Wystarczy, że przynajmniej raz ujrzy i zapamięta jakieś miejsce, a trafi tam ponownie w niewiarygodnie szybszy sposób niż najszybszy lot samolotem.

Every once in a while I encounter someone’s work whose sanity of argument, integrity of passion, and elegance of expression convinces me in an instant that I have found a comrade. Recently reading the new book “Geekonomics” by David Rice was such an encounter. Rice is a prophet, and like most true prophets, what he is saying is something you won’t like hearing. Geekonomics warns against the dangers of software. That’s right–software–which we rely upon every day to a rapidly increasing degree. Rice is no crackpot or self-proclaimed guru looking to make a quick buck with this book. His warnings are akin to those of Alan Cooper in “The Inmates are Running the Asylum” and my own as well. While Cooper and I rail against software’s inexcusable dysfunctionality, however, Rice points out very real dangers that threaten the world. Most software is bad, not just because it is much harder to use and far less effective than it ought to be; it is also insecure, which invites danger. The more we rely on software, the more vulnerable we are to the whims of those who would do harm.

Geekonomics explains the fundamental reasons why software of all types usually fails to deliver what we need, especially security, and the threat that this failure invites. The dangers that Rice describes are on the scale of global warming. Did this statement get your attention? Good, because it’s true, and the magnitude and imminence of this problem deserves your attention. Just like the threat of global warming, we dare not ignore the threat of insecure software, because software has become the infrastructure of the modern world.

Geekonomics is not only an important book, it is also a good book. Rice is smart and thoughtful, and he knows how to write. If you rely on software (and who doesn’t?), you should read this book. If you produce software, you should read this book. You might not like what you read, but you need to hear it, and we all need to do something about it.

Product Description

“The clarity of David’s argument and the strength of his conviction are truly inspiring. If you don’t believe the world of software affects the world in which you live, you owe it to yourself to read this book.”
–Lenny Zeltzer, SANS Institute faculty member and the New York Security Consulting Manager at Savvis, Inc.

“Geekonomics stays with you long after you finish reading the book. You will reconsider every assumption you have had about software costs and benefits.”
–Slava Frid, Gemini Systems, CTO, Resilience Technology Solutions

“Information Security is an issue that concerns governments, companies and, increasingly, citizens. Are the computer systems and software to which we entrust our sensitive and critical information, technologies that are out of control? David Rice has written an important and welcome book that goes to the heart of this issue, and points to solutions that society as a whole needs to debate and embrace.”
–Nick Bleech, IT Security Director, Rolls-Royce

“If you are dependent upon software (and of course, all of us in the modern world are) this book is a fabulous discussion of how and why we should worry.”
–Becky Bace

The Real Cost of Insecure Software

• In 1996, software defects in a Boeing 757 caused a crash that killed 70 people…

• In 2003, a software vulnerability helped cause the largest U.S. power outage in decades…

• In 2004, known software weaknesses let a hacker invade T-Mobile, capturing everything from passwords to Paris Hilton’s photos…

• In 2005, 23,900 Toyota Priuses were recalled for software errors that could cause the cars to shut down at highway speeds…

• In 2006 dubbed “The Year of Cybercrime,” 7,000 software vulnerabilities were discovered that hackers could use to access private information…

• In 2007, operatives in two nations brazenly exploited software vulnerabilities to cripple the infrastructure and steal trade secrets from other sovereign nations…

Software has become crucial to the very survival of civilization. But badly written, insecure software is hurting people–and costing businesses and individuals billions of dollars every year. This must change. In Geekonomics, David Rice shows how we can change it.

Rice reveals why the software industry is rewarded for carelessness, and how we can revamp the industry’s incentives to get the reliability and security we desperately need and deserve. You’ll discover why the software industry still has shockingly little accountability–and what we must do to fix that.

Brilliantly written, utterly compelling, and thoroughly realistic, Geekonomics is a long-overdue call to arms.

Sometimes it’s the small things that makes a conference more enjoyable:-

Full-time vendor sponsored barrister for good caffeine injections at anytime – nice

Full-time vendor sponsored drinks fridge for your cold drink alternative – nice

Full-time vendor sponsored ice creams – nice

Vendor sponsored Wireless LAN – would have been handy if I wanted to use it

Sometimes it’s the big things that makes a conference more memorable:-

Insane storm that hit on third day – impressive distraction

Decent lunch time food and seating – nice

Gala dinner, MC choice and entertainment (sans bonny and clive) – nice

Its always good to be amused:-

Hotel staff running through vendor stand at an IT conference asking for electrical equipment to be powered off because of power failure in storm

Watching a TV entertainer as MC trying to control 8 security experts having a debate – and he probably thought it would be a boring, dry gig.

Gala event – 100s of men + one toilet block with 3 urinals

The other stuff:-

Networking was excellent

As with any conference, you have your mix of good and bad talks

Use of wireless voting tech was quick and painless. After all, who really fills in the paper surveys at the end of talks.

