The World Economic Forum, famous for bringing together the great and the good in Davos, Switzerland,

The World Economic Forum, famous for bringing together the great and the good in Davos, Switzerland, has for some time run a programme for people it modestly anoints as Young Global Leaders. But in 2010 the Davos lot (maximum age: 40) will be old hat. Truly young would-be leaders, no older than 25, will gather on February 8th-10th in London for a “summit” called One Young World. Their purpose? Solve the world’s problems. Why? Their elders seem unable to.

The marketing industry has taken a particularly keen interest in the trendsetting habits of the Facebook generation. So it is perhaps no surprise that the event’s co-founders are advertising executives. And no surprise that one of them, David Jones, boss of Euro RSCG, a unit of Havas, is himself one of Davos’s Young Global Leaders (class of 2008)—though he is now in his 40s. But the aims of the conference, which is not-for-profit and aspires to become an annual event, are lofty.

Sessions will be streamed online and resolutions drafted in workshops. The 1,500 young people selected to attend the event (whose tag line is “25 today, leading the world tomorrow”) will find that they have influential ears listening to their ideas on climate change, human rights and the like. Kofi Annan, a former UN secretary-general, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu from South Africa (neither of them spring chickens) are due to chair sessions.

Proportional representation is meant to ensure that people from the most populous countries, not the richest ones, will make up the bulk of the delegates (China and India will have the most). Those interested in attending are encouraged to download an application on Facebook so their friends can vote for them, and to submit a video on a YouTube channel about why they want to take part.

Despite such techniques, the event will depend on old-fashioned corporate sponsorship for its financing. The founders are looking to business to cover the cost of individuals who come (€3,000, or $4,500, a person) and entire country delegations. They are urging firms to take an interest in building a community of young leaders; sponsors are more likely to want a community of young customers.

Mr Jones insists that the event is about innovation. Marketers use social media and new technology to reach young people and sell products. The founders of One Young World want to use that expertise, he says, and channel it for the good.

November 17, 2009 In May 2008, I met a Europe correspondent of the Wall Street Journal on an interna

November 17, 2009

In May 2008, I met a Europe correspondent of the Wall Street Journal on an international conference in Brussels. As we talked about the Turkish politics, he expressed his bafflement at how “biased the intellectuals and secular sections of the Turkish society were” against AKP, the Islamic ruling party which had taken over the government in a landslide victory in 2002. He thought that seculars were a bunch of corrupt elitists, contemptuous of the people and its democratically elected representatives. They were some mean fascist, anti-western bastards who for years prevented democratization of the Turkish politics and deprived the people of their freedoms. AKP, on the other hand, coming from the midst of the people and deeply-routed in Islam, promised to be the Muslim democrat alternative which would salvage this democracy-handicapped country and liberate its people from the autocratic secular yoke. Or so it seemed.

In the wake of the recent developments in Turkish foreign and domestic politics, I am not sure if that journalist who worshiped AKP as a democratic savior is biting his fingernails, but many others undoubtedly are: under AKP leadership, Turkey has just jumped out of the Western trenches and joined the ranks of anti-western, fundamentalist Islamic regimes.

The first indication of Turkey’s strategic realignment was the shameless bashing of the Israeli president, Shimon Peres, by the prime minister and AKP chairman, Tayyip Erdoğan at Davos. Yelling at President Peres, Erdoğan said “When it comes to killing, you know well how to kill,” trampling upon all decorums, let alone diplomatic norms. Next came the expulsion of Israel by Turkey from a multinational air exercise which was scheduled to be held in Central Turkey. To add insult to the injury, the fundamentalist AKP government lifted visa requirement for Syria, arch enemy of Israel and a known supporter of state-sponsored terrorism, shortly after the joint exercise incident. Turkish and Syrian ministers held a joint cabinet meeting and then symbolically removed the barrier at the border crossing. Turkish foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu, the mastermind of the Islamic realignment, talked about an integration of the two countries, with a prospect of inclusion of Iraq in this alliance in the near future. Shortly thereafter, plans for military cooperation and joint exercises between Syria and Turkey were announced.

