[Somehow this film, too, slipped through the cracks in my trying to get this blog up to speed. I saw it in July, I think.]

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the 6th movie in the Harry Potter series based on J.K. Rowling’s book of the same name. It was directed by David Yates and stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Michael Gambon, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, David Thewlis and Jim Broadbent.

[SPOILERS for the WHOLE SERIES after this point.]

Plot:
Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is in his sixth year at Hogwarts (school for wizadry). He finds a mysterious book that belonged to the half-blood prince and the notes in it help him star in Prof. Slughorn’s (Jim Broadbent) potion class. At the same time he works together with Prof. Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) to find out more about Lord Voldemort and his weaknesses.

The Half-Blood Prince is definitely the weakest of all the Potter movies so far. The plot’s all over the place, things happen you can only understand if you’ve read the books and HOLY SHIT! they spoil the seventh book/movie. What the hell?

I don’t think I’ve said it here, but if I did, I’ll gladly say it again: David Yates is the worst thing that could have happened to this series and that he gets to do the last four films is even more of a catastrophe. He can’t pace his stories, he can’t even manage to have one constant plot. Instead, his plot is all over the place. Watching the Half-Blood Prince is like watching an ADD bunny: “Oh, I gotta tell you about this it’s so interesting and then oh shit I need to tell you this first and have you seen this and what was I talking about? yeah right there’s this thing I gotta tell you but first have a piece of cake and by the way the whole point of the thing is and yeah so the story…”

It’s unbelievably annoying. And it leads to massive spoilers.

I can live with the fact that they completely butchered the whole Tonks-Lupine thing (no courtship, no nothing, just a “honey” all of a sudden?) because, okay, while I love their story, it’s not really a central one.

But why, why would you go ahead and completely spoil the seventh book/movie and the whole Snape thing? What purpose could that serve?

And all the relationship stuff was so badly done, I really wished Mike Newell would come back. Because he knows how to handle that.

Well. Apart from that, it was fine. The acting’s good, the supporting cast is great and the special effects were well done.

So, summarising: it definitely is the weakest movie so far and it makes me afraid of what the last two will be like but it didn’t put me off watching the rest (I don’t think that anything could).

Rah quel déchirement, quel tourment, quel torture !

Note globale: 20/25, soit 16/20.

This past summer I, like millions of people worldwide, sat down to enjoy the sixth Harry Potter fil

This past summer I, like millions of people worldwide, sat down to enjoy the sixth Harry Potter film. Upon leaving the theatre, I knew that I enjoyed it more than the fifth movie (which was basically David Yates’s “Harry Potter 5’s Greatest Hits”), but didn’t quite know exactly how much I liked it. I mulled it over for a few months, my unease about the movie growing, no longer sure I liked it as much as I thought I did. Now, I know, and knowing David Yates is going to direct the two-parter seventh movie as well, I am more than apprehensive – I’m downright pessimistic.

I’ve always said about book to movie translations: change plot, change characters, names, places, if you must. But keep the spirit of the original. Stay true to what the author was trying to say, because if you’re going to twist the author’s thoughts and ideals, make a different freakin’ movie, because that’s what you’re doing.

Essentially, this is the problem with the Harry Potter series (the last 3 especially). I’m able to shrug off plot points easily, even if they’re huge holes (Dumbledore disapparating in and out of Hogwarts??), because let’s face it, adapting these big fat books is a monumental task, and as long as you keep the theme, you can’t be expected to include every single detail of JK Rowling’s fully realized world. But as the HP series has gone along, more cuts have been made, reducing the length of the films (apparently the studio doesn’t trust fans that can plough through a 700+ page in a week to sit still for more than two and a half hours), until, I am so sad to say, the point of the series, with this most recent sixth movie, has been lost completely.

Spoilers Ahead

(And while I’m at it, why does the fifth movie seem like it’s all tainted in blue and the sixth movie tainted in green? What happened to bright colorful environment in the first four? Since when is dark synonymous with “ONE COLOR, ALL THE TIME EVERY TIME.”? I miss awhat used to go on in the background of the first four movies, all the details, the multiple whirling colors, the weird flashing lights. Everything was so colorful and magical and alive….now, we have yellow scenes. Blue scenes. Green scenes. Black scenes. Pale white scenes. WTF? Hogwarts used to look alive. Now it looks dead.)

