I’m playing Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War Dark Crusade no.It’s a pretty good game. It’s kinda recaptures my imagination when I was a child about space battles like stars wars, star trooper, doom and something like that.

In the game, I prefer playing as the Tau Empire.I like the race’s niche area in ranged combat. The fire warriors and the Kroot thingies produce the best combination of force.

The detailed animation and spectacular effects made this game stands out from other similar games. You could see some bloodiest and and breathtaking battles in this game.

My strategy is using the Kroot clan to take on the enemy at close combat and Fire Warriors as the backup, pounding enemy with fatal burst of plasma beam.I always use the Mon;tka strategy because of the Hammerhead gunship superior firepower.

There is also a mega trainer with a lot options. But i recommend you to get the best game experience turn off the unlimited resource option coz the race to control all the strategic points on the map made the game interesting.

For all the RTS gamers out there, I recommend this game if you want a good and long lasting strategy game

p/S: Check the DOWNLOADS section for the mega trainer link and mod tool.

The last in the original Dawn of War series, before Dawn of War 2 and maybe the best of the series.

The last in the original Dawn of War series, before Dawn of War 2 and maybe the best of the series. Now that I have all of the games because of the greatness of the series boxset, I felt it was time to finally review one of them. For those of you that don’t know what the DoW series is, it’s a Real Time Strategy series revolving around a set of conflicts involving progressively more factions and races of differing military uselessness. The entire ’story’ is told from the perspective of the human forces of the Imperial Guard and reads like it was written by a futuristic version of a certain Mr Griffin of Barnet, London. Soulstorm has 9 different factions, the usual hordes of the Imperial Guard, Chaos Space Marines, Eldar, The Necron Tomb, Orks, Space Marines and Tau from the pervious game. As with the previous titles there are new factions for this one, the very originally named Dark Eldar and the Sister’s of Battle. The Dark Eldar are probably the most evil creations in the video game world and the Sister’s of Battle are a completley female combat force that are just as rubbish as the Imperial Guard.

The gameplay is almost the exact same as the older DoW games, but then again why fix something that isn’t broken. The same buildings and research arcs as before mean that playing as the older races is much easier than the new ones because you already know the units and the research so it’s much more intuitive. Each race has a new aerial unit for the first time, and they’re almost identical in ability and only the look of them is different. New abilities have been created for the 2 new races involving the collection of additional resource types and allowing the races to rain down destruction upon their enemies in a new and imagination way.

The difference in the gameplay in Soulstorm compared to it’s older brothers is that the conflict spans over an entire star system instead of individual planet. The amount of battles are almost the same as the Dark Crusade, however there are different victory formats instead of simply kill everything not you shaped – the planets all have Webway Gates, which allows travel to the neighbouring planets and requires a ‘Capture and Hold’ victories. Saying that, the stronghold battles are all the same – you start seeing the mainbase, then at least two forward bases appear which you have to destroy to stop production of the pain in ass vehicle de jour.

To sum up, despite being the same as it’s older titles the relative cheapness of it these days it’s a definite buy. It’s much better than any of the Warhammer 40K games, including it’s replacement: Dawn of War 2.

HORUS RISING By Dan Abnett

Ahh, the infamous history of the Warhammer 40K universe. The oft hinted at time of the uprising against the Emperor, and humanity’s, greatest enemy. Finally, we have the history of the Horus Heresy. The first chapter, told by one of the Black Library’s best loved writers, Dan Abnett.

I recently rediscovered the Warhammer universes, after a fifteen-year absence. Both times I found my way to Gamesworkshop via different methods, and found my interested satiated in different ways. The first time I entered one of their shops I marvelled at the artwork and the intricately painted models. I’ve never been interested in the tabletop gaming, but the figures impressed me, and later frustrated me as I tried to create my own versions of the miniature masterpieces. The second time, only about three years ago, I came across Dawn of War, the epic real-time-strategy PC game, and its various sequels and expansion packs. The game brought all the beauty and brutality of the 40K universe to life, and drew me further in, which is when I discovered the tomes of the Black Library and the written history of the 40K universe. I’ve read a few of the books, mostly the omnibuses, Eisenhorn, Space Wolf Omnibus, and the Malus Darkblade books. Most of which are written by Abnett.

Horus Rising tells the story of Captain Garviel Loken, of the Luna Wolves. His battles across worlds, and the introduction of chaos to the innocent world of the 31st millennium. This world is much different to that of the 40K universe, without the corrupting influence of chaos, the human Imperium is a much safer place, as the Space Marines march unhaltingly across the universe destroying all who stand in their way in the name of the Emperor. The battles are with fellow humans and giant spiders, and green-skins, not crazy chaos-space marines.