If this is not enough to prove a strategic shift in Turkey’s orientation, wait to hear more: Erdoğan expressed staunch support to Iran’s nuclear ambitions on several occasions and accused the West of making Iran a scapegoat. He called the dictator Ahmedinajad a “dear friend,” whom he, along with the Turkish President Gül, also a fellow jihadist, had rushed to congratulate upon his success in rigged June 2009 elections. He said that Iran’s nuclear activities were “totally peaceful,” Iran was “being treated unfairly,” and allegations about a nuclear weapons program were “merely a gossip.” Criticizing the US invasion in Iraq, he added that “a civilization was destroyed there.” Not quite the kind of words you would expect to hear from a key NATO ally. In October of this year, Erdoğan flew to Teheran with a massive diplomatic and trade delegation to strengthen economic and strategic ties with the terrorist regime. In November, Ahmedinajad kindly reciprocated to Erdogan’s visit by attending an Islamic summit in Istanbul.

Pictures above: Brothers in jihad, AKP leaders Erdogan and Gul shaking hands with a mass murderer and a dictator.

AKP’s courtship with terrorist countries has not been confined to Iran and Syria: Erdoğan government speedily invited the leaders of Hamas to Turkey after the 2006 election victory of the radical terror organization in Gaza. Furthermore, Sudanese mass murderer Omar Al-Bashir visited Turkey twice in recent past and was welcomed by Gül at the presidential residence in Ankara. Ridiculing the international community, Erdoğan recently denied the genocide which took place in Sudan, asserting “I did not observe any genocide during my visit in Darfur.” He went on to shamelessly defend Al-Bashir: “A Muslim cannot be a mass murderer,” as in his opinion, murderers can only be Jews and Christians. AKP’s rapprochement to Sudan’s murderous regime has an economic component in addition to the common jihadist ideology: Newspapers report increasing investments in Sudan of Turkish Islamic businessmen with close ties to AKP. Nevertheless, nobody has bothered asking Erdoğan what he thinks about the Holocaust. The answer is obvious: He will most likely deny it. As a radical Islamist, he is anti-Semitic by nature and made public his sentiments about Jews in a speech to college students: “Jews have made significant inventions in history and now they simply sit back and watch their monetary returns from these inventions grow,” which can be translated to plain English as: “Jews are a bunch of blood-sucking leaches.”

Those who are still debating whether Turkey is really changing sides or not are either blind or ignorant: Turkey, under a jihadist rule, has already joined the global Islamic revolutionary front, while U.S. and EU kept looking on as apathetic bystanders. One of the main external drivers of this realignment has been the continuous rebuttal of Turkey by the European countries in its bid to join the EU, a prospect which had served as a key factor modernizing the Turkish society. I will handle this topic separately in another article. However, no matter what the causes, the West has an enormous problem at hand now. AKP’s policies will have far-reaching and serious implications for the US and the EU on several fronts, including but not limited to national security, war against terrorism, immigration, narcotics trafficking, nuclear proliferation and energy security. Thus, while preparing to face the adverse strategic impact of Turkey’s shift in the long term, Washington and Brussels must also brace themselves for more unpleasant surprises by the radical Islamic AKP regime in the short term.

Here is an excerpt about the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society from the NY Times.

“It is no coincidence that the Women’s Forum for the Economy and Society in many ways echoes the World Economic Forum in Davos, the famous and still male-dominated gathering in the Swiss Alps.

When the women’s forum founder, the French businesswoman Aude Zieseniss de Thuin, 59, sought to go to Davos a few years ago but failed to get an invitation (or a response to her request), she decided to set up a separate networking hub for women. This year, leaders including Melanne Verveer, the U.S. ambassador-at-large for global women issues, and Anne Lauvergeon, chief executive officer of the nuclear company Areva, rubbed shoulders with women activists from Afghanistan, Burma and Iraq.”