Back to the issue: The major problem with the last three movies is Hollywood’s “hero syndrome.” These days, blockbuster films need to be simplistic, easy for the viewer to latch onto, with a hero who is fully good and fully awesome so that the audience doesn’t have to work too hard to root for him. Sure, he can be imperfect (juicy, right?) and conflicted (buzz word!), but heaven forbid that there’s any question that he’s the hero, because let’s face it, who would want to root for someone who is anything less than perfect?

If you ask JK Rowling, millions of readers of all ages worldwide. In the first few books (1-4, about) we see Harry coming to terms with the world around him and exploring all the fantastical magicality that can exist, but we also see themes woven in there, about oppression of others just because of the color of their skin or the quality of their blood (e.g. wizard’s mistreatment of house elves, etc.), and we even have a main character go on a crusade to stop mistreatment of house elves (Hermione) and an older, wiser counselor (Dumbledore) warning that some day the wizard’s mistreatment of house elves will come back to bite them in the ass.

In books 4-7, Harry learns of a world much larger world than he originally saw, secrets about his past, why he is the boy who lived, and many others. Most importantly, he learns that it’s not all about him, that, essentially, his being important is a big accident. Books six and seven show how even the beloved Sirius, simply because he mistreated a house elf, Kreacher, brought terrible calamity upon the wizarding world. We learn that Harry’s dad was essentially the school bully, pushing around Snape because he was just a mudblood, and just because he could. He wasn’t some saint like Harry had always seen him. A common theme throughout all of this is that IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT HARRY. Harry is flawed; he makes mistakes, big ones, he can be pretty selfish, he’s also a bit of a whiny brat. To come into his own destiny he must use his wits and his friend’s help, realize that he can’t be too cocky, he can’t save the world on his own. He also learns about Dumbledore’s dark, dark past, and how much disasters could have been averted if Dumbledore hadn’t gotten cocky.

Now, contrast this with the movies. Starting around the fourth movie (I actually thought the first three movies were pretty good at keeping the spirit of the book, especially the third one), Hollywood realized something. Wow, this story isn’t all about Harry, is it? Sure, he’s the main character, but damn the guy needs a LOT of help. How to rectify that? How about just glazing over the fact that he needs help with pretty much every task? How about skipping over all the boring agonizing Harry goes through as he tries to learn (with his brain, horrors!) how to defeat the champion tasks? How about spending a HUGE amount of time showing how HEROIC Harry is as he escapes that dragon, about a two or three page sequence, maybe five, in the book, but a good ten minute sequence of flying all around Hogwarts with the dragon? And never mind all the logic involved with how they captured such a deadly dangerous animal AFTER Harry snagged the prize? How about devoting about twenty minutes to awkward dancing so that we can show teenage angst, that’ll be good, oooh!

In the fifth movie, when David Yates took the helm, things started to go way, way, WAY downhill. The prophecy made before Harry was born that Harry and his pals (isn’t Harry awesome??? Look at the army he assembled, and look at how they kick Death Eater butt with childishly simple spells!) seek out at the end says something about how both Harry and Voldemort cannot be alive at the same time – essentially, one of them must kill the other. But in the book, this is only part of the whole picture. Voldemort had faulty information and only had part of the prophecy, which is why he believed that he needed to kill Harry. The part the movie gives audiences (and apparently the only part the script writers felt was important) is the part that Voldemort had. The full prophecy actually states that either Harry OR NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM (yes, that’s right, the school klutz) could potentially destroy Voldemort. So what happened was Voldemort created his own doom when he acted on bad intel and chose Harry to try and kill. But that’s too complex for movie audiences! I mean, isn’t it much cooler that one has to kill the other!? That’s like, epic! And the LAST thing we want is to put the school klutz on the level with our hero! Insinuating in any way shape or form, according to Hollywood, that your hero doesn’t have awesome talent all to himself, that he wasn’t destined to be the best from birth, is a huge no-no. JK Rowling’s point with this was to show how we create our own destinies through our choices, and that Harry really isn’t all that special in and of himself. But according to Hollywood, a hero who isn’t the most awesome guy around may as well not be a hero at all. I mean, really. Plus, the whole house elf thread in the books continues in this one, as we see how badly Kreacher, the house elf in the Black household is mistreated, but in the movie we have one scene of him looking creepy and weird, because he’s a bad guy, and that’s much simpler and tamer for the viewer. Yates & Co. even messed with Harrys’ love life – whereas in the books Cho eventually leaves Harry because he’s really not that good of a boyfriend, in the movie she betrays him outright, for no reason whatsoever. There, see? Don’t you just hate Cho now?? Because Harry can’t ever be at fault.