The world of the 31st millennium is a much more relaxed place, the people in it far more human and venerable and real, without the dominating influence and fear produced by chaos.

The story of the Horus Heresy is huge, and this first book is just the prologue, hinting at so much more to come. It would be unfair to point out that the heresy has barely begun, despite these three hundred pages, because this really will be an epic tale, encompassing many different sections of the universe.

Horus Rising is a book that sets the standard high, it does well to set a different tone from the 40K universe, whilst maintaining a similar integrity. Abnett is on form, producing a rip-roaring war novel that begins what is likely to be the largest series the Black Library will ever produce.

And this is just the beginning…

So, as part of my “bleeding money out of my face” strategy, I picked up the Relic Super

So, as part of my “bleeding money out of my face” strategy, I picked up the Relic Super Pack (CoH and expansion, DoW and first two expansions) from Steam. I’m single-handedly keeping those fuckers in gold plated cars. They have such delicious sales.

Company of Heroes is, unsurprisingly (and in a welcome way) the bridge between Dawn of War and Dawn of War 2. It’s more of an RTS than DoW 2, but it’s much more tactical and precise, as opposed to DoW’s Starcraft-like “fire everything!” gameplay (Chiwetel Ejiofor reference!). Your squads can level up and become veterans (although maybe your guys in DoW can do this too?), and you can upgrade them with various new weapons, abilities, and items, much like in DoW. Having played both DoW and CoH recently, it’s safe to say that CoH feels a lot better.

Which reminds me. A while back, Tom Chick said that after playing Red Faction: Guerrilla, playing other games with big areas and explosives (Just Cause, GTA IV, etc) felt fake and wrong. This is exactly how I feel about not being able to aim my troops in different directions. It’s so simple, clicking to order a move, and then dragging in the direction you want the unit to face. Maybe it’s been done before, but this is the first time I’ve seen it. It makes even the simplest infantry move seem tactical. And when you’re moving the big, slow-aiming units, it’s extremely important. Once tanks get introduced, the direction they’re facing becomes one of the most important things in a mission. It makes the second-to-second activity of the game feel more important and decisive, and it does it effortlessly. I’m not learning some horribly complicated new way of approaching combat. I’m just realizing that, yes, it’s important which way that guy is facing.

Equally impressive (to me, at least) is the fact that I like the look and feel of the world Relic has created. Comparing DoW and CoH (and even DoW 2), you’d think I’d prefer the Warhammer titles’ look and feel, just because they’re set in a colorful, vibrant universe. Instead, CoH has created a WW 2 landscape so detailed and beautiful (it looks almost as good as DoW 2), it’s as entertaining, if not more so, than its extraterrestrial counterparts. Of course, it helps that DoW took place on nondescript ice/grass/desert/industrial planets, and DoW 2 takes place on highly detailed, beautiful desert and jungle planets. I’m not sure how battle-scared northern France seems more original and beautiful than lush alien jungles, that that is how I feel about it right now.

Of course, I’m still struggling a bit with the RTS part of CoH. I’m not great at managing lots of guys, and even my mission to clear a road of German patrols and troops was tough. I was (as always) turtling along, killing everything slowly, until I hit the last pocket of German troops. My riflemen (who were upgraded with heavy weapons) got completely screwed by the German defenses, and I had to mortar the defenses from a distance, waiting for more paratroopers to drop in. I’ve got the hang of the mortar crew, the MGs (with their wonderful cones of fire), anti-tank guns, and other special weapons, but I have trouble managing my basic rifle units. I’m always babysitting them, since they always either a) sit too far away and don’t fire enough, or b) move up close and get shredded. I think I’m handling them wrong, but we’ll see.

I’m excited to pick up some tanks (soon?), along with some units better dedicated to armor-destruction. really, any vehicles at all would be cool.

As for Dawn of War, it’s sadly been overshadowed by its own sequel and by CoH. It’s like a combination of the two, but both of those games are better at what they do than DoW is. I’m still curious about all of the races it has, but it’s single player is not nearly as interesting as the SP in DoW 2 and CoH. Maybe the multiplayer (which is what I loved when I first played the game years ago) will still have something to it?

[on a side note, it's amazing when modern games don't have widescreen support. I know DoW came out a while ago, but it still annoys me]

All in all, these are really good games. It amazes me, how much Relic is doing with the RTS genre. Blizzard, the “master” of RTSs, is producing Starcraft 2, a game that couldn’t look more uninventive and stunted if it tried. Relic does interesting new things with the genre every time they make a new game. I know Blizzard has to worry about competitive Starcraft players killing them if the game isn’t “just right,” but they’re being left behind by Relic. From Homeworld to Impossible Creatures (a game I loved to death, for many reasons, one of them being the ability to create a unit called the “Wolvery Owl.” Fuck yeah) to DoW 2, these guys have shown that they’re inventive, smart, and willing to take risks. I’m excited for their action-RPG, Space Marine (although the irony of that title when viewed alongside the heroes of so many video games is intense), and for whatever else they have in the works. My vote? Awesome RPG-campaigns for the Orks, Eldar, and Tyranids in DoW2. That would be so sweet.