David Rice – finally got to see him talk – impressive, entertaining and thought provoking

Patrick Gray – nice talk on the social media. And kudos for not bowing to pressure for the opinion you wouldn’t give on one of the panel debate questions. It says a lot for your character and journalistic integrity. If anyone disagrees, would you trust Pat with off the record comments, or on the records comments to be kept in context if he had given in to pressure so easy. It doesn’t really matter the reasons why he wouldn’t offer an opinion.

Peter Gutmann – to talk so fast, concisely and in-depth is impressive.

Will I be back in 2010. Hopefully.

It seems idiots come in all shapes and sizes and have blogs. Celebrities don’t care about you so you can drop names, they won’t give two shits if you bash them or praise them because at the end of the day, they’re famous and you’re not.

I don’t talk about celebrity a lot, however, that’s because I’m a sensible human being. I don’t care if someone from TV, radio, film and the works (whatever mediums there are) because they eat, breathe and shit just like me. Most celebrity I come across of are writers, not authors, but writers. Most of you can’t tell the difference. Here’s a dumbed down meaning: Authors are people like Stephen King, Anne Rice, Nicholas Sparks, Jodi Picoult and the like – they are known by everyone and they are praised by all because they write books and release them like diarrhea. Writers, on the other hand, are people like Sherman Alexie, (poet) Ted Kooser, Irvine Welsh, Dagoberto Gilb and the like. They aren’t well known by the mass media because they aren’t giving us the books that will be turned into movies in a six months.

However, the other day, my mother and I were at a Chinese restaurant where I saw someone who could have been Valente Rodriguez from that “Latino” show named after the “comedian” George Lopez. Now, El Senor has told me about Valente in the past and how he was when he was growing up. In a small town like Elsa, word gets out when someone gets famous. It took him a while because the dude came out in the movie Blood In Blood Out or Bound by Honor, but it wasn’t until he signed on to the George Lopez show that he got famous around here. Just like Gloria Anzaldua, but not really, because if you drop her name down here, no one knows who the fuck you’re talking about, as I’m sure a lot of you are scratching your heads. I will provide no link.

Now it was told to me by El that Valente was down in the Valley working with author David Rice (oh yeah, I went there). They’re working on a movie based in the Valley circling the lives of these boys. Now, I’m not down for the whole family film (which is how this sounds like), but whatever, tell the story. That’s what authors/writers do, right? Tell a story? What I don’t like is that I’m sure, like his stories, David Rice will try to sugarcoat it and create the perfect Mexican. There is no such thing, Rice. I’m not going to say I’m a self-hating “Mexican” because I’m not. I just don’t like it when someone who says we should divorce the drug dealing/violent/lazy and what not description of a Mexican contributes to a book that makes us look like superstitious morons who still believe in el Cu Cuy.

Okay, I got off topic, back to Valente. We were sitting there when I looked up to see this man at a table full of people talking. He was even greeted a few other people in the place. Now, I wasn’t going to get up and snoop around because I could care less, however, curiosity is a quirk of mine because as a writer, I need to know stuff. So do I snoop or do I stay? I opt for staying because it’s not that important to me. Again, because here is a man who “made it” and now he’s back in his home community, and not even being paid to be there, just because he wants to be home. This is his home. The valley is his home. He doesn’t have obligations to get up in the morning, nor do any other celebrity out there. They don’t us a goddamn thing whether or not you paid them to appear because when all the cards are down, if you didn’t get it in writing, they you dont’ have shit to discuss.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is who celebrities think they are. People without obligations to the rest of us.

Filmul JUMPER: ORIUNDE, ORICAND ii are in distributie pe Hayden Christensen (Star Wars Episodes II & III, Shattered Glass), Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, Flags of Our Fathers), Rachel Bilson (The Last Kiss, television’s “The OC”), Samuel L. Jackson (Coach Carter, Snakes on a Plane), Diane Lane (Unfaithful) care a fost nominalizata la Oscar, Michael Rooker (JFK), AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia) si Max Thieriot (The Pacifier).

Scenariul ii apartine lui David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Blade), Jim Uhls (Fight Club) si Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, X-Men: The Last Stand) si a fost realizat pe baza romanului lui Steven Gould. Producatori sunt Arnon Milchan, Lucas Foster, Jay Sanders si Simon Kinberg. Producatori executivi sunt Stacy Maes, Kim Winther, Vince Gerardis si Ralph M. Vicinanza.

Echipa de creatie, care a filmat in diverse parti ale lumii, cum ar fi locatii din Roma, printre care se numara si Colosseum, a fost condusa de directorul de imagine Barry Peterson (Dark Blue); designerul de productie Oliver Scholl (Independence Day, Artificial Intelligence: AI); editori Don Zimmerman A.C.E (Night at the Museum), Dean Zimmerman si Saar Klein (The Thin Red Line, The Bourne Identity), designer costume Magali Guidasci (The Professional) si superviserul pentru efecte vizuale, castigator al Premiului Academiei, Joel Hynek (What Dreams May Come, The Matrix).