When you look at the sixth movie, the problem only gets worse. Everyone comes to Harry for advice, he’s always the cool one, I mean, even the all-powerful Dumbledore needs his help, several times even! Cute black waitresses think he’s the bee’s knees. Ginny Weasly starts hitting on him all of a sudden because he’s hot. (another Hollywood rule: you have to have a hot hero.)His life sucks cuz he’s the chosen one and he’s just trying to deal and be a hero. There’s the conflicted part of the picture with him finding a book and using it to be a better student (dark, right??? – oh wait that’s right, nothing ever comes of it, except Harry looking a little bit shocked when he almost kills Malfoy, but hey, murder ain’t that bad!), but evil forces are out to get him and isn’t life as the Chosen One just so hard? I mean, when your destiny is to kill Voldemort what else can you do? Never mind that in the book Dumbledore, before he died, did his best to impress upon Harry how important it was that Harry could walk away from the prophecy, that he was not bound to it, because VOLDEMORT created Harry, the boy who lived. In the end, he chooses to go after him, because he loves his friends and wants to save them. It is NOT about him needing to kill him, it is about CHOICE, and that is all the difference. The movie focuses on the obvious choice, and the ironic thing is, they make the very same mistake Voldemort did. Yes, I am comparing David Yates to Voldemort.

Most every single theme about the mistreatment of those different than you simply because they’re different has been removed, completely. Now, it’s ALL ABOUT KILLING and stopping people who are different from you. Kreacher is evil because he’s creepy and nasty and looks weird. Dumbledore is good because he has a long white beard and hoots like an owl when he speaks. (Okay maybe not the hooting part.) The liberation of house elves isn’t important at all because it’s pretty dang boring, you know. Any themes left over in the films are purely accidental because they had to keep some of the main characters the same. But unlike the books, it is ALL ABOUT HARRY.

Most of what we see Harry doing and experiencing is in the books, but it’s precisely what they’ve taken out that destroys the themes. They’ve neutered Harry, ripped out every shred of personality that he has and given it to Ron (whose job it now is in each movie to look super pissed off at least once) and Hermione (whose job it now is to quote facts and look cute). And except for these couple of things, Harry’s friends are basically useless.Sure, in the movies, Harry calls upon their help, but when push comes to shove, Harry is awesome because he’s gonna be the one to kill Voldemort, and he figures stuff out. I can’t enjoy a Harry Potter world that doesn’t have the themes that make Rowling’s work so unique, that takes away all the complexities and uniqueness of the world and turns it into a light and magic show swirling around and pointing with neon signs at Harry. I can’t believe in a Harry who isn’t flawed, a Harry who’s gonna defeat evil just because he has to, a Harry who is so amazing and talented and unique that everyone’s always turning to him for help. Because that’s not who Harry is, and that’s not what Harry Potter is about. It’s about how we’re all equals, and we make our own choices that lead us to disastrous or beneficial consequences, about mistakes of our past coming back to haunt us. Right now the HP movies are merely about a big bad dude killing a bunch of people because he can, and there’s only guy who can stop him, cuz it’s his destiny! That’s not Harry Potter. That’s Star Wars.

Radcliffe in Equus

You almost get the sense from reading various blogs that JK Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe are sick and tired of dealing with Harry Potter.

That’s sad, because it’s a wonderful, classic that will delight audiences for years to come.

It is Daniel Radcliffe’s dream to direct and produce something hard hitting and gritty according to tabloids.

*** THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS ***

After an eight month delay, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has made its way into theaters. But will it stand up to the hype? Will it satisfy those who have not read the novel and those who have?