Relics Dawn of War 2, or DOW2 as most call it is definately a must play for all RTS (Real Time Strat

Relics Dawn of War 2, or DOW2 as most call it is definately a must play for all RTS (Real Time Strategy) lovers. Many RTS’ depend on simply the amount of units a player has, often the player with the most ammassed units would dominate. DOW2 is not only extreamly strategy based, but offers plenty of options and tactics in each and every game you play.

Outside of the single player compaign, DOW2 offers four playable classes where you can battle over the Windows Live network; battles range from head to head, two vs two, or three vs three. Much like Relics previous major RTS, Company of Heroes, DOW2 also has two game modes, annahilation and a victory point control mode. The game also bosts avery generouse four races, or classes, to play depending on your style and taste:

Tyranids – Appearing to be the antagonists of the DOW2, this team is your primitive alien race, much like whats seen in the movie Aliens, they are large in numbers but cheap to produce, what ever weapons and armor they wield, they were physically spawned with, pertruding out of their bodies.

Space Orks – Much like the Tyranids, appearing to be antagonists, the Orks are one more step up in the evolutionary food chain it seems. It looks as though they don’t wear as much armor as the Space Marines or Eldar, however the physical build of their race would explain why.

Space Marines - These guys are your human class of the game, wearing thick armor, clad with helmets, rocket launchers, and chain swords, yes, chainswords. They’re what you would expect a futuristic human army to be.

Eldar - The Eldar are the third of the alien races in DOW2, polar opposites of the Orks and Tyranids, the Eldar are a more advanced alien race. What they lack in size and power they make up in their destructive technology.

Not a chainsaw, but a chain-SWORD!

On top of these four very diverse classes, each race also gives you the choise of selecting your main character, your Hero. Somewhat consistent throughout all four races, you generally have an offensive, defesnive, and support hero to choose from. Your Hero is the most important part of your army, most often he/she/it will be leading your squads to the front lines, buffing them, or in some cases debuffing your opponents. Of course if you have a support hero, it’s important to keep an eye on his health, because if you lose him/her/it, you will need to either pay in resources to have him respawned, or if you have a teammate, they can use their hero to revive your own for no cost.

A significant bonuse to keeping your hero alive is to have him rise in level. All of your units can gain levels, giving them more health and stats, however your hero is definately priority. A higher level hero will not only let you dominate your opponents hero, but most definately roll over the enemy units with much more ease. Not to mention your opponent will be able to harrass you as much as they please if your hero is out of the picture. Apart from your units and hero leveling up you can customize each unit with items and upgrades, for example, adding a commander or luitenant, which will make that given squad more resilient to damage, and possibly one other bonus, i.e. more effective vs. vehicles. There are countless ways to go about itemizing your squads, however you will definatly have limited resources, so it’s imperative to go with the right upgrades for situations that you think you may encounter.

This is some gameplay from the single player compaign, but it lets you see the game mechanics overall.

One last note, a huge part of DOW2 is outlasting your opponent, you don’t want to retreat your squad too early. It’s a lot like a game of chicken, whoever retreats first forfeits that battle/strategic point, but on the other hand, its better to retreat than to lose a squad, especially if they’ve been upgraded, or are of high level. Overall, this is personally one of the best RTS’ that I’ve played. There is plenty of diversity both in the way you can play, as well as the factions to choose from.

It’s been a long time since we didn’t cover the Warhammer 40k universe. We have played Dawn of War : Soulstorm, and it has been pretty fun. Unfortunately, we cannot get Dawn of War II due to our crappy computer, but we’ll hopefully get a new PC some time in August. Anyways, we’ve checked out some reviews, gameplay trailers, some forum opinions, and we’d like to stress how different the two games are, which is pretty surprising (in a good way).

The Dawn of War series has been turned from a traditional RTS game, which involves base building, resource collecting and troop manufacturing to a tactical squad-based RTS game featuring no base-building or resource collecting at all.

Lots of races have been taken out and the Space Marines and Orks are emphasized too much. It almost reminds me of a Warcraft III-Company of Heroes combined game where you have your squad and a squad leader and must move around the map completing objectives, collecting stuff.

Overall, the lacking traditional elements of an RTS that have been ripped out, and the few additional features added makes Dawn of War II inferior to the first of the series, however, when we’ll buy the game we’ll make a more accurate comparison.