Layihənin baş memarı Ahmet Davudoğlu xarici işlər nazirliyinə təyin olunması isə Türkiyənin bu proyektdə necə qətiyyətli olduğunu bir daha göstərdi. Yaxşı, sual oluna bilər bəs A.Davudoğlu nəyə arxayın idi ki belə bir məqamda Türkiyə üçün iqsadi və siyasi əhəmiyyəti sözlə izah edilə bilməyən bir dövlətin qardaşlığından imtina etməyə cəsarət etdi?

Mən belə düşünürəm ki, ABŞ-ın Böyük Orta Şərq layihəsində 4 əsas dövlət var idi bu dövlətlər Səudiyyə Ərəbistanı, İran, İraq və Türkiyə idi. Regiona nəzər saldıqda isə Səudiyyənin orta şərqə təhsir gücünün zəifliyini, İranın mümkünsüzlüyü və nəhayət İraqın neytrallaşdırılması yekunda sadəcə Türkiyə üzərindən bu proyektin həyata kecirlməsinin reallığını yaratdı. Və bu mövzuda dəstək alan Türkiyənin 1923-cü ildən bəri oynadığı yatmış “Div” rolunu dəyişməyə gətirib cıxartdı. Düzdü Türkiyənin oyadılması siyasətinin əsl memarı Turqut Özal idi lakin ona bu imkanı vermədilər Turqut Özal Türkiyənin “oyadılması”nı daha cox Türk dövlətləri ilə bağlayırdı və son nəticədə onun bu ideyaları ölümünə səbəb oldu. Və nəhayət son dövrdəki hadisələri diqqətlə analiz etdikdə isə Ermənistanla imzalanan protokolların heç də gözlənilməz olmadığını anlamaq olar. Daha 2008-cı ilə qədər Türkiyənin Suriya ilə münasibətlərinin kəskin olmasına baxmayaraq son illər Suriya-İsrail arasındakı Çolan təpələrinin qaytarılması üçün vasitəçilik rolunu öz üzərinə götürməsi və daha sonra son günlərdə Suriya ilə visa rejiminin ləğv edilməsi Suriyanın Türkiyənin regiondakı olan ağalığına etiraz etməyəcəyinin əyani sübutu idi bununla yanaşı Yunanıstanda keçirilən Prezident seçkilərindən sonra Yunan prezidentin birinci səfərinin məhz Türkiyəyə edilməsi Yunanıstanın yeni dövrdə Türkiyəyə nə qədər əhəmiyyət verəcəyinin xəbərcisi idi. İraqla münasibətlərə gəldikdə isə Kərkük məsələsində Türkiyənin geri cəkilməsi və Kürd məsləsinin həllinə dair verilən vəd onsuzda gücsüz olan İraqın son nəticədə Türkiyəyə qarşı “dünəndən razı” olmasına gətirib çıxartmışdı. Bölgənin ən problemli dövləti olan İranı yalnız Türkiyə vasitəsi ilə qarşısın almaq mümkündür çünki regionda buna qadir ikinci bir dövlət axtarmaq sadəcə sadəlövhlük olardı. Türkiyənin İran münasibətlərində isə son dövrlər gedən inkişaf göz qabağındadır. Bölgənin digər ağası olan İsrail Türkiyənin bu addımınlarından narazı olduğunu hər addımda göstərirdi. R.T.Ərdoğan Ərəb dövlətlərinin simpatiyasını qazanmaq üçün Davosta “One Minute” deməsi eslində İsraili qarşıya almaq demək idi. Azərbaycana isə Türkiyənin istər diplomatik istərsə də siyasi təsir etmə qabiliyyəti son nəticədə xoşluqla olmasa da zorla müəyyən məsələdə “məcbur” etmək olardı. Ermənistanla isə münasibətləri yoluna qoymaq lazım idi və bu sahədə addımlar atıldı. Yəni regionda tək güc olmaq üçün Türkiyə əlverişli imkan tapmışdı və sonuna qədər də bu siyasətdən istifadə etdi.