The film’s premise is quite simple: Dumbledore and Harry delve into Voldemort’s past to find out more about him and his weaknesses through memories Dumbledore has collected. Romance plays large part in the film as some of the students of Hogwarts are now older and are starting to feel things that come with adolescence.

The film is quite balanced in the romance and darkness department. There are some instances where the romance is laid on really thick between Ron Weasley and Lavender Brown, and Harry and Ginny Weasley, but the redeeming factor is that those scenes are hilarious to watch not only because they are funny, but because they are quite cheesy. Of course there is an instance or two where the romance is not at all realistic but it is entertaining.

The dark aspects of the film are worth waiting for, especially when Draco Malfoy enters the picture. Tom Felton has convinced me that he is a far better actor than Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson, all of whom are not at their strongest in the film. Felton takes the character of Malfoy and finally morphs him into a character that is not as bland as he was in the previous films. Felton makes him menacing as well as fearful about what task he has to perform for He Who Must Not Be Named. His scenes are well written and directed.

The things to pay attention to most in the film are the memories Dumbledore and Harry examine. Though the memories are brief, they do contain important information on how to defeat the Dark Lord. We find out through the memories that Voldemort dabbled in very dark magic while attending Hogwarts.

Jim Broadbent was cast for the role of Horace Slughorn and his performance is marvelous. Slughorn’s role in the film is to give Harry the full memory he altered and gave to Dumbledore, a memory he modified to hide his shame, as one can deduce. Slughorn loves popular wizards and loves to “collect” them, meaning he likes to have them in his company, along with their pictures on a shelf. Slughorn provides a lot of comedy in the film and Broadbent’s delivery is excellent.

Michael Gambon really shines in his role as the headmaster Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. From the beginning of the film, we learn that Dumbledore really cares for Harry and Gambon makes that apparent in his scenes with Radcliffe. Gambon finally brings the character of Dumbledore to life, more so than the late Richard Harris I would say. The Dumbledore in this film is more cheerful than in previous installments and more frightful as well. There is one scene in particular where I think Gambon shows us that he is Oscar-worthy. Will the Academy honor his performance? I doubt it.

Alan Rickman’s portrayal of Severus Snape has never been better. In the film, Snape’s loyalties are in question. Whose side is he on? Is he on Dumbledore’s side or Lord Voldemort’s? Rickman is able to show us that he is capable of being on either side. For instance, there’s a scene where an Unbreakable Vow is being administered on him and Draco Malfoy’s mother, Narcissa. Rickman’s facial expressions in that scene convey that Snape is scared and worried that he may fail. In another scene we see Snape informing Dumbledore that he is growing tired of doing what he has been asked to do and Rickman delivers those lines with such conviction that you believe he is sick of doing Dumbledore’s bidding, if we go by the events that took place in Order of the Phoenix.

The Half-Blood Prince is extremely well-made. The cinematography is excellent; the colors used give the film as sense of gloomy darkness, something we have not seen since Prisoner of Azkaban. It reminds me of Zodiac and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Nicolas Hooper’s score is outstanding. He is perhaps the best composer so far in the series that is able to create dark ambient and frightening music. Hooper also utilized two themes created by John Williams: the theme from the Quidditch match in Prisoner of Azkaban and Hedwig’s Theme, both of which are altered slightly and expanded on. The inclusion of those tracks has angered some people, but I think it is quite delightful. The music played during the scenes featuring Malfoy and Dumbledore stand out the most. They are beautiful pieces. Rumors are floating about that Hooper will not return for the last two films which I think is a grave mistake.

UPDATE: Hooper will not return for the final two installments in the series.

Yates’s direction in the film is superior to what he did in Order of the Phoenix. It seems that he is growing and improving his style. Not only is he able to extract and direct great performances from many cast members, he is showing us that he has an artistic side as well. There are many instances of great camerawork, most notably during a speed-induced fly-in through the streets of London and Diagon Alley.

Overall, I feel that this is the best Harry Potter film to date and fans of the book series and the film series should be satisfied. I can only imagine what the next two installments will be like.

