem?

Bill sponsor State Rep. Kathy Ryg (D-Vernon Hills) left the legislature early this year and co-sponsors State Rep. Julie Hamos (D-Winnetka), State Rep. John Fritchey (D-Chicago), State Rep. David Miller (D-Lynwood), and State Rep. Arthur Turner (D-Chicago) — are all giving up their seats in January 2010.

Cue start from scratch.