Bəzi politoloqlar Türkiyənin bu addımı Avropa Birliyinə girmək üçün atdığı addım hesab edirlər. Mən bir məsələyə diqqət cəkmək istərdim, Türkiyə neçə illərdir Amerikanın “maşa”sı rolunu oynayır nəticə etibarı ilə Türkiyənin Avropa Birliyinə girməsi mənfi mənada Avropaya təsir edəcək. Birinci növbədə Avropa Birliyinə Amerikan əli ilə müdaxilə başlayacaq və Avropada yaranmış ümummilli maliyə bazarına dünya qlobal maliyyənin əlinə keçməsi ehtimalı doğacaq. Bununla yanaşı Avropada həlledici səs çoxluğu əldə edə bilər. Bütün bu faktorları nəzərə alanda Türkiyənin Avropa Birliyinə girmə ehtimalının sıfıra bərabər olduğunu deyə bilərik ən azı Fransa və Almaniyanın nə vaxtsa buna razı olacağına mən inanmıram.

Guilt! Guilt, I say!

Since moving to this godforsaken place, I have developed a habit that has come back to dog ear me in the ass on the way out. I suppose it was only natural that having lived for so long in semi-claustrophobic Japan, I would find ways to welcome the spatial glut of North America.

I could use the term bibliophile, but for its recent twee and self-congratulatory associations. It’s more that I have a ridiculously inflated idea of how much I can read given a limited amount of time. With books you can always fool yourself, like those poor addled multi-taskers, that there’s no need to filter. It’s all relevant.

Well, I can still fool myself a little while longer. In California, there is little employment. Let’s rejoice about this for once and take advantage of the time. I’m going to make up a list of books I hope to take a chunk ou t of before leaving. I’ll update it each time I finish one on the list. Let’s see how far I can get.

First off, The Magic Mountain. I’m getting close to the end of this one. Why did I buy this? Well, as doomed climbers say about real mountains, it was there — and only a dollar.

But there’s another story. A few, quite a few years back, I worked with an elderly Swiss gentleman, very dour and ascetic, whom I always overheard praising the strength of the mighty cockroach in the next cubicle. Usually he did this to elderly Japanese salarymen, who in beginner’s English, would fumble over the “r” in roach, and blink at him in polite discomfort.
This gentleman, Hans, we’ll call him, once descended upon me in the lobby and asked if I’d ever read “Die Zauberberg,” which with my bad ears and undergrad German, translated as “The Clean Hill.”

“No,” he snapped, “The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann.”

Now Mann I knew. I love Death in Venice, and even more so, Visconti’s adaptation of same with its garish colors and cackling plague infested minstrels. At that time, however, the only thing I knew about The Magic Mountain was that it was one of those reading rites of passage, 800 lurid pages of mottled lungs and five course meals served with sherry in fine crystal.

Hans, noting the hint of recognition in my face, went on with a sense of mission: “My father was a doctor up in Davos. He tended to many of those patients. I spent my entire boyhood there.”

He continued to tell me how as a boy, he would run about the sanatorium grounds, often disturbing the lavish meals of the patients, many of whom he recognized when reading Mann’s book.

Not reading The Magic Mountain would be a lost opportunity personally equivalent to Castorp’s lost years. Yet, as I do I find myself scouring the pages, and going over the features of every small or slightly youngish character to appear. I can’t help but expect that each time Herr Settembrini and Naphta break out into another religious and philosophical spat that they’ll be cut off by a gaunt, bespectacled boy, who will shake his head and tell them that none of it matters.

Only the cockroaches will survive.