We were a month and a bit late, but finally our chance came to watch the sixth installment of this huge money making franchise. “How huge?” I hear you ask. Well…

The film opened to critical acclaim and instant commercial success, breaking the records for biggest midnight opening gross of all time as well as biggest single-day worldwide gross of all time. In five days the film made $394 million, breaking the record for biggest five-day worldwide gross in history. It is also the highest-grossing film of 2009, grossing more than $930 million, which puts the film on the all-time list of 10 highest-grossing films worldwide.

It was directed by David Yates off of… well nothing I’ve seen.

Lead roles come from Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint & Emma Watson off of these indie films:

and… Tim Burton’s wife who just happens to be right and is cast for every role in his films:

What a weirdo.

So a well respected British cast. But what to make of the film?

It was definitely better than I expected. One never really predicts that a film which is this guaranteed to make millions would need to be any good however, expectations were exceeded and the thing that primarily excited me was the visual aspect of the film.

Rolling hills in what looked like Scottish countryside, super imposed into the magic school of Hogwarts.

Fabulous white snowy scenes followed by enthralling games of Quidditch where you felt like a ball might hit you in the face.

The very first scene looked the best; as a sweeping camera quickly sped us through the streets of london, it really is stunning.

As for the script, it was nothing special. For example, the descision to give away a very necessary plot device in having a teacher ask Ron, Harry and Hermione, why it is, that “whenever anything happens, it’s always you three?” to which Ron replies; “Believe me, Professor. I’ve been asking myself that same question for the past six years.” Yes, we would be asking the same thing if we didn’t all realise, it’s a film . That annoyed me.

There was much comedy, including a very humorous bit where Ron is intoxicated by a love potion and he comments on how he thinks the moon is beautiful. Funny guy.

The acting was pretty top notch for the most part. My favourite being Sir Michael Gambon, who as usual delivered in the part of Albus Dumbledore. He’s likeable and just generally very good!

Not all of the acting was good. I was particuarly distressed by Bonnie Wright who played Ginny Weasley. I can see how they were stuck with her, having cast her for a minor role in the earlier films, not knowing she’dbe required for lead roles later on. To be quite honest she hasn’t got the right look for us to believe our protagonist would even think about wanting to be with her and quite frankly she can’t act. For what could potentially be the biggest film of the decade, the production company should have made wiser choices in ensuring their cast was perfect.

Overall this film most definitely held my interest and it looked brilliant. It made me want to watch the next one and ensured that I did not regret spending my time and money on it.

With Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, David Yates has delivered the most uneven – and weakest – film of the series so far. Not only that, he’s done it after producing one the best …The Order of the Phoenix. For me, Yates’ decision not to follow the books to the letter seems to have been a grave error indeed.

Apparently its not as bad if you’ve read the book – I guess because, with all the background knowledge, you actually know what’s going on – and having only made it to Prisoner of Azkaban, I wouldn’t know. What I do know is that there is something deeply unsatisfactory about this film. Instead of providing the usual seamless transition from drama to action, something we’ve come to expect from the HP films, Half-Blood Prince suffers from the kind of chronic unevenness that even Hollywood rarely deliver into cinemas these days.

On balance, the film is at its best during the lighter phases. Its fairly innocuous, gentle comedy, sure, but after following these characters over the course of six films, its hard not to laugh at a love-potion-struck Ron and a drunk Hermoine. Unfortunately for Yates, whilst watching the later, fairly laboured action sequences, all I wanted him to do was go back to the funnies.

With Yates in charge of adapting The Deathly Hallows (the final Potter book), the fact that it will hit cinemas in two parts could really go either way. We’ll have to wait until July 2011 to find out wether Harry Potter leaves the cinematic realm with a bang or a whimper.

When adapting an books to a movie, especially one as immensely popular as Harry Potter, there will always be things lost due to time constraints. It is unavoidable. So any complaints about what was left out and why really need to be avoided at all costs. With that said, I think they have done an excellent job with these movies. Sure, they leave a lot out but what they do keep is the spirit and atmosphere of the books which is very important. For this movie in particular I have to say that it is probably on of the weakest of the series. I did not even like the book very much. There had to be a lot of build up for the last chapter of the series so it just fell kind of flat. So when adapting a book that leaves a good amount to be desired, you’ll be left with a movie that isn’t too fantastic. The series as a whole is still tremendous but like I said, this is definitely one of the weaker chapters.

Voto: 5