Memo to documentary filmmaker Michael Moore: Free markets didn’t cause the financial crisis. The biggest culprits were government planners meddling with the market. So why does Michael Moore (Capitalism: A Love Story) want to route even more power and money through Washington? Centralized planning is economic poison. Doubling down isn’t the cure.

Sometimes, when you think you’ve done it all, you just get a thirst to go further. Europe does have fantastic winter sports to offer, and is perfect for a quick break, but with the advent of cheaper air fares and faster connections, it’s not altogether improbable to travel further to get more for your money where skiing is concerned.

Mount Fuji

Japan

Over 80% of Japan’s land area is composed of mountains and the winters are governed by the Siberian air mass, the coldest air mass in the world.

As a result at least four months every year the mountains in the central highlands and northern regions of Japan are blanketed with snow, making Japan’s ski grounds among the best in the world.

Japan was the first Asian country to host Winter Olympics in 1972 and then again in 1998.
Yet despite the country’s brilliant winter sports conditions and facilities few Europeans have ever been skiing there.

Hokkaido enjoys Japan’s most consistent snow conditions with deep powder guaranteed every year. The official Hokkaido ski season runs from 23 November to 6 May making it the longest in Japan.

The only time worth avoiding is 28 December to 3 January when lift queues are long and accommodation prices exorbitant due to Japanese winter sports enthusiasts flocking to the resort to experience the area’s famous powder during their New Year’s holidays.

For information about snow resorts in other areas of Japan visit: www.snowjapan.com

USA

The ski resort of Aspen is a playground for the upwardly mobile and seriously rich, but it’s the skiing that really sets it apart. With four separate ski areas and a huge variety of terrains and activities, Aspen is ideal for all skiers of all abilities.

Visit the Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk or Snowmass depending on your ability. If you’re a beginner, head to Buttermilk, which enjoys a reputation as one of the best mountains for novices in the US. Aspen Highlands, too, has good mid-mountain facilities for beginners, reached by a fast quad chair. For intermediates, Snowmass – which has its own village – is probably pretty close to heaven, offering a vast sprawl of linked blue runs.

The only one of the four areas where snowboarding is not permitted, Aspen Mountain (known to locals as Ajax) is the place for the ambitious, with its many double-black gullies, off-piste tree runs, and ‘dump runs’, artificially created 100 years ago by tailings from the silver mines scattered on the slopes. There are lots of mogul slopes, a couple of them sited on the final approach to the resort. Intermediates must not miss the 14-minute ride on the Silver Queen gondola all the way to the peak and to ski a vertical drop of around 3,267ft, including part of the World Cup downhill course.

Get there…

British Airways (0845 773 3377; www.britishairways.com) flies from Gatwick to Denver, 350km east of Aspen, everyday; United Airlines (08458 444 777; www.ual.com) flies more than 12 times a day from Denver to Aspen Sardy Field Airport. Alternatively, Northwest Airlines (0990 561000; www.nwa.com) flies from Gatwick to Minneapolis/St Paul, with a non-stop forward connection to Sardy Field.

And if you really can’t hack the jet lag…

Eurostar offers two highly popular direct services a week direct to the French Alps with each stopping at Moutiers, Aime la Plagne and Bourg St Maurice. Travellers can choose to take either the scenic day service enjoying magnificent views of Burgundy and the Alps or Eurostar’s overnight service. This service departs on a Friday night arriving on the Saturday morning thus ensuring skiers an extra day on the slopes.

Once travellers arrive in the Alps the resorts of Courchevel, Meribel, Tignes, La Plagne and Les Arcs are only bus transfer ride away from the train station. This means there are no time-consuming longer journeys unlike those experienced when arriving at the airport.

Fares are competitive with Standard class returns starting at just £179 whilst Leisure Select passengers can enjoy a full meal service, drinks and roomier accommodation from only £269.

The first day service of the 2006 season departs on the 23rd December and the first direct night service is on the 29th December. Tickets can be purchased at www.eurostar.com or on 08705 186 186.

Tarih 21 Eylül, yer New York…
